Well, you've read the notes, the notes played The Name Game, and now it is time for you to post until the game cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ALEMBIC!
-
First post after BK!
-
Second post after BK!
(In honor of George who is probably enroute from Seattle)
-
BK, I think that if you could give a gift to the classical music (Sibelius) lovers, like the ones you have given to the musical lovers, you should do it.
-
First post after TCB!

Agreed!
-
I'm home and have been for a little over an hour.

Well, the 5th Avenue's The Secret Garden was wonderful! I love the show. I've seen it twice before...the first time at the 5th Avenue in the first (i think) Broadway national tour.
-
Was this a 5th Avenue production?
-
In the curtain speech, the artistic director of the 5th Avenue Theatre said that this was a new version...and that Lucy Simon herself was in the audience! She stood up and waved. We were in the first row of the upper level (GREAT seats) and we looked over the edge and saw her! Pretty cool!
-
Call me dumb. Who is Lucy Simon?
-
Was this a 5th Avenue production?
It's a co-production with Shakespeare Theatre Company (http://ShakespeareTheatre.org) in Washington D.C. It played there before coming here.
-
Call me dumb. Who is Lucy Simon?
She wrote the score (Marsha Norman wrote the book and lyrics) and is the sister of Carly Simon!
-
It was nominated for (but didn't win) the Tony Award for best score (among others), and they were robbed...in my humble opinion.
-
Good night, George.
-
Good night, Tom.

Looking HERE (https://www.ibdb.com/tour-production/the-secret-garden--513042), it turns out that I saw the first national tour, but at Seattle's Paramount Theatre, not the 5th Avenue. In the tour, we saw Roger Bart, Audra Ann McDonald, and Amanda Naughton as Martha (she was on Rupert Holmes' REMEMBER WENN). I remember finding my program from that tour several years later and those were the names that I recognized.
-
I almost forgot! This was a "new version." Some songs were dropped ("Round-Shouldered Man"), a couple were reworked ("A Fine White Horse" is essentially the same song, but a couple lines changed and renamed "A Brand New Coat"), moved ("Wick" now opens act two), and there is at least one new song ("The Man in the Moon" in place of "Race You to the Top of the Morning"). I think that it was all really well done, especially all the performers. :D
-
And now, I need to get to bed.
Have a good day, all!
-
But before I do...Gratuitous Post # 20!
;)
-
Good morning, all.
-
First on the coast?
First in war? First in peace? First to holler "I quit"?
-
Coffee!
-
Back to the Fish Show today.
-
Good morning to all

I liked all the original songs. Are the new ones any better? Where there any other book changes? Are the ghosts still there?
Saw it on Broadway with most of the original cast.

First after Chas?

No, first after Chas and Michael on the East coast!!!

Good morning, all!

I sleept poorly. I had a huge round of holocaust/POW nightmares, most of which have faded by now, but they are very unsettling.

Thursday morning greetings. Rough night here, because Richard has been sick to his stomach since about 6pm yesterday. I'm trying to get him into a doctor.

DRs TCB and George, Lucy Simon was one of three daughters of the man who founded Simon & Schuster publishing. Her sisters are Carly, the singer-songwriter, and Joanna, an opera singer. I think my late friend Al Simon, who played piano for musical theatre rehearsals in the 20s and 30s, was her uncle. Al wrote one of my favorite books:
-
Today, goddaughter Charlotte and I are seeing Beauty and the Beast. I look forward to spending a couple of hours with her.
-
I talked to Randy. I will book my ticket to Ohio today. I'll fly out aroud May 24 and stay for two weeks, I think.
-
It's a lovely morning. Let's hope it turns into a lovely day and stays that way.
-
Sounds like fun DR ELMORE.
-
I like WILL SUCCESS SPOIL ROCK HUNTER? ....but I am not a Tony Randall fan - Jayne Mansfield is so funny, and Joan Blondell is terrific as well.....
Randall and Betsy Drake are drags.......

Elmore, thanks for the reminder about Joanna Simon. I met her ages ago after a concert. Lovely person. Forgot she was a part of the family.

So, Tam is doing his second Lucy Simon show. (Dr. Zhivago was the first.) how many people can say that?
-
Thank you for the vibes DR TCB.

Good news from Sandy. Is that neuropathy he has in his Hands?
How many times have you cruised Alaska? Is there a short one that does a round trip crises from Seattle?

Just found out on the Book of Face that one of my nieces in Germany got married. Cool news.
Congratulations to the happy couple, Heike and Jorg Hass.
-
That is funny you read it on fb first. Congrats to your niece.
-
It was either Herculanium or Pompeii ... and so happy we chose the lesser known UNESCO World Heritage site. Not as expansive as Pompeii, Herculanium's fate was sealed by the ash and volcanic gases of Vesuvius which left the city more or less intact. And, too, the town was far more prosperpus than Pompeii, and the murals and mosaics still visible are simply extraordinary. Go here to learn more: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herculanium

If anyone wants to share some of our photos here feel free to do it. I did a trial run before leaving home to transfer photos from my phone here but they were all too big.

Thanks DR GINNY....I am sure I will be in fine form and ready for the stage by July or August.....

I don't think anyone else in the family knew either. It's a second marriage for her. She has grandchildren. Its probably not something they wanted to play up. Now the family gathering to celebrate will likely be huge.
-
DR Ginny, good vibes Richard is ok.
Thanks, DR Jane. He's had an anti-nausea shot and we're waiting for notification that his 2 prescriptions are ready for me to pick up. We're wondering if eating Honey Baked Ham causes these flares. He had exactly the same thing the week after Easter last year.

That's about twice as much sleep as I had last night. I foresee a nap...

4th post on Page 3.

I stayed home yesterday. Woke up feeling miserable. After calling in sick, I went back to bed. After a couple of more hours of sleep (around 8:46 a.m.), I woke up feeling better but decided to lay low and stay home anyway.

I've been thinking about retirement for so long that I'm getting homesick for South Carolina.

The ghosts are still there. I don't know about actual book changes, though. I like the original songs too, but I felt that "The Man in the Moon," while not necessarily a better song (and certainly not a bad song by any means), works better for the moment. It's a lovely, quiet lullaby that Archibald sings as a goodbye to Colin when he is leaving for Paris.

I hope that's the cause and something not more serious.

I enjoyed Beauty and the Beast. I thought the screenplay was better than the animated film's but I got tired really quickly of all the CGI. I don't know why Dan Stevens signed on, though. I spent half the film wondering if that were he under all that makeup or someone4 else moving to Stevens' voice track. And the beginning with him in blue eyeshaow, beauty spot, and red lip made me think the film was Beauty and the Drag Queen. And while I'm kicking sacred cows, I think Audra MacDonaldd is not particularly photogenic in 19th century powder and wig.
Kevin Kline twas my favorite in the cast.

Back from a nice breakfast meeting at Du-Par's - had two thirds of a short stack and a side of bacon.
-
Once back home I went back to work on the script and finished revising the way the show opens - it's much better now - I wrote a couple of new lines to help bridge but I didn't cut anything, just completely rethought and rearranged it all into a cohesive number that now will do everything it needs to do to draw the audience in to the leading character and the show.

I can understand that.

I am having trouble.

Tonight we ate dinner at a pretty restaurant we have passed a number of times. At the end of the meal they offered a puff pastry from a basket of little puff pastries. This is something I have never liked, until tonight. It was OMG good. The outsidewas glazed with caramelized caramel.

I don't know if you have eveer heard of this, Jane, but it's a ristorante in Puglia. It's called Grotta Palazzese, I believe.

My condo's elevator is still out of service. I'm getting VERY TIRED of this problem since I have things I want to cart out of my condo to donate or store.
A co-worker advised me this is an OSHA violation. Doesn't seem to faze anyone there, though.

I was never partial to Italian desserts until I first tasted Tiramisu. That seemed to change things a bit.

DR Elmo: Over at the FilmScoreMonthly Messageboard, there has been some talk about the upcoming "The Golden Apple." (http://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=108457&forumID=1&archive=0) It's in a thread started a couple of years ago when the OBC was released. Then it shifts to the upcoming production.
Someone suggested a new thread ought to be started on it.
Why don't you join the messageboard and share your wisdoms!!!
-
DR Ron that photo is spectacular and the restaurant a bit far from us. We had planned to eat at the inside portion of the garden restaurant at our hotel and it was too cold. This looks as if it has the potential you be freezing
-
Today's fresh hell: in early February I was asked to score three Rufus Wainwright songs for a chorus concert. I said yes and gave them my fee. I also told them I coulfn't think about the work until The New Yorkers opened. The conductor responded that "The fee is a little more than I had in mind - we are stretched to the limit paying all these players! I will figure something out though!"
I didn't think that was a definite yes and there was no follow-up about contract or payment. So, I've thought no more about it and I've heard nothing since Feb. 2. Today, I got an email asking how the charts were going! Oy! I tried to get Joshie to take one of them but he is too busy with The Golden Apple and other things.

Most likely at this time of year...IF it's even open this time of year.

You know, the irony is that I wanted to do this job. Why wouldn't the chorus' conductor keep up on what's going on sooner, like two weeks ago?

It's exciting to start with to have a new Sherman Bros musical, but even better knowing this will be a really fine show all around, given your contributions.

And the second dish of fresh hell arrived in today's mail, My Medicare HMO has gone to an asshole company called Palladian Healthcare.
Today I received a"Notice of Denial of Payment" for physical therapy. After giving me the bullshit ("you have selected a Primary Care Practitioner within a special group. Palladan does not administer services for this special group") on why this has been denied, even though my on- and off-again physical therapy has been approved by HIP since 2013, they write "Please notify your provider to send prior authorization requests and/or claims to: HIP, etc.

Thanks to DR JEANNE and DR VIXMOM.
I am studying hard so that I can pass my test.

Back from a fairly okay Fish rehearsal, followed by picking up cat food (not fish) and a few things for my own lovely self.

There sure is plenty of fresh hell going around this jernt!

I just found out I'm playing three, not two, Superstars this weekend. Which is fine. And it's a good thing I'm available to do that extra one, since the person who originally called me for the job never included it in the list. Incredible.
-
Hey vixmom, it's the Saturday matinee if you care to try coming up. I'm sorry, though, for not having any comps.
-
I thought I had something else to say. Perhaps even something brilliant. Now what in the HELL was it?
-
I wonder how those charts are coming along. :D
(I'll show myself out.)
-
Oh -- interesting about BK's getting those 3-3/4 ips tapes transferred. I believe there are one or two in my meager little collection which I took just because they were there (wherever "there" was) for practically nothing. I think they're Szell recordings from the Epic era, and now I want to go in and listen to them just for the hell of it.
-
George, how's the weight loss coming? Still dieting?
I've plateaued on losing for the moment, but still working at it...slowly. :)
-
Good evening.
-
Thank you for the good wishes for Richard, DRs George, Jane, Elmore, JRand, Vixmom, and Jeanne. I was able to attend book group at the emergency substitute venue and I provided the refreshments - pecan pie bars, Marie Callender's peach pie, and vanilla ice cream.
-
Well, it's time for me to leave work and feed my face.
Be back later.
-
Hello, Dolly! has pretty much gotten across-the-board raves from all the critics, save for the Wall Street Journal, who completely trashed it and not only that, but in a sheer moment of extreme chutzpah posted it early so it would be the first one anyone read - then they apologized for doing it. But, they are a voice in the wilderness on this one.

Good news from Sandy. Is that neuropathy he has in his Hands?
How many times have you cruised Alaska? Is there a short one that does a round trip crises from Seattle?
I don't know if it is neuropathy, but I guess it would be very similar.
This is a 7-day, roundtrip from Seattle, but I just didn't think I could do it I have been to Alaska, but never on a cruise.

I'm at home, after buying some yogurts at Fred Meyer. Now, I'm balance my checkbook and listening to Believe...The Songs of the Sherman Brothers (http://castalbums.org/recordings/Believe-The-Songs-of-the-Sherman-Brothers-2003-Studio-Cast/7060/). It's still delightfully delightful! ;D

Here's the cover:

It would be even more delightful had it been mixed by the producer rather than the moron who did it and left HALF the band off.
-
If I remember correctly, when the CD was first being prepared, the proposed original cover was posted on BK's former site (please correct me if I'm wrong). It was never used because the rights for the Disney images hadn't been cleared. I actually printed it out and put it in my CD case with the published booklet.

This image is actually a scan of my printed picture, but I think it looks pretty good:
