Well, you've read the notes, the notes have called you, you've called the notes and now it is time for you to post until the calling cows come home (they called to say they'd be late).

Good morning, all!  Oy!  Christmas is almost here and I'm not at all ready.  My good intentions about putting lists together failed, so today's the day.

I'm having lunch with Bruce Pomahac of The Rodgers & Hammmerstein Organization today, which will be fun, and I've got to hit the post office to send off various sundries.

TOD:
CDs of 2004?  Since I've purchased next to nothing since June, I have no idea what was issued this year!  My Dear Friend BK sent me a copy of Haines His Way early in 2004 because I could not find my copy, and it's become the most played recording in this apartment building.  Others I'm pretty certain came out this year are these:
FINE AND DANDY
RON RAINES: SO IN LOVE WITH BROADWAY
INFINIMENT: JACQUES BREL
THE PRODIGAL SON (Sir Arthur Sullivan)

DR Ann health vibes and support vibes coming your way  at 9:16 AM EST...and being a goof Lutheran Sunday School teacher , I said a little prayer as well.

td , same for your mom, and Jose for your dad.

Thank you all fo the chicken soup recipes, I shall be trying quite a few of them out but I  admit I was feeling so worn out at the end of the day I settled for the old reliable Lipton soup .

My favorite CD was "Over the Next Hill" by Fairport Convention

Hmmmmmmmmmm......I hope the calling birds do not rack up too much in roaming charges.  If you are going to buy your love calling birds, I think they had better be local-calling birds.  Something to think about.  Something to shout about.

Perhaps since movie-making has become so much of a technical art, the director had to do something to justify his HUGE salary, and doing a backstory was something he had heard about, and couldn't wait to do it.  And hiring people to be friends of Miss Jada Pinkett Smith is probably the only way he could get people to talk to her - or people she would ALLOW to talk to her, she is a VERY famous and beautiful actress, you know.  And she and her husband Will are the tippy top of Hollywood elite....to hear them tell it.

Last night on HBO I watched a movie called LOVE ACTUALLY, which may have been discussed here earlier this year.

It was NOT the greatest movie in the world, but I enjoyed it.  Nice London locations, some good people in the cast, and so many stories that it held my interest for 135 minutes.  It will be available on DVD in February, 2005, and I may have to buy it.  Although, it's Christmas theme may be a major part of its appeal to me at this time of the year.  Many stories taking place simultaneously, and all coming to an end on Christmas Eve - with an epilog.  NOT THE GREATEST FILM EVER, but a nice film with some fun music (dropped in AND composed.).

This is already available on DVD, I rented it about a month or so ago.  I agree not a classic but a nice relaxing fun to watch  film.

Hmmmmmmmmmm CD releases in 2004....hmmmmmmmm....I bought a lot of CD's that were previously released.....music by Bobby Darin, Sue Thompson, Patsy Cline, and Doris Day.

My two favorites - right now - would be Bette Midler, "The Rosemary Clooney Songbook" and "Phantom of the Opera" soundtrack.

You had had New Year’s foods !? How nice!
My mother makes them every year but I don’t…as it’s so conplicated and took time to make them.
Are you a fan of Godzilla like Dear BK?  I’ve never seen Godzilla movie but I know many boys (not only little boys but grown up boys like you and BK) love Godzilla in Japan, too.
Now am watching a commercial program for Godzilla movie on TV, at midnight.

I did buy every Amr Diab CD I could get my hands on, however...but I don't know when they were released in the US of A.

What's the status of the WHAT IF DVD's?

Last night on HBO I watched a movie called LOVE ACTUALLY,

I think it was actually released last April.

Do you think they cut out a lot of Rowan Atkinson's scenes?  It seemed to me from the store & airport  scenes that HE was supposed to be one of the "Angels walking among us" and that he should have popped up in a few more places than he did.  The deleted scene section of the DVD  didn't have any more, but they may have been cut from the script before they were even filmed.

Actually there are many restaurants having “chicken sashimi” and “medium roast chicken” on their menu as special dishes in Tokyo, too, although I’ve never never had them…
Hope you enjoy Japanese foods and Sake now and then.

I think for me, I got WICKED and AVENUE Q last year, so I can't include them.

I have been delighted this year to get a number of reissues of cast albums that I never thought would make it to CD: LOOK MA, I'M DANCIN', ANKLES AWAY, ARMS AND THE GIRL, etc. Amazing that these were reissued.

I was very happy with Clay Aiken's MERRY CHRISTMAS WITH LOVE holiday CD. He winds his powerful voice around some holiday songs, and the ones I had never heard before like the title track and "Mary, Did You Know" I really liked.

Good Morning!

As for those calling birds... Hmm...  Do they know they first have to turn on their cell phones?
;)

As for CDs...  Hmm... Now I know I bought a bunch of CDs this year, but like a lot of fellow DRs, I'm not exactly sure which ones were released this year either, so...

Peter Cincotti - "On the Moon"
Bill Charlap Trio - "Somewhere - The Songs of Leonard Bernstein"
The Manhattan Transfer - "Vibrate"
Bounce - OCR
Caroline, or Change - OCR
Assassins - Revival OCR
Barbara Cook - "Barbara Cook's Broadway"
Dave Grusin - "Now Playing"

Plus a bunch of other ones that I know I'm forgetting right now...

Good morning, all! Day dawned cold and sunny up here on the mountain. I have indoor running water, took a hot shower yesterday! And the little feral cat from last summer came around last night to visit! He has been keeping my cabin mouse and vermin free while I've been away. He's not fat, but certainly not thin by any stretch, so these mousies have kept the restaurant open! Gave him a can of salmon - he gobbled it up in about 2 minutes. And he LOVES being indoors by the wood stove, of course.

He's my third feral cat in 4 years. I think they usually move on to the next inhabited place, when the summer folk leave... this one still makes the rounds, apparently. He's very much friendlier than he was last summer, so I think he has found a family of humans to hang with. I'm happy to have him here - what a sweet little guy.

Welcome to the new Hainsies! And good holiday vibes to all!

Oh - CD's this year:

One I particularly enjoyed was very different: Eva Moon - SOMETHING BREWING. An eclectic mix of styles, but all with a clear signature. Sort of witty world fusion. Eva Moon has a smokey sort of voice with an Eastern European flavor. The songs are very contemporary, dealing with topics like junk mail (CASH FROM NIGERIA) and transgender (SWITCHEROO) and fantasies of escape from the daily onslaught (RUN AWAY WITH ME, SWIMMING UPSTREAM). Lots of relationship stuff that I like a lot, obsession, chocolate. So there's PennyO's two cents...

I slept late again - I must stop doing that.  Now I must do many things before the impending arrival of Mr. Kevin Spirtas at two-thirty.

I have many favorite CD releases of the year (and yes, they can include reissues that came out this year) - the 3CD Mutiny on the Bounty that I just got, several Phillipe Sarde soundtracks from Universal France, a Cal Tjader reissue that I've been waiting for since the advent of CD, several Stan Getz Japanese mini-LP CD issues, and, of course, my personal copy of Windy by Miss Astrud Gilberto.

Don't think I had mentioned this previously, but last night the DP and I hied ourselves to the redundantly named Auditorium Theatre to see THE PRODUCERS (Max Tour/Tour "A").  Currently starring Lewis J. Stadlen (who looked remarkably like the Abominable Showman himself, David Merrick, nee Margulies) and Alan Ruck.  Unfortunately, Mr Ruck was either indisposed last night, or has made an early exit from the tour to hit NYC, where he will be essaying the role of Leo Bloom in the NYC Company.

Either way, we saw his understudy, the more than able Harry Bouvy, who was wonderful.  Mr. Bouvy usually plays Carmen Ghia (as most Leo covers do), and his understudy was also more than up to the task.  Unfortunately, he is billed alphabetically, but Lee Roy Reams is the Roger deBris on this tour, and I think the DP and I were the only two people who knew who he was, and from whence he came.  Somewhat embarassingly, we were certainly the only two people to give him entrance applause.

That said, I also must confess that it is the first time seeing this musical extravaganza, and while entertaining, what I feared would happen indeed did happen.  A) I didn't think it lived up to the hype; B) I didn't think it was deserving of all the Tony's (R) it won, most notably that for Best Score.  (Granted, many of those Tony's (R) were for performances I didn't see, but I heard the same score....); and C) And this is something that Peter Filichia has noted repeatedly:  It doesn't make sense now.....  If Franz is supposed to be playing AEH, then he has been subjected to Roger's direction throughout rehearsals, and therefore his disgust with what has been done to his play on opening night rings quite false, because he has been there ALL ALONG!  You NEED LSD, or some other character...or let Roger decide to make his long-(un)awaited stage debut in his own show...but Franz shouldn't be playing Hitler.

The crowd adored it, however, and the show looked great.

Several weeks ago, there was a groundswell on this here site demanding my thoughts on Mr. Samuel Barber's Vanessa once I saw the production now running at the Los Angeles Opera.  (Okay, okay.  It was Dear Reader S. Woody White who made the request.)

I saw Mr. Samuel Barber's Vanessa last night at the Los Angeles Opera, Dear Readers.  To describe it in a word, I shall rely on one of my maternal grandmother's favorite qualitative descriptors:  Feh!

The story is a turgid Gothic potboiler:  Abandoned twenty years ago by her lover Anatol, Vanessa has since lived as a recluse at her estate in some unnamed northern European country, with all the mirrors and portraits of her as a younger woman kept in shrouds.  Living with her is the old Baroness, Vanessa's mother, who has not spoken to Vanessa over the course of these twenty years, and Vanessa's niece Erika, who runs the household.

The opera opens on the evening of Anatol's supposed return to the estate, but it turns out that the gentleman who appears is Anatol, Jr.  That doesn't stop him from impregnating Erika (offstage) on the very night he appears at the estate, and proposing marriage to both Vanessa and Erika after a few weeks.  Erika holds out for true love but when she hears the announcement of Vanessa's engagement to Anatol at a big ball, she rushes into the snow to kill herself and her unborn child.  She is retrieved and survives, though the child is miscarried.  In the last act, the Baroness redirects her silent treatment to Erika, the newlyweds head off to Paris on their sleigh, and Erika orders that the mirrors and portraits be shrouded and announces that now it is her turn to wait.

Think Miss Havisham and Estella a la Russe.

I wish I could tell you that the music makes up for the shortcomings of this libretto.  Alas, I cannot.  Erika does have a lyrical arietta about the winter coming so soon, and there's an interesting love duet (touched here and there by some irony) between Vanessa and Anatol.  But most of the score is loud mood music that doesn't go anywhere (at least, to my ear) and the vocal line throughout the piece is almost all declamatory, though not in any way that might be called melodic or akin to natural speech patterns.

Dame Kiri Te Kanawa was Vanessa.  Dame Kiri remains a very beautful woman and a striking stage presence.  She handled the music well, but oh, how I would have preferred that she chose to make her Los Angeles Opera debut as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier (playing later this season) than as Vanessa.  Miss Lucy Schaufer was excellent as Erika, singing the most intelligible English I have ever heard sung from an opera stage.  Miss Rosalind Elias, who originated the role of Erika some 46 (yes, forty-six) years ago, was the Baroness.  The Baroness does not have much to sing (which is good, given the state of Miss Elias' voice) but plays a commanding--but silent--presence through much of the opera.  Mr. John Matz was a somewhat pinch-voiced  Anatol, and Mr. David Evitts did a spledid job as the Doctor, the only warm hearted and sympathetic character in the entire opera.

Although different settings are called for (Vanessa's drawing room, a ballroom, a conservatory) the production relied on a unit set, dominated by a white circular stairway and glass panels around the perimeter of the stage.

Special note to Dear Reader Elmore 3003:  Yes, Dame Kiri did remember the words, but only with the help of a prompter.  (This is the first time I've seen a prompter used, by the way, at the Los Angeles Opera.  Actually, a small video box was set at the lip of the stage, and it carried the image of a prompter from somewhere backstage.)

I'm amazed!  Having been around her for five days while she recorded her Gershwin album, I can only profess total amazement at that.  She remembered the vocal lines, too?

LOL!

That's like calling Tosca that temperamental woman with the steak knife!

BK, boy, do I agree with you about all the pretentious, self-indulgent crap about figuring out a character's bio back to the days when they were born to what they had for breakfast, etc.

Everything you need to know about the character and his motivation should be within the confines of the script and the film.  Don't need nothing else.

Here are two Michael Mann stories that Pete Postlethwaite told me that happened during THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS.  I don't vouch for their veracity, but they're great stories...

First one concerns the long caravan of people from the fort that are attacked by Indians.  Mann was shooting from a hilltop far off and everyone was standing in the forest ready for action.  You get: "sound, speed, rolling" then they hear Mann yell "Cut!" Mann comes running down from the hilltop into the scene and moves one person over six inches, then runs back toward his hilltop.  Daniel Day Lewis looked over to Pete and said, "We're fucked."

The other incident:  Apparently a stand of towering Carolina pines (or some sort of trees) was ruining the composition of Mann's shot and so he ordered them all topped.  They topped the trees according to his direction, at which point, behind the trimmed trees, base camp with all the trucks and vans and equipment was exposed.  Mann ordered all the trees to have branches and foliage hammered back on to hide the camp.

Just read in the paper that one of my very favourite TV shows of all time is coming out on DVD complete.  FRACTURED FLICKERS!  where Jay Ward of Rocky & Bullwinkle fame took silent movies and put sound to them.  It was hosted by the inimitable Hans Conreid.  My favourite one was Lon Chaney's Hunchback of Notre Dame turned into Dinky Dunstan: Boy Cheerleader.

It's Samuel Barber, Dear Reader Elmore3003.  No one notices, one way or the other.

Well, I sort of feel the same way about VANESSA, but KNOXVILLE: SUMMER OF 1915 and his song "Sure on this Shining Night" are two of the most beautiful pieces I know.

What's hilarious about Mann and actors like these is that they do the backstory - not the writer.  They don't go to the writer and say, what's your take on where this character came from.  The writer wrote the character, not the actor and most certainly not the director (unless he's the writer, of course).  One has the feeling watching Mr. Mann pretentiously go on and on that he basically changed much of the script to suit his own silly ideas.  But, none of it matters - the film on view is awful so none of that "work" worked.

I was running errands, and next thing I know it's time to head to the theatre.  -I need to fix some programming before tonight's show - just in time for Opening! ;) -  and I'm also meeting some DRs for dinner beforehand, so...

I'm rolling my eyes as I read these "backstory" stories.

The first night of rehearsals for GUYS AND DOLLS (I was in the ensemble, but the director had given every male ensemble member a name taken from somewhere in the script. I was "Society Max." The women/Hot Box Girls mostly came up with their own names), the director made us sit and on the stage and come up with backstories for each of our characters. Biggest waste of two hours in the history of musical theater.

Good afternoon all
Quick update on me...I went in for the bloodwork this morning, and took the opportunity to pepper the NP with questions.  I found out the reason she was so concerned when she called me yesterday.  Apparently the cyst is not a simple one, it is what's known as a complex cyst...septated, or split into segements.  These are the kind that can turn out to be cancerous.  Oh joy.  The blood test today might shed some light onto the situation, but it might not.  The appointment I have scheduled on the 27th isn't a surgical one, just a meet and greet with this new doctor...at which point he'll do an ultrasound of his own, and we'll figure out what to do.  Either way, I'm not gonna get out of having more surgery.

Boy this is scaring the s@#t out of me...

We'll never know the totals, of course, but I think the two Tonys that THE PRODUCERS came the closest to losing were for Best Score and Cady Huffman for Supporting Actress. I think in each case, THE FULL MONTY came close to winning in those categories. I would LOVE to have seen Kathleen Freeman win that Tony for MONTY.

LOL...DR WFO....and yes it was right in front of us.

DR CP - I saw THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS....all of us in the audience suffered the same fate as DDL and PP.

Sometimes I create my own backstory....but I agree with MR BK - where was the writer?   I am always aghast that in a project (and I have been on a few) that while NO ONE would tell an actor how to play his part, no one would direct the play for the director, but EVERYBODY from the actor playing the smallest part to the director to the man running the light board thinks it is his responsibility to change and improve the script.

If somebody comes in with changes or suggestions for me as a writer, I always listen and then say.....well.....give me a night and let me see if I can come up with something that will help you or work for you.....don't give me lines....  Do YOUR job and let me do mine.

Okay, the What If DVD question has been decided and they are on their way.  It was totally arbitrary, which was the only way to do it.  It wasn't a question of "who" I'd like to have them, because if I had my druthers I'd send everyone a copy.  So, I threw all the names into our electronic hat and that's how these seven people were chosen (eight, but Jose was getting one anyway).  But, what I would like is the following: After you get them and watch them (and report on them right here at haineshisway.com), then please lend them to any other dear reader who'd like to see it.  I leave the how of that to the dear readers.  What I do ask is that no one make copies of the DVD - obviously everyone will be on the honor system in that regard, but it's important to me that no extra copies be made.  Thanks.  And the recipients are: Dan-in-Toronto, Jane, elmore, MattH, George, Jose, Jrand, and Michael Barnum.  The DVDs are all on their way.  Again, please lend them to any dear readers who'd like to see them.

CDs:

The Percy Faith reissues, which, happily, look like they'll be continuing next year with two (count 'em) more volumes of the singles-only collections.

Brian Wilson Presents Smile.  I like the original version of "Surf's Up" better, but it's great to hear this rarity after so many years.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 Fool on the Hill.  The 2004 reissue preserves the gatefold cover, with the "naughty bits" on the back (you know, the part that Sears put a red sticker over in 1968), and has the best overall mastering of all the re-releases of this classic.

The Carnival.  The group that several fired Brasil '66 members formed post-Sergio recorded one fantastic album for World Pacific, plus a couple of singles for United Artists, all of which are on this new, expanded CD release.  Production and sound by Bones Howe and Bob Alcivar, so think Brasil '66 meets the 5th Dimension.  Groovy stuff.

I'll think of more later, but here's the touching theater story of the day (actually, yesterday):

Our babysitter, who was sitting for us last night, studies voice with former Portlander Shoshana Bean's teacher.  She was at the teacher's house yesterday when Shoshana called to say she was replacing Menzel in Wicked.  The teacher just broke down and lost it and the rest of the lesson was a wash.  Our babysitter is beyond excited and is trying to finagle a way to get back to NYC to see the show.  :)

As for today's Topic of the Day (at least it's not the top 10 favorite CD releases, so we can list as many as we want!)

An Acapella Christmas - The Manhattan Transfer (just received from Japan yesterday!!)
Cheryl Bentyne Sings Waltz for Debby - Cheryl Bentyne (of The Manhattan Transfer...also just received from Japan yesterday!!)
Sketches of Broadway - Janis Siegel (also of The Manhattan Transfer!!)
Bus & Truck - The Demo Recording
Kritzer Time CD
Vibrate - The Manhattan Transfer

As for favorite cast recordings of 2004:
Assassins
Bounce
Caroline, or Change
Fine and Dandy
- World Premiere Recording

These are just the ones I could think of without looking through my CDs at home.  I'll probably add to this list tonight, after I get home...there are more! ;D

I am packed for my trip, except for a couple of items I forgot to pack.  The only problem is where to put them.  It seems I have packed more stuff for three days in L.A. than I did for my week in Maryland and New York.  Fortunately some of the items packed will be left in L.A.  The goal will be to not substitute new items.

For two days we have been trying to call Craig in Romania.  All we got was a sound of a wind tunnel and then the noise a fax machine makes.  He read our emails and called this evening, 1:00 AM his time.  He could hear us fine but it was very difficult to hear him.  I did find out his plane arrives in L.A. on Monday at 12:45PM.  Mine leaves at 2:45.  If I’m very, very lucky I shall get to see him for a few minutes.  If I’m incredibly lucky it will be longer.

I was tempted to stay in L.A. longer and fly home with him but I need to give Bogie his fluids and move my stuff from his room back into ours before he returns.

I didn't buy many cds this year. The ones that I did were not anything special and somewhat disappointing. I did get Peter Cincotti new CD and I hated it. Really disappointed. He is going the way of Michael Feinstein who after getting his notices forgot about his roots that made his first few cds so memorable. The world doesn;t need another one as judging from his first cd I liked him better.

As DRsJane and Ben can attest, the only view from my window is Holy Trinity, the beautiful Catholic church actoss from me.  It's been covered in scaffolding (sandblasting, I think) for the past three months, but I think they're taking it all down to decorate the church for Christmas.  It's usually quite beautiful with greenery and thinhs.

Spent time tonight watching MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL. I saw that it was coming on Comedy Central, but I had the DVD that I don't think I've ever watched all the way through and definitely not on my HDTV.

I was startled by how good this very old cartoon program looked. Almost no dirt on the print, and the colors were rich. Really very impressed with how it looked. Mono sound, of course, but it was still looking better than a show this old has any business looking.

Got really angry today reading the review of the Julie Andrews CINDERELLA in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY.

The reviewer said he could understand why jack Warner didn't give Julie Andrews the film role in MY FAIR LADY after seeing her in this live show: said she rushed her lines and the cameras gave her a lantern jaw. His contention was that Disney experts could soften her facial features and make her cinematically appealing. Just ludicrous!

Huh? Rushed her lines? Poppycock!

Region 4 DVDS. I would get them from the UK!! We have the same system. If it is an Australian issue I would recommend "Readings Books" in Melbourne as being reliable. They do have a WEBSITE. "Readings" is one one of the most successful independ book/CD/DVd retailers in Australia and are surviving well against the likes of Borders and internet sellers like Amazon.

I just don't think about "regions" when I buy Cds as virtually all video and DVD hardware sold here is multizone.

Hope that is helpful BK.  Newbie Alex might have some suggestions.

DRPANNI can YOU see any Hollywood landmarks from your abode?

Well, from my back window I can see the back of Chinoiserie, where everybody who's anybody gets their nails done. (They even have an autographed pic on Mae West on the wall.)
From the back stairs I can see the sign of California Pizza Kitchen. If that ain't a landmark, I don't know what is!

I'm a little angry at my abode right now. I stupidly did not notice when I rented the place that it only has one main closet and a hall closet. There is also an open alcove area in the Master Bedroom with a built-in dresser. I suspect this at one time was a closet. Sooo, I solved the missing closet problem by putting a clothes rack in the alcove. No problem. Well, tonight, dead tired, in anticipation of DD's visit, I was clearing space in the main closet by moving some things that I wear frequently from there to the bedroom clothes rack. Everything was going quite well -- until the fershluganah rack collapsed! Arrrrrghhhh!

Yikes!  I said I would post today and almost forgot.   I got the most wonderful autographed picture in the mail today-- one I shall treasure greatly.

I hope to add to the collection of photos of special people (cough, cough).

Today was better than yesterday.   Last night I needed to think a few things through so went up to one of the parks in the mountains and swung on the swings.  Unfortunately they have moved the swings so you can't see as many of the city lights as you're swinging.  But it still helped to clarify a few things for me.

I figure I've thought out so many things while swinging overlooking the city that I should continue the practice.

DR Ann, according to two ladies whose books I have enjoyed, Dr. Yvonne Kaye and Louise Haye, the color green is very powerful in its healing properties.  Their way of sending vibes is to picture those in health needs bathed in a brilliant green light (which is kind of weird, because no one looks good in green light.)  In any case, I'm sitting here picturing you awash in the color green.  And hey!--Look at that!  You still look good!

Good Evening!

Back from the show...

"Opening night... It's Opening Night!"

The show went well.  There were some technical issues - mainly sound stufff - early on, but things seemed to smooth out as the evening progressed.

Before the show, I was treated to dinner by DRs SWW and DerB.  -Thank you!  Needless to say, the conversation was sparkling and scandalous - I don't think it could be anything but with those two. ;)

Originally, we had planned on heading into Virginia to grab dinner, but after sitting in almost the same spot for about 10 minutes, we ended up doing a U-Turn on Maine Ave., and ended up dining at the Pier 7 Restaurant... Right across the street from the theatre.  -Total distance distance travelled - about 4 blocks.  Total net distance travelled - about 2 feet!

The dinner was good, and our waiter now knows the difference between Zinfandel and White Zinfandel. ;)

The reception afterwards was nice.  People gave speeches - mercifully short ones.  And there was plenty of food to knosh on too.  I just wish the desserts hadn't have been holiday-themed - there were two many decorated sugar cookies, imho.  I was hoping for the brownies and the miniature fruit tarts that are normally put out for consumption.  But, hey, the food - and the wine and beer - were free, so...

I did have my pic taken with Mr. Laurents and Molly Smith, the Artistic Director of Arena Stage.  -I'm sure our Delaware denizens will post the pics once they arrive back home.  -And I hope they don't have to deal with all the traffic they had to deal with on the trip in on the way back.

-And, as has now become a tradition... Thank you for the roses!  I even got two different kinds this time round!!

:)

In other news...

Once I got back home, I realized my mother and father were still not home.  I noticed they weren't here earlier when I got back from running my errands.  I figured they had stepped out just to get out of the house for a bit.  Unfortunately, it turns out they were back at the hospital.

Due to some blood issues, my father was readmitted tonight.  My mom got back from the emergency room/hospital room about an hour after I got back home.  It's not exactly a routine post-surgery complication, but it's also not something totally unexpected.

The doctors just want to keep him overnight for observation, and to keep an eye on his bloodwork.

-My mom has actually been very quiet since she got home.  Tired and quiet.  And that hasn't exactly helped me feel better about the whole situation.  But I'm here, and at least I was able to clean up the kitchen and take care of some of the usual household chores when I got back tonight.

So... If I could have some Vibes for my Mom too, that would be great.  She is a strong woman, but I'm sure any and all support will be greatly appreciated.

...Well, I'm gonna go back and catch up on posts... I think it will be a while before I head to bed.

My dad's condition is not serious right now, the doctors are just be cautious.  Thanks again for the all the Vibes - they are helping.

Thank you, Matthew.

As for Hallelujah, Baby! and the Tony... I dunno.  -I'm not sure what it was up against that year.

I haven't listened to the CD too many times since I knew the arrangements were being revamped for this production.  Additionally, about half the original score has been jettisoned, the remainder of it modified, and the new "big song" never made it to the OCR, "When the Weather's Better".  And Amanda Green has supplied some new and updated lyrics.

*I'll post the article from the Washington Post that appeared earlier this week after I post this post it - it explains it better.

However, from my few listenings, I do have to say the CD sounds a bit flat.  And there's no real sense of excitement or urgency.

For this production we are down to a band of seven: Piano, bass (electric and upright), drums, guitar/banjo, trumpet/flugel, reeds (flute, clarinet, alto sax, oboe), and keyboards (me).  I do miss having more horns in some of the more "horn-ier" numbers - remember, no groaning - but I do think we sound fine.  I'm mainly playing some string lines as well as mallets (glock/bells, vibes and xylophone).

As for it being exciting on stage...  I'll wait for some other DRs to post their opinions.  As I stated earlier, I'm basically just a pit musician for this show, so...

OH, and the book has been drastically revised too for this production, so it would truly be a case of comparing apples and oranges.

DR Matthew.. As promised...

-The following is from and copyright of The Washington Post:

For Laurents, Time to Revise & Shine

By Jane Horwitz
Special to The Washington Post
Tuesday, December 14, 2004; Page C05

"Don't look at the numbers, don't look in the mirror. . . . Never retire and never die," advises Arthur Laurents. "And I love what I do."

The 86-year-old playwright has been in Washington following his own advice, and his passion, staging a drastically revised version of "Hallelujah, Baby!" Now in previews at Arena Stage, the 1967 musical about race in America opens Thursday and runs through Feb. 13, a co-production with the George Street Playhouse of New Brunswick, N.J.

Long before "Baby!" Laurents had joined the top echelon of Broadway scribes, writing the books for "Gypsy" and "West Side Story," "Anyone Can Whistle" and "Do I Hear a Waltz?" His first play, "Home of the Brave," dealt with anti-Semitism in the military, circa 1945. He's written scripts for films such as "Anastasia," "The Turning Point" and "The Way We Were," the latter two based on his novels.

"Hallelujah, Baby!," with music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, follows the life of an ageless African American woman through several decades of the 20th century as she deals with ever-changing, and yet never-changing, racial attitudes.

Lena Horne was slated to play the lead in the original production. "I wrote it for Lena. We were extremely close and I knew her. The character was a very hard-edged, angry, funny, sexual tigress," Laurents says. But Horne dropped out of the show for personal reasons.

"At that point we should have dropped the project," he says, "because she was unique. . . . And then along came Leslie." Leslie Uggams took over the role and won a Tony Award for it, though Laurents says he "lost interest" after the role was changed to suit Uggams's girl-next-door image. The 1967 "Baby!" was not a hit; it ran only 293 performances.

Laurents recalls how hard it was in the turbulent 1960s to find African American actors willing to appear in a white-written show about race. "There was enormous resentment and resistance," he says. This time, he senses that the actors are comfortable with the revised material and with him. "The black people in this company know how I feel, which is about as unprejudiced as a white American can be. That's probably because I'm gay and Jewish. This whole company's incredible," Laurents says.

The Arena production is about 60 percent new. He cut several songs, added new lyrics (by the late Green's daughter, Amanda Green) and restored a song that Styne had cut in a fit of what Laurents calls "Broadway panic." That song, "When the Weather's Better," expresses a longing for kinder, more just times and ends the show "with a question," Laurents says. The final word, punctuated as it appears in his script, is "WHEN?!"

Laurents is now writing a play titled "A Country Made of Ice Cream," about the absence of outrage and activism in a nation filled with moneymakers and materialists. He quotes a line from "Hallelujah, Baby!" about speaking up: " 'You don't want, you don't get.' I really believe in standing up and being counted."
