Title: DIAL C FOR CHRISTMAS
Post by: bk on December 17, 2004, 12:02:48 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've pondered the enigma of the five golden rings and also the enigma variations, and now it is time for you to post until the enigmatic cows come home.  On Donner, on Prancer, on Vixen.

Good morning!

-At least I'm finally feeling sleepy... But before I turn in...

CD Player:
The Manhattan Transfer - "Vibrate"

The Bill Charlap Trio - "Somewhere - The Songs of Leonard Bernstein"

ZANNA DON'T (OCR) - Finally listened to this one - had it about a year.  Fun listen.  Lots o' words!

ANNIE (OCR) - Finally listened to this one too!  -Had it for about ?? years.  -This is part of my "project" to start listening to the CDs in my collection I haven't listened to...

Ian Bostridge - "The Noel Coward Songbook" - Interesting disc.  And Mr. Bostridge's "classical" style suits the material well too.  -And great liner notes with pictures from some of the original productions.

CAROLINE, OR CHANGE (OCR)

Christine Schafer (soprano) and Graham Johnson (pianist) - The Songs of Robert Schumann, Vol. 1 - What a very nice recital of Schumann's later - and considered problematic - songs.  As with most of Mr. Johnson's releases on Hyperion, his liner notes are extremely informative and exhaustive!  -I would love to see this man's library!!  He researches each and every song... So, there were about 500+ in his complete Schubert series... About 300+ in this Schumann series... Plus his discs of Debussy, Durey, Tchaikovsky, Hahn, Duparc, Britten, Warlock, etc., etc., etc.. Boggles the mind!

Seasonally speaking:
George Winston - "December"
-Plus some other discs which I will most likely put on in the next few days.  -I got a nice Christmas sampler from Williams-Sonoma during their post-Christmas clearance - great selection of vocals.

DVDs - I have a bunch on deck - including a Bollywood one.  Just haven't had the time to watch any this week so far... Maybe this weekend...

We  played Apples to Apples yesterday evening and one of the girls who lives here at church with me got reindeer antlers as part of our gift exchange we had the evening before. The person who is normally called the judge in the Apples to Apples was by special decree called Prancer instead of the judge and had to wear the reindeer headband. It was quite hilarious and made Apples to Apples even more fun than usual! :-) All of BK's talk about reindeer in the column made me think about that.

Well, thanks to Jose's suggestion...
CD - Violet  (Thanks, Jose!)

DVD - Bugsy Malone, Hong Kong Region 0 import
...Alright, I have to admit... This is a Christmas present for my sister, which arrived this afternoon, but I had to make sure that it truly did play in Region 1 machines, didn't I???  ;)

VCR - I think it's still the most recent episode of Amazing Race, but I ended up being able to watch it when it was on, so the tape will not need to be viewed at all

I've always been a fan of the Hallelujah Baby! score - especially "My Own Morning," "Being Good" and "When the Weather's Better" - all beautifully sung By Sally Mayes on her Comden and Green CD, "Our Private World."

And Hilary Knight's poster for that show is one of the best.

BK,

I too feel like I won the lottery, being pulled out of the electronic hat. I'm so looking forward to seeing the What If DVD, and will invite myself to my neighbor Salah's for the viewing. He's not only a good friend, but has the biggest screen in the building. And, oh, I know he'll love the show too.

Of JAMAICA, ST. LOUIS WOMAN, and HALLELUJAH BABY - Lena Horne turned down starring roles in the second and third - I think the lead's songs are weakest in JAMAICA.

Does anyone know how the 87-year-old singer is doing these days?

So I popped it into my computer and it played...then I tried to pop in another DVD into my computer and it wouldn't play...it seems that the Bollywood movie (that would not play in my DVD player) somehow changed my region code settings on the computer and now it won't play region 1 movies! And I can't figure out how to fix the darn thing!!!

Re: The apprentice finale (DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED YET).

I was not surprised by the outcome.  But I was not happy with it.

Especially how Trump went into the audience before making his decision.   It was very obvious to me who most of those people were going to support.

I felt like Chris (one of the cast) was right when he said they really nailed jen.

And even with all that, it still seemed like Trump wanted to pick her.  I really don't think he liked kelly (especially considering his speech at the end saying "i don't really know if you can lead").  Wow, what confidence!

Wanted to comment on DR Matthew's question to DR Jose about HALLELUJAH, BABY! winning the Tony:

The 1967-68 Broadway season went down as one of the worst in history. Almost every musical introduced that season flopped and flopped badly. The two most successful musicals - GEORGE M! and HAIR both arrived at the end of the season and after Tony eligibility had expired, so they were lumped in with the shows for the following season. Had either of them been able to compete in 1968, HALLELUJAH BABY would not have won the Tony.

Its competition was THE HAPPY TIME, HOW NOW DOW JONES, and ILLYA DARLING, all flop musicals. THE HAPPY TIME won the direction, choreography, and Actor Tony Awards. DOW JONES won for its supporting actor, and ILLYA won nothing. I personally think THE HAPPY TIME had the better score, but that year, they didn't give a separate score award. The authors of the Best Musical automatically won a Tony. Oddly, in a career of fabulous stage scores, this was composer Jule Styne's only Tony win.

I'm pasting this article from today's VARIETY with some interesting information on upcoming DVD releases from Warners:

"Warner will release a parade of classic films on DVD in time for Easter, including "Easter Parade."
"Easter Parade" and "The Band Wagon," two oft-requested musicals starring Fred Astaire, will make their DVD debut March 15 as two-disc special editions featuring meticulously restored versions of the movie, a new Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack and lots of bonus features.

Astaire's last musical, "Finian's Rainbow," under the unlikely direction of Francis Ford CoppolaFrancis Ford Coppola and co-starring Petula Clark, will be released for the first time on March 15, along with two other films directed by "Band Wagon" helmer Vincente Minnelli, "Bells Are Ringing" and "Brigadoon," the latter in a newly remastered, widescreen edition.

Strike up the 'Band'

Liza Minnelli is among participants in the audio commentary on "Band Wagon," which co-stars Cyd Charisse. Judy Garland co-stars along with Astaire, Ann Miller and Peter Lawford in "Easter Parade," which features 17 Irving Berlin tunes. Bonus features include a new documentary on the making of the movie and a Garland musical number outtake.

The five titles will be available as a "Broadway to Hollywood -- Classic Musicals Collection" gift set ($59.92) and separately at $26.99 for each of the two double-disc DVDs and $19.97 for the other three.

Making its DVD debut March 1 will be the classic screwball comedy "Bringing Up Baby," starring Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn.

"Baby" will be introduced as a two-disc special edition that includes bios on Hepburn and filmmaker George Cukor.

"The Philadelphia Story," also starring Grant and Hepburn with James Stewart, will be re-released on DVD simultaneously with "Baby" in a remastered two-disc special edition.

"Baby" includes audio commentary by Peter BogdanovichPeter Bogdanovich as well as two new docs, a featurefeature-length Cary Grant bio by Robert Trachtenberg and Richard Schickel's bio on filmmaker Howard Hawks.

Each of the previous two DVDs will be priced at $26.99. They also will be available in a gift set for $68.92, which includes the first-time DVD release of several other comedies of the era, "Libeled Lady," "To Be or Not to Be," "Stage Door" and "Dinner at Eight."

In today's Yes, it's politically incorrect and potentially (well, not even potentially) insensitive, but it makes me laugh anyway department:

I had Christmas cards one year with an old 50s ad image of a woman on the front clasping her head and screaming (I'm sure the original tag line was something like "Oh, no, not waxy yellow build-up!").  When you opened the card, it said "NO MORE CHRISTMAS MUSIC!!"  With that in mind, today's breaking news:

I wonder if Filichia's rave will actually sell books.  Here it is, for those who don't like links so early in the morning:

"Books? There's Writer's Block by Bruce Kimmel, whom most of us know (and cherish) for giving us so many cast albums on Bay Cities and Varèse Sarabande. He's written three prior novels, all of them charming, but now he's taken on a mystery that -- huzzah! -- deals with a 1969 musical trying out in New Haven and Boston before braving Broadway. The show is called Bus and Truck, and -- in a slight homage to Me and Juliet -- it tells the struggle of doing eight a week, month after month. The producer, Conrad Ballinger, sounds suspiciously like David Merrick to me, and given director Galen Chapman's initials, he's certainly Gower Champion. Songwriter Stanley Sherman's might suggest Stephen Sondheim (it's a little too early for Stephen Schwartz) but given that the guy is said to have an ever-present Pall Mall cigarette in his mouth, he seems like either Frank Loesser or Bob Merrill to me. The librettist is Arthur Myerson (as opposed to Laurents?), and the stars are ol' pros Mary Masters and Robert O'Brien. (Who knows their identities? I do! I do!) And so it goes, all the way to costume designer Lottie Kunzel (a composite of Lucinda Ballard and Florence Klotz?) But enough of that. What's really important is that Writer's Block is a terrific mystery novel on every level. I sure didn't figure out whodidit, and I defy you to, too."

Heads up for any potential Percy Faith CD orderers:  as with Broadway Bouquet last year, there are unfortunately production errors on both Singles Vol. 1 and I Think I Love You.  Collectables/Oldies is being a bit cagey about this and I don't think you'll get the corrected versions unless you specifically ask for them.  They made the mistake of sending me the uncorrected versions (I have a sneaking suspicion they're going to try to unload these on unsuspecting buyers before moving onto their corrected product), but after a vaguely threatening email from me, they apologized and are sending the corrected versions to me.

Speaking of which, I'm listening to the singles-only bonus tracks on I Think I Love You and I must say the Theme from Emmanuelle is a virtual cancrizans of The Theme from Love Story.  They were both written by Francis Lai, and methinks Mr. Lai was attempting to reproduce some nice royalty change with his follow-up tune.  :)

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I slept until about 12:30... but considering I didn't really fall asleep until around 5:30...  My Mom was also up very late... She started putting some final touches on her Christmas decorations, as well as putting up some new pictures on the wall - she had dug out the hammer and nails...  I believe she's at the hospital right now with my father... I'll head over soon.

-And my cell phone is missing right now - I probably just left it in the car last night.

And I didn't realize until now that the CD has been reissued and has bonus tracks...including another version of "Snowfall!"

On another Filichia note (B-sharp), I'm dreading the new Mordden book to see what further incorrect information he has to say about JUBILLE and my 1986 restoration with Tommy Krasker.  He had everything wrong in his last book THE HAPPIEST CORPSE . .   We'll see.

I have two versions of Claude Thornhill's SNOWFALL! I love 'em!!!

I have never heard a version with words, however!

SNOWFALL
Lyrics by Ruth Thornhill; Music by Claude Thornhill

Snowfall
Softly
Gently drift down

Snowflakes
Whisper
'Neath my window

Covering trees
Misty lights
Velvet breeze
'Round my doorstep

Gently
Softly
Silent
Snowfall

Covering trees
Misty lights
Velvet breezes
'Neath my window

Gently
And softly
Silent
Snowfall

Drift down
Drift down
Drift down
Snowfall

DR Jose,
Keep in mind that the Bollywood movie you have is a 4 hanky movie...it is gonna make you cry! So unless a good cry is what you need then you may want to wait to view it!

(Although the scenes with the lead actor in his underwear will likely make you smile :o )

CAUTION! Vent coming...

Are people nastier this time of year or is it me? I'm driving along my nice little street in the City of Studio, looking for a parking spot (MY spot in front of the house was gone)...So I get to the STOP sign and neglect to look for Pedestrians - I admit it - I start through slowly and stop immediately - not a screech of brakes stop, I just stop - because I see a woman about to step off the curb. Okay? Got the picture? No drama, no one in danger. But this woman starts yelling at me, "You STUPID IDIOT! What were you going to do? Run me down?!" (An exact quote.)
So I roll down my window and say, "Hey, I'm sorry. But I really wouldn't have run you down. I saw you." But she keeps yelling like some insane banshee. So I just say, "And merry Christmas to you too.." and drive on. But she's ruined the little bit of good mood that I was clinging to.
...Underpants. Dirty ones. Around her head.

In my CD player at work:  The Manhattan Transfer's "An Acapella Christmas" (from Japan!).  After that will be "A Broadway Christmas" then "A Hollywood Christmas," both recorded by our very own BK!!

In my DVD player:  the released for the first time ever "Cinderella" with Julie Andrews.  After that...nothing until "What If?"

In my VCR:  nothing.  I watched The Apprentice last night.  I agree with Jennifer when she wrote:
I was not surprised by the outcome.  But I was not happy with it.

Especially how Trump went into the audience before making his decision.   It was very obvious to me who most of those people were going to support.
I, too, was disappointed with the choice of Kelly.  But what can you do?

I was surprised that they announced last night that the entire third season has been filmed...all they have to actually do is make the final choice.  It doesn't start until January.  Just a little more than a month away!

Thirteen users, five GUESTS, three posts.  What is wrong with this photograph?

Welcome, five GUESTS.  We're talkin' about CDs and DVDs.

Got home from my party last night to find that the gas furnance, the four year old, $4000 gas  furnance wasn't working

 at 10 oclock
at night
in December
in New York

I won't give you all the torid details but I had severla unhappy phone calls with people  who tried to extort huge sums of $$ from me which ended with the phone connection being suddenly cut (by me)

I finally, out of desperation, grabbed the local rag,  The South Bay and there in the center of the advertisements was "24 Furnace Repair call AL"

so I did.

Al graciously gcame first thing this morning and fixed my furnance for the very reasonable sum of $135

But I lost the whole of the morning at work and am now missing the company Christmas party so I bid you all adieu!!

der Brucer

On the show - let's just say it's not ready for New York.
I'm gonna be feisty and persnickety and tell the world: Der B did not take these pictures!  In fact, he left the camera in the car, and I had to run back and get it during intermission.  The photos were taken by MOI!  (A Muppets reference, for no reason at all.)

If Mr. Laurents hadn't been in a bit of a rush to leave, Jose was going to take a pic of Mr. Laurents and myself, as well.  We'd already agreed on how it should be taken: Mr. Laurents would be framed quite well in the shot, and my head would be cut off somewhere around the neck.  I really do tower over the man.

Good afternoon all

Well, I will say this about my life...it never gets boring.  I headed out to my car this morning to go to work, and I noticed that the locks were up...I found this odd, since I NEVER leave my car open.  Moving closer I could see that the interior was in shambles...the glove compartment open and everything taken out, things tossed about, they'd emptied my trash holder all over...it was a mess.  Thinking "Well, at least they jimmied the lock instead of breaking the window.." I began to clean stuff up.  I began to realize that nothing really seemed to be missing...just strewn about.  They had left all my chorale music, thank god, my cd's...even my discman that was in the car...still there.  What did they take, you might ask?  Well I'll tell you.  First, they took my new CSI board game that my friend had given me for Christmas.  We'd exchanged presents in the car and I'd neglected to take it in with me.  Second, they took the two bottles of liquor I'd had in there left over from a party.  Annoying things to lose, but nothing that breaks my heart.  But then I remembered one other item not yet accounted for.  My laundry.  Yes, my laundry.  I'd placed it in the car with the intention of using the machines at work yesterday...however my boss was out of laundry soap, so I hadn't been able to do it.  Not wanting to leave things lying around someone else's house, I'd decided to put the basket back in the car, buy some soap on the way to work today, and do it this afternoon.  But alas, that is not to be.  For all my clothes are now gone...and it was a fair amount, including both of my pairs of jeans, my two favorite workout pants, and a beautiful white sweater that I've only had a few weeks.  This does not please me...no it does not please me at all.  But more than anything, it just baffles me...why would anyone take my dirty laundry???

Re Hallelujah Baby:

Der B said it best last night on the way home: "If I were a critic, my lead paragraph would read A train wreck occured last night.  Fortunately, since none of the cars were connected, no one was seriously hurt."

I'm not familiar with the original Hallelujah Baby, but this revisal simply does not work.  It is disjointed, not only not connecting with the audience but with itself as well.  And the blame for this is mostly Mr. Laurents'.  He speeds from moment to moment, with little time givin to explain how we get from point A to point B, which is on another track entirely.  Cardboard characters popped in and out, which is great when portraying a cardboard villian, but not so great when they're supposed to be supporting heros.  Situations just "happened," instead of being led into.

Worse, the heroine, Georgina, is as cardboard as the rest.  She decides that, to raise her position in life, she's going to become an entertainment star.  Hasn't that cliche gone past hoary?  Not to mention elitist, as comparatively few people work in the entertainment industry in any capacity.  It would have been far more interesting if she had become a businesswoman, working her way up to independency first by working for others, then by striking out on her own.  But I guess that would have eliminated the easy show-biz parodies, none of which landed last night.

The songs were mostly great.  The diction used to sing them was less so.

The set was a central playing area with tacky projections on a scrim behind, with part of the band visable through the scrim at various times for no reason whatsoever.  (Jose was tucked off to the side where we couldn't see him; the musical director was centrally placed at a piano, flashing a big smile every time he could shuck and jive.)  The cast of nine was swamped by the overly-wide stage, with no place to hide.  The lighting was spotty, the sound gave out at inopportune moments...

There were enough good moments sprinkled through the evening that I enjoyed myself, so the time was not entirely wasted.  Ann Duquesnay, as Momma, knocked the house flat with her rendition of "I Don't Know Where She Got It," and Curtiss l' Cook was good as the major love interest.  But Suzanne Douglas lacked the attraction necessary to be the star of the show.

After having such a pleasant experience with MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL last night, I plopped IT'S THE GREAT PUMPKIN, CHARLIE BROWN in the DVD player this afternoon. I know, I'm about two months late, but I was in the midst of the SOMETHING'S AFOOT run and the beginning of NUNCRACKERS rehearsals when the time was ripe to watch it in season.

Anyway, I was absolutely stunned by the color in this DVD transfer. This MUST be the most colorful Peanuts special ever - just luscious, rich fall colors that pop off the screen. When it was over, I wanted to sit and watch it again just to see those stunning hues, but I had other things to do so I resisted. In my catching-up mode, I guess I'll put on A CHARLIE BROWN THANSKGIVING tomorrow since I missed it, too, last month.

If I had to pick a single word to apply to our DR Jose, it would be "joyful."  He is filled with joy, and raises the spirits of those he is with.

We had planned on dinner somewhere hear Pentagon City, but traffic was so jammed up that we instead dined at a seafood restaurant a jaywalk away from the theater.  This didn't phase him one iota.  The conversation sparkled.  Even with so much happening in his life right now that would bring others of us down, he was bright and pure pleasure to spend time with.

Continued vibes, Jose, for you and yours:

Good Afternoon!

Almost time for me to get ready to head in for the show...

-I just heard some clips on the radio from the new Three Dog Night "Symphonic" album - with the London Symphony Orchestra.  Sounds pretty good.  Hmmm...

-I ended up staying in this afternoon.  Just very drained and tired, and my sinuses have been constantly running all afternoon. Ugh!  The nap I took did help, but...

-I have yet to hear back from my Mom - I'll call over in a bit, and/or try to stop in on the way to the theatre.

Well, that's it for now... Back after the show.

Laters...

Evening all.

DR Ann, I hope you felt my vibes today.  You crossed my mind more than once and I was hoping everything was going well for you.

I’m sorry you had your car broken into.  Look at this way.  You must have fantastic fashion sense.  Someone wanted your clothes, dirty or not!

I know I’m to late to say anything to DR Jane but I also hope you have a smooth trip and will be back home safe and sound soon.

Good heath vibes to both the patience and the care givers (Jose’s dad and Mom).  People don’t realize that sometimes when someone gets sick/hurt, it can be just as wearing (sometimes more) to those who are taking care of them or even just worried about them.

I’m sorry, BK, I would post on the other board as well but when I do, I get jumped on.  I don’t want to fight anymore.   HHW has spoiled me.

Panni, I had almost the same thing happen to me the same day I saw the accident.  I was moving very slow through a parking lot and an old guy hollered at me that there were people trying to walk to into the store.

I had him spotted and had not planned on hitting him.  At least not until he said that.  Oh my, I’m being a humbug.

TD, I’m so happy for your Dad as well.    :D  Isn't the Holiday Season magic?

DRElmore, I just received a $25.00 gift certificate from a friend for B&N.  I only wish I could spend it in your store.

Danise, don't post on the other board - there is clearly no need.  I saw the one response when you posted in the NY signing thread.  That is what they are over there - I'm sure there are some swell folks, but there are also some truly nasty people there and who needs that.  As I said, not one order emanated from there and I don't expect there will be any (unless they get it through amazon).

So how set is everyone with the Christmas gifts?  I have one on lay-a-way for my Mom but other then that, I'm done.   :)  It's one of those walkers that has a seat with a back to it.

Since she can only walk so far before she needs to sit down, I thought she might like to have a seat when ever or where ever she needs it.

With the cold weather, I am thinking about making a big pot of homemade soup this weekend but I can't decide what kind.  I'm leaning towards veggie/beef but I have always wanted to make (but never have) French Onion.

What is your secret ingredient for your veggie soup?  I always put some parsnip in mine.

That is wonderful news about your father, td!

I did the performance last night using my cane.  I guess it works okay to have Scrooge using a cane, at home in his bedroom, as well as out on the street.....Come to think of it, I think I raised Cain in the bedroom a while back, myself.

Old, quite old.  I could barely get out of bed today.  The performance last night just about wiped me out.  But, there are only three performances left, so I think I can make it.

Thanks for asking, Danise.

The figures I've been giving for amazon have all been for the softcover, which is to be expected.  The hardcover was sitting at its usual number, around 774,000 (not horrid considering amazon lists over 2,000,000 hardcovers).  However, they just updated the sales rank figure for the hardcover - if we thought the softcover leap was amazing, how about this:

Amazon.com Sales Rank in Books: #88,535

Cotton underpants - Benjamin Kritzer is happy!

As if going from over 500,000 to 133,000 in the amazon sales rank wasn't good enough, we've now, in just three hours done this:

Amazon.com Sales Rank in Books: #62,362

Thank you, Peter Filichia!  And Jennifer posted on All That Chat and within a half-hour seven people bought from the Writer's Block website.

Great!

DVDs:  Thankfully, the WGA seems to be on the for "award consideration" DVD list for some things this year.  In the last three days, I've gotten 3 DVDs of current releases...Before Sunset, In Good Company, and We Don't Live Here Anymore...all independent releases.  We watch In Good Company last night starring Dennis Quaid, Topher Grace, and Scarlett Johanson and it was delightful.  Hopefully, we get a batch more of these before award season is over...Of course, they all come with ownership warnings and claims of being watermarked and traceable to avoid pirated.  I don't care.  I ain't planning on loaning them out.  I just like my perks.  I doubt we'll be getting any big studio releases, but I like to get the smaller films anyway.

 That's All

I can only give you love that lasts forever,
And a promise to be near each time you call.
And the only heart I own
For you and you alone
That's all,
That's all...

I can only give you country walks in springtime
And a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall;
And a love whose burning light
Will warm the winter's night
That's all,
That's all.

There are those I am sure who have told you,
They would give you the world for a toy.
All I have are these arms to enfold you,
And a love even time can't destroy.

If you're wondering what I'm asking in return, dear,
You'll be glad to know that my demands are small.
Say it's me that you'll adore,
For now and evermore
That's all,
That's all.

Once upon a time there was a tavern
where we used to raise a glass or two
Remember how we'd laugh away the hours
and dream of all the great things we would do?

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd laugh and dance forever and a day,
We'd live the life we choose
We'd fight and never lose,
'cos we were young
and sure to have our way.

I like Sally very much, but she's very opinionated and not always tactful (never with me - but I sure have seen it with others).  Happily, her albums speak for themselves and that's all that's important at the end of the day.

Our merry searchers were here a few days ago - I do hope what they found was right up their ALLEY and I hope it was WORTH it.  And today someone was searching themselves and if they're reading these here posts now, come on in and register and say hey.  I really like this person and haven't spoken to them in years.

There must have been a Christmas party at the local NBC station tonight. During the LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT rerun tonight, the technician would remember to switch to high definition for one segment, then forget to switch over for the next, then switch back to HD for the next segment, and so on. It was a seesaw evening all night with that show. Switching aspect ratios back and forth constantly must have driven my poor TV crazy. Certainly made me dizzy.

I was about to post about the movie goodies arriving at the home environment but FS Pogue beat me to it. I'm especially jazzed about WE DON'T LIVE HERE ANYMORE, which I'd been planning to see. I think I'll wait for DD's arrival to break open the flicks. She's a big movie fan and will get a kick out of seeing them.
She's made it back safely from Hungary and is now in San Francisco for a couple of days. On Sunday she arrives in LA. Sunday night we're going to a screening of GARDEN STATE, a movie she loves. But what has her very excited is that after the movie there will be a Q&A with Zach Braff the writer/star/director of the movie, on whom she has a crush.

Good Evening!

Back from the show, and it was a good show tonight too - no second night slump.  Everyone's adrenaline was in check, and that helped a lot.  I also went in a bit early to fix some more of my keyboard programming - I realized that I had mixed up one of the velocity control parameters.  It was an easy fix, it just took a bit of time to go through every setup change and make the adjustment over and over and over.  But all done, and I had a better show tonight, imho.  And since I was in early, I was also able to help the sound board operator figure out one of the problems we've been having with the pit monitors.  All in all, I was glad I got in early.

*I would have gotten in earlier, but the typical DC rush hour traffic - both inbound and outbound - was.. ugh!  Ah, well...

Unfortunately, I was not able to make it over to the hospital to visit my father.  However, he's doing much better.  It turns out they gave him a blood transfusion last night which helped a lot, but he'll be in for at least two more days for observation.  If my sinuses and throat are behaving in the morning, then I'll head over before the matinee.  -Wow, it's the weekend already!

Hi, gang.

Leaving early tomorrow morning for the airport for a quick appearance in LA - my dad's 96th birthday. It's my birthday, too, but that hasn't cut any ice for years and years! Oy, wouldn't you guess the heat from all those candles would be just a tad intense??? Then crack of dawn on Sunday, I fly BACK to Seattle, to drive down on Monday. OY.

Oh, well... having a swell time up here at the cabin and wish I could stay a couple of weeks. I was hoping to try out my new gravity/rainwater system... but no rain! It has been just lovely. I hollered at my daffodils, who seem to think a few cold nights a month ago were "winter" - they are poking their little heads up... "get back to bed, little guys!!" And I covered them up with leaves. Should i put slug bait down? What will I find when I come back in May??? Oh, how I love this place.

Well, just thought I'd check in with y'all. Have a nice night.

So, in the last few hours we'd slipped to just over six figures again in the amazon sales rank, just over 100,000.  Still very good.  In the last half-hour, however, we have achieved our best ranking yet, and I am horn-swoggled.  See it while you can:

Amazon.com Sales Rank in Books: #44,728

Thank you DR Francois. At least someone is reading my posts.

Has anyone heard from DRMS lately?  ;)

Sure is quiet around here without DR Know-ELL

Lots of Amazon people shopping shopping shopping.

Any action on the WB site?

No more action on the WB site, which is fine, because I'm about to run out of books and won't be able to get any until just after the first of the year.  Amazingly, I have gone through ninety of the hundred I got.

This whole Writer's Block thing makes me want to put aside what I'm working on and write another mystery.

Do I remember correctly - didn't Jose send me yummilicious chocolate chip cookies last year at this time?  And, if so, just where in tarnation is THIS year's batch?

Well... If I can work out the logistics, I shall be baking large batches of my Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Toffee Cookies, and some the Best Peanut Butter Cookies you've ever had!... On Monday...

Well, I want to get to bed at a semi-decent hour tonight...  I have two shows tomorrow, and I really do want to make it over to the hospital in the morning to visit my father.

*Listening to "Sondheim at the Movies" right now...  Can you believe I've never listened to this disc before tonight either?!?!?!  Whaddup widdat??!?!

Goodnight.

The dough is now ready. (At least 2 hours in the fridge, according to DR Jane.) I have to decide whether to bake the cookies tonight or in the morning. I'll probably do it in the very early morning. (6-ish). That way the place will smell of cookies all day. A nice smell.

In my frenzy of domesticity, I decided to take the grill off the bottom of the fridge and clean it. What I found behind there would be about 5 years worth of dust clinging to some kind of air exchange or whatever the term is for what is down there. It's amazing that the fridge was still working efficiently. I've cleaned it the best I can, but may I say YUCK.

No posts in an hour! Skammen!
Well, my inner Betty Furness couldn't wait and I'm baking the cookies. We'll see how my vintage tempermental oven does with them. They're in the shape of dreidels, the ever popular Star of David, Menorahs, of course, and a few Maccabees who look suspiciously like gingerbread men with yarmulkes. I checked on them just now and one has lost a leg, another his head. War is hell.

Sad to be all alone in the world.  Where are the late-night denizens?
Title: Re:DIAL C FOR CHRISTMAS

And to prove that I too can be a Domestic Goddess, here are my Hanukah cookies. You'll notice a couple of the Maccabees (Herschel and Sean) were injured by the flames. My pesky vintage oven is too vintage for its own good and gets a tad hotter in certain areas than others. So while the cookies in the front are pale and raw, the guys in the back are yellling for the fire department.

Late night denizens? I'll give you stinkin' late night denizens. Not only denizening -- but baking. Sometimes I astonish even myself.
