I approve of vixmom's preferred soups.

And while I agree that Campbell's tomato soup with a grilled cheese sandwich is one of life's comforting pleasures, I have to say I am newly enamored of Progresso's tomato and basil soup.  No blending, just heat and serve.  Main thing, though:  it's delicious.

For a quick every day soup Campbell's tomato soup  (especially with a nice grilled cheese sandwich on the side)

I used to enjoy this very much though, by far, my favorite was Campvell's cream of mushroom.  Both were always made with milk.  I don't keep either in the house anymore.

TOD:
matzo ball soup from Jerry's Deli
clam chowder (either red or white)
potato and leek soup
mushroom soup
chicken with rice
I don't like a plain tomato soup (like Campbell's makes), but if it's a vegetable soup with a tomato base, that can be very good.
Mark's favorite is Mexican abondigas soup - you know, with the little meatballs
I used to get a lot of canned Progresso low sodium soup, but then they started adding beans to everything (I guess because they're cheap). I hate beans. They added beans to their wedding soup, their chicken and dumplings soup, and I think a couple others. The only ones now that don't have beans are the chicken noodle and the chicken with wild rice. It's very annoying.

Soups:

Several soups I've had during my travels haunt me.

One was in Guatemala. It was a vegetable soup with just-picked vegetables that tasted as fresher than any cooked dish I've ever had.

The other was a Portuguese lobster and bread soup that had about 1.5 pounds of meat in a strong seafood stock and plenty of stale bread that soaked up the stock. I've never tasted anything like it.  Each spoonful was pure bliss.

A few of the rest:
Portuguese Garlic and Bread Soup
Italian wedding soup
Borscht
Leek and potato soup
French onion soup
Bouillabaisse
Tomato-basil soup
Vietnamese pho
Tom kha gai

Albondigas Soup would have to be one of my all time favorites.  I got to know it late in my L.A. life, and the best I had there (and I've yet to find its equal) was a homemade one for which I never got the recipe.  In that same vein, Italian Wedding Soup, and I don't have a current favorite of that, either.  I guess I should learn how to make my own soups.

Having plumbing problems again. Yesterday I was cleaning out the refrigerator when the sink clogged. This is a common occurrence. I can sometimes unclog it myself, but this time it'll require a plumber. The management here is cheap, cheap, cheap. They insist on using a plumber who moonlights for them, but it's a real nuisance for all of us because we are forced to conform to HIS schedule. Once I had a dysfunctional sink for FOUR DAYS. The manager said she was glad the plumber could get to it quickly!!! There is NO consideration for our time or convenience. Last night she tried to blame it on me, giving me a list of things you shouldn't put down the disposal. I barely cook! It doesn't get a lot of use.

I would have moved long before now, but prices are really high and this place is cheap. This is the price I pay for an inexpensive LA apartment. But it would actually be cheaper for them if they hired a better plumber and got the work done correctly the first time. El Cheapo plumber doesn't replace things when he should, resulting in two service calls rather than one. Ugh!

I stopped watching A PLACE TO CALL HOME midway through season 4. I just couldn't handle all the backstabbing. I tried watching it again last week and still couldn't. First we had a horrible election season last year and since then all manner of other stuff. My ability to cope with this has been exceeded. I hope to return to A PLACE TO CALL HOME sometime in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime I am still reading and watching lighter material.

Our elevator has been screwed up for over two months.  To get to the third floor from the ground or basement levels, you need to press 4.  If you press 3, it either opens between floors or stops on 2.  If you call it down to 3, it sometimes goes all the way to the basement before it comes to 3 or, if you call it up from the basement or first floor, it goes up to to 5 and then comes down to 3.

Yesterday it died.

This morning, the service men arrived.  At 9:30 it was running and I took garbage to the basement.  When I left for City Center, the service men were gone and it's no longer working.  I just dragged myself, my bag, my cane, and a heavy bag of groceries up three flights of stairs that slope inward toward the stairwell.  I've sent the landlord two emails today and yesterday, and I made a call to our building management several weeks ago.  If I fall down those stairs and survive, I will own this building.

I drove over to the nearby Subway. I'd never been in one before. I had a Veggie Delite sandwich on wholegrain flatbread. It wasn't bad. I'm looking for new eateries, as so many of my favorites have either closed or gone downhill. I'm ALWAYS looking for new eateries. Lots of them around, but few I'd eager to return to.

It really frosts me that landlords are able to get away with this sort of stuff. I don't know what the answer is, but it clearly isn't right.

Most of the tenants in my building are from third-world countries. Perhaps to them the plumbing issues just seem normal. I suspect that they're more willing to go along with the manager's inconsideration than I am. If they're illegals they certainly wouldn't want to draw attention to themselves.

See, vixmom?  See??

I had my first Bob Evans breakfast yesterday

That boggles the mind, but congratulations!

We dont  have  Bob Evans on LI

Oh, I know that -- we don't either.  But they're in all the other states both of us frequent.

So now you know!  Bob Evans today, Crackel Barrel tomorrow, etc.

And don't forget to try Original Pancake House when you find one.  They've been branching out, slowly...

We used to eat at the Original Pancake House in Michigan and then at the original Original Pancake House in Portland.  Keith won't go near one now because they are simply too good.  The website highlights their two specialty pancakes.  Our favorite is the Apple Pancake.

So, our family room was originally an enclosed porch that two owners ago was made into a year-round space.  Richard and I were sitting in there and I switched on the lamp next to my chair.  The bulb burned out and all the power in that room went out.  Richard tried the circuit breaker in the basement that's marked "back room" and - nada.  He and Rob investigated further to find that the portion of the basement nearest that room above is also out, including the washer (not the dryer, because it's on a 220 outlet).  So, any TV watching will have to take place in my Momcave and, if we want to watch a DVD it'll have to be on my laptop or Richard's.  And tomorrow, we have to find an electrician.  The one that did all the work here 3 years ago has retired.

Listening to Shostakovich string quartets now - I keep trying to enjoy string quartets, no matter who the composer - it's tough going for me for whatever reasons - I can admire them, I suppose, but they don't get to me, at least not yet.  But I'll give all of the Shostakovich quartets a chance, just as I did for the Villa Lobos quartets.

First we had a horrible election season last year and since then all manner of other stuff. My ability to cope with this has been exceeded. I hope to return to A PLACE TO CALL HOME sometime in the not-too-distant future. In the meantime I am still reading and watching lighter material.

I also found a couple of cookbooks, including Francois Payard's dessert tome. All I want to do is make Warm Lemon Tart with Lemon-Basil Sorbet and Bail Oil or Almond-Prune Napoleon with Prune-Armagnac Ice Cream. Lemon-Poppy Seed Cake filled with red wine-poached cherries and clotted cream may be the first.
