Well, you've read the notes, the notes were finished and moved into the theatre, and now it is time for you to post until the theatre cows come home.

And the word of the day is: NOTABILIA!

The Rake's Progress runs about 150 minutes or so and was originally on three LPs. Mint copies of that original LP set go for hundreds of dollars.

Well, good night, Tom. I need to go to sleep now. I agreed to pick up a coworker from the airport and then we'll both go to work. Her flight comes in at 9:00 am, so I'll have to leave by 7:30...7:45 at the absolute latest.
Have a good day, all!

Good night, George.

The Rake's Progress......is that the prequel to The Hoe's Road Block?

Lovely photos in the notes. And so happy the FIX worked....I had no doubt that it would.

I shall have to think about the TOD, but I can name a couple:

BK, The Rake's Progress is one of my all-time favorite operas. I saw Jonathan Miller's mediocre production at the Met in the early 1990s when my neighbor replaced Dawn Upshaw as Anne Trulove. I first heard it around 1965 when the 2nd Stravinsky recording was released on LP, and that cast is still my favorite. Judith Raskin is perfect as Anne, and John Reardon is still my favorite Nick Shadow.
The score, which is sorta like hearing Mozart, Gluck, Bellini through a funhouse mirror, is simply glorious. I think the second scene in Mother Goose's brothel has the best music, but Anne's Act One closer is a real showstopper, and Baba the Turk;s "The milkmaid haunts me" always makes me laugh.

Enough kulcha for today. I have to get moving.

A fine TOD. Loving these posts, and how great to hear BK's first reactions to The Rake's Progress.
I discovered it in school and am probably single-handedly responsible for wearing out the library's copy of the first LP set. And I have to agree with DR Elmore's assessment of the brothel scene. That was instantly my favorite, musically, and isn't Jennie Tourel the one on the recording? I shouldn't have to ask that.
By the time I started buying the Stravinsky LPs, you already couldn't find the first recording except in libraries and secondhand, and I didn't know from secondhand in those days. (My bad.) However, many years later I acquired a copy at a library sale or maybe a used record store for a song, and it's the very first issue, box-wise -- one of those 78rpm-sized boxes that the early Metropolitan Opera recordings and some others were issued in. But But BUT -- its first owner had gotten a very nice inscription by none other than baritone Mack Harrell who means a lot to me (I also knew his son the cellist in those years), so this is really a treasure.
I also remember using the library's piano/vocal score a lot, but I guess I never acquired one of my own. But I now have another treasure, thanks to our DR Elmore -- a beautiful little hardbound full score from the former library of Mr. John McGlinn. Thank you again for that, DR Elmore.
-
A fine description by DR Elmore, one that bears repeating:
"The score, which is sorta like hearing Mozart, Gluck, Bellini through a funhouse mirror, is simply glorious."
-
(No, you idiot (talking to myself here), Blanche Thebom is on the recording.)

I should have added, too, how funny much of it is: witty libretto by W.H. Auden and Chester Kalman and a sardonic yet moving score by Igor.
-

Jennie Tourel is on the Venice premiere with Robert Roundsville and Elizabeth Schwarzkopf. Blanche is on the Met recording with Hilde Gueden and Mack Harrell.

I have trouble with that kind of thing, too.
I might be the only one here, but Strauss's Salome and Elektra. And based on what I've heard, and much to my surprise, I'd be interested in getting into Schoenberg's Moses und Aron.
-
I also admit I'm snobby: I do not consider operettas and musicals, even though opera houses now stage them, opera. When "rock opera" composers prove to me they understand what opera and composition are, then I might consider them opera composers.
-

I have the same problem with Strauss that I do with Wagner: too damned long. I like Ariadne auf Naxos and a lot of Salome but I find Elektra an ordeal, and Der Rosenkavalier endless. I tend to jump in German opera from Beethoven to Kurt Weill.
The playwright von Hoffmansthal's much of the problem. His condescending letters to Strauss - I'm the writer and a genius and you are a moron, Strauss, who knows nothing of high art - are such drivel.

I don't read my horoscope in the newspaper every day, but today's really spoke to me with regard to the situation with my mother:
"You can choose not to spend time with someone without giving up on him or her. Hope for the best outcome for the person, and send love and a good thought that way. Then do what's best for you."
As her power of attorney, I do have more of an obligation than love and good thoughts, but this goes along with the Facebook meme I saw that said, "You don't have to set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm."
-
It is sad Ginny. Your true mother, the one you have lost, would want you to take care of your physical and emotional health. Finding the right balance is difficult.

Amen. The Macbeths made my 2006 hell laying guilt on me for not being in Ohio enough to take care of my dad. Much as I miss him, I'm glad he went when he did. I was lucky, DR Ginny; I wish your situation were easier.

There is also the British comedy "As Time Goes By" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIomAIS9cks), starring Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer, with the theme sung by Joe Fagin

Back from a WONDERFUL afternoon concert of Lerner and Loewe.
When I looked at the program I was thrilled to see the generous number of songs being presented. I didn't recall if DR Elmore had said that the instrumental ensemble would be only five players -- piano, bass, cello, woodwinds, and drums -- but they were wonderful and the arrangements were beautiful. The ensemble sounded like a chamber orchestra here, a full orchestra there, and I loved unique touches such as cello only (as a duet with vocalist) on "Before I Gaze at You Again", and Rob Berman joining at the piano for a four-hands "With a Little Bit of Luck". Some especially beautiful vocal arrangements included a male/male duet of "How to Handle a Woman" followed by a female/female duet of "I Loved You Once in Silence". Stunningly and almost hypnotically beautiful moments, these.
Did Rob write his own narration/commentary? Here's yet another thing he makes look so damned effortless. It was fascinating throughout, and there was generous audience reaction upon hearing various and sundry facts and revelations about the lives and careers of Messrs. Lerner and Loewe. The orchestrators received enthusiastic applause, and it was a beautiful concert all around.
-
Billy Joe made it to Connecticut today, too!
-
Our director Chase posted these two shots from the matinee today.
The projections were great. Some beautiful images of Scotland, especially, and I was quite taken with a B&W photo of Paris with the lower part of the Eiffel Tower in the background. It was so "perfect" that I wasn't sure if it was a composite or an actual straight-on photograph. Well done all around.

DR ChasSmith, I'm glad the program went well and that you had a goof time. Yep, Rob wrote the narration, which I thought was quite wonderful, and the vocal arrangements. He also wrote the cello solo "Before I Gaze At You Again." We were happy to give it to him. How was the crowd?

I wonder how it compared to the other audiences at the other shows, but this crowd seemed totally into it and thoroughly appreciative.

Thank you, ChasSmith, for the review. Sounds like a wonderful afternoon.

Listening to some Mahler by conductor Kirill Kondrashin - he recorded seven of the nine symphonies for Melodiya. These performances are so interesting and I love them so far. They are a far cry from Bernstein and the NY Phil which sound positively genteel. These are rough and ready and Shostakovichian almost, which makes sense since Kondrashin did a brilliant set of Shostakovich symphonies and the orchestras here are Russian. But these are so riveting and exciting and FAST - the 6th symphony, which I haven't gotten to yet - the final movement is a whopping nine minutes faster than the 60s Bernstein - well, that I've got to hear. The sound thus far is up close and personal and crystal clear. I guarantee you you've never heard Mahler like this - it's kind of a breath of fresh air.

The client didn't know her own name
:o
Was there a reason she didn't know or just an error on her part?
She didn't know she had hyphenated her maiden and married names on all her government issued photo IDs ...She applied for the loan with her husbands last name and then wanted her deed in her maiden name. "Cause I never changed it". Had her credit cards in variations ... PICK ONE!!!!!'
Oh my.

We had the most incredible sunset tonight. The colors were just beautiful. Clouds filled with peach and pink and the softest yellows against a soft blue.
Lovely.
