Well, you've read the notes, the notes were in Technicolor, and now it is time for you to post until the Technicolor cows come home.

And the word of the day is: SERENDIPITY!

I also think it's weird about what sound people do...turning the sound of the mics up and down as the actors speak or sing. I'd ushered for several touring shows and got to watch the sound people do that. I know that they know what they're doing and practice a lot, but they can still not be exact. The couple of times that I ran sound with microphones, I was too inexperienced and it was too complicated for me to be able to do that (and I never even thought about that), and it just semed so unnecessary.
-
They don't leave them up in group scenes because they think the sound gets too washy - but I prefer that to missing words or struggling to hear people while the sound reaches whatever volume setting they have - seems rather silly to me, and I can tell you it's a pretty new thing, maybe less than a decade old.

Happy Birthday to bigbuck!
Same from here - happy birthday. bigbuck!

Good morning to all
-
A recent trend for me that I hate is plays having the actors being miced. These are small theaters usually less than 200 seats. I find that the actors cannot have any emotion or levels to their performances. It think it makes for lazy acting or a bandaid for weaker performances.
-
Good morning, all.

Good morning , I feeling better yesterday but my throat is feeling sore again today.... Hopefully it will clear up soon

The one that leaps to mind is the originalBroadway production of La cage aux Folles ... Which I saw with my then fiancée Vixdadtobe. And his sister and her husband a few days before our wedding in October 1987. That was lavish and lovely.
I saw the (2nd?) revival with the Vixter a few years ago ( the one with Kelsey Grammer and Douglas Hodge) which was a very stripped down version

Well I have to go be annoyed

Best miking / non-miking I've heard in the last twenty years was The Fantasticks. The actors wore nothing, and from my front row center seat I could hear no amplification whatever throughout the show. Every actor's voice came from that actor, whether close or distant, and every one of them knew how to project. A rare treat that added immeasurably to the experience of the show.
I need to find this, but I remembering reading somewhere that the people in the booth are controlling something besides lights, and that there are, in fact, hidden mics (in the low ceiling?), very strategically placed and used very subtly for the benefit of those in the more distant seating areas. If that's the case, then so be it, but in my perfect seat (thank you, TDF and the nice lady in the box office) I hadn't heard anything so beautiful and natural in years.

I never saw the original, or any company's fully realized production of the original, so I think I enjoyed the revival more than a lot of other people did. I didn't even mind the smaller orchestration, which is unusual for me.

Jack, I hope we hear good things about your medical treatment bring sorted out. I was thinking about why I had both and it was because I didn't have surgery, the radiation was to shrink the tumor and the chemo was to kill the cancer cells.
If they believe they removed all of the tumor your oncologist might just be looking for chemo to kill stray cells that may be floating around and not see the need for radiation as well
I have been praying for you and your medical team. Sending love and vibes your way

It sounds like you were sitting in the same place where we were when we saw the Fantastiks. Yes perfect seats, it was as if you were part of the action and there was no one else in the room. It was almost surprising when the audience Laughed or applauded and reminded you it was not jet you and the folks on stage

I enjoyed it very much. But I remember how amazing the first one was. I think the chorus of Cagelles. (?) was half or maybe even of third of the original. And that original set....

Here's to a fine day in the Buckeye State, DR Elmore.

Busy day ahead of me. I need to record a few songs for someone to practice to for a little - very little - thing we're involved in this weekend. And this afternoon I'm attending the retirement par-tay for a friend who has been music director at one of the largest high schools in the area for the past thirty years or something close to that.
-
Thursday morning greetings! Today is a full party prep day for me, because parts of tomorrow and Saturday will be taken up with AAUW obligations.

I am ready to hop into my red Hyundai and head for Miami University.
Hope you have a productive day, DR Elmore!

TOD - University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music's THE BARTERED BRIDE. The opening number was all magenta, turquoise, goldenrod, and lime green - sounds ghastly, but it was beautiful.

Here's another question for the class re I Do! I Do!
The original orchestration by Philip J. Lang includes two pianos in addition to the traditional pit orchestra. (In my listening so far, I can tell that there are two only in just a couple of places on the original cast album.) The question is: were those pianists in the pit, or on stage? What was the concept? It's not like they were representing the two characters -- or was it?
-
Such nice notes....I love the set and the lighting from what I see in the photos.....
Thanks DR VIXMOM and all Dear Readers. I will of course post the results when I get my doctor's call.
Red car vibes for DR ELMORE.....

Have limited exposure to big shows. My favorite production design was "Wicked".
A close second was "La Boheme" (Baz Luhrmann's production).

Light in the Piazza, Lincoln Center
I agree with Light in the Piazza, but I only saw it on TV. I know that it's not the same as seeing it live, but it was lovely to look at.
-
Of the shows I've seen live, I thought the 5th Avenue Theatre's production of The Secret Garden was gorgeous to look at. And their production of Sunday in the Park with George with Hugh Panero a few years ago was great, too.

I listened to mine yesterday and also enjoyed it very much. :)

Darn, it is raining again. I thought it was done for the day. I hope it stops soon and we have a clear afternoon. Keith has arranged his schedule to help with planting around our building and 2 other buildings.

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.......I can't think of any production that I thought was particularly beautiful.....many have had great set/lighting design, but I can't think of one that stood out to me....maybe it's my meds!

I am home from Miami U. i sorted through 24 cartons today, making notes, explainung what things were, seeing things I had totally forgotten about. I have some arrangements for two singers named Dan andJohn, and I have no idea who the hell they are!
-
Back tomorrow and Monday, possibly Tuesday as well.
-
I have spoken to DR Ginny about our Saturday party plans, and I am ready to sit for a while with my family before I crash.
-
DR ChasSmith, I believe the orchestra for I Do! I Do! on Broadway was onstage, behind the set. Phil Lang really hid those two pianos in his orchestration.
-
No call from the doctor yet.
Not surprising. Thanks for the update.

Back from two run-throughs - one with costumes, one without. First was low energy, second was back on track. The show is looking pretty good now, lights-wise, and sounding better with each run.

Work was irritating. A project that I've been working on for more than a month now is being redesigned but I wasn't told. And I had a lot of information the designers wanted. So, we're communicating at least. But they want to get together Monday when I'm in Austin for my conference and I don't know if I can get anyone to take my place.

My nephew is getting ready to leave for Prague, Salzburg and more for more than a month. I don't know my sister can take it.

About once a week or so depending on her work schedule. We text every other day or so and usually have a Facebook message session every few days

It will be nice for him, but it'll be the longest he's ever been away from home. But he won a scholarship that's letting him play French horn in cathedrals over there and to study music while he's there.

Fred MacMurray is now in drag and Bing is singing "Small Fry." This is a strange movie.

Ate a bit of chicken enchilada and pasta with meat sauce from the hot food bar at Gelson's - not much of each. Earlier I'd had a slice of pizza from Big Mama's pizza down the street from our theater - the biggest slice of pizza you can possibly imagine - it was quite good actually.

Well, I decided at the last minute to go to Dairy Queen. I hadn't been there in quite a while, so I went. :)

Listening to music and endlessly dealing with the wacky way the Group Rep has of doing things - I've written several snippy e-mails over the last few days - they're way of working is not to my liking at all - and they should learn from us outside directors and change - it would be for the better. But I certainly better understand why they do eight-week rehearsal schedules. Starting Tuesday I should be fine to be there for all upcoming rehearsals and rehearse we damn well will. Since I'm not calling the Hit Song cast on Saturday, I may attend the noon to two rehearsal.

Good night
