Title: THE SECOND PERFORMANCE
Post by: bk on June 12, 2017, 12:42:16 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of the second and last performance of this iteration of Hit Song, and now it is time for you to post until the iterated cows come home.

I wish I could say that I liked Evan Hansen.  I am a minority of one.

Now I liked the number from COME FROM AWAY.  Of course, I have heard it many times on Sirius radio's Broadway channel.

I will shortly begin my drive to Miami University.  I hope I can finish up this round of work today.  I'd like to spend part of tomorrow here working on Guys & Dolls.  I am determined that we finish it in the next week.

Since I did not watch the Tonys, I just saw the list of winners. I was really rooting for Come From Away, so I'm very disappointed by its winning so few.

DR TCB, I saw one number from Dear Evan Hansen on a talk show several months ago.  I was completely underwhelmed by it.

TOD - I always enjoy the Tonys, but last night's show wasn't the best.  Like DR Elmore, I wanted COME FROM AWAY to do better than it did.  The food-hawking bit was kind of lame, but it did give some visibility to several shows not otherwise featured.  It was a thrill to see our acquaintance Jared as Willie Wonka.  He documented the day in Facebook videos and it was fun to watch the process.

Does anyone know what Bette said that got bleeped?

Of course, my favorite Tony moment was when Gavin Creel dedicated his award to the musical theatre department at The University of Michigan.  And one of his presenters, Sutton Foster, is also an alum - Go, Blue!

Congrats to BK on the 90,000!

I never think to look at the post counts.  And shame on me, because I enjoy interesting numbers, even when they aren't big round ones.  For instance, mine, prior to my good morning post, would have been 17171.  A fine pattern, if I say so myself.

At my friend's house last night, I missed the first half or so of the opening number and what I did see of it looked absolutely awful.  I don't even have the curiosity to look at that, or much of anything else, on my DVR.

I just don't relate to how theater (theatre) is addressed -- recognized -- celebrated -- honored -- on this show.

The bleep happened a moment or two after Midler's "blowing smoke up my ass" line, which I was happy didn't get bleeped.  But I guess that woke them up enough that they had no trouble catching the next one!  :)

Totally bored with the Tony Awards last night.  Musical numbers for the current shows may have looked nice, but were unmemorable.

Why don't they write musicals today with songs that stay with you?
Title: Re: THE SECOND PERFORMANCE
Post by: ChasSmith on June 12, 2017, 05:52:11 AM
I'm afraid that what I've gleaned of the story line of Dear Evan Hansen, and the couple of numbers I've heard from it (or have they been the same number?), leave me completely uninterested.  To whom do we owe thanks for this general style?  I'm thinking Jason Robert Brown, but it probably goes back even farther.  Whatever.  It's run its course with me.
Title: Re: THE SECOND PERFORMANCE

I've come to appreciate Patti LuPone's singing more than I used to, but I wanted to enjoy seeing/hearing her and Ebersole more than I actually did in that number.  Still interested, though.

In the song at the end of the show, her vibrato seemed - oh, about three inches wide, and I missed it but someone yelled out that she was way off pitch on one note or phrase.  I'll have to go back and check that out.

Good to hear "Penny in My Pocket", which was cute enough, but the lack of any "real" Hello, Dolly! excerpt was like an elephant in the room.  And no, the band playing the title song theme for people to walk up to doesn't quite cut it by itself.

I think that and THE GREAT COMET both need to be appreciated in their entirety.  The numbers out of context leave a lot to be desired.  Maybe DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the same way, but I'm not in a hurry to test my theory on that one...

This might be a silly question, but what/where is this auto-correct function that some of you are using?

Is it a feature of this board (HHW) or of your own browser?  I'm looking through my account settings here and don't see anything.  If I did, I'd have mine turned off anyway, but I find no such thing.

So, wherever it resides... with all the silly mayhem it causes, why do you use it?  I've long been curious about this, but I so enjoy its entertaining results here that I hadn't thought about asking in a long while.

It is on my iPhone (never had it on my unsmart phones) and on my tablet.  Until I purchased new, improved phone & tablet I did not understand the complaints regarding auto-correct.

Good point about why do we use it.  I am not sure if I can turn it off.  If I can and didn't it would likely be that it also turns off spellcheck which I do appreciate.

I am extremely grateful I do not have it on my computer, though at least here it would be easier to see and catch the errors.  There simply isn't any logic or consistency to most of them.

I saw this film for the first time shortly after we returned from a family trip in a rented RV.  Keith wanted me to make sandwiches while he drove.  After I almost chopped my finger off I refused to use the kitchen while we were moving.  You can imagine how hard I laughed during the scene where Lucy is making dinner while Desi is blissfully happy driving.

This has happened to me on my work computer.  I start typing and nothing comes up. In 10 seconds, or so, all the letters I had typed appear on the screen.  It's very disconcerting, aggravating and annoying.

Don't know why this happens.

A technician once tried to tell me I type too fast.   Bah!  Nonsense.  It never was a problem on a typewriter.

No, this computer isn't very old.  Keith made some adjustments and I am using a different keyboard I don't like as much.  It starts out ok now and then gets worse.

I closed our home news page & at the moment all is fine.  I will be surprised if it lasts.  Fingers crossed.

DR JANE sometimes I have the same problem with my keyboard/mouse - but mine are wireless, and it means the batteries are low......

Thanks for the continued vibes DR ELMORE.

I was sitting with my sister enjoying my week without appointments when I got a call - I thought it was THE call, but instead it was the doctor's office asking me to come in tomorrow instead of next Tuesday....but of course I was supposed to have labs done the day before the original appt.

I called her back and asked if I should have those labs done today....and she said yes.  SO MUCH FOR NO APPTS. this week.

Of course this is the doctor who said he would call last week about the chemo/radiation controversy, so maybe I will hear something tomorrow.

Least favorite:  Kevin Spacey - he didn't HOST anything, he was an interloper in the proceedings.
Cynthia Nixon and her "comments."

Favorite:  I enjoyed hearing from the playwrights, although I didn't particularly care for any of the plays.....  Gavin Creel's acceptance speech and the BANDSTAND performance, although I do have some of the same reservations that MR BK wrote about in the notes.

So much of the choreography (except THE GREAT COMET) was aimless walking around in strange patterns until everyone ends up in a straight line....WTH is that?

http://www.npr.org/2017/03/02/517968134/first-listen-come-from-away-original-broadway-cast-recording (http://www.npr.org/2017/03/02/517968134/first-listen-come-from-away-original-broadway-cast-recording)

But now that the recording has been released, they say you can listen to it on Apple Music or Spotify (if you have/use those services).  I bought the CD, so I don't know about either of those.  Of course, you can listen to 30-second clips on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06WRPXNZ5/).

Least favorite was Cynthia Nixon's comments!!!

Not to get too political, but I agree with Elmore.  I actually liked what she said.

DR ChasSmith:  It's a function of my computer.  It doesn't matter what I'm typing or where I'm typing it.  It just kicks in.

I am extremely grateful I do not have it on my computer, though at least here it would be easier to see and catch the errors.  There simply isn't any logic or consistency to most of them.

Autocorrect is not on any of my desktop computers, but I had to turn it off on my devices (tablets, phone).  It was just too annoying.  It seemed like I was correcting the autocorrect "corrections" more than my own typos!

Has anyone ever had a major problem with typing on their computer?  I am typing but the letters are coming up long after I have typed.  The computer also, I expect to due the lag, locks everything and I can't move the mouse or close anything.

That's happened to me before, but it's always only been a temporary situation.  If I waited or came back later, it was always fixed.

Interesting!  I don't recall having such a thing, or disabling it, on any computer of mine, and I can't even find a reference for one on this HP Windows laptop.  Maybe it's a feature that some manufacturers add, others don't.

RE: the Tonys I was super disappointed that Bette Midler did not perform. I read the reason (the producers of Hello Dolly wanted to perform at their own theatre because they thought it was dangerous) and wish that they would have just had Bette alone singing if they couldn't have the whole cast.

TOD: I really enjoyed Ben Platt's acceptance speech. And while I don't think the Dear Evan Hansen number worked that well out of context I have heard so many people say great things about the that I still want to see it.

I thought that Kevin Spacey was okay as host. The opening number was the best part. And when he came out with the House of Cards cast. But I didn't love his impersonations. Maybe if they had been theatre people that he was impersonating. But that just didn't work for me.

From what I been reading elsewhere  Bette said "shit".

Is that all?    ::)

Here's her unexpurgated speech recorded by someone in the audience:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HATz7MokZ8M (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HATz7MokZ8M)

Jump to about 3:34 and she says, "I want to say thank you to Campbell Young for their, the most beautiful hair on Broadway and I am not shitting you people."

Intrigued by Natasha, Pierre and The Great Comet of 1812

David Hyde Pierce was a joy and the song sounded better than it did on the album.
Come From Away was a very touching evening of theater, and taking this song away from the rest of the show doesn't help matters. But I listen to that cast album and I still choke up at times.
Groundhog Day was surprisingly my favorite song of the evening.
War Paint: This may be the lamest song in the score. I especially hate the lyrics. But they belt it, so it might sell some tickets.

Listening to Prokofiev/Weller - what music - if you love film music you have to love Prokofiev because he was a film composer as well as symphonist and it's all part and parcel of his music.  Listening to his symphony five right now - it's just like the best film music.  The Weller set doesn't present the symphonies in order so I'm listening to the CDs as they are sequenced, which is interesting - in other words I went from Symphony 1 to Symphony 5, then after 5 we're back to 2.  The set I'm now downloading is in symphony order so that will be interesting.
