Some dimwit huckster on eBay is selling an easy-to-find CD of Prokofiev's Cinderella ballet - you can probably find it for about two bucks - for - hold on to your hats - almost $4,000.  They had the "best offer" option, so I made my best offer - $1.00.

This reporter was asking everyone who is in a show what they would say to Trump to convince him to come see their show.

Except for FARGO, the best show on television, and the season finale of THE SON, I've watched little, if any, TV this past week...not even the news.

My wife is in Los Angeles for ten days, and I'm just hanging out with Chester, my pooch; writing on my next novel and reading books.  I don't miss the tube at all.

I love sandwiches like the California Melt BK describes.

Does anyone remember The Good Earth?  Actually, maybe they're still around.  I was assuming they're not, but we all know what assuming means.  Right, class?

The company I worked for in the early 1980s was in Torrance, and we were in a nice building with our office right above a Good Earth restaurant.  I went in now and then for breakfast or lunch.  As I recall, there was little or no meat on the menu (is that right?), and I don't remember what was on their California Melt or whatever they called it, but I ate that one a lot.  That was only one of many such "melts" over the years, but my memory always goes immediately to that one.

Since the link doesn't work, I assume you are talking about SINCERELY YOURS, a remake of an old George Arliss movie, THE MAN WHO PLAYED GOD.

I've never seen either film, but I assume that Liberace was cast because, at the time, he was the hottest thing on TV.

Doing a quick bit of research on The Good Earth chain yielded very little on the subject, but some of the indirect results set me off on one surprisingly intense wave of nostalgia for my early-1980s in the South Bay.  I knew not how good I had it in those three years.

That's terrible!  My friend Margo used to be the volunteer coordinator here at the library and her "position was eliminated," also.  There were no financial issues and certainly no warning...they just cut the position on the last day of the month and she was escorted out of the building.  Margo thinks it was because the HR manager at the time (who has since been fired with cause) didn't like strong gay women who questioned him. ::)

CD

The best of Sarah Vaughn

Major disappointment. The songs chosen were too pop sounding. It had chorus that began many of ths songs. Sort of like the arrangements that Jimmy Durante did in the 60's which I like but they don't work for her. Jazz was her forte. I can only assume why these songs were recorded in these arrangements.

I went to acupuncture today. I wasn't really scheduled for this week, but my doctor is going back to China for a few weeks to attend a college reunion and I wanted to see her again before she left. Also stocked up on herbs.

We have 6 members who within  the past 10 years felt the call to become second career pastors .

That's interesting. Do you know their motivation?

I've read about a new political activism among the religious left. The religious right has been politically active, of course, for many years. The events in Washington are creating some interesting spin-off.

We enjoyed The Good Earth.

The fan is broken in the AC. The repairs are taking forever because the replacement part the man had didn't fit.

So, does that mean that it's not going to cost more than $10k??  That would be wonderful!

It ended up costing $1,000, which was more than enough, as far as I'm concerned. There is no extra for awhile.

Bummer. I love my Sarah Vaughn, but I don't think her albums ever captured all of her brilliance.

As for favorite actresses of the 1940s, Ida Lupino is at the top of my list. Great actress, great director and good singer. She's got the goods.

So, Carrie Fisher's autopsy points to factors such as sleep apnea as a cause of death. I know that DRs Singdaw and Mike Barnum both share this condition with me. If there's anyone else among us who has sleep apnea and isn't taking care of it, please learn from this lesson. It's not to be trifled with. It is a matter of life and death.

Five years ago, I was in Italy with a group of friends on a trip that was outstanding. We rented a villa in the middle of nowhere and enjoyed the serenity as well as nearby Orvietto.

Tonight, we got together for an Italian dinner that was superb. We had antipasti, homemade pasta with a sauteed spread of mushrooms, Tuscan steaks and panna cotta (of sorts). I made the desserts and packed them on ice, but some of them melted anyway, turning into a kind of vanilla soup. But the whiskey-marinated cherries were ridiculously good.

And we had some spectacular wines to go with the meal.

When I read this question, my mind said CHASE A CROOKED SHADOW.  Don't ask me where that came from.  Of course, I looked it up and it is Anne Baxter, not Ida Lupino; but how in the heck did my mind come up with that title?

Listening to, of all people, Beethoven, the complete symphonies.  Walter Weller, conducting.  I just don't go for this stuff but I decided in order to really not go for it I should probably actually listen to more than a few snippets, which is all I've done over the years.  It's a musical language that doesn't "get" to me but so far I'm at least enjoying these performances and appreciating the craft.  I'm on number three currently.
