Well, you've read the notes, the notes were gluten free and also had paid gluten, and now it is time for you to post until the gluten free cows come home.

95-100 degrees F today and very humid since storms are predicted today.  What a god-awful day.

Still, our illustrious moron of a president says climate change is not a fact and all those foolish evangelical "Christians" praying with him yesterday (vomit!) think he's God, so what do I know?

I'm happy you enjoyed Falsettos, DR JohnG.  I will never like this show. Around 1981, when March of the Falsettos was produced off-Broadway, Mr Rich, who was a friend of William Finn, placed Finn up there with Sondheim as a writer.  I remember leaving the theatre thinking, what a con job, and I've felt that way after seeing any of these Marvin musicals since.  There was the Promenade Theatre production, which added the wonderful "I'm Breaking down," and then along came AIDS and the third show became AIDS For Dummies and killed off the sweet Whizzer, when so many other characters in the piece deserved death.  People have lost hundreds of friends, colleagues, and acquaintances, and we get a sentimental piece of poor to mediocre lyrics to the message of "something bad is happening."

Yep.  It sure did, but if I want to see an honest AIDS piece, there are far better.

I agree, Elmore, that Finn is no Sondheim and some of the lyrics are fourth rate at best. But the show has its power and taking away the one likable adult character is one way of illustrating how indiscriminate AIDS can be.

BTW, if there was an influence on display in what I saw, Finn seems to have studied at the altar of Jimmy Webb. Especially in the power ballads.

I am waiting on answers to questions in "Dressing Smartly Is The Smartest Thing to Do."  I have D-sharps in the vocal line and D-naturals in the piano part because no one's proofed this Finale vocal score.  I know that if I make a decision, I may have to redo all the parts if I'm wrong, so I wait.

Back from a very pleasant drive, a very pleasant Trader Joe's wrap eaten in the car, a very pleasant Barnes and Noble visit, a very pleasant couple of other errands, and a very pleasant stop at Stew Leonard's for some food for this evening.

As you might surmise, it's been a very pleasant day.  But do you know WHY it's been a very pleasant day at every step of the way?  Because I've been in very pleasant air conditioning the whole time - in the car, in the stores, back at home.

Getting out of the car at each stop was something else, though:  instant glasses steam-up.  And then it would instantly evaporate upon walking indoors.  I don't think I've experienced it quite that consistently before.  And the air.... my god.
Title: Re: FRESHLY
Post by: ChasSmith on July 13, 2017, 01:16:44 PM
But I also had an exceptionally very pleasant drive because I took along a cassette tape of a 2003 Met broadcast of The Rake's Progress.  I did that because I was so happy to find it this morning.  When we were talking about that some weeks back I went looking to see if I'd ever recorded one off the air, and I swear I combed every last inch of the place where the remaining tapes are stored...to no avail.  This morning I looked in there to see what else I might find, and there it was, right there in my line of sight.  WTF!  Oh well.  A happy discovery, and the piece is so damned beautiful.

Had my first Freshly meal - I don't think I cooked it enough - I'd read that two minutes was the cook time, which is what I did - but then I read the packaging, which said two-and-a-half minutes - still it was hot so I think I was fine.  I began with the chicken risotto - it smelled very good as it came out of the microwave.  You're supposed to let it stand for a couple of minutes, but I didn't read that until after, too - but it did stand for a minute.  I found it very tasty and excellent and ate it all up - 550 calories.

Picked up a couple of packages and now listening to more Martinu - another performance of the fourth symphony conducted by Walter Weller, who can do no wrong.  This CD also has lots of other pieces that I've never heard and don't have.   Debating whether to tackle the top shelf of the CD closet - perhaps while it's light out.

Some microwaves are hotter than others which can determine the cooking time.  As I was reading you didn't cook it long enough I thought you probably needed to let it sit for a couple of minutes.  Maybe it just needed to sit a bit longer.

I am glad you enjoyed it.

Good vibes you reach your weight loss goal.

Speaking of AC--and mine is on at present--has anyone tried one of these units?

Homedics My Chill--it's a very compact "swamp cooler."

I had to go out and do some banking.  I saw Val on my way back in.  Someone in the building has complained again to the city agency about the elevator and the city has slapped a huge fine on the rental agent.

YAY!! That made my day.

I hope the rental agent's sensitivity training doesn't omit the part about getting up and down stairs with her leg in a cast or getting around using a walker.

I just realized that I missed this!  Congrats, Larry, and hopefully it'll get fixed QUICKLY!!

An now, I'm off to the theater for opening night of Hairspray!  My mom and a couple of her friends are coming tonight.  Hopefully, there won't be any huge goobers!  After the show, the cast is going to a local restaurant for a deli-style dinner ($15/person), so that'll be fun.

Be back later!

Listening to the last of these "new" Martinu pieces (new to me) - wonderful stuff.  Then I'll move on to a composer called Daniel Jones, whose work I don't know but is highly thought of.  After that, perhaps a movie, the second Freshly meal, and then perhaps back to Bruckner or the Kertesz Brahms cycle.

Thanks DR VIXMOM.  I am watching LOST HORIZON....the Frank Capra version....one of my favorite movies.

My question for ASK BK Day?

Do you like the movie version of THE RED SHOES?  What do you think of the stage version?

I do love the film of The Red Shoes (although not as much as Black Narcissus) - I saw the Broadway musical flop which was terrible.  I'm looking forward to this Matthew Bourne thing.

I want to see this. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QtMs9kgm2Ac)

It does look good.

Very enjoyable movie. I think I liked it better than the book.

We had our volunteer appreciation dinner at the theater where I work. They lowered the chairs and flattened out the floor of the main theater for our dinner.

I won a bottle of wine as well as a Michael McDonald pack, including an autographed photo, artwork from his latest album, a copy of his lyrics to a song and a tour bag.

Started watching the Don Siegel version of The Killers. The beginning is very different from the original version, which was fairly faithful to the Hemingway short story.

Tried listening to the Daniel Jones symphonies - rather like William Alwyn but not William Alwyn and not much to my liking.  Now listening to two Douglas Lilburn symphonies - I remember liking these very much when I bought them in the 1980s and found them on the shelf - nice to hear them again and they're lovely.

And I'm having my second Freshly meal o' the day, the steak peppercorn.  Cooked this one exactly as per the packaging - three minutes and thirty seconds and sitting for two minutes.  It needed a bit of salt but it's very good.

Me, too, DR JOHN G.

I think the book was original written as a magazine serial....I think.

I am puzzled by the idea of a ballet about a COMPOSER who wants a BALLERINA to give up dancing....I just would think a dancing composer who doesn't like dancing would be hard to present....

Did the top shelf closet - found the two-CD set of the complete Gayane ballet by Khachaturian.  Uploaded and listening to it - I have about six different recordings of the suites, but this is the only complete version - it's a 1960 Melodiya recording, in beautiful sound on the Mobile Fidelity label.  It's wonderful to hear all the music, rather than the five selections of the suite.
