Title: TWELVE DRUMMERS SITTING AROUND IN THE NUDE AND PLAYING A XYLOPHONE
Post by: bk on December 24, 2004, 12:00:01 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you are ready to celebrate at our Christmas Do, and now it is time to post until the cows come drumming home (in the nude, of course).

Since it's just after midnight, I can say with all honesty that I have no CDs in my CD player at work and no DVD in any of my DVD players.  I watched the Julie Andrews "Cinderella" last night (Thursday) and I liked it very much.  Very innocent and delightful. :)

And with that, I must say good night.  A friend of mine needs a couple of gifts for her oldest daughter (a musical-theater-afficianato-in-training) and I'm making some CD compilations for her.  I think she'll like them.  She'd better, it's what she's getting!  So, off I must go and finish the CDs, because I have to deliver them later this morning!  Good night!  And Merry Christmas Eve!

Der Brucer watched Footloose for the very first time tonight.  I think he liked it.  (And Kevin Bacon was a real cutie when the film was made.)

After watching Footloose, he turned on one of his favorite Nattering News Networks.  As usual, they weren't showing any news reporting on the NNN.  They were instead broadcasting a talking head debate, where a man on one side of a split screen was arguing with a woman on the other side of the split screen.  They were arguing about whether Church-based organizations have too much influence in America.

Maybe more people should watch Footloose.

Can talking heads dance?

Also, we splurged on ourselves today.  Der B decided to get a three-CD compilation of folk/rock/pop from the 1970s, to be played in the car.  So far, it sounds fairly good.  It includes music by Elton John (from before he was gay) and Linda Ronstadt (from before she was fat) and Jim Croce (from before he wasn't), among a number of other folk.  And rock.  And pop.

DRJOSE - house seats would be so groovy.  Because it is a subscription series, usually the best I can do when they go on sale are singles in the orchestra!  And of course I am assuming we could use MasterCard at the Will Call!  Heheheheh.  Wonderful.  Have never even considered seeing MAMMA MIA, but I do like Abba - so what they hey?

Yes, MR BK will be working working working today for his annual Christmas Eve do-waa.  Best wishes for a successful and fun event!

It is one degree here - with a -8 degree F wind chill factor, and DRJOEY's Hancock County is still under the Snow Emergency!

DVD - Love Actually - like the music, like the actors, a sweet story.  This has just replaced WHAT IF? or as it is known in these parts The Ryan Raftery Show.

CD - A Broadway Christmas.  A lovely compilation Cd produced by MR BK which finally arrived at my door from Amazon.

VCR - Joan Crawford in AUTUMN LEAVES, which I am writing about for a popular magazine and which will hopefully be seen in print.

DR GINNY - you had some lovely angels there, but was there ever a more handsome angel than Cary Grant in THE BISHOP'S WIFE?

DR CP - I bought THEATRE OF DEATH - and it was cheaper to buy it on a double feature with CIRCUS OF HORRORS featuring the lovely song "Look for a Star."

I also ordered OPEN WATER.....which looks pretty scary!

Another favorite New Yorker cartoon:

The Cratchit house on Christmas Day - a big feast on the table.  Scrooge is dancing with Tiny Tim on his shoulder.  Mrs. Crachit is saying to Bob:

"Well I suppose we have to ask the old fool to stay for dinner.:

Good morning, all!  I'm typing this as Faith Esham and the New York City Gay Men's Chorus sing "The Twelve Days of Christmas."  Right now I could use 12 noisy drummers to wake me up.

This has been a strange week, what with the non-departing ear infection and an arriving cold.  I think the San Francisco foundation office, which pays me for the recording project, has closed down till Jan 3, so I may be penniless until then due to an oversight in our overseer, and I think the heavy snow in Ohio yesterday has the carton with my family's Christmas gifts held up in Memphis, TN!  When Planets Collide!  Indeed!   It's an astrological nightmare.

As for today's topic:  outside of the Christmas compilation playing, I have no ideas.  This is a B&N day, and it should be quite busy.  When I get home, I'll veg out.  Tomorrow, before I become a social animal, I'll drag out a few holiday CDs and play them.  Here are my faves:

Choral:  The Robert Shaw Chorale
Classical:  Elizabeth Schwartzkopf, Ceremony of Carols
Pop:  Julie Andrews w/Andre Previn, Bing Crosby w/the Andrews Sisters, Frank Sinatra, Joan Baez, Broadway Christmas

DVD:  I just got something from Netflix, and there's the Bollywood movie that came from DRMBarnum

Merry Christmas Eve, everybody!

Jrand: Autumn Leaves!  That brings the memories flooding back.  Haven't seen that one in awhile...maybe I should dig it out and we can have ourselves an old fashioned Joan Crawford marathon for Christmas Eve.  I know, I know...how cliched and traditional can you get?  Dontcha just love how evil Lorne Greene and Vera Miles are in it?

And no...there is no handsomer angel than Cary Grant!

Strange to find that spaghetti is a traditional Christmas Eve thingy-do for BK; we decided last night to have spaghetti for our CE dinner, and I rather fancied such a meal was quite Out There and Rule-Breaking.  Ah, well.

In our fridge right now is stollen, apple pie, and a Yule Log (which I made yesterday for the first time ever).  Think that's enough for the two of us?  Egad! as Veronica Lodge's father is so fond of saying.

What nifty foodstuffs does everyone else have stockpiled for the coming bacchanalia?

HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVE TO ONE AND ALL! (escept tomovoz - for him I'll just say HAPPY CHRISTMAS DAY!)

CD PLAYER still contains the laundry list of Christmas cds, while the car CD PLAYER has Ella's BROADWAY cd.

Finally got around to putting the films from WARNER'S FILM NOIR CLASSIC COLLECTION into the DVD PLAYER, where THE ASPHALT JUNGLE is waiting to be watched.

From NETFLIX, I have THE CHEAP DETECTIVE and "A Morbid Taste for Bones" from the Cadfael series.

I worked until 8pm last night, and will probably be doing the same again today. . .hey! those shoppers have got to eat, too!

Good morning. And Good Holiday Spirit to all.

I wish I could attend the Do; however, I will be shivering on the church property, keeping an eye on luminarias.

The other day, my son (who likes to listen to that horrid shouting rock music) brought home a CD by an artist he had just discovered -- Tony Bennett.  So we are all happy about that. In the car CD player is "Christmas in Plaid." In the son's DVD player is a documentary about serial killers. Isn't that festive?

We all here....we all here.... a BANDWAGON reference.

It is up to 7 degrees here.

Ah yes, DRLULU.....in fact, as Joan says, Lorne and Vera have souls too evil even for hell!  If you have AUTUMN LEAVES, you might see if you also have QUEEN BEE, I am reviewing it as well, and at least Joan is rich in that one.....in AL, she has such a terrible job, typing those manuscripts for those dirty old men.

I like the concept of Erev Christmas.

I feel totally hung over this morning -- nauseated, bad headache, etc. -- without having had a single drink last night. Sort of takes the fun out of a hangover, no?
I'm hoping it will pass once I eat some toast. Think I'll skip the coffee.

Good Morning!

I'm on a break right now from my various errands and activities today...

My radio went off at 7:45... My alarm clock at 8:30... And I got out of bed at 10:00... ;)

*The new upstairs roommate apparently had some gathering last night - and everyone seemed to be walking around a lot.  Even my roommate who tends to sleep through anything and everything was slightly annoyed.  -Oh, and there's a new dog next door, an older Jack Russell Terrier, and he, apparently, likes to bark... a lot.  Ah, well...  I did eventually get to sleep around 3:30.  -When am I out of this apartment?!?!?

;)

In any case...

I made it in and out of the grocery store this morning without any major hassles.  It was busy, but it wasn't crazy.  And I guess it was a sign of some sorts: all my favorite brands of baking supplies were on sale - flour, sugar, chocolate chips, oatmeal, butter, cream cheese, peanuts, etc...  -Guess what I'll be doing Sunday and Monday?  :D

As for Today's Media Check... Nothing yet.  I do need to select the next batch of CDs-I-bought-years-ago-but-never-listened-to to bring back with me when I head back north tomorrow morning.  Sadly, I realized last night that a lot of my Christmas CDs are no longer in my collection.  I left a batch at a job a few years ago, and they're still there.  Ah, well... They're all replaceable.  -Luckily, I didn't have that many, but each time I looked for a particular CD last night, I realized...."Oh...."  -I was hoping to find my copy of Tuck Andress' solo guitar Christmas Album.

In a few minutes - at Noon EST - to be exact, I shall be heading out to Carytown to finish up some more Christmas shopping for my nieces and nephew.  My brothers said to go the clothes route, but I really do want to buy them toys this year, so...  -I'll most likely throw in a gift card to The Gap and Old Navy too.  Best of all, I can walk to Carytown - the exercise will be nice, and there are lots of people out and about.  It looked very festive when I drove through it all on my way back from the grocery store.

OK...  I'll be back...

Laters...

Lulu's back!  Weren't you the one who also loved When Michael Calls?  Of course, considering how spotty my attendance has been, you very well may have been here all along.   ::)

Joke's on me department:  get to my Jewish retirement home gig last night, which I had somehow thought was "background music" for a little nosh soiree they were having, only to find out, Nooooo......they are expecting a "concert" by moi.  So I had them all throw out requests.  Played everything from Begin the Beguine to Moonlight Sonata to Shalom Chaverim to Theme from Exodus (I made them laugh when I told them the lyric was written by the most goyische person imaginable--Pat Boone).  A nice old lady came up to me afterwards and said "Listening to you play just transports me to a different place."  I thought, "Where?  Beaverton?"  (That is a little joke for those of you who know Portland and its environs).

Media check:  CD:  Martin Pearlman and Boston Baroque's Brandenburgs.  The Brandenburgs have always spelled Christmas for me, don't ask me why.

DVD:  La Dolce Vita.  I believe I have mentioned this before, but may I just say that Richard Schickel has got to be the worst commentator ever in the history of DVD commentators.

And if I may put on my Episcopal Church Director of Music Ministries Hat (kind of like a Pope-Hat, only slightly less grandiose), since we do this as part of our liturgical year--the 12 days of Christmas actually start tomorrow and continue until Epiphany, so you do indeed still have time to order your maids a milking and other sundried paraphenalia in time (at least for any orthodox inclined friends and/or family).

Happy Christmas Eve Day everyone!

I am already on the BBC site, waiting to listen to the Michael Ball Christmas Concert that will begin in just a few minutes.

We’re having an ugly, gray day here in the land of Sunshine.    They say it will rain tomorrow as well.  I feel so sorry for the kids.  All those shiny new bikes and scooters and dolls with their carriages and puppies that won’t be able to go outside and play.

I apologize for posting before reading.  I’m still in a mad rush to get this house in order before the boys arrive.  It is only my junk left to put away and I’m only half done.

I woke up this morning feeling very calm.  Keith and I both agree to just make Echo comfortable with prednisone and to continue her antibiotic for the parasite, which may also help the cancer.  Our regular vet concurs with our decision.

Is it possible to get a hangover from marzipan?

More likely from something I forgot about and you just reminded me of, DR Jose. Last night I ate (drank?) quite a few pieces of "Imported from Hungary" dark chocolate liqueur cherries. Yummilicious. I discovered these at Trader Joe's yesterday. When I was a kid, they were a HUGE Christmas treat. And very expensive (we had them even after we settled in Canada). At TJ's a large box is $3.99! To get back to my hangover, it states on the front of the box for all to see: "Sale of this product to persons under the legal age for purchasing alchoholic beverages is unlawful."
Hmmmm....
I think I shall take what remains of the box to tonight's party and put it out for all to enjoy. They're wrapped in pretty gold foil and look quite festive.

Dear Friend BK, I'm listening to Harvey's CD as I have lunch before dashing back to the mad and frenzied throng at B&N.  It's quite wonderful.  What is he doing before "Try to Remember"?  And is there any more beautiful song than "The Room Is Filled with You"?  It's the one number on COLETTE COLLAGE that I wish I had the chance to rescore; I don't feel I do Harvey and Tom justice there.

I'll check back in after 5:15 EST.  Who's got the home fries while you fiddle with your tuna pasta salad?

Oh, to be at the Christmas Eve festivities chez Kimmel!

Last night I saw a perfectly splendid production of Richard Brinsley Sheridan's The School for Scandal at the Mark Taper Forum.

Somehow, I had never seen or read this play previously, and I discovered a thoroughly marvelous comedy written and set in the late 18th century.  Filled with rapid repartee, wickedly clever epigrams and conceits such as secret assignation, concealed identity and a lover hiding behind a screen in the boudoir, the play offers biting comment on hypocrisy amongst that segment of the upper class consumed by gossip.

It was not difficult at all to draw connections from this play to our own society, enamored as it is with celebrity gossip and a little too gleeful in its delight in schadenfreude.

Mr. Brian Bedford directed and starred in the production, and every player in the large ensemble was excellent.  The regal facade of an upper-crust estate served as the unifying element of the set for the Taper's thrust stage.  Special mention must be made of the costumes, which were not only sumptuous, but also superbly defining of character.

So I'm unbathed, in my schlubby clothes, drinking egg nog, eating bad things, and vegging...until I must bathe and hie myself hence to BK's Christmas Bash!

Yesterday I sent the following email Christmas missive to two of my oldest and closest friends in Lexington, Kentucky.  It read:  "This time of the season must give us pause as we ponder the eternal question:  What do you do with a General when he stops being a General?  Following the old man wherever he wants to go, your pal, Chuck."

The reason for this message is we have had a running debate going on for years (usually when watching White Christmas) what is the worst Irving Berlin song ever:  What Do You Do With a General When He Stops Being A General? or We'll Follow The Old Man, with Mr. Monotony thrown into the debate as well as a song I really can't stand, Always.  My choice for worst usually changes with whichever one I'm hearing.

Dunno, I have just never much cared for it.  I find it rather bland and at the same time irritating.  I believe Groucho Marx tells a story at a live concert (recorded on record) that George Kaufman had an antipathy for the song as well...so I'm not alone.  I have several seemingly popular tunes like this I can't bear...I've always disliked The Anniversary Waltz and the Beatles' Yesterday too.  Then there's Alley Cat...but that's entirely different story...it deserves my scorn and contempt.  An awful, cheesy tune!

Good Afternoon!

Back from shopping excursion #2 for the day.  Various missions accomplished!  Stocking stuffers, yet more groceries and some yummylicious bread from my favorite bakery down the street.

*In the "spirit" of the season, unfortunately, I almost witnessed a hit and run - a car was trying to pass another car and ended up scraping one of the cars parked on the street.  And the offending car drove off... then started to pull over... then started to drive off again... Thankfully, since traffic wasn't moving that fast, there was more than one person who saw the car and started writing down the license plate number.  The woman who's car was hit was safe and sound - she was actually about to get into her car!  She ended up seeing the incident herself.  She seemed rather calm, and I think all the good Samaritan's made her feel better too.  I didn't see the accident proper, but I did see and hear everyone reacting and helping.  -It was kind of neat - people just started saying the license plate out loud as a sort of pnemonic device (I guess).

So, now it's time for me to cut my hair - which shouldn't take too long, I seem to be getting the hang of it now - those guides sure do make it easy.  Then on the way out to Steve's I'll make a stop by Old Navy and Tower Records for some more last-minute shopping.  Then dinner...  I think Steve is making his famous ham!  :)

I'm back, and thank goodness only have to leave once more to get mail.  Gelson's at ten o'clock was insanity personified - especially in the bakery department.  I ordered the cake in advance, but that did not make one or two whits of difference, we all had to wait our turn.  My turn took a half-hour to come up.  Then went to the bank which was unusually croweded (wonder why) - I say unusually because for some reason this branch of Bank of America never ever is crowded.  The longest I've ever had to wait was five minutes, and that includes today.

Now, might I just ask what on earth is Cialis?  I keep getting spammed by people thinking I should be taking Cialis, and all I can think of is the cialis from the pialas has the pellet with the poison but the fliagon with the driagon has the brew that is true.

Christmas music on on the CD player in the house here in Delaware:

Currently playing: Narada's Christmas Collection, Volume 2.  Interesting collection of artists, mostly instrumental.

On deck: Gloria Estefan's Christmas Through Your Eyes, Michael Martin Murphey's Cowboy Christmas, and Mason Williams' A Gift of Song.

But we've still got things to do.  Der B has some last-minute shopping (including gift wrap, which we didn't pack with us when we moved and thus are still rebuilding our supply) and a gift card for his son-in-law, probably from Lowes).  I've a mushroom spread to make for appetizers, and I'll have to help der B with whatever he's planning.

And this must all be done with six dogs romping around.  What a joyful season!

MUSHROOM SPREAD:

Start with fresh mushrooms.  Good ol' white button mushers are fine.  I'm using a tub that contains 24 oz.  Brush off the dirt with a damp cloth, and trim off the ends of the stems, then break into pieces with your hands and dump 'em all into the food processor.  Ready, set, pulse!  Get 'em ground up fairly fine.

While you're at it, pulsing up a little onion doesn't hurt, not too much, a small onion will do.

Put a large skillet over a medium flame and heat up a T or two of oil.  Add all that ground musher and onion, and let cook, stirring on occasion.  You're making what's called a duxelle.  The idea is to evaporate as much of the water out of the mushrooms as you can, which intensifies their flavor.  Adding some cayenne or Tobasco can be nice at this point, but isn't necessary.  When they've cooked down as far as you think you can, take them off the heat and let it all cool down.

In a bowl, scoop out the contents of a 12 oz. container of Philadelphia Whipped Cream Cheese (or two, depending on how much mushers you've cooked up, and how much spread you're making).  Add the cooled musher mix and stir to blend.  Put the spread in attractive serving bowls (glass is nice) and chill in the refrigerator.

Serve with crackers or toast points.  Some of your guests won't know it's mushrooms, believe it or not.  Be warned, however, that other guests have been known to grab the serving bowl and hide with it, savoring every bit of the spread for themselves!

I just had my nice Christmas Eve laugh, courtesy of son Gabe.  I had joked in that newspaper article about my research I posted here a while back that my kids were the only 8 and 6 year olds who knew who Frances Farmer was.  Well, I just got them the 5th season of The Simpsons, and I had forgotten there's an episode with a great joke Marge makes about her "crazy mother", who used to play as a schoolgirl with her childhood friends Zelda Fitzgerald and, you guessed it, Frances Farmer.  Gabe just ran back to the office shouting "Dad!  Dad!  Marge Simpson's mother used to play with Frances Farmer!"  :)

From Howard Teichman's biography of George S. Kaufman (the section about The Cocoanuts):

"George hated music so much," Irving Berlin volunteered, "that if I'd written 'Rock of Ages' he'd have thrown it out."

And,

"Kaufman allowed Groucho to ad lib on stage, the only actor he ever permitted that luxury. Of course, when the ad libs failed, Kaufman was quick to criticize.

"'Remember, George, they laughed at Fulton and his steamboat,'" Groucho apologized one afternoon.

"'Not at matinees, they didn't,' Kaufman snapped."

Yes, we've had that Irving Berlin debate before. I think "I'm an Indian, Too" is lousy, and that's not said in the spirit of political correctness. I've never liked the song ever.

I think "Always" is lovely, and those two "general" songs from WHITE CHRISTMAS are also OK by me.

Merciful heavens...a STOLEN apple pie?  Moi?  Now I ask you.

Stollen is a German bread, very Christmas-y and something like panettone, with a bit of fruit and nuts and a niceish lump of marzipan in the center.  Yummy indeed with coffee.

Interesting that nobody questioned "Yule Log."  If anything, I would have thought THAT would be the food item to occasion comment.

Jrand: I ADORE Queen Bee.  "Darling, a party is to women what a battlefield is to men...oh, I forgot.  You weren't in the Army.  Something about drinking, wasn't it?"

JMK: I'm making another one of my occasional pop-ins.  I'm just lucky that my friends here put up with my here-today-gone-tomorrow ways.  Yes, I'm the "When Michael Calls" one.  :)

We just went to see (finally) "The Incredibles."  What an amazing looking movie.  Usually praising a film's production design is a case of damning with faint praise, and I certainly don't mean to do that.  But WOW.  I love the Populuxe look, and this movie has that in abundance.  Seriously, it's worth seeing just to LOOK at, much less watch.

My spaghetti's al dente, so ta for now.

A very busy day here. I was out lunching with friends and then he figured out finally which digital camera he wanted to buy his wife, so off we went to get it. He luckily got the last one - a nice Canon 5.1 megapixel unit. I'm jealous, especially since I was fiddling with my camera this afternoon and shot some pictures which were full of white splotches (and we've had no snow!) I'm seriously thinking of getting a new one after the first of the year.

We stopped by Target for him to get some Elton John CD set, and I picked up DE-LOVELY (which I'll probably regret in the morning, but I can always sell it to some used sites.)

Everything is going well, kitchen-wise.  Now all I have to do is simmer and wait and wait and simmer because all my work preparing is through.  In about an hour and a half, I'll start the final stages of everything, and at six I start boiling the spaghetti noodles so that people can start stuffing themselves around six-forty.

The Christmas Song
(Torme-Wells)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like eskimos

Everybody knows some tofu and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight

They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys
And goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly

And so, I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although its been said
Many times, many ways
Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas! Merry Christmas to.. You!

Actually, DRFrancois, about a month ago, I posted that if anyone wanted a copy of my Christmas CD, they should PM me their address and I'd send them one.  No one responded!

I handed out a couple at Bruce's Dec. 6 reading, and I mailed a few to other DRs whose addresses I had.  If you'd like one, let me know.

Well, dear Elmore, I think you have MY address!!!

So how were the throngs at B&N today?

So how were the throngs at B&N today?

Busy, busy, busy!  Actually, all, except for one sour woman trying to jump the cashier line, were pleasant and friendly.  The lines were enormous, but the store manages traffic control very well and I think the longest anyone had to wait in line was 7 minutes.  All the customers seemed quite happy about that.

Every employee I spoke to remarked how quickly the day passed.

DRGinny, I thought I gave you the Christmas compilation when you were here in November.  My mind is turning to floop.

Speaking of food... DD and I had a very cheap lunch earlier today. We went to California Pizza Kitchen where we had a coupon for a free appetizer. This we got.(Spinach & Artichoke Dip w chips).  DD ordered potato leek soup, which she didn't like (way too thick) so it was sent back. Her salad was fine - until she found a hair in it. Back - no charge, of course. And, to make up for the hair anguish, a coupon for a free appetizer at some future time. Total bill for two soups, (one returned), one appetizer (free) a salad (mostly eaten, but returned) and a Diet Coke - $5. (But I left a tip for what would have been the bill before all this - so the tip was almost as large as the total).

FELIZ NAVIDAD, AMIGAS Y AMIGOS!

(I’m Dreaming of a)
White Christmas

The sun is shining, the grass is green
The orange and palm trees sway,
Theres never been such a day
In Beverly Hills, L.A.
But its December the 24th
And I am longing to be up north.

Im dreaming of a white Christmas
Just like the ones I used to know
Where the treetops glisten
and children listen
To hear sleigh bells in the snow

Im dreaming of a white Christmas
With every Christmas card I write
May your days be merry and bright
And may all your Christmases be white.

Merry Christmas all! Just got back from the store. We bought my mom White Christmas on DVD so I will be acquiring the tape for the time being. :-) I will try to be around but there is still cookie baking to do! White Christmas just popped up on Itunes and it is making me happy to look out the window and see all this snow! I'll be heading to midnight mass in about 3 1/2 hours so I hopefully won't miss too much of the big holiday party. Ahhh, now it's moved onto Louie singing "When it's Christmastime in New Orleans."

All of us white cotton jockey boys were appalled, I tell you!  We were aghast and agog.  Miss Blair, who has a heavy interest in holiday helper Andrew, was quite intrigued by the plaid boxers.  If Andrew is asked to stay beyond Jan 2, it will be interesting to see how this progresses.

DRs Jose, Jrand, Joey and other midwesterners - follow-up to last night's posts about Mamma Mia at Clowes Hall in the spring.  A matinee would work best for me, too, because Indianapolis is about a 2-3 hour drive from here.  Nice offer, DRJose, to arrange for house seats.

House seat story:  My first trip to NYC was in 1967, the summer between my junior and senior years in high school.  My mom worked at one of the big Detroit banks with a woman whose brother had some connection to Lotte Lenya.  We had her house seats for Cabaret, original cast, at the Imperial Theatre.  Afterwards, we waited at the stage door and I have a program autographed by 4 of the 5 principals - Joel Grey, Bert Convy, Jack Gilford, and Lotte Lenya (we didn't recognize Jill Haworth until she spoke and was halfway down the block).  My mother would never show the ticket stubs to my father because she didn't want him to know how much we'd paid for those seats - $12.00 each!

A Broadway Christmas is playing - I forget how good that album is.  Just one of those times when everything worked beautifully and magically.  Love when that happens.  I do remember the rhythm date got off to a rough start (I think it was on this album), but otherwise, perfect cast, perfect songs, and wonderful charts by Mr. Lanny Meyers.

Well I am back from the first of two Christmas Eve services I must play.  The furnace at the church was out and the sanctuary was positively medieval.  My feet are chunks of ice.  I can only imagine what the late service is going to feel like.

Re:  The Christmas Song.  There is a fairly rare version by Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 that was only released on a holiday BF Goodrich special LP (yes, there were such things in "the olden days," as my kids call anything before yesterday).  It has a quite stunning Richard Hazard orchestration and Lani and Karen sound quite fetching on it.

Yule Log means something different here, something that brings great hilarity to Betsy and me.  Every year on Christmas Eve, the local public broadcasting station shows two hours of a log burning whilst various carols play, festively entitled "The Yule Log".  It's just so very, very odd that one can't help but chuckle.

If we can have TWELVE DRUMMERS SITTING AROUND IN THE NUDE on a Xmas night, I guess we can have a drunken and almost nude Santa, no?
My conviction is that Santa sure is a... dirty old man, anyway!

I'm quite convinced some will put that on my being French, but I need more than such a pic to be offended!
Surprised, yes! Offended, no!
Was BK offended btw?
He's too busy getting the partay ready, I'm sure!

Well, this being Christmas night requires us to be PC, I'm afraid!
"Off with this picture!"

Peace on Earth!
Amen.

I just finished watching the kinescope of the 2nd broadcast of AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS, Dec. 25, 1952.  I believe I saw it when it first aired in 1952, but my first memory of watching it was after I was hospitalized with pneumonia in December 1954.  I know that NBC broadcast it for several seasons, and I'm thrilled that this kinescope of the opera exists.  It was great to see it again.

I am getting two kinescopes next year (hopefully January--counting the days) that I have waited years to obtain.  They were an unexpected early Christmas present from a friend.  I'll let you guess who's in them.  :)

Then it has to be Frances Farmer but i have no idea what television work she did.
If it had been a musical theatre broadcast like the Barbara Cook YEOMAN OF THE GUARD or BLOOMER GIRL, I'd be more interested!

Well, I gave two hours of my life away tonight to DE-LOVELY. I absolutely loathed the framing device. Just too twee for words and a downright annoying way to work in some songs.

I found most of the musical moments pretty painful. Kevin Kline scaling back his own singing was bad enough since he sings SO much in the movie, but if he was going to immulate Cole Porter vocally, why not go all the way - Cole was left handed, and Kline is right handed, making no attempt to do otherwise. A small but telling detail. I think this movie was made by people who weren't interested in the details.

Wasn't that the most dreadful Ethel Merman imitation ever on "Anything Goes"? And all of the pop stars who graced stages to give their (inappropriate) renditions of Porter tunes - just forgettable, non-period renditions. An Alfred Drake imitator who was a tenor and not a bass-baritone. A Patricia Morison imitator who belted "So in Love" from her chest. Oh, poor Cole must have been rolling over in his grave.

I was SHOCKED at how mediocre John Barrowman's "Night and Day" was. I was certain he'd nail it, and he just didn't come close.

Did I like anything? The steady streams of handsome men were appealing to look at, but who were all these guys? Did Cole ever have a long-time love affair with a man, or were they all just playthings? The movie hinted that his male companion at the end was deeply in love with him but was banished from Cole's court near the end. With so much else wrong in the movie, was this true or another fictional motif in the film?

See what I mean? When they get so many things wrong with songs out of their place in time and people not being close to their real-life counterparts, it's hard to buy ANYTHING the film put forth. Or at least it made me wonder what was true to life and what wasn't. I'm going to have to drag down one of my Cole biographies and get the real story.

Merry Christmas Eve to all!

I have been keeping up with the posts all day, and now I finally get around to posting myself.  I have had a lovely christmast eve-day here in ellensburg with my dear folks.  My sister was unable to get time off work, so it's just the three of us this year.  Feels a little strange.  Gone are the festivities of years past...just a nice quiet dinner of leftover homemade chicken soup after a day of helping my mother clean out the back storage room.  That, she said, was all the Christmas present she wanted...help sortiing through old books and stuff and getting it cleaned out.  So my father and I spent the afternoon doing that.  Before that I spent a lovely midday with three old friends of mine from high school.  Of us four girls, two are now married and have children, so my single friend and I got to have lots of baby-holding time.  My friend Evie has two sons, a 3 year old and a 7month old, and Amber brought her 6 month old daughter...all adorable children.
I just woke up from a rather long post-dinner nap.  At 10 we will go to Christmas services at our church.

DRFrancois, I don't believe it's mine.  A few years ago I did a huge Christmas medley for a British conductor, Martin Yates, and the truth is that I have no memory beyond John Williams' "Merry Christmas" from HOME ALONE and "White Christmas" of what's in it.  It's possible that "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" was in it, and this is my arrangement, but I realy don't know!

Good Evening!

Merry Christmas!!!

Whew!  After cutting my hair(!), I got all my gift shopping done on my way to Steve's...  I would have gotten it done a few minutes earlier, but NPR was playing a "story" that had me sitting in my car until it ended.  -And crying.  A beautiful story about the kindness of strangers.  I need to look up the information on the site later on.  In any case...

Dinner at Steve's was fun.  We were joined by his apartment mate, Rob, and another friend, Tim.  We listened to music.  We ate a lot of food.  And then we ate some more food.  Pork tenderloin, boiled new potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green beans, various breads... and lots of snacks before, during and after the meal.

After dinner, we popped in the DVD of What If?  -WOW!  What a different show it is from out front!?!?! ;)  I didn't "get" the CD until I arrived back in Richmond last night - it was waiting in my pile of mail.  I almost watched it last night, but I decided to go ahead and watch it anew with everyone else tonight.  Everyone enjoyed it...  And Bob was particularly taken with Paul Haber - Note to DR MBarnum: You now have competition!

:D

After the show, we exchanged presents, and listened to more of the weird selection of Christmas music that was playing on the Cable TV "radio".   ::)  I was getting a bit tired, and the Bob's two cats were starting to get to me too - I have a slight allergy to cats - so after some very nice hugs, I headed home.

On the way back from Steve's, I decided to drive to downtown to see the big display of lights at the James Center - I missed them last year.  I got there right at midnight.  There's a mini-carillon there that chimes on the hour.  Well, after the midnight chimes, it started playing the Star Spangled Banner.  ???  -But it brought a smile to my face.

On a more pensive note...

It was sort of a bittersweet evening for me at times.  Happy overall, but there was a tinge of, I guess, melancholy initially.  When I walked into Steve's apartment, the first thing I noticed were his Christmas trees, and on them were some of the ornaments we had bought together years ago.  And some of them were even bought "for" me.  The whole sense of nostalgia caught me off-guard, but I eventually came out of whatever I was in, and enjoyed the evening with my friends.

Then during my drive downtown looking at all the lights, this sense of "the last time" came over me.  I guess I really am in the mindset to move to New York City.  This, too, caught me off guard.  Yes, the lights were as beautiful as ever, but something definitely felt different about them, about the atmosphere.

I cried a little.

When I get back to Richmond Sunday night, I'm planning on making another drive downtown to take pictures.  I need to take pictures.

-I'm sorry for being a bit of downer right now...  I'm OK.  Growing up is a bitch. ;)

I guess I'm the first to post about Dear BK's "do."  It was swell!  Lots of lovely people.  Many Hainsies and Kimlets, from near and also from afar.  Many other folks that we tried to convert to the site over the course of the evening.  Guy Haines was there, I am told, but he had another party to go to and apparently left just before I got there, so I once again missed the opportunity to meet him in person.

The food--especially Dear BK's homemade spaghetti and tomato sauce and pasta salad--was yummilicious!

We even had an entertainment in the form of a string of movie trailers for supposed films of various genres (i.e., noir, musical, western, horror) that Dear BK created in 1980.  It was hysterically funny.

There was romantic intrigue at the party, too, but I will let one of the members of the newly affianced couple provide details on that front.

DR Michael Shayne - RE: The poster image from "Silent Night, Deadly Night"....

I remember when that movie came out.  There was some controversy - and understandbly so - about the movie.  A murderous Santa Claus?  It even creeped me out - and still does - at least the image of Santa heading down the chimney with an axe in hand.  Truly not a pleasant holiday image.  I remember the local paper pulling the ads since parents were getting complaints after the children had seen the image.  And I also seem to remember that the TV ads were restricted to late night time slots.  -And didn't the movie have an alternate title too at one point and time?

Will a convent take a Jewish girl?

(I wasn't referring to DR Hisaka. I don't know if she's Jewish. She might be. But I don't think so. But you never know.)

I have bad news for bk. DD's boyfriend called just as we got home. I overheard the conversation and they sounded pretty chummy. I did not hear the words "break-up" or "strange older man." I heard talk of spaghetti, though. The spaghetti was a hit.

Would wishing people a "Hari Crismakwanzinikah" be too politically correct?

Ahhh I always wondered why Hanukkah got the shaft in the word!! It all makes sense now! Midnight Mass was ok, but the music was interesting. It was like everyone in the church was afraid to sing. I just wanted to shout, "Sing out Louise!!!!!!" I always thought Christmas was supposed to be a celebration of joy, not timidity! When I come back this summer I am going to have to learn them a lesson or two.  I am done ranting now. It was nice we were all squished together like sardines with another family with whom we are good friends. Normally I would have been uncomfortable that squished but the thermometer in my dad's truck read -17 on the way to church so I was glad for the warmth!  :D

I'm back from my parents' house and a good time was had by all!  My mom and dad, my niece, my sister and her boyfriend were all there.  We all got gifts and no one got much more than anyone else.  I got CA$H!! as well as a gift card for Circuit City! and a NEW MOTHERBOARD FOR MY COMPUTER!!  I don't know about a fatherboard, unless the father got bored and took a hike. ::) I also got some socks from my parents.  I never would have thought to ask for socks, but they're certainly wanted.  You can never have too many socks.  At least, I'm not anywhere near having too many socks!

Anyway, the gift giving (and receiving) is all done for the season for us.  Tomorrow, we're all going to my sister's house (next door to me) to eat and be merry (not marry, nor Mary).  We will play our favorite family card game, Phase 10.  If you haven't played this, it's pretty darned fun.

Good evening all.

We have returned from night services at the church, it was a good service.

Now I am curled up in our guest bedroom watching Miracle on 34th Street and eating Ritz crackers and drinking grape juice.  This is an old favorite snack of mine....crackers and grape juice.
Tomorrow we have to get up early early in the morning to hie ourselves over the pass.  First stop is Seattle to see my sister, second to Port Angeles, over on the penninsula, for dinner with my uncle and his wife.  Should be good times.  Then I am home home again to my little apartment in Tacoma.
