Title: LYRICS-WISE

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were lyrical, and now it is time for you to post until the lyrical cows come home.

Well, today's matinee is the final performance of Hairspray!  It all happened pretty quickly, and it was all pretty intense, and today it'll all be over.

I slept well.  I had one very strange dream about my mother's sister, Jean, who was quite important to me through college. When I returned to Middletown on 1972, after a disastrous attempt at teaching, I went from being her A+ nephew to a pariah, and our communication from then until her death around 1976 was virtually non-existent.

Those seven years from 1972 to 1979, driving a delivery truck, often wishing I were dead, and too often feeling like a total failure in my family's eyes, allowed me to hone everything I needed to move to New York: I discovered I was a good director, not a bad actor, not a bad designer, a good orchestrator,  a good arranger, but a mediocre composer. If I had succeeded teaching in a podunk university in 1971, I would not have had the career I've had for the past 40 years. I'm sorry my Aunt Jean never lived to see that.

But this dream was a strange one, straddling time periods and locations, something about house sitting, something about travel.

DR JohnG, I wish I liked John Yap's recording of Man of La Mancha better since I lvoe the score.  The leading man gives a rather one-note performance, earnest, but devoid of the lunacy and humor in the character.

I agree. I felt the spoken dialogue portions were dull and lifeless, but music sections were fine. I now skip the dialogue and listen to just songs IF I would listen to this recording

But prefer Richard Kiley, Keith Michel and Jacques Brel's better. BUT Joan Diener is best on the Kiley in my opinion.

The London cast is billed as complete, but wasn't it had a lot of dialogue cuts and missing the Moorish Dance sequence.

George, Kim Criswell is on the recording along. One thing I do love from the musical that sort of irritates me with the translation I'm listening to is the phrase that describes Don Quixote. The musical calls him Knight of the Woeful Countenance, this translation offer Knight of the Rueful Figure.

What would Borodin say?

I think he would say

Take my hand I'm a stranger in paradise
All lost in a wonderland
A stranger in paradise
If I stand starry-eyed
That's a danger in paradise

PS I know he didn't write these lyrics. But the music is from the Polovasian Dances from Prince Igor and is a beautiful song.

Not too many people know this but it was the original lyrics to the Beatle song. It didn't sound right so they changed it. :-)

It is interesting reading about these Freshly meals. I am sort of shocked that you have gone so long only eating one meal a day. That always sounded crazy to me.

The West Side Story was nicely staged and competently performed by most of the cast, but without passion somehow.  It never caught fire. except twice -- the "Tonight" Quintet was quite good, and "Gee Officer Krupke" was suddenly just brilliant and funny and everything it should be.  Place was filled to capacity, and I think every idiot in the audience could subliminally detect a difference between those two moments and the rest.  Strange performance.

Sunday morning greetings!  Quiet morning for me while Fr. Richard conducts the service in Dayton.  This evening we'll probably go to Mariemont to hear Rick play the carillon again, because he's scheduled 3 numbers I want to hear:

Mouret's Rondeau (aka Theme from Masterpiece Theatre), which was our wedding processional
A Broadway Montage of "Give My Regards to Broadway" and "I Love Paris"
Scott Joplin's "Solace," which we used in my Dad's memorial service

We'll try to celebrate National Ice Cream Day with a stop at Graeter's...

TOD from yesterday:
I've looked at both kinds of pre-prepared meals. There's a place near us called Dream Dinners that I was intrigued by, but it was always closed. I finally called them and it turns out it's by appointment-only. You go there and pick out all your meals from the ingredients they have, they put it all together for you and then I think you pick it up later. It still seemed like a lot of trouble. And with all of these types of services, like Blue Apron, etc., the meals seemed like they were still about $15.00 each, which is no cheaper than eating out.

I woke up to no Internet - the router was green, the modem was lit correctly, so that means at some point during the night it must have gone down or the router must have lost it's connection to the modem.  I unplugged the router to reset and kicked the power strip where everything else is plugged right out of the wall.  So, then everything had to be reset - but it's all working fine now.

I had a busy day yesterday. I've been looking for someone to help with the cleaning for over a year now. No one's interested, even though the wages I offered were at the high end of the scale. It's a chorus of "NO"s:

No! We don't do that!
No! We don't do this, either!
No! No! No!

And Amazon will now put you in touch with a cleaning service in your area--for $42.50/hour!!

I say NO to that!

The other day I saw a friendly 20-something fellow who works at a restaurant I frequent and asked him if he'd be willing to help me. His response was an immediate YES! He's not working a lot of hours right now and had the time.

He came by yesterday. I was busy all day tossing and organizing, then he--his name is Pablo--came by after his restaurant shift and helped with the things I can't do. He wiped down the bathroom walls, which have an unusual propensity for collecting dust and lint. He cleaned the shower ceiling tile and the areas I can't reach. He pulled the sofa away from the wall and cleaned behind it. It wasn't difficult for him at all and he was done in no time.

What a difference in attitude! Unfortunately, he lives in Palm Springs now and is only visiting Santa Monica for this month. But these tasks won't need to be done again for a while and Ill ask him to let me know when he'll be here again.

As for the meal services, the ones where you cook at home don't appeal to me at all. I've looked into some of the others, but couldn't find one that served food I'd want at decent prices. Some require you to buy a LOT of meals!

I frequently buy prepared foods from my favorite food store. They have an excellent hot food bar, plus very good sandwiches and salad bar. And the prices are far less than Whole Foods Market. I just wish they were closer.

Keith had a bit of excitement early this morning.  As he was about to get his coffee he noticed smoke outside in the landscaping.  A plant was charred black and smoldering.  It appeared to have been smoldering for a long time.

He dumped 3 gallons of water on it and came back inside for his coffee.

Title: Re: LYRICS-WISE
Post by: Jane on July 16, 2017, 06:25:36 PM
15 minutes later he noticed the plant was smoking again.  Having had his coffee his brain reminded him we have a hose on our patio.  He gave the area a good soaking and then sent an email to management.  If we still had a shovel he would have simply dug the plant up himself.  It and the ground were too hot for him to touch.

Since the "fire" was next to our neighbors patio we think someone there, or possibly the neighbors above, dropped a cigarette.  We can only guess but it is rather disconcerting to think of what could have happened.

The defrosting took long enough that Richard and I had to invoke Plan B for our trip to Mariemont.  He picked me up at Mom's and we had just enough time to pick up some Skyline to eat in the park before the carillon concert.  It was a lovely program and we visited with Carillonneur Rick afterwards.  Then we tried to get Graeter's ice cream, but they were lined up out the door.  We went instead to that other Cincinnati favorite, United Dairy Farmers, and each had a dip of seasonal peach ice cream.  No chocolate for me because it's less than 12 hours until my stress test and I'm allowed no caffeine.

We did remember to stop at Mom's to retrieve my car  8)

Not a great day today, on a couple of fronts...

George Romero, 77,

and Martin Landau, 89.

Peach ice cream is a joy. I bought some peaches today, but I think I'll just eat them rather than make anything like ice cream or cobbler with them.

I spent 3 hours with Mom this afternoon, which is the amount of time it took to defrost her mini fridge.  Had a nice chat with Angie, her night nurse, about how little Mom seems to be eating.  Angie said she has an order for 2 nutrient shakes a day and sometimes Angie slips her a third one for some extra calories.

It sounds like the staff there is very good.

:o I had no idea!  After today's show when I was bringing my first load of stuff to my car, a woman who worked at the theater was in the lobby with a program and I asked if there were any left over.  She said that I could have the one she had, so I took it.  I hadn't even seen it before then.

Back from a wonderfully wonderful evening - Kay did great, the audience LOVED every second of it.  For a first time performance in cabaret Kay gave herself a seven out of ten and I told her that was silly and that it was a nine out of ten and that the one that was missing was all stuff where she got in her head and relied on John to tell her where she was, just to be sure - but later she admitted she knew where she was at all times.

The. I found an entire production of a little night music on you tube .  A very satisfying production although the the quality was dreadful and it was broken into about 12 episodes
Do any savvy DRs know where I could get a DVD of a play version that I can show my mom? I am not particularly concerned about the origin if you get my drift

If I can find my DVD of the PBS version again, I can make a copy of that...unless someone else who has it can copy it first.

I can only assume that since it was only one weekend, and they had never performed in this theater before, and it was their first show with adults, and it was Lakefair weekend, they really had no idea what to expect!  Heidi (the director and owner of the theater company) kept saying that it was all so unexpected and that they couldn't believe that it was so successful.  If you want, I can scan the program that I got and e-mail it to you.

I think that they felt lucky that they got the microphones that they were able to get.  I'd heard that there were three other mics that just didn't work.  They couldn't figure out what was wrong with them, so those couldn't be used.

Kyle Murphy played Wilbur and he said that he hasn't acted in 21 years!  Leland Brungardt played Corny Collins.  He was originally going to be the pit conductor (the kid playing Link was the actual musical director), but the actor who was originally cast (no pun intended) broke his foot and wouldn't be recovered enough in time, so he had to drop out.
