Title: THE PRODUCTIVE YET RESTFUL DAY
Post by: bk on July 18, 2017, 12:03:33 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both productive and restful, and now it is time for you to post until the productive and restful cows come home.

Lst night I watched a 1963 British film, Bitter Harvest, which starred former Disney star Janet Munro and John Stride.  It was based on a Patrick Hamilton novel Twenty Thousand Streets Under the Sun.  The film reminded me of the Jacqueline Bisset film The Grasshopper.

My neighbor in 3A, who's a complete horse's ass, complained about the stinking garbage outside my door yesterday, and last night Val's wifde Heidi and her mother came up and carried my trash to the basement.

For the record, it didn't stink.  It was broken down cardboard cartons, empty bottles and cans that I always rinse out before I toss, and nothing in the way of rotting food.  Since I for years never complained about the bicycles, cartons of books, discarded furniture and other crap he left outside of his door for months on end, color me really pissed.

I'm sure your neighbor must know that you cannot carry the stuff to the basement right now. Is it possible that he just wanted to complain so that someone would take it down?

Tuesday morning greetings!  Thank you for the congrats on my stress test yesterday.  All I know right now is that I did not have a major cardiac event while performing the test, but still awaiting the results as read by my physician.  The nurse monitoring the test, rather inappropriately (in my opinion), said some things about "abnormalities in the EKG, that may be nothing."

I do have some rather spectacular forearm bruises - the right from the failed IV attempt and the left from the successful one.

I think Nancy Walker and Yvonne deCarlo own the song.

Shirley MacLaine also sang it in "Postcards from the Edge (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkjQSpfW3iw)."

We've lost Jeremy, joshie's brother, as our reed player for the NYMF show, but our friend Josh Johnson has agreed to take over.  All is good.

Here are my former and current reed players together.

It seems that after my current round of chemo/radiation ends on August 4, I will begin a regimen of chemo infusion.....six sessions that will last until the end of November.

Since those side effects are unknown to me, I have decided not to audition this weekend.  It would be unfair if I had to miss several days because of nausea or because I was unable to speak because my mouth was sore....etc....

So I will look forward to 2018.

Back from another chicken Caesar salad, and picking up a couple of packages.  I'm listening to Kubelik's Mahler cycle, which is very interesting, whilst prepping the next Kritzerland release, which we should be able to announce end of this week or Monday - not sure which is better.

End of this week might be best.  Intrada announces this coming Monday, if that puts a dampener on doing it then for you?  Of course, they announce at end of the day, so...

Lovely review for Ode to Billy Joe:

Among movies based on country-fied hit songs like “The Night The Lights Went Out in Georgia” and “Take This Job and Shove It,” one of the most unexpected cinematic treatments given to a Red State ballad came from 1976’s “Ode To Billy Joe.” With it’s folksy guitar and plunging string line, Bobbie Gentry spun the story in 1967 of how Billy Joe McAllister jumped off the Tallahatchie Bridge, and how the narrator’s family tries to make sense of his suicide. It was fairly daring in the way that “Beverly Hillbillies” star-turned-director Max Baer Jr. revealed the reason as gay panic, putting a tragic spin onto the re-teaming of attractive young stars Robby Benson and Glynnis O’Connor from the previous big city bonding for “Jeremy.” With their love now significantly more tormented in “Ode’s” unaccepting, period setting of 1950’s Mississippi, there was no better composer to call in than Frenchman Michel Legrand. In a film scoring culture used to lushly playing tragedy, Legrand had a remarkably thematic talent for tearing romance asunder in such as scores as “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” “The Happy Ending,” “Wuthering Heights” and his Oscar-winning “Summer of ’42.” As with many of his memorable orchestral works, Legrand’s “Ode” is mainly comprised of a melody equally capable of swooning affection and heart-rending doom, his string-laden emotions spinning from delicate strokes of the piano into a full orchestra. For even if the finally manic Billy Joe thinks that no one can understand the unspeakable urges his girlfriend can’t comprehend, leave it to Legrand to fully express them. It’s the kind of sweepingly tempestuous, symphonic music for young lovers that instantly grabs the heart, keyboard, flute, harp and strings aflutter with all of the unbridled emotion that comes from raging hormones that don’t go the way its doomed hero desperately hopes for. Gentry’s vibe becomes the stuff of Shakespearean lyricism in Legrand’s passionately melodic hands with a score that stands tall with his best dramatic work, which remains just as vibrant four decades later with Kritzerland’s sumptuous premiere CD release of the original LP, whose first side as such contains the Gentry classic and Legrand’s score, with the remaining soundtrack given over to the far more indigenous country pickin’, fiddlin’ and harmonica blowin’ source music that’s a contrasting hoedown to a kid born in the wrong place, and wrong time, even if that song never hinted at first to the reason for his jump into lush, symphonic and oh-so French waters of the Tallahatchie.

I finally got the title and registration of the car transferred to Texas. It cost close to $700 and I'm still not really done. In Texas, the license plate has to be on the front and back of the car. In Kentucky, only on the back. So, there's no place on the front to put the second license plate. I have to take it to a Honda dealer and hopefully they can get it ready.

I'm on an I'm Still Here binge today. So far, I've heard Edie Adams, Christine Baranski, Dolores Gray, Anna Kendrick and Polly Bergin. Any other not obvious interpretations?

Not too bad.  Kind of quiet at work.  I went to Meconi's Italian Subs (http://www.meconissubs.com/) for lunch.  It was good, but I forgot to get it "Cosmo Style."  That's when they toast it.  I don't know why they call it "Cosmo Style." ::) But it's worth it.
