Dear reader Jose asked that the group photo posted late last night be identified: The front row, left to right - Barbara Deutsch, her son Sam Lembeck, and Sam's girlfriend, Natalie.

Middle row, left to right - Kevin Spirtas, his pal Mark, and my fiance, Rachel.

Back row, left to right - Panni, Jay, and my new pal Barbara Cutler.

By the time we took the photo, most of the other guests had departed.

Just got home to my sister's house - long night for me! But i had to come aboard and say what a lovely evening I had with all and sundry HHW folk at the BK manse. Oy, the desserts! And Noel and Joy from NYC were there - Noel and Joy... Charles Pogue remarked on their fortuitous names for attending such a gathering on such a Christmas eve type night. Mrs. Pogue and I  had not noticed said fortuitous combination of names. Noel, Noel. Joy to the World. Joy had apparently just come from playing Mrs. Claus in a Christmas extravaganza in Branson MO. They brought pix - oh, do I covet that costume!!! Anna and the DD were there, lovely to talk to them. And Jay, and more swell people whose names have gone right out of my head as I contemplate dragging my tired you-know-what upstairs to bed.

So nice to see and talk to each other - and to watch the most hilarious trailers from bogus films of many genres, that BK seems to have filmed for a pittance... that man can make a forty dollar film look like a hundred bucks!!

then I scooted off to yet-another gathering nearby, to eat from the long-anticipated cheese assortment. Now I am just too stuffed to lie down, but lie down I must. <yawwwnnnn...>

So, I hope Santa will be good to y'all. Sleep well and dream sweet dreams.

So far, Santa has been represented by my Dad and StepMom at our house.

They sent me a new pullover sweater, a cookie cookbook, and a compass.

They sent der B a new shirt, and a flashlight.

They're always sending him flashlights, and we've never figured out why.

Time to wussburger, as we've got final prep to do for Christmas with der B's family tomorrow.

Of course Noel and Joy - they left early, but it was grand having them here.

Welcome eight GUESTS and one HIDDEN.  We wish you all a very merry Christmas, even if the HIDDEN is our friend CoRA, with an emphasis on the latter.

Good Morning!

I'm about to head to bed... "Sister Act" was on earlier on HBO-Family, and now "Chicago" is on Starz!... The power of cable TV...

Once again, a very Merry Christmas to everyone!

As for what Santa brought me... Well, the package he dropped off for me at Steve's consisted of a very nice ceramic condiment serving set - three small olive oil plates, three olive bowls, and one long tray to hold the aforementioned plates and bowls.  Everything nests together, if so desired.

The package that Santa left for me under my roommate's tree consisted of two blue/aqua-green soy sauce "dippers", and a sushi making kit - bamboo mats, rice paddle, etc.  -Unfortunately, Santa must have left the package that I was supposed to give to my roommate on the sleigh.  Hopefully, once he has more time next week, he'll be able to remedy said situation.  ;)

Once I get back up to Fairfax tomorrow, I shall find out what Santa has left for me up there.  I have a feeling, like DR George, I may be getting some socks via my parents. ;)

Of course, the best gifts of the season have already been delivered... My father had a very successful surgery, and is recuperating nicely at home - and building up his karaoke repertoire in the meantime!  Hmm... ;)  My Mom is in good health.  My brother, Don, and his daughter, Alexandra, are in good health.  My brother, Mike, and his wife, Veronica, and his children, John Michael and Alyssa are in good health.  And my brother, Jay, is in good health - and will be - ssshhhh - surprising my Dad with a visit home next week.

Oh, and I'm in good health too, and have been fortunate to experience some new things this year.  To go to new places and meet new people this year.  To make some new friends this year.  And to deepen the relationships with many of my other friends.

Merry Christmas!

I actually posted this last night, long before BK announced today's Topic of the Day, so here it is again (just to make it official):
Quote
I'm back from my parents' house and a good time was had by all!  My mom and dad, my niece, my sister and her boyfriend were all there.  We all got gifts and no one got much more than anyone else.  I got CA$H!! as well as a gift card for Circuit City! and a NEW MOTHERBOARD FOR MY COMPUTER!!  I don't know about a fatherboard, unless the father got bored and took a hike. ::) I also got some socks from my parents.  I never would have thought to ask for socks, but they're certainly wanted.  You can never have too many socks.  At least, I'm not anywhere near having too many socks!

I also got a CD from my aunt, who is a nun.  It's a compilation CD of Christian rock music.  I don't listen to Christian rock music.  I don't have anything against Christian rock music, per se, but I am not a "believer," so I'm not going to be a "listener."  I will dutifully thank her for her thoughtfulness, of course, and it was very thoughtful.  Just not what I'm interested in.

And on that note (E-flat), I'm leaving the wonderful world of HHW so that I may sleep until I wake up.  Good night all!  AND MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Title: Re:THAT CHRISTMAS THING
Post by: JoseSPiano on December 25, 2004, 12:50:52 AM
OK... "Chicago" just ended...

NOW I'm going to bed...  Hopefully, I won't sleep in too much tomorrow - I don't "need" to head back up to Fairfax until around Noon, but I want to make a few stops locally just to wish, "Merry, Merry" to a few friends.

OH!  And one of my dearest friends from my high school days, Rachel - we actually met in the pit of a pretty decent production of COMPANY, she played violin - sent me her annual Christmas card and letter.  Well...  Well, it turns out she's had quite a busy year too.  She started a new job, and she had a baby girl!  Olivia!  And she was just born at the end of November.  She was about a month premature, but she's doing well.  And this is Rachel's second girl - Madeleine Rose now has a baby sister.  Funny thing is that if she was born "on time", she would have been a Christmas season baby just like her mom - and most of her mom's family!  -Must be something genetic, I guess by this point!  In any case...  I'm hoping I can swing by her place back up in Arlington too sometime tomorrow.  -I've seen her husband more than I've seen her in the past few years since he's a pretty good baritone and occasional sings with the Washington National Opera - we always seem to end up eating in the canteen at the same time...

OK... I'm starting to ramble.... OH!!!  And it also looks like I'm cooking Christmas dinner tomorrow night too!

And, once again...

Goodnight.

The presents have all been wrapped with care.  The dogs all made sure we were up in time to get that chore done.  I did have a problem at one point, when Fletcher decided he wanted to sit in my lap while I was wrapping one of the gifts.  Have you ever tried to wrap a present while a dog sat in your lap?  Have you ever tried to wrap a present while a Dalmatian tried to sit in your lap?  He was very sulky when I refused to let him stay, and pushed him off.   :-\

No time to read the notes or today's posts. I am expected at a Christmas breakfast at 10, and I have 20 minutes to get going and get there.

Just wanted to say that I enjoyed the party photos, and I hope we will be introduced to that lovely group of folks to know who's who. Of course, some people need no introduction - DRs Panni and Jay as well as Panni's DD, but some others weren't familiar to me, so a little help would be appreciated.

Also wanted to say MERRY CHRISTMAS once again and look forward to reading today's notes and posts when I return.

The potato salad is made.  The cloved ham is in the oven; I shall glazed it later.  Baked beans will be baking in about an hour (Hawaiian style, natch).  A certain DR will be happy to hear that I am listening to Michael Ball's CHRISTMAS as I bake.  Ah!  Mum baked sweet bread and rolls yesterday.

Meanwhile, I went on opening night to see PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.  This is what I thought of it:  The film is simply one of the finest two hours and twenty minutes I have spent in a theater. Cinematically speaking, this is one of the greatest stage-to-screen adaptations ever lensed. From a film perspective, there is not a single moment which doesn't work. My own quibble with the film itself is the Phantom's make-up. The romantic leads, Emmy Rossum and Patrick Wilson are simply heavenly together and Minnie Driver's diva Carlotta is spot-on, bringing out the person beneath the histrionics. Butler is charming and frightening. as well as fascintingly mesmerizing even if the character is still written as a self-centered stalker. The Phantom's backstory with its shades of THE ELEPHANT MAN makes sense for this film.
A perfectly cast, beautifully realized film.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Merry Christmas, all!  I'm dragging myself around the apartment and organizing my thoughts.  My day shall be spent with my dear friends Ron and Dona Raines and my wonderful goddaughter Charlotte.  I have to pull some DVDs Charlotte wants to borrow and I have to wrap a few gifts.  Right now I'm listening to Appalachian balladeer Jean Ritchie sing folk carols with recorder and guitar.  She just sang a carol I've never heard before, "There was a pig went out to dig."

I've already received my Father's Christmas present, which was a lot of money around a month ago.  My two brothers usually send checks, so I've got their cards to open today, and there's a package here from my dear friend Loyce Martin, a wonderful soprano, who worked with me a lot (as did DRGinny) when I was doing community theatre in Ohio, long time ago.

Dear Friend BK, the CD is now Perry como, and he just sang on his Christmas album "Love In a Home" from one of your favorite musicals.  Great timing!

Along with my Father's early Christmas gifts, I've had several other wonderful Christmas gifts this year.  I feel like an Oscar Winner here, and I hope I don't forget to mention someone or something:
  1.  I survived six monrhs of poor health, and I have a network of great and loving friends in New York, not to mention the HHW support, and all over.
  2.  Dear Friend BK came to New York, and we spent some time together for the first time in a long time.
  3.  This site introduced me to some wonderful folk all over the world, many of whom have become friends whose thoughts and opinions I find interesting.  Jane, PennyO, Panni, Danise, Michael Barnum, Jay, Ben and Baxter, Jose, td, Noel, Elan,  S Woody White and Der Brucer are all folk I've now met personally through New York visits or the telephone, and I look forward to forming closer friendships with other DRs at HHW.
  4.  I work on a recording/musical theatre project with great friends:  the Library of Congress group (Loras Schissel, Mark Horowitz, and Ray White), the New York group (Curtis Moore, Matthew Brookshire), our musical prep/editorial group (Peter Foley, Skip Kennon, Tom Murray), the advisory group (Russell Warner, Bill Hicks, Robert Kimball, Miles Kreuger, Betty Auman, David Packard).  A day with any of these folk is a holiday.
  5.  I had only two arranging jobs I disliked this year, and a lot of fun ones:  the Mickey/Judy show for Jeff Harnar and Shauna Hicks was great fun and I thank God for bringing impressario Matthew Inge into my circle of friends; I thank Michael O'Flaherty, Michael Price and the Goodspeed staff, and tony Walton for giving me WHERE'S CHARLEY?, Joseph Weis and Erik Haagensen for asking me to do DARLING OF THE DAY, Tommy Krasker and Aaron Gandy for FINE AND DANDY.

I'm very lucky, and I need to remind myself of that occasionally.  Thanks for the occasion!

I have to call my Father and wrap some gifts.  Ta!

Good morning.  I can't believe I'm up this early, but I think I should not have had that extra bit of spaghetti before bed.  But, up I am.  I've already opened one present, and it was actually a belated birthday gift from the Pogues - a nifty baseball hat from the actual Globe Theater.

Merry Christmas Morning all!

I everyone is having a wonderful day!

Well, the weatherman was right.  It's raining and gray and cold.  Only 51 degrees F.  Burr

I'll start the Christmas meal in a bit.  Baked Ham, sweet potatos and salad.  I want the ham to cook slowly.  It will have cloves and pineapple rings on it with a honey/brown sugar glaze.

The leftover will be used for some sandwiches and a big pot of ham and bean soup.

I'm glad that everyone had a nice time at the party last night.  It looked wonderful but I was a little confused until I got the joke about the shocking announcement.  For a second, I thought it was for real!

Yawn, I just want you to know I spent half the night looking for that Meatloaf Christmas CD but it is nowhere to be found!

And errrr, DR Elmore, Do you have a extra guest room?  I might be coming to NYC and staying for a bit....   ;)  ;D

Am listening to various Christmas songs as I get myself ready to head to the south of Salem to have Christmas with my sister and family!

Loved the  pics from last nights partay BK, and of course I noticed right off that Sam was holding a copy of GUMNAAM! Did you show the movie to your guests??

I hope you all are enjoying Christmas day...I know I am. After a maaaaahvelous dinner at Ruths Chris last night, my brother's girlfriend and I settled in on the couch to watch Shrek 2. Neither of us remember anything past the first 5 minutes. :)

This morning, I was woken by the screams of my little sisters to "GET UP OR WE CAN'T OPEN PRESENTS, YOU JERKS!" So of COURSE we stayed in the basement for about 10 more minutes :).

The loot was very nice this year! I got 5 teeshirts from www.randomshirts.com that I've been wanting, a cute mini karaoke machine, Ugg Slipper shoes (I know, I know, but they aren't the boots, and I won't be wearing them with a skirt *gag*), and a "gift certificate" for my mom and I to take the train to NYC and see two shows on a date I can choose! I am quite happy with that...I feel spoiled :).

I hope everyone is having a safe holiday season thus far!

Thirteen days until NYC!!

Hi all.  Yesterday was a whirlwind of activity.  At 4:45am, the DP went to work (he's a pastry chef) and I tagged along to help in the bakery.  It was a lot of fun, but today I'm paying for it as my muscles ache, but all in all, it was a great time.

In the evening, the DP and I went to my aunts for dinner and good cheer.  It was amazing we stayed awake that long, a good time had by all.

As of this morning (9:28) Eric and I exchanged gifts, I got a sushi set, a salami, some cologne, Broadways Lost Treasures II - DVD, Saalam Bombay DVD, a cool corkscrew thing, some iPod socks, this really cool Board Piano thing, and some various and sundried articles that were a lot of fun.

Were heading to moms for brunch and some more gift exchange and then Eric and I are off to the Land of Disney for a few days.  I'll have a full report on Tuesday.

Happy Holidays!!!

It's been a truly lovely Christmas morning. I managed to get DD up very early - lured with a single Christmas present. She'd received quite a bit of Hanukah loot - but I decided to give her a combo Christmas/birthday present - something she'd been really wanting - a digital camera. She’ll make good use of it on the cruise she’s taking with her boyfriend and his family in early January. (Their gift to her!) DD was a happy camper with her new camera, including charger and case. Mommy dearest went all out.

Then I opened my Christmas presents - brought home from last night's partay. I really had to control myself to wait until morning. But I'm glad I did because dear bk Claus outdid himself with the perfect gifts. First unwrapped was SCTV, Vol. 1. I love, love, love (that's 3 loves) SCTV and had been lusting after this set.
Next to have its pretty wrapping ripped away was a faboo book: PLAYBILL - A Hundred Years of Broadway Shows, Stories and Stars.  Many of you have heard me moaning and groaning about the four decades of playbills I had stupidly tossed when moving back to LA. I’d been saving them since I was a kid – what possessed me to throw them away, I’ll never know. But now I have a hundred years’ worth! Hurray!
And finally, a gorgeous book by Fellini about Cinecitta. I missed out on a planned tour of Cinecitta on my recent visit to Rome, and was truly disappointed - so this volume couldn't be more welcome and treasured. And by Fellini!
Beautiful and thoughtful gifts. I feel blessed.

After this wonderful gift opening session, we drove to the dog park, where Abie romped with his friends. - DD got to see this for the first time – she’s never been up early enough on previous visits. One of the couples at the park brought homemade, gift-wrapped treats for certain select dogs - Abie among them, of course.

Now we're home. DD's gone back to bed, snuggled up with Abie - and I'm here - wishing you all
THE MERRIEST AND BEST OF CHRISTMASES!

Well, last night's partaay sounds like a great success.  Thanks for posting the great photos.  Mr. Spirtas looks even more delightful in the group photo, than in any photo I have ever seen of him before.  And, pal, Mark, ain't bad either.

It was a wonderful surprise to wake up to find thirteen partially-clad Australian football players under my Christmas tree.  Okay, maybe it was a calendar, but it was still nice.  Who says that thirteen is unlucky?

I wonder who could have been so kind to Scrooge???

Far be it from me not to honor a long-standing tradition of Christmas (Jewish division) today, Dear Readers.  I shall sojourn to the County of Orange this afternoon and take the Dear Mother out for Chinese food.  We'll be going to a terrific (and ridiculously inexpensive) dim sum restaurant in Irvine called Sam Woo's.

Indeed, Chinese food at Christmas (not in bed) goes back to Moses.
It's a little known fact that there was a THIRD tablet brought down from Mount Sinai --  a take-out menu.

To borrow a quote from Mr. Claus himself:  "Oy, vey, am I schvitzing from exhaustion."  Up late last night and up very early this morning to play yet another service.  In the freezing cold.

We're probably going to take the kids to see Lemony Snicket, then, in a slight variation on a theme, get Thai food.

A Christmas tradition in our family is for my brother to stick a stick-on bow to my forehead. It stays there until it falls off, usually around New Year's Eve.

Drat!

I was going to write today - but who knows, I might convince myself to take the day off. Right now I'm in my bathrobe and hungry. I may wake DD and join the hungry Jewish hordes on the Boulevard (not of broken dreams, but Ventura) for brunch.
I never did buy a chicken yesterday. DD wanted Mac & Cheese for her Christmas meal. Fine. One less chicken to give its life.

Indeed, Chinese food at Christmas (not in bed) goes back to Moses.
It's a little known fact that there was a THIRD tablet brought down from Mount Sinai --  a take-out menu.

Is that the same as the story of the 4th Wiseman?  He isn't very well known.  You see, he came bearing fruit cake!

Good morning.  I can't believe I'm up this early, but I think I should not have had that extra bit of spaghetti before bed.  But, up I am.  I've already opened one present, and it was actually a belated birthday gift from the Pogues - a nifty baseball hat from the actual Globe Theater.

Cool!  I didn't know that they had baseball hats in Shakespeare's time! ;) ;D

Good Afternoon!

Merry Christmas!

Greetings from Fairfax!

I went ahead and slept in this morning, but this I didn't really fall asleep until around 4:00, getting up at 10:30 really wasn't sleeping in - more like sleeping late, I guess.  Whatever...  -I think the pitter-patter of reindeer hooves on my rooftop last night and the adjoining houses last night were responsible for delayed bedtime.

So, after doing some cleaning up in my room, I got some more stuff together to bring back up to Fairfax - CDs, clothes, books, etc.  That whole process took a bit longer than I expected.  I didn't end up leaving Richmond until shortly past Noon.

As I was leaving the apartment, I wrote a note to my roomie that I would be coming back Sunday night.  Well, then it hit me that tomorrow night will be Sunday night, so...  At least I'm all "packed" for next week already.  ;)  -Which also means more time for baking on Monday! :)

I didn't make the rounds before leaving Richmond like I was thinking I would last night, but since I'll be back tomorrow... I'm sure I can squeeze in a few visits on Monday and Tuesday morning.

The drive back up was very nice.  Cold outside, but the car was warm.  Slightly cloudy, but very sunny.  And not too many cars on the road.  -And it was nice to hear the opening of today's Met Broadcast on the radio, Katya Kabanova (sp?), by Janacek.  -Although, an opera about a woman oppressed by her family and society kind of struck me as interesting programming for Christmas Day.  :-\

Once I got to the house, I put everything away including the ham I brought up with me.  Of course, as I was putting away the ham, I noticed another Honey-Baked Ham in the fridge.  Apparently, one of my uncle's came by yesterday and dropped it off.  So, I guess we'll be having my ham for New Year's then. ;)  I also brought up the requisite cans for green bean casserole - I just have a craving for it - as well as some bread and another Chocolate Fudge Pecan pie.

My Dad has been spending today just as he does most Christmas days: watching football.  My Mom had to work at the nursing home today, but she'll be home shortly.  And then I'm guessing my brothers and the nieces and nephew will be heading over sometime tonight to open their presents.

As for myself, I'm just gonna take it easy for the next few hours before I start prepping dinner.

-Oh, do they no longer make the Cranberry Ginger Ale?  All I see lately is the Raspberry stuff.  -Which sort of tastes the same, but I like the extra bit of tartness in the Cranberry stuff.

-Just wonderin'....

;)

I've opened my giftees - some lovely thingees this year, including two DVDs I didn't have (amazing) - two Sherlock Holmes films written by our very own Pogue.  I also received a strange-looking CD which, when I figure out exactly what it is, I'll tell you all about.  Also, got a lovely soft plush throw.  That's what it's called - I assume I throw it on the floor somewhere, which will be wonderul in one of the bathrooms, where the tiles are mighty cold in the mornings.  I also got a wonderful framed gift of two count them two authentic Li'l Aner Cream of Wheat ads - I'll have to find the perfect wall although I think I know where it will look great if it fits.  I also got a book of photographs taken by Mr. Harold Lloyd.  Not just any photographs, however - no, these are photographs of NAKED WOMEN.  Not just any photographs of NAKED WOMEN, however - no, these are photographs of NAKED WOMEN in 3-D.  These zaftig babes come right off the page, I tell you.  And yes, Virginia, the book comes with a special pair.  Not just any special pair, however - no, this book comes with a special pair of Harold Lloyd 3-D glasses.  When you put on this special pair of Harold Lloyd 3-D glasses then many a special pair are, shall we say, in your face.

Hmmm... I just went through the ads for tomorrow's After Christmas sales.  Lo and behold, a bunch of store are opening at 7:00AM - on a Sunday.  However, most of them are closing at 7:00PM, so it's not really that long a shopping day, I guess...

In any case, as I was browsing the various sales and specials, all I could think of doing tomorow is NOT going shopping...

<putting hand to forehead>

Hmm... I'm not running a fever.  I guess nothing's wrong with me then.

My friend Rodney this morning at his breakfast gave me a MARY POPPINS program from the just-opened British stage version which he saw last week and a copy of I, ROBOT on DVD. I gave myself a new leather jacket which is thicker than the old one I had. Several other gifts await. I'm off to another dinner in half an hour.

Merry Christmas, fellow dear readers. We are having a nice quiet holiday here.

My DS got me a lovely trio of gifts, including a Wallace and Ladmo dvd (only DR Kerry will understand the significance of that.) DR Sandra got me a book that I had read in childhood. She searched ebay for two years to find it, as it has been out of print for 40 years, she said. My sister sent a piece of jewelry which belonged to my mother. My DH and I will order our special joint gift next week: a new roof for the house.

The ham is baking and we will make a traditional (although not in my family) holiday dish: green bean casserole.

On the Record On the Road

Some time ago, Walt Disney Theatricals had announced a musical revue of its classic Disney songs to be directed by Tina Landau, who helmed the Broadway revival of the musical classic Bells are Ringing. When that revue project faded into obscurity, just as Michael Eisner was facing scrutiny after the departure of Roy Disney and Stanley Gold from the Board of Directors, On the Record was announced as a future project to tour the country.

On the Record was conceived by Broadway director and choreographer Robert Longbottom, who did a fine job re-conceiving a troubled Scarlet Pimpernel and was also nominated for a Tony for his choreography in the recent Flower Drum Song revival, which he also directed. He is still probably best known, however, for the direction and choreography of his first Broadway project, the cult musical Side Show. For On the Record, he again takes the reigns as director and choreographer.

First of all, there is no doubt that On the Record was conceived as an easy way for Disney to make money. The show utilizes classic Disney songs in a show with one set, eight performers, a pre-recorded voice, seventeen costume changes, and only a whiff of a story-in other words, it couldn’t have been too expensive to produce. It is clearly intended to making a killing on the road from people who will pay up to $65 to hear classic Disney songs in a touring Broadway venue.

The basic structure of the show is that eight people have been gathered in a recording studio to record classic Disney songs. Advertising for the show is deceptive in its claims to be about “a young unknown . . . about to get her big break, a pop diva . . . about to meet her match, and a matinee idol . . . about to meet the new kid who could take his place.” Other than a Recording Engineer (a pre-recorded voice off stage) who instructs the performers about some of the sessions, there is no dialogue to develop any of these ideas. The young unknown getting her big break is merely conveyed by a line or two spoken by the Recording Engineer which prompts the young unknown to break out into A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes. The rest of the plot as outlined in advertising is compacted into about four minutes of stage time, communicated through non-verbal gestures and attitudes. Moments into the play, the Recording Engineer instructs the performers to leave their baggage (both physical and personal) at the door, and at the door remains any sense of character and plot until the very end (with the exception of the pop diva using the line “bigger and stronger too” from You’ve Got a Friend in Me to insult the matinee idol).

Most of the stage time is involved with eight people (our four main “characters”-figures really-and a quartet) singing sixty-four classic Disney songs one-after-the-other and sometimes breaking into dance. Recording studio aside, the real concept seems to have been eight beautiful people with beautiful voices singing great Disney songs beautifully.

As for song selections, there are very few surprises among the choices. Let’s Get Together from The Parent Trap makes an appearance, as does The Walrus and the Carpenter from Alice in Wonderland, Will the Sun Ever Shine Again from Home on the Range, and Minnie’s Yoo Hoo. The majority of selections come from the best-known Disney films, with only The Jungle Book and The AristoCats making a showing among full-length animated features in the films after Sleeping Beauty (1959) and before The Little Mermaid (1989). Most of the songs are presented in a medley format, but they are mostly so well-cut (or at least creatively presented), that the often-annoying medley format is welcome. Of note to Disney fans, not listed in the program is that in one scene of underscoring, The Age of Not Believing can be heard, and several songs not performed in the show can be heard in the exit music.

On the Record finds itself on a fine line between Broadway show and theme park diversion. Oddly enough, it is bookended by the more theme park aspects of the presentation, complete with choreography and vocal arrangements one imagines can be found performed by any number of college students in theme parks across the country. However, when the Broadway roots of its creator kicks into high gear, that’s when the show really shines.

The cast is lead by Broadway star Emily Skinner, who was nominated for a Tony Award for her role as Siamese twin Daisy Hilton in Side Show and also appeared on Broadway in Jekyll and Hyde, The Full Monty, and James Joyce’s The Dead. It’s hard to say whether Skinner is as talented as she is beautiful or is as beautiful as she is talented, but her passionate soprano brings life to the stage in the role of Diane, the supposed diva. The moment when the show first kicks into high gear comes from Skinner, who delivers Someday My Prince Will Come with a sense of mature longing and passion tempered with the operetta style in which the song was original performed. Skinner makes one of Disney’s earliest and best known songs come alive in a way little Snow White could never have understood. It doesn’t take long to see why Skinner is indeed a Broadway star.

Emily Skinner’s presence in On the Record is a true blessing. Skinner is a performer well-known in theatre circles in New York, a true Broadway leading talent. Rarely do stars like Skinner-such as Marin Mazzie, Carolee Carmello, and Adam Pascal-ever make it out on the road, with lead roles usually going to talented no-names or to celebrities with varying degrees of talent. Kudos goes to Disney for giving On the Record a star of Skinner’s name and caliber.

Brian Sutherland plays Julian, the matinee idol. Sutherland, who boasts Broadway credits in shows 1776, Victor/Victoria, The Sound of Music, Cats, and others, is also a welcomed Broadway presence. Blessed with a rich and versatile voice, Sutherland follows Skinner’s amazing Someday My Prince Will Come with another highlight of the show, leading the presentation of one of my favorite Disney songs, Once Upon a Dream, which is, according to my notes, “to die for.”

Ashley Brown portrays Kristen, the young unknown. At first hearing, Brown deceptively comes off as a beautiful soprano like so many others gracing Broadway shows in New York and across the country. However, it is her rendition of Reflection (climaxed with a powerful Broadway belt) that will make you say Christina Agu-who?, and her performance of A Change in Me, from the Broadway Beauty and the Beast, is amazing.

Andrew Samonsky is Nick, the new kid who could take the matinee idol’s place. He gets to lead a fun Brian Setzer-esque rendition of Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat and a heartfelt Out There. One of the most interesting moments in the show is to see Emily Skinner and Brian Sutherland, who split Frollo’s Out There intro between them, singing to Samonsky about how ugly and deformed he is. Samonsky, of course, looks like he just walked out of a Gap advertisement.

Good Evening!

Ham is in the oven.  Something else wrapped in foil is also in the oven - I think "embudito" (sp?), sort of a Filipino-style "roll-up" - ground pork around a filling of some chopped up sausages, chunks of chicken, various vegetables, etc.  -Pretty tasty.  And I have one green bean casserole in the upper oven - although I may go ahead and make a second one... I just have a feeling.  My Mom took out some leftovers from the past few days and she has those warming up on the stove too.

Oh, and she brought some "Parisienne Carrots" back from her nursing home.  They're basically just carrots that have been rounded into nice little balls - I almost thought it was a bowl of cantaloupe scoops.  -There's a term for shaping all the vegetable the same way that I can't seem to recall right now...

Whatever...???

All I do know right now is that I'm getting hungry!

Part two:

The cast is rounded out by a talented and hard-working quartet, performed by Meredith Inglesby, Andy Karl, Tyler Maynard, and Keewa Nurullah. It’s fun to see in the performer’s bios a genuine excitement about the show. Andy Karl’s bio proudly states that he began his Disney career working at two different Disney Stores, while understudy Koh Mochizuki was “imported directly from Broadway’s Aida” and is “pleased as punch to reunite with the mouse for this magical venture to perform these beloved classics as a human and not a utensil.”

There are many other highlights in the show. Emily Skinner and Ashley Brown duet on One Song and I’m Wishing in a beautiful arrangement that also has some new intro lyrics. Brown begins by echoing Skinner on One Song before moving into I’m Wishing, both women ending with a beautiful interpolation of the lyrics. The two leading ladies also have a ton of fun with He’s a Tramp (which is begun in reference to one of the male characters). The two Tarzan songs in the show, Strangers Like Me and You’ll Be in My Heart, are arranged to include all eight voices in the show, resulting in a lush vocal sound. With the harmonizing of voices, the performance hearkens back to Phil Collins’ versions and takes it to another emotional level. Also high on the list of pleasures are Emily Skinner’s heart-tugging Baby Mine, Brian Sutherland’s Belle Note, and the four leads on The Bells of Notre Dame. Most fun is the Act I finale in which several of the studio’s nonsense word songs are mixed and switched around as the cast creates chaos with the sheet music. There is also a multi-language presentation of Be Our Guest that is tons of fun.

What helps to make the show interesting is that for some songs, new lyrics are added, as in the performances of I Wanna Be Like You (a really fun number), The Work Song, I’m Wishing/One Song, and Look Out For Mister Stork. Longbottom also switches gender around in other songs. Sutherland, for examples, sings Jessie’s song When She Loved Me while Emily Skinner sings the Genie’s part in Prince Ali. Arrangements of the music also vary. Some songs are performed in the style they were performed in the movie, while others are arranged for the quartet or for multiple voices, while others maintain the older style harmonies found in the films, such as with The Second Star to the Right. Other songs take on new sounds that are distinct to the era from which the song was written, such as the 40s take on When I Seen an Elephant Fly (complete with fun 40s choreography).

The choreography varies in style throughout the show. There are theme park moments (such as with the finale with The Bare Necessities and A Spoonful of Sugar), even a touch of boy band moves in one moment, but there is also plenty of quality Broadway-worthy movement. Minnie’s Yoo-Hoo gets a fun dance as does Les Poissons and Pink Elephants on Parade (which takes on a great Busby Berkeley moment).

That is not to say that everything works in the show. There are a number of songs that seem performed accurately but disconnected from the subtext of the original intentions, which takes away the emotional pull. Also, there are times when the On the Record rendition of the songs simply cannot live up to the film versions. In addition to this, there is a fair amount of inane stage business early on in the show as cast members are given the unexciting duty of twirling and rotating dummy microphones. Because the focus is really on the vocal performances, there are no strong visual images to remember from the show, only some stunning vocal performances.

On the Record is essentially a great Disney concert traveling under the guise of a touring Broadway show. While there are moments where the song arrangements or performances just don’t reach the originals, there are plenty of other moments when the performers open themselves up and give us their heart in song. When that happens, On the Record is pure musical magic for Disney fans and for those who like great music. If either describes you, you won’t want to miss On the Record, even if the show is overpriced at $65 for top tickets (in comparison to what you get in a touring Broadway show for just $20 more).

For the Disney fan, it provides a charming evening of stage time lead by the monumentally talented Emily Skinner, with many of Disney’s greatest songs presented in new ways. Once the show kicks into high gear with Skinner’s Someday My Prince Will Come, Disney fans will rejoice for the fresh presentation of classic Disney songs. Because these songs are so well known, there is plenty to offer for those who are not Disney fanatics, as, once again, these are very talented people who kick it into high Broadway gear with some of the best-known songs of the previous century.

If On the Record won’t be stopping in your town, then every Disney fan will want the 2-disc recording of the score, which will be recorded in January. There are too many stunning presentations of many of these songs to pass up.

A Note to Parents: On the Record is essentially a show conceived to appeal to older children, teens, and adults. Children of ages three, four, five, and sometimes six are not prepared for a Broadway show, and On the Record was not written for them. Should you choose to take your young ones to see a show at a Broadway theatre or a touring Broadway venue, please take the time to explain to them common theatre etiquette. For example, it is never okay to talk during the show as there are real people around them who have paid lots of money to enjoy a show, and the people on stage are real people who can hear what happens in the audience. If the child coos or gets cranky and cries, then they are probably too young for a theatrical experience because they will only distract everyone around them. Kicking the back of the chair of the person in front of you for a good portion of the first act is also never okay. As one Broadway Belle noted in the book Making It on Broadway, a Broadway show-even if produced by Disney-is not a theme park attraction, and children should remain quiet and in their seats to be respectful of those in the expensive seats around them and the extremely talented people on stage performing their craft.

OH!

And my father dressed up as Santa Claus so he could drop off a present to the family next door.  They have a 10-year old daughter, Emma, and she's been sending my Dad get-well cards. :)

-I had to aid Santa getting into his get-up so he would not pull out some of his stitches...

He'll be donning the red & white again once the grandchildren get here... Let's see if Alyssa screams at Santa again this year. -She's been scared of Jolly Ole St. Nick since she was a two-month old!  Which was sort of funny last year when my brother wanted to get pics of her with Santa at the Mall... It's sort of a sad picture... but in a funny-sad way.  ;)

-Well, at least I know that I am not the only adult she's scared of.

SXGRL tells me that I was wonderful last night and says there are pics to prove it.
Gee, I wonder if SXGRL is talking about the Christmas do?

More likely it's talk about getting done on Christmas Eve!

I think one should always explain presents which may be in doubt in any way whatsover.
For example, the newspaper boy who gifted me with the seven thongs left a note with the package, saying, "These are not slingshots." IMHO this was extremely thoughtful of him and saved me hours of useless attempts at shooting the neighborhood squirrels out of the trees from my balcony.

Yep, she plays the dates throughout the end of this month and then Kaitlin Hopkins takes over - and gets the recording too.

-I'm just wondering why Emily left the show.  I was hoping she would get to play her hometown of Richmond early next year as well as DC.

However, it's nice to see Brian Sutherland getting a nice mention too.  I enjoyed working with him and his wife, Diane Fratantoni(sp?) (now Sutherland) during Guys & Dolls at Arena Stage a few years ago.  -And they went on the subesequent tour too.  They were newlyweds at the time and the played opposite each other as Sky and Sarah.

I just dipped into the gift basket filled with delicious home made peanut brittle that my neighbors brought over yesterday afternoon.

These neighbors are a very nice family.  Peter is a fairly light-skinned African-American and Maria is a very fair Caucasian, with peaches and cream complection and blonde hair.  They have two children (a toddler girl and infant boy) and both of them are as fair as their mom, with flame red hair to boot.  Peter has jokingly said that he's going to get himself a t-shirt that reads "Yes, I Really Am Their Father."

Good Evening!

Well, it's official!  I have eaten too much food!  And I haven't even had dessert yet!?!?!?!  It was one of those meals where it didn't look like a lot of food was on the table, but as everyone started filling up, you could tell there was just enough food on the table.  -With just the right amount left over for leftovers.

I got a picture with my niece, Alyssa.  She was sleeping.  Which means she wasn't crying when I was holding her.  ;)  Someday...

My brother, Don, is picking up his daughter, Alexandra, at the airport right now.  She headed down to Florida with her mom to visit her grandparents.  Thankfully, their flights were not affected by the various weather and computer hassles that have been popping up today.  -Those poor people on Comair stuck in Atlanta - the pics on the news... not good.

Once Alexandra gets here, we'll commence with the opening of the presents.  John Michael has been scouting out the area under the tree, and he's already set aside all of his gifts from Santa.

*OH, John Michael, however, was not fooled by my father dressing up as Santa earlier.  He knew it was "Papa" right off the bat!

OK.. I think I need to loosen my belt and sit on the couch for a while...

PAN AND SCANNED, of course!  And to think, they COULD be showing it in HiDef since they've gone and remastered the thing once more for a dvd release later this year along with anamorphic dvds of THE KING AND I, CAROUSEL and SOUTH PACIFIC.  No word of course on either Jose Ferrer's STATE FAIR or FLOWER DRUM SONG.

Back from Snicket.  Not as bad as everyone is saying, but a bit of a copout ending and quite a bit of gratuitous mugging (what else is new?) from Jim Carrey.  Meryl Streep was great, though, as was Billy Connolly, and the production design, costumes and score (by Thomas Newman) are all excellent.

I am officially going crazy (is this a surprise to anyone?).  The local contemporary Christian station has been playing the most gorgeous jazz-inflected a capella version of Alfred Burt's "Caroling, Caroling" I have ever heard, and I can never get through to them to find out who it is.  I just did an All Music Guide search and it doesn't seem to be any of the ones they have listed.  I love Alfred Burt and did a huge choral arrangement of three of his songs which has been done by several choirs in these parts.  If you're not aware of who he is, he used to send songs each year as his Christmas cards, and several of his tunes have become standards over the years.

I did Amazon, too.  I don't think it's any of the "usual suspects".  I thought it might be Singers Unlimited, but it wasn't their version.  It's very modern, lots of changing time signatures, with a beautiful soprano wordless obligato that keeps rising up out of the lyric.  I will be calling the station nonstop until I finally get someone on the phone!  I am relentless.  :)

TD, yes, see the previous page--I had started with All Music, but, here's the great news:

I FOUND IT!!

I don't want to say that G-d, who obviously has better things to do, helped me find it, but it was a complete surfing stumble that led me to it.  It's evidently a 3 person group (amazing, they must be overdubbed 10 times, which is part of what was misleading me), no longer in existence, called First Call.  Here's a Real Audio version of Caroling, Caroling.  Prepare to be transported:

Merry Christmas Day to All!  Our low-key family festivities have ended and it was a lovely day.  The best thing Santa brought to our house was  the snowplow!  When we went to bed last night our street still had not been cleared, but when I was up at 5am to do some Santa-ing it had been.  "Clear" means that there are now two huge piles of snow on either side of the street and DSRob had to do away with the one at the end of our driveway before we could pick up my 86-year-old mother for our Christmas celebration.

The snowstorm altered our menu plans somewhat when we were not able to get the Honey Baked Ham I'd ordered.  I had a pork roast in the freezer, so that was our main course, accompanied by cheesy potatoes, green beans, and jello salad.  Dessert was peppermint ice cream and a tray of cookies like I took (virtually-speaking) to bk's Christmas Eve do.  BTW, loved the photos DRPanni - thanks for posting them.

Presents:  My husband and son gave me a Crosley 4-in-1 audio player - CD, cassette, radio, and records.  Now I can listen to LP's that I haven't heard in more than 10 years; they even individually wrapped a few of my albums for me to unwrap this morning.  Tomorrow I will bring the entire collection back up from the basement and try to attach the external speakers that I still have from my former stereo.

Some of my other favorite presents were ones I gave - tickets for my DH and myself to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary at the Cincinnati Pops on Jan. 16 (guest artist=Kristen Chenoweth) and tickets for DH, my mom, and myself to see  The Producers on May 1 at the Schuster Center, the new performing arts center in downtown Dayton.  My mom was so excited seeing the I Wanna be a Producer number on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade broadcast - that told me exactly what to get her for Christmas.

It's been a busy few days with all the holiday preparations and the snowstorm, so I'm looking forward to a week of relaxation.

Sorry for another quick check in, but I am really tired and will be going to bed early. Some of my favorite Christmas presents were Sweeney Todd On DVD (The one released in April), Broadway: The American Musical, and Meet Me in St. Louis. I may get a cast recording or two with my leftover Christmas money.  I am having trouble deciding between Last Five Years, Parade, and Elegies.

Good evening all!

Well I am back from my day of driving around the state.  I started this morning in a rather dubious way...I fell out of bed.  I woke with quite a start at about 6 am, so it was still dark.  I reached over to turn on the bedside lamp, and I must have reached with a bit too much enthusiasum, because the next thing I knew, I was tumbling down onto the hardwood floor.  Most of me was unhurt, but I really banged my face on the wooden table that serves as a nightstand, so now I have a rather pretty little bruise on my right cheek and the bone underneath is rather sore.

But I recovered, and we headed over the rainy mountains to see my sister, then on to my uncle's for dinner.  It was good to see my family, although I worry about my cousin.  She's almost exactly my age...born two weeks after me, but she's been battling certain psychological problems almost her whole life...doing better now, but still has major issues with self image.

Presents-wise, it was a light year for me.  The biggest gift I got was from my employers, about $180 in gift cards to various stores.  My parents bought me the DVD of the Broadway special that aired on PBS a few months ago.  A nice gift, to be sure.  And that was it, present-wise.

Now I am relaxing, watching White Christmas, and thinking about a light dinner...

I am home from from my friends home where I spent a quiet christmas. Received some from wonderful gifts. I received the dvds of Mary Poppins 40th Anniversary edition, The Princess Diaries 2, Season 1 of The Golden Girls. As a stocking stuffer there was a public domain 1935 version of A Christmas Carol called Scrooge with Seymour Hicks. It is the edited American version. I also received two over size coffee table books.  The 101 Greatest Broadway Musicals and the History Of The Academy Awards (The one with the envelop on the cover.) It was a very nice day.

Presents...hmm...everything is in a big bag, but I do recall that I got two DVDs...one of MR. AND MRS. NORTH TV shows that I don't think I have seen yet,  and with episodes of THE BETTY WHITE SHOW...which, if you have never seen this sitcom, is about the same as getting a lump of coal! LOL!

Oh, the most enjoyable part about today is that I spent a lot of time with my grand-neice Taylor, who just adores her Uncle Mike!! We watched some Gumby short subjects read many, many books together!!! But the most fantastic thing, I thought, was that when I flipped on the TV to see if there were any Christmas specials on I happened to stop for a moment on PBS and they were showing a ballet of THE NUTCRACKER!

Well, Taylor couldn't take her eyes off of it! She is only 2 and 1/2 years old but she was absolutely fascinated by this ballet and we ended up watching the whole thing together!!!

Then she wanted to watch it again...I had to try and explain that it wasn't a DVD and we could not watch it again...but she didn't quite understand! LOL!

Good Evening!

-I'm still full!  Although, I did somehow manage to finish off a small piece of the chocolate fudge pecan pie along with a small scoop of ice cream.

 :-X

As for the rest of the gift-giving this evening, my brother, Don, gave me - and my other brothers - a shaving set, that new Gillette disposable that "micro-pulses" for a closer shave, plus an envelope with some cash in it.

And much to the surprise of me and my brothers, our parents gave us sweaters this year - nice ones too! - instead of the usual Gold Toe 5-pack we usually get.  ;)

My brother, Don, and his daughter, Alexandra, ended up spending the night at their house since Alexandra's flight was delayed and she was very sleepy when she and her mother got the plane.  -She went to Disneyworld yesterday!  They'll be coming back over tomorrow, and we'll have another Christmas for Alexandra - who also just had her birthday.  She was born during the real bad ice storm we had a few years ago on Christmas Eve.  -We had her "birthday" a few months ago, but there's always a relative or two (cough, cough) who still gives her a proper birthday present on her proper birthday.

All in all a very good day.  I managed to stick with "The Sound of Music" even though it had the look of a colorized b&w movie, and ABC had those interminable commercial breaks where they were promoting their January line-up - which included some very un-family-friendly fare.  Ah, well...

My parents are already in bed, and I'm most likely gonna hit the sack in a few myself.  But until then...

The mysterious CD is entitled The Babes: Beyond Bitchin' - the cover is a parody of an early Beatles album (Beatles '64, I think).  I'm going to play it on the way to St. Nick's (Redman, that is).

These Babes are "The Four Bitchin' Babes."  They've performed here in Olympia a couple of times and are wonderful, in my humble opinion (IMHO in Internet lingo)!  I have the Beyond Bitchin' CD.  My favorite song is "Italy and France"...it's a very beautiful song.  "Gabby Road" is the other CD of their that I own.  That cover shows them walking across the street (also like The Beatles) but they're all talking on cell phones and no one's barefoot.  They write almost all of their own music.  Highly recommended!

Yes, DRJOSE I just checked the SOUND OF MUSIC - I think since we are used to DVD quality - this p/s print is almost unbearable.  I don't have the heart to watch to see if it is the version that doesn't cut much dialog - but makes cuts in SONGS!!

The last time that I watched "The Sound of Music" on TV was quite a few years ago.  Julie was singing "I Have Confidence" and came to the part near the end of the song:

It can be
All I trust I leave my heart to
All I trust becomes my own
I have confidence in confidence alone...

(spoken) Oh, help.
(sung) I have confidence in confidence alone,
Besides, which you see, I have confidence in me!

Anyway, they got to the spoken part:

It can be
All I trust I leave my heart to
All I trust becomes my own
I have confidence in confidence alone...

(spoken) Oh, help....

"And we'll be right back to The Sound of Music after these commecial messages."

:o THEY DIDN'T FINISH THE SONG!  I was livid!  I turned off the TV (I was so mad I didn't even change the channel) and I vowed right then and there that I would NEVER watch The Sound of Music on TV again.  And I haven't.  I won't even watch the commercials for it. :P

I'm back, and to prove it, I'm here.  I had a lovely time with the Redmans.  We ate a nice meal, opened our giftees (I got three books and a CD), and Nick wanted to watch What If for their Christmas viewing, so we did.

Hisaka: I think we discussed Fellini during our visit.  My favorite Fellinis are The White Sheik (the BEST!), La Strada, Variety Lights (mentioned in Writer's Block), Nights of Cabiria, La Dolce Vita and 8 1/2.

I've listened to almost all of the Bitchin' Babes and they are quite good.  I think the CD is almost a textbook example of weak sequencing, because the first three tracks are way too similar and I was ready to give up.  But, then came the HMO song and they had me.  In fact, I'm going to recommend that song to a singer I know, to put it on her new album, should her new album actually ever become a reality.

I am having trouble deciding between Last Five Years, Parade, and Elegies.

I know you didn't ask my advice, but here it comes anyway.  If you can only pick one, pick Elegies.

I noticed this too and I think they do it is because they all write songs and sing lead on their own songs.  For the most part, they get the same number of songs on each recording and they record them in the same order.  For instance on the "Beyond Bitchin'" CD:  Debi's song is first, then Sally's song, then Megon's song and then Camille's song.  Then another four in the same order...then another four in the same order.  And if they sing songs written by others (there are two on this CD), their singing order is still the same.  Debi's the lead, Sally's the lead, Megon's the lead and Camille's the lead.

The Four Bitchin' Babes have been around for a quite a few years.  And it's not always been the same four.  Julie Gold used to tour as one of the Babes, as did Christine Lavin.  -Christine Lavin's songbook is a wonderful source for cabaret material.  They make a visit or two to the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA, each year.  And there were at least two Bitchin' Babes songbooks published.  Cherry Lane (Hal Leonard) I believe was/is the publisher.

When I got home from the breakfast, I watched another episode of STAR TREK from Season 2 - "Obsession." Amazing how beautiful these old shows look now on DVD. The color is so very rich. Used to look so pastel on our old Admiral color TV 40 years ago.
Ah, yes, back in the good ol' days, when you knew a crewman was going to die if he was wearing a pink shirt.

I don't know from Elegies, but, of course, we recommend purchasing recordings from all labels via amazon.com, cduniverse.com, deepdiscountcd.com or eBay.

Didn't NBC own the broadcast rights for a while?  I don't seem to recall it being on ABC before like it was tonight.
???

Well, I believe tonight they showed the whole movie.  However... And I'll need to check my DVD back in Richmond...

I could have sworn they did some tweaking during the Mother Abbess and Maria scene which contains the now infamous line:  "What is it that you can't face?"  -With "can't" sounding almost like another word due to the accent.  Well... The scene started, and when it got to that line, I could have sworn the vocal had been tweaked.  The "a" in "can't" sounded modified, almost American, like the "a" in "bad", instead of like the first "a" in "American". ;)  -And it also looked liked they edited the film there too - I could have sworn the camera is on the Mother Abbess' face when she says that line, but tonight it was just on her dimly lit profile.  Hmm...

*Oh, and while watching "Welcome to Woop-Woop" the other night on latenight cable, there's a whole celebration/ritual that takes place in the movie when the residents of Woop-Woop hear the line, "What is it you can't face?".  Lots of hooting and hollering.

;)

Christmas itself went very well for us.  We took a carload of presents to the grandlads (and a couple to their parents), all of which received the "Ah, Neat!" accolade.  It was a year for lots of remote-controled vehicles, and a remote-controled robot as well.

We feasted on the daughter's rib roast, which was served with baked potatoes, mac and cheese, green beans, cole slaw, and an interesting variation on creamed onions.  These onions, prepared by der B's ex-wife, were made with cocktail onions, the kind that have been pickled in a vinagery brine.  The combination of the pickling and creaming was ... most unusual.

Der B and I earlier had believed that another group would be charging into the house after dinner, for more merriment, but the plans were changed without our being told and we were told instead not to leave.  There were no fights, few raised voices, and everything went quite well, but it still took us quite a while to finally be able to take our leave, and then the long drive home (complete with rehash of the evening).

All and all, a merry Christmas, after all.

Elegies, of the three, Elegies.

A serious trim also came in the EDELWEISS sequence in the living room....all of the children's reaction shots (including Angela Carwright's) were cut, and the song ended after the first verse...."bless my homeland forever....."  And yes the cuts were always followed by a commercial, almost before you missed what you didn't see....but not quite.  I think there was also an edit or two in the cemetery.....

LOL DRJoSE introduced me to WELCOME TO WOOP WOOP more than a year ago.  It is a very funny movie AND a great soundtrack!  And DRJOSE, I think your memory about the "can't face" scene is correct, but I too will have to check my DVD.

...The local contemporary Christian station has been playing the most gorgeous jazz-inflected a capella version of Alfred Burt's "Caroling, Caroling" I have ever heard, and I can never get through to them to find out who it is. ...
It's probably one of those computer-run stations, so no one has to be running the store.  Or, to put it another way, a case of "G*d in the Machine."

...I may get a cast recording or two with my leftover Christmas money.  I am having trouble deciding between Last Five Years, Parade, and Elegies.
I'd go for Parade myself.
