Well, you've read the notes, the notes were an early draft, and now it is time for you to post until the early cows come home.

I went to bed at 7:30 last night.  When I got back from the colonoscopy, I couldn't sleep.  I was instructed in my dismissal sheet to stay off aspirin or Advil for a week, so I can do nothing about the leg pains, and I had endless attacks of gas.  By 6:00 I could barely stay awake.

I wanted to attend a 100th birthday celebration for The Drama Book Shop yesterday, and I was showered, dressed, and ready to go by 4:30, but I finally decided I was not up for a party and phoned my regrets.

DR JRand66, I was unconscious.  I remember Dr. Sanchez telling me he was inserting the anesthesia into my IV and then I was in recovery.

I did get a referral yesterday for another knee injection, so I'll call today and book an appointment.  I liked the doctor I saw in March, only he's no longer taking patients from my HMO.  He seems to have been one of the doctors, like my physical therapist, burnt in that insurance payments problem from last April when my HMO changed management.

DR Laura, I ordered the toy last night and I hope it works.  I worry that she's not getting enough exercise.  Last night she found a new place to curl up in for several hours: the bathtub.

DR Elmore, they're as finicky about toys as they are about food.  And when you find something they love, they'll eventually tire of that, too.  Try crumpling up a piece of paper (they love the sound of that) into a little ball and toss that for her.

Ours are older, of course, so they're less excited about toys.  But they still love the toy basket and often one of them will curl up on the toys to sleep.  Then once in a while, they'll suddenly "discover" a particular toy and it'll get batted around the house for a day or two.

My first crush?

Ann Sheridan...Dorothy Malone

My first real crush turned into a brief affair when I was 20.

It did not end well.

Almost forgot to say:  catnip!

Kittens don't react to it, but she should be old enough to start liking it.  If you didn't already, get her a catnip-filled mouse or other soft thing and see if she's attracted to it.  Keep a few extras sealed up.

My neighbor Judy brought her some catnip toys that she makes, and Annabelle cared less.

I had to leave my office as the air conditioner was blowing full blast on me.  The heating/air guy is here cleaning & checking it all out.  He is doing the air first as the unit is outside and it might rain soon, then he will turn the heat on and warm us up again.  If Keith was here I would go for a walk to warm up.

Annabelle is asserting her likes and dislikes in the menu I'm offering her.  She eats dry food on occasion but she prefers Frisky Feast beef and gravy.  Their seafood combo is okay, but she hates their tuna.  Last night I purchased more beef and a few other dlavors to see what else appeals to her.

I hope you're keeping a list.  My cat wasn't too picky, so I could just get her the case of Friskies cat food from Costco, but she didn't like the Fancy Feast shredded versions. :P

Back from the morning meeting - despite two hours of sleep it's been a great morning.  I believe my preferred sound designer is on board for Levi, so that's great.  But the best news is the important project is a go and I'm fast tracking the HELL out of it.  Writing liner notes today but the booklet is complicated so we're figuring out how to do all that.  So, would you all like to know what it is?

A week ago I heard from the Levi Strauss company who were - oh - disturbed by our logo.  So I responded with a really good e-mail and then we heard nothing for over a week so I assumed they were okay with it - but today I got another saying they want us to remove the red bat-wing design behind the title - that's trademarked and they simply don't grant use of it to anyone.  I think we're okay with our font - it's actually slightly different than theirs and I don't think you can trademark a font.  What they do have trademarked is Levi's - and we don't have that wording or punctuation obviously and if I read the e-mail correctly he's okay with that.  So I'm just trying to get clarification about the jeans pocket - again they don't own a trademark on a jeans pocket so I'm sure that's fine.  So, once I speak to him or he e-mails me we'll make the change and I'll have to get it right up on Indiegogo, which should update any shares I did on Facebook - and we'll swap it out on the Facebook Levi! page.  And I invited him or anyone from he company to come see it as our guest - because I think they would love it.  But there were no threats or anything - all very cordial and friendly so that was nice.

So, the important (to me) project - as most of you know, I have written MANY, MANY times about how much I love Robert Ward's opera of The Crucible.  It was a life-changer for me, musically.  When we formed Bay Cities and got all the Ward music for our first release, I was disappointed to find that The Crucible had been licensed the year before.  I was even more disappointed when I bought it - the sound was horrible - just bad mastering at way too low a level and completely dead sounding and muffled.  I could barely listen to it, frankly.  A decade later, they repackaged it in a thinner case with yet another unattractive cover and the same master.  The fact is, I was baffled how they were able to keep selling it as I know what the licenses were because it was the same company as our Ward material.

So, the opera has been on my mind for some reason for most of this year.  And the same label that continues to this day, thirty years later, to sell it, also issued another recording of a college opera production - I bought it, of course, but I didn't like the recording and the cast of students, while certainly competent, can't touch the original cast.  So a couple of weeks ago I began to search to see who owned CRI records now - and found that New World Records bought that entire catalog.  So, I went on their site and they sell titles from the CRI catalog, but only stuff that's never been issued before, and ONLY downloads or CD-Rs.  So, just for grins I sent a note telling the history of my love for the opera, our releases on Bay Cities from the CRI catalog, etc.  The next day I got a response and it was a wonderful one, saying she was happy to license to me.

I asked her about the other label, and it transpires that the paperwork is vague but she was fine to do the license anyway - a short run of 500 despite that the other label continues to sell theirs - I don't care, frankly.  She told me I had to contact the publisher of the music.  So, I wrote them on a form on their website once again explaining my love of the opera and that I knew I had to do the mechanical with them.  I got a response the next morning saying they  could do that license as long as New World was on board - so I told him the number of units and that New World was absolutely on board.  Until that e-mail from the publisher we just didn't know which way this was going to go.  So, this morning I got an e-mail from the publisher who is giving this to us gratis - no mechanical - which is fantastic.  And more fantastically, New World is giving it to us for free as well - amazing.  The reason for that is that I told them that I didn't need digital rights at all, just CD - so she asked if I'd be willing to share our new master with her and that way they'd make it available digitally and I said absolutely.  And there you have it.  But I'd already sent the tracks to my mastering guy who evaluated them and felt as I did - ridiculous mastering.  So he sent me a sample track with his new mastering and it blew me away - all the power and beauty were back, all the warmth and air and punch - it was just as I remembered the original LP although I'm sure this is even better than that, memory being what it is.  Yesterday I got the rest and listened straight through and it's just magnificent.  I don't expect we'll sell all that many but who knows - and I just don't care with this one because it is so full circle for me - hearing it late in 1962 at 14 years of age and falling in love with it, and here we are fifty-five years later and I'm issuing it on a much-improved CD with great packaging.

I spent the day writing the liner notes, which are VERY personal - I know that will peeve the "I want a musicologist's reading of every word and note in the score, which of course I loathe - but there's an entire book about the opera so I refer them to that.  So, it's my notes, a few photographs, a personal and sweet note from Ward to me, and a very detailed synopsis of the opera.  I'm not going to go to the expense of including the entire libretto because the booklet would be way too thick and unwieldy - so I've asked the publisher if they'd be okay if we put the libretto on our site but make it viewable but not downloadable.   We'll see how that goes but I am over the moon about this.  We'll be announcing it maybe early next week.

Chemo was fine today....I am now wearing my pump until Thursday.  When that is removed I will be 2/3rds of the way done with the treatment.  Doctor said that one month after that, I will have a scan and a couple of other tests...and if those are good, I will be cleared for six months.

That is wonderful news!!!

I was wondering about that, but it's great that they're not just starting with a cease-and-desist and then negotiating.

ChasSmith, yes The Crucible is vivid stereo - even when I bought it back in 1962 I got a stereo copy.  And just two weeks ago I bought for twelve bucks a sealed stereo copy on eBay, whose cover is the only pristine cover I've seen since - it's almost all black so it scuffs and wears really easily.  But this had its shrink wrap and so the cover was minty fresh and brand new.  I had it scanned tonight and it will be the back of the booklet.

Yes, I wrote them the entire history of the show - a really good e-mail.  There was nothing adversarial in either of their e-mails so no one had to get upset.  I also invited them to come down and see the show - so they know what it is and that's a loving tribute to their founder.  I'm pretty sure this guy's job is to sit at his computer all day and search for infringements.  He knows what we're doing - we're not a rival company - he gets it.

Today I went to a new eatery near me. I had the impression from their website that they had lots of prepared dishes to take out and homemade soups. I love soup! The place is larger than I imagined and the menu more extensive. They only had two soups today--neither of interest.  I tried their house salad: arugula and baby romaine, red quinoa, lots of pecans, some candied pecans, dried cranberries, and green apple with balsamic dressing. It was quite good! NOT cheap, but a substantial portion. I'll return. Maybe I'll have gotten over the sticker shock by then.

Sat on my couch like so much fish and listened to an SACD of Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain - this one from Mobile Fidelity.  I had two other SACDs of this, both horrible in completely different ways - a travesty that should not be allowed, but which is proof that just because it's SACD doesn't mean it's good.  My Japanese mini-LP CD sounded better than either of those.  So, third time's the charm and the Mobile Fidelity is spectacular and puts all regular CD releases of this title to shame.  THIS is how to do an SACD.
