Title: THE DAY OF THE ROBBYS
Post by: bk on February 26, 2018, 12:02:24 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written the day of the Robbys, and now it is time for you to post until the day of the cows cows come home.

Well, I didn't get to reply to yesterday's posts, but what I usually do is right-click on the Quote link, then select "Open link in a new tab," and leave the tab up until I've read through all of the posts, then I go through and post my replies and responses.  Fortunately, I still have those tabs, so I'll be posting from yesterday's quotes. :)

To answer from yesterday:  Tom, I like El Sarape (http://www.elsarape.net/)'s food. :)

I just realized that I didn't read your question correctly.  To answer:  El Sarape has terrible Chinese food...but their Mexican is pretty good.

;)

I so love that even in the very rare case that DR George says something negative, he still ends the sentence with something good to say.

I wish I could think of doing that more often

Fred, I took Tom's original post from the night before, asking "Does El Sarape have good Chinese food?" as a joke.  It's a local PNW chain Mexican restaurant and doesn't serve ANY Chinese food! :))

I love the Eileen Rodgers/Hal Linden ANYTHING GOES!  That's to recording that made me really fall in love with "Heaven Hop" by Margery Gray.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XHcWn4nBUA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XHcWn4nBUA)

This was the first cast recording of ANYTHING GOES that I ever heard and I also love it.  What I love most about this verson of the show (if I remember correctly) is that it's the only version where Reno sings I Get a Kick Out of You (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El5xM2SFmCE) in reference to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (after they've gotten to know each other a bit), instead of at the beginning of the show about Billy, which to me makes absolutely no sense.  They're friends, buddies, pals...she shouldn't have any kind of unrequited romantic feelings for Billy.  That's never explored at any other time in the show.  She meets Evelyn and is smitten with him.  What's the point of having a moment of her confessing her love for Billy if it doesn't go anywhere?  Just my 2¢.

This recording is the one I grew up with.  I love the entire cast and Margery Gray is so wonderful.  I find the "Mary Martin Sings all of ANYTHING GOES" an effort, and I wish I liked the Beaumont version more.  I really hated a lot of the original Lincoln Center production.  I mostly play the John McGlinn-EMI recording.  It's poorly cast and John has no sense of dramatic drive, but those original 1934 orchestratons and score remain my faves.

I love Kim Criswell!  I hope she's not included in your "It's poorly cast" statement. ???

Ate about 800 calories of Taco Bell.  And I've now written a bit more than two-thirds of the commentary.  Interestingly, I could not find one piece of historical information about Hit Me With a Hot Note and Watch Me Bounce, which is very unusual - if anyone knows the history of the song, send it my way.

I love "Hit Me With a Hot Note and Watch Me Bounce."  I hope you find the information you need.

Talked with Mom tonight. Louisville is having one of its worst flooding in ages. Thankfully, the house is dry at the moment. No water in the basement. But water is everywhere else. And I think the garage may be flooded. That's not really a problem as there isn't a car or much of anything else except for some tools and stuff that they refuse to get rid of.

~~~Stay Dry Vibes of All Kinds for John's Mom!!~~~
The story I heard is that Porter knew the worth of the song and wanted it first so that people would show up to the theater on time and not be noisy during one of the show’s hits. Apparently there was a lot of bad behavior among the rich theatergoers at the time who didn’t care about the show, only to be seen.
I was listening to McGlinn's Babes In Toyland on Youtube. Where did that person get the recording and wondering if it's properly mixed? It was hard for me to tell. Was there anything missing from what was recorded? There are notes and the lyrics so someone made an effort to put it out there.
Is this the one listed by "Sir Parsifal"?  I have no idea who this person may be but he's in violation of copyright since the recording belongs to the Packard Humanities Institute.  There have been bootleg copies since 2001, some distributed by McGlinn's agent at the time, selling online.
Cats let me sleep late again today.  This nice little run isn't going to last, I know that.  But the housemates have been away (they're loving their little vacation in Savannah) so no one's getting up at the usual earliest hours and getting them going as a result.  One more day of grace, probably, then I'm sure things will be back to normal on Wednesday.
Annabelle wanted to step out  with me when I tossed the litter, so I let her.  I could hear a lot of noise coming from above with the elevator crew.  she ran up to the fourth floor and I followed.  I found her at the door to 4C, trying to get in.  Just then the elevator doors opened and there were 3-5 elevator men in eye protection goggles and hard hats wuth welding equipment, grinders, solders, whatever, with sparks and loud grinding noises flying everywhere.
She went to pieces, desperately trying to get into 4C, throwing herself at the door.  I picked her up and she climbed out of my grasp to the top of my shoulders.  As soon as they finished on four, the doors closed, and I headed for the stairs.  When we reached the third floor, I could hear the doors open on three and there was more of the same.  She panicked again.  As soon as the doors closed, I carried her inside.
Monday morning greetings!  I'm kind of like Annabelle today - I want to go out.  I haven't ventured out much alone since being panhandled inside a bookstore several weeks ago.  Seems to be a lot of shady behavior being reported in shopping centers, especially those near major highways.  Anyway, today I'm going to the post office in Franklin and a branch library in the Dayton 'burbs.  I may get real brave and visit a new Starbucks along the way.
I hope my excursion isn't as terrifying as Annabelle's...
Jane, "can" do this, or that I do it this way at all?  Do you read HHW on a tablet or a desktop computer?  The way I do it on my tablet is I hold down the "Quote" button and a dialog box opens up and I can select "Open in a new tab" that way.  If you have an iPad or other Apple device, I have no idea how those work.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XHcWn4nBUA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XHcWn4nBUA)
This was the first cast recording of ANYTHING GOES that I ever heard and I also love it.  What I love most about this verson of the show (if I remember correctly) is that it's the only version where Reno sings I Get a Kick Out of You (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=El5xM2SFmCE) in reference to Lord Evelyn Oakleigh (after they've gotten to know each other a bit), instead of at the beginning of the show about Billy, which to me makes absolutely no sense.  They're friends, buddies, pals...she shouldn't have any kind of unrequited romantic feelings for Billy.  That's never explored at any other time in the show.  She meets Evelyn and is smitten with him.  What's the point of having a moment of her confessing her love for Billy if it doesn't go anywhere?  Just my 2¢.
The story I heard is that Porter knew the worth of the song and wanted it first so that people would show up to the theater on time and not be noisy during one of the show’s hits. Apparently there was a lot of bad behavior among the rich theatergoers at the time who didn’t care about the show, only to be seen.
That makes sense...for back then, but now, why not use it where it's most effective for the story?  Just a thought.
There was a reprise in Act Two.  I have the original 1934 score.
I always wonder if the original, original script (if I remember correctly) with the ship wreck plot that was rewritten when at the time a ship really did wreck, still exists and what it might've been like.
Congrats on the return front, Larry!  I should get my refund on Wednesday!
My accountant recently lost his cat to the same heart disease as Thatch.  The cat was four years old, the same age as the only other cat I know of to die from this problem.  I am not setting my calendar for Thatch to die in 2022, but I will certainly begin worrying more about his health, if I'm still alive, in 2021.
That's so sad. :(
Well, I didn't get to reply to yesterday's posts, but what I usually do is right-click on the Quote link, then select "Open link in a new tab," and leave the tab up until I've read through all of the posts, then I go through and post my replies and responses.  Fortunately, I still have those tabs, so I'll be posting from yesterday's quotes. :)
I am baffled by the fact you can do this.
Jane, "can" do this, or that I do it this way at all?  Do you read HHW on a tablet or a desktop computer?  The way I do it on my tablet is I hold down the "Quote" button and a dialog box opens up and I can select "Open in a new tab" that way.  If you have an iPad or other Apple device, I have no idea how those work.
Yes, but you did it the day after when the quote option is gone-right?
I was able to post in a new day after the quote option is gone, but I can't create the post from a quote after BK locks the day.  I opened the tabs (right-click on "Quote") when it was still available to do so, and I had those tabs still open in my browser when BK closed the day, so the information was still there for me to copy into a new post on the new day.  If I tried to preview or post, I got the message that the day is locked, so I try to avoid that (but I can still hit the back button on my browser and see my post as if I were able to still post it).  Since it's all the correct quoting information, it still works when I paste it all into a new message the next day.  Make sense??
Season 2 of Victoria ended on Christmas Eve, 1846, and it was quite a wonderful episode: Family! can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.  I don't always care much for the show's musical scoring, but I loved how the composer used "The Coventry Carol" in the underscoring of the winter scenes.
I cannot wait for Season 3!
Last Thursday I was given two referrals, one for acupuncture and one for an ophthalmologist. I'm having a lot of problems from a secondary cataract and need it seen to quickly. There were problems with both referrals. I spent most of Friday afternoon and again much of today trying to sort it all out. I was getting different stories from different people, and I don't think the vision center I was referred to even treats cataracts. I don't know for sure, of course, because the person who answered the phone couldn't tell me exactly what they do treat. Quite maddening. This morning, though, I phoned the insurance company and a nice, well-informed woman was able to answer many of my questions.
The only thing I didn't like was, after asking for my DOB, her comment that her mother and I have birthdays a week apart (same year).   :P  ;)
Apparently, when the referral coordinator asks for an ophthalmologist the computer gives her any ole ophthalmologist, without checking specifics. It is down to the patient to check into that doctor's specialties to know if he/she even treats your condition! Otherwise, you're given an appointment with someone who may not be able to help. I think I finally found someone and obtained a new referral, but I spent many hours getting to this point. I don't have an appointment yet, though.
Elmore, have you seen the miniseries based on Gaskell's North & South? It's from 2004. Netflix is running it. I don't know whether to invest the time. I haven't read the novel yet.
I forgot to tell Elmore that I'm pleased about his good tax news. I know many people are nervous over how they'll do under the new tax law.
At first I thought that was a rapper. Of course, our own TCB may be a rapper.
DR JOHN G I liked the movie version of THE GROUP....some real standouts among the actresses but especially Jessica Walter, Kathleen Widdoes, and Joanna Pettet - but they are all good.
The men are such cads and nearly impossible to take....the characters not the actors - although the roles are pretty thankless.
I read about 1/3 of the book before giving up.....Candace Bergen is beautiful.
Birding was rather unremarkable today, although we did go to a new spot. We drove around some farmland, which had miles of broccoli plants.
I had planned on reading one of her novels.  After watching North & South, Cranford, and Wives & Daughters, all of which I thought were wonderful I decided to pass on the books.
BK, how did the Robby Awards go?
Title: Re: THE DAY OF THE ROBBYS
Post by: bk on February 26, 2018, 11:20:33 PM
Back from what surely will go down in history as one of the best Robby Awards.  It was just the right number of songs and performers/presenters.  My co-host and I did well - it was a very friendly and irreverent crowd and they loved my irreverent humor, especially about Rob himself and other LA awards shows.  Patter could not have worked better. The only thing I actually planned was my opening remarks - that all went swimmingly, but it was the off-the-cuff stuff that I frequently thought of just before I went back onstage that was the funniest stuff of the evening.  Co-host did well but needs to have some timing lessons in terms of vocal pace - but we were a good duo, I think.  When this has been done with other hosts the shows have run over three hours because they usually make it all about them - I'm not that guy so we really kept things moving and we came in as the shortest Robbys in history - two hours and ten minutes.  Levi and the Kritzerland shows were, as I knew they would be, non-winners.  As soon as I saw the cabaret list I knew who the winner would be and that we would not score that prize two years running, and I knew Levi would get shut out, although I had hopes costumes might win.  Marc Ginsburg lost Levi but won for supporting for The Scarlet Pimpernel.
