Well, you've read the notes, the notes played the shell game, and now it is time for you to post until the shelled cows come home.

Sometime late last year, I bought a two-pack of porch lights at Costco.  I didn't (and don't) need two, but they were nice looking and cheaper than buying just one at The Home Depot.  Anyway, I finally put up the one for my back door and here it is:

Today is going to be a day.  First, I have to meet the president of our supervisor's union so that she can be added to the account as a signatory.  Then, I'm going to my parents' house for our weekly family dinner, and then I'll leave from there to go with my friend Margo to see the new Avengers movie!

What time is it? Wait. What day is it?

Oh yeah. Got a matinee and evening show today, with at least a nice catered meal betwixt and between.

A couple of hiccups, mostly technical, but last night was probably the best opening night they’ve ever had. The book is no great shakes, but the score is great fun and with a good cast and production it’s one heckuva crowd pleaser.

JFK:  I was in junior high school in Fort Lauderdale. We were getting on the school buses to go home, and people were saying the president had been shot. For a while we could only take it as being a joke that was going around.

MLK and RFK:  I don’t have nearly the recall on these, as the events unfolded, but it was the spring and summer at the end of my first year at school in Cleveland. My chief memory is of a special dedicated concert or two at the Meadowbrook School during the summer, but what a wholly different time, with the Sixties in full swing.

Will definitely seek out that documentary.

DR FJL, in 1984 anyone could nominate something for the Pulitzer, provided you had the requisite materials, from author bios and photos to whatever was required for the nominated piece.  In the case of theatre, it was a script, and for a musical or opera, a libretto, score, and recording.  I was supplied with everything I needed by the Sondheim office and I paid the nomination fee.

I know nothing about air purifiers, but this is the kind of thing Consumer Reports excels at. Maybe you can look at their site and find some "top recommendations" or some such. You won't get all the details without being a paid member, but I've done that and gotten invaluable pointers on things.

I was in 6th grade when RFK was assassinated , I was eating breakfast before school and the phone rang (unheard of at that hour) and my Mom answered and said "oh no, not Bobby, not Bobby"

I was confused because that's my brothers name ...

I was still in sixth grade when MLK was assassinated, it was raining pretty hard and my Dad decided to drive me to school instead of making me walk to the bus stop and wait in the rain.

It came over on the car radio just a block from the school and he pulled over to the side of the road  while we listened to the report.

When we arrived at school all the teachers were running around frantically and a number of  them were crying

On the one hand, it's funny that I don't have specific memories of the MLK and RFK events as they transpired. At most times in my life, I've usually been all over "big" current events as they happened. But school years were different, somehow. In a way, I was in another world, wasn't hanging around the normal crowds, and in those days there wasn't always a television around. Oddly, I remember one gathering in the dorm to watch the moon landing. Later, I became more tuned in to things again, like Kent State...

I’m too young to remember JFK and we didn’t have a TV for much of the rest of the 60s. But I do remember visiting my Uncle James on the day of RFK’s funeral. He not only had TV, he had color TV. The funeral was the only thing on TV, and we were upset that we weren’t going to be watching anything interesting.

Back in those days of three networks, nobody questioned a network devoting hours to a news event. Wonder if anything like that would ever happen now.

On Nov. 22, 1963, I was sitting in an economics class taught by Mr Gamble, when there was an announcement that President Kennedy had been shot, classes were suspended and all students should gather their things and go home.  I have no memory of getting home that day, but I probably caught the Ortman Stewart bus in front of the Central Pastry.  I usually caught it there or walked into downtown Middletown, browsed through dept. stores or Readmore and caught the bus at the bus station on Broad Street.

When Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King were assassinated iun 1968, I probably learned of them a day later.  In April 1968 I was finishing up my senior year at Miami and in June 1968 I was dealing with one last course to graduate in August, working at the Miami U Library and beginning the summer theatre season.

TOD:

I was in the 8th grade....when we came back from our lunch break, our history teacher Mr. Marksbary gave us a reading assignment and left the room.  The next period we went to English class....our teacher Mrs. Stuck was late arriving.....she left again....and came back crying.  We went to Science Class.  A fellow student Karla Doty raised her hand and said "Someone said the President was shot."  The teacher Mr. Alexander said "There will be an announcement."

Mr Boyd the principal came on the intercom and confirmed that President Kennedy had been shot and was dead...LBJ was the new president....  We were told to go to our busses and the walking kids were told to go home.

We didn't hear about MLK until the end of the day.....it was my senior year.  Later that summer, my mother woke me up and said "Kennedy was shot..."  I said "We know all about that..."  And she said "No, Bobby Kennedy...."

None of the events or their aftermaths seemed to be real....

TOD - I was in junior high when JFK died and have similar memories of teachers in tears.  MLK and RFK were during my senior year of high school.  In April 1968 (MLK), Detroit was still reeling from devastating race riots the previous summer and some violence broke out that spring.  I remember my Dad waking me up for school with the news about RFK.

T.O.D.

JFK: I was in Hollywood, getting in my car just off Hwd. Blvd.; on the way to the first day of my first job since moving to Los Angeles.  A woman said to me, "The President has been shot!".

MLK: Absolutely no memory of where I was when I heard about this.

RK: I read it in the morning paper.  We had been listening to the election returns, but had gone to bed early before it happened.

I am pleased to announce that my play, BRODERICK CRAWFORD, is now available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle editions. (The 2 editions probably won't be "married" on Amazon for about 24 hours, so if you want the Kindle, you'll have to look it up separately.)

BRODERICK CRAWFORD is a 3 character play. Aside from Brod, who was a personal friend, the other 2 characters are the spirits of his parents, vaudevillians Lester Crawford and Helen Broderick.

Broderick Crawford is certainly best remembered for his Oscar-winning performance in ALL THE KING'S MEN, BORN YESTERDAY and his hit TV series, HIGHWAY PATROL.

Performance rights are available.

Ninth grade, Jr. High senior class photo day was a bit depressing as we all tried to put some cheer into it.  I wish our school had sent us home early on that sad November day.

I had been working in the gym office talking to my favorite teacher whom I worked for.  The other student in the office came in from a dental appointment and told us Kennedy had been shot.  Our first reaction was disbelief, and then the PA system came on with the news.

In June of 1968 I was living in an apartment behind Hamilton High, Keith was still living at his parent's house across the street from Hami.

We had spent the day campaigning for Eugene McCarthy with friends and then went to the campaign rally.  Even though McCarthy had lost to Kennedy I still felt happy as I was leaning more and more towards Kennedy and either candidate was fine with me.

The first thing I did when Keith dropped me off at my place was turn on the tv to watch Kennedy's acceptance speech.  You know how that went.

Elmore, I had three air purifiers in my house in Alexandria, VA to help with the pollen. They definitely helped. I like purifiers with an easy-to-clean prefilter. It's amazing how much gunk is in the air!

My neighbor, not a particularly health-minded guy, recently bought a purifier from Costco for about $99. Don't recall the brand, but he's been very impressed.

I hope you're happy with your Honeywell.

I went to a new acupuncturist yesterday. My new health plan covers acupuncture, which should be a big help, but my previous acupuncturist wasn't happy with the amount the insurance pays her. I always liked her, but felt it was time for a change. I've had many acupuncturists over the years, mostly Chinese, but also a few Koreans and a few Americans. My first acupuncturist, back in the days when acupuncture was new to the US, was an orthopedic surgeon. My new acupuncturist is the first Jewish woman. She does a Japanese form of acupuncture, which uses smaller needles. I don't even feel them. I'll give her a try. It's definitely a different experience.

Vixmom, if you want to lose weight, cut the carbs, especially the sugar. Some fats are healthy fats and important to your diet. Unfortunately, ice cream isn't in that category. I gave up my beloved Trader Joe's caramel swirl ice cream recently by INCREASING my fish oil. If you're not getting enough of the healthy fats you can crave fat in general. It's not the healthy fat we usually head for with our craving--it's the ice cream. (Or whipped cream or ...).  Try to reduce the saturated fats (the fats from meat and dairy.) And cut back on sugar. You'll lose the weight.

T.O.D.

I was in 8th grade drama class and we were supposed to be rehearsing the Christmas play.  Our teacher and a long-time family friend, Ruth Anderson, came into class late and she announced that the President had been shot.  By the end of the hour, they came on the PA system to announce that Kennedy had died.  The rest of the day, we watched TV in the classrooms until it was time for the day to end.

T.O.D.

Every day in the Spring of 1968, my mom and I would drive out to the nursing home to see my grandmother.  I was finished with school at 2:30 and would go to my former junior high, where my mom was a teacher, and we would leave from there.  After an hour or two, we would go and have dinner and then go back to the nursing home.  On April 4, we were on our way to dinner when they announced that Martin Luther King had been killed.

In June, I was doing SOUND OF MUSIC.  Since I had now graduated, when I got home I would watch THE TONIGHT SHOW.  On the evening of June 4/5, I came home from the production, and instead of turning on the TV, I went right to bed.  My mom woke me up in the morning to tell me that Bobby had been shot.

Had a wonderful day at Mass MoCA, a modern art facility in an old factory complex. Saw some amazing pieces, two of which were breathtaking. James Tuller’s light installation felt like you were walking in clouds of yellow, blue and green, like on a set of some old science fiction movie. Then Laurie Anderson has created the most all-encompassing virtual reality experience; it made you feel like you were flying.

I think a halter monitor is a very good idea. You might want to keep a little diary of what you eat and drink while on the halter in case that is the trigger. Too much chocolate will do it to me.

Yesterday after acupuncture I stopped for a veggie burger. This was the place where they have Impossible Burgers. I asked the manager, who's a friend, how they're selling. She said they're selling quite well and that most people really like them. This isn't a vegan restaurant; it's a very meat-oriented menu.

Spent a good portion of the evening finishing a song.  I'm still getting used to it - it's very different than what I was imagining I'd write for what is basically an eleven o'clock number, but there's something funky and fun about it that I'm responding to, so unless something else comes to me as I continue, I think we'll try this.

Tonight at 10:00 p.m. they showed a rerun from last Monday late night of Jimmy Kimmel.  His guests were some of the cast members of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR.  I couldn’t tell you who his guests were, because every time he started to announce his guests’ names, the audience screamed so loud that you couldn’t hear a word he said.  At least, I regnized Robert Downey Jr.

, and then I'll leave from there to go with my friend Margo to see the new Avengers movie!

A FB friend in So. California went last night.  They pre-purchased the tickets and still had a 40 minute wait in line.  They were let inside the theater 30 minutes before the movie began.

Margo said that she'd buy the tickets either yesterday or early today, and since they're all assigned seats, we can get there whenever we want.

Assigned seats is the best way to see the movie with the crowds.   BTW, my friend said it was amazing.

The place was almost filled and the movie was very good.

Thanks, Larry!   That's great that you did it with the office's blessing.  So it looks like they take submissions from the public seriously.  I guess no one would submit frivolously anyway because of the fee.

Larry, how much was the fee?  Do you remember?
