Well, you've read the notes, the notes had heavy lids, and now it is time for you to post until the heavy-lidded cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: CORDILLERA!
-
Good morning, all!
-
I keep thinking today is Saturday.
-
Last night I dreamed I was in a garden store to purchase some nasturtiums to plant around my parents home where I grew up.
Our house is on the left.

In my dream, the nasturtiums looked like celery stalks, and I could get no one to come to the counter and take my money. I believe I was purchasing 10-12 plants.
-
Yesterday I accomplished nada, so today I must apply myself to How To Succeed . . .
I want to finish Act One soon.
-
Good morning, all.
-
A very quick howdy do this morning, and I must be off.
-
DR Elmore, on seeing that, my first thought was Sweet Apple, Ohio.
-
TOD
Audiobook in the car: ECHO PARK, nice LA-centric murder mystery. Not today, but back to it tomorrow.
-
Have a great day, everyone!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Jane, the first round of figs usually happens when the leaves come out. There will be a later round where gigs could happen, maybe two.
-
TCB, corn tortillas, of course.

That tree is great but the house could use a bit of landscaping your dreaming instincts are correct.

In my dream, the nasturtiums looked like celery stalks, and I could get no one to come to the counter and take my money. I believe I was purchasing 10-12 plants.
And obviously a part of you knew it wasn't your home anymore ;)

Thanks John. It seemed a bit early to me.
-
Happy birthday, Irving Berlin!
-
Thanks John. It seemed a bit early to me.
Cecil and Pam have a different type of fig (we bought them at the same time). Their tree is laden with fruit. It’s essentially the beginning of summer here.

TCB - It seems that's where the technique goes back to - the first successful musical with a plot built entirely around existing popular songs seems to be the movie "Singing' in the Rain." From Wikipedia: “Singin’ In The Rain originally conceived by MGM producer Arthur Freed, the head of the "Freed Unit" responsible for turning out MGM's lavish musicals, as a vehicle for his catalog of songs written with Nacio Herb Brown…”
Freed and Brown added “Make ‘Em Laugh” (which some call a “homage” to Cole Porter’s “Be A Clown” - but Porter didn't sue, of course, as close as it feels), and “Moses Supposes” was written by Roger Edens and Comden & Green, based on a famous tongue-twister.
The "Singing' in the Rain" pre-exisiting songs were mostly the jukebox songs in their era.
The term "jukebox musical" didn't exist then, and I think the term was meant as belittling.
I suspect that's why the term "catalog musical" was thought up along the way.

Good morning to all

Got my laptop back!!!
-
Good news about DR ELMORE's Jo....vibes for DR JOHN G's friend Donna's daughter.
-
DR TCB doesn't know his APT from his OFT.

The only thing that REALLY bothers me about Jeanne Tesori is that she wrote an ENTIRE score for THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE and not ONE song she wrote has the feel or sound of the 1920's.....it was weird.
The new show doesn't sound like my cup of tea, but it certainly has a good pedigree. And as MR BK wrote - kudos to anyone who tries to write and ORIGINAL musical!
-
BK - do the New York critics tend to come to L.A. these days?
The Times did a big article a few days ago on the making of the show you saw last night.
-
I know the NY Times went to La Jolla to see "Hands on a Hardbody." but that was about five or six years ago, and the Times critic reviewed two new musicals on that California trip.
-
The director sent me a program to proof.....it lists THREE choreographers NONE of whom is me....but that's okay. It's nice to get credit, but I don't need the blame.... I am listed as Assistant Director, so I'm assuming she figured that was enough.
But you know me.....
-
OPENING NIGHT VIBES FOR DR GEORGE!!!
-
DR FJL how was the score for HARDBODY? I kind of liked the idea, but couldn't figure out how the story could be staged....I guess that's a reason to see it!
-
Page Two Boss Hogg Dance.
Last night the director was gone and asked me to take the rehearsal. The vocal director forgot to come, so I had 17 adults and 16 children....looking at me....at least I did have the pianist there....
I had fun. But then I love being:

Speaking of originals vs. adaptations, you didn't see this in ALL ABOUT EVE: (or Harvey Evans as the gay dresser in the Thelma Ritter role)
"But Alive" - with Lauren Bacall AND lights shouting "Gay Power" (starting 1:55 in) - and on 1973 network TV
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRikWbT6WG0
Was this the first time a musical had 20 happy gay characters just being happy? - a huge gay bar number where none of the gay characters end up with so much as a hangnail (though that swing at the end of the song looks dangerous :) )

SPOILER ALERT: (NOT A BIG SPOILER, it's set up early enough in the show)
Since it's a musical, it was set up early that the characters will step away from the vehicle when they're in their minds, like for the songs.
Also, IIRC, in the movie, too - each person got a very very short periodic break to take their hand off the car.
-
Thanks John. It seemed a bit early to me.

No. Pam eats a few and they leave the rest to the birds.

I just came across this amazing opening to the 1976 Oscar ceremony.
There was only one Ray Bolger.

-
Jesse Green should not review musicals written before Sondheim. His review of Me and My Girl shows his willful ignorance of a type of show that, we get it, he doesn’t like. It was the same with The New Yorkers last year.
-
I'm up, I'm up - barely. I guess I got seven hours of sleep.
-
The articles about Soft Power have been relentless.
-
DR DRUXY when I did THE CRUCIBLE in 2012 with David Cryer - Jon Cryer's dad - and Britt Swanson Cryer.....they had stories about Mr. Bolger.
They met doing COME SEPTEMBER on the road and then bringing it to Broadway. Britt said they got wonderful reviews on the road. Audiences loved the show and Ray. Then they got to NYC, and the show was ravaged by the critics.
Britt said Ray was a gentleman and very easy to work with. If he didn't like something or someone - he would make his WIFE complain about it....so everyone hated her - but loved him.....
-
This LA Times story makes it sound pretty awful....although it's a preview not a review.
Don't click on it DR ELMORE there's a great BIG picture of Tesori in it.

Unfortunately, I never met the man. However, at one Hollywood premiere I attended, he was sitting in the seat right in front of me.

Friday afternoon greetings! I had a morning coffee visit with Rebecca, stopped at a garage sale fundraiser to see my friends, and came home for lunch. I've been answering emails and doing some other things to get ready to leave tomorrow for almost a week in Michigan with my sister.

TOD - in my car this morning I listened to THE GRASS HARP, which is sublime!

Later this afternoon, Richard and I are going to the local outlet mall for me to do some shoe shopping.

I keep seeing an animated cartoon ad for Humana in my area, and I keep thinking that the character looks so much like DR GINNY that she could use it for an avatar.

I’m at one of our satellite offices today. It’s 3 pm and more than half of the people have left already.

And on the embarrassing side of my family, my niece Emily, Macbeth's older daughter, will be appearing on the next season of Bravo's The Real Housewives of Orange County. Randy and I are betting how long before Lady M will try to push her fat ass onto the program.

Well, who knows? Perhaps she will crash and burn. It's the next season, so I have no idea when it will begin.
-
The more I think about Soft Power the less I like it. I did not, however, mention the excellent cast and Danny Troob orchestrations. But this team is like all teams today - completely not understanding what the damn purpose of a tryout really is. They're clearly locking the show at the Ahmanson and THEN will reconvene for changes before San Francisco, thereby subverting the entire point - which is throw out that which is clearly not working, cut the crap that's not working, rewrite, and put all those changes IN at the Ahmanson during the run - that's how you fix - you listen, you learn, you change and then the audience tells you if you got it right.
-
Soft Power sounds soft-headed, and I don’t think the playwright wants to be soft. I wonder if the money is talking too much.
-
Anybody watching Little Women Sunday?

It's interesting. Last week, I just finished reading Ted Chapin's Everything Was Possible: The Birth of the Musical Follies (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N8Y8M44/) (I LOVED IT! WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG TO READ THIS??), and he talks about this very thing. They're in Boston and they're listening to the audiences and EVERYONE is making changes (Hal Prince, Michael Bennett, Stephen Sondheim, James Goldman) and nothing is set until they reach Broadway. That makes so much sense. Maybe writers nowadays don't (or can't?) write or re-write that quickly. Just a thought. :-\
-
No one working in musical theatre today understands the process - they're cocky in a way none of the old guard was. I just never understand it. I made changes to Levi right through the run - mostly cosmetic and minor due to the mostly student cast not being around to rehearse changes and because AEA is really jerky about making changes on the guest artist contract - which is a lot of nerve with a new show, but AEA is just about as jerky and stupid as it gets.
-
It's a great book DR GEORGE!
-
Anybody watching Little Women Sunday?
I may. I liked the screenwriter's work on Cranford and Call the Midwife, but she made an abortion of Gigi for Broadway last year. It was a mess of Lerner's screenplay as well as Colette's novella, turning a sophisticated comedy into a teenage romcom.

That may be a sign they're expecting the top NY critics to show up in L.A. (which can happen if it's high profile and not officially called a "tryout" before Bway.)

Done here and driving back tomorrow.
I’m sorry to leave this nice weather. It was 15 or 20 degrees cooler in Danbury today. But unfortunately, that’s par for the course. I’m used to it. Still...

Stopped at Kroger and picked up a few cans of chili, and a twelve-pack each of Vernors for DR Elmore and me.

Cincinnati souvenirs.

My trip to the outlet mall was quite fruitful - 1 pair of Nikes and 2 pairs of Reeboks. The podiatrist told me to wear more supportive lace-up shoes, so it's her fault...

We went to McMenamins for dinner tonight. They had a brussels sprout dish that was delicious. Keith enjoyed his fish and chips. I usually get a vegie burger in some sort of beer marinade. Since they didn't offer their beer whatever I had half a tuna sandwich on toasted sour dough bread along with fries. It was very good but I should have ordered a whole sandwich so I could combine the two halves of filling onto one half sandwich on bread.
-
DR John, I like their old fashioned, even with the cherry since it is the good bourbon kind. I have to ask for it up since they regular ice melts into the drink before it reaches the table.
Do you know if ordering up it should be cold? It wasn't.

Listening to the master of our next soundtrack - sounds great. Not sure when I can announce, as this has to be approved by Sony (the packaging) and then they print and press and ship to us.

Yes and no. I'm on disc 3 of 14. It's a little overwritten and hyperviolent. And I've only gotten to the first appearance of the three witches or whatever they are. But I'm glued to it.

Decided to do the liner notes for the soundtrack release. So those are out of the way.
-
BK, thank you for Feathertop. I'm really enjoying it. I know it's not top drawer and there ain't a lot to it, but it's cherce.
-
I thought i was all set to make rhubarb cake in the morning. Got all of the ingredients, or so I thought. No eggs. Must hit the grocery first thing in the morning.

Good evening.
-
This crappy WIFI is driving me crazy.
-
I went to see my new eye doctor today for the first time. I am very glad I changed. WOW! What a hottie!
-
And unlike my previous eye doctor, this one is nice.
-
I hope George’s opening night went well.
-
I watched LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER’S Andrew Rannells in concert. I loved it. He was terrific. He sang “Your Fault” from INTO THE WOODS, singing all the parts himself. Very funny.
-
I think Ginny should use that as her avatar.
-
And now, I'm off to the theater! I'm sure we'll have a good show. Thanks again for all the opening night vibes!
Be back later!
Well, we had a great show tonight!
-

It did!
-
DR TCB doesn't know his APT from his OFT.
I guess I don’t understand this one.

I recorded it. I'll have to watch it sometime soon because my DVR is almost full! :o

I am not looking forward to driving to Seattle tomorrow. They have all but two lanes shut down this weekend. Oh joy1
-
We are leaving at 4:00, and the concert is at seven, but we hope to eat before the show.
-
One more post.

Hi, George.
-
Did you have a nice crowd?
-
I am reading. (Or rereading) William Manchester’s THE DEATH OF A PRESIDENT. It is amazing the changes in the way Blacks are treated between 1963 and today.
-
And unlike my previous eye doctor, this one is nice.
That definitely a plus!
-
Hi, George.
Hi, Tom.

They were a good crowd. There are always a lot of kids, so you never know what it's going to be like from performance to performance. Wexll see what it's like at tomorrow's matinee!
