Nursie, when the thunder began, and Annabelle crawled into my lap for safety, I hadn't seen her look so panicked since the day the elevator crew terrified her in February and she was literally throwing herself at an apartment door for safety.  Her eyes were huge and she was shaking.  My initial instinct was, if this is scaring her, Thatch must be close to a stroke.

Well, he was very calm throughout the storm.  And I have a theory.

Until he was two months old, he was living on a Bronx garage roof, and that would have been October.  I suspect he, his family, and any other feral cats in the colony were already wise to living outside and dealing with weather and unfriendly animals and humans.  His survival instincts are really strong, from burying and reburying his litter to eating and drinking with one eye looking for trouble.  He now trusts me and shows his affection daily, but there's still a frightened, wary animal when it comes to physical threat but I don't think a storm will ever scare him.

I would love to know Annabelle's first 10 months before I adopted her.  She's well-socialized, extremely affectionate and friendly, and clearly spent much of her early life being very well treated.  She was brought to the Animal Control Center as a stray, so she wasn't dropped off there because her owner died, moved, got bored, had a baby, or any other excuse they give for dumping an animal.

I've wondered if she became pregnant and the owners dumped her out on the street, if she belonged to some college student who callously dropped her on the streets, or if she simply got out of the house/apartment and became lost.

I spoke to our DR ChasSmith just now.  I'm sure my paraphrasing will hve errors, but here's what I've understood things to be.  A number of trees are felled across the driveway, so they need someone to clear the drive so they have access to the main road.  When that occurs, he can at least get to a place with wifi and use his laptop.

The damage to the house is to a corner of the attic roof, which needs to be covered because there's more rain predicted today and they can suffer water damage.  The power is out and the house is running on a generator, which may be good for only a couple of more days and there's no knowledge when the power will be restored.

Title: Re: KILLER BABIES
Post by: elmore3003 on May 16, 2018, 05:57:26 AM
This morning's patrol took us down to the first floor.  Annabelle stopped at several doors to pay calls but no one was home.  I thought it would be fun to take her to the foyer and let her look out on the street from the ground level.  When we got there, she panicked, climbed up on my shoulder and kept mewing in a rather frightened "help me" sort of tone.  I hope she didn't think I was going to open the door and toss her out.
Title: Re: KILLER BABIES
Post by: elmore3003 on May 16, 2018, 06:01:35 AM
So then, while she was on my shoulder and calling for help, a mother with two children aged 3-5, I'd guess, walked by and saw us.  They stopped and watched us for a moment,  I was friendly, Annabelle was not, but I wasn't going to open the outside door yp the street because that might have scared Annabelle to death.

Then we walked back into the building and she ran to her boyfriend Val's apartment.  He was out so I picked her up and brought her back upstairs.  She's chilling out in the cat tree and Thatch is begging for food.

If he were still living on a garage roof in the Bronx in early October, he would have survived several hurricane-like storms.  I know that not all of his family survived to be rescued.

It's less than three hours and I think we're getting "Scenes from Little Women"; Mark Adamo;s dreadful opera takes a similar approach.

I felt the scene in the kitchen between Beth and Marmee was poorly done.  It was important too as it expressed, or at least I thought that was what it was attempting, the heart of Beth's personality and the person she is.  I should have been lost in the story not thinking "What?".  Later I had to explain it to Keith as he had the same issue.

I feel like asking Annablle that at least once a day.

Another favorite Merman swearing story, about the swear jar and Loretta Young, from the link below:

Merman was notorious for her swearing. In the video documentary, Sondheim on Sondheim, Composer and lyricist, Stephen Sondheim recounts the time Merman was rehearsing for a guest appearance on The Loretta Young Show. Warned of Young’s no-swearing policy on set, Merman would have to pay $1.00 into a curse box each time she swore. As she was getting into an ill-fitting gown, Merman let out, “Oh shit, this damn thing’s too tight.” Young swiftly thrust her curse box at her and said, “Come on Ethel, put a dollar in. You know my rules.” Merman reportedly replied, “Ah, honey, how much will it cost me to tell you to go f--- yourself?!”

I once had lunch with retired publicist Robert Ullman and Playbill editor Louis Botto and they had me rolling on the floor with Ethel Merman stories.  Once, onstage in Call Me Madam, the stage crew was so noisy that she stopped a scene, said to the audience, Excuse me, turned upstage and yelled, Shut the F**k up!!!

I think Ethel was Ethel and cared little for others' feelings.  She may have also felt Young's faux-piety hard to bear.  I had heard the event happened in the 1930s when they were both at Paramount Studios, and Young would have been one more star on the lot.

What's interesting is that in the Lubitsch movie, the leading lady's name is Gilda, pronounced with a J sound. Noel Coward provided the introduction, and he pronounced it the same way.

But in the TV production, they pronounce it Gilda with a G, like the Rita Hayworth movie.

The company decided to do something new, which was odd. They're now paying us a day in advance, so my paycheck appeared in my account this afternoon. Except ... they didn't tell anyone. Needless to say, a few of the 32,000 of us were a bit freaked out.

That's very strange!  Do you get paid after the pay period ends?  We get paid on the last day of the pay period, so if someone (in a very rare occurrence) needs to take a day without pay (or worse, quits or gets fired) before the business office can adjust things, they either have to have that amount held from their next pay check (unless they quit or were fired), or pay the money back.  Fortunately, this is a very rare occurrence...although it has happened.

No. We get paid after every other week. And you work the two weeks and then get paid the following week.

There has been talk about changing our two payday dates from the 15th and last working day of the month to five days later: the 20th and the 5th of the next month.  That would screw up a LOT of things for a lot of people, but if they give us enough warning, I don't think that we as employees have the choice to not get paid later.

People who were hired after a certain date are paid that way, but not everyone is...yet.  We'll see if it ever happens.

FInally catching up with part one of LIttle Women. Emily Watson is a great Marmee. She really acts like a mother of teenaged girls. She's wonderful.

J.B. is not afraid of thunderstorm. They can be as loud as they can get and it doesn't faze him. But he was scared when the tornado went through the neighborhood. The loud whistle did upset him.

I don't like high whistle sounds either.

DR John at least they paid you a day early instead of a day late.  It is very strange they forgot to mention it.
