Here is comedy at its finest - I was sending some Facebook birthday wishes, one of whom was to an actress I worked with some time ago - she was in my show Start at the Top back around 1972. She's come to a couple of Kritzerland shows recently. The age she lists? 47. Do the math folks. 1972. That is forty-six years ago. Which made her one when she did my show and let me tell you she was not one. I think she perhaps has simply removed about eighteen or nineteen years from her age.

I think we had a suicide in the building last night. Around midnight, Thatch and I were awakened by my lobby door buzzing. It's always someone ringing the wrong apartment, so I ignored it. Ten minutes later, it began again,over and over and over. So I answered the phone to the lobby, and it was the police trying to get into the building. They came to my apartment and asked me for the key to apartment 5D, I think.

I said, I fob't have a key, and the officer said, the super says you've got a key, Nope, I have no keys to any other apartments, I insisted. Then I heard my neighbor Mark's voice, saying they had the keys! Val gave the cops the wrong apartment. When he returns from vacation, he's dead.

So, there were flashing ambulance and police lights outside my window for some time, several hours, I'd guess. Thatch and I went back to bed. I'll find out ehat happened when Annabelle and I patrol.

Niw that my appointment is cancelled, I must run to the pharmacy for my meds this morning.

Here's Magnificat's Thursday night update on Mego:
Mego is out of surgery and doing quite well!
The surgery was longer than expected. This time around, they found that part of the fat that covers the intestines had necrotized and was probably contributing to the persistent infection. The necrotic portion was removed and the entire abdominal cavity carefully washed out. The fluid draining out of his belly, which had been thick and yellow, is already much clearer. Our greatest fear going into surgery was that his blood pressure would drop again, and it did dip towards the end. But they were able to bring it up quickly with another plasma transfusion, and right now it is looking nice and stable!
Mego may look quiet in this picture, but that's because he is still groggy from the anesthesia. Otherwise, he is doing so well that in a few minutes he is going to get his first meal through the esophageal feeding tube they put in this afternoon.
We would like to thank everybody for their generous support and for sharing Mego's fundraiser. We are not out of the woods just yet, but things are definitely looking up!

I sent a Disney gift by email in advance for the baby's first birthday. That way, one less thing to have to think about. The departure by bus from Port Authority is always unpleasant, mainly because the forming of the lines is so disorganized. Departure on the other side from PA back to New York is always a breeze. Scranton always had such a pleasant waiting area, and they made it so much better recently.

We're to have a couple hours of it, then things should dry up and tonight's fireworks thing should be a much more pleasant affair than everything else this whole past week has been. We're actually getting "normal" temperatures today through Sunday, with some damn nice open-window sleeping temperatures these first couple of nights. This heat wave has lasted an entire week or longer.

I've made the pasta sauce with tomatoes, black olives, green peppers, and mushrooms. When the grouf pork and beef thaw, I'll brown it with onion and garlic and toss that into the mix as well. It smells great.

I'm taking advantage of today's scorcher (98 degrees was predicted) to continue my apartment CULL. Today it's magazines, catalogs, and other papers. Gawd! It's always worse than I think. I honestly don't know how it piles up so fast. I throw out 2-3 bags of recycling every week. I've made progress, but I doubt that anyone could see it but me. To be honest, even I have trouble seeing it.

We considered trying TKTS for an evening show, but finally decided against it. It was past 6:30 when we got back to the hotel and we'd have had to turn right around and head for Times Square. We'd be exhausted at the end of an 8pm show, so we're taking the evening off. May go out later for some dessert.

Tonight's report on little Mego from Magnificat Cat Rescue:
What a day this has been. Bear with us, we want to tell you what happened.
As we mentioned in the morning update, we had a horrible night. That’s because we’d nod off for a couple of minutes, only to jerk awake in the middle of a nightmare about Mego in the VERG-Brookyn ICU. The dreams were so ominous we’d grab the phone and call the ICU. Each time we’d get the same report: yes, his blood pressure had gone down, but it was still within reasonable limits. The troubling dreams were completely unlike us. You have to understand, we are as stolid and unimaginative as a potato, and yet the uneasy sense that something was wrong continued to grow. At 10 a.m., when the phone rang, we already knew it was bad news.
Mego was crashing. His blood pressure had plummeted. His biomarkers were terrible. His bilirubin had doubled. And the cat that had been so alert and responsive yesterday was stuporous and obviously failing. They had given him a transfusion of red blood cells at an hour earlier, but he was not responding. His red blood cell count was now at 14%. The vet came right out and said it: “We’ve done everything we can do medically. It is time to do what is best for Mego.”
We agreed. What else could we do? But we asked if it made sense to give him another three hours. The vet said that sounded reasonable, so long as we were prepared to make a decision when she called at one.
You can imagine what the next three hours were like. We kept reminding ourselves that we had done the best we could and that we knew going in how serious sepsis was. When the phone rang at 1 p.m., we had to brace ourselves to answer. Only this time around the vet’s voice sounded completely different. What she said surprised us so much that we kept asking her to repeat it.
Mego, the dying cat, had rallied and astonished the ICU staff. For the THIRD time.
His blood pressure was up. His red blood cell count was rising. He had come out of the stupor.
“And,” said the vet, with palpable disbelief, “he is eating!”
We spoke to the vet again just now. We’ve been through so many ups and downs we wanted to make sure he was still doing well. Tonight’s report is excellent: his red blood cells are up to 30% (almost normal), doppler blood pressure holding steady at 110, and his other biomarkers are looking good! He keeps trying to sit up, although he can’t hold it for long. But when food is put in front of him, he lifts his head and starts eating.
The staff at VERG Brooklyn North has been wonderful. They even send us pictures every night so we can update all of Mego’s supporters. We truly appreciate all they are doing.
One final thought tonight: while we can categorically state that we have no psychic powers whatsoever, we are beginning to think Mego does
