Title: LITTLE THIEVES
Post by: bk on July 20, 2018, 12:19:39 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of little thieves and what they deserve and will hopefully get, and now it is time for you to post until the thieving cows come home.

BK forgot to post a picture when he first posted last night's notes.  Could that be what you're thinking of?

No.  In today’s notes he talks about the dress in “Let’s Get Together.”  He said, “Ok, I’ll share.  Then he said, “Pretty adorable.”  I thought there was supposed to be a photo.

Little or nothing new to report here, too.

ANNIE rehearsal went fine. Now back to the keyboard work, hopefully pretty much all day today.

And though I haven't been a day-job working person for several years now, this is one of those weeks in which I find myself saying, "I'm glad it's Friday."

T.O.D.

We'll just be watching the summer TV shows, or maybe pull out an old DVD.

I watched SEABISCUIT yesterday.  Wonderful movie.  Hadn't seen it in years and remembered little about it, so it was like watching a new film.

Shocking news from MR BK.....the same thing happened to me ONCE....like MR BK, when I got in the car something seemed wrong...and there was change on the floor....  Nothing else was missing - there was nothing of interest or value in the car....but at least they didn't take papers or tear up the lock when they broke in.

THE MOUSETRAP last night seemed a bit flat....but the audience enjoyed it and I got some nice responses on my bits and pieces...

TWO MORE TIMES TO DEAL WITH SHE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED.

She was disappointed that she bought tickets for her parents who decided NOT to come.  She says that it's too bad because this will be their only time to really see her in a part because once she goes to LA and her career takes off, they won't have the money to travel to see her  -  although they can buy the DVDs of her movies and tv shows....  And she says this and believes it....

The "agency" that she is PAYING to represent and teach her is telling her anything she wants to hear to keep her money flowing (which she doesn't really have)...but of course she KNOWS everything and will correct anyone and proclaim forth on ANY subject that happens to be discussed by others....

Sorry to hear about the car break-in. Things like that are more disturbing than you think they'd be. "Violated" is exactly the right word, and that isn't to downplay far worse things than a small break-in. Anything like that is a violation of one's world. You can go years without any such incident and feel so complacent -- and then it happens, and it's a reminder that the world around you is not an entirely friendly place.
Title: Re: LITTLE THIEVES
Post by: ChasSmith on July 20, 2018, 06:07:28 AM
I've been mulling over similar "violating" incidents in my life. The first one (of four) happened during my year in Cleveland when I, along with a few other school friends, had what was a mostly enjoyable job driving Yellow Cabs. One night I was in line at a cab stand downtown, and when this guy got in and told me his destination, I made a valiant attempt at fighting off the feeling of "here it is, this is not a good one, and it's happening to ME this time". Minutes later we were about to make our final turn down a side street and I remember saying some silly casual thing in the hope that he was about to get out, when I felt him press something cool against the back of my neck as he said "now just do as I say".

Long story short:  He took whatever cash was there, tossed the ignition key out in front of the cab, and told me I'd been good and to wait five minutes -- whereupon I could get out, take the key, and leave. I'm happy to note that I'm here to tell about it.

All of us had at least one incident like that during the year we were driving. We really liked the job, otherwise, and we had no problem returning to work after these things. But, wow, think of something like that happening now, and it's enough to make you not want to leave the house.

The following year (1972) when my friend and I had just moved from Ohio to LA, we lived on the first floor (which was considerably elevated from street level, given the slope of the land there) at Franklin and Whitley, and the apartment's balcony was right in the front of the building. We hadn't been living in Hollywood more than a month or so when we came home one night to find the turntable, amp & speakers gone from the living room, and the front screen out of whack. We both remember noting that there were a few stacks of quarters and a few bills still sitting on a table nearby, which had somehow been missed in the burglary.

So, living in Hollywood and you didn't know there were people around who would break into easily-break-in-able apartments? Lesson learned.

This one's a minor incident, but oddly enough I never forgot it, and BK's experience even includes it:  Shortly after moving to Chicago in 1985 I took one of my many drives into the Loop (downtown) one Saturday morning and left the car in yer typical huge valet-parking garage for the afternoon. I'd been keeping a soft leather change purse packed with coins for parking meters in the glove compartment. After picking my car up later that day, or maybe even the next day or a subsequent day, I found the change purse completely emptied. Nothing else was disturbed. I was actually a little shook up at this lesson in trusting strangers who have your car in their care. Again, though, I was in a new and different city and this extremely minor incident was something that I "blamed" on downtown Chicago because, after all, this had never happened to me in LA.  :)

One more, and then I'll stop. It's the last one, anyway...and I hope it really is the last one for all time.

In 1999 I'd lived in this house for five years, and friend Kristi had been there with me for the last two of those years. I had gotten home from work one afternoon, and had been in my room just doing whatever, when I suddenly noticed that the little "jewelry box" thingy on my dresser wasn't there. In denial, my brain at first tried every conceivable rationalization in an attempt to explain why it wasn't where I expected it to be, but I soon had to accept that it had been taken. When Kristi got home she found her stuff rifled through as well. We had the police come out to file a report, and even THEY were surprised, as we walked through the house, to find all of the electronic equipment in my (closed-door) "music room" untouched.

Placing blame where it's due, we suspected that we'd actually left the house unlocked that day. None of the small (but very sentimental) things taken were ever recovered, of course, and none of it would have had any value whatever to a thief. The cop thought one or two clues indicated the culprit was a young female, and it just happened that Kristi's sister had brought a friend (who we didn't know) over with some other people a few days prior, and that friend also just happened to never come around again. Locks were changed, and that was that, but this one was a surprisingly emotional "violated" feeling for the both of us.

(Seriously.)  (So there have been five such things in my life.)  (Five.)  (Count 'em.)

After grad school, I spent a year on the Miami University library staff in Oxford, and I had a nice apartment on High Street in the middle of the Village of Oxford.  One of the high school boys in the world's worst production of Bye Bye Birdie sold me his old bike, and I used to bike to and from work. I did this for around eight months until I left the King Library one spring afternoon to find some ass had managed to break into my lock and steal the bike during the day.  That was the beginning of a 4-month run of bad luck until I left Oxford in late August.

The Duck Boat tragedy really made me flash back on when I took the Duck tour in Pittsburgh.  The disappointment on the vehicle was very strong when it was clear the condition of the water strongly suggested the on-the-water part of the ride should be skipped that afternoon.  For me and my friend, we were enjoying the sights of the city (much nicer than we'd expected), so we didn't mind missing the water part if it was a question - but for so many, the water part was why they chose the Duck Tour over a different sightseeing tour.  The business pressure of passenger disappointment could have been a factor in the tragic decision, but that's only from what I felt from having been on a similar ride in another city.  :(

Is she going to receive a lecture from an older, wiser person in the very near future ;)

Interesting bits about her folks who chose not to see her.  It might explain why once her career takes off she won't have the money to pay for their travel.

DR FJL I had to look up Duck boat to see the news.

My disappointment on a tour has never swayed a change of plans due to weather.  I have been on 2 boat rides that attempted the excursion but had to turn back, one due to fog the other to smoke.  I never felt in any danger.

Rough weather never gets negotiated.  This was a sad, stupid mistake.

I watched SEABISCUIT yesterday.  Wonderful movie.  Hadn't seen it in years and remembered little about it, so it was like watching a new film.

I suspect it won't be long before her downfall.

Horrible story, Chas. I'm so glad it wasn't worse.

The day I moved into this apartment, July 13, 1980, it was hot.  I was sweating so badly my glasses kept slipping off my nose, and it was hell.  The next day, Monday, I learned it was 104 F.  If I'd known, I might have told my Drama Book Shop friends helping me, I'll lie here; drive the van over me.

My news:
I've been considering options regarding my involuntary vacancy from my apartment. I was SHOCKED to learn what hotel prices are now. $200/night is about average and many of these have poor reviews (ripped or stained sheets, lots of noise, bad smells). Ugh! There's a small hotel not far from me that looks like a real dump driving by. It's $144/night--and the bath is down the hall. No private bathrooms. For $144/night!! I would have thought it'd be $80.

The more I think about this the more I feel that this is outrageous. The owner has not even given me the dates yet, so booking anything is impossible. When I pointed out that I do not have a vacation home the manager was indifferent. I've been a landlord myself and I can't imagine putting my tenants in that position.

I'm still evaluating my options. Whichever way I go it is a BIG inconvenience for me. Plus, I simply feel it isn't right. I rented this place in good faith. The poor maintenance wasn't my doing. The owner's known about the problems and dragged her feet because she didn't want to pay the bills. Now she expects me to bear the brunt of her incompetence. This isn't over.

DR Jeanne we had dinner with friends tonight and I asked about your situation.  They own rentals in Washington and do not think you should have to pay to rent a place while they do the work.

First they mentioned you should have the right to see their rental insurance agreement to know if it covers you.

Do you have rental insurance that might cover the situation?

I do have renter's insurance. I took it out last December when I was dealing with this issue. Unfortunately, it wouldn't cover even half the cost of a hotel. I'll be talking to my insurance company to learn more. Insurance policies tend to have lots of gotchas.

Post by: Jeanne on July 20, 2018, 07:21:54 PM
Last December the owner said that we didn't need to take out the damaged plaster, that the handyman could put up a piece of plywood. It wouldn't look nice, but it would secure the ceiling and I wouldn't have to move out. That solves the problem for me and that's how we'd left it--until Wed when her daughter decided otherwise.
Title: Re: LITTLE THIEVES
Post by: Jeanne on July 20, 2018, 07:25:58 PM
Yes, I would have to move out. Plaster dust is very fine and goes EVERYWHERE. The handyman assured me that he'd put plastic down everywhere, but that isn't enough. My allergies are severe; I go right off the scale. I'm allergic, among other things, to dust and the chemicals in paint and primers. Even if I didn't have allergies, I would have no access to my kitchen for at least three days, plus the painters need to come and go. I could not do my stretching, my meditation, or have any peace and quiet to work on the computer or anything else.
Title: Re: LITTLE THIEVES
Post by: Jeanne on July 20, 2018, 07:29:07 PM
Three days is the handyman's estimate, but there are often delays and complications. Three days is best case; it could easily take longer, depending on what he finds (mold, a leak, etc). Also, the paint has to cure. Nontoxic paints, which they say they'll use, cure quickly, so maybe only another day. As long as the smell is there I'm susceptible.
Title: Re: LITTLE THIEVES
Post by: Jeanne on July 20, 2018, 07:35:22 PM
I feel it's unreasonable to ask tenants to live in the units while it's being repaired, depending of course on what's going on. I use my kitchen daily. I don't cook a lot, but I make a blender breakfast drink and heat up other foods. I would also lose access to my kitchen table, my file cabinet, and all my other files. The painters would need about 60% of the apartment.

It plays only one weekend, August 16 - 19.
