Title: PLEASANT VALLEY SUNDAY
Post by: bk on July 23, 2018, 12:04:09 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were pleasant and written on a Sunday, and now it is time for you to post until the pleasant Valley Sunday cows come home.

An early Question for BK:  yesterday, you wrote:
Quote
At the end of my introductory remarks I really let the audience know what was what by saying that 90% of the show was singing - highlighting the SONGWRITER we were feting and then I called out our quintet and introduced Richard Allen as Richard Sherman's favorite musical director.

I'm curious...was the 16 minutes of the orchestra stuff at least instrumental versions of Sherman Brothers songs, or did they do completely different stuff?

After the movie yesterday, Margo and I went to a local restaurant, Casa Mia (from Mamma Mia to Casa Mia!).  The food was wasn't bad, but the service was.  We both had diet Pepsi, but it was flat.  The waitress didn't seem to understand what Margo was saying when she suggested that they might want to change their carbonated water tanks because there was no carbonation.  She got us new glasses, but they were kind of flat, too. :P Then, for our refills, she gave us Dr. Pepper...and not even diet Dr. Pepper!  When we told her that, she just took the glasses away, but didn't get us new diet Pepsis!  What the heck??  We left a tip, but not a huge one. ::)

Things remain quite rotten, and I see no end of this mess for some time.  The problem of hanging on by your nails is that eventually you have no more nails.

Nine of eleven members of an Indianapolis family were among those who lost their lives in the Branson Duck Boat accident last week....lots of news coverage and sad interviews.

A Go Fund Me Page for the family has raised almost half a million dollars....  I hope they get that money.

TOD:  Do you mean pop and top 40 type albums.

During the 1980s, Cyndi Lauper's album (the album that included "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun") and the Whitney Houston album that included "I Wanna Dance With Somebody..."   Something about the word "wanna" during the 1980s.  :).  Will singles be TOD another day?  (For me, that was Tracey Ullman's "They Don't Know," but somehow that whole album never became as much if a favorite as that single.)

Over the years, I've gotten to appreciate Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and Paul Simon's "Graceland."  Strangely, seeing "Spiderman" got me listening to more Bono and U2, and I really came to so admire U2's "The Joshua Tree" a great deal since then , while I hadn't noticed that album all that much in the 1980s.

I was lucky - first bit in over a week - and made all the bus connections within minutes.  It took me 45-50 minutes to make the trip.  Because of that explosion last week, 23rd Street is a mess and I had to walk extra blocks since the bus stops are screwed up along with traffic.

George, yes, the orchestra  began the show with a Sherman Brothers overture.  Two-thirds of the way through act one they did the Tom Sawyer overture.  They opened act two with a Mary Poppins medley, and they played some of Small World during the finale.

Had a fun time with Kay.  We just ran her patter, added a couple of little things, and then I fixed the one thing in the act that has bugged me from the very start - and she's now totally open to doing it and I think it will bring down the house.

Watching an early Peckinpah movie called Major Dundee with Charlton Heston. Richard Harris, with no change in his accent, is playing a Confederate soldier. It's snot as exciting as it should be, but I guess Peckinpah was learning his craft.

I had a call today from the building manager, saying that the handyman will be coming next Monday to start the work. I told her I'd not had enough time to arrange alternative housing and suggested we find another solution. She was not happy. But she called back a little while later with the alternative I'd suggested. This means I don't have to move out. It's funny how quickly things change. I don't think the mention of the word "lawyer" had anything to do with it, do you?

Home from an event I wished I hadn't gone to.  It was a panel about the musical of The Color Purple, a musical in know zero about.   The show had THREE songwriters all doing music and lyrics - I found it weird to hear all the talk about process and this and that when that is not typical of musical theater at all and also that these folks have never written another musical before or since.  The two songs we heard did not inspire me to think I would in any way like to see it.  And it was two hours long, this panel - too long.

What's an album?

Are you still listening to 78 shellacs?

Piano rollers.

I came home and watered the garden again. I got bit by quite a few mosquitoes. Ugh.

Was that a euphemism?

I rather liked Vixmom's recent comparison between a conductor and a stage director.

Although, rarely do all the actors in a play say their lines at the same time.  If they did, you would probably need a conductor to make them all blend harmoniously.

I don’t think there is much reason for me to go up to Seattle tomorrow.

It will probably be better to wait until Wednesday to see my niece.

I wish I could keep the slider open all night, but I guess that isn’t very safe.

Hello, George.

Good for you, Jeanne!
