Title: NOTES FOR YOUR VIEWING AND LISTENING PLEASURE
Post by: bk on July 24, 2018, 12:04:25 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had viewing and listening and hopefully a little pleasure, and now it is time for you to post until the viewing and listening cows come home.

Are you also getting them temporary props to use during rehearsals, so they won’t ruin the good ones before the show?

I didn't think about that.  Most of the stuff that I've gotten so far has come from The Dollar Tree, so it's pretty cheap.  Not all if it's a dollar each, but most of the other stuff isn't too flimsy, so I think it'll hold up.  Also, they haven't told me when they want to start using the props at rehearsal.

So, let's cut right to the chase.  I will not be attending the August 8 event and I do not appreciate the pressure.  Thanks to that goddam property tax, I have to my name $2.00 in the bank, and I cannot pay any of the following: the utilities for July, my life insurance, my health insurance. my credit card bill, any emergency vet care that might turn up, any food I or the cats might require, my cell phone, the bank charges at the end of the month, and my sister-in-law Jo Ann's birthday next week. By the time I see the next payment from Music Theatre International it will be at least a month from now.  And the fucking bills continue to pile up.

I cannot get hired and I cannot get arrested these days.  When my health fell apart and the foundation folded in 2013, so did my career.  I should have moved back to Ohio then.

Elmoore So sorry to hear about your problems. I went through a similar situation last year when I was working.

Thanks.  The summer is always the worst, and I cannot make a living.  I got a call from a singer I used to work with a bit.  She wanted to know if i had a chart for "Somewhere" to rent - several singers and at least one conductor I know have asked to borrow or rent charts - and I took several days to track down and get a scan for the orchestration I had done for the NYC Gay Men's Chorus over 25 years ago.  I sent her the scan, told her and her MD to adapt it and copy parts - all without charging her a cent -  and then Lanny Meyers wrote a new chart!  I assume she paid him for it.

DR FJL the part of Paul is not hard to cast - if anyone comes to auditions....which no one did....NOT ONE ACTOR FOR THE PART....

So I am stuck with no male lead....I contacted a few folks, but they all have conflicts, etc....so there you are.

No it should NOT be difficult....but everyone wants to be in the GD musicals, and that leaves NO ONE to be in the plays....

The man offered the part of the Telephone Man, declined because his wife didn't get the part of the Mother.....so there you are....

Read thru tomorrow....and two parts not cast.  I'm ready to give up...

So what was supposed to be a day off....after weeks of hell....has turned into a begging festival that takes hours and is demeaning and depressing.....

Maybe I will call Lanny Meyers....he may know someone....

Haven't done much in Las Vegas.  I  was going to see a show last night but I was pretty certain I would fall asleep since I haven't been sleeping well since I got to LA.  I played keno (in the machine, not live) and was winning for a while but then of course lost my money.  I only spent $40 so it's not so bad.

Here's what I'm going to say about "I don't appreciate the pressure."  All many of us can do is read what's posted here and make perhaps incorrect assumptions based on what we read here.  In this particular case, I read about lots of work being done, whether Loesser, Joshie, and I know there've been times when I've tried to float upcoming work only to be turned down.  I read of numerous get-togethers to see all manner of things.  I make assumptions based on what I read.  I post about something I'm involved with in NY and crickets and admonishing based on what I know most people understand as my sense of humor.  I'm gonna leave it there.  It doesn't make me happy to see anyone struggling.  It doesn't make me happy to see me struggling.

Well after six hours, we have a cast.  Paul is played by someone who is definitely NOT Robert Redford or even a RR Type....but he is a solid dependable guy....and our telephone man is the head of the local Chamber of Commerce....so that should sell some tickets....

And so the show goes on....

I will try to get a "cast photo" to post at tomorrow night's read thru...the rehearsal schedule is finished....although SISTER ACT work may cause some of it to be revised.  My assistant has said that she can handle run throughs of scenes if they have already been blocked.  I have been waiting five years for her to decide she can do that!

Interesting info about that club.  Was it different before it became Feinstein's?  And how does he get his name attached to all these clubs anyway?  Of course I understand the expense of these things - horrible, really.  But there's also expense in seeing a show and it's usually twice the amount of a club - that said, I find these prices insane.  It's not that way here in LA, where the most a cover is is twenty to twenty-five bucks.

Your shows at the Triad, which you did with Adryan, were reasonably priced, too.  That's why a lot of us could afford to come to both.

Interesting thing about the "Color Purple" musical the first time I saw it was that at intermission, the feel was so hopeless, and I asked if anyone had seen the movie because if it ends up this hopeless, that was just the wrong day for this experience, so tell me does it end uplifting for as sad as it feels now.  (It was very well done, almost too much so, but act 1 curtain came down on uncompromising despair.)

"COLOR PURPLE" SPOILER

Of course, the reassurance and spoiler requests I'd made at intermission made me stay.  Then seeing it again with the new star another time, I was ready, so the first act curtain was emotional, but I knew relief was coming in act 2.

I understand Mr. Feinstein stays involved in the club, but is not one if the actual owners.  Wiki calls it a creative alliance.

Tuesday afternoon greetings!  I spent yesterday prepping for a small household painting job and finally put the first coat of paint on just before dinner.  Earlier this summer Richard painted our front door inside and out, along with the guest closet door and the frame of our living room picture window.  That left the frame around the entry to our kitchen and the chair rail in the dining room that need to match.  I'd promised him before we went to New York that I'd paint those.  One coat's on the chair rail and tomorrow I'll finish that and start the entry frame.

His trio recordings for MPS are fascinating as the trio is him on piano, a guitar, and bass - no drums.  It's an interesting sound and I'm enjoying it, but Shearing can do little wrong.

Good news on finally casting the role, Jrand!

As much as I miss living in Ashland there are days I am glad we are here instead, especially in the winter and in the summer during fire season.  I am still on the roster for my hiking group and and just received the following email.

Much as I hate to give in to the elements, it just isn't right to encourage a bunch of "older" adults to slog up and down trails in air that has been deemed "Unhealthy."

The book was a punch in the gut several times over before a sense of peace comes over the characters at the end. I loathed the movie. Spielberg at his prettiest. His scenes were so gorgeous that you expect all scenes of domestic abuse to be artistic. It did not make for anything believable.
