Well, you've read the notes, you're winded from reading the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home like the wind.
-
It is raining again. Damn them, damn them all to hell. Hopefully it will be short-lived, the rain.
And the word of the day is: BOHEMIAN!
-
No car, but am currently listening to Brent Barrett's Kander and Ebb album, and a wonderful cd by the name of Leading Men Don't Dance. No DVD this weekend.
What's the word of the day? Or does the word of the day take the day off on Friday?
-
Oh, sorry. I jumped ahead. We Junior Members tend to do that. Part of the rhapsody of being BOHEMIAN, I guess.
-
BOHEMIAN!
You know what that means, daddy-o. It means we are beat, man, we dig poetry, man, like yeah, man.
-
Hey, man, where are all the cool cats? Dig?
BOHEMIAN!
-
Viva La Vie Boheme! You are one hep cat, bk, with a very cool group of people here on this site, daddy-o.
What's on tap for a midnight snack? And what is the dance of the night that you're gonna groove to?
-
I, for one, am very pleased to see that the word is BOHEMIAN after days of coping with phlegm and flatulence. Of course, I'm sure there are doctors for that.
-
I'm doin' the TWIST, daddy-o.
-
Let's twist again, like we did last summer.
-
In my CD player at home: nothing.
In my CD player at work: I don't remember. I got a whole bunch of new CDs and they're all at work and I don't remember what they all are.
In my DVD player: first, "Monty Python's The Meaning of Life," after that "The Taming of the Shrew" with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. After that will more than likely be Kiss Me, Kate starring the World's Sexiest Man Alive!
In my CD burner: BK's interview on "2 on the Dial" for DR Matthew.
In my VCR: a tape to tape tonight's "Star Trek: Enterprise" and "Battlestar Galactica." I remembered to put in a tape!! And I will make sure that my housemate DOES NOT touch the VCR. (Last week, he popped out the tape from one of my VCRs because he didn't know how to use it...seriously, he had to write down instructions on how to use the VCR, but he used the wrong one.)
-
It's a Twister, it's a Twister!!!
-
The iPod is on, shuffling soundtracks. Currently playing: Joe Hisaishi's Brother.
BOHEMIAN!
-
I want the rain to stop before I toddle off to the bedroom environment.
In the meantime, I'm TWISTING.
-
Just don't get your panties in bunch!
-
Or is it "Don't get your knickers in a twist" ??
-
I believe the proper word is UNDERPANTS.
-
I can't believe she of the Evil Eye is coming at eight o'clock.
-
Oh, just remembered, I picked up a 3 DVD set of Goucho Marx's You Bet Your Life, so that will be in the DVD player this weekend. This DVD set contains 18 classic episodes as well as racier moments that were edited out for broadcast.
-
The Groucho set is great - talked about at length here some months ago.
-
I can't believe she of the Evil Eye is coming at eight o'clock.
Of course, BK, the sooner you get to sleep, the more time you'll have to sleep. ::)
-
If she of the Evil Eye had a more BOHEMIAN spirit, she would saunter in at the crack of noon.
-
If I weren't such a night owl, I'd get to work at 7:00 a.m. and be able to leave by 4:00 p.m. I'm usually lucky if I get to work by 9:00 a.m. and 10:00 is becoming not too uncommon for me. FORTUNATELY, my supervisor is not strict with our department's starting times (I'm not the only one with this "problem")...as long as we keep track of everything and account for all our time accurately.
-
So, in honor of getting up early, I'm going to bed early...well, early for me. Good night!
-
But before I go, I just realized that in 9 more posts, I'll have posted 3,000 posts!! ;D
-
Good night, George. We should all toddle off to the bed environment, but as we are bohemians, we must go crash at our pads.
Later, daddy-o
-
I haven't toddled off to bed yet. I keep hoping the rain will stop. But, I'll need to get my beauty rest, man, for that is the coolest.
BOHEMIAN!
-
Baby, the rain must fall. Cool hep cats like the rain-the bongo drums sound twice as good.
C'mon along and listen to, the lullaby of Bohemia....
-
So sad to be all alone in the world.
-
Good morning DRELMORE!
-
Friday Media Check:
DVD: INTIMATE STRANGERS to be discussed in a moment.
CD: THE MUSIC MAN Original Broadway Cast Album
VCR: JULIE with Miss Doris Day soon to be released on DVD, they say.
-
Page Two Dance. 8)
-
One of the joys of HHW is reading about music and movies that I otherwise would not know anything about. I now own many DVD's and CD's that have been recommended or discussed here.
And to that I add INTIMATE STRANGERS un film de Patrice Laconte. This is a film with a plot unlike any other film I have ever seen - and I have been watching movies for almost 50 years (!) and I have forgotten few of them.
It was discussed by MR BK in his notes last week, so I am sure all of the DR's here are famliar with the plot, etc. A woman who has made an appointment with a therapist walks instead into the office of a tax accountant and begins discussing her most intimate problems with him....first briefly....then in a subsequent visit in much more detail. The accountant ends up consulting the therapist himself - the woman discovers the mistake - but neither one of them wants to discontinue the sessions. And there you are.
Now if this were an American movie with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves - well....you can just imagine!
But no, this film has a real director Leconte and two wonderful actors Fabrice Luchini as William the tax man and Sandrine Bonnaire as Anna, the woman. Other characters include her husband, a man afraid of elevators, William's "ex", his receptionist, and his ex's new boyfriend.
In French with English subtitles, lovely decor and costumes that so subtly reflect the changes in the relationship as to be nearly subliminal. and a very nice score by Pascal Esteve.
If you want something unusual and a DVD that you will want to watch more than once - I also recommend INTIMATE STRANGERS. Saying much more will spoil the joy in your discovery - but discovery is around every corner.
-
I wrote a LOT about a movie I enjoyed, because immediately afterwards, I watched a couple of other films on TCM.
There was a time, not long ago, when Miss Jane Fonda was considered one of the great actresses of her generation. If you weren't there at the time, you might only know her as the exercise woman with lots of plastic surgery, or Ted Turner's ex-wife. But at the time, I went to all her movies and enjoyed her performances a lot. Always surprising - beautiful and intelligent - she co existed with Raquel Welch, Faye Dunaway, and (for a time) Natalie Wood.
A film I saw twice when it was released un film de James Bridges THE CHINA SYNDROME was on last night. I remember thinking it was a bit melodramatic at the time and being blase about the whole thing - even though a week after its initial release - it almost came true! NOW - seeing it again - I am reminded of Jane Fonda's immense talent. It's not the BEST film in the world, but it is a group of professionals showing us something that we needed to see. And my oh my - is she beautiful.....subtle....intelligent.....acting but not letting us know she is acting....I wish she would find a great return to the screen project.
Then I watched I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHER - directed by someone discussed here a couple of days ago. Mr Gilbert Cates. And, while I am not a film director - I have to say, he did a terrible job. A scene that could have been done in 8 or 9 setups is done with 25 or 30! Hardly any two shots - all reaction shots.....and the ending is botched. I had never seen this movie....but having just seen A LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT the night before....well....this was HARD to sit through.
And now I am done with the lecture for today.
-
Good morning, DRJRand54! I check in, read the posts, get ready for the day cme back and check in, abd there you are! It's getting interesting at B&N. The new manager of the first floor, after being in insufferable bitch for the past six years as the cash/sales manager, is making life miserable for several of the first floor employees. I've accused her of unprofessional behavior in the store, but the store's manager's response was "you can't prove it," and continues to allow her to make life unpleasant. I'm not so much under the firng line since I'm only there two days, but I've had several coworkers ask me if she isn't nastier than ever these days. I only have to deal with her Saturdays, something I don't look forward to at all since the unprofessional and evil crap she pulled on me a year ago.
So, enough of the Coras in this world. I finished the "Elizabeth/Darcy" mystery, which was really rather poor. I can't imagine the audience: not good enough for the Jane Austen fans in style and tone; like the Sir John Fielding mysteries, every time I come upon an American spelling like "honor" for "honour," I'm taken out of the book (in the Fielding mysteries the narrator is an 18th-Century British teen). I also found the plot, involving characters by the author of "Sense and Sensibility," irrational and senseless! Now, I think I'll look at these Austen mysteries where Jane herself is the detective. I shudder!
I have no media report this morning. I just listened to JEEPERS CREEPERS, and I have 40 minutes before B&N. so I'm listening to some Dvorak.
-
DR elmore - sorry you didn't enjoy the mystery. Hope you have a good day at B&N.
Friday media - CD (car) - audiobook, bio of John Adams (yes, I'm still listening to this and they've just now signed the Declaration of Independence!); DVD from Netflix - Angels in America, part 1.
-
I am listening to BBC Radio 3 live. I just tuned in so I don't know what's being played as I came in on the middle of a piece.
Iris, I'm jealous of your scoring tickets to Spamalot. It's the one show to which I'm having trouble getting tickets. Not trouble, really. I just would like to see it before May or June and I also don't see any discounts. I know it's "next Producers" according to the buzz but I still don't want to pay $100 or $75 for a seat. I may just have to bite the bullet and get a ticket.
Later, Bohemians!

Dear BK:Re my e-dictionary
It’s a collabration of The Catalogue House, which is a mail order house that have been proposing a lot of oroginal nifty goods so far, and Sharp, which is a famous electric company, for a liquid crystal display/television. And it is unfortunate that they sell their goods only in Japan.
-
DR JOSE: Where did you audition for Universal Studios Japan? In the US or in Osaka or any other part of Japan? You know quite well about Japan and about Japanese stuffs, don't you?
-
I finally watched “ The Phantom Of The Opera”. It’s a few months since many DRs speached about it on this board…. The movie gave me gooseflesh the whole story through as it was charged with dramatic tension.
Do you remember Christina’s dress?
-
In the CD player @work "Steve Ashley- Everyday Lives"
In the tape player in the car "The Reptile Room" one of the series of Unfortunate Events children's books, the Vixter thought it would be fun if we listened to it together in the car
In the DVD Player at home: LOTR Return of the King discs 1- 4
and "Support YOur Local Sherriff" in tray 5
VCR- I think its empty
CD at home - War of the Worlds

Last night Charles Pogue mentioned:
"Does anyone remember the story of Bongo the Circus Bear that was a Disney cartoon (Hell, I'm posting...I'm not getting bitch-slapped)."
Sure do. It was in FUN AND FANCY FREE, a Disney compilation feature which featured Disney's voicing Mickey Mouse for the last time (in the "Mickey and the Beanstalk" sequence). It's available on DVD.
-
Good Morning!
It's a bright, sunny day here in Fairfax, VA. And it's cold! It's only supposed to get up into the mid-30's - after some very nice days in the 50s and lower 60s. But, cold doesn't really bother me too much - especially with the way the heat works in my parents' house. ;)
-
As for Media Check...
I didn't bring back anything new this past week from Richmond, and I still have some discs from the past two weeks sitting in the "to be played" pile, so...
I'll be baking in a few, and I guess I can put some music on while I'm futzing in the kitchen.

DR Hisaka - When I was on tour with USJ, sadly, we did not audition anywhere in Japan. Instead, we had auditions in Australia (Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney), and then the US (Charlotte, NC; Orlando, FL; New York, NY; Chicago, IL; and Los Angeles, CA). All in a span of about six and a half weeks - quite the whirlwind - but I had a wonderful time. And I even got to meet a few DRs along the way including DRs Tomovoz and Colin in Melbourne, some DRs in NYC, and even DRs Jay and our very own BK in LA.
One of these days, I'm hoping to make it over to Japan. I do love the culture - and the food! ;) Oh, and I also enjoy origami. I usually fold during shows - it keeps my fingers warm.

So sad to hear about the passing of Arthur Miller. -And I was just about to post the link to the article on Playbill.com about his ailing health...
"Death Of A Salesman" still has to be THE play that got me interested in plays - as opposed to musicals.
To paraphrase a line from that play: Attention has been paid.
-
****
-
Thanks for the Arthur Miller info, DR Ben. That makes me mad because I had been thinking any year now he'd get the Nobel Prize for Literature that he so richly deserved. It never happened. Another glaring lapse in their honors list.
-
DR Jane - As for the strawberries... I looked at two stores for a decent carton of strawberries yesterday, but couldn't find any that were fresh-looking enough. They probably restocked the shelves last night in preparation for the weekend - like most stores do - so... Ah, well... The White Chocolate Cheesecake(s) were quite delicious even without them.
:)

Friday Media Check:
CD - THE FROGS (new Broadway cast recording)
DVD - THE MATCHMAKER
DVR - last week's QUEER EYE FOR THE STRAIGHT GUY
DREAMCHILD
last night's WILL & GRACE

OK. I need to head downstairs and start measuring out various amounts of flour, sugar, vanilla, almonds, chocolate chips... Oh, and, course, butter! -Unsalted, of course!
Laters...
-
I meant to mention this yesterday after DR JRand raved about LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO NIGHT (which I totally agreed with). The cast was given a rare Best Acting prize in tandem at the Cannes Film Festival. Richly deserved.

Iam sorry to hear this, I have worked on productions of "Death of A Saleman", "The Crucible" and "All My Sons", the Crucible was always the one that resonated with me the most ...........wondering how I would have behaved in the shoes of the accused

I have a copy of Bongo the Circus Bear on VHS
Yes, Disney was very smart. It clipped sequences out of its features and sold them as separate video releases. But it was not ever a separate theatrical film to my knowledge.
For years, the only way you could get THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS and THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW was as separate vidoeotapes. I think THE ADVENTURES OF ICHABOD AND MR. TOAD was first released as a feature (the way it was made) on laserdisc. And, of course, it's available now on DVD as a feature film.

Yesterday, DR Pogue asked:
Does anyone remember the story of Bongo the Circus Bear that was a Disney cartoon (Hell, I'm posting...I'm not getting bitch-slapped).
As a matter of fact, much earlier in the day I had posted:
Bongo! What a fun word! It's quite fun and fancy free!
(Oh! A Dinah Shore reference!)
I guess I was too obscure with that post. Bongo, based on a story by Sinclair Lewis, was part of the feature film Fun and Fancy Free, with narration supplied by Dinah Shore.
-
She of the Evil Eye is here, but I tell you I just am not in the mood to clear out, given the torrential downpour that has been going on non-stop since midnight last night. It woke me up at three, I didn't get back to sleep until five, and she arrived at eight. Add 'em up, Bobby, add 'em up - not enough sleeparooni.
That said - BOHEMIAN!
We can only pray that the stop-gap measures they took on the roof seven weeks ago are working and that we will have no leakage in the bedroom floor area, which, despite six weeks of fine weather, they have not attended to yet.

Nope, they haven't fixed the floor. A guy came out to look at it four weeks ago, and said he'd be able to do it in one day. Nothing heard for three weeks, then they called and asked when I'd be here for someone else to come look at it - a real professional flooring person. I said anytime. Nothing heard since then. Meanwhile my dresser sits quite a bit away from the wall it's supposed to be against, and I can barely squeeze between it and the bed to get across the room. That's the only thing that's physically off in the room - I mean, you can't tell there's a problem with the floor just by looking.
-
Oh, and my two favorite Arthur Miller plays, for personal reasons, are The Crucible and A View from the Bridge. I also really like A Memory of Two Mondays.
-
I know I have to vamoose or, at the very least, vamelephant, but the rain is pouring and I just don't want to go out into it. I might sashay over to Du-Par's and just sit there for an hour - maybe have a sweet roll. Yeah, man, that's what I may do.

...FUN AND FANCY FREE, a Disney compilation feature which featured Disney's voicing Mickey Mouse for the last time (in the "Mickey and the Beanstalk" sequence). It's available on DVD.
It turns out that Disney gave voice to Mickey once more, during the daily introductions for The Mickey Mouse Club. Some of this has been documented on the tin box Mickey Mouse in Living Color Volume Two. Of course, you're right about Mickey and the Beanstalk being his final appearance in a feature film/short.
I don't know about anyone else, but I love the fact that the current voice for Mickey, Wayne Allwine, is the real-life mate to the voice of Minnie, Russi Taylor.

This sounds like it inspired an American movie called "The Shrink is In," but with Courteney Cox and David Arquette (I rented it :P). I haven't seen "Intimate Strangers," but I think it's safe to assume that "TSII" is nowhere near as good. Here's the plot from IMDb (I didn't correct the typo):
Samantha, a travel writer suffering from claustrophobia, agoraphobia, and a whole host of other phobias, isn't exactly lucky in her romantic fate. But when her pshycologist suffers a major mental breakdown, she secretly poses as the missing shrink in an effort to turn Michael, her new neighbor, towards her and away from his girlfriend. Through her chase, Samantha meets the happy-go-lucky magazine salesman, Henry. What follows is a series of events that lead to the one question Samantha has to face: Is she thinking with her heart... or with her mind?

The Bohemian Grove is very well known; the meetings are better described as "private" than "secret," although the latter word contributes to the mystique of the place. Armistead Maupin included the Bohemian Grove rituals as part of volume five of Tales of the City: Significant Others, and earlier, in the original volume, had one of his characters take Anna Madrigal to the Grove site on a tryst.
Edgar switched easily into the role of White Rabbit. His Alice blinked her wide blue eyes at him while he showed her the Grove Stage.
"You performed here?"
"I stopped the show once as a Valkyrie."
"In drag, Edgar?"
"Hell...the Greeks did it."
"The Greeks did a lot of things."
He smiled. "Get off my back, will you?"
"That's what the Greeks used to say."
Edgar slapped her on the behind and chased her up the River Road, ignoring the tightness that had begun to grow in his chest.

Books: I just finished re-reading Patrick Kuk's The Last Days of Haute Cuisine, and have handed it over to der Brucer. I found it even more interesting the second time, having read other books about American dining in the interim. Der Brucer has already caught an awkward phrase at the start of the second chapter, ever alert to typos and grammar as he is.
DVDs: Der B has been watching Secret Window (which he enjoyed) and 28 Days Later (which he didn't). He's got season one of MacGyver to keep him occupied, if it's ever a slow news day. I've got Groundhog Day on tap, but the green gun on the main TV is going out on us; I realize the film is set during the winter, but I'd still rather see it in full color.

Political Bohemian Rhapsody...check it out....

My two favorite Miller plays are Death of a Salesman and The Crucible. The recent Broadway revival was particularly powerful for me and reminds of the depths to which some are plummeting in this country. His stand against the witch hunts in the 50s and his refusal to agree to cancel his appointment if the head of the committee investigating him could be photographed with Marilyn Monroe (to whom he was married at the time) is a great moment (for me) in mid-1950s history.

Not too long ago, but most definitely before you were born, the world was quite a different place. In a distant land called Bohemia, Cats ruled over all: good King Furr governed with a firm but kind paw, Court Scientist Sir Walter Whisker wrote learned papers on “The Human – myth or reality?” Prince Scratch strolled the lush gardens dreaming of his future reign, and of course Lady Purrla thought herself the most beautiful kitty at the ball.
Cats in costume, panoramic pullouts, and exquisite historical settings. This is a picture book like no other; fantastical, funny, sumptuous and surprising. But beware, - once you’ve entered the palaces, ballrooms and theaters of the Bohemian Cats, your own feline companions may never look quite the same again...

My cousin and her husband are in town today, and I told my mother I'd go over and have lunch with all of them. So I must do that. I still need to catch the late night posts from yesterday and this morning's.
Valley of the Dolls is still in my VCR from the other night.
DVD: The 4th season of the Sopranos (which we are slowly plowing through) and the 3rd season of SOAP.
I WISH the new Michael Buble CD were in my CD player, but I haven't had the money for it. AH, the joys of unemployment!
In the immortal words of Jose, "Laters!"

Have to be more careful how I read things around here...I thought it said "blurry streaks on underpants." :o

Hello again--
Which of you wonderful people was it who can resize a pic for my profile? The one I have should be the right size, but it says it's to big.
Was it you, Matt? Jack?

Small world, ain't it? BK, years ago, The Lovely Wife, Julieanne, (and maybe me as well...though I don't recall)was in the theatre department at the University of Kentucky with Joanie Rue and Joanie's sister. Sara, I believe is Joan's daughter (I know she has a daughter out here in a series). Joanie is currently on the administrative staff of the Theatre Department there and Julieanne and I have a great deal of contact with her because she has been instrumental in perserving the theatre's legacy and history which we are also involved with and have supplied her with many photos and old programmes and articles, etc. Joanie is a lovely person and it has been great working with her...because she was there at approximately same time we were and so shares many of the same memories of the various professors and shows. Joanie is also a very modest person. Throughout my contact with her, she never once mentioned she had a daughter out here in Hollywood, I found it out through a mutal friend.

It's comfort food season in our house. Last night I made chicken and dumplings, one of those "throw everything into the pot, let simmer, then add the dumplings for the last twelve minutes" deals.
Tonight, at der B's request, I'm making pork chops with cabbage, apples, and taters. Savoy cabbage, of course, shredded. Apples, onion, and taters cubed. And apple cider for the liquid. Seasoned with some caraway. Another "throw everything together and simmer" dish.
-
Does anyone remember the story of Bongo the Circus Bear that was a Disney cartoon (Hell, I'm posting...I'm not getting bitch-slapped).
"A bear likes to say it with a (bitch-)slap!"
Now, can someone tell me how to do a quote from a previous day on the board? I fudged it here, and the time is wrong, because the message number is wrong.
-
I usually do a cut and paste to and from a notepad or Word doc, and then surround the quoted material with a {quote} and an {/quote}, using the brackets in place of those strange parens I don't know the real name of (but they're on the same key as the brackets).
-
And perhaps a dance as well
BOHEMIAN NATIONAL POLKA

Der Brucer was out feeding the birds and squirrels, and getting a lot of attention from the dogs, particularly from Fletcher. When he returned inside, der B found Fletcher waiting for him, standing over all of the leashes, which he had taken down from the side table.
Der Brucer took the hint, and they are now on a nice little walk along the street. Only now the other dogs, particularly Bonnie and Buster, want to go for a walk as well.
I guess it's time for me to put on my Bohemian underpants and other warm clothing and get some exercise.

BOHEMIAN: The Bohemian slunk in his chair at the cafe table, tilted his beret, sipped his absinthe with his cigarette still dangling from his lip, and, with a louche expression, examined his painting.
Sherlock Holmes thought back on the case of the Bohemian Scandal and Irene Adler, "the" woman.

DR KERRY send me your picture and I will do it for you. DR GEORGE is an expert as well!
Mr. Arthur Miller. I played a bad, bad man in THE CRUCIBLE (and eventually got set out on the high road) - and I like all of his work, but my favorite is ALL MY SONS.
-
Marion Ross in the television show BROOKLYN DREAMS said:
"The Village. You can't go live in The Village. Everyone there is a Bohemian. People living together not married. Boys with boys, girls with girls. Dogs with cats!"
-
DR GEORGE thanks for the warning.....err....information about that Courtney Cox-David Arquette movie.
-
Who can forget that most audacious of pop tunes, Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"?
A bit o'erplayed perhaps, but still more creativity in that song than 95% of pop music from the last 15 years.
-
When I want to quote a message from a previous day, I click on "reply" (not quick reply) copy and paste the message, and then click on the "quotes" icon. Then I usually just write "DR jose said:" above it.

I could stay out no longer.
I'm glad we have truly achieved BOHEMIA here at haineshisway.com.
I had a butter horn at Du-Par's, whatever the HELL that is. It was sort of nauseating. Naturally I ate it all up.
Then, to pass the time, I decided to drive to Burbank and Balboa to check out Amber's. Naturally, Burbank Blvd. was closed on account of the rain.
She of the Evil Eye is still here, but she'll be done very soon.
-
BTW, I don't watch LESS THAN PERFECT too often. But I've seen Sara Rue on it (and on numerous talk shows). She is really funny especially on the talk shows. And ALWAYS comes across as sweet and charming.
-
To quote, I simply click on "Quote" in the menu bar above the post I want quoted. That brings up the reply box with the quote already inserted. Then you just go to the end of the quote and start typing and voila.
-
I have seen Sara Rue for a bit on one of those "celebrity" poker shows. She is very funny and an OKAY poker player.

Political Bohemian Rhapsody...check it out....
Oh, but the Time Warp (http://www.flowgo.com/funpages/view.cfm/5809) is even more fun.
I saw several fun Flash satires at election time. Don't know how I missed these.

DR WFO wanted to quote a previous day's post.

Rodzinski, great minds think alike. During my usual bout of insomnia, I posted something about the rhapsody of being a Bohemian,a reference to the pop hit by Queen. Isn't there a musical in London based on the songs by Queen at the moment?
DR Ben- I know, tickets to Spamalot are impossible to find. I think it's a combination of all of the hype surrounding the show and the large groups of Monty Python fans. It also got terrific reviews in Chicago. This is the first time in ages that I was not able to get a discount on a Broadway show.
Vixmom-the photo of the Bohemian cat is hilarious!

Yes, I can also help. :) I'm at work, so it won't be quick, but I can do it.

I'm more interested in how to get the link to the quote to work.
As a mathematician, I can tell you that [ and ] are brackets, { and } are braces. Commonly called "square brackets", resp. "curly brackets".
And that bar on top of the square root, or the bar in a fraction is called a vinculum.

Yeah, I cut and paste, too.

I have not stopped listening to this cd by Brent Barrett, the Kander and Ebb Album. He does the most beautiful rendition of Sometimes A Day Goes By from Woman of The Year. It actually brings tears to my eyes.
DRelmore, such lovely orchestrations-bravo!
This would make a perfect gift for Valentine's Day.

MBarnum and Jose-sorry about the Steve-George mix up. :-[ A house overlooking the ocean sounds very, very nice. :D

DR WFO, check my other post on page 4. I think the only way to get the "quotes" is to click on "reply" and then paste and copy the quote. And then click on the quote icon. It won't attribute your post to anyone. So you will need to do that.

I am a frenzy unto myself
-
I resized a couple of TCB's photos what turned out OK, but I didn't do such a great job with my own current pic, and DR George did the honors (and beautifully, too). Since JRand spoke first, I'm glad he will do it for you, DR Kerry, but I would have been glad to try.
-
A Bohemian frenzy

After all my Grandma WAS born and raised Czechslovkia
-
I had every intention of watching THE MATCHMAKER today, but CSI: MIAMI came in the mail today, and since I just saw Shirley Booth in COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA a few days ago, I'll take a Booth break, and dive into this boxed set of TV episodes.
-
Is any DR here at HHW familiar with a couple of detectives called Cool & Lam created by A A Fair aka Erle Stanley Gardner?
-
I also finished all of the extra features on the third disc of GONE WITH THE WIND today. Still one more disc to go in that set, but I think most of that last disc is the separate docs on Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, and the Olivia DeHavilland reminiscence.
-
Jrand54, I know OF the Bertha Cool/Donald Lam series but have never read any of them.
-
Oh, and Jrand, you wrote eloquently of Intimate Strangers. I'm gonna watch it again next week. I've ordered two more Leconte films - quite a few are available in France, but only two of them have English subtitles.
The rain is relentless and needs to STOP. So far, so good, though, leak-wise.
BOHEMIAN!
I shall now sally forth to pick up mail and packages.
-
Well, I am currently reading a book I did not choose to read: "...Owen Meany" by J. Irving. I promised to read it for The Gal's birthday, and it is quite frankly killing me. I'm sorry if any of you are fans, but I don't like the kid and THE WAY HE TALKS IN ALL CAPS. I gotta finish it to get on to the Kritzer books.
In the CD player is Electric Lucifer, Book 2 by Bruce Haack, who was a real genius of electronic music. He made many albums for kids back in the 70s, but the two Electric Lucifer albums were really dark and strange. Fans of the vocorder need apply here.
Soon to watch film: Incubus, whose lead actor (besides Shatner) killed Mickey Rooney's wife and then killed himself shortly after filming wrapped.
-
I shall now sally forth to pick up mail and packages.
Why not Dick and Jane forth as well as long as you're at it?
-
I just received, unsolicited, from MTI, the "Musicals from the Disney Collection" sample CD.
Let's see, now you can do something called "Aladdin Jr." which I'm sure takes out the more disturbing adult themes that haunted children who saw the regular "Aladdin".
-
DR Rodzinski, willyou and your "other half" be joing ing the HHW partay at PennyO's on March 19th?
-
Yes, I plan on it. Do you think I need to reserve seats right away?
-
Well, I sallied forth but there were no packages and there was no mail.
-

Could you please post the directions to your house here, and what time will you be serving?
Well, you turn off Highway One at Happy Harry's Drug Store....
Y'know, I've always been a little leery about a chain of drug stores called "Happy Harry's."
-
Greetings from DR Jay. He has been spending much time away from his computer - Job interviews etc.
-
Meant to mention that my favorite Miller plays are THE CRUCIBLE and A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE.
However, in reading his obit a little bit ago, I was reminded that he also won an Emmy for that masterful TV-movie PLAYING FOR TIME which I thought was simply brilliant.
-
I am, obviously, back from taking Bonnie and Buster for a walk. Truth to tell, it was a RUN!!! They just wanted to take off, lickety-split, with me at the other end of their leashes holding on and moving my legs as quick as I could after them.
After the walk run, we all settled in for a nice nap, Bonnie and Buster along one side of me, and Fletcher on the other side, making it impossible for me to move. I don't know where Marty and Mikey were; I assume they were in with der Brucer.
Such is the frantic life I lead.
-
Thanks MR BK - I try.
Yes, DRCP - those are the characters. I just found out today that a television pilot was filmed in 1958 featuring the detectives. Billy Pearson was Donald Lam and Benay Venuta was Bertha Cool. Miss Allison Hayes played a supporting role as Evaline Dell.

What is this? A slow newsday in HHW-Land?
;)
Good Afternoon!
I just wanted to pop in before I head in for tonight's show - only five more performances to go! -Not that I'm counting or anything like that. *And in the weirdness that is DC Theatre, we're only 48% full tonight - at least as of Wednesday. Otherwise, we've been practically at overflow the rest of the week, and the rest of the weekend is practically SRO. In any case...
Final count: 4 dozen Crispy Chocolate Chippers, 5 dozen Cantuccini (almond Biscotti), 4 dozen Oatmeal-Chocolate-Chip-Pecan-Toffee Cookies, and 4 dozen Not-Your-Average Peanut Butter Cookies.
....And I managed to get my one hour workout in, and a trip to the cake supply store (I needed boxes and cake circles), and the grocery store (I was running dangerously low on maple syrup and light brown sugar!). ;)
WHEW!!!!!
So, I shall catch up on today's posts once I'm back from the show, although I sense I'll be baking a cake - or two - when I get back tonight.
-I'm basically cleaning out my pantry here so I don't have to lug all of it back to Richmond. And in the process, I'm fattening up providing my cast and crew with treats. -And we're not even up to Closing Night yet!?!?!?!
OK - I must dash away, dash away onward - whatever that means? -Where the heck did that come from?!?!?!
Laters...
-
Back from being sick and not completly recovered.
Been watching Night Court Season 1.
Listing to the 2500 songs or so on my I Pod on suffle play.
-
Did you mean Soufflé play DR Michael?
Hope your road to full recovery is speedy.
-
Well, I'm back from Barnes & Noble and a wonderful dinner at Artie's. Around 4:45 this afternoon, Miss "Jewish Thighs on Broadway" herself showed up , visited with us clerks for around 15 minutes and then she and I took ourselves to Arties, where Miss PennyO had chicken in a pot, which looked great, smelled delightful, and tasted divine. I had matzoh ball soup, potato pancakes and applesauce, which was quite wonderful, and Artie's is very generous with their pickles and cole slaw.
Chris Meloni was in the store today, and yesterday I met Robbie Benson (voice of the Beast) and his lovely wife Karla DeVito at the Rodgers & Hammerstein offices. I heard three wonderful songs from a show they're writing, and their vocals were fantastic.
-
My alma mater, The University of Michigan, today lost one of its most accomplished and beloved alumni, Arthur Miller. In tribute: "Sing to the colors that float in the light: Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!"
-
Back from being sick and not completly recovered.
Another out-of-towner who has 5 weeks to recover before our big get together for Penny's show in New York! Feel better, Michael.
-
Must be siesta time. Soon Miss Tammy Minoff and friend will be here and we're supposedly going to eat Thai food.
-
Evening all!
I’m finely on the mend. Again. I guess what can’t be cured must be endured. Sigh. I’m only praying that this doesn’t happen when I’m in NY.
On the bright side, I was reading about NY in March and learned that you can go ICE SKATING at Rockefeller Center! I am SO there! I have always wanted to try ice skating!
I may even do a triple lutz! I may not mean to do a triple lutz but I might do one just the same.
Are there any plans on the book signing yet? Is it Friday or Saturday? I only ask because I want to start planning what I’m going to do on what days. I’ve already decided to go see “Fiddler on The Roof” Friday night. My “must” see/do’s (besides the book signing/get together) are go the museum, go to the zoo/Central Park again, go ice skating and ride the subway.
I think I can spend Monday going to the zoo/Central Park in the morning, the Museum in the afternoon and as there are no shows on Monday night, maybe the Planetarium.
If the book signing is Saturday, I shall go ice skating on Friday and maybe do Grand Central Station as well.
Anyway, just thought I’d check on how everyone else’s plans are shaping up.
-
I'm at work, but not for long. Tonight, I'm going to the show Closer Than Ever that my friend Nona (who died on Wednesday :'() was in. A friend of mine saw the show last night and said that they did a real good job with how they did the tribute to her.
I'm going to eat dinner first, then the show. I'm sure I'll have some sort of report when I get back.
-
Now that I've had time to go back and read some other posts, I see I am not the only one under the weather. So sorry to hear that you were not feeling well DR Michael Shayne. I hope that your doing much better.
-
Sure Jose--
First it was cakes for everyone else. Now it's cookies. What next?!?!? Better that your theatre friends should get all the goodies, and the people who really matter get nothing. ***sigh***** :-\
-
BONGO
-
I forgot to say it yesterday.
-
Did everyone go on vacation? And what is this malarky about Jay being too busy to be at his computer? Me no believe. Me think it is something else.
I'll be on my way to eat shortly, so keep the home fries burning until my returning. I want some fine reading matter.
And lest anyone forgets - BOHEMIAN!
-
Danise - Are you staying at the Muse or at the Milford Plaza? If you're at the Muse, you'll be pretty close to Rockefeller Center. I'm staying at the Comfort Inn-Midtown, on 46th St., right across the street from the Muse. When I stayed in the same hotel in October, I walked over to RC a couple of times.
As far as skating is concerned, I used to do a lot of it when growing up in Michigan. Haven't been on skates for well over 30 years, though. Watching is more my speed now.
-
Watching the two TREKKER films on Showtime. I saw the first one a few years ago, but this is the first time I am seeing the "update" movie. Interesting. And fun.
-
DR KERRY send me your pic for re-sizing.
-
DR Elmore- In the "strange but true" department, I had chicken in the pot at Artie's 2 nights ago. My friend had matzoh ball soup, potato pancakes, and applesauce. I love that deli. May I assume that your Barnes and Noble is the one across the street from Artie's on the corner?
Vixmom-thanks so much for the photos. They put a great big bohemian smile on my face!
-
DR Iris - Congratulations on your recent no-longer-a-newbie status! Will you be at the get-together for Penny's show on March 19?
-
Larry, you didn’t have rice pudding?
Jose, please send me your peanut butter cookie recipe.
-
We have a very nice dinner in town this evening at Tabu, the Nuevo Latin restaurant which is one of our local favorites. In fact Penny has eaten there a couple of times with us. They have a new chef and I was a bit nervous, but the food was better than ever.
Now we are off to watch something.
-
Oh, boy, did STAR TREK: ENTERPRISE spring a big surprise in the last few moments of tonight's episode. Won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, but it looks like (at least from that one scene) that they had a strong indication that this was going to be their last season weeks ago when this episode was filmed.
-
DR Elmore, was Chris Meloni at B&N shopping personally or were they filming his series on location in the store?
-
Watching the early episodes from CSI:MIAMI reminded me that Kim Delaney was on the show for a few episodes before leaving the show abruptly. It never did come out exactly why she left the show. Does anyone know for sure?
-
DR Michael Shayne, did we know you were sick? ANyway, hope you continue to get better. Did you ever get your HDTV questions ironed out?
-
Media check:
DVD player: Seven Brides For Seven Brothers (one of two DVDs I own)
CD player in the car: Jason Graae Live at the Cinegrill
It has been raining since yesterday. I think that's all I have to say today.
-
That's it? Eight posts since I left at seven? Oh, well.
-
So, at 9:52 we have a WUSSBURGER attack. I ask you.
We had Thai food, and I was reasonably good about not overeating. But, then Tammy and I went to Stanley's and had huge desserts and now I cannot even move.
-
Well, AOL is being retarded again, so it's Safari for me.
-
Ten o'clock and I'm the only denizen on the board. Woe is me, woe is me.
You wild BOHEMIANS.
-
AOL was acting up for me as well. Just think of it, bi-coastal misbehavior! :P
-

:o I haven't watched LAST week's Enterprise, yet. A woman that I work with taped it and is going to make me a copy. Should I (do I need to) wait to see it or is tonight's episode the start of a new 3-episode story??
-
The production of Closer Than Ever that I saw tonight was very good. They made an announcement at the top of the show about Nona (that she died on Wednesday) and they also said that some of the songs that she was to have sung would be sung by men ("Life Story" and "Patterns") and that it wasn't done for humor. The parts that were supposed to be funny were funny. People laughed and I heard a few sniffles. They added four extra people to sing songs that Nona was supposed to have sung. They also projected photos of Nona (from earlier in the run) during those songs. It was very well done.
-
Well, it's been a long day (a How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying reference), and I'm tired. I also have to get up early in the morning, so I'm turning in. Good night all!
-
Just watched THE BUDDY HOLLY STORY on TCM. Gary Busey did a nice job - and I really like the recreation of the last concert....NOT the guy playing The Big Bopper.....but everything else.
Not historically accurate - my favorite recording of the final concert is on that London cast CD of BUDDY - I saw the cast do the song on the old Joan Rivers morning talk show....what fun.
-
Buddy Holly was such a talent. I remember all his Coral recordings on that bright orange label. I would always play them when I went to my cousin's house.
I was eight years old when he died and I remember everyone talking about it.....and the rest is rock and roll.
-
Well, I see denizens. Perhaps a few denizens will deign to post.
It's still pouring rain here.
-
I'm catching up! I'm catching up!
-
Maybe some of that rain will make it to Delaware. I haven't had enough winter yet; it's too early for spring.
::)
-
I deign, I deign.
Just woke up from a paralyzing sleep on the couch.
Was watching the film "Broken Lizard's Club Dread" which has been on HBO a lot lately and is compulsively watchable. I can see why it was a flop. It doesn't deign to be a clear-cut spoof of slasher films. It actually IS a slasher film with genuine gory violence, but also some really off-kilter humor. The Broken Lizard gang is pretty likable, but this film is carried by Bill Paxton's hilarious turn as a Jimmy Buffet-like stoner who runs a resort based on royalties from his song "Pina Colada-burgh".
-
Whew! I'm caught up! And it's still "today"!!!
-
BK et al - et vince et roger - AOL's embedded web browser is particularly buggy in the Mac version. As I've suggested before, just open a separate IE or Safari window anytime you want to surf. The Bookmark function in both IE and Safari are easy to set up, and if you're accessing the web via an ISP, by using the IE or S (or Firefox) you aren't "middle-manning" it with AOL's server - and internet filters. I also just like the extra screen real estate I get with a separate browser window. -And on Mac, if you take advantage of the Expose feature, it's very easy - and cool looking - switching between applications. -Oh, and I'm also growing accustom to Mac's iChat feature - which is basically AOL's AIM on steroids. ;)

BOHEMIAN!
Last chance for BOHEMIAN. New word coming soon.
I'm so full I cannot even describe how uncomfortable I feel.
-
New notes up in fifteen count them fifteen minutes.
-
DR Jane - I'll be sure and post the Not-Your-Average Peanut Butter Cookie recipe once I'm back in Richmond. I came across the recipe in Pam Anderson's book, "CookSmart". It's a very easy recipe, and, like a lot of recipes I've made a number of times, I just keep a Post-It with the ingredients (and respective amounts) in my "file" when I travel. -And I'm not sure where the Post-It is right now.
-
The daily discussions haven't been below 8 pages since January 2. Must.. get.. to... 8!
-
Hey, one wonders if we shall be getting a new food of the day tomorrow. And what will it be if so!
-
La vie Boheme!
-
Yes, tomorrow is Food Day and I, for one, can't wait to partake of the food of the day.
-
JoseSPiano-
Fax me a cookie, please.

I just started a new DVD - All in a Night's Work with Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine. I've never seen it before. It's directed by Joseph Anthony of The Matchmaker and The Rainmaker fame. It looks cute. When the main titles started, I heard the first four notes of music and I said, Andre Previn. Then I thought, has Previn ever done a Paramount film from that period, when he was exclusively at MGM? Then the music continued and I said, Andre Previn or an incredible sound-alike. The music credit finally came on - Andre Previn. My ear never fails me.

Yes, JOSE, just where ARE the cookies and the biscotti, you bad boy.

OH!
Good Evening! Good Morning!
We had a fun show tonight. Let's just say the light at the end of tunnel is burning clear and bright!
;)
The cookies went over very well. It was interesting watching which types were more popular than the others. The peanut butter cookies were actually the first ones to disappear tonight - that was a first. Usually it's the Oatmeal-Chocolate-Chip-Pecan-Toffee ones. But the Peanut Butter Cookies really went over well tonight. There were lots of contented smiles as soon as people took their first bite of them. -And that made me smile too.
:D
Once I got home, I went ahead and prepped the cake I'm making tomorrow. I have one final order for the German Chocolate Cake I've been making. One of the actresses wants to take it back to NYC with here. So, I made the coconut filling/icing, toasted the pecans, chopped the pecans (the pecans will be stirred into the filling/icing right before I assemble the cake), and I got my mise en place in place. The chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, flour, sugars, salt and butter are all measured out into various bowls, and covered with plastic wrap. All I have to do in the morning, is just cream the butter and sugars, melt the chocolate/cocoa mixture with some boiling water, then combine it all with some sour cream, pour into the prepared pans and bake at 350 for about 35 minutes. And I'm hoping to get this all done by 11:00, so that I can assemble the cake right before I leave for the theatre at 1:00.
Oh, and since the filling used four egg yolks, I went ahead and used three of the whites and made meringue kisses - little meringue cookies with milk chocolate chips in them. And very easy to cook once all the dollops of meringue and chocolate chips are dolloped onto the parchment paper covered cookie sheets. Once you pop them into the preheated 350 oven, you turn the oven off and leave them there for at least two hours - or overnight. *And while the oven was preheating, I used the time and electricity to toast the pecans.
OH!
DR Jennifer - I timed my egg whites tonight - Six minutes max.

Speaking of Dean and Shirley, have you ever seen "What a Way to Go"? They show this on FOX Movie Channel now and again and it is an unheralded classic. She is SO good in that and SO sexy.
That had to be one of the most coveted roles an actress ever got. Playing the wife to Dick Van Dyke, Robert Mitchum, Paul Newman, Dino, Gene Kelley... someone else.
Then she must have like 600 costume changes in the thing. The color is magnificent, the humor black.
Not available on any home format though.

Last call for BOHEMIAN! I'm doing the MAMBO ITALIANO, trying to get rid of this heavy feeling.
