Well, you've read the notes, the notes have rained on your parade, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home from the rain in Spain, which, by the way (BTW, in Internet lingo), stays mainly on the plain.
-
And the word of the day is: NINCOMPOOP!
-
Which, of course, is POOPMOCNIN, spelled backwards.
-
Well, as I was trying post "yesterday" - I think I hit Post just as the sight was turning over... Thankfully, I hit Command-C to Copy said post which now follows:
Oh, and I finally caught up on some of today's news in the past hour too.
Sadly, WETA, the public radio station in DC, decided at last night's board meeting to go to an all news/talk format starting February 28. Despite there being many speakers at the board meeting last night against the then-proposed change. Heck, they even had a petition signed by many prominent musical figures.
Ah, well... I guess which membership I know I'm not renewing this year...
:(
-
Hey, now THAT'S some notes.
It was exciting getting it to 8 pages, because after posting about "What a Way To Go!" My MAC would not reload anything at all, and I thought all was lost, but came back to find the magic number had been achieved. And it was an honest achievement.
Hey, thanks for the great news about "What A Way to Go!" being on DVD. For exactly a month now, it has been out and nobody told me. That is one of those impossible to figure why it was never out on video with that cast. There is no other husband, but Robert "Bob" Cummings plays the shrink to good effect.
I think I had to take some poopmocnin for strep throat once.
-
I do have to laugh - a couple of very errant and truant people around here have been posting regularly on ratm, where they both have been reviled time and again by a certain poster there. Go know. As I always say, people come, people go, like Grand Hotel.
I am going to presume that Jay will now be MIA along with Dan-in-Toronto.
What a shame, really, but I don't profess to understand these things.
-
The iPod is on, shuffling beautiful soundtrack themes. Currently up is Joe Hisaishi's Brother.
-
And might I just add - NINCOMPOOP!
-
I'm trying to think of a time where a radio station has changed to a better format...hmmm... no, it is always worse.
A good rule of thumb: If I find a radio station I like, it is one month away from changing to some lousy different format.
-
BK, what is ratm...?
-
I'm doing the PONY now. And the SWIM. Some would say that makes me a NINCOMPOOP. I say it marks me cool.
-
OH!!!
And the local NBC affiliate did a feature story for Valentine's Day during the 5:00 News that focused on Men getting "Brazils" for Valentine's Day. I literally sat there with my mouth wide open. There was a definite air of tongue-in-cheekness to the piece, but they interviewed an aesthetician who is known in the DC area as the "Queen of Waxing". They even showed one guy on the table having the procedure done - with the doctor's table strategically placed. I have to say I was very impressed with whomever did the copy for the piece - who knew there were so many euphemisms for the male hair growth below the belt!?!?!?
:o
And I also have to give major props to the female newscaster who was reading the lead in and lead out for the story with a straight face! Now that's talent!
*But, apparently, men getting "Brazils" is an "in" thing right now. They showed the appointment book for the office, and it was totally booked. About 20% male clientele. Even a waiting list for today!
However, my favorite comment came from one woman who was interviewed/asked about her thoughts on the new fad. Her negative response was something along the line of, "Well, I wouldn't like it. One just has certain expectations when looking down there."
;D
-
What is "ratm"?
-
rec.arts.theatre.musicals - a useless usenet newsgroup, lorded over by an impossibly smug cretin named Stephen Newport. He's ridiculed both Noel Katz and Dan the Man regularly, and yet that is where they've chosen to hang their collective hats these days. One just sits and scratches one's head in bemusement. Noel left us because someone got a little out of hand in terms of a post, and that just seems so thin-skinned to me, compared to what he's gone through over there. But, what do I know? Well, here's what I know - we have the best and brightest right here at haineshisway.com and if that's not good enough for the likes of them then the likes of us don't have to give it another moment's thought.
-
BK - I'm pretty sure DR Jay will be back in due time. As other DRs have indicated, he's pretty busy right now with a lot of things. We just have to make sure to keep posting so that he has something fun to read once he does return.
And, trust me, we all come back eventually.
;)

Men are being waxed now? It's the end of the world.
-
NINCOMPOOP!
Welcome five GUESTS. We're talkin' about exotic food and PIZZA!
-
I'm so overtired that I'm not tired.
-
I was just trying to see if the website for the station had a video clip or a transcript of the story. Alas, it doesn't seem to be on there.
I guess someone "harvested" that story from the "forest".
;)

I had a similar experience with Ethiopian cuisine. At first, it was novel, dipping this spongelike substance into some red sauce with chicken in it, then it somehow went awry, and the palate was not pleased. And the gut did soon follow into the land of displeasure.
I have had kangaroo meat, which will not seem like a big deal to our OZ pals. I enjoy the occasional ostrich jerky.
-
As for exotic foods...
Hmm... There are still some cuts of meat in various Asian cuisines that I'm still a little weary of. In Filipino cuisine, there is one dish, dinuguan, which is basically a blood pudding of sorts. It's made with every part of the pig except for the actual meat (loin, roasts, chops, etc.). I've only smelled it cooking away on the stove many times - P!U! - but I have never tried it. And there is also "balut" - which is basically a chicken egg... And I'll leave it at that.
The past couple of times I've had Vietnamese "pho", I've been ordering some of the other cuts of meats like tendon, bible tripe, etc. Pretty good. Unctious.
-
I don't really eat exotic food...Thursday night I did go to a Brazilian restaurant, PICANA, in Burbank with my friends, Larry and Pat, as we have done for a few years. All our birthdays are within a few weeks of each other and so its our communal birthday dinner and an excuse to get together, which we used to do once a week, before life and miscellaneous crap got in the way. This type of restaurant has a name which I forget, but basically, it is one set price, there is a buffet of delicious side dishes, on your table is a wooden cylinder with one end green and one end red. When you're ready for meat, you place the green side up. Various waiters drift by at certain intervals with large skewers of various meats...Brazilian beef, sirloin, chicken, sausage, pork, etc, etc. If you want some they either slice you off a piece or slide one off the skewer and put it on your plate. When you're done or need a rest you turn the red side up top and the waiters don't bother you.
The meat is all very tasty. It's quite filling and none of us can consume the vast quantities like we once did. The red end goes up a lot sooner than it used to. The place has gone up in price since last we went.
But the bottom line is, even though it's Brazilian, it's just a meat and taters joint. Though I like Indian food and Thai and some Oriental, I still pretty much stick to beef, chicken, and pork. My tastes are pretty basic and plebian. Probably the most exotic thing I've eaten is either vension or ostrich.
I guess you'd say I'm just a NINCOMPOOP when it comes to exotic cuisine.
-
As for Pizza...
Well, today is our last double Saturday, and the drummer and I have been going to Matchbox between shows on Saturdays. We'd go on Sundays too, but they're not open on Sundays. They have wonderful pizza, and I think I may go ahead and treat myself to a pie later today. Their woodburning oven turns out great crusts. And they also have this very spicy tomato sauce that's laced with chipotle peppers. YUM!
-
OK...
Well, I'm hoping to get up. Do my workout. Make the cake. Then head to the theatre. And what time is it now? Hmm... *And I have to do my workout if I'm going to have pizza between shows!
So...
Goodnight.

DR Pogue - Churrascaria
-
Jose, thanks...that's the name!
-
Let's see, exotic foods.....
I've sampled alligator and rattlesnake meat. I know, I know, sounds disgusting, but ya know what? They both tasted like chicken.
I also tried chocolate covered ants on a dare, and heaven only knows what was inside the dim sum that I consumed in Hong Kong.
The chocolate covered ants tasted just like Raisinets.
Makes you want to vomit on the ground, doesn't it?
-
It's almost 4a.m. on the East Coast, and there are at least 3 late night posters busy posting. Does that make us
NINCOMPOOPS?
Well, certainly NOT wussburgers. Good night, all.

Rodzinski, What sort of radio station are you looking for? I go to the internet a lot these days. My favourite is WMKV out of Cincinnati which plays big band and standards. During the daylight hours they sometimes interrupt the music for old fogeys programming but not a lot it seems to me. and after midnight your time (9:00 mine) it's pretty much just straight unadulterated music.
I also listen to the BBC a lot. They ave some great comedy shows and quizzes on BBC4 and BBC7. BBC 3 gets some interesting arts programming...I know Ben is quite fond of 3.
But one of the good things about the internet is you can you usually find some station that will serve your tastes or fit your mood.
-
I too have been to one of those places, Charles Pogue. This was actually in a big mall up the Hudson. As long as the green side is up, they just keep showing up with skewers and piles o' meat. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but really, we didn't feel to good about ourselves after eating there. And at this particular place, the meat was all a bit overcooked.
The thing that keeps me from adventuring to Thai and other places very often is fear of ordering something that is unsatisfying. Then I'm still hungry, and I've paid for a meal, when I know I could have been fully satisfied with the stuff I know.
-
Jose, we'll await a full pizza report, if you get my drift.
I cannot wait till I have my pizza. I just have to decide from whence it is coming.
NINCOMPOOP!
-
Holy moley on rye - page two!
I had me some gator once. It does not hold fond memories for me for various reasons.
-
As far as radio, and music in general, I am a rather extreme eclecticist. I like standards stations, but I get a little frustrated if the standards adhere to just basic Sinatra, Nat Cole, Dina Washington, etc. I don't mind those folks, you understand, but I don't like that limiting the formats neglects a lot of artists who were just massive and are now forgotten. Say, Eddy Howard or Vaughn Monroe or folks like that.
I really would like an eclectic format that cuts across all time periods up to say, 1986, but how can you package that for "the kids"? We have a freeform station called WFMU from New Jersey that will play just about anything, which is good, but the signal is weak. You know what else isn't bad? These channels on the digital cable which just have music on them. No talk or anything, just showtunes, or disco or whatever one is in the mood for.
-
I'm at the point of no return aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand for me there'll be no turnin' back.
-
Strange things I've eaten...
(Where oh where is TCB when we need him?)
...How does bear sound?
It was rather good, as a matter of fact. Not nearly as gamey as I thought it would be.
And there was the time der B and I were in Munich, and I had what my non-English speaking waiter and I (working from a German/English pocket dictionary) was hart, or deer. Well, it was hart. It was heart of the hart. Rather intereting, but the valves were on the chewey side.
:P
-
I suspect we'll get some good exotic foods tomorrow. And might I just add - NINCOMPOOP!
Well, I shall toddle off to the bedroom environment shortly.
-
Heart of the Hart? I love that melody.
Heart of the Hart? Brings back old memories...
-
Does anyone remember that word game, where you try to make as many other words using the letters of a long word?
Nincompoop sure sounds like a good starter word for that game.
-
Rodzinski, I agree with the limiting format of standard stations...we get too many big names or current names (more Linda Ronstadt or Rod Stewart essaying the Great American Songbook than I want to hear) and guys like Vaughn or Vic Damone or Johnny Hartman, etc are neglected.
You really should give WMKV a shot...they are all over the map with some of this stuff...lots of lesser known or obscure Big Bands and their vocalists...They even do a show once a week that features British Big Bands and vocalists from the thirties and forties. Tonight was "Latin Satin" night which features latin music. They have a show which is just a guy doing cocktail piano kind of music and one which features theatre organs. It's some good stuff.
We had two standard stations out here for a while. One went oldies rock a couple of months ago. The other one is holding its own though it just moved up the dial to different call letters and it still does basketball games which is a bore.
The station that went oldies had tried an all-show-music format once that didn't last very long. The reason it didn't was because it did not live up to its mandate...which was to do not only Broadway show tunes from original cast albums but also great songs from movie musicals and show music that transcended into standards sung by all the great vocalists. We never got the movie music or the standard covers by mainstream vocalists. And while I heard a lot of good show music, we got far too much from the eighties and nineties, Lloyd Webber and the like. So it went under. Their standard incarnation was much the thing you talked of...just mainstream singers...maybe twenty/twenty-five and too many old rock stars switching over to standards... and not enough of the unusual, the obscure, or the infrequently heard artists from bygone days...
-
I'm beyond tired. I'm beyond Rangoon. AOL is beyond help.
-
All righty then - I am now toddling off to the bedroom environment. I do love when we have late-night discourse, and thank all who partook. We are the world.
-
What???!!! BK answered the cry of the wild, wooly Wussburger! He couldn't hang in there? He had to toddle off to the land of nod? The Sandman was bitch-slapping him? Get in his pjs with the trapdoor and the feet. All tucked in under the blankies? What a wuss!
And Guy Haines had better be doing POINT OF NO RETURN on his new album. Eat your heart out, Gene McDaniels!
-
I shall have to check this station out. I have not actually done too much with internet radio listening. I can't understand the self-limiting concepts all these stations adhere to. I'm sure their focus marketing tells them it's the best way, though, so really it's not so much the stations' limited thinking, but people's willingness to be limited in their listening choices that allows it to happen.
In any case, I am an organ music afficianado, so that sounds good. Also, I recently found at the New York Public Library, all these LPs of British big bands that I had never heard of, so I've been enjoying those of late too. Percival Mackey's Band, The London Accordeon (sic) Orchestra, Jay Whidden and his band, Denny Dennis, Les Allen, Jimmy Kennedy, Michael Carr, Leslie Sarony...
That station sounds up my alley.
-
The latest development is WCBS, NY's longtime oldies station has "phased out" 50's doo-wop music. So, that's how it goes. Lop off another decade.
Now, I shall lop off to Wusstown. For where I live, it is much late.
-
The title of todays' column, "The Rain in Spain," and BK's mention of the two different scores for the English and American versions of "Night and the City" reminded me . . .
A few years ago I bought a cheap videotape of the Leslie Howard/Wendy Hiller "Pygmalion" and discovered it had a mostly-different musical score from the Arthur Honegger one I remembered. There were other subtle differences in the film, such as obscure Cockney slang terms redubbed with easier-to-understand (more American-sounding) words, Howard's use of the word "damn" replaced with other words, etc.
I assumed I had stumbled on the American (public domain?) print of the film, and that the less-quirky/more romantic-sounding music which IMDB credits to William Axt was added to make the story seem more like a romance and less like a satire (less like Shaw) . . . and therefore more palatable to American audiences.
But it's an interesting topic: alternative scores of different released versions of films. There are many stories of great scores that were rejected/replaced before a film was released. But how many films have been released twice, with two different scores?

"HAURU’S MOVING CASTLE” is still running.
-
Good morning, all! Today's the day of the bitch at Barnes & Noble. It seems everyone on the first floor I saw yesterday agrees that the lady in question is meaner than usual these days. Perhaps there will be a fuller report on this phenomenon later.
DRJay will return; he's totally occupied with career at the moment. He mentioned a trip to Detroit and a job offer he turned down, but things seem to be looking good fom him and he sends regards to all. I hope that all the others E&T's will come back as well. And on this subject I will post a few thoughts:
1. HHW, to me, is like going to a bash my Dear Friend BK is throwing for as many of his most intimate friends (a Cole Porter reference) who can make it.
2. If a conflict of opinion between guests becomes more, and the party turns into a brawl, people who don't want to be around the conflict have the option of leaving the party or joining the fray. I've done both, but I prefer to leave the party. Because I find this party full of genuinely kind and tolerant folk, I like knowing that I'm welcome back, even if I got into a Huff and drove away in it.
I'm hoping that some of our missing guests, one of whom I know left in a Huff, will return to the partay.
DRJane, DRPennyO and I shared a generous portion of cheesecake after dinner; it was quite yummilicious. And I won't have pizza today, since I had it twice in the past week. Had I but known!
DRMattH, I didn't get a chance to speak to Mr Meloni, since several employees rushed him for autographs and to slip him their phone numbers. I believe he was shopping for himself.
DRPogue, your package should arrive on Monday (I hope)!
I picked up three of the Jane Austen mysteries in which Miss Jane is the Nancy Drew of Regency England, and I find the author's style much better than that of the author of PRIDE & PRESCIENCE. The books appear to me a sly mixture of faux scholarship and Agatha Christie. This is, I regret to say, an assessment from reading the first two chapters. I hope the good will continues.
-
Last night, I, too, watched Richard Widmark’s film. Pickup On South Street was so moody and Richard Widmark was remarkable in the role of hard-boiled pickpocket and also Jean Peters was attractive in it.
-
Well, I will try to eat Pizza sometime today. It won't be for lunch. I'm not sure what I'm doing for lunch. Mr. Baxter/Anthony is on LI today for a clown show at Smithaven Mall and I am meeting two friends from work. We will have lunch somewhere on Ninth Avenue and then go see the re-mounting of The Musical of Musicals-The Musical at Dodger Stages. I've seen the show and one of my friends has also seen it. We loved it and want to draw other people into our cult so we've talked Kathye into seeing it with us. Should be a wonderful afternoon. I will stay in midtown after the show because I'm seeing a Playwrights Horizon show this evening. In the interim between Musical of Musicals and On the Mountain I will most likely partake of my pizza. On the Mountain is a new piece by Christopher Shinn. I've seen some of his work and I say, with regret, I'm not looking forward to this. It's part of my PH subscription. The play is about a woman obsessed by the death of Kurt Cobain. We shall see. I will report later in the evening when I return.
Next Thursday I'm seeing Shockheaded Peter at the Little Shubert Theatre on 42nd Street. It won an Olivier award a few years ago. It's based on "a gruesome 19th Century children's story". I know it played at the New Victory here a few years ago and it's returned with the original cast. Don't know what to expect so I'm going with an open mind but hoping for fun.
I'm also going to get a discount ticket to All Shook Up, the next of the JukeBox musicals to hit the scene. It begins performances Febrary 20th and opens about a month later. It got decent reviews in Chicago. It was playing at the same time as Spamalot, which got raves. It's playing at the Palace and I shall most likely see it from the last rows of the balcony. The Palace is a wonderful theatre but the upper reaches are truly upper reaches. Well, I have my binoculars and will report after I see it.
I will also bite the bullet and see what I can get for Spamalot. As much as I want to see it, the hype factor is already becoming something of a warning. Please don't tell me it's the next Producers or one of the funniest things in all Christendom. I think that kind of praise only raises expectations to the point that people see the show because the feel they must see it, not because they want to see it. Theatre should be something you want to do/see, not some social obligation. Go because you love it, not so that you can talk with your friends about how you saw the next great hit and aren't you lucky!
Oh, my, a mini-rant. That's all for now. I need some breakfast. Bye.
-
Hi, Larry. Hi, Hisaka. I'm not sure if you're here or not. Your computer icon is not lit indicating you're not on-line but up top your name is listed along with Mr. Moore and me.
-
Good Morning all!
It is 47 degrees F here in the land of Sunshine. But what care I? In a scant month, I shall go
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]
ICE SKATING! [/move]
I shall glide across the ice more graceful than a gazelle in underpants, doing a triple lutz and a death spiral at the same time! People will stop and point and Eww and Ahhh and I shall be the height of modesty and say it was nothing. It was only my first time on the ice!
Note to self: Remember to check with the AFLAC rep--Is Ice Skating covered under the policy?
Errr, not to cast doubt on what I just said but DR Elmore, DR Ben or DR Jose--how far is the nearest emergency clinic from Rockefeller Center? People will be so dazzled by what I'm doing on the ice, I think I should know that. Yeah, that sounds good. ;) :D
DR Ginny, I am looking forward to seeing if I shall be A MUSED by my hotel. I did discover that they do not have a hair drier. I found that out by reading some of the reviews people wrote about it. That's one point in the Milfords favor--they did have hair driers. Not that it's a big deal to pack one. For my last trip, I had everything. Travel iron, travel hair drier, etc so it's not like I have to run out and get one.
You shall have to come over and see my room and maybe I can see yours so we can compare them for future trips. :D
DR Jose, your treats sound so yummy. I would have liked to try a slice of your white cheesecake.
DR Elmore, I've been pouring over my map of NYC and found a B&N down by the Farmers Market. Is that your B&N? Or is it the one off of the Ave. of the Americias? I LOVE this little folding map I bought. I can't believe how close I was to things the last time around and missed them.
Did they ever finish that mural on the side of the building down by Madison Square Garden? I remember the guys on the side of the building painting it when I was there in May.
Well, I'm off. I'm going to see Hairspray today. Bless my Mom, I told her that and she said for them not to get my head wet because it's so cold today. :D
-
It is raining here, too. It began on Thursday and should continue through tomorrow. Drat. I was going to go for a walk, but I dislike walking in the rain and getting wet. I like to watch rain from inside a nice warm house; I don't like to be in it.
-
DR MATT
I recalibrated the tv and finally saw a program that I believe was actually shot on high def and it was amazing!!! A documentary on penguins in the Antartic and it wasn't boring! The stunning colors and music made it a joy to watch. Just zoomed in and got rid of he bars on top and bottom.
There needs to be more programming like that to show off HD
-
I noticed that TCM and FOX-M amoung others show films in widescreen. Isn't it possible to enhance them for 16 x 9 tvs? Also do they show the films unedited?
-
If I am up to it, I will get with my actors today and work on act two of the play.
-
Last night DR George asked:
"I haven't watched LAST week's Enterprise, yet. A woman that I work with taped it and is going to make me a copy. Should I (do I need to) wait to see it or is tonight's episode the start of a new 3-episode story??"
Well, actually, last night's episode was the conclusion of the three episode arc detailing a potential war and Archer's attempts to play mediator. Of course, there is a brief recap at the start of the episode in case you want to go ahead and watch this week's story, but I did enjoy last week's episode very much so it's your call. Last night's episode wasn't quite as exciting as the two previous weeks' episodes, but it was still entertaining, and, as I said last night, had a very surprising development in the last scene.
-
I noticed that TCM and FOX-M amoung others show films in widescreen. Isn't it possible to enhance them for 16 x 9 tvs? Also do they show the films unedited?
Some HDTVs have built in line doublers (mine does) and some have video scalers that do an even better job, and these can also be bought in separate devices to upconvert all standard definition video pictures to make the pictures near high definition quality, but I won't spend the money (they aren't cheap).
-
Forgot to answer the edited question, DR Michael Shayne. I believe TCM and Fox Movie Channel do show their films unedited. I noticed that they showed RAGING BULL at 4 a.m. last week. I guess due to the violence and profanity.
-
DR Rodzinski, there was quite a bit of discussion of WHAT A WAY TO GO! several weeks ago after bk watched his DVD and gave us his opinion. That must have happened just before you joined us, but there was definitely a split vote among viewers of the film here with some liking it very much and some disliking it pretty intensely.
-
My beloved Chinese restaurant near my house has closed its doors, and today I will venture forth to the Golden Corral to satisfy my gluttony. Haven't been to this one before, so I don't know if they'll have pizza or not. I'll have to wait and see. A report later in the afternoon.
-
I'm not much for exotic cuisines. There was a Cuban restaurant for awhile a couple of blocks up from my house that my partner and I used to frequent, and I liked everything I ever had there.
As for as unusual food, I had turtle once, and it was OK.
I guess I've just a beef and potatoes kind of guy.
-
So sad to be all alone in the world here.
-
DR Elmore, thanks for the Meloni information. He's such a good guy, just a regular Joe who's totally down-to-earth about his fame and talent. It's no secret here that I think he walks on water.

Danise, neither B&N is Larry's B&n. Both are near me. The Farmer's Market B&N is on 17th Street between Broadway and Park Avenue South, which becomes the remants of Fourth Avenue in just three blocks. It's a very big store and despite my knowledge of NYC history, I forget what it was before it became a B&N. It's one of many older buildings in the area that were part of the thriving Union Square scene at the turn of the century. The B&N on Sixth Avenue is at 21st Street, also far from Mr. Moore's stomping grounds. Even though it seems smaller than the Union Square facility, from what I've heard (told to me by a friend who used to work there) the Sixth Avenue facility is the "flagship" store. It's in the middle of the Chelsea shopping revival with Bed, Bath & Beyond, Best Buy, Home Depot, T.J. Maxx and many other mall-type stores. Mr. Moore's store is uptown at 83rd Street. It's also a multi-level store (I believe it's two floors, correct LMOORE?) and I have used the bathroom at times because it's on the list of available public restrooms (the one I keep in my brain). I haven't been in the store since I met dear Mr. Moore. We New Yorkers are a neighborhood-oriented kind of people. I go to mid-town to see theatre but we don't get out of our neighborhood as much as we should. We have been uptown to Larry's lovely abode and he has been down here and next week we shall traverse to Brooklyn (all the way out to Bay Ridge) for a gathering of the cousins (as it has been called) of the Morelli clan but we have so much in the neighborhood that unless we make plans we don't often get above 23rd Street (I'm on 16th). I also work in my neighborhood (half a block from my apartment) so I don't commute to other parts of the city during the week.
Well, that certainly turned into a long paragraph, didn't it. All because I wanted to explain about Barnes & Noble. Perhaps Anthony is correct, I do give too much information. He says "I ask a question and ten minutes later I get the answer I'm looking for." Oh, well. At least he gets some history and further information in the process. What can I say? it's me ;D
-
Now, I'm all alone in the world and I'm about to leave. Shower, then a walk uptown to purchase theatre tickets, another short walk to meet my theatre buddies, lunch and two shows.
Later, Gaters.

DR Panni has left the site, and we miss her very much. I wish she would come back.
-
Warning: Rant ahead.
It is now 10 a.m., and I am still waiting to hear from the music director about the music and other worship information for tomorrow's service so that I can get my work done.
End of rant.
-
elmore, I shall look forward to receiving said package.
-
DR Laura - come sing with my group in Burlingame, CA, I'll always have the music to you the week before each Sunday. That's just annoying... sorry you have to go through that
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon!
Woke up - Check!
Worked out - Check!
Made cake - Check!
Cleaned kitchen - Check!
Vacuum rugs - Check!
Now, I just need to clean up myself, and assemble the cake - German Chocolate. -Boy, are my parents ovens finicky and inconsistent. Ah, well, that's what all the Coconut-Pecan frosting is for!!!
I'll have to catch up on the posts later... but I will be having pizza between shows!
Laters.
-
Oh, before I forget....
NINCOMPOOP!!!
-
Thank you, DR Matthew. I am not a singer; I do the paperwork, ie, the bulletins, as well as the powerpoint slides. If she chooses hymns that are not in our hymnbook, I have to make enough copies, as well. I hate having to stay up late on Saturday night to get it done in time.
-
Well, off to the buffet now to put on a few pounds. I'll be back later feeling stuffed and uncomfortable. But, hey, that's what life's all about! :D
(I just gave DR TCB lots of ammunition for bad jokes and puns.)
-
People come, people go, like Grand Hotel.
I had a gloriously glorious night of sleep, which I really needed.
Love Pickup on South Street. I'm going to try and watch at least three DVDs this weekend, perhaps more.
-
I do miss some of our young'uns - Jenny posts infrequently and seems to have actual technical problems logging onto the site. Swishy Sarah has seemingly disappeared into the ether, and Maya is long gone. Robin, who I liked very much, is long gone, as well. It's all fine, because we get wonderful new folks like Rodzinski and vixmom and Ginny and cillaliz.
-
DR Rodzinski, there was quite a bit of discussion of WHAT A WAY TO GO! several weeks ago after bk watched his DVD and gave us his opinion. That must have happened just before you joined us, but there was definitely a split vote among viewers of the film here with some liking it very much and some disliking it pretty intensely.
A week before Rodzinski joined the forum, I posted a few observations on it as I had watched it Jan. 22.
-
My beloved Chinese restaurant near my house has closed its doors, and today I will venture forth to the Golden Corral to satisfy my gluttony. Haven't been to this one before, so I don't know if they'll have pizza or not. I'll have to wait and see. A report later in the afternoon.
What a tragedy if you can't find a Chinese restaurant that serves pizza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D
-
PIZZA! That's what I'M talkin' about.
NINCOMPOOP! I know a few people I'd ascribe that term to.
-
The rain has stopped, hopefully for the next year.
-
Welcome six GUESTS. We're talkin' about exotic foods and PIZZA. We need more tales of exotic foods.
I'm on my way to Staples to Xerox pages, then on my way to my pal Margaret's to deliver them.
-
I do miss some of our young'uns - Jenny posts infrequently and seems to have actual technical problems logging onto the site.
Jenny is doing well. Der Brucer regularly chats with her via IM. Her schedule keeps her quite busy, with her attending two schools and all the drama...not to mention theater.
-
SPEAKING OF PIZZA...
All right, I confess, I pulled this from another board where I participate (the Good Eats Fan Page, of course). Another poster found this in a copy of Maxim.
Top 10 pizza toppings by country
Japan - squid
England - tuna and corn
Guatamala - black bean sauce
Chile - mussels and clams
Bahamas - Barbequed chicken
Australia - eggs
India - pickled ginger
France - fresh cream
Brazil - green peas
Colombia - guava
-
Last night DR George asked:
Thanks for the info. I think I'll wait and watch the two episodes together.
-
"Lil Abner", "What a Way to Go!"... Okay, so I'm a little behind. But to me, it's awesome just to find a site where people even know what these things are!
"Pickup on South Street" is a great film. With a great title.
-
DRSWW there are so many things on that list that are just wrong in so many ways! LOL.....but it's wonderful that people enjoy pizza!
Like DRCP - this Midwesterner just doesn't enjoy exotic food. In fact, I usually run the other way. I do not have an educated palate. I think my palate dropped out of grade school.
There are a few things I have tried at some Chinese restaurants - and I did go to a Thai restaurant once, and couldn't find anything to eat. The sushi or some kind of raw fish rolls - bleh. I tasted them.
I love pizza with pepperonis and sausage and green peppers. MMMMMMMMMM......I like a regular crust.....no mushrooms please, no OLIVES please. Ham chunks are okay, not preferred.
I think now I will have a pizza.
-
I'm at work (making up time) and should be working. So work, I shall.
The Topic of the Day: exotic foods = :P I'm not an adventurous eater...at all. I've had beefalo and buffalo burgers. That's about as exotic as I'm ever likely to get.
As for pizza, I have several different frozen pizzas at home...all of which are very good. At least one shall be consumed today. My favorite is thin crust with pepperoni and pineapple and cashews. A local place here in the Olympia area (actually, it's in Lacey) is Dirty Dave's Gay '90s Pizza Parlor (that's the 1890s ;) ). They do thin crust right! And cashews are one of their specialty items. VERY GOOD!!
Now, back to work! ;D
-
Thelma Ritter in Pick Up on South Street - Go ahead, you'd be doin' me a favor.... Whew!
And yes as DRHISAKA wrote Jean Peters is lovely and very good as a two-bit dame....
-
NINCOMPOOP! I know a few people I'd ascribe that term to.
We've even worked together with some of them!
DRDanise, the nearest hospital from Rockefeller Center is St Clare's, which is at 51st Street and 9th Avenue.
DRBen, B&N is at 82nd and Broadway. So far, it's been a lovely day, no celebrities, but a lot of folk heading over to Central Park to see the Christo/Jean-Claude "The Gates." The word-of-mouth is that it's spectacular!
-
Hmmmm watching SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET. Well looking at it.
Yesterday I got the WIDESCREEN version of FUNNY FACE. I like this movie, expecially the fashion shoots and the wonderful scenery in Paris!
And when Audrey does her Pixie dancing, I always think of Mary Tyler Moore.
NEtWORK was on late last night. Oh my!
-
I am scanning photos for the theatre site. Sometimes technology is slow.
-
I'm not sure if I missed some more tsuris yesterday regarding E&T people, but I will say this. I received an AOL IM from someone named "HHW39625" (I may have the numbers wrong, sorry, I'm still quite sick and my brain is not functioning). But the message read:
You were not missed and no one wants you back. Just go away.
Now if this person thought I would slink away in horror and/or fear, they are sadly mistaken. But now I am wondering if others are getting these IMs which I must assume are unauthorized since several H/Ks emailed me privately about my recent illness. I was simply too tired yesterday to post about this, but have decided this person (I use the term loosely) needs to be "outed." And if that person is reading this-here post, I will press the "notify AOL" button if I receive any more "communiques."
Re: radio. Well, Dear Spouse Betsy is being courted rather heavily by a local PDX station for a rather lucrative new talk show that may end up, in the best of all possible worlds, getting national syndication. She is in fact meeting with the producer and a potential co-host this afternoon.
Re: Exotic Foods. I've only had Ethiopian once, and it didn't agree with me (maybe it sent the IM, LOL). We actually all love Thai food--it is in fact one of the few genres that my fussy eater 8 year old son will jump at the chance to eat (along with Kentucky Fried Chicken--go figure). There are some truly fabulous Thai restaurants in Portland.
-
JMK - that seems very odd, since you haven't been away all that much.
Don't you hate when food disagrees with you? I'll say something and then the food will just disagree with it, just for the HELL of it.
I'll be eating my pizza at some point in the next two hours.
I've dropped new pages off at Margaret's and will await her call.
-
I'm having a pizza for lunch, too. I have become addicted to "Boca Supreme" pizzas, with soy pepperoni and sausage. They're really spicy and have been helping me break up this mucus attack I'm suffering (too much information? sorry).
I post at RATM, too. I've just learned to ignore Newport. It makes it all so much more pleasant.
-

How rude!! :o No one deserves that. And having met you (and your lovely wife, Betsy), certainly not you.
-
Now I'm done with work. To home and pizza! ;D
-
My pizza: Pepperoni, mushrooms, and a plain slice. So yummilicious I can't even tell you. From my local pizzeria, Quickies, one of the best in town.
-
DR JMK - I would say that is from some "guest" - how strange.
-
Well curiosity is a terrible thing.
DR JOSE - never never NEVER mention this again. :P
Here is a link to a description of the precedure you saw the news story about.
No pictures, but not for the faint of heart. :-X

Oh my! Ruby Wax was on E! doing the Red Carpet for the BAFTA's. ;D
-
Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?
NINCOMPOOP!
Re Thelma Ritter - can you name one character woman working today who is her equal or who is as unique as her?
-
Thelma Ritter remains, to this date, my favorite character actress of all time! I doubt she can ever be equalled.
Whether it's her Birdie wisecracking about Eve's story lacking only the element of hounds nipping at her tail, or whether her Clancy is bawling out Jane Froman for having looks, talent and a man who loves her while she sits around and mopes, or whether her Aggie is fluffing her hair one more time hoping for another compliment from Cleve Van Valen -- and all the wonderful other characters she played in between -- there's been no one on the screen like her since her last movie.
-
Welcome six GUESTS! We're talkin' about exotic foods and PIZZA. And NINCOMPOOP!
My point was that there is not one character woman who even approaches the league of Thelma Ritter or any of the great character dames of the thirties, forties, and fifties.
-
I agree DR RON.....
There is one actress...although she was a different type....who I thought always played great character roles....Colleen Dewhurst.
-
Thelma Ritter has no modern equivalent.
Speaking of modern, just finished a film on one of the HBOs entitled "All the Real Girls" from 2003. Zooey Deschanel, who sang so nicely in "Elf" just gives a magnificent performance, as does the male lead. This movie is extrememly well-acted and artful and unique. Just a small-town love story, really, but an example of what really really good acting can do.
-
Now, I know that some people (a GYPSY reference) don’t consider Taco Pizza (sometimes known as Mexican Pizza) to be real pizza. Personally, I enjoy it, once in a great while, as an alternative to regular pizza.
Now, having said that, I would like to report that I am going to friends’ house for dinner tonight, and I already know that they will be serving Mexican. Not Mexican Pizza (sometimes known as Taco Pizza), but regular Mexican food. So, although (technically) I won’t be eating pizza today; I am, at least, within six degrees of pizza.
And if that doesn’t work, I just threw a handful of Totino’s Pizza Rolls into the microwave and then ate them, so hopefully that counts for something. At least it keeps me from being a complete……
……………wait for it……..
……………wait for it……..
NINCOMPOOP!
-
I am in the same boat, TCB, in that the Gal was promised Mexican food from the Taco Bell for dinner, so I was going to get a "Mexican Pizza" to adhere to the letter of the law.
I will add that if Barbara Harris could be coaxed into acting again, she could be as good as Thelma Ritter. Debate me on that if you will.
-
I'm not sure if I missed some more tsuris yesterday regarding E&T people, but I will say this. I received an AOL IM from someone named "HHW39625" (I may have the numbers wrong, sorry, I'm still quite sick and my brain is not functioning). But the message read:

DRJMK, there's no way my typing can indicate my outrage at such rude and appalling behavior! I'm glad to see you back,
Oy! Such a day at B&N! Very busy, which makes the time fly, but I had to deal with a crazy unwashed bag lady and several more of the halt, the lame, and the maimed as well as some wonderful customers. The icing on the cake was the arrival of madman Jason Graae, whom I haven't seen since we recorded in London in June 2001. He looked fantastic, and we had about 30 minutes of mirth and fun at the info desk while the customers waited.
-
TCB is back. Where in tarnation has he been?
-
PIZZA. I want more!
NINCOMPOOP!
-
Once again I had no packages. I do believe I may have to write some nasty notes to a couple of vendors.
-
My point was that there is not one character woman who even approaches the league of Thelma Ritter or any of the great character dames of the thirties, forties, and fifties.
I'll drink to that. Hell, let's all drink to that! I agree with DRRodzinski about the great Barbara Harris who was always a character actress, and I love Jennifer Coolidge, but I can't think of anyone around today remotely close to Thelma's range. Maybe Dana Ivey?
DRTCB, I'm happy to see you.

Speaking (or writing) of interesting foods, der Brucer found an article on Advanced Sushi Dining (http://The server will place a set of chopsticks before you, with the tips to the left on their rest. Throughout the meal, keep the rest where it is, and replace the sticks facing left. If there's no rest, return the sticks with the points to the left directly on the counter.
Next challenge: the soy sauce and wasabi issue. Contrary to popular belief, you're only supposed to put a few drops of soy sauce in the bowl, and no wasabi. I learned this that first night at Ta-ke when Shishido whisked away the full bowl and handed me another one to try again. The idea, he explained, is to dab a bit of wasabi onto each piece of sashimi; that way you can control the amount you put on each piece.) a little while ago in the Los Angeles Times. The following quotes might whet everyone's interest:
The server will place a set of chopsticks before you, with the tips to the left on their rest. Throughout the meal, keep the rest where it is, and replace the sticks facing left. If there's no rest, return the sticks with the points to the left directly on the counter.
What if you're left handed? I'm not, but my mother was, and she always was more comfortable doing things in the reverse direction. She even knitted left handed. Shouldn't she have been allowed to have the tips of her chopsticks facing right?

So I've been an ignorant American barbarian all this time. *sigh*

The real reason we don't have a number of Thelma Ritters out there, IMO, is because movie makers require all women to be beautiful. Not just pretty, but drop-dead gaw-geous! It's a shame, really, because not every woman is that beautiful on the outside.
I'd put Nancy Walker in Ritter's league. Maybe Betty White, now that she's free of Golden Girls and doesn't have to play the poster child of the after-fifty set. There are probably a number of older actresses who fit the bill. But none of the newer actresses that come to (my) mind are free of the Barbie curse, able to develop their own look.
Damn you, Maybelline and Clairol. Damn you all to hell.
-
Golden Corral, where I went today for my main meal of the day, is a family buffet restaurant but not a Chinese restaurant. Anyway, they did have pizza, so in honor of the day, I did have a slice. The other meat dishes I had were pulled barbecue pork, meat loaf, and Bourbon Street Chicken.
For dessert I had one and a half slices of a very moist and delicious red velvet cake.
Yes, I'll be going back there next week for sure!
-
Just had a call from my friend Margaret, who finished reading the eighty count them eighty pages I wrote in the last two weeks. She loved them - and is finding the story and the characters and the writing "very engaging". I'm so pleased! She didn't really even have any comments for me this time. On the first batch of pages she had a couple of things she thought should be fleshed out, which I did. So, it's on I go.
-
Meant to mention that the slice of pizza I had was pepperoni.
When I think character actress, I think immediately of Thelma Ritter who was in my mind as memorable as any star of her era.
-
I've been so busy on the phone today that I haven't had a chance to catch up on eitheer MONK or MEDICAL INVESTIGATION which I recorded to the DVR last night. Should have time in a minute to squeeze in MONK before the evening's programs begin.
-
Just an update on my job situation. As some of you may remember, I was hired on as an interum director of music at a Catholic church here in the SF Bay Area, but couldn't be given a title or a salary until the person that was there before me officially quit. Well, it looks like the administration has decided to put me on salary now!!! We're still not sure what's going on with the other guy, but they do have to hold the job for him legally - as he can not physically do the job.
Anyhow, I spoke to the other guy today, and he's coming in on Wednesday to clean up his stuff, sounds like he's finally admitting that he can't physically do the job anymore and is pulling out. It's good news all around.
We're going out to celebrate the "salary" part of the job tonight - going to Buca di Beppo (where I will try and remember to have pizza!!) It's getting close to actually having a title also, so that's really exciting.
I've got a great acoustical choir loft, a real pipe organ, a Kawaii 1/2 grand piano, a built in cantor, a great associcate that works with the kids and the contemporary choir, and an adult choir that's under my direction. (with 3 paid section leaders) Life is good - I've arrived!!!

Congratulations, Matthew!! ;D ;D
-
Hey, HI!!
Yes, I had a lovely dinner with the lovely Elmoore last night, at Artie's. I am fighting a cold, so chicken soup was my choice - in a BIG way. Chicken in the pot, like in the old days, back in the shtetl.
Anyhow - I'm working on the program for the show, and need BK's quarter-page ad for his novel! The pages are 5 1/4 x 8 1/2. (letter size, folded and stapled in the middle). Sorry, no color except the front cover. One quarter page, black and white, in pdf, so I can just paste it into my Pagemaker file, needed ASAP!
Piano loaned by Beethoven Pianos of 58th Street - they get an ad, too. And now I'm working on the insurance policy - short term limited liability. Oh, the details!! I may even get to rehearsing this sucker at some point. Load in is 4 weeks from Monday!!!!!
-
MattheW!! I KNOW Buca di Beppo - the one in Westlake or Simi or wherever the heck that one is. What fun. Congrats!!
-
And I checked with Tony at the Clurman box office yesterday, and found TWELVE Hainsies had actually purchased tix so far in advance!! OOOhhhhh! It's really happening. (got Jose's bio for the program yesterday or the day before... bit by bit...)
Okay, gonna go schmooze prospects. Bye. More later. love from Aunt Pen
-
I have had pizza! It was Palermo's Primo Thin (ultra-thin crust pizza). The description on the box is "A Crispy Thin Crust Pizza Topped with Italian Style Cheeses and a Garlicky mixture of Tomatoes and Basil." "Garlicky"?? Well, I didn't notice much garlic at all. There was a clump of basil right in the middle that I had to spread out after it was cooked. But it was good. MMM!
-
I may have missed an earlier posts but just noticed the BAFTA awards are out. The awards show that knows what to do with awards, presenters and winners!
-
Congratulations, DR Matthew. Looks like things are falling into place for you, and that is good news indeed!
-
Jose, no rush on the cookies. I am trying to loose a few pounds and it won’t be long before I have Girl Scout cookies.
I know how it feels to loose your favorite radio station to news and talk shows. It has happened to me twice now. Soon you will be in NY where I expect they have a great selection of stations.
Today we went to the home show and had this incredible caramel corn that melts in your mouth. How can corn melt in your mouth you ask? Because it is made without hulls and kernels, how I don’t know. Check out the website.

I may have missed an earlier posts but just noticed the BAFTA awards are out. The awards show that knows what to do with awards, presenters and winners!
The word that comes to mind is "defenestration". What does BAFTA do?
-
Der Brucer and I have yet to find a good pizza place here in Rehoboth. Can't have everything, I guess.
As for Buca di Beppo (http://www.bucadibeppo.com/), it's a nationwide chain. But I haven't been to any of their locations as of yet.
-
Bruce, as Jose and Stuart have mentioned, Jay is busy at the moment. I’m sure he will be back. Maybe one day Noel will return but his departure is a reminder for us to be gentle towards others when sharing our different opinions.
Danise you might call the hotel and ask if they have a hair dryer and an iron on request. I would take the hair dryer to be safe and leave the iron at home.

I haven’t had pizza in ages, now I’m craving it but I’m not going out for any. I’m going to have scrambled eggs, basmati and broccoli for dinner.
I enjoy ethnic food very much and am always ready to try new foods, providing they are vegetarian and not too hot.
JMK I’m shocked you received such a message.
Wish Betsy congratulations and good luck with the radio show.
TCB did you enjoy your dinner?
-
My cyber-father has returned! Hurrah! So wonderful to see you back with us.
-
Well, I love Jay, but simply do not understand his continued absence in light of the fact that he apparently has time to e-mail everyone. That's just me, though. If and when he's back, he's back, and that will be fine.
-
Ann has returned - hurrah.
But has Ann caught up?
PIZZA! EXOTIC FOODS! NINCOMPOOP!
Tonight I shall be going to my friend's screeening facility - he's doing a TV night - have no idea what he'll be running but I'm sure there'll be some interesting things, all in 16mm.
-
I enjoy ethnic food very much and am always ready to try new foods, providing they are vegetarian and not too hot.
Jane, out of curiosity, how do you handle the situation when you are out with friends, and by mistake you end up in a restaurant that is not vegetarian friendly?
I had this happen to a co-worker, when the unit boss decided we should head over to Stewart Anderson's Black Angus for our Christmas lunch one year. She was quite gracious about the situation, but several of us felt badly for her.
-
Hi, all - Today should have been a work Saturday for me, but I took a vacation day to attend an event called "Books, Brunch, and Boas," sponsored by Middletown AAUW. The speaker was author Sue Buchanan, a 22-year cancer survivor who has written books for both adults and children. My favorite title is I'm Alive and the Doctor's Dead. There were almost 300 people there, including many friends I don't see often (working out of town, you know). There were also lovely creative gift baskets and other items for raffle - I tried for the chocolate basket, the socks basket, the knitting basket, and a gift certificate for a 1-hour massage. Zip! Oh, well, the ticket sales went to good cause, the women's health wing at our local hospital.
Got home from there, had a snack of pizza leftover from last night (Donato's thin crust with chicken and green peppers), took a nap, and then went with DH Richard to see "Million Dollar Baby." We've now seen 3 of the 5 best picture Oscar nominees - still need to see "The Aviator" and "Ray."
All in all, it's been a delightful vacation day.
-
Well, I love Jay, but simply do not understand his continued absence in light of the fact that he apparently has time to e-mail everyone. That's just me, though. If and when he's back, he's back, and that will be fine.
E-mail is easy to send: just write and click. HHW takes a bit more dedication, catching up on your daily journal and all the posts. I remember when der B and I were driving cross-country, we had a lot of difficulty even logging onto the Internet, much less keep up with all that was going on with everyone.
All my best to Jay, wherever he is in Cyberspace!
-
Jane, Betsy hasn't accepted the radio offer yet. She's going through her standard gnashing-of-the-teeth weighing pros and cons at the moment. I get to listen a lot. :) The good thing is, she wouldn't just be doing news if she accepts. The bad thing is, she would still have to get up before the veritable crack of dawn, and also would not be able to keep either her ED job or the extremely well-paying contract she has with an environmental organization. So we'll have to see.
I, of course, continue on my career path (more of an unmarked wilderness trail, actually) unabated. ;D
-
Matthew congratulations on the new salary and recognition.
-
TOD - exotic foods - every October for the last 25 years there has been an international festival, Middfest, here in Middletown, Ohio, of all places. Each year there's a featured country and much of the programming is devoted to that country, but the outdoor food court has a wonderful assortment of all kinds of ethnic foods. One of the perennial favorites is the Aussie burger, a grilled hamburger topped with a fried egg - DR Tomovoz, can you verify that this is authentic? Also, DR Jose, one of my favorite booths has always been the Phillipine food - skewered pork, some noodle dish, and wonderful skinny eggrolls.
-
Traditional hamburgers (With the lot) here DR Ginny
would indeed have an egg,and also bacon, pineapple and quite likely beetroot added to the usual beef, lettuce and tomato.
-
DR Tomovoz - thank you for the Aussie burger info!
DR Matthew - congratulations on your job developments!
DR's TCB and JMK - welcome back!
-
The BAFTA awards also included a special award to John Barry this year.
-

I had this happen to a co-worker, when the unit boss decided we should head over to Stewart Anderson's Black Angus for our Christmas lunch one year. She was quite gracious about the situation, but several of us felt badly for her.
There is usually something to eat and often the chef will create a dish for me, especially at a nice restaurant. I do eat some fish which makes it easier for me. I’m surprised the chef at the restaurant didn’t do something for your co-worker. There is always a baked potato with vegetables. :)
-
It's all fine, because we get wonderful new folks like Rodzinski and vixmom and Ginny and cillaliz.
Well, bk, what a nice thing to say and such delightful company to be in!
-
Ginny you should have warned me not to read your food post. :P
I did however get a kick out of the book title. ;D
-
Ginny you should have warned me not to read your food post. :P
Well, then, Jane, don't read the follow-up that Tomovoz posted ;)
I wish you could have been here to attend the book brunch with me today.
-
I recently got off the phone with a friend with whom I chatted for several hours.
We laughed and laughed and laughed.
It was such fun.
-
Well, then, Jane, don't read the follow-up that Tomovoz posted ;)
I wish you could have been here to attend the book brunch with me today.
Thanks for the warning. ;D
And me too. It would have been fun. :D
-
Evening all. I came back from seeing Hairspray and was all excited to tell you about it. Then I saw the post from DR JMK about some person sending him that God Awful AOL message. I am outraged. How DARE some jerk do that!
I am so very sorry you received that message, DR JMK.
What gets me is that in these type of situations the person doesn’t even have the guts to ID themselves properly.
-
We used to have this situation quite often, only it was normally directed at me. Prior to the advent of this board, we had several troublemakers posting under several nom de plumes. It wasn't hard to figure out who they were. Maybe Ron was talking to one of them earlier. :-)
-
We drove up to my sister's house today to celebrate hers and about 5 other people's birthdays. I had cake (YAY!!) but no pizza. The most exotic thing I had today were sprouts. However I have eaten many an exotic thing. Most of the time I had no idea until it was put in front of me. There was asushi restaurant on a ship once that served many an exotic sea creature. While I enjoyed about half of them, I merely tolerated the rest and would not have them again by choice.
With the rain and all the clouds scudding by, the skies today were showing off magnificently.
-
I shan't be staying all that long for the screening tonight, because I do believe I shall be in the Jacuzzi later tonight. Won't that be fun?
-
We need more PIZZA descriptions.
-
Danise tell us about HAIRSPRAY.
-
If you want pizza descriptions, how about the most exotic pizza you've ever had. I suppose most everything from California Pizza Kitchen would probably qualify. I had a baked potato pizza once with sour cream, chives and all the rest.
-
I am having something better than pizza, a toasted egg bagel with just a smidgen of butter.
-
A SMIDGEN? I can't do a SMIDGEN, I'm afraid. I have to put a LOT of butter on whatever I'm putting butter on.
-
Well, DR Jane. I really did enjoy Hairspray. Much, much more then I thought I would.
The cast was so up and by the second act they had the entire audience in the palm of their hands.
My very favorite part was Timeless To Me. The chemistry between Stephen DeRosa (Wilbur Turnblad) and John Pinette (Edna Turnblad) was electric. I really enjoyed Mr. DeRosa’s voice. I hope that I get the chance to see him in something else someday.
I kept squirming in my chair because I wanted to move with the music. I’m not much of a dancer but I sure wanted to today.
DR Matthew. I am glad to hear that your job situation is going so well.
DRPennyO, I am so looking forward to seeing your show! Only a few more weeks to go! I do hope you are feeling well. It seems the NYC group are all suffering from various ills before our gathering. Let’s just hope it is a sign that we well all be happy, safe and well when we meet.
DRJane, the Muse does have the iron/ironing board just not the hair drier. I was simply saying that I am prepared if the need should arise for any missing items. LOL!
-
Pizza. I think the strangest I've ever had was Strawberry pizza. It was very good.
-
Danise-pleased you had a fun show.
I'm also glad you won't need to travel with an iron again. LOL. Sometimes if the hair dryer, iron, whatever are not in the hotel room you can still call down to the desk or housekeeping and get it.
-
Bruce, just slowly use less and less butter until suddenly you find too much of it makes you sick. That is what I did anyway.
-
Bear is a butter boy. He LOVES it. I'm bad but I have been known to let him have a cracker with butter on it.
I wish you could have seen the little dog I saw today at the vet's office. I had to get more HeartGuard for my babies. It was sooo tiny and cute. A pocket pup to be sure.
-
But I LOVE butter. I LOVE cream cheese, and I LOVE excess.
Can we say NINCOMPOOP?
-
[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]NINCOMPOOP![/move]
-
But I LOVE butter. I LOVE cream cheese, and I LOVE excess.
You left out whipped cream. ;D
-
And Sour Cream!
-
I LOVE whipped cream. Today, my friend Margaret gave me some freshly made cranberry muffins - let me TELL you how great they were.
Now I must be on my way to the screening. Keep the home fries burning until my returning. Let's not have it be like the other night where I came back after three hours and there were like six posts.
More PIZZA, more EXOTIC FOODS and more NINCOMPOOPS.
-
Ok, we'll shoot for seven posts. ;) :D ;D
-
So, Ginny, your going to be in the hotel across the street. Mind if I stop by and borrow a cup of mouthwash or something?
-
So, Ginny, your going to be in the hotel across the street. Mind if I stop by and borrow a cup of mouthwash or something?
Let's just hope it's not an Ace bandage you need to borrow after your ice skating!
-
Perish the thought! DR Elmoore said the hospital was where exactly?
-
Doing my part to reach seven posts before I leave for the night.
-
Here's a question. The Club for Trucks. Yea or Nay? I was thinking about getting one for Bonnie but do you think I really need one since she already has an alarm system?
-
Hi Penny. Are you feeling better?
-
Penny-I hope so. If not do so quickly.
Goodnight.
-
I am
-
goodnight, kidz
-
Well, at least we got our seven posts. I think.
Hi Penny! How's life in the big city?
-
I'm off to beddy bye. Bruce! Please send me a pdf of your Writer's Block ad real soon, okay? I'm putting the program together, before I get whizzed into the rehearsals... trying to get as much accomplished ahead of time, so I can just concentrate on my performance for once!
Danise - I do so look forward to meeting you and all my pals from Haineshisway!
(PS - I'm glad I've missed whatever sturm und drang appears to have wounded the community. What holds us together is our love of books and music and theater and movies and food and animals and and and... ah, well, families...)
-
Danise, The city is cold, but bright blue so oftern. Lots of birds - I think it will be an early Spring. Tomorrow I'm off to the park, to see the Installation!!
-
And so, to bed!
-
(Sheesh, not even 7:30 in LA...)
-
We have lots of Robin Red Breasts so I guess they are heading up your way!
I know how you feel. I am tired as well so I think I shall retire as well!
Have a good evening all!
-
Great news DRMATTHEW!
DR PENNYO is getting her show together. What an exciting time. I wish I was going to New York.....
DRJMK - I found another twin for you....Neal Gabler of (gulp) FOX News....I did a double take when he came on today. I had seen him before and kept thinking he looked liked someone.......
Supposed to be rainy tomorrow - but that's okay. Almost time for a new MAD Tv!
-
I had pepperoni pizza today - with sausage....my FAVORITE.
I have been thinking about prescient movies today after seeing a few.
I think the most chillingly accurate have been:
NETWORK and A FACE IN THE CROWD.
Any others from the HHW peanut gallery?
-

You mean there's more than one? :D Just looked up Gabler on Google. He's considerably thinner than I am in my current bloated state (though one of the nice side effects of this illness has been I've dropped a few pounds, LOL).

I might go see "The Gates" the public art installation Elmore mentioned earlier. One of the friends with whom I saw theatre this afternoon stopped by to see it on her way to meet me. She said what she saw was beautiful. It's up for 16 days.
I had a wonderful lunch with two friends from work. We went to Nick's on 9th Avenue and had Greek food. We split an appetizer of four dips and slices of pita. Don't know what the dips were (I couldn't spell them anyway since they are Greek names). They were delicious. I had a very good spinach pie, one friend had moussaka and the other had a gyro platter. We skipped dessert. We then went to see The Musical of Musicals - The Musical! I enjoyed it just as much as I did when I saw it earlier this year. Hoorah for funny, well-done and well-written material.
My friends then departed and I had two hours before my next theatrical encounter so I had a slice of pepperoni pizza (very easy to get in New York) and a root beer soda. Then I went to the best bakery in town, The Little Pie Shop, on 43rd Street and 9th Avenue. I know Elmore and other NYers have mentioned it. I had a wonderful slice of sour cream walnut apple pie and a cup of steaming hot coffee. A wonderful way to top off good meals. Unfortunately, I then had to attend the play at Playwrights Horizons. It wasn't horrible but just let me say IMHO (in my humble opinion and others are free to feel differently) Christopher Shinn writes turgid, overwrought melodrama filled with people for whom I care not a whit. I've seen three of his plays now and I'm not as impressed as the critics. There were good actors on stage but I just sat there for 90 minutes quietly looking at my watch wondering when it would end. There was no intermission (smart people they!) so I didn't have a chance to leave. Oh, well. I've sat through worse.
I did get a ticket to Spamalot for March 1st, no discount. Oh, well. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do. I also got a ticket for All Shook Up, the new Elvis Presley jukebox musical. I'll be seeing that March 2nd. I got a cheap ticket for that. I will be going to the ticket office on Monday afternoon to purchase my ticket for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Tickets go on sale then. I have a discount coupon but they also have low prices for the balcony, $20 so I may try for balcony seats at the Hilton Theatre(formerly known as the Ford Center for the Performing Arts home to 42nd Street and Ragtime and other shows). I saw the show in London and had a grand time. I'm looking forward to seeing how well it transfers from across the pond. I missed a chance to get a ticket for the new William Finn show, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. It got rave reviews and has sold out for the rest of it's run. It's at a subscription theatre, Second Stage and it's a limited run anyway. It only plays through March 6th. Between the raves and the subscription base all tickets are gone. The talks to move it to Broadway are in progress right now and it will probably happen soon. I saw some clips on the television reviews and it looks quite good. I will definitely see it if/when it moves.
TCB, so glad you have returned to our friendly environs!
And now, to bed.
-
DR Ben - The Little Pie Shop at 43rd and 9th is now on my list of places to visit next month.
'night, All.
-
My friend Jeff cooks the best barbecued chicken pizza I've ever had. Put all the restaurant attempts around here to shame.
-
The talk about THE CHINA SYNDROME earlier made me remember how much I admired it when it was first released. I always thought it was a corking good thriller and still do. I've had a DVD of it for a long time and haven't picked it for revisiting, but I should. Lemmon and Fonda were both absolutely brilliant in it.
-
I'm encouraged about the new musicals upcoming in NYC. The first half of the season has been pretty pathetic, but sounds like we're in for a terrific spring.
Just got around to reading VARIETY's review of SPAMALOT when it premiered in Chicago. It wasn't a flat-out rave. The reviewer mentioned the first act closing as being pretty weak and the opening number and first part of the show playing uncertainly before it caught fire. But he had lots of praise for David Hyde-Pierce (whose big number he said was Tony-friendly, whatever that means), Chris Sieber, and Michael McGrath. Had reserved praise for Sara Ramirez (thought she was great when she wasn't overacting) and thought Tim Curry played Arthur as a total camp.
Did the producers take it to another tryout city before coming to NYC?
-
Enjoyed last night's MONK. Larry Miller had an amusing supporting role as a bottom feeder/ambulance chasing attorney. This week's plot was a Columbo-style mystery where we saw the crime committed and then watched Monk gather the clues to put it all together. Not my favorite kind of mystery, but it was OK.
-
Nope, it was Chicago and now it's here. It begins performances Monday.
-
I hope to see The Gates tomorrow, then go to the Cowgirl Hall of Fame for a country-fried Valentine's dinner with the Gal.
I had the Taco Bell "mexican pizza" which was really just a quesadilla in pizza's clothing. Nothing special, I'm afraid, but pizza-esque.
-
BTW, I got my MGM/UA Class Settlement paperwork today and Jed was indeed correct. You either get a replacement or the money, but you have to return the DVD. I still have probably 20 or 30 that I'll never watch again, so I'm happy to get $200+ back in my pocket.
-
...VARIETY's review ... thought Tim Curry played Arthur as a total camp.
Isn't calling Tim Curry a total camp redundant?
(Nightmare casting: Tim Curry and Mandy Patinkin in ... anything!!!)
-
DR Ben - The Little Pie Shop at 43rd and 9th is now on my list of places to visit next month.
Actually, DRGinny, the Little Pie Shop is on 43rd between 9th and 10th Avenues, and the best bakery in the City.
I'm back from a lovely evening with my friend Bruce Pomahac. We watched tacky teen comedies and feasted on Chinese food. I'm ready to crash. G'night, all!
-
Good Evening!
Well, I only fell asleep twice during today's show. And only once while I was playing! ;)
And I must definitely get to bed before 4:00am tonight. Doing two shows on only four hours of sleep... But I did get my workout in the morning. Monday is my "day off" - in more ways than usual this Monday - and I'm soooo looking forward to it!
-
Pizza Report:
I did end up going to Matchbox between shows. Brett, the drummer, was not able to join me since he ended up having to go into work between shows, so I dined solo.
I started off with the rather generous "small" house salad. Field greens, pecorino cheese, dried cherries, and grape tomatoes topped off with a reduced balsamic vinegar vinaigrette. Oh, and it was topped with a "frico crisp"- a parmesan "cracker" - my favorite part of the salad!
And now the PIZZA-
I order their Spicy Meatball Pizza - their amazing thin crust, spicy tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, bacon and their house-made spicy meatballs. Red pepper flakes galore! And sooo good. I ordered a small which is six slices. I should have stopped at three or four of the slices, but I went ahead and finished the whole thing. They really make a wonderful pie there, and their cheese and toppings are fresh and first-rate.
End of Pizza Report.
-
After dinner, I walked around Chinatown for a few then headed over to the B&N near Ford's Theatre - just a few blocks away. I went ahead and splurged Rachel York debut album - which is a "B&N Exclusive" - and on sale too. Then I took a walk over to Olsson's Books and Records - D.C.'s oldest independent bookstore chain/store - over by the Shakespeare Theatre, where I picked up two copies of Michael Buble's new CD - one for me, and one for my parents for Valentine's Day.
...Then it was back on the subway back to the theatre...
-
DR Danise - The ice skating rink at Rockefeller Center can get quite crazy-busy at times. And since the week of Penny's opening is also a Spring Break Week for a lot of colleges...
I like the rink in Central Park, but I'm not sure just how late in the season it stays open.
I don't ice skate. At all. Mainly because I have wide feet, and the rental skates end up crushing my feet. However, when Steve and I went to NYC about three years ago, we went ahead and went skating in Central Park. Neither of us had been on skates in years. I ended up hugging the wall the whole time. Steve actually made it around a few times. Then he fell. He landed on his left arm/elbow. He was in some pain, but he didn't feel anything had broken, so we just headed up to Popover Cafe for some food, and then back to our hotel. And he took a lot of Advil alternating with Tylenol. Well... A few days later once we were back home, he finally say his doctor. It turned out he had fractured his elbow. No cast, but he did wear a brace/sling for a few days. And to this day, he can still use his elbow to forecast the weather. ;)
But, DR Danise... Of course, you will not fall down. But if you do, I do know how to check for a fractured elbow now.
;)
-
DR Ginny - I believe the names of the food you mentioned were:
skewered/barbecued pork - ihaw-ihaw
noodle dish - pancit - The national dish of the Phillipines. Hundreds, if not thousands of variations.
skinny eggrolls - lumpia shanghai - My favorite. I may even pick up a 100 (they're small) before tomorrow's matinee at my godmother's restaurant to bring in for the show.
-
"The Gates" are only up for 16 days... Hmm... I wonder if I can make it up there in the next two weeks...
-
Well curiosity is a terrible thing.
DR JOSE - never never NEVER mention this again. :P
Here is a link to a description of the precedure you saw the news story about.
No pictures, but not for the faint of heart. :-X

Just one more word on this subject:
Manscaping
:o
;D
-
DR Matthew - Congratulations!
-
When I was in Australia, I did partake of an "Aussie Burger". I loved the fried egg! Of course, I had to learn to ask for "tomato sauce" instead of "ketchup". However, I had to slightly deconstruct the burger in order to eat it. All those toppings really added some "height".
*The Johnny Rockets chain will serve your hamburger with a fried egg if you like.
-
I'm back, and to prove it, I'm here. And a nice number of postings I got to read. But what is this WUSSBURGERING at nine o'clock on a Saturday night? Saturday night is a partay night not a WUSSBURGER night.
I saw some amazing stuff tonight, but just was too tired to stick it out, plus the Jacuzzi was calling me. Luckily, I had my cell phone on and I got the call.
NINCOMPOOP!

What if you're left handed? I'm not, but my mother was, and she always was more comfortable doing things in the reverse direction. She even knitted left handed. Shouldn't she have been allowed to have the tips of her chopsticks facing right?

So I've been an ignorant American barbarian all this time. *sigh*
I have yet to check out the article myself, but...
Does it mention that when you eat a piece of nigiri you're supposed to only dip the fish in the soy sauce and not the rice. At least that's how I was instructed to eat when I dined at a rather upscale sushi restaurant.
-It was so upscale - and "pure" - that the chef would only serve bottled water to go with the meals. No tap water - he said it interfered with the flavors of the fish. And he made the local DC news one time when he evicted a pair of diners who did not want to pay for repeated refills of the bottled water. They had gone into the bathroom and filled their glasses from sink!
After all the "attention", tap water is now offered to diners.
And, yes, the wasabi is supposed to be dabbed on to taste.
Have you ever had freshly-grated-at-your-table wasabi? WOW! Quite a difference from the reconstituted powder stuff.
Oh, and then there's the "tradition" of sushi chefs being men do to the different body temperatures of women. -Although, women have started to be certified as sushi chefs now. In fact, there are some quite notable ones in NYC.
-
DR Danise - So glad you enjoyed Hairspray. Is the former soap opera guy - I can't remember his name right now - still playing Link on the tour?
-
Watching SNL right now...
Actually, not too bad. The Love Songs of T.T. & Mario segment had me laughing out loud a couple of times.
And, I have to say Jason Bateman has grown up nicely. ;)
-
Jacuzzi is heating up.
-
Once again it's the ATTACK OF THE WUSSBURGERS. No posts in an hour.
I had a lovely Jacuzzi and am quite relaxed right now.
-
So are you going to tell us about the TV shows in the notes?
-
DRJOSE - I said NEVER mention it again! LOL
-
It finally happened! :o :o :o :o :o :o
-
Does this look like DR JMK or whut?! ;D
(http://www.columbia.edu/cu/news/vforum/03/gossip_news/nealGabler.jpg)
-
Yes, I talk extensively about the TV shows I saw this evening. Notes are written, word of the day is chosen, so I certainly haven't been WUSSBURGERING on a Saturday night.
-
Wonderful.....2 a.m. here....and Hell has, as you see, frozen over. So I must go to bed.

Does this look like DR JMK or whut?! ;D

He looks like DR JMK with worry lines. :-\

Just saying a quick hello, and goodnight since I have been so errant and truant lately. I hope everyone is doing well and having loads of fun. I highly doubt I will get a chance to get back online until next Sunday so I'll ask for some good opening night vibes for this Thursday now. A big thank you to DRelmore for his opening night package he sent. I promise to be good and not open it until Thursday. :) I also hate to end on a downer but I don't think I'll be able to make it in March to New York. I just found out today that I have to have my wisdom teeth cut out within the next month or so. The good news that comes along with the wisdom teeth removal is that the braces which I have had to wear since 7th grade will be coming off. JOY OH JOY! (And I have just shown how juvenile I am compared to everyone else. :P) Night all!
-
People come, people go, like Grand Hotel.
-
Welcome five GUESTS. We're talkin' about WUSSBURGERS.
-
Wussburgers and pizza:
We need more PIZZA descriptions.
One time I made an all-white cheese pizza...crust with a thin layer of cream cheese, a bit of parmesan cheese, then alfredo sauce with lots of garlic, then shredded mozzarella and Monterey jack cheeses. It was a little heavy and a bit bland, but not too bad. The next time I made it (I've only made it twice), I put both alfredo and red sauce on for a sort of marbled effect, but I didn't mix them up into a pink sauce. That would have been most unseemly. ::)
-
The red sauce (but not too much of it) made it a much better pizza. :)
