iPod is on.  Currently playing, Mancini's beautiful love music from The Great Imposter.  That's one movie I'd love to have on DVD.  One of Mancini's great scores.

PULCHRITUDE, baby, PULCHRITUDE.

Match me, Sidney.  Name that movie.

Well, the site has been overtaken by WUSSBURGERS.  No fun, no fun at all.  And here I was going to give out a sparkling prize to the first to name that film for "Match me, Sidney."  However, the offer expired on account of WUSSBURGERS.

Well, I guess since we can't get any ACTION around here, I'll just toddle off to the bedroom environment.

I always liked the theme from "The Great Imposter". The only version I have is by pop group "The Piltdown Men". The Fleetwoods sang a a song called "The Great Imposter" which is listed as "The Theme from" but I think Mr Whitburn got that wrong.  Both songs were out at about the same time.(1961). Can anyone let me know if this is so.

Thursday night, I watched the NBC line up:  "Joey," "Will & Grace" and "The Apprentice."  At 10:00 p.m., I switched over to ABC-Family and watched "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"  This show is never not funny!  At 11:00, I switched to Comedy Central to watch "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" but I fell asleep very shortly after it started!  I can't remember the last time I fell asleep watching TV out in my living room...especially with my housemate's cat laying on my chest and purring!  But I was asleep and for about an hour and a half.  Who'da thunk it?

The vocal Great Imposter is an imposter - nothing to do with the film's theme, which has never had lyrics - nor has the love theme.  Both themes are available on several Mancini collections.

Tomovoz (or OzDerek...or anyone), I just won on eBay, the DVD to the stage musical version of "The Man from Snowy River."  It was truly an impulse bid.  Has anyone seen (or heard) this?  Is it any good?  My sister liked the TV series.  I wonder if she'll like the musical (but it is for me). ::)

PULCHRITUDE:  Sophia Loren is the epitome of PULCHRITUDE.

I saw CHARLY a few years ago...And I must say that it did not hold up well for me at all.  And I agree about all the unnecessary camera crap...but then a lot of people were doing that junk back in the "the media is the message", psychodelic  (that can't be spelt right) days.  I remember sitting through this film twice when I first saw it. Thinking it so great.  But when I saw it recently, I did not think Robertson's performance or the film held up well at all.

But even back when it first came out I thought his maybe the weakest performance of an exceptional strong year.  Peter O'Toole gave a far better performance in LION IN WINTER; Alan Arkin was heart-breaking in THE HEART IS THE LONELY HUNTER; Alan Bates was brilliant in THE FIXER; I'd have to see Ron Moody's performance in Oliver again to see whether it was better than Robertson, but given how sort of on-the-nose and obvious I found Charly the last time, my guess would be that Moody was better than Robertson too. And the hippie interlude in the movie was just silly...

I think it's one of those movie's really stuck in its time period...which a lot of sixties movies are. They just show their age more than a lot of films and their revelancy or resonance is very time-specific as opposed to timeless...or ageless...

I remember there being much gossip at the time that it was felt Robertson "bought" his Oscar. His performance really doesn't hold up to the others in his category.

Good morning, all!   Another Barnes & Noble Friday, but this morning I really want to stay home and do other things.

Yesterday afternoon, my goddaughter's mother and I  made the trek to the Bronx to see Charlotte take on the role of Caliban in THE TEMPEST at the Horace Mann School.  I'm happy to report that she was the best thing in the performance and her entrance, after the exposition and the storm at sea, was the first burst of energy to wake me up.  Due to a heavier number of girls involved in the production, several men's roles - Antonio, Sebastian, Stephano, and the sailors - were played by women.  Dee Dee, who played Stephano, one of the three comics with Charlotte and Charles as Trinculo, won hands down the award for best performance by a woman playing a man, and the comics kicked ass!  They were great.

Charlotte's going to attend a Shakespeare program in England this summer at Oxford; she's definitely inherited the talent genes from her parents.  I'm quite proud of her.

Media alert:  I have no idea!  I have three Netflix DVDs sitting here, and a ton of new compact discs, but I've made no decisions.

Shockheaded Peter is a strange but very well done adaptation of a series of gruesome German children's stories from the 19th Century. It's about misbehaving and just plain bad children who ultimately meet terrible ends (a child who plays with matches, a child who insists on flying using an umbrella, etc.) Most of the cast came over from the Olivier award winning production done in 2002. It's billed as a musical but it's not in the usual sense. There is a song about each child and how they misbehaved and died for their actions. The music is performed by a group called Tiger Lillies. They have quite a collection of music, much of it theatre, film and dance-related. They tour around the world and have quite a following. Some of the other cast also perform on instruments during the show. It's all quite well done and the gruesome aspects are so over the top or obviously fake (think orange and red petticoats for flame as the match player catches on fire) as to not be alarming at all, though this is certainly not a show for young children. VixMom take note. Apparently the idea of the original stories was to show children what would happen if they misbehaved. Ouch! All in all, though, an excellent production, especially if you like theatre off the beaten track (though the new Little Shubert Theatre on 42nd Street near 9th Avenue is quite the nice home).

Listening to BBC 3 right now. It's 1pm in London and the Lunchtime Concert will begin after the news. Don't know what else I will be listening to at this moment. We will be on Long Island this weekend. We may watch things on DVD or video but no plans at the moment. Perhaps if there is something interesting at the library we will check it out for the weekend. We will return to NYC on Monday. I probably won't be around this here site much on the weekend so I'll have to catch up on Tuesday.

I'll be in and out during the day before the train to Ronkonoma.

Later.

I displayed my dolls, OHINA-SAMA, for The Girl’s Day, in the livingroom this afternooon. It’s a quite traditional custom to display the speciall dolls on The Girl’s Day, March 3rd(actually the dolls are displayed before that holiday), wishing one’s daughter’s health and happieness.  Most of Japanese girls have their own dolls and display them even after they have grown up (like me) , just for enjoying it. And I have been keeping to do it every year as my mother did it for me when I was child. Now I do it for myself!  My dolls came down to me from my mother and my mother took them from my mother’s mother and my mother’s mother took……So my dolls are very old, perhaps over one hadred years.  Regrettably people who keep this traditional custom become increasingly fewer nowadays.

Thanks for the heads up! I had received an ad for this and was wondering whether or not to try it... We also received an ad for Chitty Citty Bang Bang -- does any one have any "preview info" about this one for me?

We are going in to the city on Wednesday ( I promised the Vixter a trip the The Amercian Girl Place)   and I think we will pop up to The Virginia Theatre and get tickets to Little Women (for March 23 hopefully)

Here's an interesting article:

http://www.nber.org/papers/W9853
"Beauty in the Classroom: Professors' Pulchritude and Putative Pedagogical Productivity"

"Adjusted for many other determinants, beauty affects earnings; but does it lead directly to the differences in productivity that we believe generate earnings differences? We take a large sample of student instructional ratings for a group of university professors, acquire six independent measures of their beauty and a number of other descriptors of them and their classes. Instructors who are viewed as better looking receive higher instructional ratings, with the impact of a move from the 10th to the 90th percentile of beauty being substantial. This impact exists within university departments and even within particular courses, and is larger for male than for female instructors. Disentangling whether this outcome represents productivity or discrimination is, as with the issue generally, probably impossible."

DR elmore - Congratulations to Charlotte on her performance!

DR vixmom - I hope you and your daughter have a delightful time in the city on Wednesday.

Friday media report:

CD (car) audiobook, bio of John Adams (he and John Quincy have just arrived in France).  In a quirky coincidence, my audio book and the book I'm reading with my eyes, Antonia Fraser's Marie Antoinette: The Journey, are intersecting - same time, same place, historical figures appearing in both.

DVD - more Marie Antoinette in The Affair of the Necklace.

iPod, as I type this - Chocolat soundtrack.

MEDIA CHECK:

CD: "Harlow" soundtrack - Carol Lynley version by Nelson Riddle & Al Ham

DVD - "Harlow" with Miss Carol Lynley, what a cheapjack, badly acted, atrociously photographed rip-off.  Miss Carol Lynley plays Jean Harlow as though she had a lifelong toothache or was always wearing shoes that were too small.

VHS - Frances Farmer on THIS IS YOUR LIFE, HOLLYWOOD'S MYSTERIES & SCANDALS, and 50 YEARS OF WFBM.

DR GINNY - Norma Shearer was on TCM this morning as MARIE ANTOINETTE.  I am not sure the real Marie and her dresses and court were anything quite as grand as MGM presented, but it is a fun movie to watch:

Hisaka-Great dolls!

JRand-I remember seeing FF on This is Your Life back when AMC was a watchable channel and showed things like that. My memory is of the host being a bit condescending, but I could be wrong. Anyways, it was the intro to FF for me.

My media check:
DVD-Penn & Teller show
Haven't listened to too much music lately as we had a houseguest staying in the Music Library (aka guestroom). I think "Andy Williams sings Steve Allen" is still on the turntable.

TOD:

Car cassette player:  audio book "The Reptile Room", which I only just realized today is read by  DR Charles Pogue's neighbor Mr. Tim Curry (I knew the voice sounded familiar!)

DVD player:

Eyes Wide Shut - I thought this was crap (I hope you all enjoyed my well thought out and carefully worded critique)

Garden State - I enjoyed this, but wish that some of the deleted scenes had been left in and some of the scenes left in had been deleted (what am I all of the sudden, Steven Spielberg?)

The Day after Tomorrow: the science was garbage and the plot was formulatic and predicatable but the effects were phenomenol.

Cassette Player at home, the Vixter and  a few of her schoolmates practicing their numbers for the SCMEA (Suffolk County Music Educators Association) Festival she will be participating in,  in March.  This is the second year she was selected to participate

VHS at home: Last nights CSI..DH had to go to a wake last night, so I taped it for him. I saw bits and pieces of it, but will watch it with him later tonight.  We sometimes watch CSI as a family, DH thinks the show encourages the Vixter analytical (spelling?)  thinking and interest in science and math..but I don't think she 'll be watching this particular episode!!

CD player at work...nothing!! That must be remedied! I must rummage thorugh my drawers and see what CD's I have on hand...

Anyone remember the short-lived cable channel THE NOSTALGIA NETWORK? This was on my cable back in the mid-to-late 80s. Man, I wish it still existed. They showed episodes of the BOSTON BLACKIE TV series and forgotten movies like A COLD WIND IN AUGUST.  They even had an American Bandstand-like show with people dancing to "oldies".

It was too good to last.

Vixmom, I highly recommend Chitty. Of course, this is based on the London production which Anthony and I saw in December of 2003. I hope the current production is as much fun. We loved it. We were in the 4th row of the Palladium Theatre in London and it took us for a grand ride. It was a perfect Christmas Eve spectacle. The tickets here are bit steep in price, between $55 and $100, though the very last row of the Hilton Theatre (formerly known as the Ford Center for the Performing Arts and before that it was two separate theatres, the Lyric and the Apollo) does have $20 tickets. Bring a pair of binoculars and have a good time, or splurge on a higher priced ticket. I bought a $20 ticket on Monday when the box office opened. I'm seeing the show on Tuesday, April 12th at 7pm. It begins previews on March 27th and opens on April 28th. There is a good cast and if it's half as good as it was in London, you and the Vixter will have a great time.

I agree about Cliff Robertson's performance in CHARLY. I didn't think then and I don't think now it deserved to win over the likes of Peter O'Toole, Alan Bates, Alan Arkin, or Ron Moody. For me, it would be tough to select between O'Toole and Arkin, for they are both so unforgettable in their respective films, and their performances are worlds apart: O'Toole's filled with masterful words spoken so beautifully and Arkin's silent with the most expressive eyes and gestures imaginable.

well that's what make a horse race!!   I felt it was just an excuse to have a lot of beautiful women walk around starkers .. I hated Tom Cruise's dialogue.. he repeated everything anybody said to him like one of those toy parrots from Radio Shack (which reminds me of a funny story)

I thought Nicole Kidman's reaction to Tom Cruises'  appreciation of her pulchritude was SO ridiculous and unbelievable... and that was what drove a lot of the film... the whole masquerade shop thing was nutty... but then DH liked the movie so maybe it's a different perspective  based upon gender..

I gave myself over to strangeness and mystery of the circumstances. The in-over-your-head quality that surrounded the latter part of the film had me on the edge of my seat.

What can I say - I liked it very much.

Funny Radio Shack repeating parrot story:

Our friend  Paul has a grandma who is of quite advance years, God bless her.  One Christmas , a couple of years ago, she was visiting him , and he has one of those parrots that record what you say and say it back to you .  Well the dear lady has extremely poor eyesight now,and thought it was a real parrot.  She spent the entire afternoon talking to it, and essentially herself)

"MY, what a pretty bird"
"MY, what a pretty bird"

Well isn't he clever?

Charly- No doubt, Matt H and BK. I remember they showed us this movie in Junior High, and the "far out" sequences had kids in stitiches. I have a theory though, and that is not just that Cliff's performance wasn't that good in this movie, but that the guy just isn't a very good actor. Unlike someone like, say, Hackman, who always INHABITS his characters, I never get the sense of Cliff being deeply inside his characters. Just my opinion though.

Condenscending is a polite word for Ralph Edwards on that particular episode of THIS IS YOUR LIFE, DR RODZINSKI.  I don't think he listened to one word Frances said, he just plowed right on asking his inane questions...."Did you ever take dope?"  "Why did you marriage to Leif fail?"  :'(

Wow we had excitement in town this morning.  The Stuff Store, a sort of Flea Market and Antique Store burned up.  Or I guess I should say, burned down.  And we were just there Saturday!  :o

And what a lovely way to start a very rainy day, by seeing dear reader Hisaka's beautiful dolls.  Normally, when we talk about dolls here it means something completely different.

It's gray, and it's raining, but that shall not deter me from having a bright, shiny day.

PULCHRITUDE!

I wanted to love Eyes Wide Shut, and I did enjoy some of its hypnotic quality.  But I didn't like Nicole OR Tom, once they began "acting".  I did like the very uncomfortably long scene at the party (the beginning of the film, where that creepy guy is dancing with Nicole).  I also liked the scene at the costume shop, with Leelee Sobieski in her UNDERPANTS.  I also liked all the scenes of Cruise wandering the London version of Greenwich Village.  But I didn't like any of the breast-beating scenes between Kidman and Cruise - I found them excruciating to watch.

Alan Arkin IS brilliant in THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER. To me, he's one of the great actors, but didn't get enough great roles. My feeling is he did too many character, accented ethnic-types (RUSSIANS ARE COMING, POPI) that don't wear well, when he has fabulous expression and delivery when playing less-caricatured stuff.

His Yossarian in CATCH-22 is amazing.  Funny in IN-LAWS and FIRE SALE. Recent stuff like MOTHER NIGHT and GATTACA have shown his talents nicely.

Good Morning!

Well, I woke up, put on my running clothes - including the thermal "liner" since it's cold outside - walked briskly to the park, ran one mile - I finally broke the 10:00 mark, 9:54! - then turned around and headed back home.

It was just too cold and windy.  If I had brought my gloves, I might have kept running, but at least I had my ear muffs - I just love my 180s!  I also think the running and the cold re-aggravated the muscle-thing in my right side.  I had a few moments of discomfort on the walk back to the apartment, but I'm feeling better now.  So, as much as I'd like to keep up the exercise regime right now, I think I need to take a day or two off to let my muscle recuperate.  It appears I have strained my psoas muscle on my right side.  I was hoping this was one of those things I could just work through, but my body - and my psoas - seems to be telling me otherwise.

Otherwise, it's been a good day so far.  And even though it is cold, the sun is out, and the sky is clear.

DR Hisaka - Beautiful dolls!

When I was much younger, I had a set of origami papers that could be folded into various types of dolls. The papers were printed with faces, hands, clothing, etc.  The designs made it made it very easy to determine if you were folding the folds correctly.  I have not seen a set of papers like those in about 25 years!  Every time I come across a store selling origami papers, I look for a set, but I have yet to find them again.

Does anyone know if the Origami Center is still open in New York City?  I had a few addresses for it in the past, but I never actually found the place - even though it was referenced in many books and articles.  Maybe in a few weeks...

Are their traditional foods for Girls Day?  I know Boys Day does have some foods and traditional decorations.

I need to walk up to VCU and see if tickets are still available for tomorrow night's piano recital by Andreas Haefliger.  It's been soooo long since I've heard a live, classical piano recital.  My alma mater has a great recital series - and a great hall for it too.  Best of all, top ticket price is only $25.00.  -Then most of these artists head up to the Kennedy Center Terrace Theatre where the ticket prices double.  Very much the cultural bargain.

-Oh, and I just remembered I need to replace one of my brake lights - driver's side.  Steve noticed it was out the other night.

JRand-I remember seeing FF on This is Your Life back when AMC was a watchable channel and showed things like that. My memory is of the host being a bit condescending, but I could be wrong. Anyways, it was the intro to FF for me.

Yes, Rodzinski, that was one of the AMC "This is Your Life:  The Classics" episodes that ran (and ran and ran) in 1990.  Unfortunately it's edited and cuts out one of the best moments:  at the end the ever-smarmy Mr. Ralph Edwards informs FF that her brother Wes couldn't come due to military obligations and FF's arched-eyebrowed reaction is, as BK would say, cherche.  For some reason they also cut out a whole little segment at the end with her getting even more than the fabulous 1958 Edsel.  :)

'No, indeed,' said Alice.  'What sort of a dance is it?'

'Why,' said the Gryphon, 'you first form into a line along the sea-shore--'

'Two lines!' cried the Mock Turtle.  'Seals, turtles, salmon, and so on; then, when you've cleared all the jelly-fish out of the way--'

'THAT generally takes some time,' interrupted the Gryphon.

    '--you advance twice--'

'Each with a lobster as a partner!' cried the Gryphon.

'Of course,' the Mock Turtle said:  'advance twice, set to partners--'

'--change lobsters, and retire in same order,' continued the Gryphon.

'Then, you know,' the Mock Turtle went on, 'you throw the--'

'The lobsters!' shouted the Gryphon, with a bound into the air.

'--as far out to sea as you can--'

'Swim after them!' screamed the Gryphon.

'Turn a somersault in the sea!' cried the Mock Turtle, capering wildly about.

'Back to land again, and that's all the first figure,' said the Mock Turtle, suddenly dropping his voice; and the two creatures, who had been jumping about like mad things all this time, sat down again very sadly and quietly, and looked at Alice.

'It must be a very pretty dance,' said Alice timidly.

My Joe and I want to thank all the DRs for their wonderful vibes (and BK for his xylophones) for Angel Jim.

Alas, the Justice (?) System has done what it usually does and postponed everything.  I got a call last night from Jim's Mom saying the Parole Hearing had been put off another month.  No reason given.

Speculation:

1.  They only got his attorney's report a week ago and want to read it thoroughly.  (This would be good.)

2.  They read his attorney's report and want to investigate it and sic some appropriate State agency on the lying, brutal, evil upholders of the law.  (This would be better, but pigs don't fly.)

3.  They are just slow and incompetent.  (This is realistic.)

4.  They want to make him suffer another month.  (Naw!  Not consistent with American values, is it now?)

In any case sometime next month I'll probably be asking for more vibes, more xylophones, perhaps a timpany or two.  Thanks, all.

Not to continue on a downer, but I think I should explain the situation in Jim's case, although I alluded to it a bit last year.  The only charge is "resisting arrest"--for what crime?  Wasn't charged with one.

Jim cannot say what happened, because he was in a coma for two days afterward.  He now has two metal plates in his head.

The police stories are evidently all different:  He stepped out of the car and fell on the pavement.  They found him there when they found his car.  The tooth fairy did it.  Whatever.  So perhaps the members of the Parole Board, if they are not totally brain-dead, can speculate on what happened.

I never got the whole Cliff Robertson thing either.  I always found him merely servicable and, aside from CHARLY, I never went out of my way to go see a "Cliff Robertson" film.

I agree with MATT H. that O'Toole and Arkin were the front runners in the best actor stakes that year, but I think Alan Bates was a real interesting dark horse.  I'd like to see THE FIXER again...I remember it as being a rather remarkable performance (DAvid Warner was very good too).

Oddly enough, I  first saw THE FIXER in college, on the bottom half of a double-bill at THE Opera House, a run-down theatre in Lexington, Kentucky, where you could see two shows for 65 cents.  It's where I also first saw PRIVATE LIFE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, ROYAL HUNT OF THE SUN, and SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SHERIFF.

In the earlier part of the century, the Opera House had been the major theatrical touring house...where people like the Barrymores played.  In the mid-seventies, it was renovated and became a major theatre again...where touring shows play and local companies do work.

My Sherlock Holmes play, THE EBONY APE, had its premiere there in the late eighties.  So it's nice to be a part of the legacy.  But still!  Two films for 65 cents!  Them was the days!

When I first met DH, besides being swept away by his sexy English accent, I discovered he could speak French which, as we all know, is the language of love...

I asked him to speak to me in French and he whispered. "Vos yeux sont comme les choux, vos oreilles comme des têtes de poissons"  I was enraptured.

Several days later I found out what it meant and gave hima good thumping!!!

Condenscending is a polite word for Ralph Edwards on that particular episode of THIS IS YOUR LIFE,

He was that way with everyone! In the resurrected version of the show, I thought Bette Davis was going to slug him several times during the broadcast because he was so sickening to her. Treated her like she was retarded or something.

And bk was right several weeks ago when he mentioned watching this. The cues for songs are just SO obvious: "I Put My Hand In," "Put on Your Sunday Clothes," "Ribbons Down My Back," "It Only Takes a Moment." Good lord!

Good Afternoon!

Well, I made it up to school around 2:15, but then discovered that the Box Office is only open from 11:00-2:00.  Ah, well...  There was no sign saying tomorrow's recital was sold out, so I'll just check for tickets at 6:30 when the box office opens - before we head to dinner.

-Oh, I remembered to change/repair/replace my brake light.  The blown out bulb looked really cool when I took it out.  It had a white swirl pattern as opposed to the normal black burned out "pattern".  I almost saved it.

Then I decided to take another walk up and down Carytown.  The sun was out, the temp was up a few more degrees, and my hip was feeling fine.  (I was thinking that maybe I should have attempted to run this afternoon instead of this morning.)  I made a stop into my favorite knick-knack/gift shop, and bought a few Christmas ornaments - 90% off!  And I also bought these cute/neat rings that are made out of rubber, and they light up and flash when you squeeze them.  Perfect gift for my nieces.

On the return trip back up the street, I made a stop into the local running store, and picked up a decent pair of insoles for my shoes.  -I just put them in and gave them a try... WOW!!!  Definitely worth the very minor investment.

-Oh, and I picked up a tray of the very yummilicious apple-bread-pudding at Montana Gold to bring to Steve's tonight for dinner.  -We'll be supping on his Maggiano's leftovers - spaghetti with meat sauce and Italian sausage. ;)  And I'll also be supplying the salad - mixed greens, chopped dates, dried cherries, and toasted almonds in a balsamic vinaigrette.

-And something tells me I'll be baking a cake tomorrow - ?!?!!? Must be baker's withdrawal.

;)

When we found a permanant home for Zeus, der Brucer was very clear when he said that six dogs were simply too many for us to take care of, that it was possible for us to give five the right amount of attention but six was over the limit.

So, of course, he's been contacted by the animal rescue people again; they want him (meaning us) to help foster dogs until they can find them homes again.

This came up last night.  Since some of the animal rescue people specialize in Dalmatians, I offhandedly replied that I wouldn't mind having another Dal in the house.

Der Brucer has actively been searching for another Dal on the Internet.

Heck, it'll be just one more mouth to feed, I guess.   :-\

Actually, Rodzinski, I enjoy the movie posters, books, and memorabilia more than I do the stars.  But I'm looking forward to seeing Monty Python icon, Carol Cleveland, and an old acting acquaintance of mine, Ian Abercrombie...who I worked with in my swan song as an actor.  It was in Crucifer of Blood at the Ahmanson Theatre out here with Charlton Heston playing Sherlock Holmes and Jeremy Brett playing Dr. Watson (and he was just as brilliant a Watson as he was a Holmes).  Ian played Inspector Lestrade.  I had a small role as a sailor who saw the giant rat of Sumatra and fainted in Holmes' study.  I also understudied several roles, including Ian's Lestrade.  The last time I saw Ian was years ago in Sam French's bookshop out here.

Back from the Courts show and lunch.  I cancelled the dinner tonight, because of the pouring rain.  She'd never get here on time and we'd be late and this restaurant gives away the table fifteen minutes after the reservation time.  We'll do it next week.

The Courts show was the least interesting I've been to, celebrity-wise.  Many of the same folks from the last time I did the show, i.e. Tiffany, Eddie Deezan, Clint Howard, etc.  The big draw and the only one with any kind of line was Jane Russell.   Doing the show on a Friday is the equivalent of doing it on Sunday, only with even less attendance.  When we arrived at twelve-thirty it was pretty empty.  It had a medium sized crowd when we left at two-thirty.  Many celebs were no shows (at least twenty to thiry empty tables with name plaques.

Here's who I remember:  The Sound of Music kids - Heather Menzies, Kym Karath and three others - but no Charmian Carr.  William Smith, star of many B movies.  Robert Culp, looking shockingly old.  Richard Herd, Edd "Kookie" Byrnes.  I know there were others, but that was the caliber for the most part.  The two most exciting things for me were meeting Miss Gale Storm (I bought her 1981 autobiography, which she inscribed beautifully), and best of all I finally, after all these years, met Miss Hayley Mills.  She had no one at her table at all (that's how poor attendance was), so I just got up my nerve and walked up to her.  I introduced myself and told her how hard I'd tried to get her on the Sherman Bros. album.  She remembered immediately (I'd sent a bunch of CDs for her to hear, but she didn't get them in time and they were forwarded on to her after she'd finished doing the show she was doing).  She called me from the East Coast and left a message, saying she was delighted to get the CDs and wanted to talk about doing the CD.  I called her right back, got a machine, and left a message.  We never did connect.

In any case, she was delightful - warm, cute as a button, and sweet as they come.  We talked about Dick Sherman a bit, and I told her that I was sorry we couldn't have her on the CD.  Tomorrow, if I can get to her, I may just give her a copy of Kritzer Time, so she can read all about herself.

... and of course, BK, you are right.  Bureau.  Not table.  My friend Duane was in that show, in the bell-ringing scene.

Anyone remember the Ozzie and Harriette episode where Ozzie takes a French course?  He has a terrible time remembering anything and finally comes away with one phrase, "La plume est sur le table."  "Great," he says.  "When am I ever going to use that?"

Of course, at the end of the show he is looking for his pen, and it is Harriette who says, "La plume est sur le table."

Could anyone make a low-key sitcom like that today?

How very sad to read about Brian Kelly.  Growing up without a father in the home, Mr. Kelly and Chuck Conners were my two imaginary fathers -- no, not as a couple!

I remember when he was so seriously injured in that accident while he was filming THE LOVE MACHINE.  Jacqueling Susann said at the time, that had Brian Kelly finished that film he would have become a superstar.  Having seen the film with John Phillip Law, I find that difficult to believe, but if anyone could have done something with that crap, it was Brian Kelly.

I also had a couple of security people come up to me, who remembered me from the last show I did.  Also, Eddie Deezen always remembers me, and a few others came up and said hey, including Eric Boardman, who is someone I hadn't met, but is friends with my pal Richard Jones.  I had a good time, but it was a disappointment.  Maybe tomorrow will be better.

I should be working on my writing is what's up, but I am watching TV instead.  I need to get 10 pages or so done tonight.  But it will be easy once I get started.  I've done three already that seem to be okay.

Whew!

That is SWEET about Sybil Jason. I'd say "what are the chances?" but that's just how it has been since I've been on this site.

What sort of writing are you working on? Do you write for Classic Images as well?

I forgot that Gail Storm was going to be there. I would love to meet her. One of these days I must join her internet fan club!

No Diane McBain! Maybe she will instead go to the April one!! I have been trying to get an interview with her for the longest time but she does not respond to my inquiries...of course I have no idea if she has even received them or not. How about Edd Byrnes? A no show? Scarlet Street wants me to interview him as well. I have his phone number but haven't called him yet.

All I can say is that if I am gonna spring for airfair and a hotel room there had better not be 30 empty tables when I arrive...I want to get some autographs!!

JRand54 should write for Classic Images! There is an actress in Idaho that he needs to be interviewing, if you ask me...although no one did ask me.

Yes, Brian Kelly was quite a man. I think he was my first crush. I just have such vivid memories of him on Flipper when I was just a wee sprig of a tad of a kid...now that I am older my visions of Brian Kelly are somewhat different! Heh, heh!

I wonder if folks demand their money back with so many empty tables. I noticed on the website they seemed to have had a few cancellations of a very recent nature, but not 30 cancellations.

Just returned from BECAUSE OF WINN DIXIE...oh my gosh, but I enjoyed that movie.

It is very sweet and heartwarming. It is funny without being at all vulgar, and the actress who played the little girl, Opal, was wonderful. And it also stars Cicely Tyson and Eva Marie Saint...I have never been a fan of either lady but they were sure good in this movie...and it seems very rare that movies nowdays have a lot of older people as main characters.

If you prefer your movies on the cynical side, you might not care for this one, but if you love dogs, or just nice feel good movies with a positive message then you will probably really enjoy it.

When I have attended the Court's shows in the past there are usually a good number of cancellations...most memorable for me was Yma Sumac, who I was looking forward to seeing...I wonder if she made it this time?

And there are usually a lot of guests who evidently didn't get on the list, but who just show up. I think you would enjoy going to this show a lot...there are always interesting guests, regardless.

Of course the east coast has it's share of good shows of this type as well.

Just saw in the paper today that Otto Plaschkes died.  Otto (or "Otty" as everyone called him) was a producer on Georgy Girl and Hopscotch as well as American film theatre movies, The Homecoming and Galileo.  He was also the line producer on my two Sherlock Holmes films I did in England with Ian Richardson, Hound of the Baskervilles and The Sign of Four.

Yma had a table - and was not there.

I think I would have heard if Harvey had any problems of any sort.  I spoke to him a couple of weeks ago and he was chipper and we laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more we laughed again.  I also spoke to the fellow who helps him with various things, and I think he would have mentioned something, too.  So, JMK, why don't you take that castrecl idiot to task.

In a bit of irony, I was just watching Georgy Girl yesterday - I TIVOd it the other night.  Very sweet film, and one forgets sometimes what a great debut it was for Lynn Redgrave.

Harlan Ellison sent home with THe Lovely Wife a CD for me of Columbia Record Dance Bands from 1925-1929.  Some interesting titles...Moonlight on the Ganges, Play Gypsies-Dance Gypsies, Frankfurter Sandwiches, Hoodle Dee Doo Dee Doodoo, Doing the Racoon (sounds like a dance we must do BK in the wee hours when the wussburgers are asleep)...among many others...

The only comment I'll make about ENTERPRISE is that they've started another multi-story arc tonight. I guess I did read last summer that this was going to be their plan for this season - few self contained episodes but not one that lasts the entire season like last year.

I'd rather have the self-contained stories. To be honest, the multi-part stories seem very padded to me.

As long as we are remembering the recently departed, Sammi Smith also passed away. She who had the largest hit with Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make it Through the Night".

The irony of that being when JoseS was stuck trying to think of a song the other night, I originally thought "Help Me Make it Through the Night" might be the song he was thinking of.

And THIRD WATCH and MEDICAL INVESTIGATION did a crossover story tonight as well. But since they back up to each other on NBC's lineup, it worked pretty seamlessly.

This sounds swell. I have "Doin' The Raccoon" by George Olsen and his band on vinyl in the RCA Victory Vintage Series "1928" LP. Don't know if this series made it to CD, but I have a rule of thumb where if I see the RCA Vintage Series logo (some grapes), I instantly buy because it is going to be good with extensive notes on the back sleeve.

Anyone watch Numbers this week? This is the second show I have seen and I think the concept is starting to where thin. Even when I heard about the show I thought the show was thin.

BUT Susan Egan was a guest star on the show. And the writer of the show tonight was also an Egan. I wonder if there is a connection.

I recorded NUMBERS and will see it tomorrow. With the three episodes that I've seen, I've gotten really tired of Judd Hirsch's father character. His only function seems to be to nag his two sons about not being married and producing grandchildren for him. That's worn thin for me.

Dinner report: I went in a German direction this time.  Pork loin chops, grilled with a mustard rub.  Brussels sprouts with vinegar.  Egg noodles sauced with butter, mushrooms, parsley and poppy seeds.

Der B liked it.  And the dogs made sure we won't have to wash the plates!  (Well, not much, at least.)

Here's something to try: it's called Guess the Dictator or Sit-Com Character.  (http://www.smalltime.com/dictator.html)

You can follow the instructions, or try something different.

The something different is to answer all the questions as if they are asking about you, yourself.

I found out that I am actually Jody, from Soap.

Hmmm, apparently I'm Jonathan from Who's the Boss?  Not sure that's a good thing...

Good Evening!

Back from Steve's... Nice dinner - those Maggiano's leftovers sure heat up nicely.  And I ended up adding the dried cherries and slivered almonds to the bread pudding instead of putting them in the salad.  Very yummy.

After dinner, I discovered that Steve has started to turn into a DIY television addict.  However, it's all "homework" and "research" for his new condo he just bought.  He's already lost some sleep since he signed the papers last week because he had paint colors running through his head!  ;)  So, we watched some TLC, HGTV, Discovery Home, etc...  The whole concept of Venetian plaster caught his attention.  He'll have about a six-week period to move in and get his new place set up, and he's just gathering ideas right now.

We'll be getting together tomorrow night to attend the piano recital, and I think I'm going to go ahead and cook dinner.  I think it would be good to use my pots and pans sometime this year already!  I also want to get a lot of cleaning done tomorrow: bathroom, kitchen, living room, etc.  That will most likely be my "workout" tomorrow.

DR JRand - Thanks for the link.  Close, but no cigar.  I have a few of those doll kits.  They are very nice, and some of the accessories are quite detailed.

The papers I had when I was younger had the faces, hands, etc., printed right on them.  You folded the single sheets of paper into the dolls/figures.  The doll kits use "bookmarks" as the body, and you fold the papers around them to make their clothes.  It's a traditional Japanese paper-craft - the proper name of which escapes me right now.

I particularly remember The Postman paper/fold.  It had a cap, and even a mail pouch!

Before I went to the theater, I stopped at home and there was a package for me!  The complete second season of "Star Trek:  The Original Series!"  I got it from Amazon.com's marketplace...sold by a third-party seller.  Including shipping, it cost less than Costco AND was factory sealed!  It was brand-spankin' new. ;D

Now I have the complete original series.  It's the only Star Trek series that I've bought any of.  I've really liked all the others, but they were all much too much expensive.  So I compromised and got the first and third seasons at Costco.  I didn't have enough money when the second season was available and was just able to get it for less!
