I got a terrific unsolicited FB review for THE LAST MONSTERS. Hope you don't mind my sharing.
Posted by Tim Williams.
Enjoying my new Kindle Fire, and today I read a two-act play, "The Last Monsters" by screenwriter, novelist, Hollywood publicist and Facebook Friend Michael B. Druxman. This mini-drama focuses on three great Hollywood Horror stars waiting in the wings to be called to appear in what amount to bit parts in the 1956 "B" thriller THE BLACK SLEEP--aged, frail recovered morphine addict Bela Lugosi, unknowingly on the verge of his death, grousing about his lower salary and a part without spoken lines; alcoholic Lon Chaney, Jr., fretting about getting his work in before he gets too drunk to perform and anxious about how the new Universal picture about his more famous father will depict his family; and the pragmatic, level-headed John Carradine, spouting Shakespeare and acting as referee between the other two, who don't exactly get along.
I was told once upon a time by another Facebook friend--correctly--that plays were meant to be seen performed and not simply "read" like books. But I found in the short time it took me to read this play that I had no trouble at all depicting the actual actors playing themselves--I could see their faces, and hear their unmistakable voices as I read, and experienced a deep sense of nostalgia in doing so.
It would be really wonderful, I think, to see this play performed by a really good cast, perhaps as part of an omnibus production with some of Druxman's other "Hollywood Legends" short plays. I think that would be an enjoyable evening...
Well, done, Michael!

Last night I continued down the anthology path with DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS, Amicus's first venture for which DR Jrand68's very own SUBOTSKY! penned the stories. My UK Blu-ray includes a worthy hour-long documentary on the history and the inspirations for these tales. I found a couple of the segments a bit overlong for the material, but hey. The framing story with Cushing and Lee and the other gentlemen on the train is amusing.
It's wonderful to finally have the original release intact, as opposed to the weird DVD one(s) with the German main titles and video-sourced end credits. Unfortunately, that's mitigated by the transfer's infamous heavy application of DNR, the wiping out of all evidence of film grain, so there's still that video "sheen" to the proceedings.
Tonight, back to my original favorite, ASYLUM, which I haven't seen in a decade or so. It should be most interesting to view, now that I'm much more familiar with the other Amicus offerings.

Break legs vibes for BK & Co. for a great show at the Autry tonight!
Ditto!
-
And, Good morning, all!
-
Another cold night has passed, with Annabelle under the blankets asleep at my knees and Thatch curled up at my chest on top of them. It limits my restless sleeping, but they seem to like it.
-
I'll work on How To Succeed . . . until around 4:00, then put it away and tidy my desk. Tomorrow I begin a week of receipts, tallies, accounting. Yes, it's IRS Hell! And that's no Amicus anthology. Welcome my horror.
-
Where are all my withholding forms is the big question.
-
HA! Now we're talking DR CHAS SMITH! Among my favorites if not my FAVORITE!!!!
-
Concert vibes for MR BK & Co.

Grammar alert!
In the notes today, MR BK split his infinitive.

Yes it was a great party last night.....7 - midnight! Much music and mirth....and the famous Barnabas Collins concoction. I have plenty left.....

JRand: Some grammarians think that is an obsolete rule invented by 18th-century teachers of Latin. Star Trek fans, probably! Till took :-\

-
YES DR DRUXY a fine review.....it is a good play and I hope it gets lots of productions!
-
Still she's marrying the son not the parents
And until a christening or burial you do not have to see them. Ever.
Well, they do live in the same area as the kids. Maybe.
-
We didn't meet Bryan's in-laws until the wedding. We had a nice time with them, even went out to dinner together. After returning home we attempted to continue to communicate. Sometimes they responded and then eventually not. Oh well. I do envy people who become family with their in-laws.
My parents and my in-law were not close but they did get along and occasionally got together. After my mother died my in-law often invited my father over for the Jewish holidays even though we weren't there.
-
In-laws can be such strange creatures.
-
ASYLUM — Done! And fun, as always. I definitely appreciated certain things in it more than before. A nice return.
-
Next up: It’s not Amicus, though you’d think so by the cast and crew. TALES THAT WITNESS MADNESS. Unfortunately, it gets low marks, but this will be my first time seeing it since ‘73 and I remember almost nothing of it.
Might watch it later this evening. If not, then tomorrow night.
Actually, there’s one more that I’d include in this batch — a later one (1981) that I never saw: THE MONSTER CLUB. And I don’t have it here so it’ll have to wait.
-
A heads up for anyone who’s interested:
I was just reminded that tonight is “RENT: LIVE!”, 8 pm on FOX.
As a dinosaur who has never seen any incarnation of it, I’ll DVR this one to watch sometime.
-
I've packed up How to Succeed . . . for the week, and Annabelle helped me clean off my work table and prepare for my tax prep. Tonight I will go through my paid statements and organize them.
-

I was just reminded that tonight is “RENT: LIVE!”, 8 pm on FOX.
As a dinosaur who has never seen any incarnation of it, I’ll DVR this one to watch sometime.
I saw the original Broadway production of Rent several times, from the original cast through several cast replacements. I'm very fond of the show, but I'm passing on the broadcast with its interminable commercial breaks.
-
And on the bad news front, when I picked up the post in my mailbox there was a "pay up or get out" letter from one of the head honchos of the real estate office managing my building.
-
Oh no!
-
As regards Rent, the previous 'live' shows had very short breaks. On our cable service we have it on demand for a few weeks. I enjoyed Legend as JC--sexiest savior I've seen!
-
I can believe that they are airing RENT opposite the S.A.G. Awards.
Thankfully, you can record one of them.
-
DR TCB is sailing the open seas.
-
Bad news, Elmore. Hope everything works out quickly.
-
It's been a long day. Not enough naps.
-
I'm watching Pete Kelly's Blues, directed by and starring Jack Webb, with a fun cast that includes Lee Marvin, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald, Janet Leigh and some might fine music. The script is fairly Disney and the production looks like it was filmed on a budget. But who cares?
-
Ella sang Hard-Hearted Hannah. Peggy Lee is wonderful. If only the script would go away.

Last night, Jane asked, "How many authors did you see there?" My answer: I don't know exactly. I met at least 10 authors (when I got their autographs), but there were many more there. I also saw a few others as I walked by their presentations, but I didn't go into any of those events.

Great picture, Jrand!
-
Where is everybody tonight?
-
Watching Rent?
-
Watching the SAG?
-
I don't know what I'm going to watch next.
-
I've got a three-hour drama about the Reformation all in German.
-
Last night after my ALA Midwinter conference in Seattle, I saw Green Book with my friend Margo, and we both thoroughly enjoyed it! I thought it would go in certain directions, but it didn't, and that pleasantly surprised me. I had forgotten that I'd heard that it was "inspired by true events." I was really surprised when they said that the two men remained friend for the rest of their lives and died within months of each other in 2013.
-
And the Magnificent Ambersons. I wish I liked the book better, but Tarkington's casual racism is a little too much for me to stomach. I couldn't make it through. I had no active sympathy for any of the characters, but I did have an active dislike of too many of them. The movie is more successful, IMO.
-
Glad to read it, George. I do want to see that. If I ever have time to get to a movie theater again.
-
Where is everybody tonight?
I'm recording the SAG Awards because I'm making MP3 files of YouTube videos that will be used as sound effects for a play that a friend of mine directing. Hannah (the friend) only asked me to help on Friday, and she only sent me the links to the videos at about 10:30 last night (when I was at the movies), and a LOT of them are 10-hour videos of campfires noises, or river sounds, or waterfall sounds, so having to download 10-hour MP4 videos, then convert them to WAV files to edit, then crop them and save them as MP3 files is taking FOREVER! :o
-
And of these videos (there are 24 total), about 18 or so are very long, and she only needs only 2 to 10 minutes of each! The other six or so are short and much more manageable.
-
We didn't meet Bryan's in-laws until the wedding. We had a nice time with them, even went out to dinner together. After returning home we attempted to continue to communicate. Sometimes they responded and then eventually not. Oh well. I do envy people who become family with their in-laws.

When my sister and her now late ex met and got married, both sets of parents became friends. Even after they got divorced and to this day, they remained friends.

Talking to friends on messenger. We are making plans for their 4th of July visit :)
-
The couple who met us in Vegas for my birthday along with another good friend and her boyfriend we haven't met. Three of us lived in the same building when we were first married. The husband of the 3rd friend passed away when he was only 54. After all these years she has a boyfriend. We are extremely happy for her.

All I remember of the movie is "I Can Sing A Rainbow." I love Ella, but she's no actress.

I have no idea but this reminds me I need to put some notes together for my book group discussion tomorrow. Since I was reading BORN A CRIME on the plane I didn't take notes at the time. I highly recommend this memoir.

She had maybe two lines of dialogue and two songs. And you're right.

Nope...at least, none of the authors whose autographs I got. ::) There were a few throughout the place that I'd heard of, but none of those were there. And none of them are authors that I regularly read.

I only heard about the Green Book from Antiques Roadshow. I think a couple of people had them valued. Not incredibly valuable, but historically important.

The first episode of Reformation was excellent. The actor playing Martin Luther holds everything together. Will hopefully have time tomorrow night to finish it up.
The only hard part is that German television is much more progressive than American TV, so the scenes of medieval torture were hard to take.
-
It's time for bed. Good night, all.

Good evening.

Sorry to have been E & T.

I have been traveling.

But considering the weather, I might as well be home in Washington.

Hi, Tom.
-
When we arrived in Tampa on Saturday afternoon, it was overcast, but not bad.
Where are you right now?
-
Tom, you WILL have a wonderful SAFE trip! I has spoken!
-
This morning when I got up (at ten) it was pouring. Saturday night was my first sleep in two days, except a couple of naps on the plane.
-
5!!!!!
-
Hello, George.
-
It rained all day in Tampa and continued to rain when we boarded the ship, although I am sure that flies in the face of all Holland America TV commercials!
-
It was raining so hard that during the water-logged muster drill, they allowed frail me and companion, Ken, to wait out the drill indoors.

Tonight we are out to sea, and it remains rainy, but the seas are very calm — so far.
-
Fortunately, I was able to watch the Pro Bowl in one of the bars, and even more fortunately I was unable to watch RENT.
-
We arrive ar Key West tomorrow morning at 11:00; which means no getting up early. Yeah!!

That would have been interesting. I belive there was also a Jewish version of the Green Book.

But considering the weather, I might as well be home in Washington.
Oh no. Is the sea rough? Vibes the weather improves.

POSSIBLE SPOILER TO A STAR IS BORN!
I have a friend with a daughter who has attempted suicide 3 times now. Today she posted on facebook how much she enjoyed A Star is Born until the ending. She asked for friends to please warn her if there is a suicide in a movie. I have not watched any of the versions of this film because of the alcoholism and suicide. With 3 remakes it surprised me there are people out there who do not know what the story is about.

That's terrible about your friend's daughter. It's great that she survived, though.

Yes. Once again she is in an excellent place for treatment. I just hope this time she suceeds. She was good for such a long time before this last setback.

I just now set my DVD burner to record Rent Live.

I'll go to bed before it's finished, so I'll work on it tomorrow night.

I thought it started at 8?

You're right. The broadcast started at 8:00 and ended at 11:00. I'm now recording the show onto my DVD burner from my Comcast DVR.

Back from a hugely long day and I'm exhausted. But both concerts went really well - full houses for both, lots of really big laughs for the patter (and some unscripted patter, too), and wonderful musicianship and all that great Morricone music. Both audiences loved it. For me, I would have cut two numbers out of each act - in fact, I insisted we cut one for the second show and that really helped the first act. So, the evening was a bit longer than I like - with intermission about two-hours and twenty minutes.

After the second show, several of us went to a local eatery. I hadn't really eaten anything during the day save for a couple of those bite-sized Snickers and Milky Way things. I had a Caesar salad and a hickory, bacon cheddar burger that was very good - and a few soggy fries. It was fun. I honestly was worried whether I'd have any voice at all for the second show - between the song I did and all that yakking for thirty minutes or however long my stuff was, I was all in vocally. But we had 100 minutes to rest between shows and I just kept my mouth shut and then had three sips of hot tea. But I got through the second show just fine, and my song was even better. Go know.

Guess I should write some notes now.

Congrats on the successful shows, BK!

Oh, okay.
-
I tossed and turned and moaned and groaned until I realized that I forgot to take my pain pills.
-
Congratulations, BK, on the successful show and equally successful voice.

Now I will try again to sleep.

Good night, Tom.
