Well, back in August, I contributed to an Indiegogo campaign (https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/alldocube-x-tablet-for-high-quality-entertainment/x/5266254#/) for a new tablet.  It finally arrived yesterday!  I've been working to set it up and to just get used to it.  The keyboard is the one thing about it that I'd like to change.  I did download a new keyboard.  Now, I just need to figure out how to switch to it.

I have not received my 1099 from my union pension, so I called them yesterday to check on it.  An unsympathetic recording informed me they did not have to send them out before Jan. 31, and they would not respond to inquiries before Feb. 13.  I hope that will not be a problem for my Monday tax appointment.

Well, Facebook has blocked me again for 30 days for calling Sarah Huckabee Sanders "lying white trash."  They claim it violates their community standards on hate speech:
To help keep Facebook safe, we sometimes block certain content and actions. If you think we’ve made a mistake, please let us know. While we aren’t able to review individual reports, the feedback you provide will help us improve the ways we keep Facebook safe.

So, I tried to let them know, and wrote: How does "white trash" violate your cockamamie community standards?  I grew up in a white trash family.  Instead of simply saying "you're blocked for 30 days," why don't you lay out the words you've decided violate your delicate sensibilities?

Here's the kicker: because I'm blocked, I cannot send my reply.

Vixmom:  only a light dusting of snow in the driveway.  I hope you left your furnace on.  Ours is cranked and the first floor can't get above 68.  Partly because we put in the outside basement entrance without insulating the basement wall.

The Carrolls once were using a friend's cottage in Yachats OR on the coast. Fortunately.  We had the heat on, but most other houses there were empty in January and it never got below freezing there ... except that year.  Burst pipes all over.

I should let other DRs know that in 2007 when we were in St. Croix vixmom discovered a leak in our basement and saved us from disaster. Love ya, vixmom.

DR Elmore:    Oy!!!

Oy frickin' vey, not again.

I'm afraid they have your number.

And of course it's unfair. Totally arbitrary. Luck of the draw. Their "alogorithms" catch one thing and not another. I only rarely am exposed to it because I carefully limit my journeys through Facebook, but it's obvious there is so much vile speech there, daily, to which your remarks can't begin to compare.

Yesterday someone asked: DR Laura, are you watching The Masked Singer? Everyone thinks Donny Osmond is on the show.

He is 100% the peacock. I sort of love this show. But I would prefer it if there were new characters/contestants on every week.  After the first two weeks when you know who everybody is it is not as exciting to watch.

We left the furnace on but I lowered the temp on the second floor to 60, I hope that was not a mistake.  The upstairs bathroom (5x5) doesn't have its own source of heat and is a dormer so it sticks out from the back of the house.  I did leave the door open and the sink cabinet door open.  Also, Vixdad turned off the water to the house ( not the furnace hot water system though)

Post by: ChasSmith on February 01, 2019, 07:47:21 AM
Okay, here's a doozy. Last night's dream, which I didn't even remember until it popped back into my head an hour after I'd been up. It's a variation on the traditional musician's or actor's nightmare about being completely unprepared to play or conduct or act in something that's just about to begin. In this one, however, I'm not playing -- I'm page turning for the gal who is, and only for one number.

Her keyboard and other equipment are on the main floor of the fairly large mid-century red toned auditorium. She's set up down in front, in the far side aisle on audience right, and there are one or two other people getting set up down there between her and the stage. It's unclear what they're playing or doing, but probably something like bass and drums, with various other electronic equipment involved.

Of all the things to be performed, there's one song for which she requires a page turner, and that's my only responsibility in the whole concert or whatever it is. So just minutes before the performance, I'm standing there attempting to understand exactly how the music goes, and how I'm supposed to execute my duties...because it seems the occasion is pretty formal, I'm dressed formally, and though (in real life) I've done plenty of expert page turning, there's apparently stuff to figure out here about how I'm supposed to enter, leave, when and where to sit or stand, and how to otherwise comport myself. I'm trying to look over the music which is not going too well, and I'm having trouble holding her attention in the heat of these last few moments before curtain.

Next thing I know, I'm in the outside corridor on audience right, realizing that either it's time for the number, or that I've just missed it or that I'll be holding everything up as I get in there. There follows one of those horrible dream attempts at getting where you need to be in a hurry, which takes absurdly long. For some reason I'm entering from the back of the hall and having to navigate through people, but finally I'm down there, apologizing for being late. Then it seems we've just done the song and I have indeed screwed up how I was supposed to exit or not exit or something. I'm hopeful that it didn't ultimately spoil anything, and finally she and I are talking. At this point I'm reminded that her face is ever so slightly off-kilter and she has only one eye, which at first I thought was in the middle, over her nose, but then I see that it's her right eye and that the left one had been either long ago surgically closed, or that maybe she never had the other eye in the first place. Anyway, we seem to be talking it over and things are okay, but the general confusion reigns until I mercifully wake up.

Oh my, that was a long one!

Smoke on your pipe and put that in.

I can explain this much:

This person was clearly based on someone I'd known on a superficial basis some 25 years ago who was blind (bingo!). She was never in music, but she excelled in a high tech fields involving computers and other technology and accessibility. We recently heard that she's been fighting a losing battle with a horrible cancer, and she'd been on my mind.

Several people I know posted they were blocked or warned yesterday and each instance was for calling Ms. Sanders white trash.  Every day, people call each other in very personal terms terrible things on Facebook - that's fine.  Every one of these blocks and messages should be screen shot because they are really violating first amendment rights here and there is a class action lawsuit in the making.

Intetesting, especially as I have to get a new tablet.

Jane, so far I recommend it.  Mainly for the price.  Even though I got it at an early bird option of $219, the full price is only $269.  And compared to the newest Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 (they both have the exact same hi-def screen and 64GB of internal memory...which is why I really why I wanted this), it's about a third of the price as others for essentially the same thing.  The only drawback is that it can't stream hi-def content.  If you download hi-def files, then those will look beautiful, but for things like Netflix, it can only stream the standard def versions.  You can find out a lot if you read through the early comments of the Indiegogo campaign page, but you have to scroll through a lot of comments to get that far back.  but since I don't have Netflix, it wasn't a concern for me.

I guess the town is not the main attraction for the area.

You are comparing it to a 10" tablet?  I need an 8" again and I mostly use mine to read on.  I keep the sound turned off, don't watch videos on it very often, and never take photos.  I post and check email & facebook, that is about it.  I read some reviews of tablets and they said the best screen for reading in a bright light is the Samsung tab A (of the small tablets).

Samsung has one option that the iPad doesn't have, something that drives me crazy when I am typing on my phone.  I can go backwards to delete letters but not forward as I can with Samsung.  What about your new tablet?

The built-in keyboard on this new Alldocube X tablet doesn't have arrow keys, only a backspace key, which is VERY annoying.  That's why I was looking to see if another keyboard (app?) could be installed.  I didn't get much of a chance to do some research, so hopefully I can find out more this weekend.  Otherwise, I currently have the 10.5" Samsung Tab S, and I really like that, but I wanted more internal memory, so I got this.  But I also really like the arrow keys on my Samsung Tab S.

I don't think of you as a shopper so I don't think that would happen.  The salon is expensive, massages & hair styling, etc.   I think the biggest onboard expense can be drinks and the extra restaurants that charge.  Alaska is a shorter cruise so maybe one extra restaurant as a treat and the rest is included.  You can buy a drink package but we don't drink enough soda to make it worth the price and since I am fussy, the alcohol options are not what I want.  We only order one drink a day.  You can figure out what the cost might be before booking a trip.  If you like wine, instead of ordering by the glass there is usually an option to purchase a bottle and then request it wherever you are dining.

The big extra expense is the tours.  For Alaska you would want to go on at least one hike.  Even then you could just stay in the towns and save money.

If I could say any cruise it would be Alaska.

I would say you are correct.  It is important to remember that any beverage, other than coffee, tea, or milk at meals is going to cost you.  I don’t mind the tap water onboard, but a lot of people can’t drink it, so they end up buying the bottled water, which really adds up.

Also, most of the soda packages give you unlimited soda on tap (not cans) from the various bars.  That can be a pain if you want to keep soda in your cabin.

That's terrible, Larry! >:(
.

I wonder if they consider white trash to be a racist term and are blocking on thatbasis

That's terrible, Larry! >:(
.

I wonder if they consider white trash to be a racist term and are blocking on thatbasis

Recalls to me that Phoenix Times interview with Barbara Harris, "Barbara Harris Knew Bill Clinton Was White Trash"

Then I watched a new Netflix movie - Velvet Buzzsaw, a totally weird and wacky art world "thriller."  Not much of a thriller, more of a horror movie, which anyone can see coming in the first thirty minutes.  It doesn't add up to much and it thinks it's funnier than it is, but the performances are fun and it moves right along.

I guess that says something about a person's interests the most famous use of the words "white trash" is in that Barbara Harris article.
:)

The article is cited a bit for her saying the problem with theater for her was that she loved developing a show and rehearsing, and didn't like playing show over and over once it was frozen.

I had a medical scare that'd prompted me to make an appointment for Monday, and now the symptoms have left.

I love the online info which basically said it could just need a pill, or alternatively, you could die tomorrow.

Trying to decide whether to keep the appointment, since it's the first use of the 2019 deductible.
