Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of yesterday, and now it is time for you to post until yesterday's cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ETESIAN!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
Listening to music.
-
Did you get my e-mail?
-
First post after
BK jan!
-
T.O.D.
Who actually writes the overture for a musical? And when? Is it the composer, or the orchestrator or the arranger? Is it written at the same time as the rest of the score, or do they wait to see which songs are successful?
Dumb question, I know, but I have always wondered.
-
Goodnight, George.
-
My previous post updated! ;)
-
Good night, Tom.
-
Overtures are usually the province of the orchestrator.
-
Did you get my e-mail?
Oops, I need to look at the messages here!
-
Can anyone tell me what it means when an actor also has "producer" credits on a tv show?
-
So I was happily sleeping and the phone rang at 3:36 am
-
No one in the other side but now I am awake
-
Good morning, all!
-
I was up especially early since I will see my barber at Radio City before I head over to help Joshie at City Center.

DR TCB, here's what I can tell you:
In the past, when shows went out of town for tryouts, the overture used in the tryouts was later cut, so that the "official" overture was not written until just before the show opened on Broadway. This was because the tryout overtures usually included material that was cut during previews. The original preview overture often ended up as the Entr'Acte. There is a claim that Russell Bennett scored the overture to The King & I early, but the overture includes "I Have Dreamed," which was written late in previews. Sometimes the overture was sketched out by the dance arranger and then given to the orchestrators. In the case of The Roar of the Greasepaint, Philip Lang did the show's orchestrations, but Russell Bennett wrote the Broadway overture. In a lot of musicals, the orchestrator composed the framework, and the songs inside the framework were the dance arrangements within the show.
The overture to Gypsy was the first thing written by the orchestrators, and Jule Styne did not see it until it was finished. He asked them to cut one song from it, and I've forgotten now what the song was. Leonard Bernstein composed the overture to Candide, but i would bet he had plenty of thoughts about Wonderful Town. He supposedly hated the overture to On the Town, so I'm guessing he was considered too inexperienced at the time for anyone to care what he thought.
Sometimes the show's overture changed between the Broadway opening and the national tours. "I Enjoy Being a Girl" was added to the Flower Drum Song overture because it became a hit, and I believe the same thing happened with "The Party's Over" being added to Bells Are Ringing.
-
DR vixmom, please check your messages.

Elmore, done and answered
-
Good morning, all.
-
How about the Hello, Dolly! overture? And was it never played in the original Broadway run?
-
Well, here's another crap of a weather forecast. Snow tonight, topped by ice and rain.
Thank GAWD it's supposed to get up to 52 degrees tomorrow...which begins my ten-day commute to the place where they pick their feet.
-

I have no idea, since the one in the original vocal score has never been played, but it's most likely Philip Lang's, or one of his assistants. Each recording seems to have a different overture. I think Larry Blank wrote the one for Channing's last revival.
-
I tallied it up. When my IRS return lands, I will have no money left when all the outstanding bills are paid. God damn!
-
In olden days, I needed two hours to get up, do whatever, and leave the apartment. I've discovered with two cats it's impossible. I need 2-1/2 to 3 hours now. I just moved my barber appointment to tomorrow at 10:00. I cannot judge travel time these days since the buses seem to run on whim, not schedule.
-
George, cool story about the bird cage 😊
-
Nice photo too.
-
DR Jan sometimes when the evening conversation is moving quickly DR TCB will miss a question. Actually this can happen with anyone at anytime.
-
I should get moving in case our company is up.
-
Have a nice day.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Off to be a pinhead in a few.
-
My guess is that DR TCB doesn't get his maryjane at the Dollar Tree.
-
I think I will write to the Walt Disney Studios and tell them I liked the car in The Misadventures of Merlin Jones.
-
Someone said DR LAURA was a bully!
-
I got Birdy Barnum another owl to hang on the OTHER side of his cage....to replace the ladybug which was a BIG flop.
The owl is a big success....he is telling it ALL about life and his fortunes....he still enjoys talking to the original owl, but the new one, which is identical has most of his attention today.
-
I love the GYPSY and CANDIDE overtures....and I also like the overture from GOLDEN RAINBOW.....
-
Wednesday morning greetings! We had some snow overnight that's melting now and making a slushy mess. Richard and I are letting it melt a bit before we head out to do some errands.
-
Ran my errands and paid a couple of ugly bills.
Next up: marking up the Dolly! books for tomorrow night's orchestra rehearsal -- where we'll be playing that published overture.
-
Good afternoon!
-
Thanks for the links regarding the birdcage, DR George! Fun!
-
Well, there's about 2 inches of snow. Time to panic ! It is going to be icy before it turns to rain later today, so I guess that's why the schools and government buildings are closed. My Buffalo relatives and friends would be amazed at the TV reporting. It's like we've never had snow before!

My pleasure!

I'm up, I'm up - a little over eight hours of sleep.

Well.....how could I be so remiss in our discussion of sex kittens yesterday as to leave out two of my favorites:
Miss Lee Remick in A FACE IN THE CROWD and ANATOMY OF A MURDER
and
Miss Joey Heatherton in TWILIGHT OF HONOR and WHERE LOVE HAS GONE
-
Overtures
On the 20th Century

No one mentioned the great Tuesday Weld!
-
I am home from a strange day at City Center.
-
Holy moley, YES -- Jane Fonda and Tuesday Weld.
-
Okay, here's a question.
"Put On Your Sunday Clothes"
Swing 8ths, straight 8ths, or both as warranted?
-
If THAT discussion doesn't get us to at least page fifty-three, I don't know what will.
-

Swing those eighths.
-
Good afternoon.
-
I got some antibiotics today for a sinus infection. So I'll feel better in a couple of days.
-

Swing those eighths.
The question mainly applies to the main theme.
Certain hits and later passages are very obviously straight eighth material.
-
The original run of Dolly up until Pearl Bailey played with no overture - Gower preferred no overture and so do I.
-
Work session went well, picked up packages, did some banking.
-
Just made some stroganoff (basically) but instead of chicken today I tried some cube steak - we'll see how that is momentarily.
-
Now I'm hungry.

There was never a performed overture to Hello, Dolly! I believe the published vocal score includes that info in a footnote.
-
I'm having pizza for the first time in months. Excellent!
-
Vibes for DR Laura.

Yup

~~~Ditto!!~~~
-
Thanks. I'll be fine. I gave it 15 days. Before now, I'm sure they would have told me it was just a cold that needs time.
-
But I haven't seen my little cutie in over two weeks. The pharmacist said to wait three days before being around him.
-
I remember there being no overture when I saw it with Ginger Rogers, then *I think* with Channing on the first tour. I wish I could say there was zero doubt in my mind, but if either of those had contradicted the note in the vocal score it would hopefully have left its mark on me.
I’m sorry to say we’re playing it at the college. I suspect many groups do, just like all the absolute fools who insist on including the one for West Side Story...and then conduct it abysmally. (I played in one like that. Horrible.)
-
Health vibes for Laura
-
Ya bully you
-
We had a couple of inches of the cold white stuff here today
-
Home again, home again, jiggity jig.
-
After work I came home and did a quick clearing of the isthmus and the stoop
-
Three deadly trees are pollenating the air. The acupuncture treatment went OK. I was supposed to lie face down for the 20 minutes. It got a little claustrophobic.
-
I go back on Friday.
-
I totally typed "path" please tell me how these four letters became isthmus
-
From Maine down to the isthmus
Yes, that's what I want for Christmas!
-
Then I drove to meet my friend fir a paint night event
-
It was supposed to start at 7
-
When I arrived at 6:50 nothing was set up yet and there were about 10 people hanging around looking for the artist
-
By 7:20 the restaurant manager found the artists phone number and git her on the phone
-
She was at their other location
-
I was all for getting in the car and heading over there but was outvoted by the others ( my friend was on my side)
-
by time the artist broke down the set up, stashed it all in her car and drove to the restaurant on the icy roads it was nearly 8:30
-
She said it would take her about 30 minutes to reset
-
Do we sound start the 2 hour class until about 9
-
At that point we all decided to cancel
-
So she got her supervisor on the phone who promised us all a refund as well as a free class
-
You had a bit of an adventure last night, Vixmom!
-
So she got her supervisor on the phone who promised us all a refund as well as a free class
That's good customer service.
-
And on that note (C-Sharp...for Customer Service...see what I did there?? ;) ), I'm outta here. Time to go home and ketchup on some TV watching.
Be back later.
-
Watching the rest of Mikey and Nicky and some of the extras. Easy to see why the film flopped. Easier to see why it's being hailed as a masterpiece. The acting is superb. The camerawork is astonishing.
-
I never saw May's earliest movie, A New Leaf. I should correct that.
-
Porgy and Bess is part of the new Metropolitan Opera in Cinemas. Have to wait a year from now to see, but it should be fun. Also looking forward to Wozzeck and Akhnaten.
-
Still listening to an old radio interview with Peter Falk. He sounds like he was a great person.
-
And with that, good night, all.
-
Gave the new galley another once-over and of course found four more hyphen to em dash things and a spacing thing. So irritating, because who knows if I haven't missed more that I'll never catch.
-
I totally typed "path" please tell me how these four letters became isthmus
;D
-
That made more sense unless it was far away.
-
I have a pain in my side. I have no idea what caused it.
-
It hurts to type soooo.
-
'night
I'd love to see Porgy and Bess and Akhnaten. I saw Satyagraha in a Metropolitan Opera in Cinemas showing several years ago. :)
Oh, no!
~~~Feel Better Vibes for Jane!!~~~

Good evening.
-
Hi, Tom.
-
Page 4? Really?
-
Hi, George.
-
This hunting for a place to buy is very draining.
-
I find a place I really like, and before I can even make an offer, it is off the market.
-
And this isn’t even the busy season for buying homes.
-
I find a place I really like, and before I can even make an offer, it is off the market.
That's too bad. :-\
-
Are you using a realtor, or just looking on your own?
-
That's weird. I thought my previous post was #118, but I just realized that it's #116.
-
As we all know, it's not the first time that something like that has happened.
-
And now, since we're so close...
-
5!!!!!
-
Are you using a realtor, or just looking on your own?
I have a realtor.
-
She is very cool.
-
She said, “Hey, if it takes a year to find you the perfect place, so be it.”
-
But it is exhausting.
-
And for the first time in five years, I have bitten off all of my fingernails.
-
Today I went to the old actors’ lunch for the first time in a while.
-
Tom, keep your fingers out of your mouth! They have no nutritional value. Get a piece of fruit instead.
-

My sister had a good realtor when she wanted to sell her house.
-
It took her over a year to sell it, but it eventually sold and for what she wanted.
-
She still had her previous house that she had kept as a rental.
-
Fortunately, the renters were going to leave anyway, so that worked out for her and she was able to move back into that house.
-

I try, Jan, but when I get nervous.....
-
And there is just something about spending a couple hundred thousand dollars that makes me nervous.
-
Well, this is unusual. BK's new notes are up, but there's no new day of posts...yet.
-
And there is just something about spending a couple hundred thousand dollars that makes me nervous.
I hear ya!
-
I just found another condo, but before I could send the email to my realtor, it switched to pending.

How rude! >:(
-
Well, it looks like BK went to bed without opening up a new day for posts. :-\
