Well, you've read the notes, the notes have reported, you are in the loop, report-wise, and now it is time for you to post until The Haines Cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: LOQUACIOUS!
Something every hainsie/kimlet understands.
-
Welcome seven GUESTS. We're askin' questions. Be LOQUACIOUS!
-
Well, unfortunately, I am not feeling very LOQUACIOUS tonight, so I will just have to LOQUACE tomorrow.
-
Tonight is for the loquacious. I cannot believe that the dapper and dashing Marc Chapeaux is not feeling loaquaciously loquacious.
Welcome eight GUESTS. I'm sure at least one of our GUESTS is LOQUACIOUS.
-
Ann, for heaven's sake be LOQUACIOUS!
I'm dancing the Black Bottom at the moment.
-
Welcome nine GUESTS. They're multiplying, like rabbits.
-
Loquacious, now there's a word I like!
I was productive today, it was good. I did three loads of laundry, the dishes, made a large pot of chowder, and went to the gym. Go me.
-
A Large Pot of Chowder - that's the title of my next novel.
-
Was this home made chowder and, if so, we must have complete details.
-
Dear BK: A Question!
I know you are not fond of the recent remakes of classic films, finding them unnecessary and poor in comparison to the originals.
Still, I have to wonder, is there a film out there that you wish someone would remake? That should have had the right stuff to be a classic, but somehow didn't and might, just might, be right for one of today's filmmakers to try to rework?
-
This was homemade chowder indeed. A lovely mix of potatoes, corn, turkey sasuage, green peppers, chopped onion, garlic, milk, cream, and assorted seasonings. Turned out splendidly.
-
I hope you froze some and that it is winging its way to me as I type.
-
if there is any left over, I shall. Last Thursday I made a yummlicious batch of tuna pasta salad. I'd never made it on my own before, and I must say, it turned out beautifully. I am developing into quite a cook...at least by my standards :)
-

Sure. Man of La Mancha, a truly horrid film. And I know some will disagree, but Hello, Dolly!
-
I'm doing the Turkey Trot. My BK question today:
Is it true that that famous star of stage, screen, and bathroom walls, Marc Chapeaux, will be doing a duet of "Pepe" with Mr. Haines on his new album?
-
I believe that could happen. I will tell you this: There might just be a song from that film on the album. But not the title song.
-
So, I'm doing the Black Bottom, Pogue is doing the Turkey Trot, Ann is doing the Chowder and we're all being so LOQUCIOUS!
-
And it's still raining.
-
Sure. Man of La Mancha, a truly horrid film. And I know some will disagree, but Hello, Dolly!
I don't disagree at all, they both need remaking. I'd add Mame to the list.
This begs the question, or plurally questions: Who would you like to see star in the films, and (a harder question) who could direct?
-
We may get snow on Thursday. I've only used my snow shovel once all winter!
-
We have much shopping and travelling to do tomorrow, so I am elsewherizing. G'night.
-
Well, directing is the problem, isn't it. And, of course, there's the pesky problem of stars for vehicles like these.
-
So, I'm doing the Black Bottom, Pogue is doing the Turkey Trot, Ann is doing the Chowder and we're all being so LOQUCIOUS!
This makes me think of Black Bottom Cupcakes. Has anyone ever heard of these? Delicious chocolate cupcakes with cream cheese and mini chocolate chips...mmmm so very yummy.
-
Never heard of it, but I'd be eating one now if I had one to eat.
-
A lovely old lady across the street used to always make me a batch for my birthday. She also had a huge sandbox that used to attract all the neighborhood kids. She still lives there, I believe.
-
Black Bottom Cupcakes
For a tiny treat, I make about 48 of these in gem-size muffin tins; the same batter produces 24 regular cupcakes.
FILLING
8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 egg
1/3 cup sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
6 oz. chocolate chips
Beat everything together until smooth, then add in the chips. Set aside.
BATTER
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cocoa
1 cup water
1 tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. vanilla
1/3 cup vegetable oil
I'll bet Jose has made 'em at some point :)
-
I'm really wanting to eat something completely yummilicious tomorrow, but I shall be good, because I'm supping with our very own Vinnie on Thursday night, and my raincheck dinner at Crustacean is Friday night, and I'll be there no matter how much rain there is.
-
That recipe seems very confoosin' (as Li'l Abner would say). I don't know from soft cream cheese - do you put it in the oven?
-
Ann is being quite LOQUACIOUS tonight.
-
And one for Mahler.
-
No, just let it sit at room temperature until it's soft
-
Holy moley on rye - page two!
I must now toddle off to the bedroom environment.
-
No, just let it sit at room temperature until it's soft
I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole or even a five-foot czech.
-
One would hope not! :o
Black Bottom Cupcakes
DR Ann, do you bake these cupcakes? What temperature? How long?? Enquiring minds want to know!!
-
Yesterday, JRand wrote:
Okay. I won a gift certificate that I will never get to use.
I think DR GEORGE has an account. If you do DR GEORGE let me know.
From what I can remember, I used to have an iTunes account. I signed up for a trial period, but didn't continue with it. They probably still have my e-mail address.
If it's a gift certificate, why can't you use it...if you don't mind me asking? ::)
-
I don't think I'd mind trying it out again...for the first time. ;D
-
An interesting side note to the film Suddenly: When the colorized the film, who ever did the work made Frank Sinatra's eyes brown!
-
I must of missed this, but................
Who is Marc Chapeaux and why are we talking about him?

DRMichael Shayne, it seems to be a running joke between our host and one of our DRs.
Good morning, all! I dreamed last night that I was in Paris working on a production of JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS, so I have all these songs running through my mind this morning. Listening to JEEPERS CREEPERS didn't help; I still hear "Sons of. . ." and "Amsterdam."
I have to take a music stand I've been falling over for the past 25 years down to Rodgers & Hammerstein this morning and donate it to their music staff. THE KING AND I continues well except for a major hang-up over a chord in "Shall We Dance?" that brought me to the edge of frustration yesterday. I may have a question later.
-
I saw La Cage last night. It's a nice production but not outstanding. Perhaps my memories are tempered by time but I remember the first productino being more exciting, more fully realized. I'm not sure exactly what I'm trying to say except that it's missing a spark. There are wonderful moments and I am a big fan of Daniel Davis, who plays Georges. I've seen him in many things over the past few years and he's always so good and different and effortless in bringing you the core of the character. Perhaps it's because things have changed so much over 21/22 years (La Cage opened in late 1983). What was then out of the ordinary (for many people) is now, in spite of some people's efforts to deny or change the fact, commonplace. Also, in seeing it 20 years later, I notice, IMHO (in my humble opinion), how weak the book is. The son, even though he comes around at the end, is a silly little twit and Dindon (the turkey) is a caricature. The show is really a playlet about Georges and Albin with other stuff put in around them to flesh out the show. As I said, it's a perfectly respectable production. Gary Beach is very funny and at times touching as ZaZa/Albin. Gavin Creel, who I generally like, looks ridiculous in that hairpiece with a ponytail. I don't know why they went with that particular design element. He (Creel) also is one of the weaker performers in the show. I think much of that is because the character is so silly. The choreography by Jerry Mitchell is very athletic, almost gymnastic at points and all the Cagelles are played by men this time. In the original for those who don't know, there were a few women, I forget how many, and when they removed the wigs you were able to tell who was who. A couple of the dance sequences go on too long, IMHO. The show was at 7pm (Tuesdays at 7 on Broadway) and I didn't get out of the theatre until almost 9:45. It's easy to get tickets for the show. Even though it's doing very well (at least according to grosses) it's on TKTS all the time and also on TDF E-Tix (very cheap) so if you're in NY and want to see the show you'll have no problem. Not a strong recommendation but if you want to see it, you'll probably enjoy it. If you don't see it, you're not missing anything. They are selling the Original Cast Rercording from 1983 at the theatre! I wonder if a new recording will be made?
Oh, well, now I'm rambling. I have to get back to work. Maybe later for questions.
-
Hi folks!
Marc Chapeaux is Pogue. His name was apparently misheard as this at one of the booths during the Courts show this past weekend.
I went into La Cage with zero expectations, and perhaps it helped that I did not pay for a ticket, but I enjoyed it a lot. Mainly, I was surprised at how enjoyable the music was and, indeed Daniel Davis carries the show. You are so right about Creel, though I believe he is the main reason why his character comes across poorly. I found his singing as reedy and weak as his character. The ponytail, from what I've heard, was actually a demand of his. Whether it is his character or his performance though, he is definitely the weakest thing about the show.
-
Much in the same way I didn't like the son (Creel) in La Cage, the little kid who plays the son in SUDDENLY is pretty hateful, and I rooted for Sinatra to off him a couple of times.
-
JRand54, the Allison pics are from ZOMBIES OF MORA TAU...both are 8x10 stills of shots that are also used in the lobby card set. I won one, and the seller gave me a second one just for the heck of it...and it is a seller who I have bid against on many an occasion! I think you know him...he is in Europe. Richard is his name.
...and did you buy the whole set of Dark Shadows? Or just one DVD?
-
I recall enjoying SUDDENLY. I like Nancy Gates, and even sent her a letter the other week inquiring about doing an interview...alas, she has not responded.
I did get her autograph on a photo some years back, however!
-
Boy, you'll get no argument from me on HELLO, DOLLY! It's entertaining to watch but so badly miscast in the Dolly and Cornelius and Irene roles that one's teeth ache in frustration.
A CHORUS LINE would be my choice for a remake. I really rather like parts of MAN OF LA MANCHA. I understand the objections of others, but I can watch it and not feel the same kind of frustration that I feel while watching DOLLY or A CHORUS LINE.
-
ANd, of course, MAME also needs a re-do.
-
I watched the last half hour of THE HEIRESS on TCM last night. Oh, what a brilliant movie! Come on, Paramount! Give us this on DVD! (Or does Universal own the rights to it?)
-
While watching THE MATCHMAKER last week, I wondered if Shirley Booth was ever approached about being one of the replacement Dollys when HELLO, DOLLY was running. I mean, she could sing and had done musicals before (and would do one later as well), and she had certainly played Dolly before with great expertise. So, I wonder if anyone ever went and asked her if she'd be interested.
Maybe she was tired after doing HAZEL for five years and didn't want to do the rigors of eight shows a week.
-
Well, I see from the DVD release list for next week that we're getting some fabulous MGM and RKO classics:
STAGE DOOR
BRINGING UP BABY
THE PHILADELPHIA STORY (2 disc set)
LIBELED LADY
DINNER AT EIGHT
TO BE OR NOT TO BE (I'm assuming the Jack Benny version)
How wonderful that these gems are finally coming to DVD.
-
I will probably pass on THE PHILADELPHIA STORY as I have the original issue and don't think the special features sound all that terrific. I'll look to see if there's any change in the transfer they're using.
For me, the prize of the litter is BRINGING UP BABY, one of the great screwball comedies of all time.

This is similar to a question I submitted to Ken Mandelbaum not so long ago. I think it started when there was a bit about Lainie Kazan doing something or other, and I realized that she was one of few people I could think of who played the same role in a musical and non-musical property. (Eve Arden is another, though she played neither AUNTIE MAME or MAME on Broadway, she did play them both elsewhere; similarly, Roz Russell played the screen version of MY SISTER EILEEN and its musical version as well.) I believe I asked him about both Booth and Ruth Gordon regarding DOLLY (though one hardly thinks of Ruth Gordon as being musical), Irene Dunne and KING AND I, and I think someone else, but now I can't remember. And so far, he has deigned not to respond.

We've got a gorgeous day here today: sunny and highs in the low 60s. But tomorrow, winter returns with freezing temps in the morning and rain all day.
We're at that time of the winter where every day is different with relatively warm days and cold days alternating almost daily. But it's a sure sign that spring is coming.

Re: tonight's American Idol elimination
It will be interesting to see how they do it. Perhaps they will have the bottom 4 girls and the bottom 4 guys? I would actually love it if they told us who the top vote getters are, but i'm doubting they will do that.
Here is my guesses for bottom 4:
girls: celena, janay, sarah, melinda
guys: jared, travis, david, joseph
-
AI: The girls -- blech. Any TWO of them could go...and after ALL the performances of last night, it would make no difference to me.
The judges were way too soft, soft, soft on critiques. Simon surely set a record for "civil," non-acrimonious remarks. And a few would have been deserved.
The one performer I liked the least is the one they raved most about.
Again.
-
Good Morning!
WOW! We/You passed 300 posts last night!
I'm taking a break from my "stuff" here at the apartment. Stuff which I must get back to attending to in short order. *It's amazing all the stuff that can "build up" after being away from home for basically six months! Ugh... Ah, well...
Like DR Matt H's environs, it's supposed to be a nice almost Spring-like day here today. However, tomorrow, we're expecting some snow - 2-5 inches. Ah, well...
Well, back to the boxes, envelopes, paper shredder, dual computers, etc....
Laters...
-
...she was one of few people I could think of who played the same role in a musical and non-musical property.
Anthony Quinn as Zorba.
-
OH! But before I go...
Question for Ask BK/Ask DR day:
With the recent deaths of Johnny Carson, Ossie Davis, John Raitt, etc...
Which celebrity death(s) do you first remember? were affected personally by?
And if you want to take it even further - Didn't understand what all the fuss was about? (if there was a big fuss made at the time)
-
MBarnum-
Just enjoyed reading your William Reynolds interview. Well done! Now I have to find and see CULT OF THE COBRA.
-
Well, before I go (again)...
My brother, Jay, who lives in San Diego, just sent me this link:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=winterstorm
(http://www.signonsandiego.com/gallery/view_album.php?set_albumName=winterstorm)
It's photo coverage of the effects of the rain and storms in the San Diego area. Some of the pics are a bit disheartening, but the one on the golf course actually made me giggle.
Let's hope the rain does stop tonight as forecast.
-
PAGE THREE DANCE!!!!
Ländler!

Question for Ask BK/Ask DR day:
With the recent deaths of Johnny Carson, Ossie Davis, John Raitt, etc...
Which celebrity death(s) do you first remember? were affected personally by?
I knew what death was, although I didn't quite understand it.
The first celebrity "deaths" I was aware of (i.e., I knew who the people were):
George Reeves -- "Superman" (I found it unbelievable!)
Stan Laurel -- I knew "Laurel and Hardy"
Carl "Alfalfa" Schweitzer -- I LOVED "Our Gang", but had to keep reminding myself that he was a kid when my parents were, themselves, children, and that "Our Gang" was "before my time."
-
Hmm...
Updated weather reports coming in now...
"Winter Storm Watch: High Uncertainty"
WHAT?!?!?!
-
ANd, of course, MAME also needs a re-do.
Isn't Cher doing the made-for-TV remake? Or is that still happening...with or without Cher??

from BBC News:
French actress Simone Simon dies
Simon starred opposite US actor James Stewart in Seventh Heaven
Simone Simon, the French actress who starred in 1942 horror film The Cat People, has died in Paris aged 93.
Born in Marseille, Simon began her career as a model before coming to the attention of Hollywood studio head Darryl Zanuck.
She was given a contract that saw her act in 11 US movies, including 1937's Seventh Heaven opposite James Stewart.
After the acclaimed Cat People she returned to France to star in famed director Jean Renoir's La Bete Humaine.
International star
Her triangular, almost feline face helped Simon make an impression early in her career but her Hollywood progress was hampered by appearances in unremarkable films.
Disenchanted with Hollywood in general and film studio 20th Century Fox in particular, she returned to France to be re-established as an international star in La Bete Humaine in 1938.
World War Two brought Simon back to the US in the 1940s, where she starred in a series of horror films including All That Money Can Buy, Cat People and its sequel The Curse of the Cat People.
Simon made a handful of films in France in the 1950s before retiring in 1956.

DR Ron, which girl did you like the least (Carrie or Nadia)?
Those are actually my 2 of my favorites. And I believe they are the two most popular. So unfortunately for you, I think they will both be around for a very long while.
-
I'm up, I'm up. The sun has made an appearance here in Southern California. We can only hope it's here to stay for awhile, and on a selfish note (C#) I hope that means the Pool Man will be here today, so he can make everything sparklingly sparkling. Then I can take a long-need Jacuzzi this evening.
-
Simone Simon is one of the few actresses who had worse press in the late 30s fanmags than FF. She's in a lot of the same magazines that I have because of FF articles, and the coverage of Simone is pretty much universally negative. At least FF had regular positive coverage to go along with the "tempermental" complaints, but Simone evidently just had the "tempermental" complaints. I wonder if there was a little chauvinism (in its original sense) involved. :)
-
People certainly are being LOQUCIOUS this fine morning. Let's have some more questions.
Celebrity deaths that got to me: Of course, George Reeves (written about extensively in Kritzerland). Judy Holliday.
Celebrity deaths that didn't get to me: Sam Kinison, Kurt Cobain.
-
Anthony Quinn as Zorba.
Of course! How come I didn't think of that!?!?
-
BK- Who do you believe is the most overrated director in cinema history?
The most underrated?
-
Hmmmmmmm...have to go along with Cobain - I didn't get it. I knew the music, but he was being compared to John Lennon and all the kids were carrying on and lighting candles and there were dirges and specials on MTV....whew. He and his band sounded like a LOT of other bands to me. Still do.
JMK - wonder of some of the negative press Simone got was because she was Zanuck's girlfriend and not particularly fluent in English - but they couldn't write about the REAL reason....
-
DR GEORGE last December GSN had a "play along live" night and if you got in the first 300 for a show you got a $10 gift certificate to Itunes. I also won a T-shirt and SPIDERMAN 2 DVD - and of course the only one to arrive so far is the gift certificate. Email me and I will give you the number of the certificate. It's not much, but you might get a tune or two.
-
Great news about the Haines album - although I guess "Zing a Little Zong" is out. I still think if Mr Haines would watch JUST FOR YOU and see Bing and Jane sing it, he might like it.
-
DR MBARNUM the DVD I bought is called DARK SHADOWS: THE SPECIAL EDITION that has interviews and clips and no full episodes (well an episode in Spanish). It is very interesting.
And now to end my frenzy. My question for ASK BK DAY:
Of all the houses and apartments that were shown on television, which is the one you would most like to live in?
-
DR Ron, which girl did you like the least (Carrie or Nadia)?
Those are actually my 2 of my favorites. And I believe they are the two most popular. So unfortunately for you, I think they will both be around for a very long while.
I don't recall the judges raving over Carrie, but the one I liked least was Nadia!
As to who goes and who stays, I really don't care much for any of them. I had hopes for Mykalah, but her schtick last night pretty much put me off her.
-
I have a question for BK and all the DR's here. Do any of you fall asleep at night listening to music? And if so, what are your preferences?
I personally almost always play music while I'm falling asleep. Last night I had a selection of choruses from Mendelssohn's Elijah, but that's mainly because I have to perform the work in April and I want to familiarize myself with it. My most frequent choice is a collection of particularly beautiful choral works which I burned onto a CD, also I have an Enya CD, a CD of random contemporary music, and of course, the Showtunes Channel on TV.
Anyone else?
-
I must run off to a meeting...back later
-
I still haven't heard Zing a Little Zong so it is not out. There are still seven open slots.
I rarely fall asleep to music. I did use to put the timer on on the TV and fall asleep to that, but when I started my journey writing novels, I found that the time just prior to sleep is very fertile for my brain, and I usually end up getting some of my best ideas then (which I scribble down on a pad on the nightstand next to the bed.
-
Isn't Cher doing the made-for-TV remake? Or is that still happening...with or without Cher??
According to Herman's last interview about it, it's NOT hapopening, with or without Cher until a Broadway revival is mounted. I could be remembering badly, but I think he was not a fan of Cher doing it.
-
The one LP I could fall asleep to within a couple of minutes was Danny Kaye sings HANS CHRISTAN ANDERSEN.
Don't get me wrong. I LOVED the recording (and Jane Wyman dueting with him on a song or two), but there was something soothing and comforting about his vocals that would lull me to sleep.
-
Continuing on my MGM/UA DVD rampage to get everything watched by the end of March to get my hard-earned moolah back. Watched The Dunwich Horror, which I can only conclude refers to Dean Stockwell's somnabulistic (Sp?) performance. :) We watched Mr. Saturday Night last night, and I quite enjoyed it. Not really sure why it got such middling reviews, as I found it very touching and LOL funny at times. Crystal's makeup was pretty bad, IMHO.
Decided to take a chance and pre-ordered the MGM/UA re-release of Come and Get It. Fingers crossed, but that may not be enough. :)
-
Most overrated and uderrated directors. It's the "in history" that makes the question difficult. However, and I mean this with no disrespect, since I like him very much, I think Ron Howard has had one of the most overrated careers. I liked Splash, and I liked Night Shift, but not much beyond those. And his most critically lauded films put me to sleep. Kevin Costner, Redford - most of the actor-types. Mel Gibson. Their film just don't do it for me, and yet they win awards and kudos.
Underrated, there are so many: Anthony Mann, certainly. Budd Boetticher. Delmer Daves. Frank Tashlin.
-
ZING :)
Bing and Jane's duet is available on one CD that is from England, so it's a bit pricy for me. :(
-
I loved all of Delmer Daves' lush budget movies from A SUMMER PLACE on....and some of his earlier work as well....but ROME ADVENTURE and PARRISH and YOUNGBLOOD HAWKE are all favorites of mine.....to which I will add SUSAN SLADE.
-
Oh I am counting my pennies. Oh....STRANGERS WHEN WE MEET. I first saw this movie late on a Saturday night on good old Channel 6 - in color! And Kim Novak was so beautiful and Ernie Kovacs - and the house they were building - all of these elements seemed so sophisticated and perfect to me. I can hardly wait to see it again. And Walter Matthau is SO oily!
-
Oh, Simone Simone...what a lovely actress, but I did not realize she was in her 90s! Wow!
She made a film called Mademoiselle Fifi that was just wonderful. And of course I loved both of the Cat People films!
-
They finally got some good music going outside. A guy in a kilt is playing bagpipes while another guy in a kilt is playing a Celtic drum. I looked to see if it was my old buddy, the middle-aged hippie who's been out of work for twenty years, but it wasn't.
-
The first celebrity deaths that I recall were Jack Benny, Larry Fine, and Moe Howard...all within a few months of each other....I was only in 3rd grade, but I had started reading the newspaper on a regular basis around that time.
-
Yes, Rodzinksi, you must find THE CULT OF THE COBRA...fun movie and a great cast! And thanks for the nice words about my William Reynolds interview!
-
DR ANN - I like to play Carmina Burana or some Annette if I want to fall asleep to music.
-
I don't generally listen to music before I go to sleep...but awhile back when I was having a hard time falling asleep I would often put on some Paul Weston and his Orchestra or Jackie Gleason and his Orchestra....now, thanks to the marvels of modern medicine, I have very little difficulty falling asleep at night! Thank goodness!LOL!
-
DR Jrand54, I always wanted to live in an apartment building like the cast of FAMILY AFFAIR lived in...however, now I prefer something along the lines of Wilbur and Carol's house on MR. ED....but with different furnishings.
-
I remember liking George Duning's score as well. I am looking forward to some reviews of the DVD by DR's. ;D
-
Ah, I was thinking of Uncle Bill's apartment as well MB! LOL....but I also liked the Allbright's apartment in MY LITTLE MARGIE.
The Post's house seemed kind of small to me. The Clampett house was a bit BIG. I think I would choose the Cleaver's house (the second one).
-
I have a question for BK and all the DR's here. Do any of you fall asleep at night listening to music? And if so, what are your preferences?
I can't fall asleep if there is too much noise...but once I'm asleep, I pretty much stay asleep.
-
According to Herman's last interview about it, it's NOT hapopening, with or without Cher until a Broadway revival is mounted. I could be remembering badly, but I think he was not a fan of Cher doing it.
Well, I very muchly hope it gets done, but I'm glad that JH is not a fan of Cher doing it. I don't know anyone who was. ::)
-
Budd Boetticher is someone whose reputation has definitely been on the rise. William Reynolds talks about him in MBarnum's interview, in fact.
I still need to see THE TALL T, about which I have heard great things.
-
I attribute my being a music nut to my falling asleep listening to AM radio a lot as a kid. I would often have dreams in which the songs of the 70s were the soundtrack.
-
My two favorite Boettichers are Ride Lonesome and Seven Men from Now.
-
Or the second house in BACHELOR FATHER.
-
Boetticher's westerns with Randolph Scott are some of the best out there.
There is no more connection between Marc Chapeaux to Charles Pogue than there is Guy Haines to Mr. Kimmel...In fact, unlike Mr. Kimmel who has met Guy Haines, I have never met Marc Chapeaux. I only know him by reputation.
But the rumour now I hear is that among Monsieur Chapeaux many talents is that he is a famed French chantoozy and will be doing a duet with Mr. Haines on his new album of Flat Foot Floogie...or maybe Alley Cat.
-
DR GEORGE I just emailed you the Itunes Certificate Code. Hope you can use it.

Fellini is a director whose films do absolutely nothing for me....but I am always impressed with directors like Maury Dexter or Fred F. Sears who could usually put out something entertaining without any kind of a budget at all.
-
BK, I trying to remember if I've seen SEVEN MEN FROM NOW. Gail Russell and Lee Marvin are vaguely familiar but I don't remember much about it.
I too love RIDE LONESOME (with the blonde with the bombadier boobs) and I like COMANCHE STATION and THE TALL T too (though I still have no idea why it's called the TALL T). But all of them are good...and they all have great charismatic villains.
-
DR GEORGE check ur email.

I don't recall the judges raving over Carrie, but the one I liked least was Nadia!
The judges loved Carrie, especially Simon. He said that she has a good chance to win it all!
As to who goes and who stays, I really don't care much for any of them. I had hopes for Mykalah, but her schtick last night pretty much put me off her.
I think Simon was right on about her. Half the people will find her endearing. But half will think she is obnoxious. I cannot decide which group I fit in. Sometimes I think she is charming. But last night I find her quite annoying. However at this stage it doesn't matter how many people dislike her. Because she still has lots of fans. So as long as America isn't voting people out, she should be safe for quite a while.
Btw, I loved Nadia, she was definitely my fav last night.

They finally got some good music going outside. A guy in a kilt is playing bagpipes while another guy in a kilt is playing a Celtic drum. I looked to see if it was my old buddy, the middle-aged hippie who's been out of work for twenty years, but it wasn't.
Is it windy out?
;D ::) ;D :o ;D ::) ;D :o ;D
-
Seven Men from Now has been virtually impossible to see for over twenty years because it's owned by Batjac, the John Wayne estate. I believe they've finally made a deal for it to come out on DVD, along with Islands in the Sky and The High and the Mighty.
-
The pool man has been here, so, weather-permitting, I shall be in the Jacuzzi this very evening. It's overcast out, but not gray. And there are patches of blue everywhere, and even some sun peeking through. How lovely.

Speaking of chopped liver...
(and we were, just not in the last five minutes or so)
Someone had better explain why chopped liver has such a bad rep. For example, here's a perfectly good recipe for chicken liver mousse (http://www.foodtv.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,1977,FOOD_9936_20355,00.html). Go ahead, read it over, we can wait.
Now, given how tasty that recipe sounds, will someone explain why we have a phrase like "What am I, chopped liver," to suggest things of secondary (or lower) quality?

Rumour now has it that the mulit-faceted Marc Chapeaux will be dueting (or is it pirouetting?) with Mr. Guy Haines on that great Irving Berlin classic, "You Keep Coming Back Like a Thong."
-
Marc Chapeaux 's half-brother Ming will be dueting with Mr. Haines on that equally famous Berlin classic, "You Keep Coming Back Like a Tong."

This afternoon, while we had a break from the storms, I went for a walk. I crept through some bushes, and this is what I saw:
-
ON A CLEAR DAY looks and sounds quite wonderful. The transfer may be just a tad dark, but the Technicolor is so vivid that I didn't care. That kaleidiscopic credit sequence is sense-numbing with the vivid Technicolor. Astonishing.
"Love with All the Trimmings" remains probably the sexiest musical number ever filmed, and the film has a Dolby Digital 5.1 remastered soundtrack that gives nice body to the music. I even heard some bass coming out of the subwoofer, pretty good for a film that's 35 years old.
If only Robert Goulet had been chosen to played Marc.
-
Hey everyone...the new Broadway Radio Show is up and running....sorry for the lateness, but I ended up being out of town for the holiday weekend
Enjoy!
-
I guess the sheep is still alive.
I Guess the Sheep is Still Alive - that's the title of my next novel.
Mr. Haines is quite looking forward to working with Marc Chapeaux. In fact, the way he put it to me is that he'd work with Chapeaux at the drop of a hat.
-
I was so unimpressed with the women that I really don't care which of them are eliminated tonight. I was more impressed overall by the men (though there were some weak apples in that barrel, too).
Put me on the side of those who found Mikalah tiresome and irritating. I would LOVE to see her get the hook tonight. I really didn't think she showed much singing talent (though she exuded sass to burn).
-
ALIAS fans are once again reminded that the show will start one minute after the hour due to the spill-over from LOST, and it will end two minutes into the next hour due to ABC adding extra commercials and program promos.

Kritzer books purchased for me mere moments ago by the Gal.

As for Mikalah, I got the feeling she was trying to channel Baby Snooks, but some Molly Picon kvetch got in the way.

DR's. thanks for the B-day wishes on Monday. I returned to the Bay Area on Monday without any problem. The problem was getting back into the routine first thing on Tuesday morning - hence my being E&T yesterday. I'm catching up. Thanks again to the HHW family!
-
Well, I'm a forgetful horse's ass! I totally forgot DRPogue's anecdote about Mark (Marc) Chapeaux, and I wish him a successful recording career with the excellent Mr Haines.
I have a couple of suggestions for his and Mr Haines' consideration:
Put On Your Old Gray Bonnet
Top Hat, White Tie and Tails (Berlin)
Easter Parade (Berlin)
A Bowler Hat (Sondheim)
The Hat (Crosswell-Pockriss)
Johnny Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet
Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home

Or even John Cullum....
I received my DVD of this title today and cannot wait until I can view it.
This movie should have been thought out just a little more carefully.
In essence, it's "My Fair Lady" with a twist...Daisy is a modern-day "flower girl" and her past self, the fabulous Melinda, is the transformed Eliza (but also from humble roots).
Professor Chabot (aka Bruckner in Broadway version) is a modern-day Henry Higgins (with spouse carefully out of sight) being "hired" to help Daisy with a problem and then finding himself immersed into his craft with a psychological phenomenon of past-life regression that comes on at the drop of a hint.
Streisand's penchant for the "mod look" , I'm guessing, led to the costume decisions that were made for Daisy...and those costumes ALONE date the film.
It's still glorious in some of its execution, and that's more than enough to recommend it.
-
Also received in mail today:
The 45 r.p.m. by Aretha Franklin of "Spanish Harlem" backed with "Lean on Me", which I think is one of her BEST recordings, but which has never been on an LP or CD that I've found.
In fact, I only heard the song a few times as it was on this pressing on a jukebox in Baltimore MD back in 1970/71. When I started looking for a copy of my own, I found "Spanish Harlem" backed with something different.
So...I'm thrilled...and even MORE anxious to get this work day over with so I can get home and fire up the turntable.
-
SpillOVahz.....
As for Mikalah, I got the feeling she was trying to channel Baby Snooks, but some Molly Picon kvetch got in the way.
I think someone has told her she bares a very slight resemblance to Barbra Streisand, and I think she's trying to play that card for all it is worth. But I found her vocals THE most lacking of all the ladies last night. Only her chutzpah got her through the process, and the judges let her off VERY lightly, perhaps because she's so very young.
But as DR Ron said, they were pretty easy on all the girls last night, much more so than they were with the men. Of course, I think they, like I was, had higher expectations for the guys than they delivered.
-
Next on the DVD lineup (not to be seen until tomorrow with this full night of TV ahead) is TWENTIETH CENTURY.
-
Rodzinski, if you bring them to the Writer's Block event, I will be happy to sign them for you, and if you remind me on the 16th of March, I'll bring you a Kritzer CD.
I got SO many packages today filled with lots and lots of goodies. Got many DVDs, including Behold the Pale Horse, My Sister Eileen, It Happened to Jane, On a Clear Day, The Widow of St. Pierre (unlike its US counterpart, proper ratio), the stage version of The Young Girls of Rochefort, an import multi disc complete Betty Boop collection, and Strangers When We Meet. What to watch is the big question. My pal David also sent me the two latest collector releases of two classic Herb Alpert albums, The Lonely Bull and South of the Border.
-
I might end up with that PHILADELPHIA STORY 2 disc DVD set after all. Amazon's boxed set price of all those comedies puts each film costing about $8.60, a wonderful bargain. I can always give my DVD to my friend Gregg for his birthday. He loves old movies but never buys them for himself.

A question for ASK BK DAY!
BK, were there any songs for the new Guy Haines CD that had been suggested by your faithful HHWers, which you and/or Guy Haines hadn't thought of (or even heard of), but decided to actually record?

Tonight is the finale of PROJECT RUNWAY in which we find out which of the three designers wins the $100,000 to start his/her own line.

You don't have to specify which songs may have been chosen (until you're ready), just if any had actually been chosen from the HHW suggestions.
-
Which television home would you like to have lived in if it was real?

I'd have to go back and look at that day's posts - does anyone remember which day it was that we were taking suggestions?

The topic was REDISCOVERING MY BUDDAH (http://www.haineshisway.com/community/index.php?board=4;action=display;threadid=544). Your announcement was Post #19 on the first page.
-
I'd say that there are a few songs listed that are still under consideration, along with one that's probably a definite.
-
My two favorite Boettichers are Ride Lonesome and Seven Men from Now.
The first stars the lovely Karen Steele of BAILOUT AT 20,000 FEET fame and the other co-stars the beautiful Pamela Duncan of ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS fame.
I can always find a lowly B-movie connection to any classic! LOL!

My Question for Ask BK Day
I keep hearing about songs that you are considering for the Guy Haines CD. I know that you and Grant Geissman have gotten together at least twice, to run through music. My Question is:
Doesn't Mr. Haines have any say in what songs he will sing on his own CD??? Granted, with your talent and your batting average, he will certainly be in good hands, but I would think that he would want some say in this matter. Or do Mr. Haines tastes in music run to heavy metal and (God help us) rap?
-
My Question for Ask BK Day

I suspect Guy Haines places himself in BK's hands far more than one might expect.
:D

Celebrity deaths that bothered me the most were (as I have mentioned at this site before) George Reeves and Judy Garland. Interestingly enough, this very morning I heard on the radio that Ben Affleck and Diane Lane are going to star in a new film with the working title of TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND THE AMERICAN WAY. The film involves two people investigating the possible murder of George Reeves.
The death that I never understood the uproar about (and I know I will probably offend a lot people by saying this) was Elvis Presley. Now, don't misunderstand me, I liked Elvis. I saw almost all of his films and I enjoyed some of his music; but I never considered him The King. I thought it was very sad that he died at such a young age, but that was about it.
-
Bruce, I didn't know "Strangers When We Meet" was out on DVD. The movie is very well done. Kim Novak is incredibly beautiful as usual.
It was sunny and 71 today, but California's wetness is headed this way. I actually smelled orange blossoms today. I would imagine the whole city will be perfumed by the trees in about a week or so-- it depends on how much sun we get. I always feel wonderfully alive during the weeks you can smell citrus blossoms everywhere.
Bruce-- do you have a large sheet music collection? I would imagine some of our extremely talented Dear Readers have quite a bit of sheet music.

In answer to Michael Shayne's question, I always wanted to live in Bentley Greg's house.

Good Evening!
Just taking a break from all my "stuff". Things are going well, if a bit slower than I'd like, but isn't that always the case?
Weather-wise, there is still some "High Uncertainty" in regards to the "Winter Storm Watch". Most everyone agrees that it will start off as snow just after midnight, but then turn to rain come morning. No accumulation. Ah, well...
Well, I better get back to work - just another hour or so to go. I hope.
Laters...
-
As I posted the other day, Guy just shows up and sings what we tell him to sing. He doesn't rehearse, he just leaves himself in our hands.
I was supposed to go to a screening of The Wild Bunch tonight. They're unveiling our very own Nick Redman's new documentary, A Simple Adventure Story, and screening the film. It's going to ba a LONG evening, close to four hours. Since I've seen both film and documentary, and since they're expecting a large crowd anyway, I cancelled. I'm working on the end of a chapter and section and it's proving a bit difficult and I want to work through it. So, there you are.
-
DR Sandra, I just caught up with yesterday's posts, and while Sugar and I both appreciate the idea of a puppy, she and I felt that this is not the time for a little sister.
So-- what kind of puppy?

Hi folks! I’m sorry about last night. I don’t know what happened. The net seemed very slow to me and it took forever for things to load on any page. The next thing I knew, I couldn’t get anything to load.
I made it to the front page here and saw my name there but I never could get any further. I didn’t know if E-mail would work or not but I tried sending one to DR Jane so she could tell you what happened. At least that worked.
Thank you, DR Jane for your assistance!
Today was another mixed day.
I’ve been worried about my Income Tax Check not showing up in time for the trip. I had gone on online for information on when to expect it and it said that if I didn’t receive it by March 18th (!) to get in touch with them. Since that is my spending money for the trip, I was more then a little concerned.
It came today. I finely felt like the last part of the puzzle fell into place and all systems are go!
Then, when I came home from work, I found that my Mother had fallen. She tripped over Brandi. She’s ok but twisted her ankle. Now I am worried about leaving her. I have a friend that will look in on her but……..
She says I'm being silly.
Anyway, it’s turning out to be one of those weeks with highs and lows.
-
:o That statement can be taken a variety (and hollywood reporter) of ways! ;)
That's why I used extra special care with my wording!

Rodinsky next time I’m at Starbucks I will try the CHANTICO DRINKING CHOCOLATE. LOL. It does sound good.
SWW what brand of food do you use? The diet change should have helped, but then I have never had a Dalmatian.
Ann Black Bottom cupcakes sound very good. I think I had something similar. I bet the neighbor would enjoy receiving a batch from you. :)

Anyone else?
I did until I got married. It had the opposite effect on Keith and he couldn't fall asleep. Now I read under the covers with a flashlight.

Very weird way they did the eliminations. Will discuss it more tomorrow.

Rodzinski, if you bring them to the Writer's Block event, I will be happy to sign them for you, and if you remind me on the 16th of March, I'll bring you a Kritzer CD.
Sounds good. I'll actually be out west for work from the 4th to the 13th of March, some of that in LA, but I'm not sure if I'll have the books yet. Also not sure how close you are to the Staples Center, where I'll be toiling, but perhaps you can guide me to a Shakey's where I shall have my date with the Mojo Potatoes of destiny.
-
I did until I got married. It had the opposite effect on Keith and he couldn't fall asleep. Now I read under the covers with a flashlight.
This is a very sweet and funny image! :)

the Mojo Potatoes of destiny
Something tells me this could well be the title of BK's next book.
-
Who was Bentley Greg?
The only Bentley I can think of is the British guy who lived near the Jeffersons. Living in NYC, I wouldn't mind the Jeffersons deluxe apartment on the East Side. But Uncle Bill's place from Family Affair is hard to beat. If I lived out in the burbs, I think I would like the Bradys house from the Brady Bunch. Very roomy with that cool staircase and an astroturf lawn that never needs mowing.
JRand, you should at least appreciate that ONE DAY AT A TIME was one of the only shows to take place in Indiana. But that apartment they had was pretty dreadful.
-
Actually, if I had my druthers, the place the Drummonds lived in on DIFF'RENT STROKES was pretty sweet.
-
This is a very sweet and funny image! :)
Thank you. It is really funny when Bogie decides to snuggle up against me right in front of my book. What I go through to read. ;D
-
An article in my local paper says L.A. is having its 5th wettest year. The record is 38.18 inches, set in 1883-1884. Does anyone know what and when the other four year years were?
-
Bentley Gregg was "Bachelor Father" as played by the dashing John Fosythe
-
We were up to 34 inches yesterday. I don't believe there are four worse years.
Rodzinski, the only Shakey's I know for sure is here near me. We could meet there if you can get up to the Valley.
-
Which television home would you like to have lived in if it was real?
The Flintstones.
-
hehehe....yes that was back in the days when even the title Bachelor Father was a "wink wink" joke.
-
DR RODZINSKI that was one of my main problems with ONE DAY AT A TIME - it must have been an alternate universe Indianapolis.
Everytime Bonnie Franklin said something like Washinton Street or Block's Dept Store - I wanted to slap her again.
-
SWW what brand of food do you use? The diet change should have helped, but then I have never had a Dalmatian.
DR Jane, Dalmations have a natural tendency to fart. It's something we take in stride. The elder grandlad thought it hilarious when he and Fletcher were riding in the car with us shortly after Fletcher joined us. We just cracked the windows open and laughed as well. ::)
-
I thought Alexis' studio, on the Carrington Manse grounds, was quite intimate yet posh. It's too bad Krystal had such radical ideas about redecorating.
-
I also liked Mary Richards' first apartment (on Weatherly).
-
I think I'm about to ascend!
-
Maybe?
-
Woo hoo!! Cherry Cokes all around!
-
My, what a LOQUACIOUS bunch we are this evening.
-
I had no quibbles about the two girls eliminated tonight from AMERICAN IDOL. Neither's voice was particularly strong nor was either very charismatic.
I think both guys who were let go had more to offer, and I'm sorry to see them go. There were less talented people who got to move on at least another week. Oh, well, that's the nature of the beast.
I found the eliminations (particularly the last guy) really cruel and sickening. I can imagine how unsettling it must have been for the contestants.
-
How about that ALIAS! One of the best shows of the season by far!
And LOST, well, it's always superb.
-
I liked the room George Burns could go into and watch a TV that could see what everyone else was doing. How handy would that be!
-
I thought George and Jane Jetson's house was nifty too.
-
My mom says "Yay" for Kerry.
-
Since I can't possibly stay up to see who got dumped on AI, could someone IM me the names of the two guys eliminated. You can skip the women, I thought they should all be eliminated.
-
I also liked Mary Richards' first apartment (on Weatherly).
Great upstairs neighbor, but the landlady was a bother.
-
All right, here's the latest scuttlebutt: Monsieur Chapeaux and Mr. Haines will be doing a duet of Dark Town Strutters Ball.
-
I'll be down to get you in a taxi, honey.

I'm watching Strangers When We Meet - love these old potboilers.
-
JRand54, I watched THE STRANGER tonight. While it has many interesting, outre, and frenzied moments. It seems to be a movie of isolated scenes and off-kilter performances which never quite hang together as a whole.
It seems especially stinted in logical motivation and connective tissue. A tad disjointed. We never see any reason why Loretta Young would be in love with Orson Welles who's telegraphing his villainy from the get-go. And the doctor character who appears without introduction and has some interesting scenes seems like he should be a jilted love interest who's part got cut to the bone.
The most bizarrely wonderful performance is Billy House as Potter the checker-playing (and cheating) proprietor of the cafe/grocery.
While I'm glad I saw it, I was ultimately disappointed. It did not live up to the memory of the last half hour I had seen previously and the expectation I had for the first half.

LOQUACIOUS, baby, LOQUACIOUS.

I'm very anxious to dig into the Betty Boop collection.
-
What am I, doing a monolog all of a sudden?
-
And one for Mahler.
-
Holy moley on rye - page eight! I feel I was just being very LOQUCIOUS.
-
Ah...sorry you didn't like it so much DRPOGUE. The combination of actors and storyline has always intrigued me.
There are NAZIS living among us!
-
Are you going to talk about STRANGERS in tomorrow's notes?
-
I didn't dislike it and it was at time intriguing...I just felt it could have been more so. Personally, once Robinson's got it all figured out except for the proof, I don't know why the Feds aren't jumping on this guy and sweating it out of him. Needed more suspense and more mystery.
-
Well there was the suspense about Loretta getting those drapes hung.
-
No, I won't finish Strangers until tomorrow night. A couple of others in the notes, which will be up in a mere three count them three minutes.
