Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of my favorite Cohen, and now it is time for you to post until the Cohen cows come home.

Not even tech for any shows?

Next year, pug will direct Equivocation at Olympia Little Theatre, where we just did Bunbury, and she asked me to run sound.  I, of course, said yes.  Otherwise, nothing coming up anytime soon.

I’m not familiar with that show, but then I don’t know half the shows that OLT does.

I want to leave her no later than 7:45.  I need two buses, the M104 and the M11 to get me to 37th Street and 9th Avenue.  I'll feed the cats shortly, and when they are finished, I'll wash their bowls and leave them plenty of dry food and treats to last them till I return this evening, when I'll give them some more Fancy Feast.

You might say last night’s tech run-through was a grand train wreck. I mean, if you were the kind of person who uses such language. Happily, not for yrs truly, but it was a bear to get through. The orchestra isn’t required to be there tonight but I know that if I’m there to cover the piano part it will help the MD and the cast immensely, and I’ll probably go. It will be of help to my own lovely self, too, in solidifying some tricky cues.

I'm up, I'm up.  I got a call at nine from my gal - the problem is on the printer's end and is affecting all new books that are submitted.  Why it would take this long to fix it is anyone's guess, but the publisher is on them every day because about 100 books they're trying to make live are affected by this stupidity.  Hoping for end of day and they'll keep me posted, but at least I know that the highest echelons are dealing with this.

TOD

I developed a passion for paperbacks, primarily movie and other tie-ins, around the time we moved from Ohio to Florida when I was around age ten. What started it might have been my dad bringing home "More Stories From the Twilight Zone" which he'd seen at a supermarket. It blew me away. I'd had no idea any such wonderful thing existed, let alone for my single favorite show. We had all loved the first season and the show was well into season two at the time. I loved that thing to death, reading it over and over, obsessing over prose description of scenes and spoken lines.

I later caught up with the first volume by having a local paperback dealer order me a copy. By then, we'd moved to within walking distance of our little downtown where there was a large newsstand that dealt not only in all manner of periodicals, including comics, but was a sizable paperback store in its own right. It became a regular hangout for me as I discovered one wonderful horror movie or other genre tie-in after another, and many were acquired over the next few years. Another source for such treasures was drugstore and supermarket paperback racks. I still recall a few specific titles and exactly where I found them in my early teens. I've retained a considerable number of those, and while there are some I could probably dump, many are precious, not only for their content but for their striking design.

As a side note, another tip of the hat I must give to Clark's News (they still exist, at least in name) is my love for great newsstands. I don't recall any from my Cleveland years, but upon moving to Hollywood I quickly found the Las Palmas and Cahuenga ones. Later there were others (I'm thinking S. Robertson or La Cienega?) (Van Nuys Blvd.?) and it always felt somehow magical to stop and kill an hour browsing, and of course I never left one empty handed.

TOD 2:

When I worked in Sarasota, I was asked to write a story on one of our local favorites, John D. MacDonald, who wrote the Travis McGee series. I had not read him. So I scoured the local used bookstores and found a good 90% of his books in their original paperback glory. Lurid, violent covers with scantily clad, buxom women and evil under the Florida sun.

That story drew more positive response than anything I had written for that paper. The locals loved him. The mystery writers I interviewed loved him.

I read every one of those books and decided not to bring them with me when I moved to Texas. I wish I still had them.

I learned about the Travis McGee stories in the mid-1980s, and I absolutely devoured them. I just bought the then-current paperbacks, but I think I still have all of those.

I loved the 1960s James Bond paperbacks and even scoured the secondhand places for them when I decided to read straight through them about ten years ago. Loved the read, but these particular books were not in great shape so at the end of it they had to go.

Listening to a master of one of the two upcoming releases that's being prepared.  Not sure I'll have the master for the other one in time for the announcement but I'll still be able to put up some samples, just not the final versions.  The one I'm listening to now is really much better than the previous CD release that goes for lots of dough now and that version was so shoddily mastered and packaged, so this is quite a nice upgrade.

I got home about 30 minutes ago and fed the cats immediately.  The three sessions went very well, so I hope that doesn't jinx tomorrow's two.  It was great to see friends from the show I hadn't seen in two years, and the orchestra sounded fantastic.  People came and went during the day, and when I left with the orchestra, they were about to begin some of the vocal tracks that were not done live today.  Tonight was a session for The Girlfriends, the trio of ladies who sang in several numbers.  Tomorrow, we finish up the orchestra sessions and bring in more singers.  As thjey arrive, they are added to the overdubs for "Wood."

TOD 3:

ChasSmith mentioned movie tie-in paperbacks. I had a few of those. My favorite was Day of the Locust by Nathanael West. I see the movie is now going for $50 for a used Blu and Ray.

I also had one for Rough Cut, which was turned into an odd Burt Reynolds movie. The book featured the first extensive SM scene I think I remember reading.

So many others, such as The Divine Sarah (with Glenda Jackson), Fitzgerald's The last Tycoon, Summer of '42, The Godfather, What's Up Doc?, The Exorcist (hard to hide that one at the Lutheran grade school), and Flowers for Algernon.

The very first Fredric Brown book that I got was Space On My Hands.  A friend of my mom's gave me the paperback after she had finished reading it, and she really liked it.  The cover of that specific edition, of course, had NOTHING to do with ANY of the stories.  Here it is:

I used amazon to send a book to a friend. The site says the book was delivered, but she never got it. Amazon is refunding the money and that was quick.

Starting to watcch Bad Reputation, a documentary about Joan Jett, who played the USAA Christmas party a couple of years ago. She's fearless, but the story is sadder than it needed to be. She was trashed for far too long simply because she was a woman in rock. Her early music with the Runaways was trashed when it came out, and it's hailed now.

Tonight my book group discussed THE GLASS CASTLE.  My book group in Ashland did this one years ago.  It is a good thing I decided to read the book since one member hadn't read it and for the first hour there were only two of there.  A 4th member joined us but had not reread the book.  I like the book and didn't mind reading it again.

You had a good talk with yourself?

LOL it was far more interesting than that. Correction on my post...there were two of us that had read the book.

When I was a kid I didn't purchase any books.  Mine mostly came from the library.  A gift of a book was very special to me.  I mostly received them for Chanukah.

My first real memory of purchasing a book was in 1966 after ushering for "Fahrenheit 451 and watching the scene were Oskar Werner begins reading "Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station shall be held by anybody else, these pages must show.  To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born........"

I was absolutely hooked and had to buy "David Copperfield on the way home to read the rest of the book.  I have no recollection of where I purchased it.

Watched Levi this evening.  First time I've seen it since January of 2018.  It's really quite good.  I'd love to do it again with an all-pro cast because of course some of the student performances are not everything they could be, although I was very proud of all of them, considering most had never appeared in a musical or even sung on stage before.  The show really did look great and moves seamlessly and smoothly.  I would futz with a few little things if I did it again and I think some pro actors would really bring out those few characters in beautiful ways.  The costumes are wonderful, too.  It was an 110 minutes and so two hours with the intermission, perhaps two or three minutes longer in the theater than it is on video.

Listening to music right now.  I think the new helper is ready to fully take over as of tomorrow and that, believe you me, is a good thing.  Thanks to her, I'm also going to save about six hundred bucks a month, which will be great.  She has a 5,000 square foot warehouse that's close to her and that's where we'll relocate - although the office we're in has a sixty-day move policy, just another reason to hate their guts - but that will enable us to move slowly - so the first thing we'll do is remove all the stock that's being stored at the pressing plant - that will save 400.  And then next we'll empty out the storage facility and that will save two hundred.  And I'll pay exactly what I was paying for 250 square feet.  Amazing.  Also, we'll be able to clear out a lot of what's in my garage, which will be fantastic.
