Rozinski mentioned the Brady House yesterday;
Such a beautiful house and only one bathroom! And Mike Brady was an architect???
At that time, believe it or not, "middle America" WAS "one bathroom."
I've always reckoned (I reckon) they didn't want to come off as being above middle class in their representation of these families. But still....six kids, a housekeeper AND Mike and Carol and ONLY ONE BATHROOM?
I do think Alice probably had her own, though.
I think the one bathroom you were always seeing was just the kid's bathroom, which adjoined both their rooms. I think the parents and Alice had their own.
OMG this is what my life has come to? Serious conversations about how many fictional bathrooms were in a fictional of house of a fictional family?
I love it here! ;D
Does no one want to answer dear reader Hisaka's question about "segue"? What language is it - French?
Is anyone else having problems loading that huge photo from WFO at the top of the page? If so, I'll remove it and he can resize it down. I have cable modem and its still loading very slowly.
It just occurred to me that I have never seen Disney's THE GNOME MOBILE....do any DRs have an opinion on this film? Is it worth picking up? I like the cast, but it sort of reminds me of that other Disney little people movie, the name of which escapes me just now (it stars Sean Connery), which I didn't care for all that much.
Oh dear, Judd - now I feel bad.
Vixmom - that sounds like a delightful bear.
Well, I would never be so crass as to say "Yes, that bear would look swell on my piano."
JMK, I believe I wrote about the Alpert rarities album last week. Love it.
Well hang on to your hat, sister woman!
Let's talk about "Mama's Family." In the beginning, "Mama" was living with her sister Frannie (Rue McClanahan) who had not only a bedroom upstairs, but an office.
When she died (choking on a toothpick in a restaurant's ladies room), Thelma's son Vint and his two children moved in. BOTH children had rooms upstairs. The girl had Fran's bedroom and the boy had Fran's office. Vint lived in the basement.
Later, when the boy and girl moved away to be with their mother, grandson Bubba arrives, and he moves upstairs. Vint marries Naomi, and for the rest of the series, Vint and Naomi -- who live in the basement -- both want an upstairs bedroom, but there's no room as long as Bubba is there.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHER ROOM?????? There were three...and suddenly, in the final seasons, one has disappeared.
Well, I would never be so crass as to say "Yes, that bear would look swell on my piano."
I'm of the age, though, when Eloise was the big book/doll tie-in, and I remember very clearly when my big sister took me to Hudson's in downtown Detroit to meet Kay Thompson and get an autographed copy of Eloise.
DR vixmom - Thank you for the delightful description of your Girls' Day in Manhattan. Sounds like fun! Do Jen and the Vixter have favorite American Girls? If I were that age, mine would be Kit, who lives in Cincinnati (near where I live now) during the Depression.
WARNING HHW MEN -YOU MAY WISH TO SKIP THIS POST ENTIRELY!!!!!
Oh, DR Vixmom...I am sure that many of the men on this here board don't mind. After all, we have put you through enough nattering on about Brent Barrett, The WSMA (world's sexiest man alive, in HHW speak), and other such beefcake-y topics such as Bollywood hunk John Abraham, etc.
Does no one want to answer dear reader Hisaka's question about "segue"? What language is it - French?
I changed the get-together to tomorrow morning, as I just didn't feel like breaking up the day with too much running around.
I am more than happy to report that the skies are completely and gloriously blue and the sun is shining for all its worth.
DRvicmom, I only grace B&N at present with my presence on Fridays and Saturdays. Did you go to Central Park and see "The Gates?"
DR Elmore3003...for your God-daughters enjoyment....winging his way to you via USPS express mail...

Does no one want to answer dear reader Hisaka's question about "segue"? What language is it - French?I guess DR WFO, Vixmom and I are the only ones who use dictionaries.
RED GARTERS page Three Dance. ;DI wonder if we'll ever see George Clooney in a similar get-up?
I guess DR WFO, Vixmom and I are the only ones who use dictionaries.
What I've found is that SEQUE is from the Italian for "there follows," ultimately from Latin, sequi. From which we also get the word SEQUEL.
I wonder if we'll ever see George Clooney in a similar get-up?
Not to toot my own horn but I used a dictionary this very morning to answer Hisaka's other question on the meaning of Persnickity. I was perhaps a bit loquacious (see yesterday's Word of the Day) but I did answer her question, albeit in a rather long-winded manner. All right, add Ben to my list! :-*
May I vent?
The March 18 meeting in Cleveland, around which I made all my travel arrangements for the HHW gathering in NYC, has been rescheduled. So, now I'm stuck with a nonrefundable plane ticket from CLE to LGA, when it would be much more convenient for me to have flown from Cincinnati. Oh, well, guess I'll just have to have some good CD's to listen to on my (now) unnecessary drive to and from the Cleveland airport.
End of rant.
Yes, he is, DR RON.
DR MATTH - Jo Ann Greer did indeed sing "A Perfect Love" for Junie in THE OPPOSITE SEX. She also sang for Susan Kohner in IMITATION OF LIFE.....love that jazzy number in the sleazy nightclub - before she goes to LA to star at the Moulin Rouge.
While we're talking about "segue" - which is often found in musical scores, DR Elmore, (or anyone else) could you shed some light on the intitals
V.S.
that are often found on the bottoms of pages with a page turn?
I wonder if we'll ever see George Clooney in a similar get-up?
DRMatthew, I believe it stands for "volte subito," which means one fast page turn!
Like I didn't play with dolls as a kid. Please!
Dang it, Bruce, now you've got me wanting a Snickers bar, persnickety or otherwise.
for you!
Ahh, I finally knew one and Elmore beat me to it! :)
...Unfortunately, the only other topic I know I can help clear up today is... there was indeed a bathroom off of Mike and Carol's bedroom. I would presume there was probably one off Alice's room, but I don't think we ever knew this for sure.
Jed, Do we ever see a bathroom off Mike and Carol's room? Granted, I believe there were parts of the house that existed that we never saw. We do get a rare glimpse into a laundry room a couple of times. I've always thought there could be a bathroom off of that. But is the evidence of a parental bathroom merely anecdotal or is it seen at some point? I have no recall of it. The mind boggles!
In the words of Horace Vandergelder...Now if only I had that Willie Wonka machine and you could reach in and get it!!
Wonderful woman!

Wonkavision!
I can definitely imagine a bathroom exactly in that area you are talking about. It would be a perfect place for a bathroom, but I just don't know if it is ever explicitly there.
Oh... except it's "volti subito," not "volte."
...PERSNICKETY...
You can send studmuffins by mail these days?! Where do I order mine?!
I much prefer to see him in the clothes he now wears.
Or in no clothes at all.
Finally, this movie is much maligned, but I think a lot of AT LONG LAST LOVE is actually pretty good, especially anything that involves Madeleine Kahn.
Dang it, Bruce, now you've got me wanting a Snickers bar, persnickety or otherwise.
Looks like work is coming right long, DR LAURA. Will you have an office in the new building?
Oh, DR Vixmom...I am sure that many of the men on this here board don't mind. After all, we have put you through enough nattering on about Brent Barrett, The WSMA (world's sexiest man alive, in HHW speak), and other such beefcake-y topics such as Bollywood hunk John Abraham, etc. Surely, none of us are offended by the knowledge that a girl might be enchanted by a doll. Or even want to collect them. After bakelite and deco cocktail shakers, what else is there left to collect BUT dolls?
I wonder if we'll ever see George Clooney in a similar get-up?
We never see in the bathroom itself, but we do see them going in and out of it occasionally. From the standard "bedroom shot," with the camera at the foot of the bed, the bathroom door was in the upper right hand corner.
Yes, folks, this is the crap my mind is filled with. :D
of snow!! 9 - 10 inches of snow!!
You can send studmuffins by mail these days?! Where do I order mine?!
ARe you sure he will recognize you with your new head style?
IMy favorite Durbin musical (and I guess most of her films would be considered obscure) is HIS BUTLER'S SISTER.
At that time, believe it or not, "middle America" WAS "one bathroom."
I've always reckoned (I reckon) they didn't want to come off as being above middle class in their representation of these families. But still....six kids, a housekeeper AND Mike and Carol and ONLY ONE BATHROOM?
Vixmom - that sounds like a delightful bear.
It's so pretty outside.
Kerry congratulations and welcome to the clouds!
Vixmom what a fun day you had. Who is in the darling photo?
DR Kerry - Thanks for your concern/thoughts/words.
We'll see what happens. I spent a good chunk of this afternoon going through three boxes of "stuff". One box was almost exclusively filled with xeroxes of scores I already have in "hard form". -And for some unknown reason, I had THREE, single-sided copies of the piano/vocal score for R&H's CINDERELLA. ?!?!?!?!?
But I did come across some sentimental stuff, and stuff I was very glad to see again after so many years.
In any case... The recycling bin will be quite full next week.
The drive home tonight was nearly uneventful, however just before I got to my Mom's, to pick up the Vixter, I hit a slick patch as I was going around a corner and started spinning in a beautiful slow motion 360 unfortunately there was a big garbage truck with a snowplow attached right in my path and I thought I was going to meet my Maker...fortunately the truck saw me and stopped and swerved and I gracefully slid past uninjured --- WHEW!!! And the snow continues!!
Oh, and Vixmom, tell the Vixter when she gets the Kit doll, you two can come to Cincinnati and I'll take you on a tour!
Yikes! I just got off the phone with my mom, who was telling me about my sister in Michigan having almost the identical experience a few days ago. She's OK, but did $5000 damage to her car.
Hi DR's Jane & Vixmom!
Jane - My book group decided to change our meeting for The Kite Runner to March 31, so not only can I attend, but I'm hosting. Want to come?
YES! :D
Kerry congratulations and welcome to the clouds!
Here's an obscure Warner Bros. musical I wonder if anyone here knows about. It is called GOING PLACES from 1938 with Louis Armstrong, Dick Powell, Anita Louise, Ronald Reagan and more. Songs by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer including Jeepers Creepers and Mutiny in the Nursery. Unavailable ever on VHS or DVD.
I only know of it because I have one of those bootleg LPs with the soundtrack to it on one side and LADY BE GOOD on the other side. Really good tunes.
No packages for me today! :(
A final obscure musical to toss out there: BUGSY MALONE.
And with that, I enter the blizzard of sleepyland.
