When you watch STRANGERS WHEN WE MEET you must see if you recognize the neighborhood!

At last today we will get a photograph of the new highlighted BK.

Oscure musicals....hmmmmmmmm....well THE APPLE has been released on DVD....hmmmmmm

I really like a crazy 1968 musical called WILD IN THE STREETS....all the songs are sung by the band in the movie Max Frost and his Troopers, but I like it.

I guess my most obscure - I have only seen it once, but I liked it - was a musical version of IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT called YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM IT with June Allyson and Jack Lemmon.

The songs were by Gene dePaul.

Strangers When We Meet was all shot in West LA, Bel-Air, and Malibu.  Most of the places where it was shot look exactly the same.

I must soon toddle off to the bedroom environment - I'm going to try to get up a bit earlier than I have, so I can get some writing done before doing my little get-together and my highlights.

Glad that the sun came back in Los Angeles.
We had the first gale of spring yesterday and it was enough warm (17°C almost same as LA) to wear half-sleeve T-shirts outside. This weather is exceptional for February in Tokyo and in the whole world has the crazy weather for a few years, especially for this past

Good morning, all!  I know I had some sort of dream about college, finishing a thesis or something for whatever degree, and missing a school bus.  I think there may have been one of my college apartments as well in there, but the whole megillah seems to have covered a few time zones of my existence.

Now that I'm nearly awake, of course, it's all fading quickly, rather like Bottom's dream in Shakespeare, but unlike Bottom, I don't feel remotely transformed by the experience.  It's all just so much fish.

Today's an obscure movie musical day?  My memory tells me that the film of MY SISTER EILEEN lost the WONDERFUL TOWN score because Chodorov and Fields didn't like the score.  I haven't seen the film in over 30 years, but I have a memory that a lot of the songs are in the same places as those of WONDERFUL TOWN.

I always liked the film THE OPPOSITE SEX, although I really have no memory of the score now, and, like DRJRand54, I liked YOU CAN'T RUN AWAY FROM IT.

Dear Friend BK, please tell Vinny hello for me.

DR Kerry, Welcome to the heights.

Mary Richards' first apartment (on Weatherly)

Ah, yes, Mary's very large studio apartment in South Minneapolis. The actual address was 2104 Kenwood Parkway on the corner of  W. 21st St. It even had a balcony. I forget, did we ever see Phyliss & Lar's portion of the house? I know we went upstairs occasionally to Rhoda's hip and groovy pad with beaded curtains et al. Suddenly one season Mary moved to the University of Minnesota area to a large complex, which at that time was called Cedar Square West (1525 South 4th St.) and is now called Riverside Plaza. Back then it was mostly filled mostly with students from the West Bank of the U of M. Now, it's been turned into public housing and has fallen on rather hard times. She only moved there because the owners of the house on Kenwood Parkway got tired of tourists asking to visit with Mary and Rhoda. When the CA crew came back to film new exteriors (it was during the Nixon Watergate brouhaha) they found signs festooning (there's a good word) the house and property which supported the impeachment of said President. The show decided it was easier to let Mary grow up and move into a nice one-bedroom. If only that one-bedroom looked anything like the little boxes that were aparments in Cedar Square West.

Oh, well. Am I being PERSNICKETY by providing all this information? No, I don't think so.

The definition of Persnickety according to one dictionary is particular. Some synonyms are careful, choosy, fastidious, finicky, fussy, nice, and picky.

Another definition says:

Finicky or fussy; demanding excessive attention to petty details or niceties; unduly particular; fastidious; -- of people. [Colloq.]

Yet another:

used colloquially of one who is overly conceited or arrogant; "a snotty little scion of a degenerate family"-Laurent Le Sage; "they're snobs--stuck-up and uppity and persnickety" [syn: bigheaded, snooty, snot-nosed, snotty, stuck-up, too big for one's breeches, uppish]

And, finally, before I put you all to sleep:

characterized by excessive precision and attention to trivial details; "a persnickety job"; "a persnickety school teacher" [syn: pernickety]

And now I'm off to the Jessie Smith Noyes Foundation.

I'll have to think about obscure musicals. I've heard about The Opposite Sex, the musical version of The Women but I've never seen it. I'll have to see if it's available for viewing.

BTW, I would have liked to live in Donna Reed's house. With a big brother like Paul Petersen and Carl Betz for a dad I would have liked it there, I think.

Well, you folks have already named two that I came up with:  The Opposite Sex and that June Allyson/Jack Lemmon picture.  To some degree, I will have to include "You Can't Stop the Music."  (Though a favorite of many Dear Readers, in the "real" world I suspect it would be looked upon as obscure.)

Welcome to the heavens, DR Kerry.

I forgot to respond to the "TV/Movie House" question....two came to mind:  Zachary Scott's in MILDRED PIERCE and Bill Bixby's in THE COURTSHIP OF EDDIE'S FATHER.  Ironically, I have never desired to live in California, but those houses had their charms, as I recall.  Also Mel Harris and Ken Olin's house from thirtysomething.  There was something about that porch and that front door that I really liked.

Two favorite obscure movie musicals:

BLONDIE GOES LATIN...has some great songs as sung by Penny Singleton and Tito Guizar, and Penny cuts a pretty mean rug!! I love most of the early Blondie movies, but this one is my favorite, and really the only one that is musical.

MURDER IN THE BLUE ROOM... a musical, comedy, murder mystery made by Universal in 1944...with songs like BOOGIE WOOGIE BOOGIE MAN how can you not like it!

You Can't Run Away From It is out on CD, coupled (so to speak) with Texas, Lil Darlin'.

Here's an obscure musical:  Marco, with that well-known star of stage and screen, Desi Arnaz Jr. (and Zero Mostel).  One of the most peculiarly peculiar films ever, the first live action (supposedly) film by Rankin Bass.  I had seen a VHS of it years ago and found a DVD on a site and ordered it.  When it came, it wouldn't work in my DVD player, but I put in my PC and finally got it to boot--it was a travelogue about Atlanta, Georgia.  Hmmmm.......

I'll assume DR TCB found out who was eliminated on AI: Melinda, Sarah, Jared and Judd.

I must say this. I hated the way Ryan did the eliminations.  For the women he just blurted poor Melinda's name out (she was stunned).

But the real doozy was for poor Judd.  That was horrible.

For those who didn't watch, there were 6 men sitting on the top row and 5 on the bottom (one had been eliminated from the bottom row already).

Ryan tells the 5 on the bottom row to relax.  Then he makes the 6 others come on stage two by two. He says to the first group "you are safe". Then to the second two he says "you are safe". Then to the last 2 he says "you are safe".  Then he looks over at the other 5 and yells out "judd you're gone".

Without even letting the bottom row know they were in jeopardy.  Judd was stunned.  Everyone assumed it would be one of the two guys left standing on stage (anwar or joseph).

I also didn't like how they did each elimination separately.  Bring out the bottom 4 girls and get rid of 2. Do the same to the guys. To make each group sit through eliminations twice was not nice.

I will also say that Melinda (who was eliminated first) got something right on (which really bugs me).  All the people who got eliminated were those who were not featured on the regular show (people we have not seen until this week). IT's not fair. So many of the contestants were featured regularly during the audition shows. And they developed huge fan bases. It is totally unfair for those who were not seen until now.

The only thing i can think of is that they featured those with more charisma and those who were thought to have a good chance to win.  Since it does seem to me that way.  But it's still not fair. And I strongly suspect the same thing will happen next week (those we did not see on the audition shows will be the ones to leave).

I think Joan Crawford's musical TORCH SONG is a real guilty pleasure. It's terrible in so many ways, and yet I can't help watching it often AND enjoying it.

My favorite Durbin musical (and I guess most of her films would be considered obscure) is HIS BUTLER'S SISTER.

I've mentioned I LOVE MELVIN here before as one of the great "small" musicals, and would IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER qualify since it was such a flop on its first release?

THE OPPOSITE SEX IS a lot of fun and is very well cast. The music is negligible, but adding the hunky Jeff Richards to any movie just has to make it worth watching. I have it on laserdisc, but the color is faded, and the movie is obviously in need of some tender loving care.
Title: Re:SEGUE

You're right, Jennifer, about Melinda's comments. Those who were not given featrued time on the audition shows and last week's eliminations are at a terrible disadvantage in that they have no rooting interests built up.

The judges (Simon in particular) tried to offset her remarks by saying that since some of the singers have only one chance to make a good first impression, they needed to make the most of it, but it ignored Melinda's point that you've got fans who would be willing to give a favorite the benefit of the doubt in the first round until it's clear they aren't going to measure up.

The four eliminated last night did start with a terrific disadvantage in terms of fan support.

I had written comments about all 24 contestants each night, and while I didn't write anything flattering about Melinda or Sarah, I wrote that Jared had a sweet voice and that Judd had excellent performing instincts and was trying to hide his musical theater background with a song that wouldn't require a "show voice."

See last night's forum for my comments about the results show format. There has GOT to be a better way to do this.

Yep, I'm looking forward to seeing MY SISTER EILEEN again after many years. Maybe I'll like the score better this time around. I guess after so many years of hearing WONDERFUL TOWN, the songs in EILEEN sounded like duds to me the first time I saw it.
Title: Re:SEGUE
Post by: Rodzinski on February 24, 2005, 08:12:04 AM
I've never seen the film, but "You Can't Run Away From It" is a great song.

Speaking of Rankin & Bass, THE LAST UNICORN is a surprisingly good animated musical the Gal introduced me to. Jimmy Webb composed songs performed by America. Jeff Bridges and Mia Farrow also have a duet, although the German soundtrack CD kindly replaces Mia's vocals with a decent singer. A very dark and esoteric "kids" film that could not be done as well today even with better animation (and a computer-animated version is on the way). Angela Lansbury, Tammy Grimes and Alan Arkin also do marvelous voice work.

BK:  re Herb Alpert CDs.  There's actually a third out in this first batch, the best of the bunch:  Rarities, Vol. 1, which is all previously unreleased stuff, including Herb's tribute to Julius.

BMG Music Club people:  I just got a very interesting email from them.  They've started a Netflix sort of music thingy (technical term, that), called YourMusic.com.  You pay a $5.99 month subscription and get one CD of your choice (to keep, not to rent) for that (no shipping).  Plus all the other CDs there are $5.99 with no shipping.  I looked and the site seems to be the regular BMG site, so I think it's probably cheaper to do it this way if you have at least one CD a month you want.

Re:  Mia Farrow singing.
I think I may have told this story before, but it's a fave of mine.   When I was the featured artist aboard a cruise ship I launched into the Theme From Rosemary's Baby one day as a sort of ironic musical comment on a child who was misbehaving rather loudly up by the piano.  When the cruise ended, a very elderly lady came up to me and said, "You don't hear that one much anymore."  (I had no idea what she was talking about, as I had played probably 60 songs or so over 3 hours).  Then she added, "You know, I always preferred Claudine Longet's version to Mia Farrow's."  Suddenly, I knew exactly what she was talking about.  :)

Good Morning!

Sorry for being errant and truant the latter part of yesterday, but it really couldn't be helped.

Can you say, "technical problems"?

 :-\

Also, due to some sort of "deal" that my roomie made with our landlord - without consulting me, of course -  it looks like I may be packing up my stuff this weekend.  All of it.  This was sort of my plan anyway after the whole toaster oven incident back in December, but with the extra MAMMA MIA! weeks that have ben added on lately, as well as some other unexpected work opportunities...  Just not enough time to get everything done that needs to be done - at least before I head out of town next Wednesday.  It's looking like I'm gonna have quite the crazy weekend - and that weekend may be starting today!

*I was originally going to pack up everything this week, and then put it all in storage during the last week of March, but since I won't be here during the last week of March...

-Ah, they broke into the "Ellen Degeneres Show" to broadcast the Bush-Putin news conference from Bratislava... Ah, well...

As for last night's "American Idol"...

VERY mean spirited.  I can deal with the judge's comments, but the whole elimination process just made me sick.  -And they play that god awful bumper music after they say the name?!?!?!  And then they expect them to sing after that?!??!  And you definitely did not get the best - "put it all out there" - performance from any of the eliminees.  But Judd did go for it a bit on his last phrase.

But, again, just very mean-spirited with the format for the eliminations.  Do you think that's how Fox fires their employees?

Any thoughts?

I caught up on the series the past Sunday when they were having the marathon on Bravo.  Very interesting.

I caught part of the follow up show that ran before the finale - I guess it was last week's episode.  I hope they do another follow up show a couple of months down the line. *And the next time I drive through Middleburg, VA - which really is a very nice town off of Rt. 50, horse country, lots of $$$$ - I'll be sure to look for Wendy Pepper's shop.

DRs MattH & Jennifer:  I HATED the way the producers scripted last night's eliminations on AI.  All the message boards are castigating Ryan Seacrest, but I'm positive he's not responsible for the manner in which it was done.

It SUCKED...and I think outraged fans should let Fox know how they feel (not that Fox has ever given a rat's patootie what fans think).

DRs JRand54 and JoseSPiano:  JAY McCARROLL!  I have to say I thought it would be Kara Saun, but when they started dinging her for the Gucci flavor of some of her designs (I suppose fur and beautiful fits are forbidden to other designers because Gucci is known for these traits????) and remarking about Jay's originality, I knew they'd select him.

I also have to say I thought Jay's clothes were a bit MUCH...and out of the mainstream.  I know some of the fashion divas are always looking for "statements" to make, but for everyday ordinary people, Jay's fashions would be laughed at on Main Street.

None of this means that I find Kara's stuff mainstream.  Hers is more svelte and shiny and ooh-lah-lah glam.  But her aviator-style/Russian winter-style/postal worker-style hats (i.e., skull caps with ear flaps) seemed a bit much.

That brings me to Wendy Pepper who, truly, is the archetypal designer for the mainstream consumer.  I thought her designs were quite good.  She had some very interesting stuff, and that reddish silk number was a showstopper.

I think Kara should have won, but I'm happy for Jay...

Well hang on to your hat, sister woman!

Let's talk about "Mama's Family."  In the beginning, "Mama" was living with her sister Frannie (Rue McClanahan) who had not only a bedroom upstairs, but an office.

When she died (choking on a toothpick in a restaurant's ladies room), Thelma's son Vint and his two children moved in.  BOTH children had rooms upstairs.  The girl had Fran's bedroom and the boy had Fran's office.  Vint lived in the basement.

Later, when the boy and girl moved away to be with their mother, grandson Bubba arrives, and he moves upstairs.  Vint marries Naomi, and for the rest of the series, Vint and Naomi -- who live in the basement -- both want an upstairs bedroom, but there's no room as long as Bubba is there.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE OTHER ROOM??????  There were three...and suddenly, in the final seasons, one has disappeared.

I too am happy for Jay.  Kara Saun has an established career and the word is that she already has a lucrative contract in the looming with that scion of fashion P. Diddy or Sean John or whatever pretentious name he goes by..

I also love THE OPPOSITE SEX and have the VHS - well worth watching.  Yes, the musical numbers are just filler, but they are fun, from the "Broadway" type show numbers a "Banana" calypso number and the title tune with Jim Backus and Dick Shawn wherein co-star Joan Collins flashes her undies, a nice ballad by June Allyson and another "sexy" song by June "Now, Baby, Now" which is hilarious.  And a "rock and roll" song by Jeff Richard (but not really Jeff).  Add Ann Sheridan and Dolores Gray and Ann Miller and it's lots of fun.

segue -- from the Latin sequi and Italian sequire -- meaning "to follow."

Any musical that gives June Allyson three songs (though I'm convinced "A Perfect Love" was dubbed; doesn't sound a bit like June) and Ann Miller NO songs is pretty far OUT THERE! And Dolores only gets the title song sung over the credits.

It just occurred to me that I have never seen Disney's THE GNOME MOBILE....do any DRs have an opinion on this film? Is it worth picking up? I like the cast, but it sort of reminds me of that other Disney little people movie, the name of which escapes me just now (it stars Sean Connery), which I didn't care for all that much.

DARBY O'GILL AND THE LITTLE PEOPLE which I adore.

I think THE GNOME MOBILE is a pan and scan transfer, and I don't have fond memories of it from childhood, but I honestly couldn't comment further since I only saw it once many decades ago.

Well yesterday was my NYC day with the Vixter and her friend,  Jen.  We were tourists, oh yes, we were very touristy!!!

We drove in and parked over at a  garage on 55th , between 5th & 6th and then walked  down 5th to The American Girl Place at 49th & 5th.. we made it intot he Brunch seating , little seats and china dishes were provided for the dolls, and a little box of "conversation starters" was provided along with hot cinnamon buns...I had the Eggs Benedict, which include a small bunch of seedless grapes as a side, very nice the girl's meals were panckaes, in a flower shape and Jen ordered a Yogurt parfait and granola...Lord knows why, it tasted horrible and they had some other very nice chicesa on the menu .. but whatever..

we snapped phots and had the waiter snap photos and then off we went to visit each and every display on all four floors, snapping pictures along the way!!

Then we made our purchases and wandered across the street to  Rockerfeller Center... snapped some more pictures and oh my!  A Build A Bear store!!!   So we wandered over there and the girls looked at each and every display which fortunately was contained on one reasonably small floor while I found a chair  and sat with our bundles and the dolls.

I was tempted to buy you a bear there bk, but thought perhaps it would not be appreciated. They had a bear in a smoking jacket and bunny slippers and I immediately thoought of you! I thought I could name it Bearjamin Kritzer....who knows, if you're very very good, perhaps such a bear could be in your future!!!

Then we walked down to NBC studios, I was going to take the girls on a tour, but the Vixter was not enthused since she says she doesn't watch NBC.  I wasn't going to spend $20 a pop to drag around an unwilling kid so off we went to Times Square.

We, of course, snapped lots o' pictures and then went to Planet Hollywood for lunch where we, for a change of pace, snapped lots of pictures!!

The girls wandered all around and checked out each and every display and put their hands into all the plaster handprints hung along the wall (for those of you who have not been if you put your hands intot he handprints a recording of the actor plays something from one of their movies.  There is also a "paraparazzi walk"  , the wallpaper is photgraphs of photographers with real light bulbs in their camers, and as you walk up the ramp the lights flash and voices call out "ust one more" "Look this way!" "Can I ask you some questions?" and the like. The girls( being 11 & 12) loved it!

Then we walked up to 52nd and bought tickets for  "Little Women" for March and wandered on back to  the car , the Queensbourough Bridge and the Island of Long.

It was a nice day, crisp, maybe 40 degrees, but sunny and windless...

I was wondering DR elmore if you were at the B & N yesterday, we could have dropped in and said  "Howdy" but I wasn't sure if you'd be there.

So that explains why I was E & T yesterday!!!

I would find it VERY hard to believe that the staging of the AI eliminations was Ryan Seacrest's idea. But whoever is to blame should feel ashamed of themselves.

And how on earth do they expect them to give a bravura performance when they've just gotten some of the most shattering news of their lives a few seconds prior? Even the best pros have a hard time focusing, and these guys are doing it live in front of millions of people.

Well, now I have thought of my FAVORITE obscure movie, although DR RODZINSKI is correct - "14 or Fight!"

It is a Paramount film from 1954 starring Rosemary Clooney, Guy Mitchell, Jack Carson, and Cass Daley.  It is a musical western done on stylized sets with a score by Livingston and Evans.  And by now you know I am talking about RED GARTERS.

What a terrific show.  Love the songs, the sets, the costumes, the story.  It's the "code of the west."  With Buddy Ebsen and Frank Faylen in supporting roles.

The songs include "Lady Killer" all about Gene Barry (!), "Brave Man" a lovely ballad, "Man and Woman" by Clooney & Mitchell, the title tune by Clooney doing a modest strip tease on the bar at her Red Garters Saloon!

Available on a mono VHS - it's one of those movies I discovered on tv on a Sunday afternoon 40 years ago and fell in love with.

RED GARTERS!

Started off in Yonkers
Dressed from head to toe.
Then I dropped my bustle off
South of Buffalo.

Please don't tell the sheriff
I been breakin' laws.
'Cos you will find the sheriff
Leadin' the applause.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!  Also has a scene where a horse chases Cass Daley into the frame and then falls down and slides out of the scene on its rump, and from the expressions on its face and the actors, I think it was an accident....  Cass plays an Indian Minnie RedWing.

Oh, my it's so dangerous when Anthony isn't home for lunch. He has auditions today so I went home, dropped off some papers and then went back out again. Where did I go, you ask? Well, I'll tell you. I went to Footlight and while there I purchased the very recently released Original Off-Broadway Cast Recording of The Mad Show starring Linda Lavin, MacIntyre Dixon, Dick Libertini, Paul Sand and Jo Anne Worley. Ted Chapin deconstructs the name Esteban Ria Nido and explains why Sondheim used a "Nom de Plume". I shall listen to this CD at work today or I may wait until tomorrow and listen on Talent Roundup Day.

I also picked up the new cast recording of The Frogs and the new Jamie de Roy CD When I Grow Up. I also picked up the CD to the Disney cartoon, Teacher's Pet featuring the voice of Nathan Lane as a dog who wants to be human. I never saw the movie but I heard it was nice so now I have the CD.

Well obviously, Bubba turned it into a ensuite bathroom!

RED GARTERS is a good obscure choice.

Here are four of mine:

ABOUT FACE:  A musical version of BROTHER RAT starring Gordon Macrae, Eddie Bracken, and Dick Wesson, featuring a young Joel Grey...pre-nose-bob...doing a Jerry Lewis bit.  numbers: Spring has Sprung; Piano, Bass, and Drum.

THREE SAILORS & A GIRL...another Gordo Macrae film, supported by Jane Powell, Gene Nelson, and rotound comedian Jack E. Leonard (an insult comedian before Don Rickles).  With an odd cameo at the end by Burt Lancaster.  With ditties like Home is Where The Heart Is and You Better Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, or I'll Scream...

SHE'S WORKING HER WAY THROUGH COLLEGE...an odd musical where the leads, Ronald Reagen, Phyllis Thaxter, and Don DeFore are all non-singing...and the musical work is done by Gene Nelson and Virginia Mayo.  It is worth it solely for  Gene Nelson's acrobatic number in a gymnasium, AM I IN LOVE?

MISSISSIPPI...Bing Crosby and W.C. Fields in an antebellum concoction with some great Rodgers/Hart songs...SOON, EASY TO REMEMBER, DOWN BY THE RIVER, and a great running bit by Fields ("...I carved my way through a wall of human flesh...dragging my canoe behind me...")

And as a curiosity...

PLAYMATES with Kay Kyser and his band with John Barrymore on his last legs (either this or WORLD PREMIERE with Frances Farmer was his last film).  Barrymore is very sad in this spectacle, but there is a moment where he delivers a snatch of a Shakespearean sililoquy (MacBeth's Tomorrow and Tomorrow...I believe), stopping mid-way and saying: "That's enough of that."  It's a poignant moment that is almost too real, where it looks like his faltering memory can't recall anymoreor his memory of greater glories can't stand anymore... and you get a brief glimpse of the shadow of what he once was...

I remember Eloise very fondly.  There has been a lot of reminicsing (spelling!) about here on the local NPR channels lately with all the talk of turning The Plaza into condos or coops or some such thing...

DR vixmom - Thank you for the delightful description of your Girls' Day in Manhattan.  Sounds like fun!  Do Jen and the Vixter have favorite American Girls?  If I were that age, mine would be Kit, who lives in Cincinnati (near where I live now) during the Depression.

Jen has the Nellie & Samantha dolls from 1905 and a Molly from 1944

The Vixter has a Kirsten, a Swedish immigrant moved to Minnesota (in the 1850's I beleive) which is what sent us down this road in the first place!! I had absolutely put my foot down that I was not going to spend $84 for a doll simply because of a book tie-in and some nice clothes and accessories.  But we were at a garage sale on day and there was a Kirsten, with all her original clothes, less her shoes, in great condition and they were only asking $14...so I bought it.

Well the Vixter played so much with it and took such good care of it that she got the long desired Kaya (1640's Native American) doll for Christmas....and then there was the oriental American Girl Today girl for her birthday, and then this Christmas, she got the American Girl Today doll that looks like her... and yesterday she bought  Marisol, a Hispanic doll from Chicago  whose love is dancing... that one she bought with the American Girl Gift Certificates she had received from a couple of her aunts as Christmas gifts this year... so much for me putting my foot down!!! :D

The one I was interested in was Molly from 1944...she is a contemporary of my mother and I thought that would be a fun thing for the Vixter , but she's not interested ...

Okay HHW men, it is safe to read my posts again... I think I have exhausted this subject!!!

I changed the get-together to tomorrow morning, as I just didn't feel like breaking up the day with too much running around.

I am more than happy to report that the skies are completely and gloriously blue and the sun is shining for all its worth.

DRHisaka,  since I haven't reached the next page, I have no idea if anyone's answered the segue inquiry so I'll answer:  "Segue" is Italian, I believe, meaning to continue to the next piece without interruption.  I would guess from an etymological view, it's a member of the ur-word that derived "sequence."

More obscure-ish musicals...

Don't know if y'all would consider this obscure, but HALLELUJAH I'M A BUM is an all-time favorite of mine. Frank Morgan is very funny in this. Jolson sings "I didn't mean to do it". Rodgers and Hart have a cameo. Yes, a great film.

Pogue's mention of Jack E. Leonard reminds me of a terrible musical that I enjoy, THE FAT SPY. I mean this is bad on every level except the 60s bizarro beach music. The band called the Wild Ones do some great tunes like "Everybody Do the Turtle", a good dance for when things get slow around here. The Wild Ones also provide the title cut for LORD LOVE A DUCK, so I would love a Wild Ones compilation if anyone's listening.

It doesn't get much weirder than THE GREAT GABBO with Erich von Stroheim hamming it up as an insane ventriloquist. This features some realy odd musical numbers that take place on a giant spider web. And the dummy sings a great song about a lollipop.

Finally, this movie is much maligned, but I think a lot of AT LONG LAST LOVE is actually pretty good, especially anything that involves Madeleine Kahn.

Not to toot my own horn but I used a dictionary this very morning to answer Hisaka's other question on the meaning of Persnickity. I was perhaps a bit loquacious (see yesterday's Word of the Day) but I did answer her question, albeit in a rather long-winded manner.
All right, add Ben to my list!   :-*

May I vent?

The March 18 meeting in Cleveland, around which I made all my travel arrangements for the HHW gathering in NYC, has been rescheduled.  So, now I'm stuck with a nonrefundable plane ticket from CLE to LGA, when it would be much more convenient for me to have flown from Cincinnati.  Oh, well, guess I'll just have to have some good CD's to listen to on my (now) unnecessary drive to and from the Cleveland airport.

End of rant.

Poor you!! Is it a very far drive from where you live?  Isn't horrendous how businesses etc can expect you to change your life at the last minute.  I 'm sure if you had decided today that you weren't going to that meeting they would have had some harsh words about  your "late cancellation!"   You have my sympathy

Yes, he is, DR RON.

DR MATTH - Jo Ann Greer did indeed sing "A Perfect Love" for Junie in THE OPPOSITE SEX.  She also sang for Susan Kohner in IMITATION OF LIFE.....love that jazzy number in the sleazy nightclub - before she goes to LA to star at the Moulin Rouge.

Thanks for the info, DR JRand. Jo Ann did Rita Hayworth's vocals in PAL JOEY and AFFAIR IN TRINIDAD, too as well as Gloria Grahame's in THE BIG HEAT and a number of others. She was a busy gal behind the scenes.

V.S.

that are often found on the bottoms of pages with a page turn?

DRMatthew, I believe it stands for "volte subito," which means one fast page turn!

Jed, Do we ever see a bathroom off Mike and Carol's room? Granted, I believe there were parts of the house that existed that we never saw. We do get a rare glimpse into a laundry room a couple of times. I've always thought there could be a bathroom off of that. But is the evidence of a parental bathroom merely anecdotal or is it seen at some point? I have no recall of it. The mind boggles! And I am one of six kids who lived in a house that had only one bathroom. There was one in the basement but it was too scary down there.

I have read only half of today's posts so far, but one of my favorite obscure musicals is, "So this is Paris" with Tony Curtis, Gloria DeHaven and Gene Nelson.  It's not at all great, but it's cute.  It was on television a lot when I was kid, so that's probably why I ended up seeing it so much.

Jack already named "Red Garters" but he forgot Joanne Gilbert.  I love Joanne Gilbert and wished she'd have released more records.

I also loved the Donald O'Connor and Peggy Ryan musicals at Universal.  You never see these movies anymore, and they were so cute.

I remember reading once that Kim Novak lived in the house built in the movie.  It could have ben publicity though.  For some time she lived on Tortuga Way in Bel-Air (?), so could the house be there?

Thank you all for the good wishes since I am now a God.

AND thanks for all the "Bend" cities.  It was enough to give me the bends!

DR KERRY I also read that Kim Novak lived in the house built for STRANGERS WHEN WE MEET.....so it must be true if both of us say it.

You know of course who had a small tiny unbilled part in SO THIS IS PARIS?

Yes it was Miss Allison Hayes!
Title: Re:SEGUE
Post by: Kerry on February 24, 2005, 03:38:06 PM
Wow!  It's been decades since I've seen the movie, but where is Ms. Hayes in it?

More obscure musicals:
"Just For You"  - you even get "Zing a Little Zong"

"Follow That Dream"-- a cute Elvis musical before he became so... Elvis

Did "High Time" have enough songs in it to be considered a musical?  Also very cute,  Speaking of cute, you get Fabian in this one.

I'm fond of "Lord Love a Duck," but I never thought of it as a musical.  What a bizarre film.

Finally, this movie is much maligned, but I think a lot of AT LONG LAST LOVE is actually pretty good, especially anything that involves Madeleine Kahn.

I am ashamed to admit it, but I haven't seen many of the already mentioned movies at all.  So, the one that I have seen (most recently, anyway) is "At Long Last Love."  Put that on my list.  I love Madeline Kahn, also and I thought that Eileen Brennen was a hoot!  I liked Cybill Shepherd but not Burt Reynolds (in just about anything, actually).  And Duilio Del Prete was just pretty darned cute! ;D

As for the Brady's having a bathroom...

I seem to remember a clip or two of Mike and/or Carol in a bathroom, or at least looking in a mirror that was not part of the bedroom proper.  I can even picture the wallpaper - light blue with some design on it - almost like the wallcovering in the bedroom.  Very coordinated.

I've always reckoned (I reckon) they didn't want to come off as being above middle class in their representation of these families.  But still....six kids, a housekeeper AND Mike and Carol and ONLY ONE BATHROOM?

Jane - My book group decided to change our meeting for The Kite Runner to March 31, so not only can I attend, but I'm hosting.  Want to come?

The drive home tonight was nearly uneventful, however just before I got to my Mom's, to pick up the Vixter, I hit a slick patch as I was going around a corner and started spinning in a beautiful slow motion 360  unfortunately there was a big garbage truck with a snowplow attached right in my path and I thought I was going to meet my Maker...fortunately the truck saw me and stopped  and swerved and I gracefully slid past  uninjured --- WHEW!!! And the snow continues!!

Yikes!  I just got off the phone with my mom, who was telling me about my sister in Michigan having almost the identical experience a few days ago.  She's OK, but did $5000 damage to her car.

I know, I know... I'll let you know when she gets one <sigh> ::).

I'm back from my lovely dinner with Vinnie.  I was "pretty" good - had a Chinese Chicken Salad and their coconut shrimp appetizer, and two big pieces of bread, but that's it for the entire day.  More about the dinner in the notes.

Here is Teddy and me after the new highlighting.  You can't really see my hair.  Oh, Teddy is on the left, for anyone that's confoosed..

Charles,
Thanks for your thumbs up on "Follow That Dream."  I like the songs too and sprung for the EP 45 about 10 years ago.  The songs have since accompanied on many a car trip.

Bruce, Pogue and all Angelenos (or anyone across the great USA), who was Mark Taper for whom the Forum is named?  I know who the Ahmansons are, but when I have tried to find Mark Taper on google, I just keep getting sites mentioning tickets for events at the Forum (even when I exclude the word"Forum").  After wading through a couple hundred links, I thought I'd aks if anyone knew.
I don't need to know for any other reason than I wondered about it.  Like Jed, this is the crap MY brain is filled with (what an eclectic, useless bunch of stuff is in my head).

IT'S A GREAT FEELING has some great, fun songs with a plot that was really awful. All of Doris' Warner musicals had some terrific tunes: I love "We're Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight" in APRIL IN PARIS. Wouldn't part with my laserdiscs for anything (unless they come out on DVD one of these days.)

Here's an obscure Warner Bros. musical I wonder if anyone here knows about. It is called GOING PLACES from 1938 with Louis Armstrong, Dick Powell, Anita Louise, Ronald Reagan and more. Songs by Harry Warren and Johnny Mercer including Jeepers Creepers and Mutiny in the Nursery. Unavailable ever on VHS or DVD.

I only know of it because I have one of those bootleg LPs with the soundtrack to it on one side and LADY BE GOOD on the other side. Really good tunes.

MISSISSIPPI is a good movie as Charles Pogue mentioned. When I saw it, I felt Bing looked a little strange though. Later I read that he had put on a lot of weight, so he was actually wearing a girdle throughout the movie which made him uncomfortable.

As the lone poster, I shall now post a list of Rod McKuen songs that feature the word "lone" or some variant. This would make a great medley for the most depressing album of all time:

Lonesome Cities
Loneliness in Crowds
Loneliness is No Virgin to Me
The Loner
The Lonely Things
Gee it's Nice to Be Alone
I'll Never Be Alone
I Live Alone
A Man Alone
Hi Lonesome
Every Loner Has to Go Alone

Good Evening!

Phase 1 of ?? of my excavation is now complete.

-And I had to make sure to take a shower after straightening everything up to wash all the dust out of my hair and off my skin. Actually, there wasn't that much dust, but I always have to clean up after handling corrugated cardboard boxes.  I get a sort of rash from the cardboard - guess it must me some chemical.  ??  So... In any case...

There are three piles of bundled magazines sitting in my living room, and a few bundles of assorted papers/music/miscellany.

To those DRs asking about my "music recycling", I'll see what I can do.  It all comes down to time right now.  We shall see...

But progress is being made.

:)

Unfortunately, after I was done cleaning, I noticed there was a message on my cell phone.  It was a call asking if I would be interested in playing keyboards for an upcoming show in town.  The show I was "supposed" to be doing this spring, but was told a couple of weeks after the fact that I was no longer a part of the project.  Yadda, yadda, yadda.  So...

My dilemma is whether or not I should call them - well, actually the musical director - and tell him, "Sorry, I'm not interested in playing for the show.  At all."  I have a feeling the current MD has no idea of my "history" with the project, but I just know that I won't be able to hide any "attitude" in my voice.  Yes, I am still bitter.

My current inclination is to contact the director - the one who blew me off - and ask him to tell the music director that I am not interested.  At all.

I'm just amazed that no one on the staff has clued the MD in that I should be the LAST person to be called for this show.  The Last!

Just one of those weird things...

Ah, well...

Yet another reason I needed to take a shower.  ;)

Strangely enough, I know this movie.  When I was in college, one of the grad students put together her own Harry Warren revue for her graduation/thesis project.  I was helping her out, and we found out that the university's library had/has a print of the movie.  So we checked it out, and viewed it in in the theatre's theatre one afternoon.  Fun stuff!

That's unbelievable that you've seen that, JoseS! The magic of HHW shines through again.

Also unbelievable is the way this group keeps yanking your chain about playing for that show. Just make sure and remember if you call the director who blew you off, he could tell the new person anything. Try and make you look bad or whatever. If this is at all a concern, it might be better for you to call the person who just called you and tell them in your own words what the deal is. Not that you are seeking my input! :)

No packages for me today!  :(

I came home for lunch and found a package from England in my mailbox!  It was from www.dresscircle.co.uk and it was the Dutch cast recording of Stephen Sondheim's Passion!  I just couldn't pass it up...besides, I paid for it with my income tax refund!  I didn't get a chance to listen to it yet (I left it at work), but the booklet has the complete lyrics and some pictures from the production.  Even though the picture on the cover is of the three main actors, they're not in character costumes/make-up.  The guy is kind of scary looking (and in the show pictures, he's not) and BOTH the women are quite attractive (but in the show pictures, Fosca is not). ::)

Last night, JRand, I re-signed up for iTunes (it had been too long) and the certificate worked!!  Thank you!!  I looked up The Manhattan Transfer (my favorite group in the world) and already had everything that they had available.  Looking up Sondheim (what else), they had a 71 minute interview with Stephen Sondheim, Barbara Cook and Stephen Holden.  I made a CD (only one track, though) and a little booklet.  It cost as much as eight individual songs, but it seems pretty cool.  I'll look around more and see what else is available.  I still have about $1.40 or so left from the gift certificate (through very kind courtesy of JRand)...and I might buy some songs even after the gift certificate is used up.

I viewed one you talked about the other night... THE AGONY & THE ECSTASY.  I caught the last hour...I found it a tad ponderous, although eminently watchable.  I thought the way the skirted around his homosexuality clever.  "I can't love you, Diane Cilento, because I pour all my passion in to my work..."
