Well, you've read the notes, you've titled the notes, the notes have titled you, and now it is time for you to post until the titled cows (Lord and Lady Cow) come home.
-
And the word of the day is: BLATHER!
-
Well, I just got home from an infinite subway ride back from the East Village where I was having a couple brews with a boyhood pal. I stopped by Footlight Records and didn't have nearly enough time to really dig in, but I purchased a SHOCK TREATMENT soundtrack and a HIGH TIME soundtrack by Henry Mancini since it had been on the mind of late. Really minimalistic album cover on the latter. They are having a sale right now and the whole purchase ran me $3.28 or so.
The soundtrack I am seeking but cannot find is from a rare film called THE PEOPLE NEXT DOOR. Somebody had streamed this on the web a couple months back and the songs were quite enjoyable in an early 70s kind of way.
Blather blather
-
BK, is there any CD out there that contains the tune "Bachelor Bills"?
-
There is an out-of-print CD entitled The Music of Bruce Kimmel on Colossus Records, which was a subsidiary of Varese Sarabande. It had the complete Nudie soundtrack, along with all the songs from The Creature Wasn't Nice (aka Spaceship, aka Naked Space), songs from various segments of the cable series Likely Stories, plus some newly-written (at the time) songs.
-
The probably still have a copy at Footlight.
BLATHER!
Where are our late-night denizens.
-
Let's have some titles for the notes. You can't win a sparkling prize if you don't submit a title.
-
I'm dancing the tango right now.
-
I love the SHOCK TREATMENT soundtrack.
I think these should be the HYPNOTIC EVIL EYE NOTES!
-
Some Notes Title Ideas:
The Art of Ribaldry
Bacon and Cactus
The Forgotten Food of the Day
The Susan Anspach Notes
Notes on the Perception of Imaginary Differences
-
"Bachelor Bills" always makes me laugh....MR BK and Miss Cindy Williams & said Creature are very enjoyable!
By the way "I want to eat your face."
-
BLATHER: coming from an old Norse word. It can be used as either a verb, meaning to talk foolishly at length, or as a noun, referring to what is said (or written) by the person who is blathering.
The person who is blathering, incidentally, is called a BLATHERSKITE. I personally haven't heard this word used, however, although I have heard them called BLATHERING IDIOTS, which means the same thing. Since I don't care for name-calling, I'll just let these last two terms slip by. :P
-
JRand-
You and I are Shock Treatment all the way!
A salute to the great Jessica Harper, who is also a part of the recently mentioned PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE, composed by Paul Williams who did the recently mentioned BUGSY MALONE which features Scott Baio who was on HAPPY DAYS with the recently mentioned LINDA PURL who was recently seen by the always mentioned bk who created the very recently mentioned THE CREATURE WASN'T NICE which featured my namesake Gerrit Graham who has one of his best roles in PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE.
-
Let's not use the word "blather" as today's title. The associations would be unfortunate, rude, and besides, the notes today were far too short to qualify.
That doesn't read too well. :-\
-
Oh, yes, the FOOD OF THE DAY: COOKIES. You must eat some kind of cookie and/or cookies and give us a full report on the type, the taste, and the size.
-
I wish I had some COOKIES right now to get rid of this garlic that is permeating the entirety of me.
BLATHER!
-
I believe I just qualified as a blatherskite.
I've also heard "blithering idiot".
And seen the classic film BLATHERING HEIGHTS.
-
Here is my suggestion for a title for the notes: Isocrates' Ideas About Arete in Rhetoric.
-
I kinda miss Debbie Allen's attempts at choreography for the Best Costuming Oscars. I specifically recall one year where she had everyone dancing in costumes from the films nominated, and one of the films was a war drama, either WWII or Nam. Since this was all being linked together with a disco beat, the results were laughable.
-
BLATHER!
COOKIES!
-
Welcome seven GUESTS. We're talkin' about memorable Oscar moments. And BLATHER. And COOKIES.
-
Well, the Rob Lowe thing was the first thing that came to my mind. But honestly, I really detested when Billy Crystal called out to Bill Murray last year after he didn't win the award. Besides calling attention to someone who probably didn't want it at that moment, the implication was that the winner was not the popular choice, and that Murray was more worthy of consolation than anyone else who did not win.
-
Der Brucer has been nagging me lately: he wants more chocolate chip cookies.
-
The title of the notes could be:
Garlic, and Chocolate, and Crab, oh my!
-
I'd ask "Who's Bill Murray ;D," but lately there have been a few DRs who find it necessary to explain my jokes. It kind of spoils the effect. :-\
-
Well, I guess I'll toddle off to the bedroom environment. And where might Marc Chapeaux be this fine evening?
And remember: BLATHER!
And COOKIES.
-
There's no time to sit and blather,
when asleep I would be rather,
and no one keeps a cow ( Lord or Lady)for a friend!
good night, and my sincere apologies to Mr. Sondheim
-
Score one for the East Coast! Three of us here while all is quiet on the western front. That's at 4:15 est.
Alas, I am now in near-collapse mode.
I leave with a lyric for anyone to guess from what song it comes:
"Summer was a-comin' in but fast."
Goodly night to all!
-
aha!
That Sunday That Summer, Rodzinski-I like Nat King Cole too!
And the East Coast rests at last........
-
Here, as well.
-
The title of the notes is:
To Be Crab or To Be Garlic, That is The Question.
-
Notes Title:
On A Clear Day You Can See The Notes
-
Harry Simeone of the Harry Simeone Chorale passed away at age 94....I love, love, love (that is 3 loves) his LITTLE DRUMMER BOY album!!
-
Hisaka, last night I watched a movie starring Akira Kobayashi...are you familiar with him?
I found out that he was also a singer and I have ordered one of his CDs from Amazon.com.
-
A couple of favorite Oscar moments:
Woody Allen's appearance in the Oscar year after 9/11. He's always disdained the Oscars but appeared there on behalf of his beloved New York, and I had tears in my eyes first from laughing at his hilarious monologue, and then from his touching words of thanks.
Katharine Hepburn's shocking, sudden appearance (with no PR to prepare us she was going to appear) to present the Irving Thalberg Award to one of her longtime producers Laurence Weingarten.
The streaker and David Niven's hilarious comment about his "shortcomings."
-
I have to say that every time Yves Montand shouted "DAAAISSY GAAMMBBOOOLLLL," I just burst out laughing. Unintentionally awful and a bad performance overall I have lways thought. And though he can certainly carry a tune, his overuse of grace notes really gets on my nerves. Nope, for me, he ruins the movie utterly.
I liked ALL of the new songs added, but I will say that Barbra's enunciation during "Hurry, It's Lovely Up Here" leaves a lot to be desired. People who put down Patti Lupone's enunciation might be surprised how garbled the words of this sound coming from the person at the time I would have called the world's best singer.
-
I also remember Johnny Carson jabbing with Miss Piggy the year she didn't get a nomination for THE MUPPET MOVIE.
Miss Piggy: "Jonathon, don't you think I deserved the Oscar?"
Johnny: "Oscar Meyer maybe."
-
I also remember John Wayne and Susan Heyward made their final appearances on different Oscar shows before dying some weeks later. In Susan's case, I wouldn't have guessed she was so ill. She looked stunning.
John Wayne looked so frail and his voice was so ravaged that I knew it was just a matter of time.
I also remember Elizabeth Taylor coming out in an astonishing yellow gown to present the Best Picture Oscar (which was won by THE STING). I have never seen her look more beautiful. The audience was stunned by the way she looked. You could actually hear them gasp when she walked out.
-
Speaking of THE STING, TCM presented it last night properly letterboxed.
COme on, Universal! Isn't it about time you give the deluxe treatment to one of your treasures? All that's available now is a pan and scan transfer with no extras at all.
And while you're at it, remaster the sound so we can hear those Joplin rags in surround, if you please.
-
My favorite Oscar moment was when Patricia Neal appeared following the series of strokes that almost killed her. For a long time, it seemed that she would never survive the strokes, and if she did, would never walk again. And yet, when she appeared, it was so incredible and so unexpected, that the ovation and the tears seemed to go on forever. And for once, the standing ovation seemed spontaneous and sincere.
-
To be fair, it's not a pan-and-scan transfer, it's open matte. Not that that excuses them from giving us a proper 1:85 transfer.
Yes, Mr. Montand's accent does cause some giggles, but I just like his "presence". And I'll take a few grace notes anyday over what Barbra does in this film. Her voice sounds great - her changing the notes of songs (this isn't a club act, it's a film, and a CHARACTER), is terrible.
BLATHER!
More importantly, what am I doing up at seven-thirty?
-
Nobody here but us chickens.
Waiting for more notes titles, and waiting for COOKIES. I, myself, will be cookie enabled today.
-
Hurry, it's lonely up here!
Actually, I'm just getting ready to head out to my family buffet (as opposed to Chinese buffet). We don't have a food of the day, so I'll just eat everything.
-
Yes, I guess I should have called it a full frame transfer. But how great would this look in an anamorphic transfer. All those rich browns. Oh, it just irritates me that these studios are so uncaring about their treasures.
-
A lost day for me. The surgery still acts up, after 10 weeks, keeping me home from B&N today, and I fear it will indeed have to be redone. UGH!
I thought DRRodzinski had several good ideas for today's notes title, and all I could think of was "To Whom It May Concern," so I can offer nothing more than this (a CANDIDE reference).
I'm listening to the great Anna Russell on CD right now, a bit bummed that the Sony folk elected to cut from the first CD several sections from the original LP, "I Gave My Love A Cherry" (for the untrained singer) and "My Heart is Red" (for the tone-deaf singer). I'm also wondering if we'll get a fourth CD with all of "Anna Russell's Guide to Concert Audiences" with her Piaf-like "Le Derniere Cigarette."
Oscar moments: Barbra Streisand's god-awful see-through number
the streaker
Bob Hope as host
-
I'm sure Universal will revisit The Sting and do it right. I mean, if they can do a gorgeous Fahrenheit 451 then they can do anything.
-
elmore, Vinnie sent his best to you.
-
She of the Evil Eye should be here pretty soon and then I shall have to hie myself out of here.
-
Good Morning!
Good sleep last night. Now I just need to decid where the rest of the day will take me. I'm thinking I may head up to Fairfax around 3:00 after I finish taking care of some stuff around the apartment. We'll see.
But until then...
-
Favorite Oscar telecast moment - 1991, when "Be Our Guest" was nominated for best song and they had the people behind the voices sing it, including Jerry Orbach.
-
The Title of the Notes Is...
The Tale of the Randy Vicar and the Head of Garlic
My Pillow Smells Of Garlic
The Morning After... Garlic
Do You Have An Altoid?
Oh, Sorry - I Had Garlic Last Night
I'm In Love With A Clove
On A Clear Day You Can Smell Me Forever
Garlic On My Plate, Garlic In My Pores
A Clove Is A Clove Is A Clove

DR elmore - FEEL BETTER VIBES!~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Well, I better get off my duff - as opposed to my Swank (???) - before any more "forward motion" leaves my body. Gotta keep moving.
Laters...
-
Oh! Did someone say BLATHER?
Or was that COOKIES I heard?
...Oooohhhh.... COOKIES!
-
Well....my favorite Oscar moment.....hmmmm....some have been mentioned, including Susan Hayward....
I liked when Barbara Stanwyck got a Lifetime Oscar presented by her Golden Boy William Holden.
And Lucille Ball (looking like a million dollars) and Bob Hope coming out to give an award about a month before she passed away.
MY FAVORITE FAVORITE award show moment though was on the Emmy Awards when Red Skelton came out to give the award for sound and only said every other word out loud pretending to have mike trouble....LOL.
Which reminds me of the time Red was down in Vincennes Indiana, his home town, where a bridge was renamed in his honor. Lots of boring speeches by politicians during a ceremony in the middle of the structure. Then Red was introduced, stood up, walked to the microphone and said: "Okay, everybody get off my bridge!"
-
DR Elmore - Sorry you're not feeling well today :-\
Cookies in my brown-bag lunch: Golden Oreos.
-
"or downright or even upleft weird. In that latter category, I vote for the Allan Carr-produced Oscarcast where Rob Lowe did a musical number with Snow White. I remember sitting there thinking that the world of the Oscars had truly reached its nadir."
See Bruce-- just when you thought they couldn't get any lower. That was a high point compared to some of the more recent years.
-
I couldn't attach what I wanted.
-
The streaker and David Niven's hilarious comment about his "shortcomings."
Sorry, but that moment was too "scripted" for my tastes. I felt at the time that they had supplied a streaker themselves, just so Niven could give the line. :P
-
Oh, yes, the FOOD OF THE DAY: COOKIES. You must eat some kind of cookie and/or cookies and give us a full report on the type, the taste, and the size.
I had cookies today (already!) and this was BEFORE I read that cookies were the FOOD OF THE DAY! I went to Subway for an early brunch (I had a foot-long dijon turkey, ham and bacon melt) and the guy behind the counter asked if I wanted chips or anything else and I looked at the cookies in the display case that was right next to me and caved in. I got a white chocolate macadamia nut cookie (the best) and an M&M cookie (second best). AND the best part is that the guy said that since they were "day old" cookies, he wouldn't charge me for them! ;D Free is always good!
-
I can't stay because I have to get back to my paper ("Isocrates' Ideas About Arete In Rhetoric" - I can't wait!), but I wanted to say that today is my great aunt Pearl's 100th birthday.
-
Good morning all
I am writing from the studio of my parent's home in Ellensburg. I came to town yesterday to see a concert last night by the male singing group Chanticleer. For those of you who have never heard of this group, you should check them out! It was easily one of the best concerts I've been to in my entire life. The group consists of 12 men singing every part from bass to soprano, and the male soprano voices are some of the most beautiful you will ever hear. DR Jed also attended the concert, and he can confirm my report that it was spectacular.
JMK - About the What If DVD...I'm honestly not sure how any fingerprints would have ended up on it. DR Jed and I watched it together, and afterwards we put it back in its jewel case and it was not touched again. At any rate, I'm glad you were able to clean it and that it worked fine afterwards.
I am drinking a cup of real brewed coffee. After a month of powdered flavored stuff, it's a bit of heaven.
-
Happy birthday Aunt Pearl! Wow!
And feel better vibes to Mr. Elmore3003!

I stumbled across this handy little device for the kitchen (http://www.viceversa.com/Dynamic/Products,intCategoryID,34,intItemID,1447.html) while surfing. Problem is, it doesn't go with my own kitchen: wrong color. :'(
-
I hear Marc Chapeaux is off doing the Carioca.
BLATHER is one of my favourite words, frequenthly invoke when engaged in conversations with and/or about studio executives or folks of a younger generation who don't seem to have a clue about this business and its legacy and just spout innocent but ignorant BLATHER about it. It is often used in conjunction with BLITHERING and FLUMMERY.
Somehow I seem to be on a Rod Steiger jag of late yesterday I caught bits of THE BIG KNIFE, watched a DVD of NO WAY TO TREAT A LADY, and just now finished watching JUBAL where Rod plays a very nasty bad man called, of all things, Pinky...and he doesn't look anything like Jeanne Crain.
-
Chanticleer is indeed a fine musical congregation.
I forgot an Oscar moment....or I guess I should say, I remembered another one.
Jane Fonda was a very politically outspoken young lady and had taken a stand on many issues. When she was nominated for the Best Actress Award for KLUTE - many people were afraid that she would use the podium to make a political statement, etc. We really didn't know what would happen, because Jane said what Jane wanted to.
SHE WON!! She walked to the stage, beautifully dressed, gave a few thanks, drew a breath and said: "There are many things to say, but this is not the time or the place." And walked off. Classy lady.....always will be. Jane Fonda.
-
I don't remember many Oscarcast moments (I remember all those that have been mentioned). I remember my first Oscars the year I moved out here. I went with a neighbour of mine and actually sat in the gallery, as the stars walked the red carpet. I remember Kim Novack looking absolutely ravishing.
It was the year that Laurence Olivier was, I think, getting a special Oscar. He walked down the red carpet and none of the folks with microphones paid any attention to him at all...even Army Archerd missed him. I shouted, "God Bless, Sir Laurence!" He looked up and blew me a kiss. And about a dozen heads of a dozen interviewers swerved at my shout to suddenly look for Sir Larry, but by that time he was through the gauntlet.
-
slow news day.
-
All right, as long as the subject is cookies.... (http://www.girlscouts.org/program/gs_cookies/)
-
I have returned from helping my father pick up the remnants of last night's concert. I am now job searching whilst drinking my second cup of coffee and eating some easter chocolates. Not exciting news, but the best I can come up with.
-
Or maybe we should be talking about cookies (http://www.cookiecentral.com/)....

I have returned from helping my father pick up the remnants of last night's concert. I am now job searching whilst drinking my second cup of coffee and eating some easter chocolates. Not exciting news, but the best I can come up with.
Last year's or in anticipation?
-
Time to take a break. I've still got dinner to plan.
-
This morning I went for a walk to see wildflowers, and this is what I found:
-
"or downright or even upleft weird.
That's for sure; with Ro Blow, I mean... Rob Lowe they could not get... lower! :D
Didn't the Disney Company ask the Academy for apologies, after that Snow incident?!
If she had married Lowe, she would have become Snow Lowe! ;)
Gee! Sir Lawrence has blown me away in the past, but he's never blown a kiss at me! (But then.... rumors would have started!)
Now it is too late! Story of my life!
That's it! Story of my Life is the title of my next book! :)
FEEL BETTER SOON LARRY!
No fun hurting, I know!
We keep you in our thoughts! :-*
-
This morning I went for a walk to see wildflowers, and this is what I found:
Pretty flowers indeed!
"He can call me a flower if he wants to!"(Giggle, giggle!)
-- Coming out in DVD form, first time ever in the US, March 1st! Platinum Edition.
Already out here since February 16th! (Good Old Europe! ;))
-
Oh, cookies are today's food! OK, I had those even before I went to the buffet.
-
If I remember correctly, Disney threatened to sue the Academy because they held the copyright on that rendition of Snow White, and the Academy had not asked for permission to use it. The next day, the Academy issued a formal apology to the Disney company. The plan to sue was dropped.
-
A friend has invited me over this evening for a movie night, and I volunteered to bring THE VILLAGE which neither he nor I have yet seen. So it looks like I'll be seeing it tonight.
-
Another Oscar highlight: Angela Lansbury doing a show-stopping rendition of "Thoroughly Modern Millie."
-
Well, I had hoped Universal would redo THE STING in 2003 for its 30th Anniversary, but they missed the boat. By 2008 (the 35th anniversary), we'll be into HD-DVD, so maybe that's when they'll redo it.
-
Yeah, Disney wants to sue nursery schools who paint images of Mickey and Donald on their buildings too. And God knows the hoops they've put the Winnie the Pooh heirs through. They are corporate pigs. One of the worst acts of Congress in the last few years has been the copyright extension law. It has helped the corporations keep a stranglehold on work that should have gone into public domain. If the heirs of an author haven't milked his literary output to their benefit during the 75 years after his death, it's time for them to go out and get a real job.

For cookie day, allow me to introduce an Ohio-based, woman-owned company:

Boy, do I agree about the copyright extension law.
Tammy has removed the TV from the premises.
I must do a couple of errands, then I shall return.

Good Afternoon!
Well, since the sun was out, and the temp had just broken the 50 degree mark, I decided to escape from the apartment for a while and take a nice run over at the University of Richmond. Perfect weather for a good run. I'm thinking that I shall try to go past my current three mile mark, and aim for four, if not four and a half.
Once I got home, I was able to give my new SacroWedgy a try. I had read about the SacroWedgy on a few running and health websites. It helps realign the lower spine and allows the hips to fully stretch and relax. It's basically a wedge of hard rubber that you place under your pelvis. You lie down on it, then you breathe and relax. Very passive and relaxing. The instructions say not to expect immediate results, but I could definitely tell that it was helping me to get some stretch in my hip flexors - which is where I've been having issues lately. -I'm still VERY thankful it's not appendicitis or gallstones! And I'm sure it will come in very handy next week while I'm at SETCs in Greensboro - I'll be sitting at a piano from about 10:00-7:30 playing auditions for three days in a row.
If anyone is interested, here's the website:
http://www.sacrowedgy.com
*I'll have to see if my testimonial changes after a few more days of use.
;)

Ah! I believe she and her company have been featured on a segment of the Food Network's show, "Food Finds".

DR DearReaderLaura - Beautiful picture!
A few summers ago when I was working at the New Harmony Theatre in Evansville, IN, one of the actresses came back from the dinner break with a beautiful bouquet of wildflowers she had picked in the field next to the rehearsal hall. Unfortunately, as the rehearsal continued that night, she started getting a bit itchy, and little red spots started appearing on her arms. The dreaded "chiggers". Needless to say, she was a bit miserable for the next day or two. But at least the flowers were beautiful.
-
OH! And as of yesterday, I will be back at the New Harmony Theatre this summer! I will be the Musical Director and pianist for their production of As Thousand Cheer. -Whose cast recording was produced by our very own BK! And I'll be playing their NYC auditions right after I get done in Greensboro. Then it's onto Penny's show... Then...
OH! And I can't wait to get back to some of my own favorite Evansville food finds: Lib's Chocolates, breakfasts at Rosie's Diner, the practically ambrosial fried chicken at the Bon Ton Mini Mart (which is actually in Henderson, KY - only about 30 minutes from campus - Thank You, Jane and Michael Stern), and Grippo's Potato Chips (which are a "regional chip" made in Cincinnati). The BBQ are my favorite.
It's all about the food!
:D
-
OH!!! And the new flavors now!
http://www.grippopotatochips.com
The Hot Dill Pickle flavor sounds very intriguing - and heartburn inducing. But I bet it would/will be a good burn. ;)
DRs elmore and Pogue - Do you Grippo?
-
Oh, and if you haven't guessed by now, I haven't travelled up to Fairfax today. But I'm pretty sure I'll be going tomorrow.
I just wanted to be "home" today - especially since I will not "home" here for much longer.
-
OHH!!!!!
Preeeeeeee-senting....
PAGE FOUR!!!!!!!!!

Whew!
My work here is done for now. Now I must get back to my work "here".

Yves Montand was NOT the first Francophone to play the role of Marc Chabot. Louis Jordan played him in the pre-Broadway engagement of On a Clear Day...in Boston. Also the plot for the film version was altered by Lerner, Dropping many songs and characters. Sort of like what he did to Paint Your Wagon.
The three musical numbers that were dropped from the film were Wait Till We're 65. Very obvious where it was cut. Who Is There Amoung Us Who Knows. Never quite sure where it went, but I suspect the scene where Nicholson plays the Sitar.
There was also a number called ESP for which I never heard a recording of and only seen a few stills from. The number would have should all of Daisy's past incarnation and future ones.
Too bad Paramount did show any of the cut #s. They may have sold more copies.
-
Oscar memories?
I wasn;t there, but seen film footage of Hattie McDaniel's scripted accepted speed about being a credited to her race.
-
One Oscar moment I remember is when David Letterman talked about (as a bit) Oprah Winfree and Uma Thurman: Oprah...Uma. Uma...Oprah. :P
-
OH! And as of yesterday, I will be back at the New Harmony Theatre this summer! I will be the Musical Director and pianist for their production of As Thousand Cheer. -Whose cast recording was produced by our very own BK!
DR Jose - Evansville is just a nice weekend trip from where I live. I've become quite fond of the As Thousands Cheer cast recording produced by our very own BK, so maybe my DH Richard and I could take a little excursion to see the show when you're there!
-
Is this a slow newsday here at haineshisway.com?
Is the food of the day COOKIES? Have we heard enough about the COOKIES you hainsies/kimlets have eaten? I should think not.
Do we have a topic of the day? Have we had enough postings about it? I should think not.
BLATHER!
-
Oh, oh, oh! Nice to know there is lots of work in your future, DR Jose!
I’m sorry to hear that your not feeling well DR Elmore. Good health vibes your way.
I wanted to say that I remember seeing Shock Treatment but don’t remember to many details about it. I don’t think it was as good as Rocky Horror was.
I have many memories of Rocky Horror. The toast, the rice, the newspaper, the lighter and the TP (Scott’s brand, of course). All necessary equipment for going to see the movie. And my Mom asking what did we DO with that stuff at a movie theater? Ahhh, little did she know…..
I’m sorry but I didn’t have any cookies today but I love chocolate chip with either walnuts or pecans. YUM!
Since I don’t bother watching the Oscars, I can’t tell you about any moments that are special to me either.
SWW, I think I shall also sick to beef, chicken and pork.
So DR George, just WHO is Michael Ball?????? ;)
Hey, that should be the title of the day--Who is Michael Ball?
-
DR Jose - Evansville is just a nice weekend trip from where I live. I've become quite fond of the As Thousands Cheer cast recording produced by our very own BK, so maybe my DH Richard and I could take a little excursion to see the show when you're there!
Well... Actually, we're housed and rehearse on the campus of the University of Southern Indiana (great facilities!), and we perform over in New Harmony, Indiana, which is about 30 minutes away.
It truly is an idyllic town. It was founded as a Utopian society (which failed - twice, I believe), and then became a sort of intellectual clearing house and retreat. There is an outdoor church there as well as two labyrinths - one garden, one stone path. It's right on the banks of the Wabash and you can literally walk across the bridge into Illinois. And the Golden Rain Trees are beautiful.
I've done two seasons there, and I'm looking forward to going back.
If you do want to plan a weekend getaway, New Harmony has a wonderful spa/hotel, as well as some B&Bs. If you want something more rustic, you can also camp out or rent cabins nearby.
For more info on the theatre, check out:
http://www.usi.edu/nht/
And for more info on New Harmony, check out:

And I believe there are theatre/hotel/spa packages available too.

Finely got around to watching the Karate Kid III. Funny how your mind plays tricks on you. Remember when said I saw the first DVD and I said the ending wasn't the way I remembered it?
Now I know why. I had the third ending mixed up with the first one.
I'm getting set to watch POTO. The Robert Englund version. Does anyone know if there was a sound track to it? If I recall correctly, there is one song that I would really like to have.
-
Oscar Moments...
Well, I missed the whole Rob Lowe-Snow White debacle - I think I was playing Passion at the time - or some other show. ?? But I did hear about it, and people still refer to it, but I've never seen it. Is there a clip somewhere on the net?
I, too, miss the Debbie Allen dance craptaculars. Get a whole bunch of theatre people in room watching the Oscars; add a Debbie Allen dance number, and... MAGIC TIME!
The Oscar telecast I remember the most was the one the year that "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" was nominated. I was working in Ft. Myers, FL, at the time, and the cast and crew knew how to throw an Oscar party! I even came in third in the Oscar pool! And the hostess' house also had a swimming pool, perfect for post-Oscar dip.
-
Cookies...
I still have some Newman's Own Ginger Crémes left in the kitchen. Like a ginger snap Oreo.
However, I may be making some cookies with my nephew, John Michael, tomorrow. He's a very good helper.
-
ELMORE GOOD, GOOD HEALTH VIBES!

I stumbled across this handy little device for the kitchen (http://www.viceversa.com/Dynamic/Products,intCategoryID,34,intItemID,1447.html) while surfing. Problem is, it doesn't go with my own kitchen: wrong color. :'(
;D

Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com? Watching It Happened to Jane. Not so hot, but it does have Ernie Kovacks in a bad bald cap, and Gene Rayburn, and Dave Garroway and Bill Cullen.
-
BLATHER!
In a mere ninety minutes I'll be watching Red Menace at a neighbor's house. For some reason I thought the buffet supper was before the movie, but it's after. I can't imagine Red Menace is too long, though. Hopefully I'll be home by nine-thirty, so I can go in the Jacuzzi.
-
Ann would you like to find a job closer to home or would you prefer to stay in Tacoma? How long a drive is it between the two locations?
-
Red Menace......
This morning I saw one weird movie on Showtime. It starred Jennifer Jones and Holly Near and Jordan Christopher. It was CULT OF THE DAMNED aka ANGEL ANGEL DOWN WE GO. Whew! Jennifer Jones died in the movie. And she claimed to be 45 years old (in 1969) - she was actually 50 years old...so it wasn't MUCH of a stretch. Her daughter's name in the movie was Tara Nicole and she kept talking about how much she loved the movie GONE WITH THE WIND.
-
I too am upset about the copyright extension law.
But then I think - if anyone is going to make money from a novel or movie why should it be strangers and not descendents of the original creator?
And do we need a lot more PD versions of music, videos, and dvds? I don't have the answer.
-
If we weren't having such a slow news day here at haineshisway.com, we would probably have reached our new plateau by tomorrow. Still could happen if some people would get off their butt cheeks and get some postin' goin' on. Otherwise, Monday will be the day.
-
Has Ann caught up?
-
Jane - the drive between Tacoma and Ellensburg is just about 130 miles. During good weather that's a fairly quick drive, just under two hours. During bad weather it gets a bit longer, because you have to drive over Snoqualmie Pass, which can get icy and snowy. This winter has been disturbingly mild though, so we've had no driving problems whatsoever.
I'm not even looking at jobs over here in eburg. I've become accustomed to life on the west side of the state, and I'd prefer to stay there. Ideally I'd like to stay in Tacoma, but anywhere in the nearby area would suit me just fine.
Eastern and Western Washington are extraordinarily different, in terms of culture, climate, and popluation. In fact I heard just the other day on NPR that people in Spokane are trying to get our President to declare Eastern Washington a state unto itself. Imagine, having 51 states...what would we do with the flag??
-
And where is that dashing and dapper Marc Chapeaux?
Oh, and note to Marc Chapeaux: The knockoff Ray Courts show is next weekend. I'm so there.
-
BLATHER! COOKIES! MAMBO!
-
Our dog is asleep on the living room couch...I can hear him snoring very loudly.
-
Is the knock off at the Beverly Crank?
Is there a website for it? :P
-
It's the voodoo, I tells ya, it's the voodoo.
-
One Oscar moment I remember is when David Letterman talked about (as a bit) Oprah Winfree and Uma Thurman: Oprah...Uma. Uma...Oprah. :P
:P is right. That was so stupid!
One of my all time favorite Oscar moments was when Roberto Begnini won for best actor. ;D
-
Ann are your sugar gliders with you?
Southern Oregon and the very Northern part of California attempted to become the state of Jefferson.
Jefferson is located in the mountain border region of what has more commonly been known as northern California and southern Oregon.
The concept of an individual state formed from the joining of northern California and southern Oregon has existed since the 1850's. The most notable event in the history of the region was the secession movement of 1941 which was begun primarily to draw attention to the need of good roads and bridges into the back country to access vital mineral and timber resources for defense related purposes before the United States was drawn into WWII.
Jefferson would have been the 49th state but the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the ensuing war diverted the nation's attention away from Jefferson long enough for most people to forget about the mountain border counties once again.
-
I have Zoo animal crackers I had shipped to me and Ginger jump-ups from Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor.
Jose I always considered myself a bit obsessed with food from my travels, but next to you I’m an amateur. ;D
-
If you want something more rustic, you can also camp out or rent cabins nearby.
Um, actually, my idea of roughing it is a motel without a pool! New Harmony looks charming, though, and we'll probably try for the weekend of June 11-12. I had my DH check his Sacred Harp (shape-note singing) schedule to see if there's an event nearby for him, but there is not.
-
Ginny this month my book group is reading Three Junes. I see your group has read it. After I have finished the book I shall check out the information on your site.

Jane, I always pick a book for September that relates to the country that will be featured at Middfest, our local international festival, the first weekend in October. We read Three Junes the year that Scotland was featured, but didn't learn too much about the country.
-
That is an interesting way to choose a book. Did you like it? How are you enjoying Kite Runner?
-
That is an interesting way to choose a book. Did you like it? How are you enjoying Kite Runner?
Haven't started The Kite Runner yet because I'm still finishing up the Marie Antoinette bio and I have to reread Nickel and Dimed for www.bigread.org (http://www.bigread.org), which kicks off tomorrow and which is spearheaded largely by the library where I work. On March 9, I'm having a brownbag lunch for local people in the nonprofit community to discuss how the issues raised in Nickel and Dimed impact what they do.
-
Okay, I'm on my way to the little screening and buffet.
Keep the home fries burning until my returning, and I'll have a full report for you. I'm quite certain they will have COOKIES there - if not, I shall stop and get some.
-
Ginny it should be an interesting discussion.
Back to the book theme for your group, sometimes our hostess will serve a food theme to accompaniment the book we are discussing. :D
-
I had some lemon sandwich cookies today. MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
-
Hope you are feeling better, elmore!
The horror of that Snow White thing was Rob Lowe attempting to rock out with Snow White and singing "Proud Mary", which had what to do with the Oscars?? Jose, the official tapes of this have probably been destroyed.
Ginny- Sacred Harp singing is incredible. Your husband is part of a group? That is fantastic.
-
Hello, y'all! I'm finally taking an evening off - jeez, so tired! But many old friends from a hundred years ago have come outa the dark shadows of the cement forest we call Noo Yawk - and I've been having lovely reminiscences and swell dinners with various and sundired of them.
Finally got squared away with a lighting designer and board operator. Gonna get my sound cues re-recorded next a week from Thursday. Found a dandy chair for the set. Now it's just a desk, dressing table, two more chairs, a hatrack, a projection screen, and a partridge in a pear tree - and I'm all set.
I had a really good rehearsal earlier today - my voice is slowly coming back to the stamina level I'll need - how had I forgotten what "in shape" means for a 90-minute monologue with music??? Anyway, the voice gets stronger every day, and I am soooo optimistic as the time nears.
Nice news:
The excellent Peter Filichia is posting a review of JEWISH THIGHS ON BROADWAY, the novel, on theatremania.com on Monday, day after tomorrow. The timing couldn't be better - with the show opening two weeks from Wednesday.
So, that's the news from Aunt Pen!
-
DR Rodzinski - my DH actually sings with 2 Sacred Harp groups, one in Cincinnati and one in Dayton. Last spring, they were invited to appear at 2 Ohio performances of the "Great High Mountain Tour," with Alison Krauss & Union Station.
-
Penny, I'd been wondering about your show preparations. Thank you for keeping us all "in the loop." Looking forward to being there in just 3 (count 'em, 3) weeks!
-
Hi Penny,
Great news. We have good news here too. Bogie is doing very well at the moment-thanks to his high blood pressure meds.
-
That's DOUBLY sacred, Ginny. Really hypnotic music. Let me know if they ever play near Findlay or Toledo and I will have my sister and her family go see it.
JRand and MBarnum- Just the other day I was saying I wished the film music of Arch Hall Jr. was available on CD and as of last Tuesday, Norton Records has released everything Arch ever recorded on a CD called "Wild Guitar". I found it out quite by accident when returning my friend's car to him, they were playing some of the CD on WFMU, a freeform station.

Re: cookies: not many in the past years... although last night I did indulge in some Ben and Jerry's low fat frozen yogurt - flavor: Half-Baked... which is chocolate and vanilla low fat yogurt with chunks of brownies and blobs of chocolate chip cookie dough. Hit the spot, I tell ya.
-
Good ol' Bogie!! whatta cat! say hi to him for me! Tell him his Uncle Bill is flying to Noo Yawk to run tech for me!!
-
Hey, Ginny - I look forward to meeting you finally!
-
Hey, Ginny - I look forward to meeting you finally!
Likewise, Penny. Will your book be for sale at the show?
-
I feel so bad for our boy Elmore - he wasn't at work... that $%^&%^$#@*abcess has plagued him for about 8 months already. I wish that "doctor" would just order another surgical procedure - it's pretty obvious they didn't get it all last time. But when you see him, he is such a good sport, so pleasant and so fun - he hasn't let it interfere with his interactions with friends... but, jeez, how it has impacted his whole life. Most exceleent Health Vibes to our boy.
And, it's ten o'clock - time for beddie bye. I certainly MUST begin getting on a more theatrical schedule... oh, if only I could sleep late...
Anyhow, see some of you SO SOON!!! And the rest, well, I'll see you in my dreams.... niteynite
-
my book will, indeed, be for sale at the concessions counter upstairs in the theater complex!!
-
This morning I went for a walk to see wildflowers, and this is what I found:
Which reminds me: I've got to get some wildflower seeds, and strew them in the lot next door. Ever since the owners ripped out all the trees and brush, it's nothing but a lot of dirt there, and we sure could use some color come spring!
(The deer have had to use the next lot over for their passage through the neighborhood, and we've had a lot more VERY hungry birds at der B's feeders since the razing next door.)
-
Madonna: "This is for you, General Schwartzkoph!" while singing "Sooner or Later" from Dick Tracy.
-
Yes, Louis Jourdan had an annoying way of embellishing his singing with lots of unnecessary grace notes, too. After he heard himself in GIGI (where supposedly his vocals were pieced together from dozens and dozens of takes, he started fancying himself as a singer, so that by the time he did CAN-CAN, he was grace noting all over the place thinking himself a crooner. Ugh!
Honestly, I saw the national tour of ON A CLEAR DAY with John Cullum, and I found the story very hard to follow. The movie cleared up a lot of that confused book.
-
My friend and I didn't end up watching THE VILLAGE. We watched DIE ANOTHER DAY instead (he is a James Bond nut, and I love them myself. He hadn't watched anything in DTS since we set up his home theater system, so this was another acid test. Passed with flying colors).
-
Loneliness is a terrible thing!
-
OK, I've got the old laptop hooked up and ready for use with the Oscars tomorrow night. Hope others will join in on the fun as we critique the fashions and the choices at this year's ceremony.
-
Started watching TWENTIETH CENTURY today. I have to give it to Barrymore. I think he had started reading lines off cue cards by this time (I think he started around the time of GRAND HOTEL). He certainly disguises it very well.
Obviously they've used a bunch of different source materials to piece the film together. SOme shots are crisp and detailed. Others looked duped from old, old sources and are barely in focus (maybe even 16mm sources). Looking forward to finishing it tomorrow before the Oscars
-
Hisaka, last night I watched a movie starring Akira Kobayashi...are you familiar with him?
I saw the picture you posted yesterday and it’s amazing his film has had an English title. He was a big movie star in the late 50s and the 60s as a tough guy, called mite-guy(derived from dynamite!), and was featured in over 100 movies and also released many records. He still sometime appears in films and on tv.
-
This morning I went for a walk to see wildflowers, and this is what I found:
Pretty flowers, DR Laura.
Spring has come around there!? :D
-
I like that, "mite-guy".
-
Well, I'm back, and very sad to see the dearth of postings. The DEARTH of postings. Of course, what's here is cherce, so that's nice. But I'm afraid there will be a LOT of bitch-slapping going on when the errant and truant come waltzing back in.
We'll have to play catch up or at least ketchup tomorrow for our annual Oscar batch.
-
Very dearthful indeed.
-
Do we get to hear how the commie movie was?
The only movie I saw today was a pretty odd one from 1960 called DINOSAURUS. Some dinosaurs and a caveman were unfrozen off this Caribbean island, which isn't that odd a plot for a sci-fi film of that era, but there was a real oddness of tone. The caveman was played totally for laughs, even recreating the Marx Brothers mirror scene with his reflection in a mirror. The villain was really funny, and yet convincingly evil. The people end up beating the tar out of the dinos with construction equipment.
Sometimes HBO will dust off something strange like this instead of showing FALLING DOWN for the one millionth time.
-
I need to get that BETTIE BOOP collection for myself. I went to a BETTIE BOOP store a couple months back in Gilroy, and everything in this store was Bettie Boop merchandise, T-Shirts, phones, fiberglass statues... so I think, hmm... could they have DVDs of actual cartoons? I ask the guy and he looks at me like I'm crazy. Like he didn't know there WERE actual cartoons connected to this merchandise bonanza!
Anyways, there used to be a VHS of some of the best and I remember one where Cab Calloway sings "St. James Infirmary Blues" and it is just an incredibly animated and menacing cartoon. That skinny Pagliaci-type friend of Bettie's is singing and walking through this hellhole where dead bodies and skeletons are littering the background. It was mind-blowing. To me, the Fleischer animation is the most alive and fun.
-
Guess I'm my own Grandmaw, here.
-
So I says to myself, "Self," I says...
-
Nauseating, ain't it?
The commie movie was fun - more about it in the notes, which I'll write now.
BLATHER!
I had to go out and get a little baggie of Grandma's Peanut Butter cookies. They weren't so hot.
-
Good evening!
Well... I ended up heading over to my friend's new place. Bob was taking more measurements, and started putting his bathroom stuff together. Bob is Steve's current apartment-mate, and since Steve just bought a new condo, Bob needed to get a new place, so... It's actually just a few blocks over from me, so I walked over.
After futzing around there, we ended up stopping into the "bar" for about an hour or so. It was fun, if a bit too smoky.
And now I'm back here reading and posting.
Exciting, huh?
-
I had to go out and get a little baggie of Grandma's Peanut Butter cookies. They weren't so hot.
I usually prefer Grandma's Sugar Cookies, or the Iced Lemon. And the Oatmeal Raisin ones are great after about 10 seconds in the microwave.

I have Zoo animal crackers I had shipped to me and Ginger jump-ups from Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor.
Jose I always considered myself a bit obsessed with food from my travels, but next to you I’m an amateur. ;D
<blush>
Zoo animal crackers? You have to have them shipped to you? Are these the one in the Barnum & Bailey boxes? Or are these the ones that come in the large plastic bags?
-
Nobody here but us chickens. PEOPLE, you are embarrassing me in front of our GUESTS.
-
BLATHER!
-
Jose has been sitting there like so much fish for ten minutes. He could have made ten posts in that time.
-
Not only has Ann not caught up, Ann has left the room.

I am my own frenzy.

New notes and word in five count them five minutes.
