T.O.D.

BK, have you ever performed the song “Spelling Backwards” at any of the Kritzerland shows?  The song is so you, I hear you singing it every time I listen to A CAROL CHRISTMAS.

It should be okay.  I rarely drive (if I can avoid it) and have been taking it to the same smog check place since I bought it.

George, you had better be taking your car in for an emissions test every other year, or you will be in a lot of trouble.

Watched episode four of Fosse/Verdon, which already is being called best of series so far - of course the same people saying that said that about each previous episode.  The Pippin stuff was sort of fun, and Michelle Williams was very good.  I simply cannot get with Rockwell or the writers about Fosse himself.

I've never heard of that, and I've never gotten any notification that it needs to be done...that I can remember.  However, I did a little searching and found that it has been happening here in Washington!  Why did I not know about this?? :o

But I also found that the Emission check program ending in 2020 (https://ecology.wa.gov/Air-Climate/Air-quality/Vehicle-emissions/Emissions-check-ends).  Evidently, my car is due to be tested this year anyway, so I guess I'll figure out how/where to get it tested. :-\

Where is testing required?

Most of Clark, King, Pierce, Snohomish and Spokane counties.

Joshie needs my help at City Center, so I will make the trek this morning.  I do not think walking has been such a painful situation in a long, long time, so I am frankly scared about this trip.  I will deposit that San Francisco check on the way down and take enough money with me that I can taxi there or home if walking truly becomes a major ordeal.

We just renewed our car license online, so much eadier than in Oregon.

Be glad, George.  Get to sit in a garage for an hour, then spend more money to send in my registration form.

An hour, that is crazy.  One thing I did like about Oregon was the official drive through center.  Once the car was checked for smog, and a few other things, you could give them the check & paperwork for the renewal.  We still had to wait for the new tags in the mail but it saved a step and was faster.

So it is the age of our car that saved us having it checked?

I awoke to a list of something called the Valley Theatre Awards.  There are so many awards - I think I've heard of this but, you know, the Valley.  Anyway, A Carol Christmas is up for best musical of the year, Doug and I are up for best writing for a play or musical (why no separate category for best score is a shame - I think I'd be the only nominee), two of our actors are up - one lead, one support although they seem to have them swapped, category-wise - I'm up for best director of a musical - I think that's about it.  A few other actors from other Group Rep shows are up, too.  Now, in every category we're up against a theater called the Cupcake - they will take them all - that's what happens every year.  Even though I've directed shows in the Valley before, I think these are fairly new.  I have no idea WHO votes on these or how it works.

Back from the second and last of the shows for students.

And these were KIDS, man. Like, little elementary school kids.

Amazingly, though, they always sit quietly throughout the show, regardless of what it is, and then go crazy when it's time to laugh or applaud or otherwise react. Obviously there are jokes and situations that go right over their heads, but that doesn't matter. Their behavior could almost make one believe that we come cut of the womb knowing how to comport ourselves, and at some point it's all sucked away and has to be relearned.

And here is the original, complete Broadway production number for "The Lusty Month of May," performed by Sierra Boggess and the John Wilson Orchestra from the 2012 BBC Proms.  The conductor is my friend John Wilson. The dance arrangement, as well as the choral arrangement, is by my late - and sorely missed - friend Trude Rittman, best Broadway dance arranger ever. Drag out your Camelot vocal score and follow along.

Whatever this problem I have is, it's nerve-related: I hobbled to the bank in agony, saw a teller, turned around, and walked out with no pain.  I got onto a 104 bus to Seventh Ave and 57th Street.  As soon as I stood up, the agony was back.  I got to City Center around 10:30, where I had a meltdown and crying jag.  Annabelle wants to play and patrol and I can't.  It breaks my heart.  Joshie and I accomplished all the adjustments for Act One.  Around 2:30 my doctor's office called about my stopping in tomorrow around 9:45.

We finished up around 3:15, and I could barely walk out of the building. Joshie came down to the street with me, hailed me a taxi, and I am home in one piece.

Re smog checks:

I take my car to a place in Culver City across from the DMV. It takes about twenty minutes. You can call ahead and ask how long the wait is, but I usually just take it in on a weekday and there's no problem.

TCB, I've definitely been following your condo adventures drama.

Real estate agents usually provide comps to the prospective buyer so that you know what a fair price is relative to other properties. The sold properties are. of course, a better indicator than those unsold, as the sold properties had to get through the appraisal process in most cases. Did your agent do this? There's always the chance that the appraiser was in a bad mood or was ignorant of certain features, but it does establish a range of prices from multiple buyers and multiple appraisers. The ball is largely in the seller's court to prove that their asking price is fair and justified. Sometimes the appraisal isn't reflective of the property's value.

What's the latest?

Congratulations on the nominations!  Vibes you win instead of the Cupcake theater.

It is heartwarming to know it was worth getting up early for the students.

I just got back from Wal-Mart where I got a new battery for my watch.

I hate being without a working watch.

My last watch, a non-battery, died about 2 years ago.

Great watch.  Lasted over 50 years.  My parents gave it to me on my 21st birthday.

I would have had it fixed, but the repair would have cost much more than the watch was worth.

DR ELMORE there's an ad that runs incessantly on our local stations about people with terrible foot pain - debilitating foot pain - and people come in to the Good Feet Store and they can help them.....it's free and if it doesn't work you don't have to buy whatever they are selling. Good Lord. A segment of last night’s dream just came back to me. It began with me working with the keyboard patches for SHREK. That morphed into the Grofe scoring of Gershwin’s Concerto in F that BK announced yesterday. I kept patch-advancing and listening to it (as though to a recording) while following the 1960s red-covered score, but it kept looking and sounding like the standard version. Obviously I’m very curious about that and am looking forward to this release.

I’m in the middle of re-reading Trollope’s Phineas Finn. I wanna go home and read more.

Is this your favorite of his novels?

No. But it's part of the Palliser series, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It's the 150th anniversary of the novel's publication, and the Facebook Anthony Trollope Society is doing a group read in honor of that. So, I guess I told myself I didn't have enough to do already, so I would summarize four chapters. Except I thought the four summaries would run over four days. I didn't read that they would run over two days, and I just had to write the last in a hurry. Thankfully, the chapter was probably the shortest in the book.

I just got this e-mail:

Hi Mr. Kimmel!  I was looking around the internet today for birthday gift ideas for my brother, and ran into a “The Creature Wasn’t Nice” script on eBay that had your name on the cover.  Then I fell down a productivity rabbit hole looking up information about one of our favorite movies growing up, (although we knew it as “Spaceship”).  And then I found your site and “Ask Bruce” link, so I don’t really have a question, but a from-the-heart compliment:

Growing up in Nebraska in the 80’s, our parents always had dubious skills on filtering the movies we’d select from “The Video Station” rental place, and once every few months we’d pick up “Spaceship”, and laugh all weekend long.  Hearing three boys (age 4, 8, and 10) walking around saying things like “Science is my pie, Curiosity is my sweet tooth…”, naming things “The Stark <whatever>”, to “Gimme some leeway…”, and obviously the musical number, I’m sure our teachers just shook their heads.

To this day we’ll sometimes pop it in, but there’s a place in our hearts for all of it, so I wanted to say thank you!  It has brought us a lot of joy and laughter over the years.

Thank you for all of the condo vibes.  Unfortunately, even if they agree to lower the price, they certainly won’t continue to pay for the closing costs.  So, basically the deal is doomed.  I just can’t afford to pay the down payment and the closing costs up front.

Jeanne, the Seller can file an appeal of the appraisal, that is the other option available to him.  I would certainly think he would want to appeal an $18,000 difference.  So, we shall see what he decides to do — hopefully by tomorrow.

Did I mention I bought a BK new CD today, and bought the book that yielded Skip's 5-star comment.

Because your birthday is the day before my mother’s birthday.  Only she was older than you.

I saw Sierra Boggess in PHANTOM OF THE OPERA in Las Vegas.  I wonder who that guy was that played opposite her?
