Title: BROKEN RECORDS
Post by: bk on February 27, 2005, 11:58:54 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you are now wading your way through nine hundred plus postings, and when you are caught up (like Ann) then it will be time for you to post until the cows come home from breaking their own records.

And the word of the day is: LUGUBRIOUS!

And lest you think I've forgotten: I've put all the suggested titles for this past Saturday's notes into our Electronic Hat and said Electronic Hat has chosen a winner.  That winner is dear reader Laura.  Her title:  Isocrates' Ideas About Arete in Rhetoric.  That is a fine title.  I thank everyone for their excellent titles, but our Electronic Hat has spoken and dear reader Laura shall receive a sparkling prize if she sends me her address.

I found the Oscar show last night rather LUGUBRIOUS.

I really can't think of a dessert I've ever had that was to die for...I'm happy with a good piece of coconut cream pie slathered in whipped cream (as opposed to meringue) from the House of Pies.  After that, a good chocolate eclair makes me very happy.  I will rack my brain overnight, but I don't really remember a dessert I've never forgotten...or I would remember it, wouldn't I?

I hate to do it, but (bills be damned) I'm going to bed, also.

It was a momentous moment (a Jekyll & Hyde reference), but one that at least for me, must come to an end.  Good night, all!

I am up a little earlier this morning.

But I stand corrected about the original book cover for Diary of a Mad Playwright. The picture of James Kirkwood in a straightjacket is actually a photo near the end of the book. I love this book and go back and reread it every now and then.

Some other dishy backstage books the Making of No No Nanette. The second best backstage book.

There is the Whorehouse Papers about The Best Little Whorehouse by Larry L King one of the writers. He has a rather crude write style that detracts from making the book a complete pleasure to read.

There is also The Making of Fiddler on the Roof. Not as dishy as the first two books, but some how I had the feeling it was a publicity book to coincide with the release of the movie as they talk a lot about the film.

Also DR S Woody wrote earlier this morning:

And now for something completely different...

While at the grocery store, der Brucer and I were greeted by Rob, who used to be the manager of Cafe Zeus here in RB.  Rob has been away for about eight weeks, attending (get this) Butler school somewhere in Colorado.

It turns out that he not only topped his class, but he topped every class the school has had since it opened nearly thirty years ago!

Well it is too early to be up, but all I could think that this man is a slut.

Congratulations to all at HHW and MR BK on yesterday's accomplishment.  And thanks to DR RODZINSKI for the compliment.

I am not dismissing Jamie Foxx as a lightweight, DR CP - I think he is a boor. Hopefully he will use his Oscar win to get good parts, those that are available.  He is a better actor than Will Smith - so maybe....I wish him all the best, not that that matters.

I LOVE THE IRON GIANT!!!

Dessert.  Hmmmmmm....not much for fancy desserts.  I think a nice piece of cake with ice cream is THE MOST, man!

Good morning, all!  I ate too much party food last night at the party and the indigestion gave me a dreadful night of sleep.  Today I wade through "The Small House of Uncle Thomas," talk about music theory in "Shall We Dance?," and close the books on THE KING & I.

The most intricate dessert I ever made was in graduate school, a baked Alaska, which turned out so magnificently that it became a staple at several cast parties: devil's food cake, vanilla ice cream, and I flavored the meringue with almond and sometimes kirsch.

I, too, found last night's presentation LUGUBRIOUS!

I did, though, go through every single post from yesterday. I picked up at page 6 which is the last post I made and I just finished reading the 900plus posts now.

I'll have to think about desserts.

I'm seeing Spamalot tomorrow and All Shook Up on Wednesday. From movies to theatre. The world goes on.

I must get back to work since I spent so much time reading yesterday's posts.

Later.

Good morning, all.

I agree that the awards show, itself, was no great shakes. But I found myself smiling and so happy during most of it. I admired the beautiful clothes, and Clint looked so great. I knew there would be some flack of some sort when Chris Rock dissed Jude Law... and here came The Enforcer, himself, in Sean Penn... Could have done without the "Bash the Prez for the Lefties" stuff, when there is so much more to talk about at a WAAAYYYY expensive celebration of ART. But I watched every moment, trying soemtimes not to smile and crease the rapidly-creasing face... my foodstuffs for the evening were cucumbers, tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, low fat dressing...

Hey!! Go to theatremania.com and click on Peter Filichia's column!!! I woke up at 5:30 this morning to check it out! Huzzah!

My comments about Jamie Foxx were comparing what talent he portrayed a few years ago (limited). RAY clearly offered him something more substantial to play. Future roles will let us see if it was a fluke or the sign of things to come.

Certainly not many people watching Sally Field in GIDGET could have ever believed she would develop into a wonderful dramatic actress, but she did.

I guess it could also happen to Foxx. I wish him the best.

Funny thing about IT HAPPENED TO JANE. It came out in 1959 and was a total bust at the box-office. After a run of less than huge grossers, folks were thinking Doris Day's career might be on the wane. Later in the year, PILLOW TALK came out, and it was such a smash that it catapulted Doris to the #4 position on the Quigley Top Box Office Stars list.

Since I got all the major predictions correct in my local newspaper's Oscar contest, I'll find out in a day or two if I win the movie passes. When there's a group of people who get them all right, they put the entries in a hat and draw. Last year, with 100%, I did win third place in the drawing - 12 movie passes. I suspect my luck won't hold out for a second year.

The mice... yes, the mice... Rats and mice and fish... mice at (G)LOOM, mice at my little cabin in the woods... which have now and forever been attended to by various and sundried feral cats... ah, if life were always this easy!!!

Thanks for posting the url for me, Jennifer. Oh, that Penny can sing, all right, but she still thinks a computer is a typewriter that receives mail... Techno-challenged? Moi?

Off I leap into my day, having put my slide cues in order. Anyone here in NYC who might have one of those Kodak slide carousels?? I brought the show carousel with me, and only this morning discovered that the little round doohicky that locks the slides in place is MISSING... last time I had it was at Bristol Riverside Theatre a year ago... oy...

AND - I need a few set pieces... can someone loan me a hat rack, a small dressing table (with or without a mirror attached), some sort of mid-sized desk (or table that could be tricked out to look like one...) sturdy enough for my svelte self to stand on? Just need them for 2 weeks... I'm gonna hit the thrift shops this week...

Wow, 31 pages to catch up on!  You guys went crazy last night.

I have a few comments about the Oscars the day after:

Someone mentioned wanting subtitles for Beyonce's french song.  Well I don't think that would have helped.  I speak french and she was mispronouncing almost every word.  I do like Beyonce.  But I was not happy with what she did last night.  Especially the french song.

I was also not sure what I would think of having the nominees for some categories on stage.  I guess it was okay (well better than I thought it would be - although that doesn't say much).  I would be interested to know what the nominees thought.  Did it make them happy to get the recognition by being on stage.  Or were they just embarrassed to do it.

It did save time.  And I thought it was preferable to doing the categories in the aisles.  That as just weird.  I love seeing the glamorous people up on stage.  And having them do it from the aisles was just not the same.  I would have actually preferred the presenter to be on stage and then have them accept the award in the aisle.  But I hated how they did that.

As for the gowns, I am extremely picky.  The ones that I think will be on the best dressed list today (not necessarily the ones i loved): Halle berry, Cate Blanchett, Charlize Theron, Renee Zellweger, Hilary Swank, Kate winslet.

Of those the only ones i really liked were: Charlize and Kate Winslet.

I think the most popular "outfit" for men would be Salma Hayek's "accessories" that were spilling out of her dress. :)

Desserts!  In suburban Cincinnati there's a restaurant called the Grand Finale that serves lunch, dinner, a lovely Sunday brunch, but specializes in desserts.  The one I'd love to be able to order (but they took it off the menu years ago :'() is Banana Walnut Torte:  3 or 4 layers of delicious cake glued together with cream cheese filling.  Take a look at what they DO still offer at:
www.grandfinale.info/dessert.htm (http://www.grandfinale.info/dessert.htm).

Of course, Cincinnati (and now Dayton, Columbus, and other cities) always has Graeter's ice cream, which will more than do  ;)

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

Well, I didn't exactly wake up early as planned... Actually, I did wake up early, but I didn't get out of bed until later...  Semantics, eh...  I guess last night's HHW Oscar Party tuckered me out more than I thought.  And it was wonderful heading to bed with the strains of UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG fresh in my head - Thanks for the "hint" DR Ann.

So, in a little while, I'll begin pulling out my bags and luggage and start packing them.  Then unpacking them.  Then packing them again.  I am really going to try just to pack the essentials.  And if I find myself short on clothes while on the road, there's always Old Navy.  ;)

I head to Greensboro on Wednesday, and I'll heading back on Sunday - so I can make a stop here for a few hours before heading up to DC.  -Then I'll be training up to NYC on Monday.  I'll pack a small bag for this week in Greensboro, and my big luggage for NYC, Memphis and Indy.  And I'll pick up the big piece of luggage on the return trip from Greensboro.  *I also have to be very careful that I don't over-pack my big bag so I don't get charged for it being too heavy when I start my planes flights.  -And to make it easier for me to drag from the train through Penn Station and up to 34th Street!

Hmm... I may need to print out a copy of this post for myself.  ;)

One "nice" thing I realized the other day was that Greensboro is only about a three hour and a half hour trip from here.  I kept thinking it was something more along the lines of five to six hours.  I was thinking Charlotte - the land of DR MattH - which is where I've driven to in North Carolina that past couple of times.  It was nice to realize this since it will give me a few extra hours on Wednesday morning, or at least some extra time to make a BBQ stop in Durham.  -It's all about the food!

And speaking of food...

Favorite dessert hands-down is the Flourless Chocolate Waffle at the Carlyle Grand Cafe in Arlington, VA.  Well, the original version of that dessert which was served with macadamia-brittle ice cream.  A few years ago, they tweaked the recipe and added a few dried cranberries and some walnuts to the waffle batter - to help cut the richness (what?!?!?).  And the waffle is now served with plain ole vanilla ice cream. It's actually very good vanilla ice cream, but I do miss the macadamia-brittle ice cream.

I've had some other wonderful desserts here and there, but that's the one I always remember.  -Even though I know there have been a few more "This is the best dessert I've ever had" moments in the meantime.

Interesting, Entertainment Tonight's Stephen Cojokaru's Best Dressed List:

5.Natalie Portman
4.Halle Berry
3.Cate Blanchett
2.Oprah
1.tie

Apparently he had a tie for first place which they will announce on tonight's show.  My guesses:  Charlize Theron will be one.

Best dessert I've ever made is apparently the German Chocolate Cake I made a few times during the run of Hallelujah, Baby!.  They were special orders.  But I have yet to try it myself?!?!?!  But I had some very "thankful" reactions from the recipients.

Otherwise, I make a pretty good tiramisu.

And my first attempt at a Fresh Coconut Cake for Steve - it's his favorite - also came out splendidly.

JRand54, why do you think Jamie Foxx is a boor? On any of these awards shows and on Barbara Wa-wa last night,  I have found him to be gracious, touching, and sincere.

MattH, I remember Jamie Foxx from his IN LIVING COLOR days, but once I saw his stand-up and started seeing him in films I realize he was a real smart actor with a wider range than one would have thought from just IN LIVING COLOR

Chris Rock is very funny.  I think the Academy Awards was a venue that straight-jacketted him.  I found some of his jokes amusing but I don't think they were playing to the room.  Hollywood can be very stuffy and prosaic when it comes to poking fun at itself.  Rock also needs time to get rolling.  It wasn't going happen in ten minutes.  Re:  Mr. Jude Law.  I  agree with Mr. Penn, he is a fine, fine actor.  I've seen him in plenty of films and also on stage.  But I also agree with Mr. Rock, he is NOT a star.  He really hasn't carried a film that's been a major hit yet.

Chris Rock could have used an acting coach; he was yelling too much of the time, when he didn't need to.  Louder is not always better.

He would have been better served with better writers, as well.  Bruce Vilanch's name was noticably missing in the end credits.

hello all ...

.. the word "dessert" certainly grabs my attention (i think i must be the original sweet tooth!) ..

whilst not a dessert as such, i must mention some years ago when i was working for Polygon Theatre Company, we sold "POLYCHOCS!" .. these were created by a member of the company ..

.. they were fresh lychees, filled with fresh ginger and then dipped in chocolate ..

absolutely delicious!!!!  hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Oops, forgot about the dessert topic. I can't really remember any exquisite dessert. I've had many, but none that was so scrumptuous that I've never forgotten it. Having such a major sweet tooth, I eat LOTS of desserts.

My favorite dessert to make is peanut butter cake. Topped with chocolate icing, it is JUST like eating a Reece's peanut butter cup in cake form. I've gotten more compliments on it than on any other dessert I've prepared.

Back to winter this week here. They had predicted a chance of snow last night, but I guess it didn't get quite cold enough and we only got rain. Temp right now at 4 p.m. is 39 - quite a change for the 70 we had last week. Not supposed to get out of the 40s all week. I guess winter is going to take one last grasp of us.

It consisted of a very tall parfait glass of chocolate, vanilla, and toffee ice cream, interspersed with layers of fresh custard, whipped cream, cake, and raspberry and mango coulis ( a lovely fruit sauce ). When I reached for my wallet to pay, I realized that I had been the victim of pickpockets earlier that evening-my wallet was gone, and I knew just how they had stolen it.

But--that dessert was SO good--that I continued to lap it up even AFTER I discovered the theft of my wallet, which amazes me to this day.

I just looked it up on the internet, and it's still there-it is now called "Atelier Renault" and the menu is online.

Here is the link to Peter Filichia's TheaterMania column featuring PennyO:

http://www.theatermania.com/content/news.cfm/story/5688
I have a problem with Filichia's story.  He does a great job of plugging PennyO's book.  He does NOT do a very good job of plugging her show.  If he/she doesn't know enough to click on the hotlink to the show information (http://www.theatermania.com/content/show.cfm/show/109773), the average reader won't know when the show is being performed or where.

We here at HHW are savvy enough to know about hotlinks, but I've never been too sure of people elsewhere.

Just my "harumph" for the day.

There's something about Elmore's post about Flaherty that's brought something to mind.

If BK and Guy Haines haven't finished choosing the material for the new album, I suggest a pairing: "Catch a Falling Star," the Perry Como classic, and "Kiss the Girl," from The Little Mermaid.  They're similar in melody, and an arranger and orchestrator could have a lot of fun with them.

Raining here too, with possible snow and sleet as the afternoon progresses into evening and the temps start to drop again.  Meanwhile, further north, the students up in the DC metro area had yet another snow day.

I got my bag packed for Greensboro, then I started putting away some stuff that has been sitting on my bedroom floor for who knows how long.  I have "files" of stuff in brown paper grocery bags.  Well, I had files of stuff in brown paper grocery bags.  I sorted through them, put together some storage boxes, and started transferring my "files".  Most of it consisted of yet more xeroxes and music.  It's amazing the stuff one finds when one isn't looking for it.  ;)  -I found music for shows I did seven years ago!  -It's amazing what gets transferred from one file to another over time.  :-\  I also made sure to take out some Post-It Notes, and label all the boxes.

Progress.

I just took a break to eat something.   I just heated up the 1/2 sub I had left from last night.  The other half of the chicken-broccoli roll will be my dinner later.

And soon I should start packing my large luggage.  I'm actually thinking it will be easy.  As long as I pack my pit blacks, that's most of the "daily wear" I will need.  So, I'll throw those in first, and just start adding things on top.

-Yeah, that sounds like a plan.

:)

Laters...

This IS a slow newsday here at haineshisway.com.  Interestingly, several of the errant and truant haven't made their way back to the site.  Harumphhh.

An interesting day, writing-wise.  Very slow-going, but fun.  I woke up without having a clew as to how I was going to wrap up the section I'm in.  It's compicated for a variety and also a hollywood reporter of reasons.  I just stared at the screen this morning, then I did what I always do when I need inspiration - I took a long, hot shower.  And, true to form, it came to me instantly.  The perfect solution to my problem presented itself to me.  It required that I go back and add two things earlier in the section, which I did.  And then I began writing it and it's working really well.  Hoo and ray.

Just watching the news...  A bunch of the school systems up in the DC area are already canceling school for tomorrow.  So now I'm wondering just how much snow they got, and how bad the roads are... and will be tomorrow.

Guess I'll just have to wake up and check the news tomorrow morning.  I really do want to get up to Fairfax tomorrow if I can, and if it won't be a travel nightmare.

Michael Shayne-- I really enjoyed "Legends" when I saw it.  It wasn't great, but I liked it for what it was.  I had hoped the play would catch on and that we'd see lots of wonderful people doing it (a la "Love Letters").  Even Larry Hagman talked of doing a version with two men (being bitchy).  The new production being bandied about with Joan Collins and Linda Evans could be interesting.  Will Nolan Miller be doing the gowns, I wonder?

Since I got all the major predictions correct in my local newspaper's Oscar contest, I'll find out in a day or two if I win the movie passes. When there's a group of people who get them all right, they put the entries in a hat and draw. Last year, with 100%, I did win third place in the drawing - 12 movie passes. I suspect my luck won't hold out for a second year.

Well, best of luck to you anyway!  I hope you DO win.

whilst not a dessert as such, i must mention some years ago when i was working for Polygon Theatre Company, we sold "POLYCHOCS!" .. these were created by a member of the company ..

.. they were fresh lychees, filled with fresh ginger and then dipped in chocolate ..

absolutely delicious!!!!  hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

DR Elmoore

In the Small House of Uncle Thomas Ballet what percentage of the music would you say was by Trude Riteman?

How much input would you say that Jerome Robbins had in the order of the music of the piece?

DRMichael Shayne, on the orchestra score for the ballet, Russell Bennett has written "Trude Rodgers & Hammerstein" for the composer.  She used two themes of Rodgers' from the show ("A Puzzlement" and "Hello, Young Lovers") and the song the missionary taught Lady Thiang "There is a happy land, far far away."  Outside of a question about the triumphal march at the end and its possible debt to Rimsky-Korsakov or another Russian composer, I would guess 80% of the ballet is Trude's.   Rodgers may have written the "Hail to Buddha" sections, but I don't know.  She also plays with Rodgers' usage of ostinato accompaniments in the sequences where Eliza runs off, hides in the forest and climbs the mountain.

I would never hazard a guess about how much input Robbins had in the shape, since the layout of the piece is clearly Hammerstein's.  Trude's manuscript and the Bennett score have sections that were cut, but I think the cuts were made in tightening the ballet's length.

She's very smart in her use of Rodgers' themes:
"There is a Happy Land" where Eliza wants to go to be with George
"Hello, Young Lovers" is the ice skating duet for Eliza and the Angel
"A Puzzlement" Simon Legree and his dogs sliding across the ice

She clearly links in Tuptim's plot a happy land beyond Siam, Anna as the Angel who will save her (an irony, since Anna can't save her in reality), and the King as Simon Legree.   Whether those suggestions were Rodgers', Robbins', or her own composer's intellect, she made a fabulous piece out of what she was given and her own great talent.

I am stuffed with tuna pasta salad and my leftover cupcake from yesterday.  All quite yummilious, which is more than I can say for this DVD of the stage version of The Young Girls of Rochefort.  There's one very pretty new Legrand song, and several not so good new songs - the old songs, when they haven't been ruined by "hip" beats, are as glorious as ever.  But the choreography is the worst I've ever seen - EVER.  And I've seen some pretty awful choreography in my time.  There is not one step that's interesting - just a lot of jumping and flipping and pointless moving around.  The choreographer is, sadly, also the director.  The show is presented on a HUGE wide stage, and you never know where to look (the horrid editing doesn't help matters).  The young girls are pretty and sing well.  Two of the leading men are bald and look to similar.  The Gene Kelly role is cast with a mid-twenties fey-looking actor.  But the worst are the microphones - these are the Rent-type head mics but taken to the nth degree.  The wrap around the ear, prodtrude all the way in front of the mouth, and on the opposite side of the mic is another wraparound the ear thing with an earpiece in it.  Horrifying.  Looks like something out of Brazil or Twelve Monkeys.

Danise asked:

"Question:  Is it possible to get tickets to Chitty in previews during that weekend?"

Sorry, Danise, the answer is no. The show doesn't start performances until March 27th and it opens April 28th. I'm seeing the show on April 12 from the last row of the balcony. I figure since I saw it from the 4th row of the Palladium Theatre in London in December of 2003, I can spring for a $20 balcony ticket to see it here in New York.

Miss Penny O's show is on something called E-Tix here in New York. I've mentioned TDF before but it's a cheap way to see theatre (I couldn't see half of what I see if it wasn't for E-Tix). If you haven't bought your ticket yet and you are a TDF member you can get a $25 ticket for $16. All dates are available. Check it out TDF members. Go to http://www.tdf.org/ and sign in to look at the available shows. Click on Jewish Thighs on Broadway and go to it.

Thanks, Ben.  I just thought it might be something to see.  I've never seen a show in previews before.  By the time they make it to Tampa they are pretty well set.

I'll look forward to hearing everything you have to say about it when you go.

I already have my ticket for Miss Penny O's show but thanks for the info!

Perhaps they should have cast Beyonce in The Young Girls of Rochefort. She could have sung every song by herself, and in French yet.

Oh, Danise, you're coming from Tampa, Florida? I understand your trepidation about the cold.

It's a good idea to dress in layers in New York-the faster you walk the more you warm up. Also, the stores and subways are sometimes heated way too high, in my opinion anyway.

Oh, and bring boots. And that Macy's credit card! :D

Dress Rehearsal (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0451213998/qid%3D1109643667/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/104-1363129-2088719) by Jennifer O'Connell.  It got a nice review in Booklist and 4 out of 5 stars on amazon.com from readers, but I don't think ANY library would want 832 copies of it.

Thanks, DR Iris.  It's true.  I have never seen snow.  It's cold here in Tampa sometimes but I'm told it's a damp cold where as it's a dry cold up North.

Without having experenced it, I'm having a very hard time understanding what the difference will be like. Cold is cold to me.  How can your 30 degrees be a warmer cold then our 30 degrees or vice versa.

It's one of the reason's I only booked for four days this time. Four days should be enough time to know if I lcan take NYC cold or not.   :)  If not, I shall be a spring/summer vistor from then on.

At work today, I've been ordering books (that's mostly what I do), and in the order screen, we have to put the source of the order...in other words, what the selectors have marked up and given to us to order, be it professional journal, patron request form, amazon.com printout, etc., etc., etc. (a King and I reference!)  Anyway, on this one particular title, I got distracted and instead of putting "4" in the quantity field, I put in the page number of the journal ... 832! :o I didn't realize this until I went to save the order screen and it took several minutes to finish!  FORTUNATELY, the order had not been sent to the vendor.  The computer took just as long to undo it, but I was able to delete the order.   If I hadn't been able to, that would have been a BIG problem...for me! ::) The order would have been over $1000 instead of just $25!
;D ;D ;D LOL, DR George!  As a selector on the "marking up" end of this process (in another library system, of course), I found this story hilarious.  Thank you for sharing it!

If memory serves correctly, lychees are something like grapes....Am I right?  I think I've had them once.

Your way sounds great!

Hello DR Danise.  You are correct.  A similar texture to grapes but a much paler colour.  Sometimes they are referred to as "Chinese Gooseberries".

Do give them a go .. they are lovely on their own, but the ginger and chocolate certainly brings out all the flavour.

Yes things are icy and snowy here as well on this last day of February in Indiana, and elsewhere.

RE: Jamie Foxx - it's just a personal thing.  Just the vibe I get - don't enjoy him or his work.  There are a few performers like that for me.  Everyone else can like them and admire their talent, that's fine.

AMERICAN IDOL: The men had a pretty good night tonight. Well, at least the nerves seemed to be gone with most of them. There are still three of four of the guys who have their high pitched boy band voices that I just don't turn on to.

I also felt there was too much humming along with the music tonight and not enough full out singing. One performer spent the first HALF of his song humming and saying "yeah-yeah" but not doing any real singing. Of course, the judges thought he was wonderful.

I thought Anthony and Bo blew everyone else out of the water tonight. I disliked David and Constantine the most tonight.

Trying to decide on a DVD for tomorrow. It could be MY SISTER EILEEN, or it could be one of the Poirot made-for-BBC movies - perhaps SAD CYPRESS, one of my favorite Agatha Christies. But I'm in the mood for a film as opposed to some TV episodes.

Good Evening!

Packed for Greensboro this weekend - Check!

More "stuff" organized and more "stuff" shredded - Check!  *Three garbage bags full of shreds!!!

Packed for NYC, Memphis and Indy - Almost Check!

I just realized there is only so much I can do right now.  I should be back here by Noon on Sunday, and that will give me a couple more hours to get things in order - and do a load of laundry or two - before driving up to Fairfax Sunday night.  -And then I'm on the 7:30am train Monday morning to NYC!  Wheeeeeee!

However, I have to say I showed quite a bit of restraint when I packed the stuff I did pack already.  I usually overpack.  And I mean OVERPACK!  -To the point where I bring "emergency" pieces of clothing that I end up not wearing the whole time.  There were at least four shirts and two pairs of pants I never wore the whole time I was in LA last summer - and I was there for almost three months!  As long as I have access to a laundromat every 10 days or so, I should be fine.

I'm still planning on heading up to Fairfax tomorrow, weather permitting.  So far, it still looks good, but I'll be checking the reports in the morning on the TV and on the net.

DR ozderek - Those POLYCHOCS sound amazing!  I love lychees.

One of my favorite Filipino desserts is dish filled with lychees and cubes of almond-flavored gelatin.  My mom would make this all the time when I was growing up.  The almond gelatin is of Japanese and/or Chinese origin.  The Japanese call it Do-Fu, I believe.  Maybe DR Hisaka can confirm or correct me.  In any case, the combination works surprisingly well.

Oh, and fresh lychees are so amazing when you can find them.

DR Danise - I've been to NYC in March many times.  I think one coat should be enough.  Unless you plan on spending a lot of time outside walking around, then I don't think you'll need to worry about bundling up that much.

However, I would advise bringing some sort of coat or jacket that is a good "shell".  Usually it's the wind that will get to you rather than the cold temps.

...Of course, I was born in Boston, and I'm still hoping for a good snowfall this winter - three feet minimum!

;D

As for tonight's "American Idol"...

I really would like to hear more of the mix that is heard in the studio.

I thought there was one dead-on song choice, and one totally wrong song choice tonight.  The rest were good, but the singers didn't really do anything special with their renditions of them.

And the back-up singers really got a workout tonight too.  -And actually sounded a little out of tune in a few places to my ears.

We shall discuss more tomorrow.

Another example of the Fall of Western Civilization.  Today I was listening to a mellifluous-voiced announcer doing a commercial for the Mexican silver industry, saying it gives employment to craftsmen, designers, and "ar-tish-ans". I'm sure he meant artisans.

I mean this was going out over the airwaves for public consumption.  Is there no quality control?  Don't the people paying for the ad even bother to check it?

Good Evening!  Good Morning!

Laundry is done, and I managed to organize things a bit more in my bedroom.  Hopefully, all this prep work will make packing everything up much easier once I'm back from Indianapolis.  I'll have three full weeks to get things packeds up and moved into storage and/or up to NYC and/or...

While waiting for some laundry to finish drying, I decided to go ahead and burn a couple of CDs onto my harddrive.  It was my first time using the iTunes feature.  Very cool.  I didn't realize just how compact the format was for the music files.  So, one of the things I'll be doing over the next couple of day - even while I'm in Greensboro - is burning even more CDs to my harddrive.  This way I can travel with part of my CD library - and without the bulk of the actual CDs.

:)

The following was in ad for a local church:

"Go Braless -
