Title: MAN ON A MISSION
Post by: bk on March 03, 2005, 12:00:00 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you were on a mission reading the notes, the notes were on a mission reading you, and now it is time to post until the cows on a mission come home.

Fav religious films:  I'm fond of the Jeffrey Hunter Christ film (King of Kings?) with our old friend Frank (Danssssalome!) Thring because it tries to put a somewhat logical secular/historical spin on that whole section of the new testament.

Could Whistle Down the Wind be considered a religious film.  I like that one.

One Foot In Heaven...starring Fredric March as a minister is awfully nice.

I, too, like King of Kings, one of the best - great score by Rozsa and a lovely performance by Mr. Hunter.  Ditto Whistle Down the Wind.

I also enjoy Ben-Hur every five years.  The Ten Commandments always makes me laugh uncontrollably.  And I'm fond of certain sequences in The Greatest Story Ever Told.  I also enjoy The Song of Bernadette.

And The Bishop's Wife.

Well, I've never been a religious person (not even spiritual), so religious films never appealed to me.  I did like the animated musicals "Prince of Egypt," with songs by Stephen Schwartz and (direct to video) "Joseph:  King of Dreams" that has some very nice songs by John Bucchino.  I love the song "Better Than I."  Anyway, that's about as religious as I get. ::)

Post by: bk on March 03, 2005, 12:28:43 AM
You certainly don't have to be a religious person to enjoy a well-made film like King of Kings or The Song of Bernadette.

My favorite film featuring nuns (who are religious, after all) is the divoon and brilliant Black Narcissus.

Well, if no one wants to play perhaps I'll just toddle off to the bedroom environment.

And before I go, let me just say - CREPUSCULAR!

Favorite lines from religious movies:

"So it is written, so it shall be done."

"Moses, Moses, Moses."

"Dansssssssssse Salome"

I didn't think of that!  I love "The Sound of Music."  And now that it's been mentioned, I remember that I have seen (and thoroughly enjoyed) "The Trouble with Angels."  So, I'll put those on my list. ;D

You'd think that I would've seen more religious films...my aunt (my dad's sister) is a nun!  Sister Cecelia. :D

THE TROUBLE WITH ANGELS and its sequel WHERE ANGELS GO TROUBLE FOLLOWS - buts especially the first with Miss Hayley Mills.

I really like THE CARDINAL and also THE MIRACLE with Miss Carroll Baker as a nun who decides to go in a WAY different direction.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS and EL CID are also a couple of the "epics" I like!

DR KERRY also sent me a lovely care package of magazines and publications.  I was finally able to see a photograph of the gold sequin pants suit that Carroll Baker wore to the 1965 Golden Globe ceremonies and scandalized the jaybirds!

DR KERRY - MBARNUM (who will indeed inherit my Allison Hayes collection) mentioned some Bollywood movies, and I would like to add my favorite, a soap opera tear jerker called PAKEEZAH.  Do a quick search on Google and read about it....it has my favorite Bollywood song and dance Chalte, Chalte!

I didn't get to answer yesterday's question from DRRODZINKSKI about my weirdest posession, but I guess it would have to be the Little Brown Jug of White LIghtnin' empty jug that Frances Farmer purchased in Nashville, Indiana, then took to her sister Edith's house for Christmas in 1962.  They finished up the likker, then Edith used it as a candle holder.  She gave it to me many years ago, when I wrote to her about Frances.

*Before The Rain by Milcho Manchevski ; I'm not sure if it could be counted a religious film...

Good morning, al!  I, too, overlooked DRRodzinski's inquiry, and I'm not sure I can think of anything remotely bizarre I've collected.  My prize possession is an original George Gershwin drawing, which was a gift from Leonore Gershwin in 1989 or so.  I have a great collection of  scores to musicals, opera, operetta, and ballet, but doesn't everyone?  All right, I am collecting BABES IN TOYLAND memorabilia, 1903-present, mostly pertaining to the original production, 1st and 2nd class tours, and German production, but it's got a purpose beyond my neuroses (I hope!).

DRs Woody and Der Brucer, I love William Benedick Shakespaw!  He's adorable.

Religious films:
KING OF KINGS (Jeffrey Hunter)
SONG OF BERNADETTE
BEN-HUR  (both silent and remake)
JESUS OF MONTREAL
JESUS OF NAZARETH (Zefferelli)
THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST MATTHEW (Pasolini)
E.T.  (lot of religious allegory here)
THE ROBE
I don't know where to put the great MIRACLE AT MORGAN'S CREEK!

Bad religious films:
THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD (all-star miracles!)
GODSPELL (love the musical, the film eludes me)

Good morning, DRHisaka!

DR Hisaka

I have runa cross a Japanese show that is shown here with subtitle sometimes on late night TV.  It is about a young American woman of Japanese descent, who is stayingin Japan while attending school.  She seems to be living witha family that includes a young male school teacher and a boy about 12 years old, a couple that just had a new baby.  I was wondering if you had ever heard of it and if you could give me some background (I don't know the name of the show as they didn't out up English subtitel for that!)  It was a very intresting family drama and I would be intrested in seeing more of it.  Thanks!

Last night's American Idol was a stark contrast to last week's show.

I was not too surprised with the eliminated.  For the women I figured it was between Celena, Aloha and Janey.  The first two went, and i'm quite certain the latter will go next week.

For the men, I thought it was between David, joseph and travis. And again the first two were eliminated.  And the latter will probably go next week.

The finalists will probably be: anwar, mario, bo, constantine, and anthony (that leaves nikko and travis and scott).  I assume scott will round out the finalists, but perhaps it could be nikko.

And for the women: Carrie, Nadia, mikayla, jessica, and amanda should make it through(that leaves lindsey, janey, vonzell).  Janey is for sure gone.  I really like lindsey, so hope she stays.

SONG OF BERNADETTE
10 COMMANDMENTS (both silent and sound versions)
KING OF KINGS (silent version)
WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND

I know there are others...I have seen some wonderful Bollywood religious pictures as well.

So sorry to hear about the loss of the puppy, DRs SWoody and DerBrucer. I know from my fostering days that sometimes the little ones just don't make it and we may never know why. You just have to remember that the successes outnumber the non-successes. And that's why you keep plugging on.

THE NUN'S STORY is my second favorite movie of all-time, so of course it has to lead this list.

I also like the Jeffrey Hunter KING OF KINGS and have great respect for THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST without actually loving it.

I fell asleep twice during THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD and don't think I've ever made it through the whole thing awake. It must be among the most boring movies ever made.

Best religious tearjerker for me is THE BELLS OF ST. MARY'S.

Paula's outraged reaction of Aloha's ouster was pretty ridiculous. As Simon said, there was no way she was going to win, and although she's far better singer than Jenay, does it REALLY mater who goes this week and who goes next week?

I liked Joseph a lot, but I knew he'd never win, so it didn't really matter to me when he left. I'm really expecting one of the guys to win the whole thing this year, and at this point I think it may be either Bo, Anthony, or Anwar.

Hurley's back story on LOST last night was fascinating and adds another layer of mystery now with the puzzle of the jinx numbers. What an amazing show.

ALIAS made me a little irritated last night what with the easy escape for Sark and Sydney/Vaughn's slow decision to explode him. Also read a little spoiler on the TV GUIDE website about the ALIAS season finale

Irina Derevko will make an appearance at the end of the season whether it's played by Lena Olin or not.

DRs SWW & DerB, I am sorry to hear about Bruno.. at least he was in  a better place before he went to a better place...how are the other puppies and Mom dealing with it? (and how are you  two?)
DR Vixmom: Baxter and Benedick just came back from a walk with Momma Peggy and der Brucer.  Baxter still isn't eating like we'd like him to, but is showing considerable energy; he and Benedick were playing tug-of-war with an old toy that they found.

Momma Peggy is definately missing poor Bruno, and is very attentive to the two puppies she does have.

Der Brucer and I were shook by losing Bruno, of course.  Even being with him for just a day, we'd developed an attachment to the little fellow.  That is, of course, part of fostering; if we didn't love dogs, we wouldn't be doing it.  We'll be taking the trio to a vet later today, to see what can be done about the mange problems and any other health issues.

Dear DR Hisaka: We know nothing about the pups' father.  Peggy and her pups were found as strays by the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, abandoned and alone.

Thanks to all for your continued best wishes.  And thank-you, DR DearReaderLaura, for your support with your past experiences.

The website for the audio collection is http://collectbritain.co.uk/ I think it sounds like it might be handy if someone was working on mastering an accent for a role. It's also fun because the recordings are often stories of people from their childhood and such.

There have been many wonderful religious-themed films made, and I concur with all the above, but some havent been named (or I missed them):

"Fiddler on the Roof" -- has quite a bit to do with religion as a way of life for an entire people.

"Field of Dreams" -- "Is this heaven?"  "No.  It's Iowa." "I could have sworn it was heaven."  "Maybe it is."

"Stairway to Heaven" (aka "A Matter of Life and Death") -- FAB-ulous allegorical film with David Niven and Teresa Wright.

"Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison"

In the "they never learn" department...

We're just back from another loose dog chase.  The wind blew the front door open...again.  Marty, Mikey, Buster, Bonnie and Fletcher all went tearing down the hill...again.  Der Brucer hopped in the car, while I found my shoes...again.  All five were already in the car by the time I made it down the hill, chasing after everyone.

Again.

This makes two days in a row that der B hasn't made sure the front door was closed.  I learned my lesson over a year ago, when the wind blew the door open while der B was back west (that phrase has an odd sound) getting our furniture moved.  I think der B has learned his lesson this time.

Getting back, der B went downstairs and found Baxter nicely hungry and ready for food.

If we can get the pups and Peggy a clean bill of health, maybe we can integrate the family.

Such a person is often misidentified as a body builder because he or she is so heavily crepuscled.

Guess I'm headed to Wal-Mart this afternoon. I didn't pre-order BAMBI thinking most mass market retailers would price it as a sales loss item to get folks into their store. Well, Target certainly didn't (20.77) and Circuit City only had it for 17.99. Best Buy had it for 15.99, but Wal-Mart is closer and theirs was 15.87, so Wal-Mart it will be. Besides, I have some other items I need to pick up, and since it's a Super Wal-Mart with food as well as other items, it's one stop shopping!

In good weather, I like to sit on my balcony with a nice glass of wine and some good music and watch the CREPUSCULAR glow descend into the canyon.

elmore, yes, The Robe.  Jay Robinson chewing scenery with wild abandon and Richard Burton going around saying, "Were you out there?"

I believe there is a line in the voice-over of Ten Commmandments where Cecil B. DeMille intones:  "And Moses entered Pharoah's palace with the Rod of God in his hand."  Later, I swear as they're crossing the Red Sea, Moses stands upon a rock and gestures toward the path in the sea and says:  "This way." Like they have a choice.  And, of course, there is Billy Crystal's favourite line of Eddie G. Robinson:  "Yeah, where's your Moses now?"

I've always been fond of Barabas, simply for Jack Palance's over-the-top portrayal of Super-gladiator in it.

And speaking of over-the-top Jack Palance performances is there anymore hysterical religious film than THE SILVER CHALICE?  The one Paul Newman used to take out full-page ads for in Variety to apologize for.

Well, I just canceled my order since they hadn't even shipped it yet....also cancelled my ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE that I had pre-ordered on the same order for $17.99, as Best Buy has it for $11.95. This movie is such a dog it's fascinating.  The sets and music are totally spectacular...it's all so horribly wrong, yet any time it's ever played on TV I couldn't tear myself away from it!

(I'm certain Virginia Mayo's indescribable eyebrows have a little something to do with the overall effect).  (And Jack Palance in a dress!)

Ron, I agree as terrible as THE SILVER CHALICE is, it is compulsively watchable.  The bizarrest set design in the history of movies ...and Virginia and Jack are the centerpiece of histrionic thespian antics.  And there is, of course, the stentorian presence of Lorne Greene as the Big Fisherman.

There is a line in "Demetrius and the Gladiators" that always struck me funny (funny-odd, funny-amazing, funny-anything-but-ha-ha).

At some point in the proceedings, Claudius is discussing Christians with someone...and someone makes a comment about how Christians thrown to the lions simply stand there and sing praises to their god (or something equally astounding).

And Claudius says, "What people won't do in the name of religion."

Ain't it da trut'!

DR Vixmom: Baxter and Benedick just came back from a walk with Momma Peggy and der Brucer.  Baxter still isn't eating like we'd like him to, but is showing considerable energy; he and Benedick were playing tug-of-war with an old toy that they found.

Baxter was still a pokey puppy, but he walked 5 of the six blocks before I picked him and carried him home.

At leat I got Baxter to try some food - first lick off of the spoon, then eat some from my hand (yuk!), they he put his nose in the bowl and ate a bit.

Here is the Tug of War:

Bruno learned his lesson, and went to hide with the other new toy:

Ron, I agree as terrible as THE SILVER CHALICE is, it is compulsively watchable.  The bizarrest set design in the history of movies ...and Virginia and Jack are the centerpiece of histrionic thespian antics.

Although my memory dims in my carpuscular years, I rememeber a religious film three years before "The Silver Chalice" which set the standard for edible, and thoroughly eaten, scenery; "Quo Vadis"!

I'll admit that I actually had a kinder view towards the teachings of my youth after seeing, "Jesus Christ Superstar," "Godspell" and "The Last Temptation of Christ"-- especially the latter.

As for funny movies, I thought "The Greatest Story Ever Told" and "Ten Commandments" were a hoot.

There has already been mentioned three of Lloyd Douglas' books on film:

"The Robe", "Demetrious and the Gladiators" and "The Big Fishermen". But there is the one that started it all "Magnificent Obsession". The 1954 re-hash of the 1935 original is my favorite "Republican Family Values" film - Ronald Regan's cast off first wife opposite a closted gay romantic lead.

For a more upbeat view of religion we have "Elmer Gantry" and "The Exorcist".

And to join "THe Bells of St. Mary" let's add "It's a Wonderful Life".

DR Kerry,
I have a small list of Bollywood for beginners for you: For modern movies:

DHADKAN (2000). Lots of soap opera histrionics as a gal, to please her parents, marries a man she doesn't love, leaving the man she does love not too happy! Stars Bollywood hunks Sunil Shetty and Akshay Kumar.

PAAP (2003) John Abraham (sigh) as a police detective protecting a young kid from killers...John takes his shirt off a LOT!

LAKEER (2004) John Abraham again. Love story/action film...movie is typical modern Bollywood...nothing special, but John is great...also has Sunil Shetty and some of the best musical numbers IMHO of any of the modern Bollywoods.

For vintage Bollywood...well, again it just depends on your choice of genres...there are some good scary ghost movies or some fun 007 type spy/action films, or weepy soap operas...I have suggestions for each type of genre DR Kerry, so just let me know your preferences.

DR vixmom - How could I forget Luther?  We saw it in the theatre when it was released, because right at the same time DH Richard was portraying Luther in a church musical for which I was stage director (I also played Catherine Winkworth).  Our son Rob liked the movie so much, he asked for the DVD for Christmas.  And I'm a great fan of Alfred Molina...

Nashville, TN.
Atlanta, Georgia.
Memphis, TN.

Oh, SAD CYPRESS is one of the moodier Christie mysteries, but the BBC did their usual good job. I hadn't read the book in decades and didn't really remember what it was about, but once presented with the murder in this film version, I had NO trouble solving it. But I can't take credit since I HAD read the novel a long time ago. I think maybe I've read and seen so much Agatha Christie that I can spot most of her puzzles and their solutions now.

Speaking of "dishes," anybody remember when you would get dishes when you bought gas?

I have books that showed theater marquees advertising that someone would "win" a set of dishes at various showings of some film.

And then there were S&H Green Stamps...which I pasted into books for my mother during my formative years.

The building still stands in Greenville SC where you would take your green stamp books and exchange them for merchandise.

...I have yet to read today's Posts.

However, I did play for about 250 auditions today.  Whew!  And since I have yet to have a proper meal today - I don't like eating too much when I'm sitting down all day - it's now time for me to find said dinner...

And then I shall return and do the things I have yet to do.

Does Memphis work?  Could one get to Texas in an hour or so?  I don't want to use Louisiana.  I like the sound of Memphis.  I'll go find out the name of the town in Texas.

There's no easy answer without more information.

You want to find a city that is about an hour away from Texas?

Texas is HUGE.  Where in Texas?

You could fly to Texas in an hour from Albuquerque.  You could fly to Texas in an hour from Tulsa.  You could fly to Texas in an hour from Tallahassee.

I know you could fly to some point in east Texas from, say, Atlanta in about an hour.

Or, have I missed something about your intent?

Evening all.  Sorry to have been E & T.  I had to work overtime and just ran out of time to post.

DR Jose, I think I will bring the two coats in case one gets wet—I will need a back up.

You wouldn’t BELIVE how cold it is here in Florida now.  It’s 44 degrees F as I type this and it’s raining as well.  That will make it even colder come morning.  Burrr but it is good NYC training.

Thank you for all of the theater/show information.  I really want to see “Fiddler on the Roof”—more for Harvey than anything else.  I think that man has one of the neatest voices I’ve ever heard.

My most sincere condolences to you, DR Joey, on the lost of your Grandmother.  Be happy for the time you had with her.  I only knew my Grandmother on my Dad’s side for a short while.  She passed away when I was six or seven.  I honestly can’t remember.  I just know I remember I was told to pray for her so I prayed the best prayer I could think of—that she had a swimming pool in Heaven.  To be honest, I guess it was because I wanted a swimming pool.

I never met my other Grandparents.  Worse, for my Mother, her Mom passed when she was a baby and her Father when she was but six so she was an orphan.  Tossed from home to home until she got old enough to be “useful” as a free maid service.  Then the family fought over who would “keep” her.

Dear Uncle and SWW, I am also very sad to read about the puppy.  A short life but at least in a loving home.

I like almost every one of the religious movies you already mentioned.  Bells of Saint Mary’s[/l], The Robe. A Nun’s Story to name but a few.  Did you know that for a time I wanted to BE a nun?  It was the outfit, I think.  I didn’t fully understand what being a Nun meant.  ;)

More often glasses than dishes.  We had a collection of coke glasses thanks to the local gas station.

We also had Blue Chip Stamps.  My mother also gave me the unpleasant job of pasting the stamps in the books.  Once I moved out on my own she was very generous with the stamps and I purchased a number of necessary items, such as my ironing board I had for 37 years.  They don’t make them like that any more.  She actually insisted I get the ironing board and iron because she couldn’t stand to see me in my wrinkled clothes. ;D

We had Green Stamps and Top Value Stamps (which were yellow).  I remember helping my Mom paste them into the books.

I don't remember what we got with them.

Well, I looked up the composer and found he has a web page. I sent him any e-mail and he answered me!  Cool, huh?

I am going to get the score from him but as you all know, I don't read music.  At least I'll finely know the words to the song.  I never could catch what they were exactly but I liked the music.

The Panasonic I got was the one without the answering machine.

I don't know what I just did to my finger - I was attempting to peel off one of those security things they put INSIDE DVD cases.  Well, it was like a steel knife went right up my fingernail.  What pain, what blood.  The bleeding actually stopped right away.  I put some Neoporum on it and a Band-Aid.  It's the index finger of my right hand, which makes typing very difficult.  Hopefully, by the time I am ready to write in the morning I'll be able to take the bandgage off.

One reviewer wrote this about "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" :

Please note that although 'Inn of the Sixth Happiness' is a well-produced, heartwarming movie starring the great actress Ingrid Bergman it was a thorn in the side of Gladys Aylward. She was deeply embarrassed by the movie because it was so full of inaccuracies. Hollywood also took great liberties with her infatuation with the Chinese Colonel Linnan, even changing him into an Eurasian. But Gladys, the most chaste of women, was horrified to learn the movie had portrayed her in 'love scenes'. She suffered greatly over what she considered her soiled reputation.

I don't know if that was true, but it's always interesting to read the reviews and see how much people like or hate something and why.  I usually read a couple of reviews on the first screen, then click the "See all customer reviews..." button.  From there, I choose to show them by "Lowest Rated First" just to get a balanced view of something.  Anyone else do this? ::)

The new LAW & ORDER show tonght: TRIAL BY JURY was interesting. I enjoyed seeing the behind-the-scenes machinations on BOTH sides. The prosecution isn't portrayed as lily white, the defense side gave us information that the prosecution wasn't priby to, we got to see grand jury questioning and jury room deliberations. Actually, though several reviewers had said it was the same old LAW & ORDER with a new name, I didn't find it so at all.

Jerry Orbach did look frail. His clothes seemed to hang on him, and the old zip was a trifle forced.

Good Evening!

Had dinner - I ventured up the road a bit since I needed to buy a new pair of jeans at Old Navy.  I ended up buying two pairs since they were offering $5.00 off each pair of jeans if you bought two or more pairs, so I bought two pairs.  Where was I?  Oh, I was in the mood for Mexican food, so I asked the cashier if their was a good Mexican restaurant in the area.  She suggested some place called La Fiesta.  And then two of her co-workers chimed in with, "Oh, yeah...That place is really good!"  So, I headed up the street, and gave it try and it was very good.  I got their tamale/enchilada combo.  Very tasty!  There Mexican food was true Mexican and not Tex-Mex, but there were a bunch of Tex-Mex items available too.  And the chips and salsa were above par too.  I walked out with a very happy stomach.

Once back at the hotel, I popped into the Dance callbacks for a little bit just to check in on things.  Then I had two companies to play callbacks for tonight - Dave Clemmons Casting and Busch Gardens Tampa.

-Then I stopped at the "Dessertery" in the hotel lobby and treated myself to a surprisingly good chocolate eclair.

:)

All in all, a pretty good day of auditions.  The usual mix of the mediocre, good and very good talent.  And even though we were on a tight schedule today, it felt like the day was paced very well and kind of went by fast for me.  *Of course, we'll see how I feel on Saturday afternoon as I'm playing for number 775-850!  ;)

Bruce - OUCH!  On the finger!  I hate when that happens!

As for your Texas question - The closest MAJOR airports to the Gulf Coast of Texas are the ones in Houston - Bush and Hobby.  Or is it Intercontinental and Hobbby?  -I forget which one got renamed.  Bush is a Continental hub, and the other one is a hub for some other airlines, so there's bound to be a bunch of cities two hours from Houston at least.  *San Padre Island is a BIG spring break destination.  Most college kids fly into Houston and then take one of the various charter bus services from there.

Great news about the new Craig Carnelia song!

CREPUSCULAR!

*Which, for some strange reason, I tend to read as CREPSUCULAR when I come across the word.

DR Michael Shayne - ...Well, if you try to book a hotel room in NYC at this time of the year just two weeks before your arrival...  Spring Break!  And TONS of conventions in town too this month.

However...  Be sure to check some of the hotels a few Avenues over from Times Square - the ones on 9th and 10th.  You'd be surprised at some of their "regular" rates.  I still recommend the Skyline at 50th and 10th.  Unfortunately, ever since they finished the remodeling a few years ago, it's no longer that much of a secret, but their rates are still very good - and the rooms are big too.

As for religious movies...

Well, since I spent a good part of my elementary and high school years in private Catholic schools, I saw plenty of religious films.  Consequently, I've kind of blocked a bunch of them from my brain, and/or I can't keep track of which movie starred whom and what it's title was/is.

However, I do remember "A Man For All Seasons".  I went to St. Thomas More Elementary.  We watched that movie at least twice a year in Grades 6-8.  Of course, it wasn't until I was in high school that I realized just how "deep" that movie was - all the social, religious AND historical background.

We had retreats in high school, and we always watched one of the many Jesus films.

...And there was The Ten Commandments - The New Spectacle Musical" last summer at the Kodak Theater starring Val Kilmer...  But that was truly another totally different animal.

I left work with an absolutely splitting headache, got some grocceries, came home and put them away, did the dishes, then took a double dose of Ibuprofen and snoozed on the couch for an hour.  My headache has subsided, but I still don't feel particularly well.

As far as the TOTD...Prince of Eqypt is one of my favorites...can't say I've really seen very many religious movies, though.

So, let me get this straight - not one person, NOT ONE PERSON has made a post since nine-thirty (besides me, of course).  That is most unseemly and I am frankly ready to vomit on the ground at such behavior.
