Well, you've read the notes, the notes had good reportage, and now it is time for you to post until the good cows come home.

Watching the numbers now.  Too Darn Hot - all the kiddies are going BRILLIANT GREAT CHOREOGRAPHY.  Um, no.  It's a bunch of steps, the choreographer has no idea how to build a number, there's no storytelling, and it's truly typical of what passes today for BRILLIANT choreography.  And the never-ending light shifts are so annoying.  But, what do I know.

Hadestown - looks like something I never need to see - pretentious and like something that a college would do.  Sorry, if that's great music and lyrics, you can have 'em.

Beetlejuice - what did they think they were doing?  Most of what this is was designed specifically for the Tonys - not exactly kosher in my book because most of that doesn't happen onstage.  I have never heard more false rhymes in one number - I leave it to others.

And The Prom.  Busy, busy, busy - typical Casey choreography.  Busy, busy, busy.

I think it was once "Spring Awakening" won the Score Tony in 2006-7, even workshop folks gave up on the pure rhyming issue.

Strange choice of number for "The Cher Show" with none of the show's book's context, a bit fanciful, but a well-written  scene between Ms. Block and Emily Skinner as Cher's mom - or what the recording of "Believe" meant to re-catapult Cher's career.

For just matters of accuracy, "The Cher Show" is a musical fable in terms of the accuracy of for example "Gypsy" or "Fiorello" - content-wise, that is.  I went in knowing we never see Chaz beyond age one, never see Elijah Blue (her son with G. Allman), nor Cher's sister who most fans had seen a bit of in that era.

And that it leaves out that before Mike Nichols "discovered" her camera presence for "Silkwood," she'd had. a really nice festival-film success with "... Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean" (a huge flop onstage, but Altman was very proud of the film).

Ain't Too Proud - if I want to hear The Temptations I'll listen to them - I have come to loathe this kind of theater.

There's something that troubles me seeing that it was the music, not people moved to make music together with these specific people.  but the singers were so corporately interchangeable.

One leaves - here's another person.  Like Ms. de La Jolla in petty cash leaves, just hire someone else to do the same thing. (Or like Menudo.)  Not a group of people making music together, but a product where it almost didn't matter who the singers were.

In the previous season, Des McAnuff's "Summer" (Donna Summer bio-show) must ahve gone through some work based on the first night reviews.   McAnuff has an expertise with this type of show - and the opening night reviews from April 2018 had been pretty harsh,, not been quite what I saw.  Major flaws mentioned in the April 2018 reviews just weren't there. I wondered if scenes were just excised

Unfortunately, we had a MAJOR storm in Austin last night.  We were not able to see the opening 10 minutes or so of the show, and the power went off again about 40 minutes in for another 10-15 minutes.

I ended up seeing some of the broadcast, not all of it, but I have the whole thing on my DVR and might skim through it tonight.

Favorite moments? I truly don't know if there are any. Least favorite? The sketches. The songs. The sketches with songs. The sketches in bad taste. The sketches that weren't funny.

Have I mentioned the sketches?

I really hate the direction the Tony Awards are going in programming: too much James Corden, too many sketches, too much silly patter - what was that strange bit with Jake Gyllenhall? - when I want to see the Awards.  They've screwed over the winners for Lighting, Costumes, Orchestrations, Set, etc. for years, but I'd like to see these people and hear what they have to say.

I do want to see Tootsie - primarily for Santino and my friend Chuck Cooper's daughter Lily - and I would not mind seeing Beetlejuice. I'm being taken to a preview of Moulin Rouge at the end of June, and I hope I enjoy it.  It will be good to see a couple of friends in it.

I was happy for Bryan Cranston, but sorry that Paddy Considine lost.  I was, however, not sorry to see Jeff Daniels, one of the most unpleasant people I've ever come across in two encounters, lose, and I'n still puzzled that Adam Guettel was nominated for Best Score for incidental music, which includes Elmer Bernstein's film theme, I believe.

There was a show called "Enron" some time back that had just four songs, but got a Best Score nomination.

I'm being taken to a preview of Moulin Rouge at the end of June, and I hope I enjoy it.  It will be good to see a couple of friends in it.

It was very exciting in Boston, (even though other than the ushers, I was one of three people over 50 in the whole downstairs.). The glamorous couple next to me had bought one of the full champagne bottles, and when we chatted, they were sweet enough to offer me some and very careful not to spill any of it.  (Yes, they had extra cups!!!!) I definitely felt like Grandpa talking to them and also chatting at the stage door.

This was my tribute to the pretty amazing use of the pop songs in the show.   (Satine's first full number was the Katy Perry song "Firework.")

Maybe it's my mood, but last night's Tony broadcast was a big MEH for me.  The shows don't appeal to me and James Cordon is way overdone.  I've loved his Carpool Karaoke segments and I appreciate his love for Broadway, but last night was very disappointing.

Whether you are a fan of Be More Chill or not, and I know little about it beyond the fact that my friend Chase is its choreographer, CBS really screwed the show by telling the producers there was no time for them to do a number, and then using one of its songs with parody lyrics - and giving the show no credit - for the show's needless bathroom sketch so Josh Groban could have a moment.  This is outrageous.

I have begun the takedown of Stella's cage.  The little litter box that once was Thatch's has been cleaned with Pine Sol and now is drying in the bathroom.  Once the cage is broken down, I'll wash the bottom tray and then find a place to keep it.  I really won't need it again, but I don't want to toss it.

The producers of the show are the f---s, along with  their evil lying lawyer Elliot Brown who I call "Nazio Elliot Brown."  They are in goose-step with him.(*)    He is helping my sister-in-law's lawyer in her weird quest to dislodge me as executor over a huge estate that is not her money.

But I'd hope for all the artists to have success.

Did the producers offer to pay the 200,000 for a spot, and they were denied?

(*). they are the springtime for Hitler producers, and law firm.  Hence the metaphor. :).

Joe Iconis seems very happy about it on his twitter.

Of course, when a bit comes off great, that's great, and everyone loves everyone - with those 3 name stars ant the Neil Patrick Harris cameo, this COULD go viral worldwide.  (Or not, based on effort made.)

when number  seems to not come together, it's at times Better if it had never been done, of course.  Was it that bad?  I knew the REAL song too well to ever feel anything but love for the song.

They've had weeks under 450,000.  200,000 would be a large amount to pay when the only nomination was the score.

At what point did the Tonys start charging shows to do a number, which is heinous, IMO.  I'm not sure Alexander Cohen ever charged a show to do a number on the Tonys during his reign.  But that's the point, isn' it - it's become about all the wrong things.

They PAY to perform a number on the show!?!

WOW!

Interestingly, over the years (including last night), there have been few, if any, numbers from new shows (performed on the Tonys) that have made me want to see the show itself.

Back in the day, a Broadway hit would produce 1-2-3 or more songs that became hits outside of the show.

No more.

I too wonder if Be More Chill didn’t want to pay for the segment.

A good friend of Chase's and mine posted this on Facebook:
From what I understand, the Tonys wouldn’t allow Be More Chill to perform “Michael in the Bathroom” (the hit song from Joe Iconis’s nominated score) during the broadcast, saying they didn’t have the airtime for it.

But they DID have the airtime to do a parody of the number, without telling any of the producers or creative team or acknowledging that the song was even from a currently running Broadway show.

As far as I know, it has nothing with the producers not wanting to pay for the time.

The big scandal in Utica NY is the crash and burn of Road To Home Animal Rescue, which was "rescuing" dogs from the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter.  Well, several weeks ago, thanks to a whistle blower, video surfaced of the deplorable situation the asses running Road to Home had made and the huge number of dogs suffering from these idiots' ineptitude and cruelty.

You don't find people getting awards and reacting and the production numbers entertaining enough?  A little bit of James Corden's Watch me watch me! is enough and the show last night had more than enough Corden.  He's a wonderful actor but the Tony Awards are not about him

I also miss when they were on a stage of a regular Broadway theater. Now of course the sales revenue from the upstairs tickets is part of the game.

But is this different than years when the awards were about Rosie, or the years when it was about Hugh Jackman.  The quality is always variable based on who programs what.

Back from our stumble-through.  The sound is still a bit problematic - not in the house, but for the singers and pianist - I'm going to try and get monitors for them, which will be very helpful.  It's hard teaching people how to use a mic, but they're learning.  The stumble-through itself was rough and, of course, we didn't have two performers so four numbers were not performed.  But the structure is fine.

Starring Anthony Hudson – the human vessel for Portland’s premiere drag clown Carla Rossi – LOOKING FOR TIGER LILY utilizes song, dance, drag, and video to put a queer spin on the ancestral tradition of storytelling. Asking what it means for a mixed-race person to experience their heritage through white normative culture, Anthony draws from a songbook stretching across Disney’s “Pocahontas” to Cher’s “Half-Breed,” with musical accompaniment by Maria Choban and dance support by pin-up troupe The Dolly Pops . Anthony recounts his favorite childhood movie – the filmed production of Mary Martin’s “Peter Pan” – while seeking to understand his own racial self-identification and where he as a half-white & half-Indigenous person holds accountability and consequence. Not just autobiography, LOOKING FOR TIGER LILY is a coming-of-age story that's more than just cowboys versus Indians.

Did you have any disasters during the move, any injuries?

No disasters, but a lot of angry family and some friends who were upset that I wasn’t more prepared for the move.
