Title: CRAOD AND MINGOO
Post by: bk on March 03, 2005, 11:58:23 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know what the title of the notes means, you know about the bondage of the bandage, and you are ready to post until the cows come home, which will be as soon as they get out of bondage and bandage.

Brnging up Baby has never been my favourite either.  Can it be  that it is too frenetic and trying too hard?  I kinda like THE AWFUL TRUTH with Cary Grant better.  Of course, that movie also has my favourite actress of all time, Miss Irene Dunne who was adept at so many things...but particularly the screwball comedy.

I certainly find Bringing Up Baby forced - I just shut off after a while.  For me, it has none of the sparkling wit of Preston Sturges' films.  I do try to love it each time I see it, but as I said, I just never get with it.

Well, if no one wants to play, I suppose I shall toddle off to the bedroom environment.

George is still "replying".  I know this is his m.o. but I've forgotten why.  I think he hits reply then goes to the bathroom for twenty minutes.  Am I remembering correctly?  And Ann sits there like so much fish clipping her toenails.

After work yesterday (from which I left late), I got me some dinner to go (from Burger King ... hey, BK!) then got home about five minutes after "Joey" had started.  I'd seen it before, so I didn't mind.  I watched the NBC line-up, including the new "Law and Order" show, which I enjoyed.  I've never seen ANY of the "Law and Order" shows, so I had no idea what to expect.  But I liked it.  I wonder how they'll write his death into the show. [END PART ONE]

PART TWO:

Anyway, during all that, I had to print a whole bunch of copies of a flyer for a friend of mine (it's for her daughter's high school's production of The Sound of Music) and the ink in my printer ran out...but still was printing.  I hate that my printer can't tell when there is no ink.  I have a refill kit that I got at Costco, so I can refill it, but I didn't want to, so I just stopped the print job.  Oh well. ::)

Today (Friday) after work, I'm ushering for "Capitol Steps" that's performing here!  I've only seen them once before, but friends of mine have some of their CDs and they're hilarious!  So tomorrow, it'll be a late night.

Today at noon EST - you can see Miss Frances Farmer and Mr John Garfield in FLOWING GOLD, one of her best performances.  It's a pretty good movie with a fine supporting cast as well.  The usual Warner Bros. suspects.

Right now Miss Ingrid Bergman is getting the Gaslight treatment!

The vet check said the pups were negative for Parvo and their form of mange (http://www.fila.org/peak/mange.htm) is genetic and not contagious (For the purists amongst us they have Demodectic not Sarcoptic mange).

[note to BK - no, I am not writing a novel, I was interrupted by the morning deer parade, they paused next door to have some breakfast).]

Now, as I was saying, the pups are not contagious (with the exception of the kennel cough). The vet said it was best to keep the new dogs "isolated" until their cough went away. Since the disease is airborne, that means moving the dogs to Tahiti to recuperate in an outdoor pen, or build them their separate heated home here. (The vet's advice to the SPCA was for them to keep a lot of windows open to insure good air circulation - nice in the summer, but a difficult measure when the outside temperature stays below freezing for days at a time. Our house is new and very well built - translation: to minimize heating costs the house is virtually hermetically sealed - the doggie door being the only exception - so whatever germs flit about the basement shall soon flit about upstairs.

Since the pups really need to be "socialized", and our tribe is aquiver with curiosity, and I'm tired of putting on a down-jacket to take my crossword puzzles downstairs to sit with the pups, we decided to introduce a pup at a time to the  upstairs tribe and hope we could keep the chaos to a minimum.

Visual BALLYHOO for "The Pups Meet the Barkers" to follow.

DRMichael Shayne, I honestly believe on Monday, when I see the surgeon, he will tell me the surgery needs to be redone and we will choose a date.  Hopefully, it will be the week after Penny's show, since nothing is screwing up that weekend for me!  I want to get it over and know that it's finally healing.

How are all of your pain and health problems coming along?

I'm about to leave for B&N, and I hope it's a good day.  I really would rather stay in bed, but I've felt that at some point about every job I've had!

DR DERBREUCER and SWW - Thanks again for the pup pics and tails - I mean tales.

DR elmore - Good Health Vibes!

DR ANN - Hope you have a better day today too.

OK... I need to hop in the shower - on one foot! - and then head downstairs to the audition room.  -I sort of lazed in bed this morning a little longer than I should have, but I just had my breakfast... But I start my briefing in 30 minutes, so...

A Question to Ponder:

CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/03/03/schuster.column/index.html) CNN has just reported:

Quote
Investigators still don't know who is responsible for the murder of a Chicago judge's husband and mother on Monday, but white supremacist Web sites are applauding the killings.

Extremists on the Internet "are expressing satisfaction that they have been killed
….
A posting on an Aryan Nations message board reads: "If you are doing the bidding of the enemy YOU ARE THE ENEMY!"

Another posting on an extremist message board says: "Well, I for one hope this was the work of some 'lone wolf' targeting those who aid or support or have connections with someone involved in acting against our race, or someone who has acted against those -- like Matt Hale -- who have stood up for our race."

The message concludes, "Let's hope it's only the beginning."

Now it seems to me that by reporting the internet traffic CNN is just compounding the problem - now the hater's have a world-wide audience!

We should not be ballyhooing (if you'll pardon the expression) hate speech.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one not enamored of Bringing Up Baby. It's one of those classics that everyone assumes everyone else likes, but it just seems, as BK said, forced. Oh, well, them's the horse races.

Not listening to anything right now. I have two meetings, one at 10 and the next one at 11. The 10am meeting will probably blend into the 11am meeting since they are related. I needs must get ready for this meeting overload.

This is not The Last Night of Ballyhoo but just an early morning foray into blogging.

I have been watching (Again) a tape the MBARNUM sent me many years ago.

LIFE BEGINS AT 17 is one of those Sam Katzman/Clover Productions for Columbia from the 1950's.  This one has a couple of performances by two of my favorite "Teens"  Mr Mark Damon and Miss Luana Anders, a very interesting production.

BRINGING UP BABY is okay - and I enjoy it, but it certainly does pale next to THE PALM BEACH STORY and others.

Well, I find myself on the other side of the fence as one who absolutely adores BRINGING UP BABY. But you can't debate comedy with anyone. Everyone has a different funny bone and what tickles one doesn't tickle the other.

I have never been a big fan of THE AWFUL TRUTH. It's just OK for me and not a classic comedy. Again, I know I'M in the minority on that one, but that's OK, too.

'morning, Jane - Last night I went to Mary Doria Russell's reading and signing for A Thread of Grace at one of our local bookstores.  She was, as usual, very entertaining.  She announced that her next novel is titled Dreamers of the Day and will be about the 1921(?) peace conference that drew the map of the modern Middle East.  Lawrence of Arabia, Winston Churchill, and Gertrude Bell will all be characters in the book.

Bruce when you add the phones do you know if you can talk on them at the same time.  About a year ago we picked up the same system and had to return it as we couldn’t use two phones at the same time.  We found out the hard way while trying to talk to Bryan.

Happy Birthday to Panni.

DR Jose:  I am glad I could help you smile your way through some of those interminable auditions.

Have given up on AccuRadio.com at the office, and returned to AOLRadio.  Been listening to radio in the car, too.  Not sure what's in the ol' VCR at home.  I am thinking it might be "Wickedly Perfect" from last Saturday, or maybe Tuesday's "Amazing Race."

Bambi is in my DVD player.

Hasn't that poor deer (dear?) suffered enough?  First his mother dies, and now he's trapped in a DVD player.   ::)

I've never much liked Bringing Up Baby either.  I can't tell you where I read it, but years ago at Powell's bookstore here in Portland I found some critical tome on Hawks which proclaimed Come and Get It his best screwball comedy.  I know that seems counter-intuitive (to say the least), but the guy (I think it was a guy) made some very good points, especially about the barroom scene where FF makes her entrance.

Happy Birthday, Panni.  Come back, little Sheba.  ;)

In the mail yesterday:  The Comedy Classics boxed set.

AUGHGHGHGHGH!  I'm inundated with stuff I am beginning to believe I'll never be able to fully enjoy.

Baby needs a change in his life!

And surprise! Surprise!

Can I possibly have won the title card to "There's No Business Like Show Business" in an eBay auction for under $100?  Last few times this card has been offered -- and in lesser condition than the card I won -- it went for more than $200.

Much ballyhoo from me over it!

I'm going to play devil's advocate on the "Bringing Up Baby" issue.  I enjoy it -- and DR Jane, I suspect BK does, too, at some level -- because of its pacing and the antics of its costars.  But...it is a bit too frenetic.  I've always taken it as a put-on...Hepburn's forced laughs...Grant's unbelievable naivete (no man who ever looked that good was ever that naive).

It's the sheer absurdity of the situation -- the spoiled girl with the pet "Baby" that takes a rare dinosaur bone and buries it.  The supporting cast is wonderful, too.

I enjoy watching the film, but when it's over, I'm exhausted.

I listen to Accuradio off and on but mostly off. I have such trouble with it and I have a high speed office connection. I have no trouble with any of the other Internet radio stations, just Accuradio. Oh, well. I have plenty to listen to at work so I can't complain.

Yes, I said that the cast of player in Bringing Up Baby is exemplary.  And I do find some of it amusing.  But the endless falling down of Grant and Hepburn is tiresome and the plotting just makes me antsy, and the dialogue, while fun at times, is not just funny enough.  But, that's just me.

Speaking of me, it's now pouring.

As I understand it, Croad and Mingoo's real problem came from their comedy (which was quite verbal) having originally been written in a Neanderthal dialect.  Needless to say, it lost quite a bit in translation.

All the same, they were very popular with the cognoscente in the "club" circuit.

For all those who were interested, I did go on to the site and get Miss Leslie Parrish's address, at least as they had it listed.  MBarnum is going to write her and request an interview.  If he's successful, she will then get my book.

It was very difficult going on that site.  I couldn't fill in any of my credit card info via AOL because AOL kept freezing.  I then tried Safari, but kept getting "this is not a secure page" sign - so I wouldn't submit from there.  I did see they use Verisign, which is what most e-tailers use for secure transactions, so I knew it had to be secure.  I finally tried using IE and that worked.  I got the "secure" pop up and all was well.  I still have quite a few hours left to search for addresses, if anyone wants to find anyone (I chose the unlimited 24 hour searches.

Der Brucer came loudly into my room, declaring "We have to take the dogs for a walk!"

What he meant was that we were taking Peggy and the pups for several trips up and down the street, while taking our regular pack in shifts.

The first shift included Peggy, Benedick and Baxter, all leashed to der Brucer, and Bonnie and Buster, leashed to me.  Peggy was quite interested in Bonnie and Buster, sniffing and doing play-pounces, and Bonnie and Buster were somewhat interested in her.  By the end of the first shift, however, it was clear that the little pups were tuckered, so the game plan shifted.

Bax and Benny went back to the basement, and I traded BonBon and BusBus for Fletcher.  Yes, Fletcher was interested in Peggy, but what he really wanted to do was run.

By the time we got to the third round, with Marty and Mikey, Peggy was looking at us like "What is this, speed dating?"  She and the boys hardly paid any attention to each other at all.

Everyone got back home, safe and sound.  Then it was time for lunch.

I'd already cooked up a big pot of rice and a chicken breast, under the vet's suggestion as food the pups would like.  Of course, where he had suggested "boiling" the chicken breast, I of course poached the breast and then used the poaching liquid as the rice-cooking medium.

Today I chopped up half of the breast very fine, mixed it in with some of the rice, and took it down to see if the pups would like it.  Benedick was easy to find, and got the first half of the dish to sample.  He liked it!  Munch munch munch, tail wagging.  Then I hunted down Baxter, the pup we've been worried about for poor eating habits.  To my relief, Baxter also liked it!  More munching, more tail wagging.

Peggy was disappointed that I hadn't made any for her, of course.

I've got more chicken breasts thawing; good thing we buy in bulk.

Still, it's a surprising turn of events.  Here I've got this big, fancy kitchen, and I'm cooking for dogs!

At least they appreciated their meal better than der Brucer liked his last night.   :-\   ::)

LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY easily won its time slot last night as well scoring above what new episodes of ER have averaged in that slot this season. Of course, it was facing a WITHOUT A TRACE rerun for its premiere episode.

Tonight it moves to its regular Friday at 10 p.m. slot, and CBS is throwing a CSI rerun on opposite it to blunt its chances of scoring well in the new time period.

I kept laughing while reading your dog  walking adventures.

If you really want a laugh, you have to see it in person.

You know how when you were young (or at least when I was young) all the lads and lasses grabbed a hold of a color streamer tied to the top of a large pole and danced about weaving the intricate maypole design to celebrate Persephone's return (all to the tune of "In a British Country Garden")?  Well, think of Woody with five different colored leashes on different dogs all intent on weaving a pattern - if we didn't have different colors, poor Woody would still be in the road attempting disentanglement.

der Brucer

To tell the truth - I didn't know the name of the tune, I just la-dee-dahed a few measures and Woody named it.

DR Ron Pulliam - I think it's from the song "What's the Use of Wondering" from Carousel.

.What's the Use of Wond'rin'?
Girls
Stonecutters cut it on stone
Woodpeckers peck it on wood
There's nothin' so bad for a woman
As a man who's bad or good!

Julie

What's the use of wond'rin',
If he's good or if he's bad?
Or if he likes the way he wears his hat?
But what's the use of wond'rin',
If he's good or if he's bad?
He's your fellow and you'll love him
That's all there is to say...

Woman sense may tell you
That the ending will be sad
And now is the time to break and run away
But what's the use of wond'rin'
If the endin' will be sad?
He's your fella and you'll love him
There is nothin' more to say...

Something made him the way that he is,
Whether he's false or true,
And something gave him
The things that are his
And one of those things is you...

So, when he wants your kisses
You will give them to the lad
And anywhere he leads you,
You will walk...
And anytime he needs you,
You go runnin' there like mad,
You're his girl and he's your fellow,
And all the rest is talk...

In my CD player at work:  Barry Manilow's "2NIGHTS LIVE!"  I am really enjoying this CD.  I don't have a lot of Barry Manilow recordings, but I like what I do have. ;D After that will be the Dutch cast recording of Stephen Sondheim's Passion.  I've listened to this already and it's really good...well, I like it and I like the show.

In my VCR:  a tape to tape tonight's "Battlestar Galactica."  I didn't realize that "Star Trek:  Enterprise" isn't on tonight until just now.

And DRs Matthew and JRand, check your mailboxes early next week!!  Thank you both!

Here is a bit of Craod and Mingoo's act:

Craod:  Last night I dreamt I ate a marshmallow and when I woke up, my pillow was gone.

Mingoo: These foreign cars today are so small that I stuck out my hand to make a left turn and two of them ran up my sleeve.

Craod: These jokes are as old as the hills.

Mingoo: That's what I'M talkin' about.

Craod: Oh, now you're trying to be hip?

Mingoo: Whaddup, dawg?

Craod: You're about as hip as a ten-dollar hooker eating a snow cone.

Mingoo:  You're about as hip as a ten-dollar weaver eating a snow cone.

Craod: Knock, knock.

Mingoo: Come in.

Craod: Not come in, you stupid idiot.  Who's there?

Mingoo: Who's where?

Craod: Knock knock.

Mingoo: Come in.

Craod: Locksmith.

Mingoo: Mechanic.

Craod: Locksmith who?  Lox mith bagels.

Mingoo:  And when I woke up my pillow was gone.

Another compelling episode of TRIAL BY JURY tonight. I'm really going to enjoy this series. Its feel is totally different from the other LAW & ORDER shows.

In the next to last scene tonight, Jerry Orbach was whispering his lines because his voice was too weak to speak up in the scene. Everyone else in the scene was also told to whisper during filming so it wouldn't seem so odd that he was the only one whispering. That knowledge gave a very eerie tone to that moment in the show.

I also like the show but had a hard time with the defense's portion of the show on how they try to manipulate the system even though the client is guilty. I wanted the government to win.

However I hope that in future shows they might spend more than 5 minutes in the jury room. Turning a lone not guilty vote to guilty took about a minute. Otherwise I think that the show will succeed.

This whole thing gives a new meaning to the phrase "pole position."

Well I am going to have Voom HD installed tomorrow. I am taking it for 6 months. We will see if this HD is better than Adelphia.

I will also be doing some touch ups to act two of the play. I have a deadline of next week to submit the play for consideration for a theater here in Florida. This will come before the reading in April. If chosen it will be done in the theater's 2005-2006 season.

One of the requirments is that they play has to be unproduced. So I have to find out if a reading as a fundraiser is considered a production.

Fox had a show on last year called THE JURY that spent the majority of the hour in the jury room, and it was a dismal failure. Obviously, audiences want to see more of the machinations behind the two sides rather than jury deliberations. I had no problem watching the defense side and their scheming to get the client off. Obviously, sometimes they are going to win. No LAW & ORDER show has ever had the prosecution winning 100% of the time.

And I like that. Even when the person is guilty. I forgot about that show. Even though I never saw I think people saw it more as an anthology. Different characters ever week. I think I still would like to see a little more jury action and perhaps a little more or the grand jury moments. I never knew that they could ask questions. I find that fascinating. More of that!

Orbach is replaced in the third episode (March 11) by Scott Cohen, with no plot explanation. Episode four will deal with Brisco's death.

"We're actually handling Jerry's death and the death of the character in very much the same way," said Walon Green, executive producer of Trial by Jury.

"We will reference the character's death in a scene that talks about a memorial ceremony," Green said during a conference call with TV critics. "Jerry - and in this case Brisco - was somebody who kept on the job and worked 'till, you know, the final hour."

This came from the Rocky Mountain NEws

Green said the script will stick with reality. Brisco won't be killed by a gunshot or involved in an accident.

Tonight the Vixter, her friend Emily & I went tot eh local high school production of  "Seussical the Musical"  while the songs  and the book did not overwhelm me some of the kids really did.

There was character of a General there, from the (Butter Battle Book) and he spoke and sand in a deep bass voice, I thought it was a teacher they had fillingin but it was a 15 year old boy, and could he sing!!!

There were several really talented performers, quite impressive.

The girls had a lovely time and the show was well received, and I still got home in tiome to see "Law & Order" with Mr. Jerry Orbach's last performance.  The scene outside the courtroom with everyone whispering  was quite touching.

My dad was enpaneled on a grand jury last year.  He said they could all ask as many questions as they wanted to .

Early to wuss.

Easy for him to say - now that he has brought chaos to our once humble abode.

Now I admit, I've made a mistake ot two in my life - like not firmly closing the front door- but never, ever, did I go downstairs and leave that door open.

We rapidly had curious upstairs dogs going downstairs, and more curious downstairs dogs going upstairs, followed by the upstairs dogs that went downstairs going back upstairs to see what the downstairs dogs were doing upstairs - think the Ark stirred with a spoon!

Peggy did a thorough inspection of each and every room, Benny and Baxter explored each nook and cranny, and the upstairs tribe broke into tag teams trying to keep track of the goings-on. The downstairs dogs did a pretty good imitation of Goldilocks- trying out every chair for optimum comfort.

Just as things quieted down, Benny did the unpardonable - he pooped on the living room rug. This heinous crime egregious breach of decorum could not be allowed to pass unnoticed, so a fethced a paper towel, scooped up the poop, scooped up Benny, and headed for the back door. I pushed Benny thrrough the doggie door, then opened the door and followed him out side; we deposited the poopy towel on the ground, gave the requsite "do it here, dammit" speech, then pushed his head back through the doggie door. There was poor Benny, head in the kitchen and rear legs flailing in mid-air in the back yard - one good push and House Breaking Lesson #1 was over.

Soon after everyone had sort of settled down it was dinner time - so, I scooped up the puppies and headed downstairs with Peggy close behind. And there they stayed. And the door was shut.  And dinner was enjoyed to a seranade of rejected howls from below :(

Oh well, I guess a little socialization is good for the soul.

Good Evening!

Day 2 of auditions...  Not too bad a day.  Good pacing for the most part, and good talent.  Not great, but good.  I also ran into a bunch of people I hadn't seen in a while while walking around the hotel.  And I even managed to get a nice run in on the treadmill after playing for about 275 people today.  Whew!

-Oh, and I just had a pretty good Almond "Horseshoe" cookie and a generous scoop of Haagen-Daaz Chocolate Ice Cream from the Dessertery downstairs.  -And I got my Waffle House fix in earlier too - Love those hash browns!

I would have hung out downstairs for awhile with "everyone", but the way bar area is laid out, it's VERY smoky downstairs - and one of the four(!) bars off the common area allows cigars too, so...  Just way too much smoke.  And the hotel has seemed to suspend the No Smoking rules in certain areas of the hotel during this convention.  Ah, well...  I can usually deal with cigarette smoke, but when there's about 200 people in one area, and the air doesn't circulate all the well...

Just one more day tomorrow of auditions.  And then the rest of my "adventure" begins.  I'm actually thinking I may head home tomorrow night after I'm done with callbacks, just so that I can sleep in my own bed tomorrow night, and have a few extra hours on Sunday before I have to head up to Fairfax Sunday night.  ...And then to New York on Monday...  We'll see...

I am so STOKED!  I just looked at an updated list for the celeb show tomorrow and Samantha Eggar will be there.  I LOVE Samantha Eggar.  I must say, this show is shaping up to be much better than the one I went to a couple of weeks ago.  Another interesting person who'll be there is Donna Baccala.  Donna did a lot of TV in the early seventies, and she also starred in my very first musical, Start at the Top with her then boyfriend Michael Burns. I haven't seen here since then (circa 1972) so I have no idea if she'd remember or not.  But SAMANTHA EGGAR.

Pogue sends his wishes - he's been having DSL problems all day and night.  He was on once, tried to post, and it went down again.  He'll be out of town at a wedding, but will be back at the beginning of the week and hopefully DSL problems will be fixed.
