Title: SWEET AND LOWDOWN
Post by: bk on March 06, 2005, 12:03:25 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you are now craving something sweet and lowdown, as am I, and now it is time for you to post until the sweet and lowdown cows come home.

yes the Miss Joanie Sommers 45 of Johnny Get Angry is one of the first I ever purchase - for 88 cents - almost two hours of baby sitting money.  The Red Warner Bros label....and the flip side was Theme From a Summer Place, both of which I played until they were nearly worn through.  Yes.....I have two of her albums and her 3 CD's....yes she is terrific!

Oh that word again.  I don't even know what it means.  A Margo Channing reference.

Did we already have that word?  I have another waiting in the wings.  I'm senile, you know.  And don't forget the fershluganah vibes.

The Haines album will have several uptempo songs - you can't do all ballads.

Since I don't normally post this late (EST) Here is what I wrote in the last few posts

How about one of the songs you recorded with Joanie for her album in 1990?  (Your first vocal album)

Song Listings:

1. I Won't Dance
2. The Way You Look Tonight
3. The Folks Who Live on the Hill
4. Make Believe/Why Do I Love You
5. Bill
6. All The Things You Are
7. They Didn't Believe Me
8. Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man
9. Long Ago and Far Away
10. Yesterdays
11. A Fine Romance

Or how about one of the songs you mention in what you said about her?

I was lucky enough to produce Joanie’s last new album, back in 1990 or so, for Bay Cities. She’s really wonderful, and these Warner Bros. albums from the 60s are great. I fell in love with her voice the second I heard her first big hit song, Johnny Get Angry. I ran out and bought the 45 of it and played it until it would play no more. I still love that song, as politically incorrect as it may be. The gentleman who wrote it, Mr. Sherman Edwards, would go on to write the classic Broadway musical, 1776. If you haven’t heard Joanie, give the Johnny Get Angry album a try – it’s just delightful, and she does many standards on it, too, like A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and Little Girl Blue. She also does a wonderful rendition of One Boy from Bye, Bye Birdie, and a terrific vocal of the theme from A Summer Place.

 And the Joannie Sommers (http://www.brucekimmel.com/images/sommersfineromance.jpg)

A Fine Romance with Paul Smith on Piano, Jim DeJulio on bass and Frank Kapp on drums is the only Bruce Kimmel CD I do not have in my collection. I have never been able to find it.

The Compliation: The Music of Bruce Kimmel is the other.

Since I posted just discovered that according to Footlights it was recorded in 1992 and they have it as a JAPANESE import!

As I said in one of yesterday's posts, I'm toying with a duet idea for Joanie and Guy - something we almost did as a hidden track on the first Guy Haines album.  This time, I'd pair two songs together and make a "thing" out of it - if I can figure out how to really make it work and sustain itself, arrangement-wise.  I'll be discussing it with Mr. Grant Geissman tomorrow.

Yesterday, sadly, I had no Mexican food. :-[ I had planned on it, but my day was pretty hectic and I didn't really get a chance to even drive through Taco Bell.  I had to go to work so that, for the first time in a long time, I didn't have to use any vacation time!  I usually would take an extra hour for lunch every once in a while and not make it up.  I'd just take the hour of vacation.  Well, a few months ago, I only about four hours of vacation time left!  That's not very much at all.  As of the end of February, I have about 55 hours!  Let's see if I can continue to accrue it instead of nickel and diming it away!

Anyway, after work (I was there until 5:00 p.m.), I went home and took a shower, ate some left-over lasagna and took a bit of a nap so that I would be awake for a high school production of The Sound of Music, that starred the daughter of my friend Margo.  Margo is the one who went with me to Portland for The Antiques Roadshow.  I have to say that, other than the microphone problems (they only had five mics...and not all the soloists had access to them), the show was very well done.  Alexis (Margo's daughter who played Maria) was very good.  But it's not surprising.  She loves performing.  She played Rebecca in a summer children's theater production of Rags last year and was fabulous.

After The Sound of Music, I came home (I now had the time to drive through Taco Bell but no cash) and finished off the lasagna.  That was my day, yesterday.  Maybe later today I'll be able to get some Mexican food.  Better late than never. ::)

Later this afternoon, my housemate's "ladyfriend" (he's never called her his "girlfriend"...but she is) to have a barbecue.  This means that I'll have to clean up the living room.  It's not too bad, just a bit messy.  I put things down and just left them there.  That's what I'll have to do either now, before I go to bed, or in the morning, before the "ladyfriend" arrives.

Tonight(...going to be Last night in a minute), I went a theatre and saw the Swan Lake choreographed by Matthew Bourne. It was fantastic and especially, you know, boys’ swans were very gorgeous, powerful and elegant.  I’ve ever seen Adam Cooper (a main Swan) version, on a special TV program last year, and this time I saw Jose Tirado version. In my opinion, Adam was a dinamic and wild Swan, and opposite to him, Jose’s tonight performance was very sensitive and delicate. And Matthew’s choreography was full of energy and life and so original.  Has anyone ever seen The Swan Lake
By Matthew Bourne when they performed in Los Angeles and in NYC? Probably It was in 1998, as he (Matthew Boune) won the Tony Award in 1999.

Der Brucer and I loved Bourne's Swan Lake when it was performed in Los Angeles.  We thought it was a powerful production.

New York audiences didn't quite "get" the show.  Too many people in NYC didn't make the connection that the men dancing as swans were supposed to be swans, instead seeing them just as men.  As a result, the show was ridiculed as being "gay".  Bourne, saddened by this reaction, decided to have his next two shows, Cinderella and Car Man, play in Los Angeles in the United States, but nowhere else in this country.  What is ironic here is that Car Man did have gay themes, and was the weakest of the three shows, IMHO.

Der Brucer and I, obviously, did not have Mexican food yesterday.  He did, however, have something that was Incan: his soup was a marvelous potage made of leeks and quinoa.

Que esta quinoa, you ask?

Quinoa is a very small grain from South America.  It has a great nutrition value, high in protein and unsaturated fats while low in carbohydrates.  Flavor-wise, it's a bit bland, but it can be used in soups, salads, as a main dish or side dish, as part of a pudding, and even be made into pasta.

Der Brucer liked the soup; the only way he could think of to improve it would have been a splash of sherry floating on top.

In any case, I left right before midnight, and pulled into my parking space here in Richmond around 3:20.  Very good time.  And it had snowed here yesterday too!  Just a very light dusting, but still snow.  I kept seeing all these ice warnings posted on the digital road signs, but couldn't figure out why.... Ooohhhh....

After bringing all my bags in, and chatting briefly with my roomie, I more or less stumbled into bed.  As soon as I stepped into my apartment, the past three days caught up with me. I was T-I-R-E-D!

Next thing I knew, it was 11:30 this morning...

So, now I'm just doing some laundry, going through my mail, and putzing around in general.  I did pack my big luggage before heading to Greensboro, so all I have to do is supplement it with some more "necessaries".

Like DR MattH's locale, it's a gorgeous day here too.  I may go ahead and take a walk in a bit.  I need to do some banking via ATM, and the walk down to my bank would be very nice.

I also kept thinking I had a ton of stuff to take care of today, but since I took care of most of it - well, more than I thought - last week...  I can be a bit leisurely today - which is good.

:)

DR vixmom - As for the overdone song, I think I had mentioned the two songs from MILLIE.

Only one "Defying Gravity".  -Which was a good thing.  -Cause if you can sing that song correctly, you probably didn't need to be at SETCs. ;)

And now that I've had a day from the proceedings...

Horror Story #1...  Well, more like a funny one...

A young woman sang "C'est Magnifique"...

She started at the beginning of the song, and ended at.. "It is so tra-gi-que...."

-And it certainly was!

;D
Title: Re:SWEET AND LOWDOWN

Funny Horror Story #2...

A young woman sang "Not A Day Goes By"

I think she thought it was more like an opera aria.  She started in the middle where the melody starts to creep up higher and higher.

She never quite made it the high E...  nor the high F...

Thankfully, her cut of the song stopped before the high F#.

;D

Unfortunate Horror Story #3...

A young woman picked this very sweet, personal monologue.  She then went into Kander & Ebb's "A Quiet Thing".

Well, it soon became VERY apparent that she had picked the song because the lyrics complemented her monologue.  She did not realize that song actually calls for a bit of range, vocally speaking.  By the time she got to the middle of the song, she was basically yelling it on pitch just to try to reach the proper pitches.  -And you could tell she was upset too.  Ah, well...

But, hopefully, she learned Lesson #1 - PRACTICE! PRACTICE!  PRACTICE!!

It still amazes me the number of people who come into an audition - whether in Greensboro, Richmond, Chicago, NYC, etc. - who have never practiced their audition song(s).  Oh, they may have sang along with the album a few times, or sang it on their own, but never with a piano, with the music they cut up and pasted into their books.  Big mistake!  BIG!

I'm hoping to see Spamalot, although the timing is not great, as it opens that Friday night.  My only shot is Saturday matinee, but Todd Ellison, who is the conductor, doesn't know if his house seats will be available because critics will still be coming in.

Never fear, BK.  If you miss it in New York, you can always catch the L.A. production of SPAMALOT starring David Hasselhoff, Jason Alexander, and Harvey Korman.

THE LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA
Vivian Beaumont Theatre

First Preview: March 18

Opening: April 18

Director: Bartlett Sher

Cast: Victoria Clark, Kelli O'Hara, Matthew Morrison, Mark Harelik

Very glad to hear that Victoria Clark and Kelli O'Hara are still with the show.  They were the strongest performances (particularly Clark) when I saw it in Seattle some 21 months ago.

Ah, but Keith doesn't sleep with a dog!

Lincoln Center Theater's staging of Adam Guettel and Craig Lucas' new musical about a young American woman who falls for a young Italian man while on holiday.

Sounds like Adam's grandfather's Do I Hear a Waltz!
Uh-oh!  A musical by one of the "annointed" composers?

Advance word on this has been mixed to very good.  There's a big difference in the plots of DIHAW (spinster on vacation) and LITP (young woman on vacation with her worried mother).  Personally, I like what I've heard by Guettel so far, and am looking forward to this.

Upon reflection - while walking - I realized the only three songs we had from WICKED the whole weekend were:

"The Wizard and I" - eh...
"Popular" - triple eh...
"Wonderful" (The Wizard's Song) - pretty good
and the piece de resistance-
"Loathing" - Done as a solo?!?!?!?  And she had cut the song from one section to another so that she ended up with a drastic key change to deal with.  It even took me a few measures to realize I was playing in the right key.

Each one was only done once.  No "Defying Gravity" as stated earlier.  My bad.

Congratulations, MBarnum!

That's a great picture, DR Sandra!  The Swedish Hat World Tour Stops at Nothing!

Right now, I'm going to watch (and hopefully finish) Friday night's "Battlestar Galactica" before my housemate gets home.  He's going to come back later (I don't know when) with his "ladyfriend" and her daughter.  They're going to have a barbecue.  Before I went to bed last night...actually, this morning before I went to bed, I did manage to get all my stuff cleaned up out of the living room.  My bedroom is (and has always) been a complete mess, but no one else (sadly ::) ) goes in there, so it's okay.

As for LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA - I'm looking forward to it too - and I do hope to get to see it.  I know Celia Keenan-Bolger who was with the show in Chicago and Seattle.  Kelli O'hara got bumped up to her role. -Celia is now in Finn's SPELLING BEE.

I don't expect it to be a big hit - with audiences or critics for that matter.  It's definitely an intimate piece, and since most audiences seem to be drawn more to the Bigger, Funnier and Glitzier productions... But, since it's at Lincoln Center, that's a good thing.

-I wasn't sure how to finish that last sentence... Hope you got the point - I almost didn't.

DRHisaka, I saw it in New York, and I thought it was a brilliant and moving production.  I believe David Cullen did the orchestra reduction to around 25 players on Broadway and it sounded quite good.  Adam Cooper was wonderful as the Swan, and I was happy to see it win several Tony Awards.

Hello, all!  I've been E&T all day with housecleaning, laundry, a matinee of UNCLE VANYA, and dinner at Artie's.  I like Chekhov, but I didn't much like this Vanya, with its uneven cast, and a Vanya who seemed to be performing the role for the last row at the Metropolitan Opera and not for the 100-seat theatre I was in.

For those who do not know who Victoria Clark is (and I was one of them until reading this article), the New York Times recently published a bit of PR on her (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/02/27/theater/theaterspecial/27gate.html).

For those who don't know anything about The Light in the Piazza (http://www.lct.org/calendar/event_detail.cfm?ID_event=34551107), the show's webpage is brief but interesting.

Hello DR Ann, how was your drive with your mother?  Did it take you  8 -9 hours as the mom drives or the 35 minutes it apparently takes DR Jed?

If bk will drop hints about wonderful ebay finds and mysterious phone messages and secret selected songs and then simply slip away, he must not complain about my boring laundry stories.

Speaking of tragic, has anyone else seen the new Pepsi commercial that has inserted the famous "I'm Spartucus" scene into a plug for soda?

I bet if Kirk were here he would kick the butt of whomever approved the use of the clip

What I won on eBay: A baseball.  But not just any ordinary baseball.  This one is from Dodger Stadium circa 1959 and it is signed by all the principal cast of the film Li'l Abner, including Miss Leslie Parrish.  How do you like them egg rolls, Mr. Goldstone.

I will only say that I won a fantastically fantastic item on eBay this evening, and that all songs are now chosen and routined for the Guy Haines album.

BK, even though it's not "Ask BK Day" Wednesday, what does "routined" mean...in the context of a recording?  I've never heard that reference.

Was it signed at a Dodgers game....were the Dodgers in LA in 1959?  Stella Stevens and Leslie Parrish at a baseball game?

I am intrigued.

Yes, I believe the Dodgers were here by then - apparently it was Paramount day. Peter Palmer definintely signed, but I'm not sure about Stella.  Carmen Alvarez for sure, Leslie for sure, Mel Frank for sure, Billie Hayes and Joe E. Marks for sure, and Stubby Kaye for sure.

Routining is basically another word for arranging - it's figuring out the layout of the song as we're doing it.  Where and what the vamps are, whether there's an instrumental, what the intro and rideout will be, and what key and key changes (if any) are involved.  I'm very excited about the song selection, as is Mr. Haines.  There is a lot of variety and also a lot of hollywood reporter.  Also, quite a few obscurities and not-often recorded songs, along with a couple of world premieres, and a couple of standards.  Fourteen in all, although we may end up with a fifteenth if we feel we need it.  And there will definitely be a hidden track - something I wanted to do for Guy's first album, but we ran out of time.

Good Evening!

Greetings from Fairfax, VA. -I'm on my way to NYC!

I finally got all my stuff packed up, put away, cleaned, sorted and organized around 7:30.  Then I headed over to Steve's place with some Chinese food for a nice dinner.  Then we watched "How Do I Look?" on the Style Network.   Hmm... Very interesting show... Hmmm....

*But they were running the promos for their new gameshow: Craft Corner Deathmatch.  That sounds interesting too.

OH!  And they had a "Welcome Home! Martha Stewart Living Marathon" on today too.  ;)

Then I drove up here to Fairfax.  Got in around just past midnight.  I've been reorganizing some stuff in my luggage, and just taking care of some little things before heading to bed.  Which I must do soon since I will be on the 7:15 Amtrak later this morning, and I start playing auditions at Equity at Noon.

So...
