T.O.D.

I think the only audio book I have ever listened to was AND THE BAND PLAYED ON by Randy Schilts.  Since it is the only book, I guess it would have to be my favorite audio book.

The only thing I don’t like about it, is that I have take my cross off when I rub in the cream, which I hate to do.  Normally, I never take it off.

I just finished watching the recent feature film version of A Wrinkle in Time (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1620680/reference).  It got a 42% TOMATOMETER rating and a 27% AUDIENCE SCORE on Rotten Tomatoes (https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/a_wrinkle_in_time_2018).  It wasn't great. :-\ It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't very good.

I'm glad I got it from the library.

I knew that it was going to take me a while to finish it, so I set my DVR to record both Stephen Colbert and Seth Meyers.  I'll watch Seth Meyers when his show starts in a few minutes, and watch Stephen Colbert later.

T.O.D.

I used to listen to audio books when I had a long drive to/from work ever day, but that was a long time ago.

Now, like BK, I just create audio books from my novels and plays.  I certainly enjoy working with the actors.  It allows me to put on my director's hat again.

Recently, we finished the audio edition of my one-person play, CLIFTON WEBB.   John A. Boulanger  delivers a terrific performance as Webb.

https://www.amazon.com/Clifton-Webb-One-Person-Play-Acts/dp/B07SH1NCG5/ref=tmm_aud_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1552167264&sr=1-1-fkmrnull

Now, Jean Hetherington and I are finishing up the audio edition of my play, DICK POWELL, which should be available sometime next month.

Reading all this and that about Barry Manilow (who's doing a show at the Lunt Fontanne soon) having to conceal that he was gay all the years.  Was he ever considered a sex symbol, as opposed to just a really good performer and writer?  I know I've seen him live onstage a few times, and I don't recall women throwing their panties like at Tom Jones or Engelbert Humperdinck, but it sounds like they must have.

I spent the morning making phone calls regarding the little surgery I'll be having done next month. Isn't it interesting how what you think will be one brief phone call turns into four calls over two hours? But I'm making progress. I learned that a part of it that I was told isn't covered by insurance probably will be covered. I was also trying to determine how much downtime to expect.

When I first returned to California after living in conservative Virginia for twenty years I noticed a store in West Hollywood advertising herbal remedies. I went in to shop for Chinese herbs. I was surprised to see a bouncer at the door, but didn't think much of it. But the bouncers at the counters definitely got my attention. All this for Chinese herbs? Then, of course, I realized: medical marijuana! Welcome to California! The team of bouncers got a huge laugh out of my mistake.

Listening to the Corigliano Symphony No. 1. It's very modern, and J.B. is raising a ruckus. He squawks every time the violin gets edgy. It's a lot of noise.

Again from John G last night:
I got involved in a romance novel called Pride, Prejudice and Other Flavors, a Bollywood gender-swap take on Austen that's actually a lot of fun. Who cares if it's not original. She's a gorgeous neurosurgeon specializing in impossible to remove brain tumors. He's a chef with a perfect butt and a way with caramel. I wonder how it's all going to end up.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Some years ago I took a screenwriting class with two romance novelists. We were chatting about the publishing business and one told me of a publisher she uses. The publisher's guidelines were a hoot--everyone, of course, is extremely good-looking, rich, intelligent, etc. Sorry, I can't write that stuff. I'm not that hungry. My classmate summed it up nicely when she said, "The men we write about don't exist." Perhaps the women don't, either.

Back from a grueling but fun four-hour  session and we finished.  I had to stop more in the last twenty pages because we had to get those exactly right, tone-wise and character-wise, whereas earlier I wasn't being so nitpicky and that was especially so for the final three pages.  But she did great and I think for people who like audiobooks they'll enjoy her reading.

I remember (because I was eavesdropping :) ) at the Liberace Museum one lady looking at the exhibits said to another "Did he never get married?" and the other said "Do you mean George?" (referring to Lee's brother.  She couldn't imagine her friend had toured the Museum and didn't know Lee was gay.)

He's been on TV, these days of course very open about his marriage.  He's about to start a three-week engagement at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.

They've been trying a series of short engagements (right now is comedian Dave Chappelle) while the theater is empty, before the next tenant (the Tina Turner bio-musical) starts in the fall.

Manilow has always had completely delusional middle-aged women in love with him and I'm sure that's a major part of it - just like Liberace.  I mean, really, how hard is this stuff to figure out?

When you say delusional - do the women think that even if he were straight, he'd have dated/whatevered them anyway?

I don't get the playfulness about Hugh Jackman (though they are doing it effectively), but his management seems to want both gay men and straight women to imagine the possibility.

This is the playbill article about that series of shows.

http://www.playbill.com/article/lunt-fontanne-theatre-will-host-in-residence-on-broadway-series-offering-concert-experiences-from-various-artists

"In Residence on Broadway" has basically been a fancy name for what amount to Vegas or Atlantic City bookings.

I'm wondering:   If anything  distinguished happens here, if these could be eligible  for special Tonys, or might even spice up the Tony show if the year needs it.

I read with some pleasure that Jack Viertel has stepped down from Encores.  I'd actually like to know the real story, because the press release reeks of everyone playing nice and probably abiding by some agreement.

He's leaving after next year, which will include Mack and Mabel, Love Life and Throughly Modern Millie.  He started in 2001.

From the Times article:
“Twenty years is a good run,” Mr. Viertel said. “I came to the artistic directorship with a very specific bucket list of shows that I was fascinated by, and actually that bucket is empty.”

With producing a series like Encores, your bucket list is pretty much taken care of once you've uncovered such lost gems as Pajama Game, Hair and Bye Bye Birdie. It seems everyone is doing those shows these days.

I am happy to announce that DR VIXMOM and DR JOHN G will play Rosemary and Howard in my upcoming production of PICNIC.

I will have them record their performances and the other actors will play to them - they will be represented thusly:

DR Elmore, I don't know how soon you'd be thinking of getting that done, but here are some best vibes right now for a smooth polyp removal procedure!

I made my follow up appointment for this Thursday.  I'll learn more then.  She said it would be a local procedure, like a colonoscopy.  I'll be unconscious, then go home when it's over.

Where did you get it? I bought mine from the kosher acupuncturist, who's allowed by law to dispense such items, so no prescription was needed. Did you have to get a prescription or can you just buy it? Do you have marijuana stores like we have here?

Yes, Jeanne, here in Washington, there are marijuana stores all over the place.

Thank you, George. So no prescription needed?

Not as far as I know.  I think that there's a maximum amount that you can buy at one time, but I don't think a prescription is needed.

I didn't with Manilow, not that he appealed to me.

I hate those "brief" calls.  I hope you will soon be done sorting it all out, and to your satisfaction.

Ha! If his list didn't include Jubilee, Leave It to Me, Let's Face It or Very Warm for May, then his bucket list was fairly empty to begin with.

I found a copy of Standing in the Shadows of Motown today for $5. My high school classmate Joan Osborne is really good in this documentary, not only singing but talking with the folks who played backup for Motown's biggest stars. I had seen this years ago, but not with the second disc, which features more music.

I also went back to Barnes and Noble for one last stop at the Criterion sale. I picked up Rossellini's Flowers of St. Francis, which has a screenplay co-written by Fellini, and Harold Lloyd's Speedy, which I have never seen.

At the start of the movie, the guy is a failed musician and at one moment, the power around the world goes out for 12 seconds.  In that moment, the guy gets hit by a bus, the power comes back on, and he ends up in the hospital.
