To continue from last night:  After dinner, we drove Margo's daughter home, then we went to see The Merry Wives of Windsor performed outside at a local park.  I knew most of the cast and got to chat with most of my friends after the show, so that was fun.

After some 'net surfing, it's time for bed.  Today will be the family's first family dinner together in several weeks.  We're going to have spaghetti.  I'm bringing some diet Pepsi and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.  I'm sure it'll all be good.

Have a good day, all!

I had a hard time getting to sleep last night.  The first issue was Stella, who was completely wound up, running, jumping, climbing everywhere.  Then Thatch joined her and they chased each other through the apartment.

The other reason was my heartbreak and anger over a 2-year-old dog named Don, who was rescued from euthanasia on Tuesday at the last minute by RescueDogsRescueSoldiers.  Yesterday, the hottest day of the year so far, Don was put into a crate to be transported to the rescue for training.  Thanks to the incompetence of the Brooklyn Animal Care Center and the moronic transport driver, Don's cage was put into the back of a van with no air conditioning for a 4-hour ride, not accounting for traffic issues or other problems.  Don was dead on arrival.  To make this situation even more hellish, Don had been neutered on Friday.  God knows what pain and discomfort he was already in before he died.

I'm still in shock for this poor animal, who was off to a possibly wonderful life.

The older 300-seat theater we’re in has great AC but it definitely had trouble keeping up with yesterday’s temperature and humidity, and the second show was more challenging than the first. Just one today, fortunately, then it’s goodbye to OZ.

Loved the REAR WINDOW notes.

BK, I’d guess Hitchcock did this a few times, but that pretty much described the evening I saw it at LACMA in early (Feb?) 1973. It was the kickoff to the two-week retrospective (in which I saw a number of his films for my first time), he provided the print, and Charles Champlin moderated the Q&A afterward. I’m thinking James Stewart might have been there as well, but I could be conflating that with another occasion.

Annabelle, after nearly two years, has become a veteran elevator rider.  As soon as she leave the apartment, she goes directly to the elevator for her ride to the first floor, and when she's bored with exploring, she leaves me sitting on the lobby steps to go back to the elevator to wait for me.

Since there was nothing decent on television, wife Sandy and I watched 3 movies on DVD yesterday:

1. DAVE w/Kevin Kline
2. DARK BLUE w/Kurt Russell
3. THE EDDIE CANTOR STORY w/Keefe Brasselle

DAVE was the best.

A Comcast truck comes to a house.  The next day or so, and AT&T truck comes to the house.  A few days later the AT&T truck comes back to the house.  The next day, the Comcast truck comes back to the house.

Well SEND ME NO FLOWERS is done.

We had a sold out audience....including some repeat viewers.  The cast was very UP and ready for a wonderful closing night.

And then.....and then....and then.....

For some reason, our genius director decided in his curtain speech to instruct the audience that they were to behave as if they were watching an old fashioned melodrama....to applaud all of our entrances....to boo and hiss if they didn't like something....and otherwise interact with us.....

Which completely confused the audience and killed all of our laughs....we played to a comparatively QUIET house.  Things that had gotten HUGE laughs the previous six performances got NO response....it was sad, frustrating, and confusing....

Add to that - the woman who QUIT the show who fancies herself the person to "get the audience going" continued to laugh her LOUD ANNOYING LONG laugh - which of course shut the audience down even more....

As I said....it was a sad ending to what should have been a triumph.

The musical version differs from the animated cartoon, which I avoided, and follows the novel: Esmerelda dies and there is no happy ending.  This recording is essentially the Papermill cast recording.

Based on my once-years-ago watching of the Disney film on DVD, I remember I really liked a lot of the music. But I haven't followed up on either that or the novel at all. Must do.

I've posted before that Skip had written the love ballad for Quasimodo in the Disney sequel, and Skip has decided not to listen to the foreign language versions of this ballad, although he has listened to some of the foreign versions of the funny number he wrote for the gargoyles Victor, Hugo and Laverne.  (He wrote 3 of the 5 songs.)

The singing is always more technically sung than Tom Hulce's in English, but in some languages it's been singerly, if that's a word. Often, it seems there's different speaking Quasi and singing Quasi.  This Italian one seems like a good balance between singer and the character.

I still like Skip's uptempo number for the gargoyles, which were sung by Charles Kimbrough, Jason Alexander who both had also done the movie theater film, and Jane Withers had taken over the late Mary Wickes' part.  Since they decided Jane Withers couldn't sing this particular number to effectively match the two guys they asked our neighbor Mary Jay - who had done the "demo" of the song here in our building basically as a low-pay favor for Skip - if they could use her take right off the demo, and she thought about it for less than one-millionth of a second :) and said of course.

Tom Hulce as Quasi falls in love with Jennifer Love Hewett

Mary Jay still gets checks even 17 years later, though some years it's $4 or $5 unless they do a push - like one year they made the only way to buy Hunchback 1 to buy both 1 and 2 as a package.  There are always little kids reaching age 3 or 4, and strangely while the real movie #1 is skewed much older, the video sequels still aimed then (2002 I think)  for pre-school where parents can park the kids in front of the screen without worry.  They started with a great script for the sequel that aimed for the age as the first film - but then got a better understanding of the video-sequel market before this sequel got released.

Title: Re: THE PERFECTION KNOWN AS REAR WINDOW
Post by: FJL on July 21, 2019, 10:10:39 AM
The very over-simplified sequel for age 3 or 4 still won a couple of awards like the DVD Premiere Award, but too bad that original script for the sequel pretty much disappears.

A funny thing is the animation is of course much much dirt-cheaper on direct-to-video, but I never understood why the crowd scenes even seemed less populated.  it wasn't like they were actually paying real people to be in those cartoon  crowds.

As our music director in school would say, that's suggestive or innuendo like " If Baby I'm the bottom, you're the top" is innuendo.  He would say something like "Suggestive.  That's more like a statement."

And since he was a younger college student and we were older grad students, no one found him saying that anything but funny and adorable. :)

:o Yikes!! I just can't imagine someone doing something like that!  I can imagine it being part of a director's overall concept and doing it at the begining of the run, and then finding out that it's a stupid idea, but not at the end out of nowhere!  Jrand, I'm so sorry for you and your cast.

I did not know this even existed until recently.  I played it for the first time this morning and really liked it.  I may have to read Victor Hugo's novel now.

I have that particular recording and really like it.  However, I have and LOVE the original 1999 German cast recording (http://castalbums.org/recordings/Der-Glockner-Von-Notre-Dame-1999-Original-Berlin-Cast/1015/).  The newer recording is the official English language version, but this German recording is, I think, a better version of the score. Just my my 2¢. :)

I have avoided that particular Disney-fied movie since they made the Hunchback a lovable little imp....but maybe it has its moments.

The musical version differs from the animated cartoon, which I avoided, and follows the novel: Esmerelda dies and there is no happy ending.  This recording is essentially the Papermill cast recording.

Yes!  And so there can't be a stage version of Hunchhback: The Musical II. ::)

Annabelle once again has chose the darkest and furthest recesses of one of my two closes to hide out in and now her head is full of dust, her breathing sounds like huge farts and because her nose is blocked, she's not eating.  This means another vet trip in the too near future.

I've read some of Zola's Rougon-Macquart novels in these editions. I liked the introductions, which I can't always say.

If you do watch it, think 3 or 4 year old being kept quiet and out of parents' way for an hour.   Maybe Skip will be better off if you don't comment online on the overall movie,  since Skip still gets his royalties based on how the video does.  :) especially the animation level which I read then they deliberately don't want to look as good as the theatre movies or something like that.  They succeeded!

But musically - I have to say it's really impressive work in what the music person who underscored the whole video did weaving in the opening by a pretty clever funny team  and Skip's 3 songs.  (no idea who was on the project first).

Skip was invited to attend the orchestral recording in London just for a photo-op I guess and the fun, which was nice of them, but flying economy for one day  to London is excruciating.  (And even his agent expected  he'd just get to watch and listen, no time for input at that point.  But they got the mix to Skip pretty quickly and he seemed very happy.

And Jane Withers looped in her own voice for the other writers' opening.  so two different songs have a different "Laverne" singing.

Back from a meal at the Northridge Brent's Deli, which is the original location - it's been there since at least the late 1990s as we used to order takeout from there when we recorded at Rumbo Recorders, the studio the Captain and Tennille owned.

Have you tried rinsing her in distilled water to get the dust off of her?  Doing that to my cats helped my allergies, maybe it will help her.

Been listening to a peck of Kritzerland soundtracks while trying to finish this story. I'm up to 918 words and need to focus my eyes elsewhere for a few minutes.

Too Late Blues, The Fuzzy Pink Nightgown, The Apartment/The Fortune Cookie, Divorce Italian Style, My Geisha and now The Molly Maguires.

Some wonderful music in there.

I guess I know what the script writers wrote, and it had such an exciting villain  and the non-scary one in the rewrite is so "meh."  Everyone was so excited about what they were doing, but it was 2001 or so, and the numbers show they were right about their target audience for the non-movie-theater versions.

I just watched Haley Joel Osment's number with Tom Hulce in a few languages.  The video coming out in early 2002 was perfect timing for Skip, with more than enough positivity for the songs that it gave him a nice push to have a good time writing the "Last Starfighter" score.

The spaghetti at my sister's was pretty good.  My mom made spaghetti sauce with ground turkey for the non-vegetarians, and my sister made vegan sauce for her and her daughter.  I took home some of the left-over ground turkey spaghetti sauce.
