I would post a photo Keith put up on facebook but the file is too large.

I also happen to watch Julie with Doris Day this weekend. I had taped it when it was on Turner classic movies when they have a tribute to her. Is this one of the movies that she was forced to do because her husband signed the contract for it without her knowing it? But she forced to do that awful sad beginning because the audience expect her to sing in a movie?  Yes I know I was nominated for an Academy award but still…It’s so strange that people were allowed to bring guns on the plane, ordinary passengers were able to open the door to the cockpit.

With all the talk about the creature wasn’t nice. I decided to watch it. I’m looking forward up the new cut. A couple of interesting things. The jacket cover says the running time and the video runs 81 minutes and the IMDb (not always correct) says it 88. A couple of observations. How did they put the translator on the creature with our being attacked? Was there a scene filmed and cut? Also I know you did the singing voice of the creature but did Max use John’s voice because he found the creature. Did you ever consider Broderick Crawford to sing it? Will you be interviewing the other surging cast members as extras?

I don't recall the most we had paid on car repairs, not something I like to think about.  I do recall having to return several times to get the fix done correctly and the repairs adding up to much more than expected.  There was the time I made them give me my money back once it was determined the original fix had not been necessary.

TOD

I think this was around Thanksgiving week of 1993, and mine was (wait for it...) a $2400 engine replacement.

Early one cold morning I set off for someplace and hadn't been aware I was losing oil pressure. About three miles out, on the interstate, the thing began losing power, then started squealing and screeching. I was just coming up to an exit and was able to nurse the car down the ramp, where right across the road there was a full service gas station. I got the car parked there and found they weren't open yet, so I left it and walked up the road to a McDonald's to get some coffee and whatever to fortify myself, all the while hoping for the best. When I got back to the station they were open, we looked under the hood, and an all too quick oil check (and smell of burnt oil and scorched metal) told us that the engine was done for. Just like that. It could have been my fault for not knowing how to keep a close watch on things, or it might have been something catastrophic that simply happened. At that point it didn't matter, the damage was done.

The car was my much loved 1987 Nissan 200-SX that I'd brought here from LA. Long story short, when they told me they'd found a replacement engine with similar mileage on it and it would cost $2400, it seemed worth it to go ahead with that and continue enjoying that particular car. And that did turn out to be the right thing to do, considering it served me well for another several years. What I *didn't* do was check around to see if I had any better options, because a friend of a friend who was a fully able mechanic told me later (literally, that very afternoon) that he could have done the entire job himself for a $600 engine replacement plus something for labor (he jad searched and found one within half an hour). And I believe him. By then it was too late to stop the work at the gas station. and that was actually the larger lesson learned that day.

Other than that, just repairs of a more routine nature.

The most expensive was probably a new automatic transmission for that same Nissan, $1500 a few years following the engine thing. For the stick shift VW, probably a new clutch (manual transmission) for $800, and new timing belts for several hundred bucks apiece. If you keep a car long enough, these things are "normal".

Jean Hetherington does a marvelous job as the legendary actor, singer, producer-director, who starred in everything from Busby Berkeley musicals (42ND STREET, etc.) to an Abbott & Costello comedy (IN THE NAVY) to classic film noir (MURDER, MY SWEET, CORNERED, etal.).

Hetherington's audio performance in enhanced with music and sound effects.

Prof. Chayes gave us this bit of wisdom in the second week of law school (it's a lawyer joke, of course)

If the facts are against you, pound on the law.
If the law is against you, pound on the facts.
If the facts and the law are against you, pound on the table.

Here are the actual run times:  Naked Space, if I'm remembering correctly, runs seventy-six minutes, despite what the packaging says.  My preview cut of The Creature Wasn't Nice ran 88-minutes, so the iMDB is correct.  My current version runs 86-minutes.

I don't think you can assign logic to the plot of The Creature Wasn't Nice.  Perhaps they lowered the translator onto its head from above.  I did provide the voice - me, not the character of John.

I'm up, I'm up - eight hours of sleep or close to it.  I was up at ten-thirty, answered e-mails, had several telephonic conversations, but hadn't heard a peep from the car place.  I called, was told my service agent's name was Dave and that he was with a customer.  He called me back about fifteen minutes later - it was very clear the car hadn't even been looked at let alone diagnosed.  What is, I wonder, the point of leaving a car the night before, if they're not going to look at it first thing in the morning?  Anyway, he just called - at the moment they can't get it to start - he asked if the battery was dead and I told him it's barely a year old and shouldn't be dead and that if it is it's under warranty.  So, the next step is doing a diagnostic to find the problem, which they charge $175 for, but which is applied to the repairs.  I then got strong with the guy, telling him I'd had a really bad experience with the previous owners of that dealership and that he had to be straight with me every step of the way, and that he cannot give me wrong information or do anything that's not real - I told him if that's what it feels like, I take it instantly to another service place for a second opinion.  He promised me he would take care of me.  So, I probably won't hear anything until tomorrow morning.

Hello, everyone.
Title: Re: LOCK IT UP
Post by: Jeanne on July 29, 2019, 02:33:05 PM
After many, many years of mixed experiences my preferred way to buy a car is this: find a late-model, mint-condition quality car, with low miles and at a good price. Then take it to a good independent mechanic. For warranty work it has to go to the dealer, but most things can be done by the independent. Independents can't stay in business long if they don't do good work and many have loyal followings. There may be some competent and honest dealer out there, but many are bandits. They're in business to sell cars, so do they really have an incentive to do good repairs?

My previous car was a Volvo, which I loved and kept until it was no longer practical, about 13 years. I then sold it to an independent Volvo mechanic, who buys old Volvos, repairs them, and then resells them. I knew he could fix it and that it still had some years left.

I did a lot of swearing due to the treatment I--and most of their customers--received from the Volvo dealers. If they can't find what's wrong, they tell you they found something else that needs fixing, whether it does or not. One mechanic, who was previously a Volvo service manager, admitted to me that they do that, then added, "If I didn't do it, they'd find someone else who would."

Yes, Lady Jane, the heat was so dry that I woke up with nose bleeds.  The good news is you should be safe from injury for a while as I was very graceful and fell in the yard while feeding the cats.  Did a slide through the dirt onto the walkway ending up with a badly scraped up leg and a long wide bruise across the palm of my hand.

The book is called “Swearing Is Good for You.”

I agree.

Hmmm, maybe I should swear more.  I know Keith would prefer I said damn instead of darn.

Jane, I think that you're mature enough to handle the upgraded terminology. ;)

I am supposed to be at my book discussion group discussing Madame Fourcade's Secret War: The Daring Young Woman Who Led France's Largest Spy Network Against Hitler by Lynne Olson.  Since only 2 of has actually read the book the others wanted to postpone the discussion until next week.  The other person who read the book won't be here & is not happy about it.

I will be here but will miss the following month and had been looking forward to that discussion.

Ouch, Jan. Vibes you heal very quickly.

Jane, the book on swearing is interesting because it deals with how your brain reacts and behaves when you swear.

I'm finally getting back to "Us." It's more gruesome than Greta (the title of my next book), but it's also a much better movie. I'm surprised at how good of a horror movie it is, and how good the humor in it is. It's not my kind of movie, but it's well worth watching it. Great premise, very creepily executed.

I should read the short version.  I do swear occassionaly when I really need to.  I did not say "Darn, I broke my shoulder" ;)

As much as I loved Us, I needed to start something a little more upbeat to end the day on. So, I'm watching a documentary called Science Fair, which follows a number of people involved in a high school science fair competition. They're smart, they're self-confident, and the projects they made are fascinating.

King Kong was fun and I'm glad I saw it.  The music did not make me want to rum out and buy the OBC cd but it was pleasant  enough while it was being sung, and it was sung well

The dancing was very energetic if the choreography was somewhat repetitive.

The chorus members were very nice to look at.

Interesting and good use of projections for back ground, and they were especially effective in scenes where there was running, climbing and traveling by ship

I watched the rest of Science Fair. Amazing. There's one Muslim girl from South Dakota, who is one of the top science kids in the world, but her high school never announces it or pays any attention to her. They pay attention to the football team, though. I wonder if it's because she's a girl or a Muslim or both.

Not as much a I hoped.  I never really connected to either if the brothers, it was interesting in a dispassionate way, I really didn't care what happened to them, but it was kind of entertaining to see what would happen next (if that makes any sense)
