Title: UNSEEMLY BUTTOCKS
Post by: bk on March 12, 2005, 11:58:48 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know the vibe of the notes, you know the xylophone of the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home dragging their Unseemly Buttocks.

Well, everyone is just sitting on their Unseemly Buttocks like so much fish, so I think I shall toddle off to the bedroom environment, as I am very overtired and must try to get a good night's sleep.

And remember - FLIBBITIGIBBIT!

Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it.

Groove for Thought, eh George?  Their bass, Jeff, is a friend of mine from college.  Also know the group's founder, Kelly (sings baritone in there, I think), a bit.  Haven't heard them in about two years, but were always solid.

Dear BK: I looked up the word for the day, and was told no such word exists.  I then went for an alternate spelling, and came up with the following:

flib·ber·ti·gib·bet
Pronunciation: "fli-b&r-tE-'ji-b&t
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English flepergebet
Date: 15th century
: a silly flighty person
- flib·ber·ti·gib·bety /-b&-tE/ adjective

The pups are at long last settling down.  When last spotted, Benny had his nose sticking out from under one end of der Brucer's bed, and Bax had his tail sticking out from the other end.

Time to tuck them in and hope for a restful sleep.   ::)

They were very good.  They were absolutely the best group of the evening, even though I only saw them perform one song!

Good morning, fellow Dear Readers.

After church, I shall spend the rest of the day in a board meeting. Last month's meeting went five hours. Ugh.

DR SWoody -- are you going to keep Peggy and the pups? Or if you adopt them out, are you responsible for finding them homes? Or does the shelter take them back and put them up for adoption? (When we fostered, the shelters took them back -- we didn't need to find homes.)

Yes DRMS I saw the MOON OVER BROADWAY dvd.  I agree that the play was not so hot.  And once Carol Burnett came on board, the dynamics were skewed.  They didn't see her as the asset she was.  It was disconcerting to see her try to change dialog and try to paraphrase - but of course the things she was being made to say weren't so hot to begin with.

It is an interesting documentary that would be of interest to anyone working in theatre.

Good mawnin' to all East Coast denizens, and early risers everywhere!

We had such a great rehearsal yesterday. I feel so good about this show. Whatta team we are!!!

Jose was quite relaxed and In The Zone - he played so beautifully, it quite took my breath away. The underscoring for the monologues is so delicate - supportive without intrusion, and Maestro Simbulan pulls exquisite phrases from that beaten up cigar box they call a piano, in the 72nd St. Studios. Oh, the man has HANDS!!!

So, today Bill (tech guy) and I run out to Bristol PA to borrow the set furniture from last year's production of this show - it's such a nice day for a drive!!! And tomorrow we load in and hoist and shlep and build and hang, Tuesday tech all day, Tuesday night tech run-thru, Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday at 1, and open Wednesday night. WOWIE!!! Time just hurtles by, doesn't it, anymore... hop into the flow, or miss life, completely...

hey, Vixmom!!! Jane copied your post to me - I'm so happy you laughed!!! I just LOVE it when they laugh!!! (Sagittarians are rather known to be clowns - just ask BK...)

Y'all have a sweet happy day!

The SPCA operated shelter has washed their hands of the animals - it was their intent to destroy them, and our Animal Rescue League (ARL) came to their aid. It was ARLs intent to ship them off to some other rescue that had their own shelter accommodations, but so far no takers. We're stuck with them until "someone" finds them homes.

I complicated the issue when I said that I did not think it would be good for the animals to go back to a "shelter" environment - they have learned to be "family" and re-kenneling would not be a good idea (particularly not for the pups who need regular daily animal/human contact if they are to mature into social critters. Considering the bad rep pit bulls have, our ability to give personal testimony as to their socialbilty is important. When the weather warms and we can take them for strolls along the boardwalk or off to cafe patios for drinks , maybe we'll find some "takers".

Hey DRs Stuart and Ron, I finally got to see the finale of Wickedly Perfect last night.  And I read your comments from Thursday.  Wow, we all agreed on something.  Crazy ending.  And I agree what the heck was Bobby thinking?  He is a chef and he voted for the woman who served him food everybody thought was gross.  She should have lost IMO just for that.

I think the show had an interesting concept.  But it was lacking in many areas.  I especially hated the way the contestants could vote out the stronger players.

I was happy that David considered past performance when voting for Mitch.  Kimberly did nothing all season.  She only came into her own when she was shown doing the Early Show.

I don't see how she could get her own show. I think that the Martha Stewart Apprentice show will eat her alive.

BK: How about Mr. Ron Raines for your male singer?

Mr Ron Raines will be in LA with some GUIDING LIGHT promo.

Good morning, all!  As i type this, I'm listening to a couple of Mozart masses to complete my religious enlightenment for the week, K 66, Mass in C, and K 49, Missa Brevis in G.  Then, who knows?

Yesterday was a bizarre day at Barnes & Noble, in which I had a brief glimpse of DRJose moving through the store, rubbed elbows poorly with manager Patty, whom I really adore, and the difficult floor manager who was instrumental (although I can't prove it since it's all gossip) in breaking up a friendship with another clerk.  Then the icing on the cake was hearing some news about the false friend mentioned in the above sentence which, even though the friendship fell apart two years ago, proves that wounds don't necessarily heal but lie dormant waiting to erupt and toss your security and contentment into hell.

Last night, I watched THE SEVEN LITTLE FOYS, which I hadn't seen since I was around 7 or 8 years old.  I loved the kids, I love Bob Hope, but I watched it primarily to see what it showed on the Iroquois Theatre fire of 1903.  The answer, very little, and very inaccurately.   Then I watched ABOUT ADAM, with Kate Hudson and Stuart Townsend, which would have been improved by an amoral rewrite by someone like Joe Orton.  I never got to the end; I was neither amused nor interested enough to continue.

I have a book meeting today around 1:00, so this morning it's housecleaning.

I will come back and sing CARMEN again!

When the Kennedy Center attempted to begin an Encores!-like series, the author of MOON OVER BROADWAY did the concert adaptation of WHERE'S CHARLEY?, replacing a lot of George Abbott's book and it's innocent look at Victorian conventions with smarmy lines like Charley in the Aunt Lucy drag saying to Amy and Kitty when they kiss his cheek "I haven't had so much fun since I bathed with my sister."   I've never forgiven him.

Did I sing the Habanera yet?

Tonight, I watched “Rhapsody In Blue” on DVD. I really enjoyed it and learned a few things about American musical films and also some trivias on George Gershwin, like the Gershwins were in neighborhood (or in a same residential diestrict ) of the Marxs when George was young and/or An American from An American In Paris meant himself. Besides those things, I liked to see many legendary actors and actresses which appeared in the roles of themselve in it.
A good movie for the day.

Yep, DR Michael Shayne, I've seen MOON OVER BROADWAY. I have it on DVD. Honestly, I didn't remember them bad-mouthing Carol Burnett on it. I guess I need to re-watch it. I remember that the author (Ken Ludwig) looked pretty bad for not being able to come up with jokes on command. Frankly, I didn't think anyone came off looking particularly good in the project.

Interesting times, here in the Pacific Northwest.  First of all, I should point out, we continue to experience the blue skies and warm temperatures that have replaced our usual rain, cold, and gray skies this winter.  Many folks in this neck of the woods, already believe that we are heading for either Armageddon; or at the very least, a record drought.   Last night, within a few minutes time, we experienced an earthquake in this region; followed ten minutes later by the fiery meteorite that streaked across the skies; followed sixty seconds later by a major power failure in several areas of Seattle.  Very strange.

It was rather funny to see this poor young television reporter standing on the darkened streets of Seattle calmly assuring the home viewers (and more importantly, himself) over and over, “There is no connection between these events.  There is no connection…………

So, topic for discussion, has anyone ever experienced a chain of events (either good or bad) so strange that you almost believed there were greater forces at work?

Looking forward to the suprise on Saturday night!   :D

Too bad about Ron Raines.

But some others from the Bruce Kimmel Rep Players who recorded multiple albums are:

Gregg Edelman
Jonathan Freeman
Davis Gaines
David Green
Brian D'arcy James
James Ludwig
Michael Rupert
Sal Viviano
Lee Wilkoff
Walter Willison
Jason Workman

Any chance Harry Groener or Jason Graae are in the NYC area?

Would Guy Haines sing at the Drama Book Shop if he did it with his back to the audience?

I just read a little note from restorer/historuian Robert Harris saying that it would have cost Warners six figures to clean up LIBELED LADY. I'm sure they figured it just wouldn't be financially logical to spend that much on the film. However, the concensus seems to be that all of the other films in the boxed set are wonderful transfers that are in much better shape than LIBELED LADY. That was a relief to read. I guess I'll tackle BRINGING UP BABY next.

TCB -  I was at the opera in Seattle when the lights went out.  They were quick to catch it, it only stayed dark for a few seconds.  The subtitles reader board took a bit longer to come back, though.  During the Sorpano's Act ! aria, we had no idea what she was saying.  Amazing, though, that the orchestra and singers didn't miss a beat.
I didn't know about the meteor and the earthquake until I got home and watched the news.

If it makes you feel any better, the weatherman says that our weather is supposed to get a bit more normal in the coming weeks.  Still gonna be a bad drought, though.

More thought given. I do believe that certain  people enter our lives at the right times. It may be because we are subconsciously sending out messages for our emotional needs to be filled, but time and again the "right" person appears. Hopefully, it is a coincidence of needs.

Droughts, floods, Earthquakes, fires, George Bush, John Howard - the loss of compassion in society - now to find the connection.

We'll be keeping Peggy and the pups for a while, making sure they get socialized properly.  And housetrained!

The goal is to adopt them out.  We simply can't keep every dog that needs a home.  The local SPCA is NOT a solution in our area; their mission is animal control, not animal placement, which roughly translates to catch 'em and dispatch 'em.  Fortunately, the Animal Rescue group we're associated with is based on the placement philosophy, so they'll be helping as much as they can in finding homes for the crew.  The problem is, there are more dogs in southern Delaware than people that can/will provide good homes.  We may have to take Peggy and family farther afield to find them their next homes.

Dear Dogs and Cats,

When I say to move, it means go someplace else, not
switch positions with each other so there are still
two of you in the way.

The dishes with the paw prints are yours and contain
your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my
food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle
of my plate of food does not stake a claim for it
becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that
aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a
racetrack. Beating me to the bottom is not the object.
Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than
you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king size bed. I
am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue
to sleep on the couch to ensure your comfort. Look at
videos of dogs and cats sleeping. They can actually
curl up in a ball. It is not necessary to sleep
perpendicular to each other stretched out to the
fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking
tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the
other end to maximize space used is nothing but
sarcasm.

My compact discs are not miniature Frisbees.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the
bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and
manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to
claw, whine, meow, and try to turn the knob, or get
your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open.
I must exit through the same door I entered. In
addition, I have been using the bathroom for years -
canine or feline attendance is not mandatory.

The proper order is kissing me, then go smell the
other dogs or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough.
It would be such a simple change for you.

To pacify you, I have posted the following message on
our front door.....

Quote
Rules for Non-pet owners who visit and like to
complain about our pets:

1. They live here. You don't.

2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay
off the furniture.

3. I like my pet better than I like most people.

4. To you it's an animal. To me he/she is an adopted
son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours
and doesn't speak clearly.

5. Dogs and cats are better than kids. They eat less,
don't ask for money all the time, and are easier to
train. They usually come when called, never drive your
car, don't hang out with drug-using friends, don't
drink or smoke, don't worry about buying the latest
fashions, don't wear your clothes, don't need a
gazillion dollars for college, and if they get
pregnant, you can sell the results.

Oh yes, the newscasts were quite entertaining, indeed.

And they picked up great sound bites:

Dear Dogs and Cats,

<SNIP>

I personally don't own a pet (for the time being), but my housemate has a cat, my sister has a cat and a dog, and three of my four co-workers have multiple pets.  I know that they will all love this!  Thanks for sharing. ;D

To answer DR Joey's question from last night, I LOVED the movie FARGO. I thought the characters were marvelous and memorable, much of it was very funny, but the parts that were suspenseful were very effective. It and OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOU are my favorite Coen Brothers' films.

DR MattH - These are 2 all-time favorite films in our household, too. RE Fargo, being from the upper midwest, I love the accents, and being a long-time fan of Harve Presnell, I love that he has continued to get good roles in his later years.

Is this a slow news day here at haineshisway.com?

Back from the paperback show, which was oke.  The worst thing was that they had the temperature at about twelve degrees, and I finally had to bail it was so damnably cold.  Nick, Pogue, and I then went to Dr. Hoggly Woggly's Texas Barbecue and had delicious foodstuffs such as Texas links, babecue beef and cole slaw, beans, and macaroni salad.

Margaret finished reading the new pages and liked them very much.  But, she had a real problem with one aspect of the ending.  At first, if I was going to address it, it would have required the removal of one short chapter, and about five new pages for the last chapter.  But, in talking through it, I think we came up with a way to have it be not problematic for her without changing anything but about four paragraphs, so that's what I'll do first to see if it works better for her.  I think it will solve her small problem, which I don't entirely disagree with.

Her one other note was about a character earlier in the book, and that note I completely agree with and I'll be adding two or three things to make that character's deal stronger.

Here's the punchline for the rest of the non-obsessed world:

Bk, the Vampire of N'Gobi only had a few listings...the same guy we say who had it at the fair for $450 has it listed on ABE for $500.  There are a couple of non-jacket version going for between 50-70 bucks and Curry has one for $237.  Nice to know that a book I bought in a dj for $45 bucks a few years ago is edging up into middle 3digits (though I still don't think it that rare).

Just off the phone with Margaret.  She loved the little fixes and feels the ending now works perfectly.  It's so funny - she's never quite articulate when she has a problem - but she just knows when something feels wrong.  We have to go round and round and then finally she'll mention a sentence or a phrase and once that happens I know exactly what she's talking about.  The fixes, especially in the final chapter, ended up being a total of about five lines deleted and five new lines to replace them.  I added about two pages overall (with the stuff in the earlier part of the book).  And she was so incredibly right about her feelings, especially the little bit in the final chapter.  The changes altered the mood of it so much for the better, and I can now see that it had to be that way in order to work.

And that is why one has a muse.

Evening all.   I had quite a productive day even though I did manage to take a nap.

I took the dogs for a walk so they could check up  on and leave some Pee-mail.

A guy was hammering on his roof as we walked.  Bear stopped dead in his tracks and you could see him look slowly from the right to the left, looking for the source of the noise.  He then shifted positions so he was right at my side (I never know if this is to better protect me or have me protect him) and we moved very slowly by.  He kept looking back for about two blocks.

I got most of packing for the trip done.  Good thing I have the big suitcase.  It all barely fit.

I made one of those new Banquet Crock Pot dinners, Chicken and dumplings.  I’m here to tell you that it was wonderful.  I am going to have to try some of the other dinners they have in the line.

Thank you for the bird picture, DR Tom.   Very lovely.

DR Jrand54 (and other Indy area DRs) - Unfortunately, House Seats are not Comps.  So the ticket price is the standard ticket price for the orchestra seats.  I may have some 1/2-pricers coming my way, but I really won't know that until I join the tour - and maybe not until we get to Indy.  -It's usually dependent on ticket sales.

Just remember, since it's a Sunday matinee, the ticket price is lower than the weekend evening price.  -If that helps...

And on the tangential discussion of H.G. Welles books...

I've mentioned before that my private, Catholic(!) high school's reading lists were populated with many of the books my friends and counterparts in the public school system were not allowed to read.  "Catcher in the Rye".  "A Brave New World".  "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer".  "Sons and Lovers".  Even Dante's "Inferno" was on some lists due to it's religious inferences.

...And the two most memorable movie viewings during my high school years were watching Fellini's version of "Romeo and Juliet" and "Apocalypse Now" (since it was based on Joseph Conrad's "Red Badge of Courage") with a nun sitting - and half-sleeping - off in the corner of the room.

-Fellini?  That doesn't sound right.  Some DR correct me.  Please!

Part One of "Sunday In New York City With Jose"
or
"How I Ate My Way From 14th and 9th Ave. Up to 168th and Broadway"

:)

I got some good sleep last night.  I didn't really get out of bed - well, the futon - until around 10:30.  I think I'm finally catching up on all the sleep I've lost over the past two weeks, and getting the rest that I've been needing too.

Once I was up and showered, I headed down to Chelsea to meet my friend, John, for brunch at the Chelsea Market.  It was my first time there, although I have had many treats from some of the vendors therein.  I hopped on the A train, transferred over to the B for a stretch, then back on the A.  *The C is out this weekend, so no express service.  I detrained at 14th, and exited out the 16th Street exit, and walked over to 9th Avenue where I met my friend, John.

He gave me a guided tour of the place.  Wonderful place.  It was the former home of the National Biscuit Company (a.k.a. Nabisco), and with all the various bakeries in there, the ghost of it's former incarnation is still present - at least in the smells of butter, vanilla, cinnamon and chocolate wafting through the air.

Before setting down for some grub, we did a quick tour of the various emporiums.  I made some mental notes along the way - lots of places I know I'll be going back to soon.  After a nice stroll the Italian market, we headed to Hale and Hearty Soups for some, what else?, soup.  I had their Chicken and Asparagus Bisque.  Quite good, and the perfect cup to take some of the chill out of the air.  -And the soup crackers are quite addictive too.

After heading we had finished our soups, we sat and played catch up.  Lots of gossip!  We both seem to be in good spots right now.  Yes, there may be an air of tentativeness in the air, but that's part of the life of an "artiste".  I guess.

Then came a stop at Amy's Breads.  Then another one at another bakery where I picked up a something they called a "Chinese Cookie".  Quite delish!  Basically a shortbread cookies with a swirl of cocoa in it.  Not too sweet, a touch of salt, and a great crumb.  And quite a bargain too!  Only $1.25, and that cookie had some heft to it!

Then it was over to the Fat Witch to pick up some brownies.  WOW!!  I had sampled some Fat Witch brownies last week, and I just had to sample some more!  Truly wonderful brownies.  Just right balance of cakey and fudgey.  Some interesting "flavors", but nothing too far out or exotic.  I selected four of them.  And they are still in their wrapping in their box.  I think I'm going to send a few home to Steve tomorrow.  They make a Wicked Witch (Chocolate Mint Brownie) which has become the official brownie for the show, Wicked - even has the show logo on the label.  My personal sampler today consists of one of each of the following: Fat Witch, Fat Witch Walnut, Red Witch and Java Witch.

To decipher those descriptions...

http://www.fatwitch.com

Then we headed over to Eleni's which is known for their exquisite hand-decorated cookies.  They had some nice things on display, but they seemed a little lacking in variety today.  Alas, I just ended up window-shopping there this afternoon.

http://www.elenis.com

After some more sampling at various stalls, we headed back out onto 9th Avenue, into the sun and parted ways.  He headed back down south to his apartment, and I headed back up north...

Why der B has never seen Apocalypse Now all the way through, I don't know.  I got it on laserdisc specifically for him to see the film, he watched part of it and decided it was time for bed.  We never got back to it.

On the other hand, my first lover, who like der B was a Nam vet, was the one who insisted that I see the film when it first came out.  Jason claimed it was the only film that told the story of Nam accurately.

That I've never met two men whose stories of Nam matched is obviously besides the point.  Assuming the fellow talks about what he experienced at all.

Since the sun was shining, I decided to walk at least back up to Times Square.  On the East Side of 9th Avenue - which was the sunny side of the street.

A few blocks later, I was thirsty.  I was hoping to find some local hole-in-the-wall coffee place, but Starbucks fit the bill.  Mocha Frappacino.

I stopped into the Cupcake Cafe to do some more window shopping.  Great little corner shop in Hell's Kitchen.  Wonderful cakes and cupcakes and donuts.  And all the cupcakes are decorated with "flowers" - well, blossoms of buttercream icing.  I shall have to stop in there later to do more than just window shop.  -And it's just a hop, skip and jump from The Clurman - a.k.a. the soon-to-be home of Jewish Thighs On Broadway.

http://www.cupcakecafe.com

I then headed over to the Marriott Marquis to take a breather in the lobby.  They're still in the process of redoing the whole elevator system, but it seems like once the whole system is in place, it should make wait times in their various lobby areas a lot shorter.

I picked up a copy of the New York Times in the gift shop, and settled into a comfy chair in the 8th Floor Lobby.  Arts & Leisure.  Travel.  The Magazine.  Weekly Style.  Real Estate.  ;)

And then I walked around Times Square for a bit just passing the time sort of aimlessly.  I did eventually decide to wait for Good Vibrations to let out so that I could catch Tituss Burgess at the stage door.  -We had worked together a few years ago, and he's one of the few things that's been praised in this production.  I did catch him coming out of the stage door, and it we greeted each other with a big hug.  We chatted for a bit, then he remembered he had signed up for a post-show chat, so we headed back into the O'Neill.  I headed back with him so that I could, hopefully, catch up with the Musical Director and Conductor, Sue Drauss.  Sue was on the Mamma Mia! tour for a while, and we met two years ago, the first time the show came through Richmond.  -I got her hooked on my Green Tea Poundcake, and my favorite housewares store in Richmond.  Well, I did catch her on her way back up to her dressing room.  Another big hug.  -And she told me she had just been thinking about the Green Tea Poundcake!  -I may have to do some baking when I get back to Richmond.

After the mini-reunions, I headed over to Dale And Thomas Popcorn - formerly known as Popcorn, Indiana.  "New Name.  Same Great Popcorn."  I decided to give their new "Drizzle Corn" a try.  -Popcorn drizzled with White and Milk Chocolate.  Very good.  And I still have half a bag left too!

http://www.DaleandThomasPopcorn.com
*And they're offering free (just pay S&H) popcorn this month too!

The sun was beginning to set by this time.  The chill was returning to the air, as well as a brisk breeze or two.  But I continued my walk up Broadway...

It's been a slow day around these parts. My telephone has not rung a single time, and I have managed to get groceries shopped for; spaghetti cooked and eaten; laundry washed, dried, folded, and put away; tax information readied for the accountant on Wednesday, and two movies watched plus three network shows in high definition and DEADWOOD recorded for viewing tomorrow (along with NUMBERS which was finally shown in the dead of night last evening).

We also had another of those glorious pseudo-spring days, but it may be the last for awhile. The long range forecasts don't put the highs out of the 40s-low 50s for the next five days.

Part Three of "Sunday In New York City With Jose"
or
"How I Ate My Way From 14th and 9th Ave. Up to 168th and Broadway"

After leaving the Times Square area, I followed Broadway over the left as Broadway does goes toward the left once it reaches 59th Street if you're heading uptown.  This brought me back to the Time Warner Center.

I did not go down to Whole Foods this time!  -Today was my first "Whole Foods Free Day" since I've been here!

Instead, I took the escalators up to the third floor, and just walked around each floor checking out the shops and soon-to-be-opened restaurants.  I don't know how I missed them the first time I was there, but the views of Central Park South from the upper balconies are spectacular.  I spent a few minutes watching the sun finish setting on Columbus Circle.  After a brief stop at the Aveda salon - I needed shampoo - I headed back down to the street level.

-I purposely avoided the Williams-Sonoma on the ground floor.  It's the largest one on the East Coast - even carries some of their "catalog only" wares and foodstuffs.  One day... -When I have some "mad cash"...

As I walked back outside, I took the remaining half of the Nine Grain Bagel (yes, probably not really a bagel-bagel since it had nine grains, but...) that I had bought to accompany my soup down at the Chelsea Market - and knoshed on that as I continued my walk up Broadway.

Part Four of "Sunday In New York City With Jose"
or
"How I Ate My Way From 14th and 9th Ave. Up to 168th and Broadway"

The sun had truly set by this time, and the lights of the various signs up and down Broadway lit the rest of my journey.

I almost stopped to see a movie, "Millions", but decided that tomorrow will be my movie day.  There's also a French Film Festival at Lincoln Center this week, so I may be spending some time there this week too.  After I walked past the Loew's Theatres, I noticed a man on the sidewalk handing out flyers...

"Beard Papa's Fresh 'n Natural Cream Puffs"

:D

These have been discussed here on HHW before.  I believe DR Hisaka was the first one to bring them up.  Well, there was no line, and the young gentleman handing out the flyers held open the door for me, so...

The best $1.25 I've spent so far!  *Well, I spent $2.70 since I bought one Original and one Green Tea flavored one.  I didn't sample the Original one until I was back at the apartment, but it was well worth the wait.  Sooooo good.  -And even though they advise eating them immediately, it wasn't too bad after sitting for about two hours.  The puff/crust still had a nice flaky crunch to it, and the vanilla filling was finger licking good.  Literally, since it was generously filled with the stuff.  I shall have the Green Tea one in a little bit...

http://www.muginohousa.com

Well, it was getting close to 7:00 by this time, and I wanted something substantial.  Well, since I was in the 80's by this time... Artie's!  -One of the delis of choice for some of the DRs of this site.

This was my first time at Artie's.  I seemed to have arrived at the end the dinner rush.  My waitress was a bit frazzled, but in a good-natured way.  For my first meal there, I opted for the Potato Pancakes - I like them with both applesauce and sour cream.  Glatt Kosher I am not.  And a Chopped Liver sandwich.  The latkes were very good, and since the waitress kept missing "them" each time they came up, I ended up with some very "fresh", right out of the oil potato pancaked.  Very good.

*I noticed that a young woman sitting at the table across from me had ordered them too.  However, she only at the inside of them.  She sort of peeled off the crunchy, crispy crust, and just ate the softer inside.  ???  -Just order mashed potatoes why don't you?

The Chopped Liver sandwich had to be one of the best Chopped Liver Sandwiches.  Yes, I know, Chopped Liver may not be to everyone's liking, but like it I do.  Good rye bread too.  -And pickles and cole slaw...

http://www.arties.com

I then headed back out onto Broadway... And continued trekking northward...

Part Five of "Sunday In New York City With Jose"
or
"How I Ate My Way From 14th and 9th Ave. Up to 168th and Broadway"

Well, the cold had gotten colder, and the breezes had gotten breezier...

I continued walking up Broadway checking out various menus along the way.  West Side Diner.  Time Cafe.  Aix.  Some high-end sushi place.  Etc., etc., etc...

I finally headed into the subway at 93rd Street, and took the 1 train back up to 168th Street.

After walking back to apartment, I sorted out my various wares from the day.  -That's when I finally tried the totally dee-lish Beard Papa Cream Puff.  And licked my fingers.

-Wasn't there something about licking on this site in the past few days?

;)

Then I went ahead and bundled myself back up, and headed to Jou Jou, a local coffee house just across the street from the Presbyterian Hospital.  I ordered a large coffee, and took a seat at one of their tables up front.  They have free, high speed, wireless internet access.  So, I've been reading and posting from here/there for the past two hours or so.

Their website is http://www.joujoucafe.com - at least according to their business card, but I'm not able to bring it up right now.  Hmm...

-The dessert case behind me is filled with some amazing goodies.  So far, so good.  I am resisting.

And that finishes my ambulatory/culinary adventure for today.  For now.

-Remember, I still have the Green Tea Flavored Cream Puff in the fridge back at the apartment...

;)

Sweet honey in the horn! Rodzinski is back on the Ice Coast.

Thanks to all who attempted to find my ugly mug on the tube. Jed was quite correct as to where I was. What a good eye! I actually wasn't wearing the glasses, which may have thrown some folks off. I did hold up BENJAMIN KRITZER several times during the first half. I had to pretend I was using it as a writing surface, so I'm not sure how visible it was. I had been spooked by the omnipresent Staple's Center security. The Stanford Tree mascot was ejected from the premises on Friday night!!

I did manage a swift trip to a Shakey's on Sunset Blvd. It was really something. The mojo potatoes were perhaps not as large as I remembered, but every other aspect of that buffet had not change one iota. Maybe you can't go home again, but you can go to Shakey's again.

MBarnum, due to reading your movie magazine, I purchased the DVD set of ROGER RAMJET cartoons, so I am excited about that.

BK - DR Hisaka suggested Tumi luggage for your carry-on.  Tumi makes wonderful luggage.  It is a bit pricey, but worth it.  The quality is evident in the look of their pieces down to the construction of their pieces.  Probably the last carry-on you'll ever have to buy.  But, be forewarned, you may experience some sticker shock.

There are Tumi stores in the Beverly Center and the Century City Shopping Center.  There line of luggage is also carried in many Luggage Shops.

http://www.tumi.com

If you don't want to go the Tumi route, just go to any mall, and I'm sure you'll find some luggage store.  Macy's, Dillard's, Hecht's, etc., also carry luggage.  And they're usually on sale too.

Do you already have a separate bag for your laptop?  If not, the Apple Store does carry some larger bags that will store both clothes and your PowerBook.

Oh, and I've always liked the bags/luggage that L. L. Bean carries.  Alas, their retail stores are only located on the East Coast so far - and only five of them.  -Two in the DC area!  But there's always mail/internet order...

Two ferocious little puppies sprang from under the bed and pinned me down, swatting at my face with their sharp-clawed little paws and trying to decide whether 'twas more fun to chew me or just lick me to death!

On the plane, the movie was FINDING NEVERLAND, which I had mildly wanted to see, recommended as it was, by the Gal.

Well, it was okay. I mean, after about 20 minutes, it is all there. The wife is cold and unpleasant. The kids are fun and intelligent, except for the morose one who needs to learn to BELIEVE. The kids' mom is sick. Her mom is The Villain...

Generally well-acted, especially by the youngsters, who tear up nicely,  Is Dustin Hoffman supposed to be English or not? I dunno. All told, just okay, but needed more bite to it.

OOhhh... Just read this on the AP Wire:

Mario Vazquez Drops Out of 'American Idol'[/i]

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Fan favorite Mario Vazquez withdrew from "American Idol" on Sunday, and producers called in the son of a baseball Hall of Famer as backup.

Vazquez, 27, cited "personal reasons" for his withdrawal and no other details were available, Fox announced in a statement. The New York City singer, who works with emerging musical artists, had been picked by many fans and three fellow finalists as a favorite to win the competition.

Fox bumped Nikko Smith, the son of baseball great Ozzie Smith, into Vazquez's spot because Smith got more votes than Travis Tucker when both were voted off Wednesday, the network said.

Smith, 22, of St. Louis, Mo., said in an interview before Sunday's announcement that he wasn't surprised to have been voted off.

"I wasn't as disappointed as people thought I would be because I've made it so far," he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I'm happy to get all that exposure. Millions and millions of people watch the show, and hopefully somebody saw me and liked what they saw."

Now, viewers of the No. 1-rated series will get a chance to reconsider their votes as Smith and the other 11 finalists perform next Tuesday.

Vazquez is not the first to leave "Idol" unexpectedly, though few have done so willingly. Last year, George Huff was called back to Los Angeles when contestant Donnie Williams was cited for DUI. And in 2003, three contestants were dropped by Fox, two for failing to disclose arrest records and another for posing on an adult-oriented Web site.

*********

I hope all is well with him and his family.

-And I guess I really hadn't read that much about the finalists.  I didn't realize Nikko was the son of Ozzie Smith.

And there's also the news about Christina Applegate breaking her foot during the performance of Sweet Charity over the weekend.  Her understudy took over for her in Chicago.  However, for the show's Boston run this week and next, the Weisslers are flying in Charlotte d'Amboise.

Hmmm...

-Frankly, I'd like to see Ms. d'Amboise do the role more than Ms. Applegate.  At least I know Charlotte can Sing.  And Dance.

Epilogue to "Sunday In New York With Jose"...

While walking around the city the past few days, I've had this feeling of comfortability.  Of ease.  Of familiarity.

:)

I'm not feeling like a tourist this time round.  And I don't mean "tourist" in the bad sense.  What I do mean is...  I have no real want/need to see a show this time round.  I didn't even bring my camera with me, and I'm not really regretting "forgetting" to pack it.  And since I've finally figured out the whole Express deal with the subway trains...

Yes, I'm still discovering new things about the city, but I don't feel like an outsider.  -Heck, there have been some articles about how even so-called, self-proclaimed "jaded New Yorkers" are still discovering all the riches - literal and figurative - in the new Time Warner Center.  *I shall have to splurge on a cocktail in the 35th Floor lounge of the Mandarin Oriental.  Apparently, the view is spectacular.

I also have a lot of friends up here.  "Far" friends, and close friends.  Moreso than I have back in Richmond and DC actually.  I did have one "down" moment today as I was walking up 9th Avenue - it would have been nice to have Steve by my side since the past few times I've been up here in the city, he's been with me.  -Well, now, I have new things to show him the next time he comes up for a visit.

Where was I?  Ah, yes...  Liaisons...

???  Um.... No...

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm truly getting into that "New York State of Mind".  Manhattan is starting to feel like home.

:)

Yeah, I-80. I've driven that entire thing, and it doesn't really go through anywhere great. It goes around some places, but usually not close enough to see them. Interstates just ain't the way to learn about the country.

Hey, Jose, during an audition, do you find you give points to a person for choosing something really rare or unique to perform? Assuming, of course, that they do it justice.

Hmmm.... Looks like it's just you and me, DR Rodzinski...

Jou Jou Cafe stays open until 4:30AM... Or there Tipico up at 180th, I believe. Open 24 hours.  Some yucca con chicarron would really hit the spot right now!

If you start walking south, and I start walking north...

-Sheesh, I still don't like word problems.

And I always do a major double take and direction check when I see those signs for Toledo on both "ends" of the interstate.  Always causes me to wonder, "Did I turn around at the last rest area?"

As for auditions.  Yes.  But as I always counsel singers, sometimes something is "rare or unique" for a reason.  It's bad a song.

OK...  Well, all the walking and eating and walking and eating has caught up with me...  And since I plan to do some more walking... and eating tomorrow...  -Actually, I'm hoping to go for a run in the morning, check out the Cloisters, Triton Park area.  And I'm hoping not to eat too much tomorrow.  Today was truly a splurge day both dietetically and financially, so...  And since I did buy some groceries the other day, it would be a good thing to eat them.

Off to the land of the Wussburgers...

Goodnight.

So tired.  I shall post the notes at midnight and go directly to bed so I can try to get close to eight hours.

Yes, yes they are!  And Gonzaga as a #3, too.  Not a bad day to be a NW sports fan (we get about one good day every five years or so).

I think you need to have driven through Illinois to understand what a boring drive really is.

I have only two words to say...

North Dakota.

Or I-90 across the eastern half of my very own Washington state.  From my little town of Ellensburg (pretty much dead center of the state) to the west, the scenery is lovely.  From here to the Idaho border... dreadfully boring.
