Title: TUMI OR NOT TUMI
Post by: bk on March 15, 2005, 11:59:44 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you are in the know about everything, notes-wise, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home sporting their new Tumi luggage.

And the word of the day is: AGGRANDIZE!

Well, since only Jed is here, and since he only likes to post when he has something to say, perhaps I'll just toddle off to the bedroom environment for my beauty sleep.

And even though she rarely gets online and visits, may we all just put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, may we all just break out the cheese slices and ham chunks, may we all dance the Hora and Pony, for today is the birthday of my very own darling daughter, Jennifer.  So, let's all give darling daughter Jennifer a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer, shall we?  On the count of three: One, two, three - HAPPY BIRTHDAY DARLING DAUGHTER JENNIFER!!!

And a happy birthday to Clem, whomever Clem is.

I don't know if it's due to H/K Vibes but Anthony has been cast in not one but two shows. He's doing a showcase here in New York in May and then the day after the show closes he goes to Roanoke Virginia to play Hysterium in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Hooray! He's working! Jose, did your friend Nick get cast as Hero?

Anthony is auditioning today for Damn Yankees which will be done in Fort Atkins Wisconsin.

I'm seeing the revival of Glass Menagerie tonight with Jessica Lange and the recently added Christian Slater.

No questions for the day at this point.

JENNIFER
1971
Funny how so many moments slip away
The things I meant to say
I should have said them all before today
To Jennifer, Jennifer.

Funny how you'd smile and always understand
When I got out of hand
Have you forgotten all the fun we planned
My Jennifer, Jennifer?

And now you think you're getting in my way,
And all I want to do is find you, and remind you
Even if I may become a star someday
I'd give it all away
If it meant that I couldn't always stay
With Jennifer, Jennifer.

So now I'm begging you to come back home
You'll never have to be alone
We'll be as we were
My Jennifer.

DRJOSE - I think you will be happier and safer at the Residence Inn.  It is a bit newer and not as big - it is close to the canal which should be a nice walking area for you if the weather is nice.  Also the zoo and the IMAX theatre are within walking distance.

There are NO grocery stores downtown, so the kitchen won't help you much.  BUT in the Government Center (where I used to work) there is a cafeteria that serves breakfast until 10 am - if breakfast isn't included - and has a lunch service as well.  There is a Subway and a KFC in the cafeteria.  It is GOVERNMENT cafeteria food - but it is less expensive than restaurant food.  Just go into to shorter of the two government buildings, go down the escalator to the basement and follow the crowd.

JR, I have fond memories of Glass Menagerie also. It's one of the first plays I remember reading. I was so moved by it and felt a connection to Williams and his story. I did Tom's last monologue in Junior High in my speech and drama class. I think it remains my favorite Tennessee Williams piece.

I got so caught up in the logistics of a birthday greeting that I nearly let my bath water run over.  Good morning, all!

DRBen, send my congrats to Baxter!  I'm very happy for him.

Dear Friend BK, the 2 CDs are burned, so if I hear from anyone, I'm ready.

DRGinny, I think Sarah could never get through the score to FUNNY GIRL; I worked on her Boston Pops broadcast, and she's lovely, but no great singer.
As for Nicky, all baritone roles these days, whether or not I think he's qualified enough as a legit baritone, seem to be offered to Brian Stokes Mitchell, whom I liked in JELLY'S LAST JAM and RAGTIME.  I thought his acting in KISS ME, KATE was excellent and his singing kept me wishing Alfred Drake would step in.

Looks like folks out there do have some taste. Kirstie Alley's new improv-sitcom FAT ACTRESS on Showtime scored almost 800,000 viewers in its first episode. (That doesn't sound like many viewers, but it's big for a Showtime audience.)

Those numbers fell over 70% with this week's episode to something around 250,000 viewers.

On the other hand, the HBO western DEADWOOD's second episode saw a 22% rise in viewership. Hooray!

I'm on much earlier than usual because I have my tax appointment this morning during the time I would normally be here. I always hate this as one is never sure whether he's going to have to dip deeper in his pocket for additional monies for Uncle Sam or not.

If the news is not too bad, I'd like to buy a new TV in the coming weeks, but that all depends on what I find out this morning.

In any case...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DD JENNIFER!

DR JRand and Ginny - Thanks for the hotel info.  Like I said it was more or less a toss up for me.  I like Omni Hotels - The Omni Berkshire Place here in Manhattan has to be one of my all time favorite splurge hotel stays (remember when SNL would put all their guests up there), but Residence Inns are nice too - and since I can still earn Marriott points for staying there this time...  Residence Inn it shall be.  -And the pics of the hotel on the Canal look pretty cool too!

And that's all for now...  I'll check back "in between"...

'Lord of the Rings' coming to the stage
By Press-Telegram wire services

Tuesday, March 15, 2005 - A much-anticipated musical based on "The Lord of the Rings' will have its world premiere in Toronto next year, the show's producers announced Tuesday.

The $22 million show will open in March 2006 at the Princess of Wales Theatre with a largely Canadian cast, producer Kevin Wallace said.

Wallace had hoped to open the show in London in the fall, but no theater large enough to accommodate the technically complex production was available. The musical is now slated to open in London in autumn 2006.

Published 50 years ago, J.R.R. Tolkien's mystical adventure trilogy has been discovered by a new generation through Peter Jackson's Academy Award-winning trio of films, which have grossed more than $3 billion around the world.

The three-hour stage adaptation will feature book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna ("Lautrec," "Maddie') and Matthew Warchus (Tony nominated director of "Art' and "True West'), and music by A.R. Rahman ("Bombay Dreams') and Finnish group Varttina with Christopher Nightingale.

Warchus said the show, which has a cast of 50, would combine words, music, physical theater and spectacle to create a production in which the audience is "actually plunged into the events as they happen."

"We have not attempted to pull the novel towards the standard conventions of musical theater, but rather to expand those conventions so that they will accommodate Tolkien's material," he said.

My question for ASK BK day.  What are some of the BEST motion picture coming attractions you have ever seen (even if the actual picture didn't turn out to be so hot)?

My favorite trailer is Alfred Hitchcock's from Psycho - absolutely brilliant.  As is The Birds.  As a kid, I loved all movie trailers, and very few of the actual movies ever lived up to them.

Well, if you loved Singin' in the Rain, The Band Wagon should send you reeling.  My comments about SITR are all based on the several Technicolor prints, both 16mm and 35mm, that I've owned.  While the DVD is certainly sharp and pretty-looking, the colors are off.  This can't be disputed if one has seen an IB Tech print of the film.  The DVD leans to the brownish hues and the skin tones are flat.  The sharpness is great and it's been cleaned up beautifully, and the color certainly could have been tweaked in the telecine if someone had had a real IB Tech 35 to look at.

I agree about buying DVDs when they're released. Unless you're certain it's something that's going to be around for the long haul, I grab them when I can (and can find it at a reasonable price). But even popular items like the James Bond films go out of print after awhile. Disney, of course, has been a master at having their items available for certain periods, withdrawing them, and re-releasing them later with a new publicity campaign. After CINDERELLA comes out this fall (and SONG OF THE SOUTH next year), they will have exhausted their inventory of animation classics. So, they're planning another release (but a BIG Platinum edition this time) of LADY AND THE TRAMP in 2006. Expect THE LITTLE MERMAID to get a deluxe package too next year or the year after.

I was really excited by the trailer for FIGHT CLUB. But the movie did not live up.

Happy Birthday to Jennifer. Bobby Sherman does a nice version of that song, "Jennifer", referenced earlier. He sang it to his kid sister on the short-lived musical show "Getting Together".

I heard the same thing about Mr Seacrest and many others.

My thoughts on Idol last night:

My favorite was Nadia, followed by Constantine and Anthony.

I love Anwar, but he was a bit boring.

I am not sure if they will do bottom 3.  But I think Lindsey, Vonzell and Mikalah will be going soon.  Same for Scott and Nikko.

Bottom 3 this week though I think will be Lindsey, Mikalah, and maybe Nikko.  I'm really not sure how much more popular the guys are than the girls.  So it's hard to say.

But Bo, Anwar, Constantine, Nadia, and Carrie should be safe.

On the "Getting Together" LP, Bobby sings a song to his sister called "Where Did That Little Girl Go?" which later was appropriated for the SNOOPY musical as "Where Did that Little Dog Go?"

Some personal thoughts on the Death Penalty
(Prompted by coverage of Peterson sentencing)

Much of this argument depends on distinguishing between "can" and "should", and also addressing the real world as opposed to an idealized world.

First: I offer no argument against society's right to apply the death penalty to responsible adults.

Second: I argue the efficacy of the death penalty. The death penalty may be a satisfying form of extracting vengeance, but I do not believe it plays any reasonable role in crime prevention. Many people contemplating capital offenses do not, for whatever reason, care about the consequences, or are operating on the assumption they will not be caught. I just can't imagine someone thinking to himself, "I'd accept life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, but if the death penalty is on the table, I will refrain from this action". If such a penalty is to have any chance of being a deterrent, it must be prompt, very public, shameful, and terrifying to behold. Picture postcards of the last moments to perpetuate the shame for history would help. In the USA of today, and for the foreseeable future, the execution of the condemned will not be prompt, will not be very public, and will avoid, where possible, excessive pain or public disgrace of family.

Third: The cost to society of attempting to utilize the death penalty over and above the cost of settling for life without parole is humungous. The entire process of jury selection is complicated and the automatic review processes interminable and pricey.

(As an aside, I wonder how I would be treated as a prospective juror? I would find a defendant guilty if offered proof beyond "reasonable doubt", but would not consider voting for death without proof "with a certainty" - a higher standard permitted by the law.)

(I asked the question "Do you believe in the Death Penalty, my answer would have to be "I believe in society's right to apply the death penalty, but I do not support society exercising that right!")

Fourth: As a practical matter, I would take the Death Penalty off the table except for persons already serving a life sentence who are convicted of a subsequent capital offense. I would also offer persons condemned to life without parole the option of electing a painless suicide administered by the government.)

In conclusion: Do I think the government has the right to apply the death penalty - yes. Do I think the government ought to apply the Death Penalty - no. (This position also gives me cover to avoid discussing the much more complicated issue of death for the mentally retarded and juveniles.)

Now, my experience with can/should arguments is that they satisfy no one, and anger everybody. Those opposed to the Death Penalty will bemoan my reluctance to campaign against it, those who support the penalty will bemoan my wimping out on vigorously pursuing it.

I have been constantly frustrated in arguments with uber-fiscal conservatives - those who refuse to support sate funded abortions, pre-natal care for the indigent (regardless of citizenship status), and state funded immunization programs. In my mind, these all fall into the "state does not HAVE to, but the state OUGHT to category. (I have some sympathy for pro-life folks opposing state funded abortions, but still think majority vote should apply in this case.) All of the programs mentioned get high grades on any cost-benefit analysis.

Awaiting my hate mail,

Der Brucer

Many of the issues you talk about DR derBrucer have NOT been legislated, they have been adjudicated - and the MAJORITY view has not been counted by vote.  We are at the mercy of the courts, where proponents of MANY views take their arguments rather than to the PEOPLE.

Mostly what we hear on both sides of Hot Button issues are the LOUDEST views.

Good morning all
Well, I slept like a rock for a good six or seven hours last night.  Not entirely sure what time I fell asleep, thanks to the NyQuil I took that did its usual number on my system and had me falling asleep upright in a chair.
With my sleep properly caught up on, I'm beginning to wonder if this "cold" isn't actually allergies instead.  I shall pick up some Claritin today and see if it helps more than the cold pills.  Without the lack-of-sleep factor, I'm realizing that the symptoms are more allergy-like than cold-like.  We'll see if Claritin helps.

No questions yet for Ask BK Day..I'll have to think on it.

TAR topic -

I was also sorry to see the girls go last night.  Yeah, they made a dumb mistake, which can easily cost you the game in that kind of a race, but I really liked them anyway.

Thanks to dear reader Pogue for mentioning the Tumi wallet.  I have just purchased one - so much slimmer and compact than the one I've been using.  And not that expensive, either.

I went looking for coats but, as you might imagine, it's hard to find anything in California that's appropriate for chilly weather.  After four or five stores I was ready to call it quits, but on a whim I went into Banana Republic to see if they had anything.  They had a really nice beige suede coat - a bit longer than I'm used to, but very warm.  It was three hundred bucks, which I didn't think was outrageous, and it fit, so I took it.  The salesperson rang it up and to both his and my surprise it was on sale for eighty bucks.  Hoo and ray, was all I could say.  Even if I don't end up using it a lot, for eighty bucks it's a helluva coat.

Rob's quitting the roadblock was a good move, but I hope it doesn't happen all the time...that would get a bit boring if nobody completes the roadblocks.

I was sad about the duo who lost also...however, I don't think they deserved, as anyone can make a mistake. And what a frustrating mistake it was!

I am kind of not caring for Rob and Amber, personality wise...and that really is how I pick my favorites on this show...although I guess I should go by skill...

You give a lot to think about.  There are some cases so henious where I think the death penalty should be applied swiftly and in kind.... I, for one who be right there to see Susan Smith tied to a chair and the room slowly flooded so she could experience some of the terror she put her poor little boys through, heck, I'd flood the room myself...

On the other hand, when there are no eye witnesses and no confession I would be opposed to the death penalty in spite of a guilty verdict.

I agree it probably doesn't at as a deterrent the first time (of course, we can never know for certain how many people have restrained themselves from murder, not for moral reasons but for fear of the punishment) but it sure keeps the perpatrator from repeating the act.

It drives me crazy when I hear of a murder suspect  who was just released after "serving three years on a manslaughter conviction"

My problem with the  right side of the political spectrum (prepare for super generalities now)  is that they allow business to pollute the air, the water, cut down trees and otherwise destroy the environment, remove as many of the safeguards for the common man as possible, talk about smaller government,(meaning hands off big business) and yet want to legislate what goes on in my bedroom and my doctor's office

I did not intend anything in my arguments to suggest who/what brought about the reality. Inasmuch as we live in a constitutional system that regulary plays "majority rule" against "judicial restraint (or activism, if you must) the real world I am addressing is unlikely to be significantly altered in the near future. For example, the US born children of illegal aliens will continue to be US citizens and be ellible for medical benefits - S%@T, the feds can't even manage to muster the resources to deport convicted illegal felons who are being released from prison!

That being said, have you issue with the arguments I proferred ?

Hey, you confessed to generalities and didn't confuse "right side" with all of a particular party. On the issues you address I suspect we would generally agree, and so would the politicans whose campaigns I have supported. (My candidates are pro-choice, have Sierra Club endorsements, support gay rights and reasonable gun control, and urge removing federal barriers to embryonic stem cell research.)

Remember, the (fantasy) world I live in has a Republican party that supports limited government, social responsiblity for the care of the less fortunate (including animals and the planet), and indivdual responsibily to address personal, private conduct and ones' realtionship, or not, with the Divine.

AMAZING RACE:

I do wish the girls who lost had stuck around.  As I said they showed a lot of promise.  But DR MBarnum, I disagree with your comments that "anyone can make that mistake".  This is a race.  They had maps.  There were signs posted all over the highways.  To drive 2.5 hours in the wrong direction is not a small mistake.

The mother/son got lost.  And it cost them.  But they weren't driving for hours past where they were supposed to go.

To me the girls made a huge mistake.  And in this game, people often lose by bad luck.  I'd rather see people lose for making really bad mistakes.  It's at least justified!

Hmmm, I totally love ROMBER.  I love their attitude. I love watching them.  They are funny, and Rob is so cunning and skilled. He was born to do this! :)

DR MBarnum, I see you always root for the nice/sweet teams.  My sister-in-law is the same. I always know which teams she will like.  Although as of last week she actually really liked Rob/Amber. So we shall see.

Anyhow, I will be interested to see what this BIG thing is next week that Rob does. Any ideas?

Oy, such a day!  It's subway hell.  Something involving the power canceled the East Side subways today, so anyone traveling this morning on the East Side took a bus to the West Side to use the subways.  Of course we passengers are never told anything, so I pulled my usual traffic pattern:  local to 72nd Street, express to 14th.  Had I been aware of the madness and congestion, I would have stayed on the local, but I got off the local and watched as lined-up express subways packed to the gills kept pulling into the station and more passengers tried to wedge their bodies into them.  When I finally got into a train car, it moved at a snail's pace to 42nd Street where all the madness stopped.  My usual 15 minute trip took me 45 minutes today.  It was equally crazy getting home this afternoon.

Question for BK:  If there is a movie you have been longing to see, will you accept watching it in less-than-ideal format? Or are your visual tastes refined to the point that you would just not watch a film rather than see it at less than its best?

I spent a lively afternoon with THE INCREDIBLES, and that certainly describes the movie. Terrifically entertaining from beginning to end, greatg music score, and sound that is second to none. My subwoofer didn't stop for the entire last half of the movie. Wow! And once they got to that island, well, the color was just eye popping.

My office staff went out to lunch....The Cuckoo's Nest down on 4th Street here in Oakland in the middle of all the loft complexes built a few years ago.

I had a wonderful concoction called Chicken Chili Lime...two nice pieces of chicken breast in a sauce of delectable piquance.  Some fantatastic sauteed vegetables and mashed potatoes (smashed taters for our southern and mid-western readers) with a sprinkle of fresh herbs.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....gustatorial delight!

What was the first MGM musical in Cinemascope?  Was it ROSE MARIE?

Since we keep getting ads for things we discuss, let me tell you what I have been seeking.  I have a 1995 Ford Taurus station wagon, which was until very recently  when DH forgot and left it on the roof, equipped witht a "cargo cover", which looks rather like a large window shade, it woud pull out and clip in to two little sockets in the back and cover up whatever was in the cargo portion of the stationwagon.

Well since it has dissapeared we have been unable to find a replacement at any of the local junkyards, salvage facilities, online, ebay, anywhere.

But if you  all will join me in  a discussion of   1995 Ford Taurus retractable cargo covers , color grey, perhaps the powers that be will give us an ad for a place where I can get one!!! ;D

The Bobby Sherman LPs are, while cheesily arranged, generally very entertaining albums.
On the "Getting Together" LP, Bobby sings a song to his sister called "Where Did That Little Girl Go?" which later was appropriated for the SNOOPY musical as "Where Did that Little Dog Go?"
It would have been rude and inappropriate for Bobby to have used the "Little Dog" lyric in re his sister, of course.

Good Afternoon!

Back from the final dress tech.  We started around 1:30, and were done just a little past 3:00.  :)

So, I headed over to the Edison Hotel where I had a nice lunch/dinner in the Edison Cafe (a.k.a. The Polish Tea Room).  I had their Beef Brisket Special... I guess the quantity of the serving was meant to compensate for the general blandness of the serving.  Ah, well...  -Oh, but the Matzoh Ball soup was pretty good.  And, strangely enough, this was the first time that the vegetable were NOT overcooked!  So that was a nice surprise.

Then I hopped onto the A Train, and now I'm just taking a little breather back here at the apartment.  I'm listening to Sunday In The Park With George - it's sort of my opening night ritual.  *The other usual part of my "ritual" is doing some major house-cleaning - ??? - but that shall have to wait until tomorrow... or not..  ;)

And I'm a-reading and a-posting...

TRAILERS

The original teaser for Star Wars certainly grabbed my attention.  It's strange, remembering now how different it looked from everything I'd seen before.

Far beyond that was the way Disney introduced The Lion King.  Putting the opening sequence up there on the screen, without any narration telling the audience what they were about to see, just blew me away.  (Der Brucer and I happened to see this at Walt Disney World, as part of their animation studio tour.  Talk about the right place at the right time!)

"The Band Wagon" was filmed in Academy ratio.

I don't know if this has been asked and answered before (and I didn't search to find out), but where did the term "Academy ratio" come from?  I know it's the equivalent of what is now called "full screen," but when the widescreen processes (Cinerama, Cinemascope, etc.) started to be developed, did they, from the beginning, refer to the previous version as "Academy ratio?"

Denise is also on what I would say is the worst episode of the BRADY BUNCH, when Peter discovers a kid who looks just like him, and due to a mix-up he (Peter) ends up running between both girls in different rooms of the Brady manse. At this point, Denise was a late teenager and bookish with big glasses, but kinda cute.

Question for Larry Moore:

I was wondering why dance music in musicals are usually rearrangements of songs,

For example: The Wedding Dance in Brigadoon is Go Home With Bonnie Jean

and not originally music compositions?

Also did Gene Kelly really choreograph all the dances in Brigadoon. The deleted Sword Dance looks very much like Agnes De Mille.

I knew that was Denise Nicckerson. Just didn't get on soon enough. Also was in Dark Shadows, The musical of Lolita in Boston and was in in Zero to Sixty where she was "introduced". This was actually her last film after appearing in Willy Wonka. Smile, The Neon Ceiling, Search For Tomorrow etc. I asked Darren McGavin who was visiting my film school in Montreal about why she was credited like that after being around for awhile. He said that she was hoping that the movie would help her start work as an adult. The film bomb and she gave up acting.

The jury hung on one count of Solicitation to Commit Murder, so they could retry him on that count. Haven't heard if they will or not.

Nevermind, the judge dismissed the last count. He is free and clear

LOS ANGELES — The jury in the Robert Blake (search) murder trial has found the "Baretta" actor not guilty of the 2001 murder of his wife, Bonny Lee Bakley (search).
Jurors also acquitted Blake of one charge that Blake solicited murder, but deadlocked on a second solicitation charge. The jury voted 11-1 in favor of acquittal and the judge dismissed the count.

Report: Jewish Extremists Plan to Seize Temple MountWednesday, March 16, 2005

JERUSALEM  — Jewish extremists plan to take over a hotly disputed holy site in the Old City of Jerusalem in an attempt to sabotage Israel's planned withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and part of the West Bank in the summer, an Israeli TV station reported Wednesday.
Channel Two TV showed video of a meeting of extremists, including rabbis, where they discussed flooding the site — known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary— with Jews, drawing the army and police, apparently to prevent them from evacuating settlers from Gaza and the northern West Bank.

The report said such a move might ignite violence throughout the Middle East. The site is the most hotly contested in the region — where the Al Aqsa Mosque, marking the site where the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven, is built atop the ruins of the biblical Jewish Temples.

"We must bring 100,000 people to the Temple Mount," said a rabbi identified as Chen Eliahu in video of the meeting, which Channel Two said took place in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. Then, he said, the army and police would be forced to abandon plans to remove settlers from Gaza and the West Bank in order to send soldiers and police to the holy site.

Police have warned of attempts to attack the Jerusalem site as a way of sabotaging the pullout, including the possibility of extremists firing a rocket at the mosque, which is clearly visible from the Jewish Quarter of the Old City.

My question for Ask BK Day:

Are we going to have live chats again?

DRs DerBrucer and SWoody: I am glad you live across the country from me, because you have the cutest pups and I'm afraid I'd take one. I might have taken Coco or CiCi. I had a puppy many years ago -- he died in three days from distemper, so I always got adults after that. For now I am content to borrow DR Kerry's Sugar.

Happy Birthday to BK's Jennifer.

And congratulations to Anthony.

And good vibes to Ann.

DR Danise, how is mom?

Didn't Denise Nickerson ultimately play Lolita in the musical of Lolita?  I think so.

Rodzinski, if I really want to see a film that's important for me to see, I'll see it however I have to.

Very frustrating business - my NY assistant Jonathan is supposed to be helping with Friday, but, after one e-mail exchange, he hasn't responded to any other e-mails, which means dear stupid inept AOL is most likely delivering all my e-mails into his spam folder.   I left a message on his cell, which turned out not to be his number anymore - so, I have no way of getting ahold of him.  I called the house where his folks live, but the man who answered (presumably his father), doesn't know his own son's cell phone or apartment number - given his rudeness, I'd say the gentleman  has some issues to work through.

DRMichael Shayne, the dance music arranger is usually on a contract that music by the composer in the show has to be used and adapted; in the case of the big ballets in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS and BRIGADOON, I believe Trude charted out the dance rhythms DeMille wanted and the composers wrote totally new music.  In MY FAIR LADY, where Trude was also helping with the underscoring, I think she's responsible for that beautiful cut section of "On the Street Where You Live" in the intro to the Act Two Covent Garden scene where Eliza learns she can't go home again.

Was anyone except Desi Arnaz Jr in that movie?  I didn't remember.

Arnaz was very good in that film, but the star was "Richard Thomas" and he was wonderful.

Richard Crenna played his father...who moved the family to New Mexico while he was off in the war.  Claire Bloom was the mother.

The movie belonged to the three juvenile leads...and I thought they were spectacular as a trio.

CharlesPogue a friend had a similar dog experience.  UPS left a package of chocolate from Switzerland on her doorstep, inside the electric fence where the dogs were.  Her very large Bernese Mountain Dog puppy ripped open the box and ate all of the chocolate.  The puppy was fine when they returned home and the vet said not all dogs get sick from it, a theory I would never test.

Good news for fans of Miyazaki movies.
“Howl's Moving Castle” is coming in the US in June.
Many stars, Billy Crystal, Lauren Bacall, Gene Simmons and more, will appear as dubbers in it.

"Dubber" is a correct word in this case?

Hisaka, my on-line dictionary says dubber is a word, yet my spell check says it isn’t.  If it isn’t a word I would not want to be the one to correct the charming way  you write.  :)

I'm glad you enjoyed the story.

Tumi is another store I shall have to check out-when I find one.

Goodnight for real.

"Dubber" would be the word here in Australia too Hisaka.
François has seen the new Miyazaki and was I think, a little disappointed - plot devices are recurring!

THE NEON CEILING, now there is a movie I had forgotten all about. For some reason Chicago UHF stations used to play it a lot. Lee Grant spirits her daughter, D. Nickerson, away in the night and they somehow end up living at a bar with an unpleasant Gig Young who for reasons now forgotten by me, has created a massive neon scupture on the ceiling, hence the title.

Here's a BK question for everyone else too. What is/are the best made-for-TV movies you've ever seen?

Mine:
The Dark Secret of Harvest Home with Bette Davis

We've done best TV movies a couple of times.  All my favorites were part of the seventies ABC Movie of the Week - A Cold Night's Death, Pursuit (now on DVD),l Isn't it Shocking?, How Awful About Alan, Dr. Cook's Garden - them's were the days.

Although I have not seen it in many, many years...SUMMER GIRL starring Diane Franklin. Well, it may not be the best, but it was a lot of fun!

My vote for best would probably go to AN EARLY FROST starring Aiden Quinn and Gena Rowlands.

Good Evening!

Back from the show...

Good show, and a very nice crowd.  A good mix of friends and family and regular ticket buyers.  ;)

DR Iris was in attendance.  And she brought Beard Papa Cream Puffs!  Vanilla and Chocolate!  They were for PennyO and myself, but since PennyO was heading out after the show with her friends and family... I shall bring you/her some tomorrow night.

I hung out for a little bit, then walked under the neon in Times Square before hopping on the A-Train back to 168th Street.  Now, I'm just enjoying some episodes of "That Family Guy" and hanging out with my "roomies".

A very good night.  And I can tell there will be many more to come.

:)

Back from reading...

DR Ben - Yes, my friend, Nick, got the call this afternoon!  He will be playing Hero.  And as it turns out, there's a guy and his girlfriend he's currently doing a show with in Connecticut - and they've been cast as one of the Proteans and a Gemini.  Small world.

And, yes, as I think I stated before, Nick does have very nice legs... And abs...  And pecs...  And he's just a really nice guy to boot too!

I promised him I would not post those pics on the internet..

Lots of DVD packaging now spells out what aspect ratio the film is being projected in. For example, MARY POPPINS is clearly labeled on its box as 1.66:1; RAGING BULL is 1.85:1; THE INCREDIBLES 2.39:1. Once you've started taking note of the dimensions, you can spot them on your TV or at your local theater if you just look at the shape of the image as it's projected (if the projectionist is showing it correctly, that is.)

Leonard Maltin's Movie Guide identifies those films that are shot in named widescreen formats like Cinemascope, Panavision, Vistavision, Super 35, etc. Lots of home video magazines and on line reviewers also give the information in the specs foe the videos.

Ansco was a variation of Eastman Color that MGM licensed as their own. After years of paying a premium for Technicolor cameras and their processing, some of the studios were happy to concoct their own color process based on Eastman Color. Fox had Deluxe; Warners had WarnerColor, and MGM had Ansco.

Another good TV movie is TRIBES with Jan Michael Vincent and the aforementioned Darren McGavin.

A surprise in the mail today. The Swedish DVD of a low-budget werewolf movie I acted in a few years ago. The fact that someone had to translate the inane dialogue into Swedish is somehow amusing.

Well, as it says on the back cover, "Wanneer de maan door een meteorieten inslag van zijn baan raakt en dichter bij de aarde komt veranderen..."

Have a good flight BK. Tumi times in Yumi New York City await!
