Title: I THINK I'M GONNA LIKE IT HERE
Post by: bk on March 17, 2005, 10:13:42 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you think you're gonna like the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - and when they do I think they're gonna like it here.

Friday Media Check...

Well, since I'm in the Big Apple too right now, I can't answer that question (too).

???

Well, since I'm now "officially" in charge of splitting the check at Angus McIndoe, I guess that means I don't have to pay!

-Yeah, right...

;)

In any case...

Was it DR Ben who made the final reservation?  Or was it DR elmore?

Will we be at a bunch of smaller tables?  Or will we all be at one big table?  The upstairs room?  (Hmm... and with Easter next weekend... but I digress.)

Will I have to bring my pocket calculator with me?

;)

To quote Little Red Riding Hood in Into The Woods - "Excited and scared."

Oh.. And just a warning/request to the DRs coming to Jewish Thighs on Saturday...

Since I did not bring a camera with me this trip, I will most likely ask a DR or two to snap a few pictures of me and Penny at the Clurman... In the theatre... In front of the lobby poster... etc.. -The usual stuff to send home to the folks.

Since I've been here in Washington Heights, I've been watching some episodes of "The Family Guy" (on DVD) with Nick and Graham.  It's sort of our equivalent of Late Night TV since they don't have cable/reception.

Favorite line from last night's episode:

"This is worse than Seussical

Favorite line from tonight's episode:

"You're so far in the closet, you're finding Christmas presents."

DR Jane - On the way to the theatre tonight, I made a stop at the Time Warner Center to get a quick bite to eat the Whole Foods there - what a surprise.  ;)  In any case, since I had a bit of time to spare, I decided to check out the Williams-Sonoma....

I am not worthy... I am not worthy....

WOW!

It really is a BIG store.  Nicely laid out, and there's even a small second floor "loft" in the back that features some of their fine dining linens, flatware and china.

My only quibble/question with the layout is the open kitchen area that is used for demonstrations and classes.  It's in the back of the store, but the area around it - where the students and observers sit - is very small.  They were setting up for a class tonight, and the staff was trying to squeeze 20 chairs into the area they cordoned.

But, otherwise, it's a great space.  Lots of stuff on display.  Lots of room to move around, and a neat "inventory helper" system.  In order to keep more stuff on display (like in most Williams-Sonoma locations), they keep most of the stock in back.  Well, each of the clerks is equipped with a headset system that is hooked directly into the backroom.  It was very neat watching the clerks talk into their lapel mics, and then a minute later watching an inventory clerk walk up to the counter with the item in hand.

In related news...  The NY Times reported yesterday that Sur La Table will be opening their first NYC store in SoHo in the fall.  Most Sur La Table locations have separate kitchen/classrooms.  I was surprised that they weren't already in Manhattan.

-Oh, and nothing left my wallet while I was in Williams-Sonoma this afternoon.  ;)  Willpower, I tell ya!

And I meant to post this recipe earlier in the week from the New York Times Magazine this past Sunday.

Bon Appetit!

;)

***********************

Light-as-Air Brunch[/i]

Air, approximately 6 cubic feet
1 pound highest-grade sirloin
3 eggs
4 perfect lobsters
Whipping cream, basil and the most expensive mushrooms obtainable anywhere in the world.

1. Mix, in a mixing bowl, the air. Set aside to cool.

2. Take the sirloin, the eggs, the perfect lobsters and the incredibly expensive mushrooms and return them to the store.

3. Come home.

4. Remember that you also should have returned the stupid basil and the idiotic whipping cream.

5. Bag up basil and whipping cream, go back to the store exasperated, return basil and whipping cream, stomp out of store.

6. Come home, pretend to be eating the air in the bowl, look at imaginary person to your right, slowly shaking head as if to say, Wow, was that good. Serves 1 to 20.

Important: If you experience actual pleasure during any of the above steps, you are doing it wrong. Smack yourself in the head with tenderizing mallet until headache develops, then repeat Steps 1 through 6, watching carefully for signs of enjoyment. A desirable variation involves skulking around the neighborhood to see if anyone is enjoying a lush, decadent meal. If so, lecture on benefits of self-denial and sinful nature of self-gratification until he or she loses appetite or chases you away. Sneak back later, firebomb his or her grill.

In honor of the title "I THINK I'M GONNA LIKE IT HERE," I'm going to bring a CD of Annie to work to listen to.  I think I'll bring the Israeli cast recording...in Hebrew!! ;D

In my DVD player:  The Man from Snow River: The Arena Spectacular and "Bjorn Again," the documentary/concert DVD of the ABBA tribute band (both were gotten from eBay).

In my CD player:  a whole bunch of stuff that I have at work, to be listed (and listened to) later.  I have so much that I just got and need to listen to.  I don't remember what all is there. ::)

In my VCR:  Thursday night's clip-fest episode of "The Apprentice" and "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"

That's it for now.  I have to put out the recycling now so that it can be picked up in the morning (before I wake up).

HAVE A GREAT TIME IN NEW YORK, EVERYONE!!  I wish I could be there.

Good morning, all!  I slept quite badly last night, and I'm sure it was the elation of seeing Dear Friend BK last night and catching up on all the news, getting back here  and catching up on all the posts, and knowing what a mad whirl this weekend is going to be.  After turning out the light, my mind kept bouncing off the walls of my skull for some time.  I'm not complaining, only realizing that I'll need to crash after Barnes&Noble before DRGinny arrives and we head off to some dinner.

TOD:  I doubt I'll be watching any television before Sunday, so that cancels out DVD and VCR.  CD:  Jerome Kern, John Rutter cjoral pieces, Bryn Terfel, and Zez Confrey.

It's Today! (a Mame reference)

I'm up and putting the final touches on my preparations and will be off to Cleveland in a couple of hours.  Due into NYC about 5pm.

CD's (car - it's a long drive to Cleveland) - second half of the John Adams bio audiobook and, YAY, bk's Stephen Schwartz album.  The discussion earlier this week made me want to hear it and my library doesn't own it.  I went online to MORE (Moving Ohio's Resources Everywhere) and it arrived from a library clear across the state yesterday.  Some other CD's, too, which I haven't quite decided on.

Car: bagpipe music

By the way, I apparently wore my camera out. I'm told it's not worth fixing. I took over 9000 pictures in 13 months, so I got good use out of it. I expect I'll go shopping for another one today, since I use it for work all the time.

I think I had a nice night's sleep, although it seemed like was waking up every time I got into a different position.  I thought it was later than it was, when I finally got out of bed, but it was only nine-thirty.  Still, that gave me my eight hours and that's fine.

Looking forward to seeing a few of you there, and looking forward to PennyO's show and seeing folks there.  And looking forward to Angus McIndoe after that.  I think it's going to be FASCINATING, the get-together at Angus McIndoe and I shall be taking it all in, oh, yes, I shall be taking it all in.

DR JOSE you are now officially not within walking distance of anything interesting.  Unless you want to walk about 10 miles.  You are even further from Clowes - I am assuming they bus the company to performances.

Lots of pricey restaurants and the Fashion Mall which USED to be the place where the BEST people shopped.  Now they go downtown - to pay outrageous prices for shoddy goods.

I am not too familiar with the northeast side of town - never go up there.  Maybe someone else can give you some guidance.

Well, we had two choices, and I picked the more appealing one.  Ah, well...

However, there is a quote from the manager of the place stating that this is "the best place to stay in town", "everything you could ever need is nearby".  We shall see.

And, yes, they will be bussing and vanning us to and from the theatre.  -Although, I'm also thinking of getting rental car if I can get a good rate.

FASCINATING, huh? Well, if ya ask me that's just GIBBERISH

Two words in one day.

He said he would. In yesterday's posting.

Virginia Woolf is on the TKTS board as well so I think it would be easy to get a ticket.

SPAMALOT did not get the absolute fall down dead raves that people were expecting. It certainly got some very good reviews but the battle lines seem to be more evenly drawn now between Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Spamalot. The only real rave that I read was from Clive Barnes in the New York Post. Here is the link if you feel so inclined.

http://www.nypost.com/entertainment/41216.htm

The link to the Newsday review:

http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/stage/ny-etlede4178133mar18,0,5028046.story?coll=nyc-theater-bottom-promo (http://www.newsday.com/entertainment/stage/ny-etlede4178133mar18,0,5028046.story?coll=nyc-theater-bottom-promo)

Since you have to register with the NY Times to read anything I won't post the link to their review. Suffice it to say that Ben Brantley liked it very much but acknowledged that it comes with a built in audience who will probably find the show much funnier than the general public off the streets.

Awaiting the arrival of Mr. W.

Yes, it will be FASCINATING watching all the dynamics at our partay.  And you shall hear all about them, in loving detail, right here at haineshisway.com.  I shall nold nothing back, and I shall also hold nothing back.  Nold?  I like that word.  Nold.  I shall ascribe to it a meaning one of these fine days, although I feel certain words are good enough not to have meanings attached to them.

GIBBERISH!

Well, I wish both shows (SPAMALOT and DRS) much success. I think there should be room on Broadway for two new musical comedies.

I must admit that while I am a big Monty Python fan, I was not blown away by HOLY GRAIL the first time I saw it. I thought there were lots of dead places between the inspired sequences. It has been a film that has increased in fondness for me on each re-visit. Now, LIFE OF BRIAN I found brilliant from Day One.

Yes, there is palpable excitement in the air as HHW folks descend on this fair, sunny city. It would be cool to have footage of each HHW person as they come off their plane, out of their cab, etc. We could beam this footage live over the net to those at home in the rest of the country.

Well... Hainsies and Kimlets are known to be a crazy and peculiar bunch of folks, but not that crazy.

Well... Um...

Nevermind

I do have that video clip feature on my cell phone...

And where do you go in Chelsea to get your hairs cut? My barber is in Chelsea also although I doubt that we go to the same place. I go to a place on 7th Avenue between 21st & 22nd Streets and Yuri cuts my hairs.

You mention Nick and Graham in some of your posts, Jose. Is this the same Nick who has been cast as Hero in Mill Mountain's A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum? Inquiring minds want to know (so does Anthony).

Re:  Boatniks at Peepworld.  Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe that is the new attraction coming to California Adventure in Spring 2006!!

TOD:  DVD player--The Band Wagon which, I'm loathe to admit, I've never seen.  Shame, shame.

However, I have been madly watching MGM/UA DVDs in order to mail them back by March 31.  Here is some news from the Arbitration staff itself:  this suit is NOT only about the inserts.  Evidently many titles were framed incorrectly--full frame films (like the 1940 Thief of Bagdad) got released in widescreen, and films labelled as widescreen on the boxes got released in full screen.  And, most importantly, you do NOT need to return the cases--just the DVDs themselves, so if you are springing for postage yourself (as I am) in order to get delivery confirmation, it's going to be cheap to mail them via Media Mail.  You must have them in the mail by March 31.

Guilty MGM/UA DVD pleasure--I must admit that I actually enjoyed The Abominable Dr. Phibes.  I'm not quite sure what that says about me.

THEATRE OF BLOOD was directed by my late pal, Douglas Hickox.  Douggie also directed my HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES.  In casting that film, there had been some discussion of casting Vincent Price as Dr. Mortimer, the part that eventally Denholm Elliott played.

The National Theatre in Britain is doing a musical version of Theatre of Blood this season.  I think Jim Broadbent is starring.

NEWSWEEK started dumbing down around the time the internet came around and it has gotten exponentially worse the last 4 years or so. They should call it USA TODAY, THE MAGAZINE.

Pogue, I often wondered about Hickox, being that THEATRE OF BLOOD is the only film I've seen of his.  It is so stylishly and cleverly directed. I mean it manages a real balance of dark comedy, plus some actually scary scenes and moments of real suspense. The Shakespearean aspect is very well done too.

BK, re: Newsweek. Time's become like that too.  Welcome to the USA TODAY effect.  Pop news.  Same with most networks.  Lots hip graphics and stylistic touches...very little substantial news.

That's why I go on the internet and read newspapers.  And watch the BBC World News. The only news magazine I read anymore is THE WEEK. which is still a bit capuslated...but it usually distills both sides of an argument down to the pertinent basics without a lot of bullshit rhetoric .

Walter Cronkite used to give us more real, hard news in 15 minutes than any 24-hour news channel now on the air.

Rodzinski, Doug Hickox's career wasn't stellar, but he was a strong solid director (came out of British commercials, I think) and did some interesting films:  Theatre of Blood, my Hound of the Baskervilles, Zulu Dawn (prequel to Zulu about Ishlandhwana), and Entertaing Mr. Sloane.  He also did a Duke Wayne cop film called Brannigan and a nice mini-series of Robt. Louis Stevenson's Master of Ballantrae with Michael York and Richard Thomas.

So, have any of you Left Coast posters come across a California quarter (or two) that you might be willing to drop in a card and send to a New Yorker who despite obsessive checking of all change received has not yet come across one? I'm talking about the U.S. Mint 50 State Quarter program for those of you who don't know. I've been collecting them since it started and I have always been able to get at least one in my change soon after the Quarter was released but the California quarter has been in circulation for a while now and I haven't seen one (other than on the Web site). Good Afternoon!

DR Ben - I went and got my hair cut at Chelsea Barber, 465 W. 23rd (basically at 10th Ave.).  I had heard about the place from various people, and it was featured on "Queer Eye", so...  A little bit of a wait, but I got a great cut, and even though the waiting chairs were filled, each of the three (only three!) barbers really takes their time with their current client.  It was fascinating watching them work.

As for Nick- yes, one and the same.. my buddy, and future "Hero" to DR Ant's Hysterium.

And now I must get ready to hop on the A Train back down to 42nd Street...

What do you know.... that Dame is CLASS personified!
As you may well know, she writes books for children, with her daughter, and Tony Walton does the illustrations... :D

And this summer at Goodspeed, Julie's directing THE BOY FRIEND and Tony's designing it just as they did for the Sag Harbor production about 3 years ago!

Has anybody been following the threads on the Past Films and DVD usenet groups about the WB Classic Comedies DVD sets suddenly disappearing from all the online retailers?  They're not just sold out--they've removed the item completely.  Was there a licensing problem?  Are we all incredibly lucky to have ours?  There was a slight glitch with my order that I didn't think much about until I saw these threads.

I wonder if it was a similar to what happened with the original "special edition" of "Little Shop of Horrors."  Frank Oz had black and white (and maybe silent) footage of the original ending where Audrey II eats everyone and takes over the world.  David Geffen actually owned the rights to it and didn't authorize its release, so he had all the unsold copies pulled.  They sell (or at least sold) for over $100 on Ezekiel Bay.  Maybe there was something in the set that isn't available in an individual disc. ::)

And, yes, the boxed set included the 2 disc special editions.  As does the Musicals Set--that's why they're such a bargain.  You're getting all the films, which retail individually for between $19.95 and $26.95, for a total of around $40.00!!

Vixmom, one of the worst concerts we ever saw was Tony Bennett in the early seventies or late sixties.  Not only was he bad he wouldn’t leave the stage.  People just began walking out on him.

Thanks for asking but unfortunately the renovation don’t go.  It is very frustrating.  We ripped out a few cabinets from a side wall in the kitchen and realized we should have done so years ago.  The kitchen already looks much better.  Maybe we won’t gut the rest of it now.  We shall see.  I have no idea when the floor guy will be here to extend the hardwood floors in the powder room and another area we removed cabinets that held the stereo equipments, CD’s, albums and other assorted stuff.

I've been buying them through the U.S. Mint and getting the "proof" quarter yearly sets.  They're pretty cool!  And I have the whole set...so far.  After this year, there will only be three more years to go.

I work with a woman (Liane) who had been collecting coins with her late husband for quite a few years.  As soon as we each find out about the quarters, we let each other know.  The quarters are the only coins that I collect, but Liane gets a lot more.

The local PBS station is showing some sort of 1960's or 70's rock thing, (the tv is in the other room and I can't see it from here) but they were just playing  "Bad Moon on the Rise"

I haven't heard that song for years but immediately the lyrics came back as sung on the school bus lo those many years ago...

I'm back from our lovely dinner after the WRITER'S BLOCK event, which I heard went splendidly, but I'll let Dear Friend BK give a full report since I wasn't there.  I met DRGinny, her niece, and her niece's boyfriend at Joe Allen's, and then the large group from the reading arrived:  BK our Pied Piper, his assistant Jonathan, two singers from the event (I forget their names!), Richard Valley and Tom Amorosi of SCARLET STREET, DRs Michael Shayne, Danise, Panni, W F Orr and Joe, Rodzinski, and Ben.  I believe a glad time was had by one and all.  More to follow.

I had read about people not being able to find the boxed set at various retailers, but I just assumed the retailers didn't stock many because the films were older classics. I've certainly seen THE PHILADELPHIA STORY and BRINGING UP BABY being sold as separate items.

That's why I bought the boxed set even though I already had the previous release of THE PHILADELPHIA STORY. I saved the second disc of extras on MARY POPPINS for another time since I spent the better part of two days watching the film one time through to look at the anamorphic picture and hear the new sound mix and then today watching it again but with the commentary turned on. At one point, Karen Dotrice was commenting about something, and Richard Sherman asked her how old she was when she made the film. She wouldn't answer because she said people could do the math and know how old she was! Good lord!

Part one:

Can 'Cats' win over Russians?

By Sophia Kishkovsky International Herald Tribune

Saturday, March 19, 2005

MOSCOW"Cats," the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical that made a record run on Broadway, London and around the world has opened in Moscow, where musicals are still associated with the 2002 hostage-taking of an entire theater by Chechen terrorists during a performance of the musical "Nord-Ost."
.Those two shows are also now linked through their actors. Several who performed in "Nord-Ost" are playing in "Cats," part of a new caste of Russian performers who specialize in musicals, which are still relatively new to Russia, a sign of a hunger here to catch up to Europe and the United States in terms of mass entertainment and consumer culture.
."A viewer walks in and understands that this is a brand, that this is what he paid money for," said Dmitri Bogachyov, general director of Stage Holding Russia. He said the Russian version cost "millions of dollars," but declined to be specific. (His company is part of Stage Holding, the Dutch theatrical production company that has staged "Cats" and other musicals, including "Mamma Mia," the ode to Abba, and Lloyd Webber's "Jesus Christ Superstar," around Europe.)
.On Friday, a red carpet was laid out at the theater for the premiere and for the arrival of Lloyd Webber, making his second visit to Moscow; his first was in 1989 for a two-night showing of the German version of "Cats."
.Bogachyov also produced "Nord-Ost" and "12 Chairs," the musical version of a Soviet satirical classic. He said the choice of "Cats" for Russia was made only after much market research and efforts to avoid past mistakes, like the staging of "42nd Street" in 2002 - in English, with American actors.
.Grizabella, Mungojerrie, Skimbleshanks and Deuteronomy are singing "Pamyat" for "Memory," in a translation that hews almost literally to the original adaptation of T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." The cats' names are simply transliterated into Russian. Aleksei Kortnev, an actor and pop star who wrote the libretto for, and starred in, the Russian version of "The Witches of Eastwick," translated "Cats."
.Bogachyov is counting on Russian literary pretensions to draw a high class of viewers to "Cats" - "he is a Nobel laureate" he said of Eliot - and moderate ticket prices, starting at 400 rubles (about $14.50) and ranging to 1,600 rubles, to keep the masses coming.
.Bomb-sniffing dogs patrolled the premises before Thursday's packed preview and security guards guarded the Moscow Palace of Youth Theater, a behemoth of the Soviet era that has been revamped for this production, the viewing hall turned into the traditional "Cats" dump, the foyer ceiling painted and lit to resemble a starry night.
.Christine Cartwright, the resident director of the original London production who was involved in preparing this show, came to Moscow to prepare for the premier.

Is anybody selling the aforementioned recently departed WB set?  I was planning to get it as I am a big Hepburn fan and Stage Door is one of my favorites....now don't cringe when I say this Matt H... but I may have to settle for just watching my old VHS tapes.....

Cameras tomorrow!

WHAT!!! Not even Danise with her nifty new disc that holds three million shots?!   :o

DR Iris will not be at the show tomorrow night due to a previous commitment.  -Which is why she came Wednesday night (instead).

DR Jenny may or may not make it.  She hasn't been able to keep up with the board as much lately, so she didn't realize that tomorrow night was the "official" HHW Night at Jewish Thigns.  But she may make it sometime next week schedule-permitting.

Part two:

"'Cats' has been traveling around the world for a long time already and we're very glad that we have the opportunity to bring it to Russia," she said in a television interview. "This is one of the most famous musicals in the world. This is a very important event for us, since Russia doesn't have a rich tradition of musicals."
.The Moscow version is now the only stationary production of "Cats" in Europe. Bogachyev said he hopes it will help lure tourists to the city. Tickets appeared to be in great demand. Stage Holding said that advance sales had reached 20,000 as of March 11. During an interview, Bogachyov dealt with several callers seeking tickets, even asking that a message be conveyed to someone calling from the Kremlin: "Let them buy tickets," he said cheerfully. He seemed pleased that he has successfully merged the talents of a Dutch, English, German, Spanish and Russian production crew.
.It was tough going. Casting took much longer than expected, five months instead of two, and was done by people on the British side of the production. They gathered a troupe of actors from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Minsk and Kiev. Several pop stars were auditioned, apparently, but were rejected for being too wooden and incapable of singing live.
.The concept of swing performers able to play several roles was introduced and proved timely because the dance and movement in "Cats" takes getting used to for Russian performers and has resulted in several injuries.

I did take a group photo at the very end of the evening.

The signing, reading, and singing went very well.  A lovely group of folks.  As always, about twenty people who said they'd definitely be there didn't show up.  I scratch my head in wonderment.  It was really fun doing the songs "live".  There were some interesting folks besides our splendidly splendid group - including composer/lyricist Doug Cohen (No Way to Treat a Lady, The Gig), and a very nice fellow who posts at All That Chat.  There were a couple of others I didn't know at all, and who left before I met them.  We sold a few books, the food was nice, but the best were the folks.  I didn't like the whole vibe of the bookshop.  When I normally do signings, there is someone in charge who handles everything, tells people what to do and where to go, and introduces me.  That didn't happen.  The man who arranged the signing had to go home before it began.  His associate went home before it began.  Everyone was very nice, certainly, but I found the whole thing confusing.  I hated the downstairs dungeon where the reading took place.  But the upstairs room where we had the party was very nice.  More in the notes.

When I came up to my room, there was a bowl of something yellow sitting on my counter, along with a chilled bottle of wine.  I called down to see who sent it up - apparently the hotel sent it up because I'm a valued guest - I love that.  The yellow stuff was once ice cream, but is now soup.

Part three:

On the musical side, Daniel Bowling, the production's musical supervisor who worked on "Cats" in London, along with "Les Miserables" and "The Phantom of the Opera," said he had problems finding musicians who could improvise. "They have wonderful classical training," he said of the Russian musicians. "The difference is that in the West there are more musicians who are all-rounders."
.
Eventually, he said, he was able to put together a small orchestra that included a jazz pianist and a classical cellist, "who learned the mixture wonderfully."
.
Yelena Charkviani left her role as Killer Queen in the Moscow production of the musical "We Will Rock You" (based on songs by the group Queen) to star as Grizabella. She had never seen "Cats" live, or on video - "I don't like to watch what I will perform" - but had listened to Barbra Streisand's and Elaine Page's performances of "Memory."
.
Charkviani said the production has been exhausting but the attitude toward the actors has been heartening. "They were very respectful," she said. "It was the first time I encountered such an attitude toward performers, both from the English side and our side."
.
.
The verdict is still out on the show. At the preview, a man who came with his two small daughters could be heard muttering, "There needs to be a plot, but there's no plot." Vita Dmitriyeva, who came from St. Petersburg for the show said, "What's the point? What's the logic."
.
Others found it childish and were irritated by what they said looked like Christmas lights over the stage.
.
But some people came out starry-eyed, bundled up against the Moscow slush. "I like it all, the actors, the costumes, the music, the moral," said Tatyana Sergeyeva, an acting teacher who brought a group of 40 teenage students. "I'm in ecstasy."

.

Jose, so half a day in Williams-Sonoma and half a day for the rest of our NY walking tour when we meet? :D

DEAL!!!

Although, I'm thinking we should start and end with the wallking tour portion.  We can start at the Westway Diner on 9th for breakfast, or down in the Lower East Side and The Donut Plant, or down in Chelsea Market at Sarabeth's or Amy's Breads, or....

Then we can walk to Magnolia Bakery for a cupcake or two... Then to Chocolate Bar for a truffle or two...  The the Krispy Kreme in the Village... Or John's Pizza... Or Cones for some gelato... or back over to the LES for some fish & chips at A Salt & Battery.  -And, yes, they do serve Scotch Eggs!

Then in the late afternoon, we can check out The Chippery in Chelsea (they make custom batches of potato, sweet potato and/or beet chips to order - great dipping sauces too!)... Then to F&B (Frankfurters & Beignets) for some great "European" street food (and, yes, they have smoked tofu dogs - and fried green beans!)...   And if it's the right day, we can check out the Green Market in Union Square (breads, vegetables, etc.. even wine!)... -And a new Whole Foods just opened across the street...

Or if you want to stroll up Fifth Avenue... There's Maison du Chocolat...  Minamoto Kitchoan for exquisite Japanese sweets...  Or we can do full Japanese tea in the Tea Room at Takashimaya... Perhaps a wine tasting at Morelli...  There are a couple of great falafel and kebab carts long that stretch too.

And then to finish off the day... We can go up 8th Ave... Dinner at Artie's...  Perhaps some dim sum at Ollie's...  A Beard Papa Cream Puff or two (although, I'm going to have to try their Mango Over Shaved Ice dessert sometime next week)... Then up a few more blocks to H&H to stock up on some bagels (unless you want to go to the Hell's Kitchen location)... And Zabar's, of course!

And then there's Brooklyn, Queens, Harlem, Long Island, The Bronx...etc., etc., etc...

Oops... I forgot about Williams-Sonoma!

;D

BK, just those the yellow stuff wasn't some spiked food from some crazed fan...They set out ice cream for you?  Cake!  Cake you could actually use and it's not time sensitive.  Or a cookie...Or just a mint on the pillow...The wine I can understand?  But ice cream, when they don't know when you'll be back?

Was it a good bottle of wine?  Whose the vintner?

Chocolate Therapy (TM)

Chocolate Ice Cream with Chocolate Cookies & Swirls of Chocolate Pudding Ice Cream

Uh-oh. Call the emotional rescue squad. Whatever wrinkle, glitch, minor upset or major mishap may be the cause of your discombobulated state, that "must-have-chocolate" mantra you're muttering calls for primal s'cream therapy of the sublimest chocolate kind.

I'm not sure I really, really like it.  I ate half the pint just now.  So, I guess I'll have to eat the rest of it tomorrow night before I can make a final judgment.

MBarnum- That was me who outbid you!

Just kiddin'. But I can't imagine who else in the world IS bidding on these things.  B-YOND THE LOST WORLD, if I'm thinking of the right one, I got to act with the C-Movie scream queen Debbie Rochon. Part of it was shot at a mansion in Brooklyn somewhere. I don't think a single aspect of my character made any sense. I'll see if I can't send you a copy of RAGE because I don't want you spending any more money on these. The best, if you can find it, is called GREY SKIES: ALIEN CONSPIRACY which sells for $3.99 and thereabouts. I wrote/directed my segment in that, and it is flawed, but I am proud of some of it.

I'm with you, Pogue. Ice cream is just a bad idea, no matter how good it SOUNDS, why would you deliver ice cream to a room without being sure the person is there to enjoy it?

The sad thing is the "dungeon" where the singing took place would be considered a pretty choice theatre space in this town. Such is the dearth of good places in which to mount modest productions.

Last I've heard, if CATS succeeds in Moscow, the next musical there would be an original production called "My Fair Chenchya", which now has the working title of
"The Hills Are Alive With The Sound Of Kalachnikovs".

They haven't asked me, but I don't know if that's a good idea!
