Well, you've read the notes, you know that bunnies and eggs are a comin', and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be just in time for their gaily-colored eggs.
-
And the word of the day is: VERMILLION!
-
Properly spelled, "vermilion" should have but one "L". There's something I learned watching Johnny Carson. Some dictionaries do list both though.
My folks used to hide the Easter baskets, and one Easter I just could NOT find mine. It was always fun when it wasn't too easy, but this got way past that point, and all the siblings were enjoying their goodies, and I was still looking and growing increasingly upset. Eventually, they gave me some clear hints, but not soon enough, in my opinion. It was hanging behind some coats on the stairway.
-
Yes, both spellings, I believe, are acceptable, therefore we can have both spellings here at haineshisway.com.
VERMILLION!
VERMILION!
-
Well, I shall toddle off to the bedroom environment, for I must get my beauty sleep before she of the Evil Eye arrives.
BUTT - before I go, let me just reiterate - VERMILLION!
-
Frankly, VERMILLION, I don't give a damn!
-
I have no special Easter memories. Just church and Easter baskets. Later when my aunt had kids, it seems we went to their house every Easter and had an Easter egg hunt. Aside from eating too much candy and sitting bored in church, I don't remember a heck of a lot about it. Oh, I guess we got (and will get) over the weekend the usual barrage of Christ films. Seems like the deliciously over-ripe Mr. Frank Thring will be all over our TV screens, lisping: "DanssssSalome!"
-
It seems there was always that egg that was found a week later under a chair or something near the radiator, beginning to rot and stink up the place.
-
I have lovely memories of looking for Easter Eggs around our Jewish house. I think I accidentally crushed one that was hidden under the pillow on the couch. I heard a big ol' scrunch, and when I removed the pillow I discovered a fractured egg, with bits of gaily-colored shell broken off.
-
I, too, once attempted to make hard-boiled eggs so that they could be gaily-colored, but no one had informed me how long they had to cook - therefore I left them in the water until they exploded. That was most amusing.
-
And the food of the day is, in honor of Easter - EGGS. I think I may go eat an omelet this morning, as part of my killing time time.
-
Actually, with inflation, the new spelling is VERBILLION.
Eggs, yes, rotten and crushed. All part of God's great Easter plan.
And now, sleep o'ertakes me. G'night!
-
All I have to say is "DansssssSalome!"
-
From "The Mad Show" and Stephen Sondheim-
Why are his trousers vermillion?
His trousers are vermillion.
Why does he claim he's Castilian?
He thayth that he'th Cathtilian.
Why do his friends call him...Lillian?
-
Although my daughter was raised in a Jewish home, I could never resist hiding easter eggs, jelly beans, and other assorted Easter treats all over the back yard-even inside the gas barbecue! Yellow peeps in the branches of the lemon tree. Speckled chocolate eggs hidden amongst cacti and palm trees. Chocolate rabbits peaking out from potted azaleas, and dozens of brightly colored eggs in the rose garden. All of the candy had to be discovered before the mid-afternoon, as it would sometimes get up to over 80 degrees by then, and all of the chocolates would melt. This was in Phoenix, ya see.I'll always remember her delight in the hunt and the discoveries. I'm not sure which one of us had the most fun.
-
I encountered an angel on the street this afternoon.
-
He was peeping around the corner. I have no idea what’s “his mission” or “for what” he’ve got down to the earth or “since when” he’s ever been there. Nobody around him/me had turned one’s attention to him, as if all passers didn’t recognize him at all. I was the only person who could see him? (….in the Twilight Zone?)
Oh, he came down here on the earth for Easter!
-
What happened to my post???
-
An angel's trick???
-
Or I really am in the Twilight Zone???
-
Good morning, al! Yes, I had a great evening with DRRodzinski watching SCOTLAND, PA, and I too enjoyed the film. Who'd have thought a play about Scottish kings could become a metaphor for upwardly mobile white trash?
Back to Barnes & Noble today. I think I may stop at the market today and bring in an Easter treat.
Yes, Dear Friend BK, I have a hard-boiled egg ready for lunch today. I believe this may be the first time ever I'm on the HHW dietary schedule.
DRJose, I do have plans tonight, but when you move to Manhattan, I promise we'll get our spy glasses and go musical sleuthing.
More to follow.
-
What a lovely day! I didn't sleep much - sunlight pouring in through the big windows... who can sleep with such a light??? And who'd want to, after so dark and drear a winter... It's SPRING!!!
Good show last night, made all the lovlier by Jose having brought this all-but-anorexic little has-been a whopping great box o' pastries and hamentashen from one of his haunts up there near the GW Bridge! Oh, yummmmmm. How does one sing with a mouthful of cookies?????
Hard to believe that two weeks ago we were hammering out plans for our show, getting ready to load in, fiddling with a zillion vermillion details -- and by tomorrow afternoon it's done. So fleeting is that ol' illusion, Time.
We do get another couple of reviews - one comes out on Tuesday - Show Business Weekly - they asked for a pic yesterday. And some online site called New York Theatre Wire or something. Also a quarterly magazine sometime in the summer. (I will hold off crabbing about my "press/publicity" person...)
Had a rather wistful call from my mom yesterday -- when am I coming back. I think I'll cut the follow-up period to about a week, and get on a plane. I'm done here - and both of them have waited so patiently. It was so fun to play dress up, and cavort on a NY stage again. It'll be there for me, any time. My parents won't.
Thanks, all wonderful DR's for helping me celebrate. There is no business like show business!! Onward...
-
I do have a special Easter memory. In the small SC town where I grew up, there was always an Easter fashion show featuring kids wearing new Easter clothes from the various department stores around town. A cousin of mine owned a children's clothing store called The Dianne Shop, and for several years in a row, I was the male child who took part in the fashion show for her store. I never liked the clothes very much that I was made to wear, but it was fun parading up and down a runway as a kid while people snapped pictures.
-
I have three more episodes of FRIENDS to watch on the 9th Season DVD set, and then I have LAURA ready to go.
However, yesterday, I received a used copy of THE TERMINAL which I got for $5. Looking forward to seeing that.
-
The friend who invited me to his home for Easter dinner tomorrow has also promised to loan me the DODGEBALL DVD to watch. That should be goofy fun, too.
-
Good morning all!
I had a cup of……..coffee (yuck) this morning. I had brought home the little packs of coffee from my hotel room and Mom wanted to try them. Problem. We don’t have a coffee maker. Mom always drank instant.
So yesterday I bought her a little Mr. Coffee 4 cup coffee maker. It’s a nice little machine that makes the coffee in under seven minutes and it has a timer on it so you can set to make the coffee before you get up in the morning. NeatO, huh?
To bad I don’t happen to like the stuff. Ugh. I don’t know how people drink it on a daily basis. I remember when I was kid that I wasn’t allowed to even have it because it was “bad for your nerves”. I had to wait until I was grown to even try it. I could still wait as far as that drink is concerned.
I will say that I noticed that you (DR Jose) waited to go out with others to have an “adult beverage”. I’m sure that no one would have minded if you had your coffee at the table with us. ;) :D
DR JRand, I don’t have any of the DS DVD’s/Tapes. Sorry. I wish they would release “House of Dark Shadows” and “Night of Dark Shadows”.
They are going to give it third try? Of course, I’ll watch it if it comes out but I don’t think it will be as “good” as the first time around.
DR Jane, I hope your eyes are better today. Healing Eye Vibes your way!
BTW, I like “Larry”! :)
Sorry I didn’t post when I got home last night but I was tired. I couldn’t believe how my legs hurt. I guess I did more walking last weekend then I thought. I was going to go to the Ren Fest today but think I shall put that off until next weekend.
I think I may have found my notebook computer—an Averatec 3270 either the notebook version or the tablet PC. Just can’t make my mind up as to which. The guy at Circuit City is trying to talk me into the Toshiba M35XS311. He said the battery life is much better on it but it seems much bigger and heaver then the Averatec. Any thoughts?
-
Hey, Vixmom--Is THIS the place you "must" vist with the Vixter? :)
-
If I had to pick one of the dolls for myself, it would be this one.....
-
And I would HAVE to have this as well.......
-
BTW--It would be the horse I want, not the doll next to it.
-
Good Morning!
DR Rodzinksi - Thanks for the diner tip!
Alas, when I got up this morning - and it is a gloriously sunny morning here in New York City as DR PennyO pointed out - I didn't feel like heading out and having a sit-down breakfast. So, I just had my bowl of cereal - which was/is a good thing, since I don't want to leave any leftovers in the kitchen here.
In a few minutes, I'll repack my luggage which shouldn't take long at all. I'll be taking my big bag with me today to the theatre so that I don't have to worry about lugging it with me tomorrow - or hailing a cab. Then tomorrow, all I have to bring is my laptop case and my small carry-on type deal. Then the matinee. Then the 5:05 train back to DC...
Another openin', another show...
-
Unless she just happened to come with the horse. ;)
I had a whole set of Bryer horses when I was kid and I played with them like most little girls do dolls. I never really cared for dolls.
Johnny and Jane West were the closest I ever came to them but only because they had horses.
-
Hisaka, I LOVE the little peeping angel. I wonder why it’s there? An ad of some kind?
-
Good Morning!

Awww, It's a sad/happy thing when a show ends. Good travels when you leave, DR Jose.
-
DR Danise - The Averatec models, in general, have been getting very good ratings across the board. They're good basic models with just enough extras to make them good for more than just basic stuff. I almost bought one at CompUSA before I walked into the Apple Store. -Do you have an Apple Store in Tampa? ;)
Ohh... A Tablet PC.... Very nice.
Be sure to see if you can actually pick each model up at the store WITH the battery inside it. If you're going to be carrying it around with you (a lot, like I do with my laptop), then the weight of the laptop WITH the battery could be a deciding factor.
-
I've never developed a taste for coffee either. After a heavy meal, I have been known to drink a cup of coffee, but I've never been a morning coffee drinker and would much rather have a Coke (diet preferably) for my caffeine fix.
-
After two glorious days of sunshine and warm temperatures, we've regressed into cloudy and very cool for the next couple of days. Highs aren't supposed to get out of the low 50s today and tomorrow.
-
OK... Time for me to start a-packin'...
Laters...
-
DR Jose, I'm sure we do have an Apple store but I'm not sure I'd want one. I want things to be compatable with my PC. The 2 notebooks I've mentioned are both PC friendly.
I think I'll stick to my tea for my "fix". I got off of the cola wagon a few years back as well. I stick to Sprite, 7 UP and the like.
We have a kinda bla day as well. A lttle overcast. Looks like it wants to rain as well.
-
VERMILLION! Better yet, VERMILLION EGGS! I must clothe myself before she of the Evil Eye gets here.
-
Nobody here but us chickens. However, without us chickens we wouldn't have a food of the day, and we wouldn't have anything to gaily color.
-
I must clothe myself before she of the Evil Eye gets here.
'else She of the Evil Eye will get an Eye Full! :o ;) ;D :o

My favorite Easter memories are of the wonderful easter baskets! The one I recall the most was given to me around 1972 by my Grandma Dixon...it had a tiny little chick decoration tied to the handle...the kind that you can buy in a package for about 5 cents....buy for some reason I thought it was very neat! I always tied one on the baskets I made for my neice and nephew when they were kids.
I also have fond memories of watching the silent KING OF KINGS on TV. It was shown each Easter on some channel during the mid 70s when I was in 5 and 6th grades. Maybe I will watch that movie tomorrow!
-
Good Afternoon!
Clothes are packed.
Dishes are clean.
I'm all spic-n-span too - great water pressure in this apartment!
And now I'm off to the theatre...
I'm heading to a friend's birthday party somewhere in the Lower East Side after tonight's show. A place called "Sin Sin" - at 2nd Ave and 5th. I'm not planning on staying long, but I do hope to catch up - albeit briefly - with some of the people that will be there. She's an old tour-buddy of mine, and lots of other survivors from that tour will be there also tonight. Fun, Fun, Fun! In Sin, Sin! -Very appropriate for Easter Weekend, huh, dontcha think?
Well...
So, I'll be back on later tonight...Probably much later... We shall see... I do have a closing matinee tomorrow, so... I shan't be out too late...
OH... And don't forget...
Every time you hear a bell ring...
It's just DR vixmom and her vixter at the cash register at American Girl Place.

Easter is always fun - and I remember too much candy always - and always expecting hard boiled eggs to taste better because they had been decorated - they didn't.
And then there was the time when my brother and I age (age 13 & 14) were put in charge of parking for the Sunday service - because we always got about a 100 extra people. We started by parking all the cars in the second lot. And in fact we parked everyone so tight and so close, there was no one in the first lot and no one could get out until the car in front of him moved. We never got to be in charge of parking again.
-
Sin-Sin? Praise to Buddah!
-
Lady In a Cage - I have only seen on television - but it seemed a bit overwrought.
Lee J. Cobb....hmmmm....I keep remembering him in the remake of The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (which I liked) - his idea of a heart attack is pretty darn scary!
Could we talk about some Paul Henning shows today? The Beverly Hillbillies and to a point Petticoat Junction, always made me laugh.
Mrs. Drysdale had a poodle named Claude....Elly Mae happened to be over there one day....she went home and told Granny.
Elly: I sure would want ta work fer Miz Drysdale. She's mean to her maid. I heard her say, 'Marie! Marie! Come here and get clawed!'"
And of course there was great concern when Miz Drysdale kept her mules under her bed and had an ailing hibiscus.
-
Jose the thought of a deep fried Cadbury Egg made me gag. ;D
Vixmom I look forward to the walking tour with you. So far it will be Jose, elmore, you and me. Who else wants to go? Now all I have to is get to NY in October. :D
The only specific candy I remember Bryan giving me is the one with hazelnuts. I kept telling him it isn’t safe for me to eat candy without knowing the ingredients (all samples without the traditional wrapping). He insisted the candy was safe. I took one bite and spit it out as quickly as possible. Then I had to take immediate action before my throat closed up on me. ::)
-
Well I for one mentioned Petticoat Junction just yesterday, but that was before news of Henning's death was released. I went to IMDb last night and looked up the show--it turns out my tape I sold on eBay was rare because it contained first season episodes with the original theme music. Also, I never knew that Linda Kaye was Henning's daughter. And I sure don't remember June Lockhart starring in the show for the last two seasons. Did Bea Benadaret die?
-
The other interesting thing (about the pilot episode, anyway, I didn't watch any of the others) is that they say the train came courtesy of the Hoyt Hotel in Portland, Oregon!! That contradicts what is said on IMdb. I'll have to do some research about the Hoyt Hotel--if it still exists, it's become an apartment house or something.
-
Wouldn't June Lockhart still have been Lost in Space (so to speak) in 1968-69? She must have had her own private space shuttle to Hooterville, LOL.
-
Or maybe Lost in Space ended 1967-68. That's probably right.
-
Talkin' to yourself....it's lonely....talkin' to yourself.....
-
Yes, DR JMK - Lost in Space ended the season before June moved to the Shady Rest. Bea died and Kate "went away to visit her sister." I think there were some episodes with a body double for Bea and voiceover that Bea did from home.
If your b/w episodes contained the original opening music, they are indeed rare. Most of the videos and dvd's available have library music - this is true for a lot of DVD releases of The Lucy Show, Bonanza, and The Beverly Hillbillies, too. No payment to the composers, I guess.
June Lockhart was Dr. Janet Craig and she never looked comfortable in the part.
As for the train, I thought it was one from 20th's "A Ticket to Tomahawk" and wasn't even a real one, but I just know what I read.
-
Penny I know how hard it is when your parents ask when you are returning, especially now. My heart goes out to you.
Thanks Danise. I think I need those vibes. I have no idea why my eyes are still bothering me so much. I like Larry too, both Larry’s. :D
-
JMK - one of my favorite "train" movies is RING OF FIRE that was filmed up in your neck of the woods in 1961!
-
So, Wednesday was when we took Benny/Little Baxter back to the single mom and her daughter, with waggelly tail and happy faces.
Thursday found us on the road again. This time, we were heading over towards Baltimore, where a young married couple wanted to adopt Big Baxter. Figuring it would be easier to take mama Peggy with us, so that we could leave the doggy door open for the rest of the pack (Peggy having discovered she can climb over our fence), we loaded mama and son into the car for the long ride.
Peggy spent most of the ride sleeping on the back seat. Baxter started by sleeping on my lap, then moved to the seat well behind me and slept back there. For the most part, the trip was uneventful...until we had trouble identifying which highway we were supposed to be on. Signage on East Coast highways has always been a bane for der Brucer. We got into downtown Baltimore, and then had to turn around and head south again to get to our destination.
We had arranged to meet the couple at a park near their home. Der Brucer is very wary of letting strangers into our house, and just as mindful of meeting others in a neutral area before going to their home. Peggy and Baxter were awake by this time...and that's where we ran into our second problem. I had a firm hold on Peggy's leash, but her collar didn't have a firm hold on her! She went bounding out of the car, the collar's catch snapped open, and she charged at another dog that was being walked nearby. Scared me, scared the other dog's owner...probably scared the other dog, as well! I had to physically carry her back to the car.
Peggy had to watch as we met with the young couple. They already had a dog, a four-month old Lab mix, and had decided that she needed a buddy. Fortunately, Baxter and Dakota got along immediately, and the Wife thought Baxter was a charmer. Hubby was not as thrilled.
We followed them back to their apartment, and der B went in with them and the dogs while I stayed with Peggy. She fretted, watching where der B had gone, then laying down on my lap, then moving to his driver's seat, then watching for der B again.
It took quite a while, but der B finally showed up with the proper papers signed, the new home approved, a check for expenses to be stashed in my wallet for safekeeping. The drive home was quiet. We listened to Dawn Upshaw singing Rogers and Hart (kudos to Larry for his involvement) and then to Rupert Holmes' Widescreen (kudos to BK for his involvement). Somewhere along the dark highway der Brucer missed a turn he'd planned on taking, so we went on a detour again, getting home very late and tired.
And even with six dogs in the house, the place seemed very quiet. There were no little growls or barks and little paws.
-
Hisaka I enjoyed your angel pictures and Twilight Zone reference. ;D
Count me as another who doesn’t like coffee and it really doesn’t like me. Now I’m in the mood for coffee ice cream. I’m wondering if it will go with the Girl Scout Mint Thins I just ate.
Maybe later today I will have a hard boiled egg.
What is June Lockhart's daughter doing these days? Does she still act?
-
I have never been a fan of coffee...mocha, yes, but coffee, no. I usually do like the smell, but not the taste. :P
The only real strong Easter memory that I have was when we lived in Colorado (I was between 6 and 10 years old) and my mom hid bowls (my parents didn't always get us baskets) of eggs and candy on beds of plastic grass. My sister found hers pretty quickly, but I couldn't find mine at all! My parents couldn't remember, either! So they said that they would get me more candy money that they had intended to get me if we didn't ever find it. So, that was okay.
Anyway, my mom started to make breakfast (probably pancakes) and turned on the oven to keep the cooked food hot until it was all done and ready to be eaten all together. Well, a short time later, we all smelled the melting plastic! My mom had hidden my bowl of Easter stuff in the oven...and it was in a plastic bowl that was now melting along with all the candy and plastic grass! I don't remember if I was upset at the time, but now I think it's hilarious! (Not to make fun of my mom or anything, but it's just pretty darned funny!)
-
Signage on East Coast highways, especially Pennsylvanian and New Jersey, has always been a bane for me.
Baxter and Dakota, I like the combination. Good vibes finding Peggy a home. Do you keep the money for expenses or does it go to the rescue group? Is it always a set amount per dog?
-
George, funny now but I doubt your mother thought so at the time. I have forgotten where I hid Christmas presents. A few were saved until the following year.
You are lucky you enjoy the smell of coffee. One can avoid drinking it but not smelling it. Sometimes I wake up in the morning and the smell really bothers me.
-
Friday morning, with little in the way of sleep for either of us, der B and I were up early. We'd been commissioned to ladsit again. We put Peggy down in the basement, so that she wouldn't bolt over the fence, and took Fletcher with us.
Ah, but we were not just to ladsit this time! There were Easter Eggs to dye, which meant they needed to be hardboiled first. It was because der Brucer took on the boiling task that I got to sit with the lads while they watched The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie. I have never seen anything as vile, as crass, as purile, and I don't mean that in a nice way. The lads, of course, loved it.
We took the lads and Fletcher with us to Sam's Club, where der B had to pick up some things. Fletcher spent the trip to the store, a half-hour trip, in my lap. He waited for us with admirable patience while we shopped (der B also had been given a list from his daughter, so we had two carts to load), and then waited again wile we lunched at McDonalds. McDonalds is evil, but the lads love it. Bleh. One more stop, at Best Buy for a copy of Yellow Submarine on DVD for the lads (they were out) and we headed back to the homestead, Fletcher on my lap again, this time on his back while I rubbed his belly.
Fletcher weighs 85 pounds, by the way.
After that, there were eggs to be dyed, and the parents returned home, and we were finally on our way back to our own abode. Peggy was very happy to be out of the basement, and hunted through the house for her missing pups. Der B and I had a light dinner, and crashed early.
And that's pretty much how things stand for now. Six dogs, two humans. I'm the only one awake this afternoon. Such is life.
-
I love coffee! LOL! Usually just plain black coffee...sometimes with cream.
JMK, it seems to me that the train from PETTICOAT JUNCTION is from Oregon...check the credits next time you watch the show.
Paul Henning did some fantastic shows...I still love BEVERLY HILLBILLIES! The show always makes me laugh!
-
Now to catch up on what everyone else has been doing!
-
HHW LIVE CHAT on Monday!!!
Be there or be square!
-
Stopped at Target to look for a new G.F. Grill...will wait until the Sunday ads to see if anything is on sale tomorrow.
Did get Easter basket, and items to fill it with, for my niece Katie and her hubby Brian...it is just a tradition I guess...she is 22 years old now! LOL! I always get one Hello Kitty item and at least one Pez dispenser to go in the basket....in addition I added the DVD for Bambi as that was the first movie I took Katie to when she was a youngster (plus she had mentioned that she wanted it)
-
I, too, am no coffee drinker. The only time I've ever drunk coffee was when I was playing Noah in THE RAINMAKER in Dinner Theatre (James Drury, "The Virginian", played Stabuck; Larry Drake played Jimmy as sort of a puppyish Hoss Cartwright). Since coffee is a staple of dinner theatre buffets, props just gave us real coffee in the opening breakfast scene. The raw eggs I supposedly eat in the scene were actually peach halves.
DansssssSalome!

Almost Easter!

I know its not BK Question Day, but I just have to ask: Were you there when they crucified my lord?
-
Were you there when they crucified my lord?
-
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my lord?
-
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
-
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
-
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble , tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree?
-
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

Oh! sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?

Favorite Easter memories:
There was the year I decided to be a Presbyterian instead of Jewish so my mother and I went to a beautiful church for Easter Services. We enjoyed it very much and the music was beautiful. The following Sunday I returned to my regular classes at the temple.
Easter wasn’t a big deal when I was young. I know I went on a few Easter egg hunts. My parents usually hid a few eggs around the house and gave us each a box of Peeps and a few chocolate eggs, but it was no big deal.
It is possible my children have similar memories but I had a great time finding creative non candy treats for their baskets. I would hunt all year. The best fun was filling Craig’s basket the few years he was into Smurfs. I couldn’t really hide candy and eggs around the house because of the pets but they went on Easter Egg hunts elsewhere. I just loved making those baskets.
I also had a great time crating beautiful eggs with the boys. I would find different types of kits for egg decorating. If you blow the egg out of the shells before decorating them they can be saved for years. Alas a few years ago the last of those eggs crumbled. Now I have a basket of alabaster eggs. This is the first year I haven’t left it out. :( I really thought we would have begun remodeling our kitchen by now. :o
-
JMK, it seems to me that the train from PETTICOAT JUNCTION is from Oregon...check the credits next time you watch the show.
Yes, that's what I was saying before, maybe I wasn't clear. The credits on the pilot episode had a big credit (all by itself, the last one, in fact) saying the train was "Courtesy of the Hoyt Hotel, Portland, Oregon." Now why a hotel would have its own train is another mystery. :)
-
And of course the Theme from The Virginian was one of Percy Faith's best-known compositions. Percy also scored a couple of the first season episodes. In fact, the Columbia single of The Virginian b/w Mahoggany (Weill) is the holy grail of Faith collectors. Yes, there is a holy grail for Faith collectors. Yes, there are Faith collectors. :)
-
DR Charles Pogue, Congratulations on the Big 2000!! ;D
-
MBarnum is one ever too old for an Easter Basket? I’m sure your niece looks forward to the one from you. :)
I need to go to Target. Our house guest, who has left, mentioned I might find a bed skirt there to go with our bedding. The one we have doesn’t look very good but it was the best we could find.
Charles I’m relieved you didn’t have to eat a raw egg. :P I had one once in my Orange Julius thinking it would make me feel better. Oh was I sick the rest of the day.
-
DR JOSE my sister can't go to MAMMA MIA! so I just need one ticket. Sorry.
-
I’m waiting for the car salesman to call. He had promised to call last week and let us know the delivery date of my new car. Since I’m taking Bryan my current car I need to let him know when to sell his car, plus I have to arrange for the pet sitter to stay while we are gone. Otherwise I would wait patiently until the car arrived.
Tomorrow afternoon we are taking my car to the shop for repairs before passing it along. Then we will have it painted and detailed. It still has nose and dog prints inside. I know I’m going to cry when I pass this car along-heck I already cried at the thought of it. I don’t think I could bear to part with it if it wasn’t going to Bryan.
Speaking of my car I need to go clean out my junk now. If only that call would come already.
-
Charles Pogue, that song always freaked me out. It got a little graphic, and as kids, we started making up further verses: "Were you there when the nails pierced the flesh?" etc.
Also, at some point during the season, we had to enact the Passion Play in church and the churchgoers were always the angry mob. "Crucify Him! Crucify him!" I always felt like, hey, I want no part of this violence!

Count me in on your New York Tour 2005.
-
George, I didn't even notice, but I find it somewhat peculiar that I should get my 2,000 post finishing a hymn.
-
I don't know for sure where I was, but I was probably watching "I Love Lucy."
-
She of the Evil Eye is gone.
I was not there when they crucified your lord - I was having onion rings at Jerry's Deli.
Home environment is sparlingly sparkling and clean as a whistle. A CLEAN whistle, that is.
I was not there when they nailed Him to the tree. I was at Dr. Hoggly Woggly's having some Texas links.
-
And when they laid him in the tomb, I suppose you were At Musso & Frank's having a crab salad slathered in thousand island dressing...
-
This article talks a bit about The Cannonball.....who would have thought it was so complicated?! ;D

I'm thinking of zipping over to Canterbury Records in Pasadena in my new very red car.
-
Wear a snappy hat when you go!
-
Petticoat Junction Page Four Dance! ;D
-
DR HISAKA thanks for the angel photos. Lovely!
-
Today is National Nougat Day.
still catching up.
-
So the mock-up was bought to be put on top of the Hoyt Hotel in Oregon, but never made it there. The Filmways production company saw it and rented it from the hotel man before he left California.
He and his hotel got a credit on the series.
-
And when they laid him in the tomb, I suppose you were At Musso & Frank's having a crab salad slathered in thousand island dressing...
Eggsactlee.
-
I, too, adored the angel photos. We all need angels.
-
Welcome six GUESTS. We're talkin' about Easter.
-
VERMILLION!
Can one have vermillion vermicelli?
-
Tomorrow for Easter, we shall be going to a friend's house in Burbank for Easter brunch. Last year, William Sanderson from DEADWOOD was there. What a delightful fellow he is too! Hope he'll be there tomorrow.
-
Ann Sheridan played Vermillion O'Toole in some movie. I don't remember the name of it - but her character's name stuck in my brain.
The old Filmways shows used to be filmed at 1040 North Las Palmas - is there still a studio there? What did it used to be?
-
Petticoat Junction Page Four Dance! ;D
How about this for the actual Page Four Dance:

Attention all you DR musician types, those who play, those who write, those who arrange, those who don't... what am I saying? Anyhow, I was just looking at my "Martin Guerre" score (shhh.... don't tell anyone) and there is a musical term I'm not familiar with... the word is
cedez
It might be French, as it's written by a french person, but all of the other markings are in Italian. Any insight?

Which version of the show is your score for? I have the two CDs and they are quite different...just curios. ::)
-
Otherwise, I have no idea what "cedez" means. Sorry. :-\
-
cedez
Yes, they're the little black things you spit out of watermelon. :)
In reality, it means "slow down, you fool, you're going too fast." Or something like that.
-
Rodzinski I look forward to it. Do I have to wit until then to find out what your name is? :)
-
DR George - the score is from the National Tour. It follows the Black CD, sort of it, they re-arranged the song order in attempts to make it better, of course, and it did - at least in Act One. Act Two, sadly, fell on its face. Anyhow, I love the first version of the show the best, and there are some elements that are still in the re-write that aren't on the CD. I'm a big fan.
-
What have I gotten myself into department: I was contacted by a friend of a friend asking me to play synth for a high school production of Pajama Game, which I agreed to (they don't have sufficient instrumental capability among the students, so basically I am the orchestra). Anyway, just got back from a meeting with the choral teacher of the school, who is going to play piano. He told me he can't play the piano part. He also spent a half hour denigrating all the other teachers involved in the production. Methinks this is going to be a verrrry interesting production.
-
Rodzinski I look forward to it. Do I have to wit until then to find out what your name is? :)
Yeah, what the hell is your name, anyway? ;D It seems like half the cast of those two movies you mentioned were in both films. You're evidently not Mick. Are you Tom?
-
Sounds pretty typical to me, DRJMK!
Does the pit get to wear pajamas?
-
DR GEORGE thanks for making the Cannonball MOVE!
-
Favorite Paul Henning show is and always will be GREEN ACRES. In fact, now that I've finished FRIENDS and am halfway through LAURA, I may go next to the GREEN ACRES 2nd season box since they can be watched so quickly.
-
As for Linda Kaye on PETTICOAT JUNCTION, she started billing herself as Linda Kaye Henning in the show's final years.
-
LAURA looks mostly wonderful. Yep, there were a few specks and a small scratch or two, but basically it couldn't be better. Such a classic!
-
While I watch the first couple of years of Bev Hillbillies and Petticoat Junction, I was never much into Cornpone TV and never cared for Green Acres at all. I've never been a fan of either Eva Gabor or Eddie Albert.
Strangely, I always had a mild fondness for Hee-Haw for some reason.
-
I watched PETTICOAT JUNCTION to the bitter end, but I always felt June Lockhart was out of place. I wonder why she ever agreed to join the cast. Did CBS have her under contract and just stuck her in there. It always seemed like such an odd match.
-

I've found this on a French "musical" site:
Céder Ou Cédez, employé fréquemment dans les partitions au début du XXe s., dans le sens de RITENUTO.
Now, I'll let JMK explain what ritenuto means!....
-
I've always loved Eddie Albert, and while Eva Gabor wasn't a huge talent, GREEN ACRES was exactly the perfect show for her meager abilities. The show became actually surreal the more it ran, and I am REALLY looking forward to watching the 2nd season to see when the writers really started doing outlandish things with the characters.
-
This site as become a percussion instrument with an echo: Tom Tom Tom.

-
DR GEORGE thanks for making the Cannonball MOVE!
;D Couldn't have done it (as easily) without you! ;D
-
There, we're back to Academy ratio.
The black man is Oscar Smith. Bit player and, evidently, shoe-shine boy to the stars.
-
The weird thing is, this photo was taken on-set at World Premiere, which Frances was filming. And the token black in that movie was Mantan Moreland. Maybe he had another shoe-shine stand over by Barrymore and Cortez. :)
-
I believe 1040 Las Palmas was and maybe still is Hollywood General Studios. It was, of course, most famously, Francis Coppola's Zoetrope.
-
Strangely, I always had a mild fondness for Hee-Haw for some reason.
Remember the song they used to sing all the time on "Hee-Haw?"
Where, oh where oh are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and thought I found true love.
You met another and <raspberry> you were gone!
Well, it was one of those mis-heard lyric situations. I thought that the lyrics were:
Where, oh where oh are you tonight?
Why did you leave me here all alone?
I searched the world over and thought I found you, love.
You let another and <raspberry> you were gone! :o
I thought that the lost love was found, had farted and left! ;D ;D
-
I am no longer thinking of zipping over to Canterbury Records in my Very Red Car. I have let the day slip away. Maybe I'll just hit someplace in the valley or in Hollywood.
-
Hollywood General....ah!
TCM has all the remastered musicals on tonight....Easter Parade, Brigadoon, Bandwagon, Bells Are Ringing, and The Pirate. Hopefully in stereo!
-
I'm gonna stay up all night and watch 'em all!
-
George, I didn't even notice, but I find it somewhat peculiar that I should get my 2,000 post finishing a hymn.
Hallelujah, baby!

VERMILLION!
Can one have vermillion vermicelli?
If it's in red sauce.

The money goes to the rescue group. We try to have a set amount, $100 (!!!), which covers health expenses, fees for rescuing the dogs from the SPCA, that sort of thing. However, in the case of the Single Mother and her Daughter, who were so clearly getting their lives back in order after the divorce, the fee was reduced by half, der Brucer's discretion.
We'll have to see what happens with Peggy. Her new habit of climbing over the fence has us worried. I've already mentioned to der B the possibility of finding another foster home for her.
-
Rodzinski I look forward to it. Do I have to wit until then to find out what your name is? :)
Make her wit, Rodzinski! Make her wit!
-
Who's the black man???
The shoe shine boy.
-
Well, I did MY share of work today. I mowed both the front and the back yard. Then I took B & B to check their Pee mail.
Hee Haw was a "must see" in our house since my Dad was a C & W singer at one time.
I'll never forget the one night my Dad sat bolt upright at one song someone was singing. He said it was his--he had wrote it but I don't think he had it copywrited.
I also remember watching Petticoat Junction and Green Acres.
Speaking of Eddie Albert--have you ever seen his son, Edward Albert? He used to guest on Beauty and The Beast, talk about woof!!! ;D
As for the walk in October, we'll see. As I said, I do want to see Chitty and if Michael Ball/Crawford come over for Woman in White, you know I WILL be there.
We'll just have to see what events unfold between now and then. :D
-
I am no longer thinking of zipping over to Canterbury Records in my Very Red Car. I have let the day slip away. Maybe I'll just hit someplace in the valley or in Hollywood.
I sincerely hope that you don't "hit" anything!
I'm so glad the puppies have homes now! You said hubby wasn't to pleased. I take it he changed his mind.
-
Re: cedez
Yes, they're the little black things you spit out of watermelon. :)
In reality, it means "slow down, you fool, you're going too fast." Or something like that.
So "cedez" is another way of saying "Feelin' Groovy"?
-
Make her wit, Rodzinski! Make her wit!
Thanks to JMK I have the first name. ;)
-
THE PIRATE? Hmmmm....
I have it on laserdisc, and it looks very good, very Technicolor, but I'm thinking I might want to record this and burn a DVD of it.
-
SWW & DerBrucer it was nice you reduce her fee. Did she also receive a coupon for neutering him?
Are you reimbursed at all for your expenses? Is there a vet that charges the rescue group or do you go to your own vet?
I wish we could do what you do. It isn’t easy.
Danise did you learn the song/songs from your father?
If you like Edward Albert you might want to rent some of his movies. I haven’t seen him in much lately.
I enjoyed your photos of NY-thanks.
-
I sincerely hope that you don't "hit" anything!
I'm so glad the puppies have homes now! You said hubby wasn't to pleased. I take it he changed his mind.
Need to go back and add to the story. Yes, hubby changed his mind, particularly when he saw how well Dakota got along with Baxter.
-
Yay, JRand54 and Rodzinski, the package arrived! I have some watching and listening to do! Thanks guys!
-
SWW & DerBrucer it was nice you reduce her fee. Did she also receive a coupon for neutering him?
Delaware is a lot more lax about neutering the animals than California. No coupon, since there's no budget, but no mandatory neutering either.
Are you reimbursed at all for your expenses? Is there a vet that charges the rescue group or do you go to your own vet?
Doc Chris charges the group. Other than that, we're spending our own cash.
-
OOpps I owe you pictures of NY, DR Jane. I just haven't gotten around to sizing them all for the web.
The words to the song go....
Like the weather your heart changes with each season,
Springtime, Summer, Fall and Winter too,
And though I'll never understand the reason,
I'll keep wondering why each season changes you.
In the Spring time, you told me that you loved me.
In the Summer time you said your love was true,
In the Fall I felt your love was changing,
In the Winter time you told me we are through.
-
I remember reading a mystery story once titled Vermilion. It was the first in a series of mysteries, about a gay bartender and his gal pal, a law student. (The other books were titled Cobalt, Slate, and Canary. Thinking back, I'd loathe decorating in those colors, particularly together.)
-
DR SWW--Would coupons help? If every DR would take the time to clip the ones they can't use in the Sunday paper and send them to you, could you use them for dog items?
-
We've been interrupted by a cacaphony of barking! Marty, Mikey, Peggy...well, the whole crowd, started up raising the racket, because two deer were loitering in our front yard!
-
Delaware is a lot more lax about neutering the animals than California. No coupon, since there's no budget, but no mandatory neutering either.
Danise take your time with the CD.
Nice words to the song. Do you have a recording or tape of your father singing it?
Nice idea about the coupons.
SWW I’m surprised your rescue group doesn’t require the new families sign something saying they will neuter or spay. You mention the budget is low. Does that mean it isn’t taken care of before the dogs are adopted out? Is the rescue group or others working to change the laws in Delaware? It is shocking to me neutering isn’t mandatory.
-
I don't think any rescue group around here would allow a dog or cat for that matter to be adopted without spade/neutering.
I didn't have to neuter Bear but I did and Brandi was fixed when we got her.
I'm very sorry to say that I don't have a recording of Dad singing that song.
-
Danise, I'm sorry too.
Neutering is required here as well.
-
Two new posts on that other site. One defending DR Elmore and another telling a certain someone to move on and forget this stupid fued..
-
What other site?

The rescue group does have the new families sign a paper saying they will neuter/spay their new family members, but following up on that signature is difficult at best.
As for the SPCA, unless the shelter does the neutering/spaying themselves, the best that could be accomplished would be charging extra for animals that haven't been treated when they are released. Here in Sussex county, the SPCA doesn't even make sure the animals have had their rabies shots! Seems there's a law here that the shots have to be given by a licenced veterinarian, and not by a "mere" qualified trained member of the SPCA staff. The SPCA doesn't have the funds to keep a vet on call; they don't even consider keeping the animals alive as a major part of their agenda. They were about to slaughter Peggy and her pups simply because they had mange, and only gave the Rescue group a few hours to find them a home. The only reason they kept one dog alive that had lost a leg was because the dog was evidence in an abuse trial (which is why the dog lost his leg). Tripod, luckily, found a home shortly after the trial, or he'd have been put away the first chance the SPCA got!
Making matters worse is the charge by the SPCA that they are underfunded by the state to even do the little that they do! The state is seriously considering cancelling their contract with the SPCA, and instead hiring the job out to the lowest bidder. I don't even want to think about how conditions will worsen when that happens!
-
It's not even worth bothering about, Danise. Just a bunch of snippy buttcheeks trying to cause trouble.
-
No pics of the deer, there wasn't enough light, but they sure were close to the front window this time, only fifteen feet away or so. And they totally ignored the dogs! :D
-
Snipped buttcheeks sounds like something exotic on an upscale and trendy restaurant's menu. Or at least listed as one of the daily specials!
Wasabi-Glazed Snipped Buttcheeks Braised in Chilean Seawater, served with Pickled Pearl Onions, Okra, and Raw Calamari on a bed of Vermillion Vermicelli, sauced with a Caramel/Soy Drizzle. $48.95

Ok, BK.
Has anyone here heard of a Valence N-Charge Power for notebooks? I just spoted that on the Best Buy site. It claims to add 5 hours of time to your notebook.
I'm still looking at the Averatec Notebook. I'm hoping there will be a big Easter sale.

Good Easter kids 45 I had: "The Easter Egg Parade" by Jimmy Wakely.
Well yeah, plenty of Toms around here, so I'm just Rodzinski.

I believe the law in Oregon requires a vet to give a rabbies vacination. A vacination is required by law. I'm guessing it is everywhere.
-
I feel very bad for Terri Schiavo's parents. Instead of simply reporting all the controversy over this I wish the news would focus on the need for directives.
-
Bruce,
Will you have an Easter Egg hunt in your yard? May we all show up in our spring finery? I prefer to hunt for Easter Eggs rather than rolling them on lawn with a spoon or your nose or whatever it is they do at the White House. All those grass stains!!!
-
I feel very bad for Terri Schiavo's parents. Instead of simply reporting all the controversy over this I wish the news would focus on the need for directives.
It is such a shame. I know that whole situation made me get a living will as well as my Mother. I wanted to make sure my wishes would be known.

My favorite Easter dinner as a child was the Wasabi-Glazed Snipped Buttcheeks my grandmother would make. Ah, the memories!!!!
-
My grandmother was from the South, so she'd occasionally make Snipped Buttcheeks with a Coca-Cola gravy.
-
...I wish the news would focus on the need for directives.
The cable news networks have given considerable coverage to the need for directives, including anchor folks talking about getting theirs taken care of. (One advantage of the interminable coverage that the cable networks give current stories is the added coverage they give to collateral issues: the recent sex-abuse/child murders casusing much discussion on predator registration and mandatory incarceration; the school-house slayings giving lots of air time to the issue of indentifying troubled kids before the fact; the bathtub drowning of ones children causing ,lots of discussion of post partum depression/psychosis,including the critical distinction; and of course kids killing kids with guns giving air time to "when the hell will parents learn!".

The Animal Rescue League is struggling to find funds to get the dogs current vacinations. The local vets are reluctant to spay/neuter young animals. As a Libertarian, I would oppose any effort to impose a legal requiremnet to spay/neuter an animal (requiring the government shelters to spay neuter prior to adoption I can support). Also, rural southern culture does not look kindly on nut-snipping males.

I think the buttered and filleted buttcheeks with parsley, rosemary, and thyme, are wonderful. Particularly if the cheeks are served on the side.
-
I am, at this very moment, listening to that 1960S super hit MONKEY IN MY HATBAND! LOL!
-
Yes, that's what I was saying before, maybe I wasn't clear. The credits on the pilot episode had a big credit (all by itself, the last one, in fact) saying the train was "Courtesy of the Hoyt Hotel, Portland, Oregon." Now why a hotel would have its own train is another mystery. :)
Yes, indeed, the train in PETTICOAT JUNCTION was from the Hoyt Hotel, which was down by the train depot in Portland. Also, at one point the Hoyt Hotel was the host to a lounge run by Portland's most famous drag queen, Darcel.
One of the first things I did when I moved to Portland was to seek out the Hoyt Hotel. No, not for the drag queen, but because the train from my favorite series of all time came from that hotel. Although the train in the TV series is usually idetified as the one used in THE PERILS OF PAULINE and tons of other movies in Hollywood history, the train that was actually used on the soundstage for PETTICOAT JUNCTION was the one from the Hoyt Hotel.
Bea Benaderet was gone from many of the episodes in the 67 -68 season and a double was used in a few episodes. Bea's character, Kate, returned to the show for a couple of episodes, but you could tell that she was very ill. She died in October of 1968.
-
0h, the Easters we would spend hunting for Bea Benaderet.....
-
Do you know what the dog's name was on "Petticoat Junction"?
-
"Dog"
-
Michael-- I do remember the 60's but somehow "Monkey in My Hatband" is not a part of them. Who sang this "Superhit"?
-
I knew someone who named their dog, "dog". I thought that was kinda neat.
-
Many ladies in Hollywood wanted to Bea Benaderet.
-
DR DANISE would you like some CD's of Dark Shadows music.
DRMBARNUM if you figure out what that song is about, let me know. I've got a monkey in my hatband.
-
DerBrucer good for the cable news channels and thanks for passing that along.
I understand your view on not passing certain laws but I feel something should be passed to help prevent so much suffering. If we could get those puppy mills put out of business there might be fewer homeless pets. That would be a start. The shelters should definitely be required to forced to take action before releasing the pets. Why are your local vets against neutering? It seems so archaic.
-
I briefly had a cat named Cat. I resued her off the streets and didn't plan on keeping her.
-
Bruce I don’t believe you have broken the record for the most rain-not yet anyway. I just read the following:
With nearly 36 inches of rainfall so far this season, we have the distinction of surviving the second-wettest year ever (the wettest takes one back to 1883-84). It's barely 2 inches more for the record.
But still, let the rain come, drip by drip. We've got until June 30 to reach 38.18 inches of rain, and at least then we can brag that we survived the heaviest rains in Southern California history.
-

Thank you, DR Jrand. I have most if not all of them on CD. I should have asked you if you wanted a copy of them.
-
I have a big Panama with a PURPLE hatband (to wear with my tan shoes with pink shoelaces), but there is no monkey, to my knowledge, in the hatband.
-
"Monkey In My Hatband" is from the great movie star, Arch Hall Jr.
It was a tribute to artist Paul Frank.
-
Darcelle has her (his?) own club now and has for years and years. Betsy got dragged up on stage there the night her radio pals took her to her bachelorette party there. We have a hilarious picture of her with Darcelle.
Funny you should mention the dog in Petticoat Junction. The liner notes to this Columbia House tape I just auctioned mentioned it. It said that while the dog's name was never used in the series, its name was actually Hiram (I think I'm remembering that right, it was definitely an "H" name), and that one episode was actually called "Hiram Comes Home."
-
You be Frank and I'll be Ernest.

1. The "suffering" is casued by irresponsible adult animal parenting - not by un-neutered animals. If a family wants to have their children experience the wonder of a family pet giving birth to and rearing pups, and they accept there responsibility for finding homes for the pups, I think that is fine (There is a little 4H Club in this city boy).
2. The "puppy mills" are pretend to be in the business of providing AKC registerable pups to buyers, many of whom intend to show and breed.
3. The local shelter is State Owned and operated under contract by the SPCA. They have a new "policy" that all adopted animals must be spay/neutered; however, they do not have the means to do it, but, nonetheless, they charge adopters the neuter fee and tell them to "contact us later" to arrange for neutering. Note: the privately run Delaware Humane society neuters all their animals prior to release - but not the State.
4. The local vets aren't "against neutering" they just don't want to do it on young animals (I'm guessing fear of litigation is a big factor). Castration predisposes to highly malignant prostatic cancer and is medically ill-advised for any dog under 1 year, and, in the case of larger breeds, under two years. ( Vet Site (http://www.showdogsupersite.com/kenlclub/breedvet/neutr.html))

Here's HIGGINS (http://petticoat.topcities.com/higgins.htm)
The dog on Petticoat Junction, whose real name was "Higgins", was named simply "Dog" on the show. They did occassionally call him "Boy", such as "here, boy!", when looking for him, but his official name was "Dog".

No groaning is allowed here at HHW. :)

I knew someone who named their dog, "dog". I thought that was kinda neat.
My friend Holly has a friend (no, it really is a friend of a friend :)) who named her dog "Woof." Holly told the story of when Woof got out and the owner ran down the road yelling the dog's name, "Woof! Woof! Woof!" ;D
-
Hearts United for Animals has a link to a new ad against puppy mills:
http://www.prisonersofgreed.org/Ad.html
A dissappointing campaign.
It makes no effort to distinguish between "puppy mills" and repsonsible breeders.
It offers no concrete suggestions for corrective legislation.

The funniest part about the "Woof" story was that the owner hadn't lived in that neighborhood for very long...and her neighbors didn't know her very well (some, not at all), and to see this woman running down the street yelling "Woof! Woof! Woof!" doesn't make for a good first impression. ;D
-
Yes I do DRDANISE, thanks.
THE SADIST - whew! Well Arch Hall, Jr is the whole show!
Next time you watch THE BANDWAGON - just as Nanette changes tempo and goes into: "Get goin' Louisiana, Hey, Louisiana Hayride..." sure enough on the left a teamster is walking around behind the scenery...LOL! Look quick!
"You got more scenery in this show than Yellowstone National Park!"
I love THE BANDWAGON!!!

And of course Benji and Arnold the Pig are both from Mooresville, Indiana. One time Arnold the Pig was in the Old Settlers Parade with the Town Marshall. The picture was on the front page of the Mooresville Times and the Marshall was identified as the one wearing a hat.

I left to make some hard boiled eggs and when I returned I had lost my internet connection-and I wasn’t using the phone. Email wasn’t working either. I had four emails in my outbox going nowhere.

Now that is really funny. We trained get to go potty on command. Our mistake was using the word potty. It was rather embarrassing at times. If there is a next time the word will be hurry.

Good Easter kids 45 I had: "The Easter Egg Parade" by Jimmy Wakely.
Well yeah, plenty of Toms around here, so I'm just Rodzinski.
So, why do you get to be Rodzinski, and I don't?

Re: Weird names for pets and other small things department: I shall never forget many, many years ago in NW Portland I was at a laundromat doing my laundry and there was a young hippie woman with her maybe 3 or 4 year old daughter in there, too. The daughter was running around the room, screaming and yelling and basically running amok. The young woman looked up and in an exasperated tone shouted, "Be good, Karma!!"

LOL.....I love to hear Unique and Euphonious names.
Time for EASTER PARADE!

Oh yes, DRMBARNUM - we are the Hollywood of the Midwest. You can't spit without hitting someone who was in a movie or a tv show at one time or another.
-
Spent the afternoon listening to Pajama Game OCR while reading the conductor's score (I get the handwritten conductor's score since it has all the instrument allocation markings. The choral director who can't play the piano gets the neatly printed piano score, of course). It's always interesting to see how Goddard Lieberson would cut even a measure or two here and there to make the song flow more for a listening audience and, probably, to save a little time. Interestingly, there's some stuff on the album that's not in the score. I assume maybe it was cut somewhere along the way.

In Hollywood they usually just ask for an autograph. :)

DrBrucer regarding #1, a petition for a license could cover that.
Not having male dogs in years I wasn’t aware of the prostate problem. I will have to ask my vet about it. What about females? Is there an issue against spaying them young?
The pictures on the add make it apparent to me they are going after the puppy mills, however, your take on it makes me think twice about it. I’m going to ask my friend in Pennsylvania what her opinion is. I do agree concrete suggestions for corrective legislation might be nice. The responsible breeders I know would like to put the puppy mills out of business but understandably want to protect themselves.

MBarnum, hopefully in October.

Jeez, leave it to the straight Jew to know how to spell the drag queen's name. I have also been to Darcelle's current club. One of my dearest friends in the world was a waiter there.

Watching the Republicans scurry department: There was a hilarious report on the evening news about how Delay and Frist who a week ago wouldn't shut up about Schaivo are now refusing to talk about her now that the latest poll is out showing 75% of all Americans (and 68% of all Republicans) disapprove of Congress injecting itself (pun not really intended) into this very private decision.

Sick humor department: WARNING!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU ARE EASILY UPSET!!!! Did anyone else's paper have the somewhat disturbing but ultimately hilarious story of the bowl of chili containing the human finger at a Wendy's restaurant? A Wendy's spokesman went into great detail about how the finger could not have come from any of its chili suppliers since there would have been a medical emergency and an ambulance called had a chili production person lost a finger. Now here's the funny part: since they're not sure where the finger came from, the FBI has taken the finger's print (singular--only one finger was found) and is running it through their database to try to find a match.

I had a male cat (who passed away a couple of years ago) that I named Peter Thomas (or P.T.). The adoption agency that I got him from had found him wandering on Easter Sunday and had named him "Peter." I told them I refused to call him that. I said, "There is no way I am going over to the lady who lives next door and ask her if she has seen my Peter."
They agreed to the name change.

But think of the opportunities lost:
"Would you like to play with my Peter?"
"Would you like to see my Peter do his tricks?"
"Peter, Sit Up!"
"My Peter loves to be stroked."
And we could all testify how much TCB loves his Peter.

This cat talk brings to mind the famous interchange between Johnny Carson (was it? or was it Groucho Marx?) and some actress who had her pet in her lap.
"Would you like to stroke my pussy?" she asked.
"I'd love to if only you'd get that damn cat out of your lap first."
-
What about females? Is there an issue against spaying them young?
Actually for the gals the opposite is true:
Spaying helps to reduce the incidence of mammary tumors, if performed before the first heat. It does not eliminate the possibility, but does statistically reduce the risk. So, however, does lactation, as in humans. A bitch which is not a breeding candidate should usually be spayed before the first heat.

Wikipedia reports (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pussy)
An apocryphal story attributed to entertainer Johnny Carson is that Zsa Zsa Gabor appeared on the Tonight Show with a cat in her lap, and asked Johnny if he wanted to pet "her pussy." The supposed response was "I'd love to if you'd just take that damn cat out of your lap first." Carson maintained, "Regrettably, it never happened."

Earlier Jane bemoaned the lack of coverage on Living Wills (associated with the Schiavo case).
Equally troubling is the almost total silence of the fact that her brain damage was the result of Bulimia!
(From WebMD (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,151564,00.html)):
According to the Terri Schindler-Schiavo Foundation (search), Schiavo collapsed in her home not because she had a heart attack or stroke, but because her body chemistry was horribly out of balance.
Court documents state – and medical records suggest – that the then-26-year-old woman suffered from bulimia (search), an eating disorder.
In that, she is not alone. An estimated 1 to 4 percent of American women suffer from bulimia. The central symptom of bulimia is repeated cycles of binge eating followed by purging. Purging means self-induced vomiting and/or abuse of laxatives, diuretics (water pills), enemas, fasts, and/or excessive exercise.
And these people – the vast majority of them women – run a terrible risk. Terri Schiavo, for example, collapsed when her potassium levels (search) dipped frighteningly low. Her heart stopped, which likely caused decreased blood flow to her brain, leading to her brain damage.

Once you know the crew member comes in during the second half of the "Louisiana Hayride" number, it's really pretty easy to spot him. Amazing that it wasn't reshot.

I've had a DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES evening. I had recorded last week's rerun and I knew tonight's was next in progression, so I saw two hours of the show tonight. I had only seen each of the episodes partially when they first aired. I think I have now caught up with the show entirely and can see tomorrow's episode and know what's happening completely.
-
DearReaderLaura, I love your new quote!
-
I have set the DVR and will be recording THE PIRATE tonight. If the quality is up to the laserdisc's or better, then I convert it to a DVD-R. I haven't read anything about Warners working on mastering THE PIRATE for DVD. If they're working on more Judy Garland films, I'm not aware of it. Perhaps it'll be talked about at the chat on Tuesday night with the WB honchos.
-
Oh my gosh TCB, you just really cracked me up! LOL!
-
It made me laugh, DR MATTH - there he is! They must have had a lot of takes and maybe this is the only one that for one reason or another everything ELSE was right - or maybe they were looking only at Nanette - who was a beautiful woman!
-
TCB - modesty forbids me writing what I am thinking.
-
DRJRand54, I watched EASTER PARADE with you...but many miles apart! LOL!
You know I have never seen that movie all the way through...it was fun to see Joi Lansing pop up in a few scenes...and Sara Shane was in it too (actually she was in the same scenes as Joi Lansing...but hard to recognize with her brunette hair). Sara was known as Elaine Sterling at that time in her career.
And sorry, but Judy was a fool to fall for Fred over Peter Lawford! Yowsah!!! :D
I am taping BRIGADOON and THE PIRATE...two Gene Kelly movies that I have never seen.
-
I watched the Gene Tierney Biography on the LAURA DVD. I was surprised there was no mention that what happened to her and her first child was the basis for the plot of Agatha Christie's THE MIRROR CRACK'D FROM SIDE TO SIDE. I mean, it's not just suggested by the circumstances of her situation, it is a direct steal with only the names changed to protect the innocent.
-
DRMBARNUM aren't the dialog clips on that CD great? You have seen Wild Guitar haven't you?
-
Yup more musicals coming up. Don't miss Dean Martin in BELLS ARE RINGING starring the wonderful Judy Holliday!
-
I agree with you about Peter Lawford in EASTER PARADE. (Fred was old enough to be her father.)
And if she hadn't been taken off of it, she WOULD have had him for a real boy friend in ROYAL WEDDING. Fred would have played her older brother.
-
DRMATTH - that is one of the most tragic life happenings I have ever read about. And when it turned up in the movie (I didn't read the book) - I was shocked.
-
Yup once we got into the 1950's I wish Fred wasn't the "love" interest. He was so much more perfect as the "father figure" in THE PLEASURE OF HIS COMPANY.
-
GRRRRRRRRRRRR they're not broadcasting BRIGADOON in stereo!
-
DRMATTH - that is one of the most tragic life happenings I have ever read about. And when it turned up in the movie (I didn't read the book) - I was shocked.
At least Agatha waited a respectable number of years before plugging that real life tragedy into her book. I wonder if there was much said about it at the time of the book's publication.
-
I didn't even know the story until Gene published her book....did Agatha's come out first? Was the story common knowledge before then?
-
Are they showing the Cinemascope version of BRIGADOON or the widescreen version? Like SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS, two versions were shot (but I thin Minnelli shot them from the same huge camera rigging). TCM has shown the widescreen version in years past but the last few times it's been on, it was the Cinemascope version.
-
I didn't even know the story until Gene published her book....did Agatha's come out first? Was the story common knowledge before then?
THE MIRROR CRACK'D was published in 1962, so Gene's book came later, I think. Do you have Gene's book? I've never read it.
-
It's letterboxed, MATTH - but I don't know which version it is. Sorry.
Hmmmmmm.....I had the paperback of Gene's book. It's around somewhere. You can find it all the time at the thrift store....and check it out of the library. It's a good read. One of the better "written with" autobiographies.
-
I'll flip it on to check, but just for future reference: if there is a LOT of black space in the bars above AND below, it's Cinemascope. If the black bars are relatively narrow, it's simple widescreen.
-
DRMBARNUM aren't the dialog clips on that CD great? You have seen Wild Guitar haven't you?
Yes, and I loved the radio spot for THE SADIST! LOL!
I haven't watched WILD GUITAR yet...I may have an Arch Hall Jr. film festival soon, however...maybe WILD GUITAR and EEGAH! I should also pick up THE CHOPPERS and make it a triple bill.
Did you read Arch's interview in FANGORIA the other month? It was pretty good.
-
Hmm, I must pick up ROYAL WEDDING...it is on 50 million different budget DVDs..it is just that I didn't realize what a
hottie handsome talented actor Peter Lawford was back then.
-
I just checked and logged back on to comment. BRIGADOON on TCM is the widescreen version, and that's why it's not in stereo. The widescreen version only had a mono soundtrack. The Cinemascope version (on the current DVD release) has the surround stereo track.
-
Same goes for Jean Pierre Aumont...have heard the name, of course, but saw him for the first time (that I know of) on last nights WHAT'S MY LINE...whoa, I would eat escargot with that Frenchman anytime (just don't tell Jacque Bergerac I said that!).
-
ROYAL WEDDING is very enjoyable, but I can't attest to the quality of the film on those budget DVDs since they're all taken from public domain copies of the film. The one they show on TCM is much better quality than any public domain copy I've ever seen.
-
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.....oh well.
-
OK, I'm off to bed now. Hope everyone has pleasant evenings (and enjoy whichever MGM musicals you happen to watch/record).
-
Royal Wedding was on last Sunday!
Poor Peter and his messed up right hand. His fingers are bent and he can't straighten them. He usually holds something in his right hand or puts it in his pocket.
He is very handsome in EASTER PARADE and in LITTLE WOMEN and GOOD NEWS as well.
-
Time for me to log off as well. WATCH Bells Are Ringing, MB! It's a lot of fun with Dean and Judy Holliday. Jean Stapleton and Eddie Foy, Jr and Frank Gorshin are in it, too!

No, Mr. Barnum, you mean Fred was a fool to fall for Judy when he could have had Peter (Yikes, again with the Peter jokes)!

My goodness, what a busy night we've had here at haineshisway.com. LOVE that!
I'm back from a lovelier than lovely dinner - great food, I must say.
I'm sort of tired, but they're having quite a noisy partay next door (the next door nearest my bedroom environment), so I may not be able to sleep until later than I'm used to.
Perhaps some late night denizens will show up and we can laugh and laugh until we cannot laugh anymore and then we shall laugh again.

So, why do you get to be Rodzinski, and I don't?
I'm just better at it, I guess!
-
I should take this time to mention that my cat is named KILLBOT.

MBarnum-
THE CHOPPERS is definitely worth seeing. And you get to hear "Monkey in My Hatband" in context, which adds exactly zero to its coherence.

You know what...all I did today was watch movies! It was actually rather fun...oh, I guess I did go run some errands and I did take a long nap...but aside from that I watched movies...but now the sandman is creeping up on me and I, and Freddy the cat, must hit the hay.

Good Morning!
WOW! 10 pages of posts! I just finished reading Page 2... I should make it to Page 10 before I fall asleep...
In short, what a wonderful day on many accounts and many levels!
What a wonderful time I've had in New York City the past three weeks.
An angel has truly been watching over me. And it was another angel, Penny, who brought me here. At this time. For reasons known and unknown. And exciting!
...I just put the DVD of Sunday In The Park With George in - Nick has the Sondheim Collection Boxed Set. Who knows, I may end up staying up watching the whole show. It's very appropriate for Easter Sunday. And very appropriate for this visit since this was show that made me stick with this crazy Business. Love and Art. Art and Love.

Posts read...
The dial-up internet seems VERY fast tonight. Strangely fast...
-Of course, now that I've said that....
-
DR Jrand - One ticket. Got it. I'll be putting in the ticket request in person when I see the company manager on Tuesday. So, if things happen to change again by then...
-
DR SWW - As for the buttcheeks... You forgot the "blood orange foam, the dusting of fennel pollen and the gelee of Dom Perignon".
*If you really want a gastronomic splurge and experience, you should try Jose Andres' special "tasting" menu at his restaurant within a restaurant at Cafe Atlantico in DC. -It's really more like a very roomy bar/counter. There are something like 20-30 "courses". A shot glass of this. A spray of that - and sprayed from a mini-mister, like a breath-spray. A "lick" of something else. And he even makes things that look like those Listermint tabs - gelatin based - you pick it up off the plate, put it on your tongue. And sometimes there are even courses that are fed to you!! Fun, adventurous and tasty - most of the time. And considering the "experience" of it, the price tag is actually not that bad. -But if add the wine pairings...
-
DR Jane, MBarnum, Rodnzinski, Ben, et al - As for this walking tour being nosy... Who's gonna have time to talk? We'll be feasting of chocolates from Chocolate Bar, Vosques, Marie-Belle and Violet; cupcakes and pastries from Cupcake Cafe, The Donut Plant, and Magnolia; assorted baked goods from Gruenbaum's, H&H, Balthazar, FatWitch, Eleni's and Amy's Breads....
-And that's all before lunch!!
;D
-
Easter in eight count them eight minutes.

Well.. As Mandy Patinkin starts "Finishing the Hat"...
When I went out to the house after today's matinee, I went out to greet my friend, Jennifer, who I knew had come to see the show. But when I got out to the house, I noticed there was another person waiting for me. Anthony! "WOW!!!" (Not DR Ben's ever-lovin' Ant.)
Anthony is an actor I met while he was working and living in Richmond for a while. He made the big move up to NYC about six years ago. He started off well, but things started to take a turn for the worse. He wasn't getting cast. His "day jobs" started falling through. The last thing I had heard about him was that he was living out of his storage unit in Queens, and sleeping on the subway. He was homeless for a while.
So, imagine my total surprise - and JOY when I saw him today! Fortunately, his e-mail address hasn't changed after all these years! I had sent out an e-mail early last week to my usual "list". And Anthony was still on it, even though it had literally been years since I had heard anything from or about him.
He looked great. Very healthy. And it's obvious things are going well for him. He couldn't stay long after the show since he had to run to work, but he made the time to come see the show today! Originally, he was just going to leave a card for me with the House Manager, but, thankfully, I decided to change back into my street clothes AFTER going out to say HI to my friend, Jennifer.
-And the card he gave me was a graphic of a bunch of New York Taxi cabs all lined up in a row... :)
We will definitely catch up some more, a lot more, once I'm back up here.
As DR PennyO says time and again in her show... And then, A Miracle!....
-
I've been burning CDs that have been on my computer, but I'd just never burned them to CD. I was printing booklets and I ran out of black ink! AARRGGHH!! I hate it when that happens.
