Title: THE BUNNY HOP
Post by: bk on March 27, 2005, 12:00:43 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've egged the notes, you're hunting for gaily colored Easter eggs, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be directly after they're finished attending the Easter sunrise service.

In the musical, A Year With Frog and Toad (I don't know about the original books), they say that bananas are the funniest fruit.  I've always thought that kumquats were...well, at least the funniest name. ;)

...Ah, "Beautiful"... which I think is truly one of the most beautiful moments in the show...

Well, I'm probably gonna turn off the TV/DVD after Act 1 is finished, so...

It was great seeing my friends, Jennifer and Mark, at the show today.  Jennifer came to the matinee, and Mark came to the evening show.  They're husband and wife, so they took turns watching their kids.  :)

After the matinee, Jennifer and I walked down to the Cupcake Cafe for a snack.  I tried one of their Walnut Cupcakes with Maple Icing today for the first time.  It definitely won't be my last!  Soooo good.  -And they really do do a nice job decorating all the cupcakes with buttercream flowers.  Then I walked Jenn over to the Ferry, and headed back towards Penn Station...

Whilst chomping on a Spicy Beef Jamaican Pattie in Penn Station - I went there to pick up my train ticket for tomorrow - I heard a "Jose?!?!"  I turned around, and there was one of my former students from Catholic University!  "Hewwwoo Sswoott!"  -I was still chomping away... ;) Another too brief, mini-reunion, but a good reunion nonetheless.  And he's a "working actor". YEAH!

After tonight's show, Mark and I headed over to Rachel's on 9th Avenue for a post-show bite to eat.  He had their Tomato-Leek-Smoked Bacon soup and the always delicious, Rachel Burger.  I had the Chopped Salad and the Grilled Calamari special.  Everything was very good.  Oh, and we split the Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie for dessert - it's basically an oversized Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, but with nothing artificial in it.  Pure, total richness!

I then had a call from my friend, Max... We'll catch up again later in person too.  Then I headed over to Sin Sin on the Lower East Side.

What a place!!  And I had no idea the Lower East Side was so hip and happenin' late night!  Lots of people and car traffic, and it was already close to midnight.  Sin Sin was fun - a bit loud and warm - but fun.  I didn't stay too long, but I did get a chat in with my friend, Shannon, the birthday girl.  And another old friend of mine, Billy, was there too.

Billy and I ended up leaving at the same time, so we walked over to Broadway to catch the A back uptown.  On the walk uptown, we caught up on each other's lives.  He got off at 42nd Street...

On the rest of the ride back uptown, I was treated to some impromptu entertainment on the train.  A group of young men started a sort of challenge "dance" - more or less footwork.  Their friends starting beating out rhythms, and beat-boxing and rapping.  Then two guys started "trading fours" of fancy moves and footwork...

And then I was at 168th...  And now I'm here... And now "It's How Up Here" has started... and something tells me I'll be watching the rest of Sunday in the Park with George tonight... And probably crying like I always do when I watch this show...

But it will be a good cry.  It always is.

But, I've never eaten a kumquat in my life.  Are they any good??

As a jam or jelly, yes.

From  World Wide Gourmet (http://www.theworldwidegourmet.com/fruits/exotic/kumquat.htm):

Quote
Description
The fruit of a tree related to the mandarin, having small, narrow, pointed leaves, and grown for its small fruit

Grown in Africa, Asia, America as well as Brazil, the kumquat's flesh as well as its skin can be eaten. Its colour ranges from orange to orangey-red. It is the smallest variety of the citrus family. Its flesh divides into 3 or 5 segments; it has little juice and contains large seeds for its size.

Cooking tips

Macerated in rum

Excellent for mousses, sorbets and jams

Hints - sprinkle with lemon juice to prevent blackening if you use them in salad

If you eat it raw, cut in half and press each half in your hand to combine the kumquat's two textures Kumquat and mango jam, flavoured with Rivesaltes muscat

Grand Marnier soufflé, kumquat coulis and white chocolate shavings

Spread a slice of gingerbread with kumquat purée to accompany foie gras

Grilled duck breast with turnip and kumquats, with a sweet lime leaf sauce

Hmm.... KUMQUAT!!!

-I like Kumquats.  Talk about a sour fruit!  But totally delish when combined with other ingredients.  My piano teacher in college would make a Kumquat Chutney.  It was a perfect accompaniment to Grilled Pork - or poured over some Vanilla Ice Cream!

OHH!!!...  Just popping back in for a second...

If you're using AOL...  DO NOT respond to any e-mail that comes from "billinginvoices@aol.com".   It's another scam.  I just received one claiming that my credit card had been declined - and since it is the time of the month when I am billed...

Thankfully, I was able to use AOL's Live Billing Help to clear up the matter.

I had thought the e-mail was suspicious since it came from an "@aol.com" address. But remember any e-mail from within AOL will NOT have the "@aol.com" as part of it's address.  And any official e-mails from AOL are also supposed to have a special Blue mail icon.

That's all for now...

And, once again, Goodnight.

*Depending how rushed in the morning, I may not be logging until I get back to Richmond tomorrow night...  If that turns out to be the case, HAPPY EASTER!

-Oh, and my grade school had great Easter Egg hunts.  Thinking back, I can't imagine what the candy/treat budget was for those hunts.  Each grade got to go on their own hunt in the little park area at the front of the school.  And there was always plenty of goodies to be found.  And if you happened to find these special, hollow ceramic eggs, it meant you got an even bigger treat!  -And I think I still have a yellow ceramic egg from fourth grade!

-And my piano teacher in college would let each of her students select one of the pysanky eggs out of the basket on her desk in the studio.  She would work on the eggs throughout the year.  And they were still "full" - not blown out.  Some amazingly intricate designs and pictures.  Always at least four colors of dye on each egg.  I still have a few of those too - the insides just eventually dry out over time, years. They become quite delicate. -Of course, if you happen to break one somewhere along the line... P-U!

OK...

'Nighters...

DR Matt Hough said yesterday

I watched the Gene Tierney Biography on the LAURA DVD. I was surprised there was no mention that what happened to her and her first child was the basis for the plot of Agatha Christie's THE MIRROR CRACK'D FROM SIDE TO SIDE. I mean, it's not just suggested by the circumstances of her situation, it is a direct steal with only the names changed to protect the innocent.

So did Gene Tierney murder the person who gave her measals?

Easter Bonnet by Irving Berlin

In your easter bonnet,
with all the frills upon it,
You’ll be the grandest lady in the easter parade.
I’ll be all in clover and when they look you over,
I’ll be the proudest fellow in the easter parade.
On the avenue, fifth avenue,
 the photographers will snap us,
And you’ll find that you’re in the rotogravure.
Oh, I could write a sonnet
 about your easter bonnet,
And of the girl I’m taking to the easter parade.

DR MS - Ms. Tierney writers in her autobiography:

Many years later, at a party I was introduced to a woman a few years older than I.  She shook my hand and said we had met before.  I didn't remember.  The woman told me she had been in the WACS and that she had broken a measles quarantine to meet me because "You were my favorite movie star."  I was stunned, why should I tell her the heartbreak and pain she had caused me?  And since that day I have never cared to be anyone's "favorite movie star."

Since I am not expected at my friends' house for Easter dinner until 3 p.m., I have been thinking about which DVD to watch in the early afternoon. It will probably be EASTER PARADE since when I watched it from the DVD boxed set, I knew the sound was mono and having heard THAT soundtrack dozens of times on the laserdisc, I listened to the John Fricke/Ava Astaire commentary track instead while watching.

I want to go look at some notebook computers.  I think I have decided on which one I will get but I want to go to a couple of stores.

But, I've never eaten a kumquat in my life.  Are they any good??

We will have a busy walk in October. Besides all the places mentioned by Jose we (Jane and I) want to go to Myers of Keswick and Tea and Sympathy's store. They are not high end food places on the order of Cupcake Cafe but they are both great British (and Brit-run) stores in the village which feature products from the U.K. We can get scotch eggs at Myers, along with English soda brands and other wonderful things. The Tea and Sympathy store is an offshoot of the Tea Parlor just a storefront away. It's a charming but VERY SMALL shop that serves great English tea service. The store has lots of candy, magazines, Plum Puddings and hard sauce and other British ephemera. It's a nice fix for the Anglophile.

DRMichaelShayne, you omitted the glorious verse to the song!

Good morning, all!, and Happy Easter!  Of all the holidays in the Christian calendar, I find it my least favorite, even though it's the raison d'etre for the religion.  The mythologist can tie it in with the return of spring, Persephone, the phoenix and more, but to me the day meant dressing up and attending church with my mother's entire family on the one day a year the entire group showed up for church.  Then the huge dinner was either pleasant or disastrous, depending on which warring family factions showed up or did not.  Of course, nothing will top the Christmas day with my Mother screaming at my brother and sister-in-law for being terribly late and spoiling the dinner, while she threw their gifts at them on the front lawn and bellowed for them to get the hell out!

Ah, holidays!

An elderly Canadian woman ended up in the morgue a bit too early.

The unnamed 87-year-old resident of a Surrey, British Columbia, extended-care facility, was sleeping deeply Saturday night when her roommate quietly died.

An ambulance driver came to pick up the dead woman, but forgot to check wristbands to make sure he had the right patient.

"The individual did not follow proper protocol by checking identification," Helen Carkner, spokesman for the local health authority, told The Province newspaper of Vancouver, B.C. "For whatever reason, he took the wrong person."

The healthier roommate slept on as she was placed on a gurney, put in an ambulance and driven to Surrey Memorial Hospital  across the street.

She woke up, very much alive, lying on the gurney in a hallway in the hospital's morgue.

Morgue workers had already noticed that their freshest corpse's legs were still moving.

The ambulance driver, recently hired, was immediately fired.

Happy Easter!

My throat/bronchial ailment has blossomed "nicely" to the extent that my own mother didn't recognize my voice on the phone this morning.  Our son was aghast when I declined to attend church, until I pointed out that no one wants a cough like mine sitting behind them.  My doctor yesterday prescribed an antibiotic and cough medicine and, fortunately, ruled out pneumonia.  Heck of a way to spend one's vacation, huh?

On a culinary note, I now have a kite-shaped cookie cutter!  At the grocery yesterday, I found an egg-shaped one that my son reshaped for me into a perfect kite.  So, when the book group comes Thursday night to discuss The Kite Runner we will have shortbread kite cookies with our tea.

JMK, I was thrilled to read last night your post about the evening news piece that DeLay and Frist have been forced into an embarrassing silence about the Shiavo case now that the poll numbers show an overwhelming opposition of 75% of Americans and 68% of Republicans oppose the Republicans (who in the Clinton days used to rail about the Rule of Law) trying to flout the laws of this land and do end runs around them.  Nice to see the system still does work and that people still have enough gumption to get appalled when a political party still makes hash of them.  I always hoped that when the Republicans pushed their overweening arrogance too far the American people would get on their haunches and roar back.  Perhaps if they pull a few more of these bone-head grandstand totalitarian take-overs, we might sweep a bunch out of office and change the complexion of Congress and restore the checks-and-balance system.  It's good to know the American public is still doing a little of the checking and balancing with the poll numbers.  But it's tough when you have a President who has been quoted as saying:  "I don't have to answer to anyone."

It's a shame we have lost a perfectly good political party  by their shameless pandering to the extremists under their tent.  Maybe missteps like this will make the sane ones in their party move back to the center where most of the country still is.

Interesting article in the paper today about DeLay who had to make a similar decision not to recusitate his own father when he was in a coma.  Of course, his minions are claiming it's not the same thing at all.

I'm off to my sister's for home-made chocolate chip pancakes, then eventually we'll end up at our parents' for dinner (I don't know what we'll be having).  So, have a fine day, all!

No so fast, McGee.

The spring clock turn-overs run from 20 Feb (Brazil) thru 28 Apr (Egypt): 26 Mar - Australia; 27 Mar - Europe; 1 Apr - North America.

For you Bobby Darin-ites I commend  TIME (http://www.timeanddate.com/time/dst2005a.html) so you can never claim "I didn't know what time it was".

After dinner we watched SHARK TALE. The poor writers used every possible pun on various brand names, celenrities, movies relating them to the sea. Not the greatest story in the world, but it was very, very colorful and I laughed a lot.

Unless you have a widescreen television, such enhancement wouldn't mean anything to you anyway. But on a widescreen TV , the picture will look squeezed if it's enhanced for widescreen TVs (also known as anamorphic enhancement). One must use the picture format key on the remote so that the squeezed picture will be expanded on our widescreen sets. When one does this, the scan lines double in the DVD transfer, and the picture fills more of the screen and thus becomes sharper at the same time.

Memo to Jane:

RE: TV News covaerage

While we get deluged with Terri Schiavo, what with special sessions of congress, multiple court cases, protesters holding vigils, out raged phone calls to talk radio - and all about a unique case, one single person.

Meanwhile, burried on page 462 of the press reports we find:

Quote
Every state, and the federal government, has a Web site with a list of sex offenders. According to the latest Bureau of Justice  statistics, (he) is one of more than 386,000 registered sex offenders in the United States.

But those are just the ones who have been caught.

At least once a month we get headlines about some known sex offender comitting some heinous crime, yet we have no protests, no special sessions of congress, and few outraged phone calls to talk shows - where is the WE'RE MAD AS HELL AND WE AREN'T GOING TO TASKE IT ANY MORE outrage?

DerBrucer I read today of the alleged bulimia.

I have seen the outraged public over sex offenders, after a neighbor does something to a kid.

I know how you feel about the grandlad in the bathroom alone.  I hated when I had to let my kids go.  At eight you can’t take them with you and you certainly can’t go into the men’s room.  I remember the year one of the father’s was a class “mother”.  I was so relieved he could go with the boys on the field trips, especially when we were in Philadelphia.

I am thinking that I may not go to Los Angeles in April, as I was planning....the line-up for the Ray Courts Show just isn't very exciting (with the exception, of course, of our own BK). I would like to see Diane McBain, but I have met her before, and 1940s actress Beatrice Gray would be interesting, but that is about it. We shall see...I have to make room reservations before the 1st of April if I want the special rate (which I would want, of course).

I am actually leaning more and more towards New York...I have never been, and I bet it would be fun.

Of course I could just stay home and save my money for the family vacation to Hawaii, which is to occur in 2006...and I would hate to be the only one not going  :(

The end of DOCTOR DOLITTLE, the Rex Harrison epic.
The end of STRAIGHT STORY, tractor driving movie
The last third of GUIDE FOR THE MARRIED MAN. What a brilliant movie! Always fun to watch.
The entire CAMP on dvd. Fun movie that takes place at drama camp upstate. Some dynamic musical numbers, great opening. Some wispy plot threads, but worth it for the Broadway in-jokes.
Part of MYSTERY MEN, which I enjoy.
The end of THE PARENT TRAP remake.
What a weird grouping of films!!

GUIDE FOR THE MARRIED MAN is quiintessential 60s comedy. Matthau and Morse make a great team. Gene Kelly did an admirable job bringing out the broad comedy but leaving some intellectual content. The "deny, deny deny" sequence with Joey Bishop is hilarious.

I noticed that he comes across a fairly mature in the snippets of the live concert pieces of the CD when the guys are talking, while some of the Archer's seem like typical immature 18 year olds...I am guessin Arch was more interested in making music while his co-horts were more interested in making it with the local girls! No problem, MBarnum! Glad you enjoy it.

How fitting it is that on Easter, I should RISE to Godly status!!!

(Technically, Easter is over here, but not on the official site clock)

Let's see, what else have I got? GUIDE FOR THE MARRIED MAN features appearances by Carl Reiner, Jack Benny, Wally Cox and scads of other folks.

AND a catchy theme song by the TURTLES with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse.

Have you seen CACTUS FLOWER? Mark also introduced me to that film...and it was quite funny too.

Somehow when I think of one film I always think of the other...thus that is why I brought it up...that and I am getting very sleepy!

Anonymous San Francisco band The Residents have a one-minute long song called "Easter Woman". It's on an LP called "The Commercial Album" that has 40 1-minute long songs. The lyrics to "Easter Woman" are as follows:

Easter Woman came today
And took away my wife
Took her through an open doorway
To the afterlife.

Well, Freddy is demanding that I let him inside, so I shall do my duty and then also hit the hay...5:30 am comes awful early.

I have not seen CACTUS FLOWER. It's just never crossed my path.

As this is post #501, I want to thank all who made this possible. Who knew I was capable of such things??

Alright, I must hit the road to Dreamland myself. Multitudes of blessings to all.

Jed, I forgot to tell you sorry about the Huskies. But at least they didn't choke away a 15-point lead in the last 4 minutes like Arizona did!

Good Evening!

Wonderful closing show.  And the sun was out (again) when I left the theatre.

The train ride back was basically uneventful.  It appeared the Amtrak oversold the "Reserved" train.  People were stuck sitting in the Cafe Car and on the floor areas at the end of each car from city to city.  But I had a nice window seat, with a very still and quiet aisle-neighbor.  I made some lists, and got a nice nap in.

Once back in Fairfax, I supped on some of the Easter dinner leftovers at my parents' house: lamb, chicken, french fries (gotta love the nieces and nephew), and peas and carrots.  Oh, and some chocolate too!  Gotta have the chocolate!

Then the drive back to Richmond - dark and drizzly all the way, but an easy drive.

I've unpacked my bags, gone through my mail, and I'm finishing up a load of laundry.  I should be in bed by 3:00.  Up by 9:30.  On the road by 10:30.  Back up in Fairfax (again) by 1:00.  Leave for the airport by 3:00.  Fly to Memphis at 4:30...  And then chat at whatever time it will be in Memphis. ;)

And did anyone notice the unfortunate juxtaposition of news headlines this morning on AOL?  Right under the teaser for the latest on the Schiavo case, there was a teaser for the article dealing with soprano, Deborah Voigt, going public about her gastric bypass surgery in order to lose weight.

*Ms. Voigt received a bit of "bad" publicity last year when she was fired from a production at Covent Garden for being too "ample" for the director's concept of the role she was engaged to sing.  And as it turned out, she had the surgery the day she was supposed to have sung the opening performance of the opera she was released from.

In any case...

Sheesh!

I'm sitting here in my living room, and it smells like:

A) My roomie put a fresh refill in the plug-in air freshener.
B) He sprayed on too much cologne earlier.
C) His boyfriend - who is in town - sprayed on too much cologne earlier.
D) My roomie spilled his cologne.
E) His boyfriend spilled his cologne.
or
F) ALL OF THE ABOVE

-My eyes are actually bothered by it.  And my nose is going on overload.

Ah, well...

I've been home for a little bit now, and my housemate's cat is climbing all over me.  My housemate (Peter) is at his girlfriend's house ;) and won't be home tonight.  His cat, I think, misses him.  She keeps scratching on the kitchen cabinets.  I open them up so she can explore, but then she still scratches on the open doors.  What's that all about? ???

And where are the photographs of Easter partaying and pyjamas, that is what I, BK, would like to know.

Well, at my parents' house house, we didn't take pictures.  We just looked at pictures of my parents when they were young.  It's amazing how different someone can look after only 40 years! ;) Anyway, my dad had a set of negatives of him and one of his brothers and their mother.  I took them home with me.  I wanted to see if I could scan and make prints of them.  Well, I'm sure that a professional photography place would do much better, but here's one that must be from the early 1960s.  The top picture is of my dad and the bottom half is of my dad (in the middle), one of his brothers (I don't know which) and their mother, my grandmother.  It's somewhat washed out, but it sort of worked!

Well...  It's been a long day... I'm gonna put the last load of laundry in the dryer, and just take it out and fold it in the morning...

I, Wussburger

Goodnight.
