Title: SOUTHERN FRIED NOTES
Post by: bk on March 28, 2005, 11:59:15 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you've sipped your mint julep, you've sung Mame on your plantation, and now it is time for you to post until the southern fried cows come home.

Good Morning!

Jerome Kern songs - So many to choose from - and it always surprises me when I come upon a listing of his songs, and see how prolific he was.  But for now:

Long Ago (And Far Away)
Your Dream (Is The Same As My Dream)
All The Things You Are - Which has one of my favorite verses.

My favourite Jerome Kern song of all time is easy. It is IN THE HEART OF THE DARK.  My favourite version of it is the only version of it I've ever actually heard, sung by surperb Ms. Barbara Cook on Ben Bagley's Jerome Kern Revisited album (with album cover art by Bk's close personal friend and artist of the Kritzer books,  Harvey Schmidt).  It is probably one of my top five or ten favourite songs of all time.

Jose, does Memphis still have the Marching Ducks at the Peabody Hotel?

Woody, I found your list of Southern do's and don'ts very funny and true.

DR Pogue - Yes, I believe The Peabody does still have the Marching Ducks.  It's actually on my itinerary for the week.  I've been to Memphis a couple of times before, but since I have my days free, and I'm just a few blocks from The Peabody...

-Oh, but I was surprised to see that "Elvis Presley's Memphis" had closed on Beale Street.

BK, I've been fortunate to see Mr. Gambon on stage three times...and once on the street, coming home from the theatre along Garrick Street, talking on his cell phone...The Lovely Wife and I saw him in SKYLIGHT, CRESSIDA, and THE CARETAKER.  He was brilliant in all three.  And in CRESSIDA, he had an acting moment that is still one of the most electrifiying moments I've ever seen on stage and one of the greatest acting lessons I've ever had.  In the play, he is an Elizabethan/Jacobean actor training boy actors for the stage.  The young actor is declaming a speech using all the standard gestures of the day that are supposed to accompany it.  And it is gauche and awkward.  Gambon then does the same speech with all the same gestures in all the same places and you see it come alive and becoming rich and moving.  An amazing moment!

We've also seen Juliet Stephenson on stage as THE DUCCHESS OF MALFI in London (Greenwich actually) with the brilliant Simon Russell Beale and in a wonderful play with Frank Langella at the Ahmanson, the name of which I don't recall, though she played a female artist during the Renaissance.  Both she and Langella were terrific in it!  A very interesting play too...wish I could remember the name!

"The Way You Look Tonight," with Kern's melody matched by Dorothy Fields' lyric.  True elegance.

I'm partial to Barbara Cook's rendition, myself.

Jerome Kern:

"I'm So Busy" .  There are just too many to list. "I've Told every Little Star", "I Have The Room Above Her", "The Last time I Saw Paris", "Babes In The Wood" and "You Are Love".

Jerome Kern....well ALL OF SWING TIME, but especially "A Fine Romance" and "Pick Yourself Up" and "The Way You Look Tonight."

But if I could only choose ONE - it would be "They Didn't Believe Me" and now I have to think of the singer I heard sing it.....hmmmmmmm

OMG - I just remembered who I loved hearing sing "They Didn't Believe Me"! It was Miss Dinah Shore - she sang it one night on her Dinah Shore-Chevy Show and made me cry.  I was ten or eleven years old.

"And when I told them....how beautiful you are.  They didn't believe me....they didn't believe me....."

Good morning, all!  Chat was indeed sparkling, and this morning I'm all sparkled out.  I think Spring may have landed and dumped a few allegies into my nose.  Usually I walk around complaining about the headaches and nose and someone says "the pollen count is high today."  It seems too early for a high pollen count, but that's where I'm laying the blame.

Another day with those pesky BABES; we're on the Act One Finale, only 25+ numbers to go (16 numbers in Acts Two and Three and 11 numbers in the Appendix)!

I love Jerome Kern!  My first memory is my Aunt Dorothy's jewelry box, which played "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes."  My next is the popular versions of the same song and "I've Told Every Little Star."  I was lucky to work on the complete 3-disc SHOW BOAT recording, and I think every note of the score is touched by the hand of God.

Complete Scores:
SHOW BOAT
SITTING PRETTY
HAVE A HEART
SWING TIME
LEAVE IT TO JANE

Songs:
TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY (Oh, Boy!)
NOT YET (Oh, Lady! Lady!)
ONCE IN A BLUE MOON (Stepping Stones)
RAGGEDY ANN (Stepping Stones)
"WHERE HAS MY HUBBY GONE" BLUES (The Night Boat)
LOOK FOR THE SILVER LINING (Sally)
POOR PIERROT (Cat & The Fiddle)
EVERY LITTLE WHILE (Men of the Sky)
THE FOLKS WHO LIVE ON THE HILL (High Wide, and Handsome)
THE THINGS I WANT (High Wide and Handsome)
LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY (Cover Girl)

And there are more!

Now off to work and Donald's show.

There are so many and DR Elmoore listed so many of them.

Just to mention that he also orchestrated a lot of Kern material for studio recordings of Kern scores.

Among them the film songs for the 3cd "Complete" Show Boat recording. I am sure he can talk more about them

Actually, DRMichaelShayne, I've scored very few Kern songs.  On the Kern-Herbert project for which I'm currently editing BABES IN TOYLAND, Herbert was my bailiwick and Kern was Russell Warner's.  When I was part of the Bruce Kimmel factory during the Varese Sarabande days, along with pushing recordings of an unexpurgated Blitzstein THREEPENNY OPERA and JUBILEE, I pushed a songbook series ncluding Kern and Rodgers & Hart because I loved their songs so much.  Our BK had a lot on his plate already, and I'm sure I was lost in the shuffle.

I just listened, for the first time in a long one, to Mr Guy Haines singing "What Can You Lose?," which has a connection to Mr Kern through Mr Hammerstein, and I was struck not just by Mr Haines' performance but by mine!  I usually listen to my work and think about what I should/could have fixed, but enjoyed it quite a lot.

I had sent you a pm about the CD but the other suggestions were made as a post. I just can't remember which day I posted them so I can't direct you to where they are if you haven't seen them.

Thanks, by the way, for the kind comments about my CD.

Ben-
You read Reidel's column in the Post today? Lays it all out in Black and white about Daniel D. He and Beach haven't been speaking, etc. Cast was going to mutiny if he stayed on.
All I know is he made a friend of mine cry on the phone. Twice!

Kern-
I'm not even going to try to be clever and think of something obscure.  "The Folks Who Live On the Hill", "Poor Pierrot," "I've Told Ev'ry Little Star", "Ol' Man River". Pure brilliance.

Thanks for the link Rodzinski. I looked for Mr. Reidel's column this morning but couldn't find it. Too bad about his behavior. Theatre should be fun. You're on Broadway getting more money in a week than most people get in a month! I know that it can be stressful but come on. It's especially sad because it seems to have destroyed (according to the column) a friendship. Maybe the reviews did go to his head.

Moving on, I am listening to the Radio Show. It takes an unseemly amount of time to load each clip, longer than usual but at least it's working. I'm listening to Mr. Orbach sing the title song from PP.

Yes I did, unfortunately headphones at work is absolutely not an option and our home computer is so slow that the real player won't work, it just keep timing out.. we may get the occassional word but it just doesn't work as a m,thod for listening to the  show.  If anyone has the urge or the capability to record the radio show for me I would be happy to pay the cost of the CD or tape and the postage :D

Like most of the great composers, there are so many favorites of Jerome Kern, and my tip-top favorite varies with my mood. But how could one not list the entire SHOW BOAT score as it contains such classics. The man was a musical genius.

However, if I had to choose one song right this second, I'd chose "I'm Old Fashioned." Julie Andrews did a lovely version of it on one of her early recordings, and Nan Wynn's version on the soundtrack (singing for Rita Hayworth) of YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER is steller, too. It's such a great song that it can be sung as a ballad or as a swing tune with equal effectiveness.

Another Joan Morris fan! We love her. Anthony and I saw her with her husband, William Bolcolm and Max Morath at the Lucille Lortel theatre this past summer. We spoke to them after the performance and they were very generous with their time. Anthony brought a CD which they kindly autographed and we spoke about music and performing with them for almost a half hour. It was a wonderful experience. Ginny, I know you're from Michigan. Did you go to U of M at Ann Arbor? Joan Morris is on the faculty there (I assume you already know that).

DR ELMORE - I bought the SHOWBOAT 3-disc set on LP oh so many years ago.  I love it.  We were doing a production of the show and it was invaluable to all of us (I was playing Frank and loved having the dance music to the songs & all the movie songs as well)!

Was it "Les Liaisons Dangereuses"? - Langella played  it at the Ahmanason in the fall of 1988 with Lynn Redgrave and Kathleen Quinlan; Juliet was nominated for an Olivier for a role in the same play in 1986, perhaps she had a role at the Ahmanson.

Watching EASTER PARADE a couple of times last weekend - I really like Fred Astaire's solo "Drum Crazy" and I especially like the way it's orchestrated when Fred and Judy walk into the Ziegfeld Roof and it's played.  Lovely melody.

And it's funny how a bit of the staging seemed to turn up in SITR a few years later.  I mean the fiddle playing routine and the stacked boxes from "Drum Happy" as the finale of "Moses Supposes".....interesting.  Maybe Gene had already done some work on EASTER PARADE before he broke his ankle.  At least we know he saw it.

Of course they are NOT exactly the same!  But they have similar ideas behind them.

Ben - Yes, I went to Michigan, but was gone from there before William Bolcom joined the faculty in 1973 (the year I left) and Joan Morris in 1981.  It was actually Elmore who introduced me to their recordings when we worked together on a local production of Look Homeward, Angel.  I've only seen them perform once, here at the Sorg Opera House in Middletown, in 1985.  We had an experience similar to yours, talking to them afterward.  Very gracious and down-to-earth.

It is SUNNY(!!!!!!!) here in Memphis.  It's 70 degrees right now, and supposed to get a few degrees warmer!  So...

I slept well.  The keyboard should be set up by 2:00, and sound check is at 3:30.  I'm gonna head in early to get some hands-on practicing in before the sound check, and stay a little bit after the sound check too.   Then most likely, I'll head back here to the hotel before the show.  -A nap may be in order.  We shall see...

Bolcom & Morris - William Bolcom's Gershwin Songbook record was one of the first records I remember checking out of the library.  And I believe it was one of the first CDs I bought - as soon as it got released (if it got released - I have a couple Bolcom & Morris discs).  And Bolcom's "Graceful Ghost Rag" - and his other piano rags - is a favorite.

Joan Morris' performance/recording of her husband's two set of cabaret songs are truly quintessential.

They gave a concert at my alma mater when I was a sophomore in college.  A wonderful evening.  A little bit of this, a little bit of that.  And they were both very gracious and generous with their time after their recital.

Yesterday Jose posed:

Quote
Well.... Remember, I have been living in Richmond, VA - The Capitol of the Confederacy - off and on for the past 17 years...
...Or was it the "The CapitAl..."

You say capital, I say capitol...

They seem to be used interchangeably (by mistake) nowadays.  I remember being taught the difference back in fourth grade... But I still get confused.  And I've forgotten the nemonic device to remember the difference/proper usage.

You have your choice of at least two memory aides:

1. Congress with an O meets in the Capitol with another O.

2. Remember the "o" in dome. The capitol has a dome.

Now I know the South has a hard time accepting the fact, but Richmond is NOT the "The Capitol Capitalof the Confederacy"! The war is over - the south lost - there is no more "Confederacy"!  (You could get away with "erstwhile Capital".)

der Brucer

PS While researching capitol/capital issue I stumbled on a website by Paul Brians, Professor of English at Washington State University, author of Common Errors in English Usage (http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/index.html) wherein he gives aid and comfort to the miscreants who insist that a preposition is an OK thing to end a sentence with.

DR Jrand, I promise, I am NOT nit-picking, especially at you, but for the sake of accuracy, the number's title is "Drum Crazy." I agree with you completely, and I especially like the orchestration of it on the Amsterdam Roof set.

I meant to re-watch EASTER PARADE all weekend, this time to watch the movie and listen to it rather than to the commentary, but I never got around to it. Now, I have a stack of DVDs selected for this week, and it's not in the stack!

Too many DVDs, too little time.

I can understand both sides of this sad and emotional situation,   much easier when you aren’t involved.   When my father was in the hospital I seemed to be the only one aware he was dying.  When an email arrived telling me a breathing tube had been inserted, Keith just told me I had email and then hid on the other side of the side.  I’m surprised the neighbors didn’t hear me screaming.  Wow, I can write this now and laugh. :)

Woman Who Found Finger in Chili to Sue Restaurant
Tuesday, March 29, 2005

SAN JOSE, Calif. — A woman who bit down on a partial finger served in a bowl of chili at a Wendy's restaurant in California said she was disgusted by the experience, while her attorney has filed a claim with the franchise owner.
Anna Ayala (search), 39, of Las Vegas, was dining at the Wendy's in San Jose, Calif., on March 22 when officials said she scooped up the inch-and-a-half long fingertip in a mouthful of chili.

"Suddenly, I chew something that's kind of hard, crunchy," she said. "I spit it out. At first I wasn't sure what it was. We started investigating and poking it, [with] other people, too. That's when we find there's something that looks like a nail.

Yes, the Jerome Kern song is Sure Thing, one of Guy's favorites, and mine, too, with a lovely lyric by Ira Gershwin.  Guy is doing it as a duet with Miss Kerry Butler.

When my father was in the hospital I seemed to be the only one aware he was dying.

Sad, but not unusual. It generally seems that the patient is more ready to accept the dying than are the relatives. How can we give aid and comfort to those we love most, at a time they need it most, when we cannot accept the reality of the situation?  When my Mother was dying of the consequences of a breast cancer left untreated too long, relatives would constantly critisize my "flippant" attitude about her illness ("the falsie looks good") and dying ("if we got a casket now, you could use it for a blanket chest until you needed it") - and all were totally aghast when I delivered my Mother's favorite nightgown and slippers to the Mortuary for her burial - hey, that's what she wanted! And how you do for your loved ones if you can't talk about "what's wanted".

der Brucer

PS: The ever critical relatives (is that redundant?) were equally appalled at how freely we poured the booze at the reception after the funeral. It seemed to me that Mom would be appalled if the guests at her party were treated any other way.

PPS: I also learned a lesson about "Funerals are for the living, not the dead".  My Dad left it to me to pick out a casket.
The family had had discussion about the issue, and the consensus was clear - the simplest plain old wooden box would be perfect - don't waste money on something to bury in the ground. The Funeral Director directed me to the basement where the caskets were displayed (how appropriate) and said, "They all have the prices marked, pick what you'd like - if you have any questions I'll be upstairs".

This will be easy, I thought - go for the cheapest. Well, the cheapest was some God-forsaken (pardon the expression) alluminum monster with grey flocking. No way, said I, am I going to stand in church next to this monstrosity! So we upped the ante to appease my pride.

The one good thing about this whole Terry Schiavo fiasco  is that its getting familues talking about what they would want done in a similar situation.  We have also been informed by my parents that neither of them want a wake or a burial.  They both want immediate cremation after any usuable organs are donated.  This is also what DH & I agreed to for ourselves.  At least that is  (hopefully) one less argument to deal with when the time comes.

Interesting article at canoe.ca.  Apparently Rupert may be the next cross-over to The Amazing Race.

Also interesting, last week TAR was the most popular show in Canada (3.43 M), followed by Idol #2 and 3, Survivor #4 and CSI #5. Medium #6.

Also good news it says that Tru Calling will be starting season 2 March 31st.

DerBrucer I thought my disgusting comment was following your toe fungus thing, not the moving comments about your mother’s funeral-sorry.
In the Jewish tradition a simple coffin is the best.  Of course all styles are provided.  Fortunately my sister and I agreed on the simplest one at the funeral home.  I’m sure your choice gave you comfort.

A sense of humor at these times is needed.  I have known people who add personal items in the coffin so I thought it would be nice to send my father off with a box of See’s candy which he ate almost every day of his life.  My sister said she didn’t really want a box in there as it would rot.  I just about bit my tongue and nodded solemnly.

Re:  DeLay and Schiavo:  The ABC News last night revealed that DeLay removed his comatose father from life support 10 or 20 years ago.  Funny how that seems not to have been widely reported.

Re:  William Bolcom.  Well, here's my William Bolcom story for the day--Portland had a little mini-Bolcom fest a few years ago and suddenly everyone discovered Mr. Bolcom's original manuscripts are near impossible to decipher.  So guess who was hired to "clarify" things?  Oy.  You would not have believe them--first of all they were not on standard manuscript paper, but rather this incredibly wide paper with maybe 7 or 8 staves to a page.  They thankfully provided me with CDs of the scores I was deciphering so I was able to figure out what the scribbles meant.

I think there's one more Re I meant to post about, but it escapes me at the moment.  :)

I love the 3-CD complete Show Boat, but especially "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man," the extended up-tempo version and scene...not so much as a ballad, though.

I have the B/R serial on VHS!  From years ago.  Is that the one with John Duncan as Robin?  And a 1949 Mercury batmobile?

I bought that VHS set for my friend's son years ago...he loved it, and so did I!

In fact he loved Batman and Robin so much he would dress up as them by wearing his underpants outside of his pants and using a towel as a cape...he insisted on going to the store dressed that way...and when he was refused, he simply put his regular clothing over top of his "Batman" outfit! He looked quite lumpy.

In what has to be one of the most shameless publicity stunts since David Merrick, the Weisslers have announced that Sweet Charity WILL open after all, and the opening WILL be performed by Christina Applegate.  Charlotte D'Amboise will play the first two weeks of previews.  The opening has been pushed back to the beginning of May.  Anyone who doesn't think that this was planned from the minute that Applegate injured herself, well, I have a lovely bridge you can buy.

They get great press (already happening), a miracle apparently takes place (Applegate going on and saving the day), and the critics get bamboozled by it all.

Here is what else I predict will occur prior to the opening:  All of the "improvements" will be gone and the show will be what it always was.  This has already been happening, but I predict that everything else that still hasn't been put back will be.  They've already put back half the opening scene - next to come will be the opening song.  They've already cut the new song that replaced I Love to Cry at Weddings.  It was replaced with I Love to Cry at Weddings - BRILLIANT!  And, I predict that The Rhythm of Life will soon have its original arrangement back.  What am I, Criswell all of a sudden?

Mark my words.

I taped the BATMAN & ROBIN serial off AMC years ago. I can remember a theater in my town running serials on Saturdays, but I didn't go to that theater consistently to ever see all the chapters of a story. So I'd see a chapter of BATMAN & ROBIN and some months later a chapter of ZORRO'S BLACK WHIP. Only saw the complete serials as an adult when stations started running them on Friday nights. Saw all the FLASH GORDONs and both SUPERMAN serials. Also CAPTAIN AMERICA and BUCK ROGERS.

Yes, Jrand54, it is true!  HERCULES in its initial airing  on NBC will be in one-three-hour showing.  This was done, to my understanding, for programming reasons.  There will be a four-hour version that will air, I'm told, later on USA or Sci-fi and may also have another screening on NBC in the summer that will be four-hour.  The DVD will be four-hour and everywhere else in the world it will show as a four-hour.  I've seen neither the three or four hour version yet.

I am just now very angry.

I went into my room, to check on something, and found two books with their covers torn off and some of the pages torn as well.  Half of one of the covers, the hardback, was devoured.

What makes this worse, from my perspective, is that these were books I hadn't read yet (Mordden's Sing For Your Supper and the Julia Child bio.  Books are things, the contents are ideas, and I hadn't had the chance to enjoy them.

I'm very sure Peggy is the culprit.

Evening folks.

I  am sooo tired tonight.  I don’t know why really but I am and I plan on hitting the sack early tonight.

All this talk about fried chicken.  Guess what I had for dinner?  Three guesses and the first two don’t count.  You got it.  Fried chicken from KFC.  I decided to try the extra crispy.  I think I’ll stick to original from now on.

I had some very upsetting news regarding my bus to work.  They want to change the route.  The new route would cut my stop and I would have to drive quite a ways to catch the bus.  I wrote them a scathing e-mail.

In part, I told them they should change the name from HARTLINE to something else (rhymes with HART) because they don’t have a heart and they don’t give a crap (I used another word) about their customers.  I’m sorry but I’m mad and you just don’t want to mess with me when I get that way.

What I was going to tell you last night about the laptop.  Sunday the new neighbors to the East (not to be confused with the new duplex they are building on our West side) stopped by to look at their house.  They had two young children with them.

Bear (not knowing they are the new neighbors) barked at them.  They proceeded to yell “shut up” at Bear.  They were not very nice at all and certainly didn’t make a good first impression on me.

I told Mom we had better get a privacy fence put up toot sweet.  I don’t want any problems with them saying Bear or Brandi bit one of their kids (not that I think B & B would) if they stick their hand through the fence.  Sigh.  So Long, lap top.

I think I am going to HATE having neighbors.

Thank you, DR George.  What should I be looking for from you?  I can’t remember anything.  Pictures from NY?

I stopped by Walmart and they wonder of wonders they had my photos!  Yay!  I need to do another fifty or so and then I’ll be all caught up.  I think the final count was somewhere around 125 pictures I took so have more to share with you all when I finish resizing them for the web.

I heard that work is a mess.  They managed to crash the data base while I was gone and haven’t been able to enter anything since Wednesday of last week.  I’m told there are piles of paper work (quite literally) waiting for my return on Thursday.   Do I really have to go back?  :(

You know, I meant to tell you guys that I brought the want ads and the real estate section of the NY Times home with me to read for kicks and giggles.  To my surprise, there were several jobs I honestly think I could apply for and get.  The apartments are expensive but I think making what the jobs said they’d pay, I could swing one.  Just a thought……..

Oh, and speaking of funerals and such.  I have a touch of graveside humor as well.  I had to buy two graves when I got mine and my burning question is if I die without marrying, what will happen to that second grave?  Will they resell it and I’ll end up with a stranger beside me?  Or will I get a refund?

Did I tell you that I’m tired?  I think it might be time to turn in.

Laters all.

Nice way to come into the neighborhood, yelling "shut up" to someone's dog.

Pogue, I just hope Nicole Brown and Ronald Goldman get a few moments in the spiritual world to meet up with Mr. Cochran.

Evening folks.

<SNIP>

Thank you, DR George.  What should I be looking for from you?  I can’t remember anything.  Pictures from NY?

I think I'll let it be a surprise.  Here's a hint:  it starts with a C and ends with a D (and there's nothing in the middle of the word ::) ).  Cryptic enough? ;) I hope you don't already have these...I mean this...okay, "these."  There are several of them. ;D

DRPogue, I agree!  My first reaction to the new was "who cares?"  But then I realized I did care for what he and others have done to the judicial system.

To preserve my chance of earning the "used no sick leave" incentive this quarter?  Actually, I don't approve of such things, because I think it encourages people to come to work when they shouldn't.  I've only earned it once in my seven-plus years at DML - and that was totally inadvertant!

Will you see them before they air?

I nickel and dime my vacation time, but I hardly ever use sick leave...not that I'm bragging, but I hardly ever get sick!  Anyway (again, not to brag), but I have 119 days of sick leave available to me, but only about eight days of vacation! ::) (Just a few months ago, I only had 4 hours of vacation!).

The worst part is is that when I retire, I can (of course) use all of my vacation time, but I lose all of my sick leave.  We can't buy back any of our sick leave.  That just makes me sick! (no pun intended ::) )

We can't use more than three days in a row without a doctor's note.  I have been told by co-workers that I should start using sick leave for "wellness days."  I haven't yet, but I plan to.  And (shh...don't tell anyone) I have called in sick a few times without actually being sick, but when I did that, I never left my house!

Yes, I'll admit it-- I WAS errant and truant for the chat last night.  Do not banish me; I ask you.

Oh so much good Kern.  One of my favorite of his songs is "Nobody Else But Me" sung by Cleo Laine in the London Revival of "Show Boat."  I loved the orchestrations from that production, although all of the voices are not my favorites.  Ms. Laine's IS one of my favorites, though.

"Hey Feller" is another fave (this time Music Guy's would have to rank #1 with me).

"Misery" (cut from the original) from the recent revival is stupendous.

The lyrics to "All the Things You Are" are so wonderful that anyone who simply sings them correctly is fine with me.  Ella Fitzgerald would be among those.

"Long Ago and Far Away" as well as the entire scores to "Swing Time" and "Show Boat" are some of the best things EVER written (IMHO).

Three contestants on AMERICAN IDOL tonight were truly impressive:

Constantine

Anthony

Carrie

Naturally the judges fell out over Nikko (who finished well, but started off low and wavery) and Vonzell (pitch problems and horrific phrasing), neither of whom greatly impressed me. (Nikko's number remained the busiest the longest amount of time.)

My prediction for the bottom three this week: Anwar (his worst vocal performance by far), Scott (too much unsteady falsetto), and Jessica (bland song done by a bland singer).

Carrie

Anthony

Least favorite performances were Scott and Jessica.[/font]

Well, Howdy, Jose!  How was your first night?
Title: Re:SOUTHERN FRIED NOTES
Post by: JoseSPiano on March 29, 2005, 10:32:07 PM
Good Evening!

Back from my first Mamma Mia! show in Memphis.  And my first night on Keyboard 2.

Whew!

Considering I didn't get a chance to observe the "book" this time, I did rather well.  It was basically a sort of a trial by fire - just jump right in.  But the other guys in the pit are a great group, and made me feel very at ease as always.  The one trouble spot I was worried about turned out to be nothing to worry about.  Of course, there were two "easy" sections that I ended up coming in slightly tentatively, but, all in all, I had a good show.

Tonight, however, was a bit interesting for everyone.  Our bass player has come down with some sort of stomach ailment.  He sat out part of the sound check.  So, when we started tonight's show, we all had some readjusting to do.  The bass player played the show, but cut out early before the final set of bows music.  Tomorrow...  We shall see...

Additionally, The Orpheum Theatre here in Memphis seems to have a reverberant acoustic.  A VERY reverberant acoustic.  And my spot in the pit seems to be right in the middle of the "wave" - I'm sitting basically under the subwoofers.  I can literally FEEL the bass in my body.  Of course, it's a split second "late" due to the reverb... which makes playing with the click and/or the drums a bit interesting.  But now that I know what I'm dealing with, tomorrow night should go a lot smoother.  I'll know what to block out and what to pay attention to.

Onward and upward.

After the show, I joined the conductor and assistant conductor and his partner for a post-show meal at Blues City Cafe.  I had the BBQ's Shrimp - quite tasty.  And a New Castle.  ;)

And something tells me I'll be spending a bit more time on Beale Street later this week.. ;D

Now, I'm back at the hotel, and I'm eating some 1/2-price Easter chocolate I bought at Walgreen's earlier.  A nice night cap.

DR Jane - The two peanut shops are different animals.  The Peanut Shop in Williamsburg is kind of "fancy", and part of the whole Colonial Williamsburg experience.  The Peanut Shoppe here in Memphis is more like a Mom and Pop operation.  It's a very narrow, but long storefront.  The lines for the counter can only be about two people deep if that.  Besides all the various nuts, they also sell the usual assortment of dime-store candy - fruit slices, maple nut goodies, rock candy, etc.

If you ever make it back to Virginia, and you have the time, it's worth the drive out on US Route 460 to check out the Virginia Diner.  Not only do they serve great food, but they also have their own line of peanut and nut products.  Most of the items duplicate the stuff you can find in Williamsburg, but they have a few "exclusives".

And the drive really is scenic.  Peanut and cotton fields on either side of the road.  The cotton plants are particularly beautiful when they are budding.
