DR Danise - It looks to me like it is a wrapper from a Ricola Throat Drop.  Maybe someone gave you one?  Or at least the wrapper before a show?

And the winner is:   DR JOSE!  Yes, it IS a Ricola Throat Drop wrapper!  It was given to me, me, me by our very own BK!

I am unsure how to treat this gift—I’m thinking of having it set in a plastic cube, like the moon rocks I saw at the museum.

Yes, folks, look in envy at me.  Some people just get an autograph.  I have a Ricola Throat Drop Wrapper!

Happy Birthday, DR Ann!

I wanted to say to DR Penny how very much I enjoyed the show and meeting you and all the other DR’s in person.   I am reading the book and plan on showing it and all of my pictures around at work (a four letter word!).

A speedy and safe trip to your parents side, DR Penny.  Spend every precious moment you can with them.

Glad to hear that all is going well for you, DR Jose with the new show.  A bit of trip triva—I knew where the Muse was because of the big Mamma Mia! sign at the end of the street on Broadway.

Good job vibes to DR Jrand!

Gotta run, the bus, the bus!

Re: American Idol

I didn't want to really say anything last night (before it had aired), but I was surprised with the bottom 3.  Yes I knew there was a chance Anwar would be in it.  But to have Anwar AND Nadia was a bit ridiculous (IMO).

I knew that people like Vonzell and Nikko would be safe because of the judges' comments.  And I figured Jessica would be bottom 3.  But I definitely thought Scott or Anthony had a good shot at being at the bottom.

To me Nadia and Anwar are two of the best.  And it was disappointing to see them almost go so early (especially with the good comments Nadia got).

My favorite waltz is one by Mason Williams that deals with a three legged gal - Woody will provide details.

Runner up is:

The Wiener Schnitzel Waltz  by Tom Lehrer

Quote
Do you remember the night I held you so tight,
As we danced to the Wiener Schnitzel Waltz?
The music was gay, and the setting was Viennese,
Your hair wore some roses (or perhaps they were peonies),
...
I remember the night I held you so tight,
As we danced to the Wiener Schnitzel Waltz.
Your lips were like wine (if you'll pardon the simile),
The music was lovely and quite Rudolf Frimly.

Ah, rhymes sublime, in three-quarter time.

Speaking of rhymes, does "paradigm" rhyme with "pidgon"?

Question for DR WFO:  How is Angel Jim and his family doing? When is the next hearing?

Thank you for asking, DR Laura.  As it happens, I am right this very moment witing a letter to the Parole Board.

Since the last postponement of his hearing, Jim was transferred to Attica (Oh, an Al Pacino reference!), which involved, of course, another postponement.  He is however scheduled to appear before the Board next Tuesday the fifth, for which I will be requesting vibes and xylophones.

Not to get into too much detail about his family's tribulations, I would like, however, to indulge in a brief RANT   against MCI®[/b] :

It seems that MCI® has the exclusive contract as long-distance carrier for the New York State Prisons.  Prisoners are allowed to make collect calls, but not to receive calls, and they must call only numbers on their official "call list".  Of course, MCI® charges exorbitant rates for these calls.

But MCI® has no billing agreement with AT&T®, and so Jim's mother has received a bill from MCI®, which she paid.  Nontheless, they put a block on her phone, so it cannot be called from the prison.  Endless calls to MCI® to have it removed resulted in constant frustration and continuous sales pitches to change her LD carrier to MCI® .  Eventually the block was removed.  But after a couple of calls from Jim, it was blocked again.

They told her she can have only six calls a month.  Of course, if she changed her carrier to MCI®, she could have unlimited calls.  Supposedly tomorrow she will be able to receive calls.  Meanwhile, Jim has to relay information through us.  We have yet to receive a bill from MCI® or to be blocked.

Now I suppose our chats will have lots of content-related ads for MCI®.  May I suggest that you all ignore these ads?  I would not recommend MCI®.

One by DR MS - The Blue Danube

One by DR ELMORE - Out Of My Dream

I also like the Embassy Ball Waltz in MY FAIR LADY.

But if I had to choose only one waltz to dance to in a swallow tail coat with a beautiful lady in my arms it would be The Merry Widow Waltz!

You're several years late with that one.  My group Aqabala recorded a pretty wonderful instrumental (if I do say so myself, and I do) called Brother, Can You Spare a Paradigm?  Leslie Pfenninger of A&M Records fame (did she ever find your friend for you) has said it reminds her of Bacharach meets Mendes, which I take as very high praise indeed.

Waltzes:

Lover (Rodgers/Hart):  one of the most sublime sets of sub-V7 sequences ever, long before jazz theorists had even invented sub-V7s.  :)

The Face I Love (Valle):  a nice trip through the "regular" circle of fifths by the Brasilian Valle brothers.  Y'all probably know the Andy Williams version, but Marcos Valle's version(s) are the best.

Tres (Faith):  One of the greatest original instrumentals from Percy's late career (on his most excellent Black Magic Woman album).  He swings, baby.

Merry Widow Waltz!! Waltz of the Flowers!! Third song in the Seven Early Songs of Alban Berg!!! (Das Macht es hat die Nachtigall!!! sublime!!!) Eric Satie: Gymnopedes - ALL of them!!! (even though not orchestral...). Sing to Love from Fledermaus!!! One More Kiss from Follies!!!!!

Lovely day, AGAIN, here... more scrambling and trying to get everything buttoned up ASAP. The news from the homefront: the new guy my family hired has quit, after two days with those lunatics... oy! I feel pressure (only from inside ME, not from THEM) to get back.

Happy Birthday to DR Ann!!!! make a wish!

Loved running into Rodzinski last night at Barrymore's!! He and the wife were on their way to see Strewelpeter, I was heading to All Shook Up... which I loved, and which the more "intelligent" of my friends just hated. The set and choreography and the socko performances made me so glad!!!

Have a good day - off I go to my various and sundried "have-to's". Byeeee

I also like the Embassy Ball Waltz in MY FAIR LADY.

Ditto on that one, DR JRand.

I recall that for a couple of summers the DJ at the Boatslip (in Provincetown) would begin Tea Dance each day with a medley of Strauss waltzes.  Therefore, I have lost my sense of which is which.  But I do like a Strauss waltzes, in general.

Do I hear a...???

And, for another bitter, ironic Sondheim waltz (I had a good chuckle the day I realized that "A Little Priest" was a waltz):  "Could I Leave You?"

Also, and I will defer to the musicologists who frequent the board, but isn't "Shall We Dance?" a polka, not a waltz?  ("It's rather simple, the polka, really.  It's just one, two three, AND.")  I know we all think of it as a waltz because it's so grand, but I believe it's a polka.

As DR Ron Pulliam can tell you, my favorite waltz piece is the "Madame Bovary Waltz" by Miklos Rozsa. I only had it on LP on an MGM soundtrack series from England, and he very kindly burned me a CD with it in both mono and stereo recordings along with other selections. It is among my most prized possessions, and I play it often. In fact, it will probably be in my media check tomorrow because just talking about it has made me want to listen to it again.

I'm afraid Nadia on IDOL is falling into the same category as Tamyra Gray and Latoya London, outstanding vocalists who are not audience friendly. I have to say that I think she's been VERY inconsistent. Some weeks, she has had wonderful performances, but I did not like her songs either last week or this week. Audience good will can only take you so far. Give the audience something they don't care for, and you can dropfrom the top to the bottom quickly (as witnessed Fantasia last year who went from a top three group to a bottom three group in one week's time).

I still think all the people eliminated thus far have deserved it based on their inate ability and performing skills. I have no quibbles with who has gone home (yet).

Anwar is another who has obvious skill but has been sliding downhill for a couple of weeks now. He needs to find a song he can sing with purity and simplicity (much like COnstantine's marvelous rendition this week) and forget about all the flashy and tiresome melisma he's relying on to get him through a number.

Yeah, I wasn't sure about this that's why I asked "does it count?"  But oh, when I think of a waltz I think of "Anna" wearing that beautiful swirling dress dancing in that huge ballroom and wish that I , just once, could wear such a dress and have such a dance.....(sometimes I'm such a girly girl!)  :D

I really believe that the top row (with the exceptions of Nadia and Jessica) were seated in the order of placement in the voting. They certainly corresponded to the busy signals I got when I called their numbers at ten minute intervals.

Nikko was first, COnstantine second, Carrie third, and Bo fourth, and that very clearly parallels the length of busy signals I got when calling their numbers.

As I said Tuesday night, I never got a busy signal at all for Jessica, Anwar, Nadia, Scott, or Vonzell after the first ten minutes.

I don't think they were sitting in any particular order (i would be amazed if after getting voted out if nikko was placing first). But am I the only one who can tell who will be bottom 3 just by looking at how they are sitting?

I saw constantine/nikko/carrie sitting in the first seats and i was like "wow nadia or bo is bottom 3".

Then i could see it was between anwar/anthony and vonzell for the last place in the bottom 3.

It sort of cracks me up that they do someone like scott by himself (for the last place in the bottom group). And he seemingly is on pins and needles. Can't he see that there are 3 people beside him (and it will be one of them to leave). I suppose Idol could do things differently. But they have been doing it the same way all this time!

I echo the sentiment, but the whacko right will be raising bucks on her corpse for years:

 NY TIMES (http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/29/politics/29donate.html?8br):

Quote
List of Schiavo Donors Will Be Sold by Direct-Marketing Firm
By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK and JOHN SCHWARTZ

WASHINGTON, March 28 - The parents of Terri Schiavo have authorized a conservative direct-mailing firm to sell a list of their financial supporters, making it likely that thousands of strangers moved by her plight will receive a steady stream of solicitations from anti-abortion and conservative groups.

"These compassionate pro-lifers donated toward Bob Schindler's legal battle to keep Terri's estranged husband from removing the feeding tube from Terri," says a description of the list on the Web site of the firm, Response Unlimited, which is asking $150 a month for 6,000 names and $500 a month for 4,000 e-mail addresses of people who responded last month to an e-mail plea from Ms. Schiavo's father. "These individuals are passionate about the way they value human life, adamantly oppose euthanasia and are pro-life in every sense of the word!"

Privacy experts said the sale of the list was legal and even predictable, if ghoulish.
...
Executives of Response Unlimited declined to comment. Gary McCullough, director of the Christian Communication Network and a spokesman for Ms. Schiavo's parents, confirmed that Mr. Schindler had agreed to let Response Unlimited rent out the list as part of a deal for the firm to send an e-mail solicitation raising money on the family's behalf.
...

Mr. McCullough said he was present when Mr. Schindler agreed to the arrangement in a conversation with Phil Sheldon, the co-founder of a conservative online marketing organization, RightMarch.com, who acted as a broker for Response Unlimited.
...
Mr. Sheldon - whose father, the Rev. Lou Sheldon, founder of the Traditional Values Coalition, has also sent appeals urging support for Ms. Schiavo - apparently played a dual role as a partner in RightMarch.com, which is working with the anti-abortion activist Randall Terry, and as a broker for Response Unlimited. Mr. Sheldon did not respond to phone calls yesterday.

"I think it sounds a little unusual right now because of the situation where she is in the process of dying," said Richard Viguerie, another major conservative direct-mail operator. "If you came across this information six months or a year from now, I don't think you would give it too much thought."

Lou Sheldon, and Randall Terry, and Richard Viguerie, Oh My!...now these are minions!

Ever notice how overexposure ruins whatever pleasure one might have derived from something?

Princess Cruise Lines has absolutely ruined "Beyond the Sea" as a song for me.  It seems I've heard it every night the past three months on virtually any channel I've watched.

Media simply does not seem to embrace the concept of "keep them wanting more" any more.

Less IS more more often than not.

It's a similar situtation to the Steven Newport posts at rec.arts.theatre.musicals.  Not a subject can arise without three or four or more posts in a row from him on each one.  Many folks won't post there any more.

I think the poor guy has something to say, but I simply can't read ALL that he says.  So he rather shoots off his own foot....just like the media will do with a popular ad.

On a related note (RP mentioned commercials), those Travelocity commercials, with the little ceramic Gnome, absolutely crack me up! I tell you, I laugh so hard at those ones...not since the old Mentos commercials back in the 90s have I looked so forward to seeing an advertisment on TV!

Happy Birthday to New DR SteveO!!

Waltzes that I love that have already been mentioned:

Carousel Waltz
Could I Leave You?
A Little Priest
My Favorite Things
Try to Remember
Wunderbar

Others that I love that have not yet been mentioned...until now:

By Strauss (I have a recording of Maureen McGovern singing it in a live concert and she's fabulous!)
I Never Do Anything Twice (Millicent Martin's version is my favorite)
Meet Me in St. Louis, Ice and Raving Beauty from the OBC of Meet Me in St. Louis (Raving Beauty was also used in (written for?) Best Foot Forward)
Prima Donna (ALW's The Phantom of the Opera)
Storybook (Linda Eder)
There's Always a Woman (cut from Anyone Can Whistle...the best version is with Kaye Ballard and Sally Mayes, recorded by BK!!)
What's the Use? (Candide)

Will anyone else here be taping/watching Live From Lincoln Center's concert version of Sondheim's PASSION?

I feel stupid. I thought that Audra (McDonald) was playing Fosca.  I have been getting really excited thinking about her doing this role.  But she's playing Clara. :(

Will anyone else here be taping/watching Live From Lincoln Center's concert version of Sondheim's PASSION?

It's showing tomorrow night on the Seattle PBS station.  I'm ushering for a local play so I'll have to tape it...which I would've anyway.  I can't wait!  I remember when the London production of Passion was announced and there was all the speculation of who was going to play Fosca.  Patti LuPone's name was the one that I heard the most, but Maria Friedman ended up playing the role.  I love Maria Friedman but I love Patti more!

"Lost" -- last night's story was mesmerizing, especially Locke's back story about meeting his mother and father.  Sometimes, the survivors' dreams seem more real than their reality.  And, of course, on "Lost", the reality is based on the fantastic.

After last night, I'm totally and wonderfully confused and amazed and wanting more, more, more....  (David Lynch, eat your heart out!)

I watched last night's Alias, which was a bit better than the last few episodes.  But the fact that after the near-death that Sydney almost suffers, it was laugh-inducing that they'd just pick up an hour later and continue the mission.

elmore, I too am not a fan of Cole Porter's TRUE LOVE.  In fact, it is right up there as one of my least favourite songs...along with ALLEY CAT, PEPE, IT'S A SMALL WORLD, ALWAYS, YESTERDAY, and THE ANNIVERSARY WALTZ.

I must say, having bowed out early on AMERICAM IDOL this season, I haven't missed it at all...and I'm finding as I get older, there is really nothing that qualifies as "must-see" TV.  The only two shows I watch regularly are new South Parks when they air and Deadwood.  And If I miss an episode of either of these, it ain't a tragedy either.

These days I'd just rather read a book.

ALIAS QUESTION.

They cut off the end here.  Can anyone tell me what happened after Syd dropped Marshall off at his house.  He asked her to come for dinner.  She said no, that she had to meet someone at the train. AND THEN THEY CUT IT OFF.

I can see the end this weekend.  But they switched the programming here right at 10pm. :(

Ah okay. But why the train station?

I'm sort of afraid I will get screwed out of the ending every week now.  In Canada Alias is only on ABC on wednesdays.  But if a show is also simultaneously on a Canadian station, then we automatically get the Canadian feed. Well since EYES is on ABC AND a Canadian station at 10pm, I think it's always gonna switch right at 10pm (there used to be WIFESWAP which was not on a Canadian station).  This is not good. :(

Favorite waltzes:

Well, the "Madam Bovary" waltz is surely a favorite, but there are others from movies I love:

Boys from Brazil (Jerry Goldsmith) -- the main title is a devastatingly beautiful and vigorours waltz.

Murder on the Orient Express (Richard Rodney Bennett) -- simply wonderful music which led the late, highly opinionated composer Bernard Herrmann to complain that, in essence, the film was about a death train and that a waltz was inappropriate.

Anastasia (Alfred Newman) -- the main title is wondrous, as are a couple of other waltz pieces Newman wrote.  It's a gorgeous score.

Desiree (Alfred Newman) -- actually, Newman wrote only the main title, which was repeated a few other times in the film.  But it's a magnificent creation that seems to pit the strings against the brass.  It ends much, much too soon in the film's opening.

Stavisky -- Sondheim wrote several waltz-like themes for this movie and they're wonderful.

Good Morning!  Good Afternoon!

I finally put my feet on the floor around 10:00 this morning.  I got myself spiffed up a bit, then headed across the street to Memphis Grits for breakfast.

This morning's culinary feast was their Breakfast Platter.  Two eggs (scrambled), sausage (patties), Memphis Grits (stone ground, cheddar cheese(!)), cinnamon apples, and a biscuit (with butter and honey).  Very good and filling.  And the coffee was very good too.

By the time I was done breakfasting, it was time to head over to the Peabody Hotel to catch the 11:00 March of the Ducks.  I got there around 10:50, and there was already a pretty good crowd in the lobbby - which is actually smaller than one would think (well, at least smaller than I thought).  All the prime viewing spots were taken, but I did manage to secure a piece of floor close to the fountain.

An announcement came on that gave a brief history of the Ducks.  The whole thing started, more or less, as a joke of some hunters who though it would be a "good" idea to keep their live decoys (which were legal back then) in the marble fountain of the Peabody.  Well, the "idea" stuck.  Nowadays, a breeder breeds the ducks, Mallards, and they are allowed to mature at the Peabody.  Once their stay at the Peabody has ended, they are returned to the breeder who then releases them back into the wild.  In any case...

After the announcement, we are all directed to look towards the elevators.  Music starts - a lively March, of course.  The elevator doors open, and out come the ducks.  -The ducks live in a "Penthouse" on the roof of the hotel when they are not in the fountain.

Lots of Oohhs and Aaahhs.  Cameras flashing.  Children giggling.  Some clapping.

The Ducks march down the Red Carpet that is set up for them.  Once they are all in the fountain - I believe there are five of them right now - the "Keeper" puts up the small barrier that keeps the Ducks in the fountain.  More pictures.

At 5:00, the whole process is repeated in reverse as the Ducks make their way back up to their "Penthouse".  I may try to get there at 4:30 in order to secure a better viewing spot, and take some more pictures.

:)

As for 3/4 Time Pieces:

Debussy - "La plus que lente" (the "slower than slow" waltz).  Yes, it does lean towards the salon side of Debussy's output, but it's a lovely piece, and I actually like it better when I hear it played a bit more "sentimentally" than some purists would prefer.  I first heard Andre Watts play this on a Live From Lincoln Center recital.  And I played it on my first full recital in college.

Chopin - The Waltzes, The Mazurkas.

"Hello, Young Lovers" from The King & I.  Pianist, Stephen Hough, has a lovely transcription of this song.

"The Carousel Waltz" from Carousel - Such an amazing "prologue". -And Stephen Hough also performs a transcription of this one - amazingly virtuosic without sacrificing flash for substance.

"When I'm Not Near The Girl I Love" from Finian's Rainbow.

"Come To Me, Bend To Me" from Brigadoon.

"Lay Down Your Head" from Violet.

"Where's My Shoe?" from She Loves Me - albeit a very fast "waltz".  ;)

"Before I Gaze At You Again" from Camelot

Fauré - "Aprčs un ręve" - Both in the original vocal version, and the instrumental transcriptions.

Mozart - "Deh vieni non tardar" - Yes, technically it's in 6/8, but it's still very lilting.

Ned Rorem - "Early in the morning" - This has to be one of my all-time favorite American art songs.  The poem and music perfectly convey the memory of having breakfast in a Parisian café - with a touch of bittersweetness.  I think the term "painfully beautiful" applies to this two-page masterpiece.

Early In The Morning
Ned Rorem
Text: Robert Hillyer

Early in the morning
Of a lovely summer day,
As they lowered the bright awning
At the outdoor cafe,
I was breakfasting on croissants
And café au lait
Under greenery like scenery,
Rue François Premier.

They were hosing the hot pavement
With a dash of flashing spray
And a smell of summer showers
When the dust is drenched away
Under greenery like scenery,
Rue François Premier,
I was twenty and a lover
And in Paradise to stay,
Very early in the morning
Of a lovely summer day.

As for "Human Again" - I'm still "recovering" from this piece.  ;)

Back in the days when I would be called in to help with the auditions for Disney's Beauty & The Beast, "Human Again" was the one piece we would use to "test" the potential Chips.  -That and the whole "Momma, momma" scenelet.

"So... Now you have to pretend that your microphone has gone out, and that your parents and best friends are sitting in the back row of the theatre.  You want to make sure they hear you, so...."

I can't wait to be human again...[/size]

I don't think you know it, (DR Elmore can vouch for us) but we have quite a collection of bears in the apartment. There are some other animals also, a very large Panda (named Ling Park), a couple of dogs, a rabbit, a lamb (both are puppets) and a 22 year collection of Gundy, an annual Christmas release bear from Gund. So our new little friend will be right at home among his many relatives.

I'm not sure he could sing the score, but God knows what the screenplay will do to the music (I've read the screenplay for MOST HAPPY FELLA).  However, if I were a producer, I'd beg Russell Crowe to do Arthur in CAMELOT!  I can't think of anyone I feel is more right.  I like the idea of Emma Thopson as Mrs Lovett.

The only thing is if anyone actually bothered to ask Mr. Crowe he would have to say he hasn't been offered the role - no one has.  It's all the same silly stuff that went on during Phantom - you remember Antonio Banderas.  You remember John Travolta.  They were all deciding whether to play the phantom and yet none of them had been offered the role.  Funny that.  It's all a publicist's game.

PARADIGM!

For those who may not know, Your Zowie Face is from one of the Our Man Flint films, and it's by Jerry Goldsmith.

At Wall to Wall Sondheim, Mr Sondheim discussed the Sweeney Todd film. He said that the role of Sweeney is now in the hands of an actor that they all hope will do it.
He also mentioned that John Logan, who is working on the screenplay, and Sam Mendes, who will direct, have very specific ideas on how they want Sweeney to be played.

Russell Crowe's rock band, Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts, just announced that they were breaking up.

Coincidence? I think not.

Having attended  the Sondheim 75th birthday gala, I'm thinking that Anne Hathaway would be a strong contender for the role of Johanna in the film.

And, having seen The Light in the Piazza, I wouldn't mind Matt Morrison in the role of Anthony.

Here's my hilarious One of A Kind from Applause story (which probably loses a little in the translation to the printed page):

I had written and was music directing a cabaret starring Susannah Mars (whom some of you know and love) and Todd Hermanson (whom none of you probably know, but would love anyway).  So I got us booked on the live morning show here in Portland to promote the thing.  Well it turns out Miss Professionalism Susannah had never done a live tv spot before and was scared out of her friggin' mind.  She kept moaning to Todd (who is this ultra-suave, ultra-smooth tall Nordic blond leading man type), "What if I go up?  What if I blow it."  And Todd, all ultra-suave and ultra-smooth, kept reassuring her that all would be fine (you may sense the *first* punchline coming already).

So's anyway our segment begins and I introduce the stars and say that we will be singing One of a Kind from Applause.  And Susannah does her verse perfectly.  It's Todd's turn.

Todd has absolutely NO clue what to sing, where he is, why the bright lights are shining, etc.  Now the really funny thing is (and we have this on tape), the floor director kept the camera on Susannah.  So as Todd is fumbling, literally humming along and saying lounge lizard things like "You, baby, you're one of a kind, y'know it, babe?", the camera is fixated on Susannah, who has this petrified Miss America smile while the terror is clearly creeping into her eyes.

I meanwhile am plugging along, thinking, should I just cadence and get them out of it?  When all of a sudden, Todd regains his faculties and starts singing for the last bar and a half (no joke).  So we end, and cut to commercial.

Susannah immediately loses it.  You have never heard such laughing in your life.  She is literally unable to breathe she is laughing so hard.

By the time we get to the lobby, she has huge raccoon eyes from her melting mascara and she has begun to hyperventilate (I swear I am not making this up).  So she gets down on her hands and knees and is gasping for air in the lobby of Channel 12.

READY FOR THE ULTIMATE PUNCHLINE???

At this point, who should walk in to the lobby, but the very distinguished (at that time) elder Senator from Oregon, Mark Hatfield.  Here is quite possibly the most notable politician in Oregon's history (save for maybe Tom McCall) and Susannah is on the floor with raccoon eyes and gasping breaths.

Senator Hatfield took one look at us and literally clung to the wall as he walked the perimeter of the room to avoid coming too close.  He then began urgently pressing the security button to get someone to let him into the studios.

This is one of my favorite all time stories and one we torment Todd with with great regularity.

Jennifer, I think you're contradicting your own argument if you're wondering how Nikko could rise from being voted out to the top of the ladder.

Aren't YOU the one who says the judges' opinions influence viewer voting the most, and NO ONE got more raves on Tuesday than Nikko.

And American LOVE a comeback story more than just about anything.

Now, understand when I say that I am not a fan of Nikko's boy band technique or voice. I'm just commenting on my observations, and I DID make the phone calls that resulted in busy signals for an hour on Nikko's line. What additional proof do you need?

No, a vote is registered if the phone answers. You don't have to listen to the taped message every time. No vote registers on a busy signal. I don't mind giving a stray vote here and there to find out how the voting is going.

In the second hour, I vote only for my favorites. This week it was Constantine and Anthony that got my votes.

DR MattH, re: Nikko.  Even though I think the judges influence/manipulate the voters, I would be amazed if someone who was voted out could place first.

I for one, would not be happy to have someone who was voted out win AI (not that I think he will).

I am curious though how many votes separate first from last.  If it's only a few thousand, then it would seem anybody could go any given week.  I've always wondered how many more votes the first place person gets.  And I wonder if an obvious trend appears (say if carrie places first every single week by a huge margin).

Ah okay. But why the train station?
One of the stations of the Red Line in Los Angeles is supposedly where the current APO has their headquarters.

The Red Line also has a station at Union Station, in fact it is the downtown end of the line.

So it was only logical for Sydney to meet Vaughn at Union Station.  (And it's far more romantic than any of the Red Line stations.)

What can I tell you, Jennifer? I have the busy signals on the East Coast to prove that Nikko was the most popular from Tuesday night. His was the ONLY line that stayed busy for the first hour of voting. Every other person I called had no busy signals past the first HALF HOUR.

We saw Fantasia go from most popular to second from the lowest vote getter last year in one week's time. No reason to think it can't work the other way, too.

But you can argue with a fence post if you want to.

My favorite waltz is one by Mason Williams that deals with a three legged gal - Woody will provide details.
Details, details, details...

The song in question is "The Last Great Waltz," found on Mason's CD Music 1968 - 1971.  It tells the tale of Jonathan W. Astor, who loves to dance, and loves to waltz most of all.  Unfortunately, when he attends a ball none of the ladies will dance with him because he's too much of a perfectionist.  Ah, but then he meets the Triskellion, who has the same problem because she has three legs...

It's a funny song, warmly funny so it stays funny every time we listen to it.  Part of the humor is in the music itself.  It starts in 4/4, for the narration, slips into 3/4 for Jonathan's solo, back to 4/4 for more narration, then to 3/4 for the Triskellion's solo (sung by Jennifer Warnes, I believe), back again to 4/4 for more narration, and finally, as Jonathan and the Triskellion happily dance together, goes into 5/4 time!  Absolutely perfect!

The last time we were in L.A. (in fact, the time BK and I met at Jerry's), we took the train from Portland.  Unfortunately there was Metroliner crash on the way south and we had to disembark at some town about 50 miles or so north of L.A.  But coming back we got to leave from Union Station.  What a grand old station it is.  We stayed at some really scary hotel across the street from the parking lot so that we wouldn't have to battle traffic that morning.

I'm back from a wonderful luncheon with Miss Tammy Minoff and friend.  They've been working on a treatment for a TV movie idea, which I've been helping them with for the past month.  It's very good now - they just have to do a few more little smoothing.

I took a tiny respite from my reasonable eating to have a small Caesar and some pasta.  I've been disappointed with CPK the last few times I've been there, but I must say the food was actually superb today.  And now I am quite logey.

Enter the pedant, DRSWW!  Technically, "Agony" is 6/8 and a barcarolle, and while aa lot of "Eine Klene Nachtmusik" is in 3/4, it isn't all waltzes, only sundry forms of triple time:
"In Praise of Women" is a polonaise
"Liaisons" may be a sarabande
"Every Day A Little Death" and "A Weekend in the Country" are 6/8, possibly in the barcarolle family (or jig?).  Although Jonathan Tunick threw in the horns on the Rosenkavalier Waltz reference at the end, the number isn't technically a waltz.
The Miller's Son" begins as a slow waltz but jumps into duple time in the fast sections.

And Mr. Mancini's Charade is a great waltz.

Well, dear readers, you won't believe it - I can barely believe it myself and yet I must for it is true.  I was sitting on my couch like so much fish, feeling very logey.  I started to watch the movie I was in the midst of, but I was just feeling too darn full to watch.  So, I thought, perhaps a nice long walk will do me some good.  I decided to go to my local DVD store, even though I'd been there yesterday and they hadn't had anything new.  So, I took a nice walk (the weather is stunning here).  I've been asking them to hold certain titles for me - sometimes they do, sometimes they forget.  I walk in the store, and I'm whistling I'm Past My Prime since I have to rehearse it tomorrow with Miss Jessica Rush.  The nice lady who runs the store, Vivian, says, "No singing allowed."  I say, "It's Li'l Abner and I'm singing it until you get the DVD."  At which point her husband says, "Li'l Abner?  That came in last night."  Vivian says she didn't know and therefore hadn't held it.  He walked over to the case and lo and behold it was still there.  O joy!  O rapture!  Li'l Abner is mine and I shall be watching it this very evening.  They also had Teacher's Pet, so I got that, too.  O joy!  O rapture!  I shall have the full Li'l Abner report for you in tomorrow's notes.

Hello everyone!  I have caught up at last.  I was enjoying all the various and sundried birthday wishes from all you wonderful folk.  Thank you all so very much.  So far my birthday has been rather uneventful.  A normal day at work, a rather motion sickness-inducing ride home...that's about it.  However, as we speak, DR Jed is behind me in the kitchen baking what looks to be a spectactularly delicious chocolate cake.  I believe I will celebrate my birthday by blowing the diet and eating copious amounts of cake.

Oh yes, I believe I forgot to mention that I'm now working the same temporary test-scoring job as DR Jed.  Temporary, but good money :)

C'mon now Kerry, Goulet is well out of those guys' league. Okay, it is a little hard to imagine him having a son in his young 20s as the character does. But he should sing the part well. It just might work.

What a day!

First day back to work.  I took the pictures I have so far with me along with Penny’s book for “show and tell”.  I had many fine comments on them but the one that took the cake was the picture of Ben and myself—just about EVERYONE thought we were (at the very least) cousins. They kept saying, “I didn’t know you had relatives in NY, I thought you were going to see some friends.”

The other hit was the picture of mini-bar.  What can I say?  I had tons of, “So which ones did you drink?” questions.  Like I would.  Geez.   ::)

I also proudly displayed my BK gift.  You know, after looking at it in different lights and at different angles, I could almost swear it looks like a major religious icon.  Which One, has yet to be determined, (Note to self, I need to check which is the hottest selling) but I feel that it IS possible…..

Not that I would part with such a treasure for ANY amount (Thought to self: Well, you do need to put up a privacy fence and you did want that note book computer….ah, hem)!

Soooo I just want to make it clear to anyone who happens to be cruising E-bay, if you happen to see a wrapper up for bid, no matter what religious icon it looks like, it is NOT mine!  ;) :D ;)

I was also told (once again) that it was very quiet the whole time I was away.  Funny, it’s never very quiet when I’m there.  I just don’t understand.

The Hersery Kisses I brought every one were a hit as well.  I told them it was “A kiss from NY”.  I wish I could have had each of them personalized but I just couldn’t afford to do that.

When I came home, I had a package from DR George waiting for me!  Such excitement!  I can not thank you enough for the CD’s!   I love them all but confess to being especially fond of two of them.   ;) Can’t WAIT to listen to them.

DR’s Elmore and Ben, I’m glad you liked the little “Thank you” gifts I sent.  I really appreciated your taking your time to show me around the city.  It meant more to me then you will ever know.

This trip was so very different from the first one and it was all due to the wonderful people I met.   I only wish I could have met more of you from the board.  I hope someday I shall.

Despite what you think, I am usually very shy around people I don’t know—at least until you get to know me, then WATCH OUT. We were talking about that at work today.  My boss said she remembers when I first started, I barely said a word to any one.  Now, she doesn’t know what is going to come out of my mouth!

I wondered how I would react when I met you all in person.  Funny, but I didn’t feel shy or backwards at all.  It was all so comfortable from the first moment we said, “Hi, I’m…….”.

I’m rattling on.  Sorry but it was such a nice day and despite my bellyaching about going back to work, I was very glad to see everyone again.   :)

I also enjoyed last nights story.  I love LOST.  It's just about the only program I make sure I am in front of the TV to watch.

:)

I wanna see duck pictures!     :)

I think there is a subway in LA. Never been on it, but saw it in the film Speed and Volcanoe where a guy melts as he steps down from a train and into the lava.

Right you are- thanx for saving me the research! (Also in Lethal Weaon 3.)
(Woody and I were discussiong same over cocktails)

The Red Line (LA 's only pure Subway) is quite a wonderful example of civic infrastructure. A considrerable part of the budget was set aside for "ART" - each of the stations had separately commissioned designs for the track levels as well as the concourses and street access. It's worth a ride to get off at each station and enjoy the designs. (Unlike Washington, DC's Metro which looks line a mine tunnel from Communist Russia!).

I say "pure" subway because both the Blue and Gold lines are a combination subway-light rail system. As a monument to beaurcratic idiocy, the Blue/Gold lines share the same tunnel system as the Red Line. but because of car-selection, use different track sizes >:(

I had a good night shopping for music. I had to go buy a Gwen Stefani CD for the Gal because I lost our annual Oscar Prediction Battle. SO, I eased the pain of that by buying a nice Roger Miller collection for myself. He's one of those artists who is hard to find all the hits in one place, but I found a decent set that sounds pretty good. The guy doesn't have many songs longer than 2 minutes.
I also found a good 50s compilation LP with some rare hits on it, and for 99 cents I found an odd 45 by Michelle Lee called "L. David Sloane". Who knew?
Finally an eclectic 8-CD box set of 70s music hits from England. The collection is from England, that is, but it has US and British artists, a real eclectic mix of stuff. They don't separate soul from disco from new wave from MOR. I love it!

Ten O'clock, yikes!  Past my bedtime.  I feel like I never keep up with the posts I want to comment on or start comments I want to make.

I hope your headache is better, DR Elmore.

I feel both sad and relived about Terry Schiavo.  I’m sad about her death but relived that her suffering is at long last over.  I understand about the right to die and I’m sure most of us do not want to be tied up to machine to keep us alive.  But I have to wonder, how many of us want to be starved to death?   Starving her was a horrible thing to do.

I find I can't agree that it was right in any way, shape or form.  We show more compassion to an animal that is suffering.  We don't starve them, we give them a shot.

At least she finely is a peace.  I only hope that some good can come from this and people will make their wishes known before hand.

If I want a shot instead of being starved, I think that wish should be respected.  If Terry said she didn't want to be kept alive by other means, I'm almost certain the thought wasn't expanded to think what that would mean, i.e. starvation.

All of the choices should be explored--a causal, "Oh, I don't want to kept alive that way" isn't enough.

I think that perhaps at some point in a persons life, they should sit down and really give it some thought then get those wishes down on paper and witnessed.  I know it's hard to think of ones death but it has to be dealt with.

No different then going ahead and buying your gravesite, etc.  It's not gross, it's just practical.

The Roman Catholic church no longer reserves "last rites" for the terminal ill. The sacrament is used more liberally - before surgury, etc.

Agreed - but that is Dr. assisted suicide and is presently illegal in 49 states and is being litigated in Oregon. The "Capital R" Religious community does not want us peons controlling our own destiny - if their God wants us to suffer, then suffer we must.

'Last Rites' Not Always Sign of Death

Thursday, March 31, 2005

A look at the anointing of the sick, one of Roman Catholicism's seven sacraments:

The anointing of the sick is often misunderstood as signaling that a patient is about to die. That's because of its popular nickname — "last rites."

The ritual is performed to confer divine strength, peace, courage and forgiveness of sins, not only on a Catholic near death but also to a parishioner facing a grave illness or a serious operation. A Catholic can receive the sacrament more than once.

During the sacrament, the priest lays hands on the patient and prays "may the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up." He then anoints the forehead and hands with blessed oil.

The anointing may be preceded by the sacrament of reconciliation — commonly called "penance" — but the anointing of the sick alone offers forgiveness of sins if the patient isn't able to undergo a full confession. It may be followed by the sacrament of the Eucharist or Holy Communion

Evening greetings, all!  Just came from a wonderful meeting of my book group where we discussed The Kite Runner.  We were supposed to meet at my home and eat kite-shaped shortbread cookies, but I decided earlier in the week that a) nobody would want to be in our germ-infested home, and b) they really didn't want to eat cookies that I'd had my hands in!  One of our other members stepped in to host, but I took the cookie cutter and told them that I'd make the cookies at a later date!  I'm feeling better (still coughing, though), but DH Richard is not  :-\

Doctor assisted suicide is most definitely not being litigated in Oregon.  We have voted for it twice.  What is being attempted (first by Herr Ashcroft, who failed miserably and was rebuffed rather vigorously by the 9th Circuit, and now by Congress, though they're encountering difficulty, too) is to have doctors' licenses revoked under some FDA rule for prescribing the drugs that lead to death.  In fact, Senator Wyden specifically fought for and won an amendment to the opportunistic Schiavo bill the Senate passed making it clear it set no precedent for Oregon's Death With Dignity act.

Another great waltz was written for the Comos Ball Scene in JEZEBEL. I'm assuming this was by Max Steiner.

BK, does Li'l Abner have any extras?

I also took a walk on this lovely day...about four miles up into the Hills of Los Feliz...great vistas from downtown to the ocean.

I also noticed that they have refurbished the infamous Ackermanse where Forry Ackerman until about a year or so ago lived and where Jon Hall lived before him.  I must say they have done a terrific job on it.

It had gotten a tad dilapidated during Forry's final years of occupancy.  It looked there had not been a new piece of furniture or carpeting in it since the 1970's.  It is a lovely mediterrean home that has been lovingly spruced up.

Oh, one of the disappointments from the Warner chat the other night was leaning that they are not working on THE OPPOSITE SEX for DVD release.

Looks like I'll have to record it from TCM the next time it plays, and then compare it to the laserdisc to see if there's any substantial difference between the two before burning my own copy.

vixmom: My local DVD store frequently gets early copies of DVDs - sometimes as much as a couple of months in advance.

I won't say the transfer is perfection, but for the most part it's pretty splendid, especially after all these years of having to endure the yellowy out of focus full frame atrocity that is the VHS tape.  The tranfers only problems are several shots that are on the soft side because they're out of registration.  But most of it is really sharp and the color is pretty eye-opening.  I'm halfway through.  Leslie Parrish is making my heart ache she's so beautiful.  And, she's FUNNY.  There are many great laugh-out-loud lines - one of my favorites:  Marryin' Sam:  My income depends on the outcome.

You'd BETTER fire that chauffer.

Oh, and Li'l Abner has no extras, not even a trailer, but then again it can be had for under ten bucks and it's the movie that counts.

The sound is mono, which it should be - the only way it ever played.

I shall now make my confession to you.  I have never seen this movie....although I was a great fan of the strip when I was a youngster and it ran in our Color Sunday Funnies Supplement

I do, however, have all intentions of obtaining a copy and watching it as soon as it becomes available in my neck of the woods.....

Doctor assisted suicide is most definitely not being litigated in Oregon.  We have voted for it twice.

What - you think the voters of the soverign state of Oregon have a right to a point of view! How quaint!

Maybe I should have said that the issue is being "litigated at" the good people of the state of Oregon.

With G_d's help you will prevail.

N. Korea Demands U.S. Apology
Thursday, March 31, 2005

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea  is waiting for the United States to apologize for calling it an "outpost of tyranny" before the communist state will return to nuclear talks, a senior official said, as the North announced Friday it will convene a rubber-stamp parliament expected to endorse its boycott of the talks.

And apologize we should. North Korea is not an "outpost of tyranny" - it is the Eastern capital of tyranny and a hub of barbarism!

After stopping in at the theatre, I went ahead and headed over to the Civil Rights Museum.  It was a just few blocks from the Orpheum further down Main Street.  When I first came upon it, I wasn't sure I had found the right place - this my first time there - but after following the signs, entering the building and paying my admission...

The Museum was built on/in/around the Lorraine Hotel, the site of where Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated.  It consists of two buildings.  The first building is on the grounds of the Lorraine Hotel, and the second building is on the grounds of the boarding house across the street from where James Earl Ray fired his gun.

A true, palpable sense of history was/in the air.

I didn't spend too much time reading and looking at everything.  I was already getting a bit overwhelmed just looking at the preliminary exhibit.  Disturbing pictures.  Shameful pictures.  Hopeful pictures.  Inspiring pictures.

There really is a lot in those two buildings including a reconstruction of the hotel room where MLK was staying that fateful night.  There are two running films, some interactive kiosks, and many recreations of significant moments - Rosa Parks' bus, a lunch counter, etc. - as well as some "memorabilia" - an actual KKK "uniform", a train porter's uniform, a transcript of MLK's phone call to his wife...  I really found myself holding back tears every now and then...  Just so much there...  And realizing that most of the "history" is still relatively "recent history".

I really can't describe it all.  Instead, I'll post the website for the museum should you wish to explore.

"It's not fair to point out our business, and personally, I don't find them offensive," Ginger Streeval, a co-owner of White River Truck Repair and Yard Art, told the Daily Journal of Franklin for a story Wednesday.

Frank Butler, the county's zoning inspector, disagreed.

When I left the Museum, I noticed a makeshift "display" set up right outside of the museum grounds.  Upon closer examination, it turned out to be a woman, Jacqueline Smith, who as of today, had been set up there in protest of the museum for 1757 days so far.  She - and others - are protesting the fact that so much public money was spent on the museum and it's exhibits, while local concerns - education, health, welfare - were/are being "ignored".  And calling the Museum a money-making "tourist trap", exploiting the memory and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.

As I passed her table, all I could think of was how lucky we are to live in a country where we can protest the "good".  Nothing but respect for her and her cause.

I bet you're asking, "Hey, Jose... No food report today?"  Well...

On the walk back to the hotel, I stopped into "Gus's World Fried Chicken".  I had passed it on the way to the Civil Rights Museum, and made a mental note to stop there.  Soon.  ;)  So...

When I sat down at the table, I noticed the menu was headed with "Gus's World Famous Hot & Spicy Fried Chicken".  Hmm, "World Famous Hot & Spicy" - even better!

My very friendly and funny waitress came over and informed me that they feature "Chicken, Chicken and Chicken".  :)  So, I ordered Chicken.  A breast and thigh plate - with baked beans, cole slaw and white bread.  I also ordered a small side of seasoned fries and sweet tea.

After the tea was brought to my table - in two plastic cups (she was thinking ahead in regards to refills) - I realized the chicken was being cooked to order.  The wait was well worth it.  Well Worth It.

The chicken arrived on a styrofoam plate with a plastic fork and a pile of napkins.  The chicken was a deep nut brown.  When I first touched it, it was still fresh-out-of-the-fryer hot, and the crust/coating seemed very crisp.  It was the type of fried chicken that is basically seasoned and dredged in a coating of flour - no batter, no "extra crunchy" coating.

When I took the first bite... "crunch"... followed by some steam... then some juicy goodness running down my chin... then some heat from the red pepper in the coating and marinade... and the moist chicken.  This was definitely "Slap yo' mamma good" fried chicken!

The cole slaw was OK.  The baked beans tasted like canned baked beans that had been doctored up with peppers and spices.  The fries were good.  But it was all about the Fried Chicken.  I found myself slowing down to eat just to make sure I was tasting all of it.  The "hot and spicy" provided just the right level of heat and seasoning.  I was even tempted to order another wing or two... But once all I had on my plate were the picked over bones...  Dessert!!

And, boy, did I splurge.  The waiter had informed everyone in the dining room that a coconut pie had just come out of the oven.  I like coconut pie, but I really wasn't in the mood for coconut pie.  When my waitress came back to my table, I asked her what I should have, what her favorite was.  She highly suggested the Chess Pie. "Lemon Chess?"  "No, Vanilla Chess".   Hmm... I've never had Vanilla Chess Pie, so...

What came to my table was a big wedge of Vanilla Chess Pie.  1/6 of a pie, as opposed to the usual 1/8 (or smaller).  Dense, rich, sweet, vanilla-y... and a pretty good crust too!  It was basically a mass of egg yolks, butter, sugar and vanilla.  Soooo good.  And definitely something that I should only have once a week, if not just once a month.

I left Gus's Fried Chicken with a very full stomach, and a big smile on my face.

;D

Tonight's show was good.  However, I started feeling a little "out of it" about halfway into the first act.  The fried chicken?  All the walking today?  Allergies?  Whatever...

But it was a good show.  There's still one spot that "scares" me, but I should be over that fear by the time DRs JRand, Ginny and Joey hear "me" in Indianapolis next week.

DR Matthew - As others have already pointed out, there is most definitely a subway system in Los Angeles.  I should know.  I spent a lot of time on it when I was there last summer working on What If?.  I got to know L.A.'s public transportation system rather well while I was out there since I had no car when I was there.  I liked it.

The Art in the subway is pretty nice and varied.  They offer a tour of the Art each month - I believe on the first Saturday.  I was not able to take advantage of it, but it apparently lasts a few hours, and you get a nice tour of the Metro system - and it's free too.
