Title: TIME WARP
Post by: bk on April 02, 2005, 11:57:52 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know what time it is, and now that you know what time it is it is time for you to post until the cows come home, which will be as soon as they figure out what time it IS.

And the word of the day is: POPPYCOCK!

The other word of the day is: WUSSBURGER.  It's Saturday night - we should be havin' a wienie roast or something, but NOOOOOO, we've got to have a bunch of lazy loafer WUSSBURGERS.

Good morning, all!  Dear Friend BK, I have to agree with you:  Daylight saving time reminds me of the Rodgers & Hart "Morning is Midnight."  I'm walking around thinking "9:20? No, it's really 8:20." Since there was no 2 a.m. for us East Coasters, which was your 11 pm, how could you ever post new notes at midnight?  Did you even have a midnight?  Time is out of joint.

So, I woke up this morning to a lovely email from DR TCB, which gave me the suspicion something had occurred last night after I signed off.  Wow! Did it ever!  I've just looked over Michael Shayne's current project.  While I cannot give him a tribute page, since I'm a computer moron, I can certainly build him a shrine!   I'm quite boggled by a number of things about these pages; how did he ever learn all that? Where did he find those photos of BABES IN TOYLAND and GREENWILLOW?

This leads to a confession:  a few years ago, one of my friends called me from Florida to tell me he and his wife just attended a pops concert and loved my CHORUS LINE medley.  I was floored since even in my advancing senility I could never recall arranging such a medley.   There are two Larry Moores in the arranging field, I've discovered.  I don't know the other L Moore or where he lives.  I'm sure he occasionally gets a credit for something I've done and thinks, Did I do that?  From my limited sleuthing, I think he's in educational music, possibly on staff with Hal Leonard publishing.  There are at least two credits in DRMichaelShayne's pages that are his, and I'll get those fixes to Michael ASAP.

So, today's projects include some tidying, some work on Anna Bergman's upcoming shows, perhaps a visit with DR Rodzinski, and of course a bit of BABES IN TOYLAND work.  First, some more coffee!

Fortunately, I’m safe from the time warp, in Tokyo.  :)
I vaguely feel happy  that the time warp made us, me and DRs who live in areas having the Daylight Saving Time, one hour closer.
I learned much about the Daylight Saving Time from some yesterdays’ posts, on this board which is always educational/useful for me.

My special favorites are The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Little Match Girl. I wonder what is/are your DRs favorite/favorites...

Saudis Behead Three Convicted TerroristsSunday, April 03, 2005

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia  — Saudi authorities on Friday executed three Saudi militants convicted of assassinating several officials two years ago, Saudi authorities said as this Gulf state continued its campaign to stamp out terrorism.

The three men were beheaded in public in the northern Saudi city of al-Jawf where they carried out their crimes, the Interior Ministry said. After the executions, authorities displayed the executed militants in a public square outside a mosque, tying their bodies to poles on top of which were placed their heads.

Prompt, public, horrifying. humiliating.

I have KING OF KINGS next in the line-up of films to watch. I still have NUMBERS from Friday night recorded, too, and I also recorded O. HENRY'S FULL HOUSE last night off the Fox Movie Channel to transfer to a DVD-R.

Doesn't look like Fox has any interest in producing a commercial DVD of this entertaining film with an amazing all-star cast.

Just got back from taking the dogs for their weekend walk.  Funny how I have two very excited dogs jumping at the chance to go when we leave the house and two very tired dogs, dragging their butts in the front door when we come home.    At what point  that change occurs during our walk, I know not.   ;) :D

DR Elmoore, did you see my question last night?

Nice day today.  The wind is cool which makes it a little nippy in the shade but very nice in the sun.  A long sleeve day to be sure.

I'm thinking about buying a lemon tree.  I'd rather have a lemon bush but if I keep cutting the tree back, it would be the same thing.  I was thinking that since it's doctors order that I eat a lemon every day, it would be nice to go out and pick a fresh one.

I bought a new comptuer game yesterday called WordJong To Go.  It's like Mahjone (which I adore) only you have to take the tiles off of the stack by making words.  Which can get to be a bit tricky when you get to the bottom of the pile.  It's quite fun.

I realize that this is not Ask BK Day.  However, since it is Free-For-All Day here at HHW, I guess I can make part of my free-for-all be a question to BK.  Why is it (an Andy Rooney reference) that you never go out to dine with Guy Haines?  Last night, you were craving a salad with ranch dressing and croutons.  Why didn't Mr. Haines offer to accompany you to Marie Callander's?  Obviously, he must be in town, if you are going to start recording in the next week or so.  Would it have really bothered him that much to take an hour or two out of his evening to go out with his producer for a salad?

Peter, Paul & Mary liked the Lemon Tree as well!

DRJOSE there is a big ad in today's paper for MAMMA MIA! and they forgot to put your name on it!  There goes all those tickets!

Yes, I am enjoying my NOT springing forward.  Yes to rest of the nation we here in Indiana say POPPYCOCK.  Change your times if you will - spring forward so to speak.  We will stay exactly where we are and enjoy every minute of it - which you cannot because you LOST 60 minutes of today!

DR RODZINSKI wrote about it yesterday.  There is a move in the Indiana legislature to put us on DST - but you would think it was MAJOR piece of legislation.  Hours - nay DAYS - are spent in each session arguing about it.  Then some little political hack trying to get his name in the paper, tacks it on to the bottom of another bill that has already passed the house....and the argument is on again.  MANY MANY MANY useful bills have died in the Senate because DST was tacked onto it.

Ladies and gentlemen, Indiana has the WORST state legislature in the nation.  It is sad, but it is true.

I'm back from a lovely brunch with DR Rodzinski and the beautiful Antonia.  We had a nice meal at what used to be called Miss Elle's on 79th Street.  Rodzinski and I had the omelette filled with cheese, bacon and mushroom with a side order of sausage, and Antonia had pasta with sausage.  Also festive mimosas.  Then we went to Beard Papa's for cream puffs.

Come now, DR TCB, I thought everyone knew!  Ever since that nasty business with a certain Mr. Bruno Anthony, Mr. Haines has had a phobia about dining with others.  It started innocently enough, where he didn't like to dine on a train, but it grew to not wanting to dine with strangers, either on or off of trains, and now has progressed to the point where he cannot bear to eat with anyone else in the room.  A number of us have become quite concerned, but the only psychiatrist Mr. Haines trusts enough to help him is currently working full-time with a female kleptomaniac who has an intense fear of the color red, and his schedule simply doesn't allow adding to his case load.

I got the grass mowed, but it was a major pain. After months of not having to do it, one gets out of the habit of doing it. I have an electric mower due to the relatively small front yard I have, and keeping the cord out of the way of getting run over requires a certain pattern to be followed. Every year, it takes me a few times to get the apttern reestablished in my head.

It's the Phantoms unfinished manuscript so that's why it's so short.  But I really like it.  I only wanted to know what the words were to it because I had a whole different idea as to what they were.

Of course, I do tend to miss a word here and there from time to time and make up my own.

For years I thought the Miss America song said--"Look at her she's a DILL"  Instead of "Ideal".   ::)

I think it's wonderful that DR Danise is planning to grow a lemon tree.  My grandfather had four or five trees in his back yard, producing bagfulls of lemons every year (although to say that we had lemons coming out of our ears isn't quite accurate, and provokes a silly visual in my opinion).

Be prepared to buy lemons for a few years after planting your tree, Danise.  It takes a while for the tree to mature enough to give fruit.

Years ago Gen. Re:  church pews/news.  You beat me to the punch, Larry--the same joke occurred to me!!

Many years ago, pre-Caller ID, we used to make prank phone calls at a job I had.  Some of our favorites were made to 800 numbers.  I called a Pew Manufacturer (there are such things) in central Washington as I recall and identified myself as Father Weinstein of St. Judas in the Valley (I like giving them clues--unfortunately this guy had none).  Anyway, I think I called him on a Thursday and I told him vandals had broken into our church and stolen all our pews and could he have a set of 50 ready by Sunday for us?  :)

Another of my favorites, though a bit on the macabre side.  I found a bunch of mortuary listings in the 800 directory and called and pretended to be a salesman for Carbobalm, the "new carbonated embalming fluid."  I had my office mates in hysterics as I told these people we could give them free samples.  One of the mortuary people asked me, quite seriously, what good carbonated embalming fluid was?  Without missing a beat I said, "Oh, it gives the departed a nice, perky look.  You'll be amazed."

We also called Otis elevator and told them we had a really huge Ranch style house and could they put in an elevator that went sideways.  They said they couldn't do that, but they could put in a moving walkway or escalator.  "Oh, that won't do," I said.  "I have agoraphobia."

There is a link to my e-mail address on your site that has changed.  It's
located in the last post on Jean DuShon.  It's important that it's changed
because people have gotten in contact with me with work for Jean.  The link says
"Oliver Penn" with the address algy641@yahoo.com.  The new address is nneprevilo@yahoo.com

Yesterday was Hans Christian Andersen’s birthday and this year marks the two hundredth anniversary of his birth.  I loved Andersen's fairly tales and storys when I was child. My special favorites are The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Little Match Girl. I wonder what is/are your DRs favorite/favorites...

One of my favorite adaptations of his stories is Charles Strouse's quasi-opera Nightingale.  The recording features Sarah Brightman and I love it.  I also love the Disney version of "A Little Mermaid" but that's mainly because of the Howard Ashman/Alan Menken songs...not the "happy ending."

I wouldn't worry about that....Jean doesn't need the work.  It's a scam - kinda like what JMK was talking about, only internet age and not carbonated.

Thanks for sharing your Doris impressions, MR BK.

Someone stopped by to visit me.  They left a nice note.  Problem is, I was home when they stopped by.  They said they rang the doorbell.  My doorbell is REALLY loud, so I can't imagine why I didn't hear it, even if I was most likely in the den watching TV or something.  I did take some trash out briefly, so if that's when the doorbell rang, then I wouldn't have heard it.  Oh, well.

From the information on Jean DuShon page

"Jean was called back to New York to replace the ailing Ruth Brown three weeks before the Broadway opening of the musical, "Blues in the Night" co-starring Leslie Uggams. DuShon received rave reviews from the likes of Frank Rich of the New York Times who said "Miss DuShon is sassy, yet elegant" and from Clive Barnes who called her "indelibly randy" had great things to say about her performance. Others felt that she made history while singing Bessie Smith's "Wasted Life Blues". Audiences gave her standing ovations, the same way they had with Jennifer Holliday's "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going". It was an astonishing performance prompting The Princeton Town Topics to say, "Our nominee for star of the evening is Jean DuShon...she is not only a gifted singer but a gifted actress whose songs are not simply sung, but performed." The Spectrum reported, "The show-stopper is Jean DuShon...hers is a bravura performance which brings down the house".

"Blues in the Night" was so good, it was nominated as best musical of the year at the Tony Awards against "Cats". Strangely, the producers of the show did not push to get DuShon a best actress in a musical nomination which could have saved the show from closing after six months.
"

All the above is true!!! I saw Blues in the Night many times during the New York run. It played at the Rialto, a theatre that was torn down years later during the 42nd Street renovations. It was on Broadway between 42nd & 43rd Streets. The year was 1982 and I had just come back to New York from my time on the road with Sesame Street Live. I was living off my savings and going to the Equity office every day. They give out free theatre tickets (I've mentioned this in the past) to union members so I saw Blues many times. I thought it was wonderful. I agree with the person in the above paragraph, but the show did not get across the board great reviews. The performers were singled out, like Miss DuShon and Leslie Uggams and Debbie Shapiro before became Debbie Shapiro Gravitte.  She (DuShon) was riveting. Her performance of Wasted Life Blues was a heart stopping moment. What a piece of work. I also saw the show in London with Carol Wood. It was much better received in London than in New York and ran much longer, closer to two years. I saw it on the road with Miss Della Reese and I saw it when it came back to New York after the London run. It played at the Minetta Lane Theatre and had a short, ultimately unsuccessful run. I sound like a Blues groupie but all during that time I was friends with the director of the show, Sheldon Epps. He will be directing a new version of Purlie, the musical in San Diego (I belive) and they hope to bring it to New York sometime in the fall or winter.

During that summer of 1982 I also saw Torch Song Trilogy many times  (also for free) with the amazing Mr. Harvey Fierstein and his understudy, Jonathan Hadary. And I saw one of Mr. Nathan Lane's first Broadway performances with Mr. George C. Scott in Present Laughter (a Noel Coward play). It was done at Circle in the Square when that space was still a subscription theatre. I remember laughing until it hurt. Christine Lahti was also in that show. Ah, the memories of 1982.

Kerry, thanks for the mention of dear Mr. DangerMouse

Michael, what a great Web page for Larry! Good work, my friend. I will look at the page more closely tomorrow at work where I have high speed.

Now I want to post this before something happens since I've been writing it forever.

Ben - my memories of Christine Lahti go back even farther.  She and I were both members of the Class of '72 at The University of Michigan.  My friends and I used to go to one-acts every week at the Student Lab Theatre and she was in many, many of them.  I especially remember one called Muck, in which she just deadpanned while all sorts of substances were thrown at her.

http://www.soul-patrol.com/jazz/dushon.htm

The only thing wrong with the article on Jean DuShon is that it says,

Quote
Jean was invited to tour the world in 1991. She perfomed concerts in Mexico, China, India (where she sang gospel with 500 Indian voices behind her), Monaco (for Princess Grace), Canada, France and Australia.
.

That is very nice, except she must have performed for Princess Grace at the cemetery, since Grace died in 1982.

Bollywood...Hollywood...pttteuy! (I don't know how to spell that)...I have a new love...Hong Kong musicals! Just finished watching the 1960s film HONG KONG RHAPSODY...you would think you were watching an extravagent Ross Hunter produced Rodgers and Hammerstein wide screen Hollywood musical...except that everyone is speaking Chinese! LOL! It was very funny and the musical numbers were out of this world! Oddly enough it was directed by a Japanese director.

This was a VCD sent to me by my long time friend David who lives in Seattle...he gets them in Chinatown. I am now seriously considering getting me an all region DVD player so that I can purchase some of these movies on DVD (VCD just doesn't do the movies justice).

I must get this 1959 musical!!!

DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES was really a hoot tonight!

DRJane, Michael found a photo of the Utah Festival Opera production of GREENWILLOW as well as a shot of Eddie Bracken in the Houston Grand Opera BABES IN TOYLAND on the net.  I was nice to see them.  I may have to post a few shots of GREENWILLOW because it was so lovely.

My favorite Andersen story is "The Snow Queen," which has amazing biblical references and and always moves me to tears.  When I worked on the wonderful Adrian Mitchell version for the New York State Theatre Institute, I was boggled by all the references to the Easter holiday and the life of Christ in the story.

There's also a new 2005 Viking-Penguin translation of Andersen's tales that I just picked up.  It has a good short bio of Andersen (he once stayed with Dickens and his family in London so long that he wore out his welcome and the friendship), and the stories are quite well told.

With that, to bed.  Sweet dreams, everyone!

I see on the Amazon.fr site, under musique classique that the film soundtrrack  is available as well.

Doris Day made two variety specials once she started doing TV that I wish would one day be released on DVD. They were big hits in their day (I think Doris must have been one of the most beloved of all the stars of that period.), and I thinki baby boomers would get a kick out of seeing them again.

But, then again, Barbra Streisand has not had the foresight to released her 1960s TV specials on DVD yet either. I have the videotape releases, but they'd look much better on DVD if they were given the proper attention.

I read a review of SIN CITY that started it would clearly have gotten an NC-17 rating due to all the violence if it had been filmed in color.

When I read that, I knew I had no interest in seeing it despite that incredible cast. Mickey Rourke has walked away with all of the best reviews that I've read.

I never knew there was an actual soundtrack album available for HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN. All I ever had on LP was the studio set with Danny Kaye (and Jane Wyman joining him). I've always loved this movie. If it's the real soundtrack recording on CD, I'll start looking for it.

Good Evening!

...I'm a bit logey too right now... Between shows today, the volunteer staff for the Orpheum hosted a potluck dinner for the cast and crew and orchestra... And since we're in Memphis...

Deviled Eggs (at least five different types!  The ones with jalapenos were particularly tasty!), cole slaw, broccoli slaw, black bean dip, scalloped potatoes, mashed potatoes, home fries, Tater Tot Casserole(!!!!), Green Bean Casserole, just plain green beans, green beans with bits of ham, corn, corn pudding, Frito Pie(!!), broccoli-rice-cheese casserole, cornbread, mexican cornbread, broccoli(!) cornbread, three-cheese biscuits, a Reuben "bread pudding" (I recognized the dish from a recipe that appeared in Gourmet a few years ago), smothered pork chops, spiral-sliced honey ham, fried chicken...  -And the fried chicken was very good too!

And then the dessert table!!!  -Banana pudding (with the Nilla Wafers), pecan pie, lemon pound cake, and a big sheet cake with the Mamma Mia! logo on it - half of it was vanilla cake, half of it was chocolate.  All of it was good!

Plus your choice of sweet tea or the unsweetened stuff...

So...  Needless to say, it had to be one of the best - if not the best - meal any of us had had the whole week here.  And the volunteer staff was so welcoming and friendly too.  It was great to spend some time with them.

One of the special treats of the dinner were the handcrafted centerpieces.  On each table was a sort of "sculpture" made out of pieces of styrofoam, streamers and plastic flowers.  On each "pedestal" there was one or two plastic dolls, each of them individually dressed and accessorized!  The woman who made them was a total hoot!  She makes different centerpieces for each show/cast that comes to town.  Ours were meant to represent the bridesmaids that appear in the wedding scene.  So... I took a centerpiece!  And I took a few pictures too!  *I plan to drop my film off as soon as we get into Indy tomorrow, so I should have pics to post by Wednesday.  The centerpieces are truly works of "art".

;)

...and that's why I'm a bit logey...

...And even though most of us were a bit "weighted" down during the second show, we had a great show.  The crowds here in Memphis have been wonderful all week.

Next week in Indy, another keyboard player will be flown in to take over another book while the Conductor flies home for a few days to see his family.  He'll be back by Saturday.  And our main drummer will be on vacation next week too, but the "sub" was on Tour 1 for a while, so, DRs Ginny, JRand and Joey - you have nothing to worry about.  ;)

I ordered three more Hong Kong musicals - Les Belles, The Love Parade, and Hong Kong Nocturne (Hong Kong Rhapsody is the sequel to Nocturne).  These really do sound fascinating.  This might be a whole new discovery.

I think some people got some 'splainin' to do, don't you?

POPPYCOCK!

It's ten, and yet it feels like nine.  Damn them, damn them all to hell.

It's already nine???  It really only feels like eight.

I ordered the four Hong Kong musicals.  The next question is, how do you find out what other musical titles they have at hkflix without going through all thirty-six pages of Chinese comedies (where the musicals are kept).

At the top of the page is a pull down window that says "Genre"...you can locate "Musicals" there.

Oh, I forgot Hong Kong Nocturne, that one is my friend Dave's favorite...and I think he is sending me the VCD of it...but alas I will have to upgrade to the DVDs, which also have some nifty extras on some of the titles.

Be sure to let me know what you think of the movies when you watch them BK! Especially AIR HOSTESS!!

I just recorded 50 tunes on to my minidisk off of vinyl. I needed a new Springtime mix of material for subway listening. For those with vinyl, the minidisk is a great way to be able to make your vinyl portable. You can put about 320 minutes of music on each disk. Much more with the new Hi-MD machines.

Now it is 1am and I feel cheated because it feels only like midnight. But there's no telling the alarm clock this in the morning.

For those keeping track, the final tune I recorded was "Watch Your Footwork" from the HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE soundtrack.

Not to be confused with this film of the same name, of course!

It feels like 10:17 PM, and it IS 10:17 PM.  The advantages of being one of the few places that doesn't go on daylight savings time.

No problem, MBarnum! I might recommend watching them in 1 minute increments spread out over a 100 year period or so!

As for SIN CITY, the violence is outlandish. It is stylized in such an odd way that they could probably get away with more than a regular film. It's one of those movies where you're not pleased to see a lot of kids in the audience.

Flying to Indy from Memphis through Dallas?  Hmmmmmmmmm.......

Indianapolis has NO rush hour downtown to speak of.  The traffic congestion is unfortunately, DRJOSE, all in the northern part of town where your hotel is.  BUT - hopefully we will continue the lovely weather.  And since there is only one newspaper in town, you won't have to worry about which Indy rag to buy!

Thanks to everyone for the good job vibes.  Hopefully I will have news sometime this week about an interview and will certainly keep you posted.

HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSON/THE COURT JESTER - while I didn't "get it away from" MR BK....I am happy to say I was awarded one of the CD's as a sparkling prize quite some time ago.  AND Danny Kaye fans would do well to find it on EBAY or maybe Amazon.com shops if it is available.  It is indeed sparkling!

Thanks DR JANE.  I love that Doris Day photo, too.  ;D

So to celebrate a new page, instead of dancing....here is Miss Day at the 1989 Golden Globe Ceremony where she was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award.    :-*

All I have is Decca 8479, Danny Kaye sings from Hans, with side 2 being Tubby the Tuba and some other stuff. This would be the LP with Jane Wyman. The Hans material is actually gorgeously sung and arranged, thanks to the great Gordon Jenkins.

And now, though I am not sleepy, I must to sleep be going.

Well hopefully she did fire her stylist after she saw the photos.

Doris was never impressed with the costume designers at Warners and she was even more upset at the makeup department....she called them "embalmers."

The Lovely Wife and I watched THE INCREDIBLES tonight which was a very winning and fun film.

Last night we watched BEING JULIA and, despite likeing many of the performers, I was disappointed.  It just sort of laid there and was flat.  And the whole thing seemed much ado about nothing.  I thought being Julia was actually being rather shallow and silly.  Why she becomes involved with the drip she becomes involved with was beyond me.

And there did not really seem to be much of a love-letter to the theatre or the acting profession as I hoped it might be...certainly not a THOSE LIPS, THOSE EYES, or SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, or ALL ABOUT EVE or LES ENFANT DU PARADIS or even THE PRODUCERS...

All packed - just need to put my dopp kit in my carry-on after I take care of my morning ablutions in the morning.

Yeah!  Nice weather in Indy!  I was checking weather.com for the forecasts for Dallas and Indy... Looks like I won't need to wear a jacket tomorrow.  :)

...Now I just need to figure out if I will need to reset my watch once I get there.  Company Management posted a notice on the Call Board regarding the no-DST zone and how we would not need to worry about the time change; and the wording was somewhat convoluted.  Someone pencilled in "Is this a test for MENSA?" at the top.  ;)

-Ssshhh... it looked suspiciously like the conductor's handwriting... Ssshhh... ;)

I guess we'll find out what time it is when we land.

And, yes, through Dallas.  We'll be on American... So, if you want to set up the banners at the airport and/or hold up that piece of paper with my name on it... ;)
