Title: OUT ON A LIMB
Post by: bk on April 04, 2005, 11:59:43 PM
Well, you've read the notes, you know which limb I've gone out on, and now it is time for you to post until the cows and their various and sundried limbs come home.

As for the Topic of the Day, I don't know the characters that well...I've only seen one high school production and the movie once.  I'll give it some though and see what characters other people choose to cast. ::) But I will start with these two:

Cassie:  Dame Edna
Zach:  Lea Delaria

I know that A Chorus Line was based on the stories of actual performers, but when I was in high school (and the show was still playing on Broadway), a friend of mine told the story that some of these people auditioned for the final show and didn't get cast to play themselves!  Is this true??

Angel Jim is going before the Parole Board once again today in Attica Correctional Euphemism Facility.

So let's please hear them VIBES, hopefully (solecism) for the last time.

A friend brought me his copy of U-571 to test in my DVD player. After working well for a long time, he tried playing it over the weekend, and the DVD started hanging up in the player after about 40 minutes. I told him I'd test it for him at some point today.

And I don't mind since I haven't seen it in over a year, it'll be nice to experience it again. I really liked it the first time I saw it.

This has happened to me before. The first copy of L.A. CONFIDENTIAL I had played great the first two times through my machine, but then it started pixillating after it changed layers. And it would do this in all the DVD players around the house. Very strange.

For those of you who emailed me yesterday (and you know who you are) about helping me clean out my closets (i.e., free CDs :) ):   I won't be able to mail stuff until next week.  I need to buy new CDRs for the "bonus" CD I mentioned, plus I noticed the master for the bonus has a weird digital quirk that I need to resolve with my engineer on Saturday.  If anyone else wants these (see yesterday's notes for details), email me.  I still have a stack I am happy to get out of my house.  :)

P.S.  A couple people asked for more info on Suzi and John, who are on my CD(s).  I've joked for many years that I'm the least famous person on the project.  :)

Suzi Stern is one of the most accomplished singers in any genre of her generation.  She has tons of recording credits, but is probably best known in the jazz world for her work with Denny Zeitlin.  Suzi wrote the lyric for Denny's standard Quiet Now, which has been recorded by many a person.  Her voice is not to be believed--I have worked with scores (pun maybe intended) of incredible vocalists in my career, but Suzi has the next to impossible to find combination of flawless technique coupled with amazing heart and soul.

John Stowell is probably one of the two or three most respected jazz guitarists of the last 50 years or so.  I'm sure BK's close personal friend Grant Geissman either knows John or has heard of him.  John is frequently called his generation's Jim Hall (in fact, I believe Jim himself called him that, LOL).  John first became famous for his many duet albums with bassist David Friesen (Dyan Cannon's brother).  Dave and John won many-a Downbeat critics poll.  John later was part of the group that Paul Horn took to Russia--they were the first western jazz group to play behind the Iron Curtain, back in the days when it was still detente.  :)  John has, like Suzi, recorded with so many people it's hard to list them all:  Lionel Hampton, Claudio Roditi, Dom um Romao, on and on.  John is famous among guitar players for the unusual way he holds his guitar when he plays:  he holds it vertically, so that the neck is pointing more or less straight up.

Good Morning!

Now that's what I call a good sleep!  Whew!

I kept trying to figure our why I was just sooooo tired last night - regardless of the time-change - or non-time change here in Indianapolis.  Well, once I got up today about half and hour ago, I remembered that I had not really slept that much the night before since I was packing - and my mind was racing a bit too - so...  Sleep is good.

I'm having a "brunch" of my Maggiano's salad and bread.  Yummy!

DR Jennifer: DR Danise posted her recipe for roast beef, which I've made several times. DR Jose would tell you to put a meat thermometer in it to tell you when it is done. I add a couple of cubes of beef bullion to the mix and cook it on top of the stove. Here's Danise's recipe:
Beef Roast

1 small beef roast (any kind)
1 small can cream of mushroom soup
1 can Coke Cola
1 onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, sliced into slivers
1 can mushrooms (whole or sliced)
Salt & pepper to taste

Cut garlic into slivers and using a knife, put them in different parts of the beef roast.  Salt and pepper the beef roast to your taste.

Put roast into pan or roaster.

Slice onion and put over the roast.

Open the can of mushrooms and pour out the juice.  Put mushrooms over the roast.

In mixing bowl mix the can of mushroom soup and can of coke.  Pour mixture over the beef roast.

Bake/roast 350 degrees until done.

If using a larger roast, you can double everything.  Another trick I use is to peel 2 white potatoes and put them in the side of the roasting pan so they cook in the gravy.

I don?t list a type of beef roast because I?ve used this on all kinds and it always turns out GREAT!  The meat is always tender.

DR Jennifer - Depending on the cut of meat you'll be roasting, if you have the stove top space - and don't mind a little smoke in your kitchen - if you can brown/sear your roast before putting it in the oven that will help add some wonderful flavor to the finished product.

Didn't DR Danise post her recipe for a cola-basted pot roast once?

The Hidden Trio, that's right!

I just got notification that my shipment of Hong Kong musicals has arrived!  That is why we love ordering from hkflix.com.  I asked for three day shipping (nine bucks for all the discs I ordered), and they were shipped yesterday via Fed Ex and arrived this morning.  I'll be picking them up later.  Even though I placed two separate orders, I'm pretty certain they shipped all the discs at once.  There should be six DVDs waiting for me (the seventh, Mambo Girl, was out of stock and will be shipped when it arrives in one or two weeks).  What fun.  I should also have at least two amazon packages from the UK which really should have been here yesterday (they shipped three items on the same day, only one of which arrived yesterday).  Digits crossed on those arrivals, because they're cherce.

From the IMBD:
Quote
Was asked to reprise her role of Mrs. Pamela Voorhees in Freddy vs. Jason, but turned it down due to the low offered salary.

Stated that if it wasn't for the fact that she was in desperate need of a new car, that she never would have played the role of Pamela Voorhies in "Friday the 13th." In fact after she read the script she called the film, "A piece of sh*t! *"

Salary
Friday the 13th (1980) $10,000

How exactly does one sear a roast? I would try that.  Although I have to be very careful with smoke because my smoke alarm rings very easily.  And then the alarm company calls very angry.

Also, I still don't have a meat thermometer.  So is 1 hour okay for a 2 lb roast? And how do i tell if it's ready without slicing into it?

Sorry to hear of the passing of Igor Edelman a couple of weeks ago.  Igor was one of the leading movie poster conservationists (he really invented the field), and he was a wonderful guy.  He did all my linenbacking and conservation work, and anyone who cared about their posters used him.  I was happy to know him a bit outside of his work, as I knew his daughter.  Apparently, he went peacefully with his wife and daughter at his side.  Can't ask for better than that.  I'm happy to own an "original" Edelman painting.  Back in the early nineties, I commissioned him to recreate the one-sheet for Morocco.  There was no way I would ever be affording an original poster on that film (heaven knows what it would have fetched then, not to mention now, but it would be somewhere in the fifty K range).  So, Igor did an original painting of the poster and it was incredible.  I shall take a photograph of it later and post it for all to see.

What is the story with that DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES photo shoot?  I believe Teri Hatcher is supposed to tell her side of the story on Access Hollywood tonight. But I am very curious.

They were saying that the women are asking for $1M per show. And that ABC was making demands on the photo shoot saying that Teri Hatcher could not be in the center of the photo and could not choose her bathing suit first.  What is that about?

As A Chorus Line casting.... the mind just boggles...

Zach - Don Knotts
Larry - Andy Griffith (but, of course.  And then during the run, Don and Andy could switch off roles.)
Cassie - Kirstie Alley
Connie - Bjork (with the swan dress)
Richie - Michael Jackson
Sheila - Susan Lucci
Diana - Rosie Perez (although she could possibly pull this one off)
Bebe - Courtney Love
Val - Kathie Lee Gifford (I wonder if she'd demand to change the four-letter words?)
Maggie - Melanie Griffiths
Don - Kevin Costner
Greg - Gilbert Gottfried
Mark - Jm. J Bullock
Bobby - Steven Wright
Al - Patrick Duffy
Kristine - Victoria Principal
Mike - Tony Danza (Have to have someone in the cast who might actually be good - just to make the rest of the cast look even more pitiable.)

And for more "serious" news about A Chorus Line, be sure to check out

http://www.achorusline.org

The site was put together by Baayork Lee, the original Connie.  Very informal, but very informative.  A nice place for the whole A Chorus Line family - which I am now a part of - to check in from time to time.

And I believe there is a history of the show, that explains some of the taping sessions and what eventually ended up in the show.

The stories in the show are all based on the real interviews with real people.  Some people got to speak their own lines, some people got to speak other people's.  And some "stories" were cobbled together from various people.  A little from here, a little from there.  And, I have to say, the best times in the rehearsal room - and outside of the rehearsal room - were when Baayork and  other alumni would just start telling their stories...  Before, during and after the Broadway run.  The good, the bad and the ugly.  But mainly the good.

I'm in the midst of watching Closer, so you'll have my thoughts in tomorrow's notes.  As I was watching one particular scene, I thought, "That seems very familiar to me."  Then I realized I'd seen the play at the Taper, with Rebecca de Mornay and Maggie Gyllanthal.  I think that was prior to my doing the notes, however.  I remember not liking the play all that much, and that is proving to be the case with the film.

From http://www.ochef.com/343.htm

Quote
Various cuts of meat take different amounts of time to cook. In an ideal world, everyone would have a thermometer — either an instant-read thermometer or a meat thermometer that stays in the roast the whole time it’s cooking. Then you would know that the roast is done when the temperature in the center of the roast reaches 120°F to 125°F, (49°C to 52°C) for rare, 130°F to 140°F (55°C to 60°C) for medium rare, 145°F to 150°F (63°C to 66°C) for medium, and 155°F to 165°F (68°C to 74°C) for well done (Note: 120° is a pretty rare roast).

Without a meat thermometer, you’re taking a bit of a gamble. The size and shape of the meat, the amount of fat and bone, how the meat was aged and other factors affect how long it should cook. In fact, more and more cookbook authors have given up the practice of putting a roasting chart in their books..

Cooking at a constant oven temperature of 300°F (160°C), a 5- to 8-lb standing rib roast will take 17-19 minutes per pound for rare, 20-22 for medium rare, 23-25 minutes for medium, and 27-30 minutes for well done. A sirloin roast of 8- to 12-lbs will take 16-20 minutes for rare, 20-22 for medium rare, 23-25 for medium, and 26-30 for well done. A boneless top round, by contrast, will take 28-30 minutes for rare, 30-33 for medium rare, 34-38 for medium, and 40-45 for well done.

If you roast at 325°F (160°C), subtract 2 minutes or so per pound. If the roast is refrigerated just before going into the oven, add 2 or 3 minutes per pound. We won’t even attempt to suggest times for the initial-hot-oven cooking method.

After the roast comes out of the oven, let it rest for 15 to 20 minutes, which allows the juices to become more evenly distributed within the meat and makes it easier to carve. The temperature of the roast will rise 5° to 10° after you take it from the oven, so if you are using a thermometer, you should take it out a bit before it reaches the desired temperature.

You thought this was going to be a simple answer, didn’t you?

DR Jennifer - If the place you bought the roast has an actual butcher in house, I'd just call and ask.  A lot of times if I'm buying a new cut of meat to try, I will go ahead and ask the man or woman behind the counter for cooking tips.

DR Jennifer - Finally... If you're going more for a "pot roast" type deal - a lot of gravy/sauce/drippings and vegetables - then a little bit of over-cooking won't really hurt since you'll have the gravy/sauce/drippings to moisten things back up.  However, if you're going more for the London Broil type roast, well...  Go to the store, and spend the $10 on a thermometer.

And if you have a cooking shop in the area - like Williams-Sonoma, etc. - give them call.

Myself, I do use a thermometer, but I've also become good at using the "touch and press" test with certain cuts of meat to determine how well-done it is.  The more you cook, the more you know.

:)

Oh, and as for searing...  In a heavy(!!) skillet, heat about two tablespoons (or less if your roast has a good coating of fat on it) of oil until near smoking.  Place the roast in the pan, and leave it there for at least two minute a side - usually more.  When it is time to be turned, the roast should "release" itself - you do not want to end up tearing the roast.  A nice brown color and crust is what you want.  And, yes, it does get quite smoky, so if you have alarm issues, you can just skip it.  Or also do it in the oven if you have a heavy roasting pan.  But if you can sear on the stovetop, and your pan is oven safe, then you can just go ahead and place the roast and the pan in the oven after searing.

Or will be you be braising?  -Which is really how a "pot roast" is "roasted" due to the addition of liquid.

Hope this didn't confuse you.  It almost confused me.

Stream of consciousness cooking lessons with Jose!

;)

Well, I guess I should get out of this hotel room soon then..

Actually, I'll be heading in early before the sound check, so that should give me about an hour to walk around and explore for a bit.

-Oh, and very cool about how the streets are arranged, at least the numbered ones.  I found out last night that since I'm at 86th Street, I'm basically 8.6 miles from downtown, and that Meridian is the east/west divide.

Btw, has anyone tried cooking a roast with cola to baste it?
I haven't.

I've heard of using cola, or other soft drinks (such as Dr. Pepper) to baste hams or birds.  It would probably work for a pork roast.  I have my doubts about using the stuff to baste beef, but beef usually doesn't get basted.  For a venison roast, I'd try something less "concocted," more earthy, such as sarsaparilla.

I'm not sure how any of those soda bastes would work when trying to make a gravy.  And you have to have a gravy, to sop up with fresh baked bread!

Title: Re:OUT ON A LIMB
Post by: S. Woody White on April 05, 2005, 11:53:38 AM

Put the pan you're going to use for roasting the roast over a burner on the range.  Turn on the fan over the range.  Turn on the burner, to medium high.  Put the roast in the pan and just let it cook for a minute or two, until it starts to get a nice sear on the bottom side.  Turn the roast over, repeat.  Turn the roast on one side, repeat.  Turn the roast over, repeat.  If you can, get the other two sides seared, too.

Thermometers aren't that expensive, and are a handy gadget to have around.  I like my probe theremometer, which has a digital readout that stays outside the oven while the probe stays in the roast.  But instant-read thermometers are worth having in the kitchen as well.

The idea behind roasting is low heat and slow.  This gives the meat, which is usually a tougher cut, time to relax and tenderize.  DO NOT try to rush things, or all you will get will be a hockey puck for dinner, and I'm not talking about your dinner guests.  Plan on at least two hours cooking time, preferably three.  And make sure you have plenty of liquid in the roasting pan; this is a braising technique, where the liquid helps keep the meat moist.

DR Jennifer, I brown the meat in a big pot on all sides, then add the ingredients in DR Danise's recipe (plus a couple of bullion cubes and maybe a little red wine), turn on low and let it cook for several hours.  It slow cooks in the liquid and is very tender. I am a very bad cook (shut up, DR Sandra!) but this turns out tasty and tender.

The pork fat will help baste the meat, but the cooking time won't change.

Leaving the roast out to come to room temperature sure helps if it was frozen before!  No, more seriously, it will cut down on the time for the internal temp to rise, which will help break down the connective tissues.  It's this break down that makes the meat tender, but it doesn't happen quickly, so just relax and plan on a late dinner.

The real problem with leaving the meat out is making sure no canines in the house can get to it.   :-\

I read about that "scandalous" VANITY FAIR cover shoot, and I have some problems with the information. The women are all different sizes, so why would it matter who got in the dressing room first? They're not going to have the same clothes, no way.

As for this salary business, ABC paid all five leading actresses plus James Denton a quarter of a million dollars each salary bonuses for their work this year. I seriously doubt they will meet any $1 million salary demands for any of them, if in fact it's true they asked for that. They had to have signed contracts at the start of the series for a certain number of years at a guaranteed salary. Usually, a network will make reasonable increases if a show's popularity continues past the first couple of years, but there is NO way any of those actors is going to be given $1 million an episode this early in the game, if at all.

All Hong Kong discs arrived except Mambo Girl which is in backorder.  One of the two UK packages arrived.  I don't know why three packages all sent from the same place on the same day wouldn't all arrive on the same day (yesterday).  One got here yesterday, one today, but the one that hasn't arrived is the expensive item and that is both worrisome and bothersome, not necessarily in that order.  On top of that, there was a slip saying I had a package, and they couldn't find it (then tried to say that slip might have been from yesterday).  It wasn't.  So, I've told them to keep looking and call me if they find anything or if it arrives later today.

Had a not very satisfying lunch at Bojangles. Don't know if this is a national chain, but it's akin to Popeye's.
Bojangles (http://www.bojangles.com/bojangles/home/day.html) is "somewhat" national, mostly along the Eastern Seaboard (but not in Delaware, which is strange considering how much Delaware is into chicken production).

A tanker truck has pulled up, delivering propane.  Mikey and Peggy gave them fair warning that the house is well protected, but the delivery continues.  Bonnie is watching the deliverymen very carefully, making sure they don't misbehave.

Good doggies!

DR MattH, yes the DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES story seems a bit off.  Also allegedly Teri Hatcher walked off the shoot crying. It will be interesting to hear her story tonight (I will try to remember to watch Access Hollywood).

I think they were saying that Teri's suit was bright red and that was the most desirable suit (it would catch the reader's eye).

I'm sure some of the women are the same size. But perhaps they had the same suits in different sizes (so they could choose).

DR Sandra, you must post the recipe for "big bowl of stuff," you culinary goddess you!

It's really very simple. Its genius is in its simplicity.

Here it is...

Big Bowl of Stuff

1. Find the biggest bowl in your kitchen.

2. Fill it with whatever you have in the fridge. (This is the "stuff.")

3. Eat it.

This recipe is pretty flexible. It gives you a lot of opportunities to customize it.

Good Afternoon!

Back from sound check...

What a neat hall. What a neat campus.  -And I found out the on-campus Starbucks is actually open until midnight, Monday-Thursday and Sunday nights.  -It took me a second to realize the logic behind that schedule.  I had also forgotten that Butler has a small observatory - I think I remember writing to them when I was going through my "star" phase in grade school.

After sound check, I made a Target run, and now I should all that I need for the rest of the week here.

Btw, DRs Ginny, JRand and Joey - I got the ticket confirmations today.  :)  Yippee!!  *Someone better have a digital camera with them!

Re a mention earlier from DR JRand of Bobby Rydell. As these things happen, I was listening to the radio yesterday and there was Bobby Rydell singing "Volare:. I had mentioned to partner Colin that I remember thinking way back then how it was so "rocked up". I had been used to the Domenico Modugno and Dean Martin versions. Now it could well be Michael Bublé. Maybe a follow up to his version of "Sway". I always liked the Rydell recordings - a terrific big band sound at times.

MR BK was talking about him in TEACHER'S PET this week with Doris Day and Clark Gable.

Mr Gig Young is so terrific.  And as good as Tony Randall is in PILLOW TALK, Mr Gig Young would have made it a contest.  Opposite Doris and Cary Grant in THAT TOUCH OF MINK, Mr Gig Young is terrific.

His AA performance in THEY SHOOT HORSES, DON'T THEY? is one of those that really made me happy.

And as DRJMK has written - Mr Gig Young's second wife was Sophie Rosenstein who got her studio acting coach job through Frances Farmer who had been her student at the University of Washington.

As I recall from one of our conversations, BK knows two Jeff Kauf(f)mans aside from me.  One of them, IIRC, was the Principal or Vice Principal of the high school where the girl was murdered.  Am I remembering that correctly?  We discussed so very much that day at Jerry's, it's hard to remember it all.  ;)

It was SHOW TUNE night on AMERICAN IDOL tonight, though how they EVER got that past Simon Cowell I'll never know. The man was miserable for the entire hour though he claimed he liked show music. But he didn't like any of the song choices.

Truth to tell, most of these pop singers can't handle classic Broadway like "The Impossible Dream" or "As Long As He Needs Me."

I thought Constantine did the best job with "My Funny Valentine," though I wasn't crazy about the arrangement at all. Bo chose the best possible song for his voice - "Corner of the Sky." (I'm assuming the songs from HAIR or RENT weren't available.)

The judges made a special point to rave about Vonzell ("People") and Nadia ("As Long as He Needs Me") though neither came close to doing the song justice.  They also liked Nikko who butchered "One Hand, One Heart" and let the female backup singer outsing him pathetically).
Title: Re:OUT ON A LIMB
Post by: Matt H. on April 05, 2005, 08:20:04 PM
From the busy signals, it's clear a man will go home this week. Nadia's was the least busy of the three remaining females (Carrie's was the busiest of the night of all the contestants; she sang a bland version of "Hello, Young Lovers"). Still, it was busier than several of the men.

I think Scott will go home, a combination of a lackluster cover of  "The Impossible Dream" and the bad publicity he's had this past week. Anthony's phone line was never busy either (se sang a pop rendition of "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" which I kind of liked but no one else seemed to, so it's going to be one of those two. Anwar's line seemed to be busier than Nikko's, but it was a close call.

So, I'll say bottomt three: Scott, Anthony, and Anwar (since he was next to the bottom last week).

My friend's copy of U-571 played just fine on my DVD player. I cleaned the DVD before I played it. Maybe there was a grease spot on it or something.

That movie has one of the best sound designs of any DVD I've ever listened to. Only LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING seems to be its match.

MBarnum, do you know of a movie called Bollywood and Vine?  The director posted to the Musicalmakers group saying he's looking for a composer to develop a musical version of it.

I had never heard of it JMK. I looked it up on IMDB and it appears to be an American film from 2004...must be straight to video or something.

DR CP - what does a Television Maven like MR HARLAN ELLISON think of the Reality TV phase of "entertainment"?

I am curious as to his thoughts on TAR, but especially such fare as THE BACHELOR and especially THE STARLET!

As if to reinforce your views, MattH, Michael Clarke Duncan gives, in my opinion, easily the worst performance in SIN CITY. But his character is pretty ridiculous.

I started a new job today- which may or may not be permanent.  I'm not even sure whether or not I want it to be permanent.  Like all first days of work, I feel like my head is going to explode.

Ay Yi Yi Yi Yi Oy!

Like many people, whenever I think of bad casting of "A Chorus Line," I just think of the movie.  Even Carol Channing and Mickey Rooney would have improved the movie.

Good luck with the new job DR Kerry...hang in there, you know it always takes a week or two to get over the stressed feeling of a new job.

Good Evening!

I am awaiting DRJOSE's opening night report!

Good first night in Indy.  Great audience!  And it was also the first night for the new Sophie understudy - she did a great job.

It also seems to be "bring your partner to work" week at Mamma Mia!.  With Indy being relatively close to Chicago - and a lot of the cast and crew are from Chicago - a lot of husbands, wives and significant others were waiting at the stage door tonight after the show.  And since the next stop is South Bend, most of them will be traveling with the show.  And a few more mid-West stops...  The more the merrier!

The pit here is a bit higher, so I'm able to see more of the show this time.  It was fun watching these "new" people do their thing on stage.  And it was just plain fun watching some of the people on stage.  Sam J. Who? ;D

The only "bad" thing tonight was that the A/C in the hall had not been turned on early enough today.  It was quite warm when we were in sound check this afternoon, and it felt fine once we started the show... But as the show progressed...  Lots of programs waving in the audience.  Ah, well...  I'll be sure to make sure that the hall is at the proper temperature for Sunday's matinee.  ;)

-Oh!  I also didn't realize that this is one of those halls with the one long row - no middle aisle to come down.  That's not a bad thing, but I always have to wonder about people getting "trapped" in the center of the row.  Wolf Trap in Virginia is like that too, and those are some looooong rows.  And each time I go there, I always question that design.  Yes, I know it adds more seats - and ticket revenue - but I always have to wonder about the safety of that design in the event of a fire or something like that.  Especially since the Filene Center burnt down, and was rebuilt.  Thankfully, the fire took place out of season.  (I believe.)

A childhood friend of mine from Indiana has passed away. He was a big hoss of a guy, but apparently he was moving into a new apartment and spent one night there and got carbon monoxide poisoning.

I haven't seen the fellow since junior high days, but what will always stick with me, and would have regardless, is that in 4th grade he gave me a Rubik's Cube for Christmas at school. I had already gotten one, and thoughtlessly traded his gift away to another kid for a ceramic snowman. When I say "thoughtlessly" I mean, it never even occurred to me what a rude thing this was on my part. It was just a matter of trading, as kids do. I got home that night to find his mother had called my mom and he had gone home quite upset, naturally. I had to call and apologize. It was a real "life lesson" for me. I'm sure it was not on his list of top agonies in life or anything, but even so, it has been with me all these years, and I regret it like it was yesterday.

Anyways, those who haven't done so since we last discussed it, make sure you have a carbon monoxide detector around the house.

Maybe 18 servings for MIDGETS!!!!

I hate to see those diet cookie commercials where the model takes two or three little bites to eat one of those suckers, and you could put three in your mouth without any problem at all!

Oh dear!  Oh me!  When I got home from work tonight, I sprawled out on the bed to watch the Mariners play.  After the first inning, we were ahead 4 to 0 against Minnesota.  At that point I promptly fell asleep, and when I woke up, not only were the Mariners down 7 to 4, but I had slept through all but the last five minutes of American Idol.  I only managed to catch the final thirty or forty second review of the nine finalists with their phone numbers.  Strange, how little you can grasp from a less than ten second sound bite.

Carrie sounded fine
Constantine looked fine
I enjoyed Anthony
I couldn't tell what the Hell Bo was even singing
As for the rest.........

Scott looked like he had been squeezed into Orson Welles old suit.
Nadia appeared to be wearing a dress made out of toilet paper.
The others failed to even register.

Sorry about your friend Rodzinski.  Strange how those horrible little life lessons stick with us, even though they are probably quickly forgotten by the other person involved.

MattH -- Paula was not as sloppy squishy mushy on the Tongiht Show as she has been the last few weeks on Idol.  However, she was acting rather strange, and she seemed to be having a hard time getting her mouth around her words.  It was either like watching a bad ventriliquist or watching Rosalind Russell not lip-synching in GYPSY.  It was very strange to watch.

Jose -- Glad the show is going well.  For a chance to meet you, it would almost be worth it to sit through MAMMA MIA.

LOL....neither MR BK nor MR HARLAN ELLISON is missing much.

TAR = The Amazing Race, DR CP!  HE's television criticism has always been so spot on - curiosity got the better of me.  I can understand why the subject has never come up.  LOL

I watch very little television at all.  First off, the frequent interruptions of rampant commercials make watching almost anything unbearable anymore.  If you watch three hours of TV a night, you've spent at least a third of that time, watching commercials.  What a waste!  Secondly, I just can't see watching 3-4-6 hours of TV a day every day.  Another waste.  Particularly mediocre reality programming, which is rarely real.  We are passively amusing ourselves to death.

P.S. - I know know what The American Race is either.
